solskjaer this morning following yesterday's 4—1 defeat at watford. the club have suffered a string of poor results , and are currently 7th in the premier league table. we'll be live from old trafford in a moment but firstjoe lynskey looks back on solskjaer*s time at manchester united. for manchester united, he was the coach with the connection. the playing icon who became manager. no one hoped the end would be like this. in ole gunnar solskjaer*s last match, his team were beaten 4—1 by watford, the end of a run of seven league games with one win and now three humiliations. last month, united lost 5—0 at home to liverpool and, on the same ground, were beaten by manchester city. defeat to bitter rivals have caused the most damage. the boys, of course, they're disappointed. they've let themselves down and the fans down. it's hard to stand here and explain that but that's football and we have to take the flak for it. solskjaerjoined united 25 years ago. he was the striker whose late goals meant so much. super sub has done it again! in 2018, he became temporary manager and their form was so good, he was the standout choice. but, as permanent boss, there have been no trophies. this was meant to be the year it came good. cristiano ronaldo scored twice on his debut, but even his goals haven't stopped this dismal run. now even the players don't hold back. it was embarrassing. we don't know what to do with the ball, we don't know how to defend properly, we are conceding a lot of goals. yeah, it's another nightmare. since 2013, everything's changed. united now seek a fifth permanent boss since sir alex ferguson left. as a player under him, solskjaer won six league titles. but, as a coach, too much has gone wrong and, this time for solskjaer, there is no late turnaround. joe lynskey, bbc news. let's speak to jane dougal who is outside old trafford. it isa it is a brutal game and they decided he's got to go. where did he go wrong? he's got to go. where did he go wron: ? ~ ., , he's got to go. where did he go wron~?~ . , ,, he's got to go. where did he go wron: ? ~ . , ,, ., ~ ., wrong? well, i have been speaking to fans outside — wrong? well, i have been speaking the same way, that ollie gone a sauce jar is and always will be a club legend as a player but as a manager, as a coach, perhaps, his skill seems to be lacking —— that ole gunnar solskjaer. don't forget last year manchester united did finish second in the league under ole gunnar solskjaer but the last few months that we all seem to have come off and yes, yes and a's 4—1 loss against watford just seem to be the final straw for fans who had obviously been losing patience with him and they booed him after that for one defeat and that defeat we understand prompted the owners of the club the blazers to call an urgent meeting last night where the decision was taken that ole gunnar solskjaer did not have a future at manchester united as a coach. they released a statement is confirming that the club and the management had parted company and they said in that statement ollie will always been a legend manchester united and it is with great regret that we have reached this difficult decision. while the last few weeks have been disappointing they should not obscure all that he is done over the last few years, which i did lead to a little earlier. the statement also mention when the members of the backroom staff michael carrick will take charge for the forthcoming games while the club look to appoint a interim manager until the end of this season and then presumably they will be looking for a permanent manager in the summer. there have been a few names in the frame for that position, nothing confirmed as yet but one that is repeated again and again as the former real madrid manager who has worked with cristiano ronaldo in the past so perhaps that means he will build to find a place for ronaldo in his system because he didn't seem to be fitting into the one that solskjaer had at manchester united. while this was a very difficult decision to make because of course solskjaer is so full of it at this club. of course, he scored a winning goal at the champions league final for united which cause them to go on to win the treble that year as a manager he just win the treble that year as a manager hejust didn't win the treble that year as a manager he just didn't manage to make it didn't win any silverware for manchester united during his three—year tenure and of course that is an acceptable a club of this stature and as we know in the premier league tottenham hotspur. i thought he would go in there, shake up the place and united would be a proper proposition again as a football team but sadly that ship sailed as he is at spurs and as i understand hasn't been seen in public since she made accusations of sexual assault against a senior chinese politician. the women's tennis association say the videos do not address its concerns about her well being and the foreign office says beijing needs to provide "verifiable" evidence that she's safe. our china correspondentjohn sudworth has this report. this appears to be the first solid evidence of peng shuai's whereabouts since she made her allegation. released by chinese state media operatives, you can hear her name being announced. tannoy announcement and then a smile and a wave — seemingly meant to send a message all is well. but there are few allegations more sensitive in china than one of sexual assault levelled against a man as senior as former vice premier zhang gaoli. and previous material released by state media meant to show that peng shuai is not being held under duress has only fuelled further speculation. i don't think this thing is going to end anytime soon, which is why i think, in the next few days, we can expect more of these quite bizarre and suspicious proofs of life from chinese state media, because they are starting to realise that this is getting out of control. the trouble for china is that, for the first time, it's a global sporting icon who's at the centre of concern about its human rights abuses. and just a few weeks before it is due to host the winter olympics. the government had failed to fulfil any of the human rights promises it had made in order to get the games and we can see the situation in the country has deteriorated significantly. one wonders now whether the players even feel safe to go and compete there. the trouble for china is that these allegations are of such a sensitive nature that it finds itself in a bit of a bind. the more it tries to prove that all is normal with a peng shuai, the more questions there are, and the greater the gap is exposed between the propaganda value of an olympics that's meant to be all about openness and a political system that's all about control. olympics officials insist politics should be kept out of sport. peng shuai has put them front and centre of court. john sudworth, bbc news, taipei. labour has accused the government of "comprehensively failing" to deal with people using small boats to cross the channel to the uk. nearly 25,000 people have arrived so far this year, almost three times the total number of migrants in 2020. yesterday the prime minister announced a cabinet office review into ways of stemming the flow of migrants making the crossing. the shadow home secretary nick thomas—symonds has accused the government of "dangerous" incompetence. there are thousands of lives being risked in the english channel on a day to day basis, i'm afraid, and the home secretary's incompetence on this matter is dangerous. what would i be doing as home secretary? well, i would be firstly getting an effective deal with the french authorities. the issue with pretty battal is that she's more interested in a diplomatic spat than she is in a workable deal. and the deal is we have it focuses on the coast. it focuses on patrols. now, i'm not saying that isn't important — it is. but we also need in that deal to be looking upstream. we need to be looking away from the coast to disrupt these vile people—smugglers on the long routes, the long, well—established routes the people have taken to reach northern france in the first place. well, mr thomas simmons also said he would like a replacement for the dublin agreement which allows eu countries to transfer asylum seekers back to the first member state can do meant that they can be proven to have entered. the uk left the agreement after brexit. the health secretary sajid javid said the home office is working to find ways to return people to other countries. whatever agreement it wasn't going to be, the agreement was, as i say, it never worked. we do need new agreements with countries, predominantly with the countries where most of the failed asylum seekers are coming from. and those aren't always european countries. and home secretary has done that. she has signed new agreements and put those in place with countries like india. but also, i would say that the pandemic has made returning people across the world, across asylum systems much harder. and we do have to take that into account as well. the welsh labour government and plaid cymru have approved what they describe as a "wide—ranging deal" for cooperation in the senedd. the agreement includes pledges to extend free school meals to all primary school pupils, to expand free childcare, to reform social care and measures to tackle second homes. the agreement still needs the approval of plaid members. very chilly
