north of the weather front but colder air getting into the far north—west of scotland and then nothing moves anywhere in a hurry so the front is snaking across england and wales on wednesday, further south on wednesday the grey skies and damp kissed weather, england, east anglia. to the north some bright and sunny spells, a few showers and it's looking mild to the middle of the week at temperatures in the mid teens. it's the end of the week where things could start to kick off. there is quite a lot of uncertainty in this poor cat but it looks like as we look to friday we could see the remnants of a storm we had been watching in the atlantic heading our way so friday it could bring something wet and windy but we will up to date. that's all from the bbc news at six, so it's goodbye from me , and on bbc one we nowjoin the bbc*s news teams where you are. hello, i'm olly foster. here's what's coming up on sportsday. the new yorkshire chairman says sorry to azeem rafiq and thanks him for his bravery in speaking out about the racism he faced. racism or any form of discrimination is not banter. it's simply not acceptable. howe—ay the lads — can eddie steady the ship at newcastle? he's the new head coach. there are four races to go, but have mercedes thrown in the towel in the formula one championship? also coming up in the programme... we'll hear from the williams sisters ahead of a new film that chroincles their incredible rise to the top of the tennis world. good evening. lord kamlesh patel says that there is a clear need for urgent and seismic change at yorkshire cricket. the county has been accused of institutional racism after former player azeem rafiq spoke out about his experiences. following a raft of board resignations, the incoming chairman, lord patel, has thanked rafiq for his bravery in coming forward and says he has a role to play as they look to re—establish trust at the club. our sports correspondent, katie gornall, was at headingley today. katie, lord patel, very clear about what steps need to be taken. it isa it is a huge challenge that lord patel has to steer yorkshire cricket club through this crisis of their own making. it hasn'tjust engulfed the club, but also the wider sport of cricket. speaking to a news conference here at headingley, he promise to change and apologised to azeem rafiq for the botched handling of his allegations of racism and bullying of his time here. the club have been criticised since they published their report in september. they revealed no one would be punished as a result of their investigation. also, describing a racist slur that azeem rafiq was regularly subjected to as friendly, good—natured banter. lord patel dismissed this suggestion when he was speaking to us here today and shared his own story of the vile racism that he experienced growing up racism that he experienced growing up in bradford. it was part of an emotional and personal statement that he let out before taking questions here. this has been a painful and difficult _ this has been a painful and difficult period for yorkshire cricket _ difficult period for yorkshire cricket club and all those patel revealed they spoke for more than six hours before this took place, but azeem rafiq has released a statement this evening. he thanked lord patel, saying "i brought a legal claim because the club refused to acknowledge the problem. for the first time i can remember, i hope this might happen, but i will be watching to ensure that it does." as part of that statement, he calls for a complete leadership change at the club. that's something that lord patel was asked about and he declined to be drawn on the futures of senior figures who are currently running the club. people like martin, the director of cricket, and the ceo. he didn't say whether they will remain in their post in the long term. all he said was he would take time to speak to everybody, but with sponsors having deserted the club and their drones last week and the current band, he knows he needs to act fast if he needs to rebuild trust. ., ., ., , ., trust. katie gornall, many thanks indeed. eddie howe is the new newcastle united head coach, replacing steve bruce, who was sacked almost three weeks ago. he's signed a contract through to the summer of 202a. he's not been in management since he was relegated with bournemouth in august last year. he has a similar task to try and save newcastle. they are 19th in the table, five points from safety after 11 games. here's bbc newcastle's andrew hartley. today, the former manager travelled to tyneside to sign a contract which will keep him at st. james as part until the summer of 202a. the 43—year—old was at brighton on saturday to watch his new side draw 1-1 they will have a toughjob will come in due course. they will have a tough job on their hands because newcastle are currently marooned in the bottom three of the premier league without a win all season. the club is hoping howe can work his magic that saw him take the club from the brink of relegation from league 2, all the way up to the premier league, where they remained forfive premier league, where they remained for five seasons premier league, where they remained forfive seasons under premier league, where they remained for five seasons under his leadership before relegation in the former arsenal boss had turned down the chance to manage at newcastle after holding talks with the club. newcastle are currently in the bottom three with norwich city, with just five points on the board, and eddie howe's first game will be a week on saturday we newcastle entertain brantford. this is andrew hartley for bbc news. so, eddie howe comes in for steve bruce there, and there are a few more premier league appointments in the offing. aston villa and norwich have vacancies. after a rather brutal weekend. olly, if you wantjob security, football management probably isn't for you. aston villa's dean smith and norwich's daniel farke both departed over the weekend. that takes us up to five now for the season, and we're barely past bonfire night. for context, one premier league season has seen this many sackings by this stage. 2004 - 2005 has all 2004 — 2005 has all this. five straight defeats ultimately did it for smith. he put out a statement today saying, "i felt that with important players soon returning to full fitness we would achieve a top half finish." many in the game believe it's a harsh decision. gary lineker thought it was harsh given he'd taken the club up factor. the likes of antonio conte at spurs and now eddie howe at newcastle have time to get settled, but villa and norwich boards also won't now be rushed — and the glare falls off a little bit. here's our chief football writer, phil mcnulty. it gives them time with a couple of weeks _ it gives them time with a couple of weeks to— it gives them time with a couple of weeks to maybe put some norwich's case of being relegated. and on that relegation theme, if we take a look at the bottom six right now, two clubs are looking for new managers, two have already made the change. but whilst this season is exception with a quarter of premier league managers on their way, traditionally, it's far more cuthroat on the continent. we've crunched the numbers for the last five non—pandemic seasons — and by this stage — you're more likely to be sacked in spain and italy than the premier league. sure that's little comfort to dean smith and daniel farke right now, olly. nonpandemic seasons, that's a first for me. let's have a quick look at some of the day's other headlines. from the start of next year, fans in the top two tiers of english football, at selected grounds, will be legally allowed to stand for the first time since 1994. chelsea, manchester united, manchester city, tottenham and cardiff are the clubs that will take part in a safe—standing pilot programme. arsenal's emile smith rowe has been called up by england for the first time. it follows the withdrawal of marcus rashford and james ward—prowse from the senior squad for the world cup qualifiers against albania and san marino. england openerjason roy is out of the t20 world cup after tearing a calf muscle in their last match. james vince will replace him in the squad as england prepare for their semi—final against new zealand on wednesday. and india have signed off from the t20 world cup on a high. they already knew that they wouldn't reach the semifinals, but thrashed namibia by nine wickets in dubai. new zealand and pakistan have made it through from their group. it was another great formula one weekend for max verstappen. the red bull driver stretched his lead in the drivers' championship to 19 points after winning the mexico grand prix. lewis hamilton was second, but there was an admission from mercedes that the world champion did well to finish there. i asked our f1 reporter, jenny gow, how that bodes for the last four races of the season. it's the first time this season that it's the first time this season that i felt any sort of confidence within the milton keynes based team that red bull could be champions this year. until now, mercedes have always come back strong, and you always come back strong, and you always thought, you can't write off lewis brazil, but they don't have any of that. this next weekend is going to be crucial. it's a sprint weekend. cast your mind back to silverstone. did not end particularly well for our contenders. it was lewis handles and under verstappen's car, and in the first race, it was max verstappen at very high speed into the crash barrier. hamilton won the race. we know if sprint format weekend heightens the other and want to win in the right way, and want to win in the right way, and| and want to win in the right way, and i think that's very important to the two drivers. they don't want to win in a way that's deemed inappropriate for what has been an amazing season of formula one, so let's hope it goes down to the wire and that it is settled on track. grand slam—winning sisters serena and venus was flooded that some of the householders have onlyjust managed to return. delegates at the climate change conference, cop26, have today been discussing ways to adapt to the impact of changing weather patterns brought on by climate change. it's something the residents of fishlake in south yorkshire know all about. in november 2019, 90% of the homes in the village were inundated with dirty flood water after the river don burst its banks following days of heavy rain. some have only recently been able to get back to their homes. simon king is there. i'm here on the flood plain on the river don, and two years ago today, this whole area was completely flooded. what happened on the day of the flooding at fishlake was just over here, there was a month's worth of rain falling in the space of 24 hours. the months leading up to the part of early november, that's six months worth of rain falling in the space of six weeks, so that lead to devastating floods, not only here in fishlake, but across south yorkshire. climate change is telling us that we are seeing more rainfall in the uk. six of the ten wettest years have occurred since 1998, and the science, physics very clear for everyone. for defences. what happens here in south yorkshire? it was a sea of devastation some two years ago, and that's energised the whole system in terms of looking at new investment. we've put forward 27 specific flood priority programmes. we've been able to secure significant amount of money from the environment agency, and we've invested 5 million of our own money. but there's still a large shortfall in order to finance the work that we want to do, so some significant progress has been made — notjust here to support the resident of fishlake — but further afield. but there's still a lot north of the weather front but colder air getting into the far north—west of scotland and then nothing moves anywhere in a hurry so the front is snaking across england and wales on wednesday, further south on wednesday the grey skies and damp kissed weather, england, east anglia. to the north some bright and sunny spells, a few showers and it's looking mild to the middle of the week at temperatures in the mid teens. it's the end of the week where things could start to kick off. there is quite a lot of uncertainty in this poor cat but it looks like as we look to friday we could see the remnants of a storm we had been watching in the atlantic heading our way so friday it could bring something wet and windy but we will up to date. that's all from the bbc news at six, so it's goodbye from me , and on bbc one we nowjoin the bbc*s news teams where you are. hello, i'm olly foster. here's what's coming up on sportsday. the new yorkshire chairman says sorry to azeem rafiq and thanks him for his bravery in speaking out about the racism he faced. racism or any form of discrimination is not banter. it's simply not acceptable. howe—ay the lads — can eddie steady the ship at newcastle? he's the new head coach. there are four races to go, but have mercedes thrown in the towel in the formula one championship? also coming up in the programme... we'll hear from the williams sisters ahead of a new film that chroincles their incredible rise to the top of the tennis world. good evening. lord kamlesh patel says that there is a clear need for urgent and seismic change at yorkshire cricket. the county has been accused of institutional racism after former player azeem rafiq spoke out about his experiences. following a raft of board resignations, the incoming chairman, lord patel, has thanked rafiq for his bravery in coming forward and says he has a role to play as they look to re—establish trust at the club. our sports correspondent, katie gornall, was at headingley today. katie, lord patel, very clear about what steps need to be taken. it isa it is a huge challenge that lord patel has to steer yorkshire cricket club through this crisis of their own making. it hasn'tjust engulfed the club, but also the wider sport of cricket. speaking to a news conference here at headingley, he promise to change and apologised to azeem rafiq for the botched handling of his allegations of racism and bullying of his time here. the club have been criticised since they published their report in september. they revealed no one would be punished as a result of their investigation. also, describing a racist slur that azeem rafiq was regularly subjected to as friendly, good—natured banter. lord patel dismissed this suggestion when he was speaking to us here today and shared his own story of the vile racism that he experienced growing up racism that he experienced growing up in bradford. it was part of an emotional and personal statement that he let out before taking questions here. this has been a painful and difficult _ this has been a painful and difficult period for yorkshire cricket _ difficult period for yorkshire cricket club and all those patel revealed they spoke for more than six hours before this took place, but azeem rafiq has released a statement this evening. he thanked lord patel, saying "i brought a legal claim because the club refused to acknowledge the problem. for the first time i can remember, i hope this might happen, but i will be watching to ensure that it does." as part of that statement, he calls for a complete leadership change at the club. that's something that lord patel was asked about and he declined to be drawn on the futures of senior figures who are currently running the club. people like martin, the director of cricket, and the ceo. he didn't say whether they will remain in their post in the long term. all he said was he would take time to speak to everybody, but with sponsors having deserted the club and their drones last week and the current band, he knows he needs to act fast if he needs to rebuild trust. ., ., ., , ., trust. katie gornall, many thanks indeed. eddie howe is the new newcastle united head coach, replacing steve bruce, who was sacked almost three weeks ago. he's signed a contract through to the summer of 202a. he's not been in management since he was relegated with bournemouth in august last year. he has a similar task to try and save newcastle. they are 19th in the table, five points from safety after 11 games. here's bbc newcastle's andrew hartley. today, the former manager travelled to tyneside to sign a contract which will keep him at st. james as part until the summer of 202a. the 43—year—old was at brighton on saturday to watch his new side draw 1-1 saturday to watch his new side draw 1—1 in the premier league —— premier league. there's no announcement from the club as to eddie howe's background stop. the club says that will come in due course. they will have a toughjob will come in due course. they will have a tough job on their hands because newcastle are currently marooned in the bottom three of the premier league without a win all season. the club is hoping howe can work his magic that saw him take the club from the brink of relegation from league 2, all the way up to the premier league, where they remained forfive premier the former arsenal boss had turned down the chance to manage at newcastle after holding talks with the club. newcastle are currently in the bottom three with norwich city, with just five points on the board, and eddie howe's first game will be a week on saturday we newcastle entertain brantford. this is andrew hartley for bbc news. so, eddie howe comes in for steve bruce there, and there are a few more premier league appointments in the offing. aston villa and norwich have vacancies. after a rather brutal weekend. olly, if you wantjob security, football management probably isn't for you. aston villa's dean smith and norwich's daniel farke both departed over the weekend. that takes us up to five now for the season, and we're barely past bonfire night. for context, one premier league season has seen this many sackings by this stage. 2004 - 2005 has all 2004 — 2005 has all this. five straight defeats ultimately did it for smith. he put out a statement today saying, "i felt that with important players soon returning to full fitness we would achieve a top half finish." many in the game believe it's a harsh decision. gary lineker thought it was harsh given he'd taken the club up factor. the likes of antonio conte at spurs and now eddie howe at newcastle have time to get settled, but villa and norwich boards also won't now be rushed — and the glare falls off a little bit. here's our chief football writer, phil mcnulty. it gives them time with a couple of weeks _ it gives them time with a couple of weeks to— it gives them time with a couple of weeks to maybe put some how they want to do— ponder how they're doing, how they want to do and whether there is any danger— want to do and whether there is any danger in _ want to do and whether there is any danger in norwich's case of being relegated. and on that relegation theme, if we take a look at the bottom six right now, two clubs are looking for new managers, two have already made the change. but whilst this season is exception with a quarter of premier league managers on their way, traditionally, it's far more cuthroat on the continent. we've crunched the numbers for the last five non—pandemic seasons — and by this stage — you're more likely to be sacked in spain and italy than the premier league. sure that's little comfort to dean smith and daniel farke right now, olly. nonpandemic seasons, that's a first for me. let's have a quick look at some of the day's other headlines. from the start of next year, fans in the top two tiers of english football, at selected grounds, will be legally allowed to stand for the first time since 1994. chelsea, manchester united, manchester city, tottenham and cardiff are the clubs that will take part in a safe—standing pilot programme. arsenal's emile smith rowe has been called up by england for the first time. it follows the withdrawal of marcus rashford and james ward—prowse from the senior squad for the world cup qualifiers against albania and san marino. england openerjason roy is out of the t20 world cup after tearing a calf muscle in their last match. james vince will replace him in the squad as england prepare for their semi—final against new zealand on wednesday. and india have signed off from the t20 world cup on a high. they already knew that they wouldn't reach the semifinals, but thrashed namibia by nine wickets in dubai. new zealand and pakistan have made it through from their group. it was another great formula one weekend for max verstappen. the red bull driver stretched his lead in the drivers' championship to 19 points after winning the mexico grand prix. lewis hamilton was second, but there was an admission from mercedes that the world champion did well to finish there. i asked our f1 reporter, jenny gow, how that bodes for the last four races of the season. it's the first time this season that it's the first time this season that i felt any sort of confidence within the milton keynes based team that red bull could be champions this year. until now, mercedes have always come back strong, and you always come back strong, and you always thought, you can't write off lewis races are unknown because we've not been there before. tar and saudi arabia are new to the calendar. it's a little bit unknown territory. the teams would love to have all the data they've got for brazil, but they don't have any of that. this next weekend is going to be crucial. it's a sprint weekend. cast your mind back to silverstone. did not end particularly well for our contenders. it was lewis handles and under verstappen's car, and in the first race, it was max verstappen at very high speed into the crash barrier. hamilton won the race. we know if sprint format weekend heightens the senses, can the two of them avoid another collision in the last race? i think that's the question everyone is thinking. that takes me on _ question everyone is thinking. that takes me on very _ there's nothing wrong with that and underhand tactics. whoever has her nose in front bumping the other driver off the track. although i don't think going to happen. they both said they respect each other and want to win in the right way, and want to win in the right way, and| and want to win in the right way, and i think that's very important to the two drivers. they don't want to win in a way that's deemed inappropriate for what has been an amazing season of formula one, so let's hope it goes down to the wire and that it is settled on track. grand slam—winning sisters serena and venus replace it with another sport for 2028, in part a reaction to events at the tokyo games, when one horse in particular refused to perform for a leading rider. there has been strong opposition from pentathletes, who want to preserve their sport. team gb's olympic championjoe choong told me why he is one of almost 700 athletes to sign a petition calling for the president of the international union to stand down. obviously, the incident with the standard of riding, and out of 700 of us, there's maybe 15 olympic medallist in the we are all involved. we all understand that the riding has become a problem, but we also see the athletes are a product of the decision that the ipm has made. we want to begin the chance to save our sport by addressing a problem, notjust amputating the problem, notjust amputating the problem completely. moving forward, considering the lack of consultation and the historic lack of consultation over the past 28 years, the best way to move forward is to remove him from office and start a new path forward where the athletes are involved in decision—making for the sport. just are involved in decision-making for the sort. , ., . ., are involved in who have never ridden a one metre 20 course come to the olympics, and it's no surprise that happens, and the athletes are a product of poor decision—making over the last 20 years. as an athlete group, we really want to improve our confidence in riding and also improve rules to make horse welfare more important to us. it's very difficult when we aren't to listen to. , , . difficult when we aren't to was flooded that some of the householders have onlyjust managed to return. delegates at the climate change conference, cop26, have today been discussing ways to adapt to the impact of changing weather patterns brought on by climate change. it's something the residents of fishlake in south yorkshire know all about. in november 2019, 90% of the homes in the village were inundated with dirty flood water after the river don burst its banks following days of heavy rain. some have only recently been able to get back to their homes. simon king is there. i'm here on the flood plain on the river don, and two years ago today, this whole area was completely flooded. what happened on the day of the flooding at fishlake was just over here, there was a month's worth of rain falling in the space of 24 hours. the months leading up to the part of early november, that's six months worth of rain falling in the space of six weeks, so that lead to devastating floods, not only here in fishlake, but across south yorkshire. climate change is telling us that we are seeing more rainfall in the uk. six of the ten wettest years have occurred since 1998, and the science, physics very clear for everyone. for everyone celsius increase, we are likely to see 7% more water vapour, more moisture in the atmosphere. we now need to learn how to adapt to our changing climate. i'mjoined by how to adapt to our changing climate. i'm joined by south yorkshire mayor, danjarvis. thanks forjoining us. we've heard from the environmental agency and from the prime minister about the investment going into flood defences. what happens here in south yorkshire? it was a sea of devastation some two years ago, and that's energised the whole system in terms of looking at new investment. we've put forward 27 specific flood priority programmes. we've been able to secure significant amount of money from the environment agency, and we've invested 5 million of our own money. but there's still a large shortfall in order to finance the work that we want to do, so some significant progress has been made — notjust here to support the resident of fishlake — but further afield. but there's still a lot of work that needs to do.— there's still a lot of work that needs to do. ., ., , ., ,, needs to do. soon after fishlake flooded and _ needs to do. soon after fishlake flooded and we _ needs to do. flooded and we saw it follow across south yorkshire, it was declared an emergency. that's part of the problem with climate change. mitigating global warming. how can we put a plan forward to adapt to more flooding?— we put a plan forward to adapt to more flooding? there is no doubt that the claimant _ more flooding? there is no doubt that the claimant emergency i more flooding? there is no doubt that the claimant emergency we i that the claimant emergency we are dealing with it was a significant contributing factor to the flooding we saw in here and elsewhere. one thing we've focused on isn't natural based solutions, concrete can only ever be a part of the solution and that's why we are looking at what we can do in terms of our tree—planting programme. we are making... to try and slow the flow, so that by the time the water that's fallen gets to fishlake and elsewhere, it causes significantly less damage. but nobody really has any doubt that climate change is a massive factor, and that's why it's incredibly important that working with the environmental agency, we bring forward significant investment because we will need that in the future. d0 because we will need that in the
