that in this kind of throw away, pardon the pun, quip about recycling and saying it is not the main issue, which, you know, most people would refute that, especially people who focus on climate change and the climate emergency. i think this is part of the problem, looking ahead at the climate summit, it is really difficult and it's a really difficult and it's a really difficult task ahead. lots of countries are divided about phasing out fossil fuel ash fossil fuels. there is a lot of disagreement and reluctance by some of the worst polluters to wean themselves off their addiction to fossil the t20 world cup in sharjah. the scots qualified for the super 12 stage with three wins out of three in the first group stage, but were hammered by afghanistan today losing by 130 runs. our sports correspondent joe wilson reports. there has never been a more significant occasion for scotland's cricketers. it has demanded dedication, inspiration, qualification. they have now earned games against some of the worlds highest ranked nations and that includes afghanistan. afghanistan's includes afghanistan. afg hanistan's men's includes afghanistan. afghanistan's men's team, at least, cricket has meant global connexion and rapid rise. the future is seriously uncertain. their batteries enjoyed themselves here. but there is mark watts to spoil the fun. he's gone, scotland are never down for long. neither, however, was the ball. 11 sixes in afghanistan's 190, neither, however, was the ball. 11 sixes in afghanistan's190, scott follow that. sadly, they couldn't. tough enough facing afghanistan's spin bowlers, but then the big gatekeeper holds a catch like this. the match became afghanistan's occasion. 60 all out. 0ut. well, thatis occasion. 60 all out. 0ut. well, that is world cup cricket. joe wilson, bbc news. so a bruising defeat for the scots but their coach is convinced that his side will come back stronger we've got some world—class players on our team, we've got some world—class players on ourteam, but we've got some world—class players on our team, but given my opportunity, given more time under the pressure like we had this evening, i have no doubt that the performance will keep being more consistent, and i don't think tonight because miklos defines us as a team or defines them as individuals. i think it's a game of cricket wrappings turn pretty quickly. you know, character is defined by how much you come back from something like this. staying with cricket — ben stokes says he's *buzzing' after being added to the england squad for thsi winter's ashes series. the all—rounder*s been given the all clear after a second operation on a fractured finger and taking time out to prioritise his mental health. speaking to naga munchetty on bbc radio five live — former england opener michael carberry says stokes can expect the usual hostile reception from the aussies when he arrives there he will be copping it, not only in the crowd, it would become nowadays, as people tend to do, they sort of hanging out on media and think they are bit clever, have a pop it in there as well, so i think for me, my only advice to him would be as much as he can, just try and channel his energies when he is on the pitch, you know, he doesn't need me to tell them that off the pitch. i think it's about the england squad just trying to get around ten, trying, i suppose, help him avoid certain situations and just have a good to her as he can and obviously someone they can has a great tour, you know commanding england's chances are very, very good. british number one cameron norrie will lead the gb bid to win the davis cup finals after being named in an initial four—man squad. norrie — who won the indian wells masters just a couple of weeks ago — will bejoined by dan evans and doubles specialists joe salisbury and neal skupski. andy murray has ruled himself out of the event so a fifth player will be confirmed in due course. speaking of andy murray, he's just achieved his best result this year with a fine performance to beat wimbledon semi finalist, hubert hurkacz at the vienna open in austria. he had to do it the hard way, in three sets coming through 6—1i—6—7 6—3— it's the first time murray's beaten a top 10 player in over a year. but the british number 2 dan evans is already out of the competition — he lost in straight sets to the spanish teenage carlos alcaraz, who'll play murray in the next round. staying with tennis, unvaccinated players are set to be allowed to compete at the australian open but will face two weeks of quarantine and regular testing, according to a letter given to wta players. australian ministers had said players withoutjabs would not be able to enter the country for the tournament. but the wta players* council says it's been told all competitors will be able to go to melbourne injanuary. a number of players — including 35% of those on the men's atp tour — remain unvaccinated. novak djokovic, the men's world number one and nine—time australian open champion, said last week he didn't want to reveal his vaccination status. 0le gunnar solskjaer called it the darkest day of his managerial career and pundits seem divided on whether he'll be at the helm at manchester united much longer following yesterday's humiliating 5—nil home to liverpool is a result that's piled more pressure on the united boss who's lost three of his last four league games. despite questions around his future, solskjaer says he's come too far to give up now. we've been getting the thoughts of united fans. i think he must go, only thing i can say. i think he just needs that chance, i really do. he's got to go. he's a nice guy. probabty— he's got to go. he's a nice guy. probably not the right man for that oh. bye— bye. hello there. after a day of sunshine and showers on monday, the weather on tuesday is going to look very different, and here's why. this cloud here in the atlantic is pushing in from the west, and that's bringing with it some outbreaks of rain. ahead of that, though, with some clearer skies, it will be a bit cooler across eastern scotland and eastern parts of england, but out to the west, it's milder start the day with this rain around. some quite heavy rain too. that rain shouldn't last too long in northern ireland, we will see a a spell of rain pushing eastwards through the morning across scotland and northern england, but the rain further south tends to become light and patchy. most of that rain will have cleared in the afternoon, leaving some drizzle around some western hills, but to the east of high ground, perhaps some sunshine, many places becoming dry in the afternoon. strong south—westerly winds, very mild day. temperatures widely16—17 celsius, quite a bit warmer than it was on monday for the northern half of the uk. but there is still some rain in the far northwest. that's on that weather front there, and that is going to move its way southwards overnight and into wednesday. it's going to hang around across some different parts of the uk during the day. all the while, though, we are pulling in the air from a long way south, which is why it is so mild for late october. but there is some rain around, which is going to be quite happy over some of the hills. that rain mainly affecting north wales, northwest england, could push back into parts of northern ireland, more especially into southern scotland. to the northwest, there will be some sunshine for a while and some for a while and some showers, and to the south of our rain band, it should be brightening up. a little bit of sunshine coming through, still quite windy, but very mild. temperatures getting up to 18 celsius. now, looking at the rain fall accumulation during wednesday and thursday. i want to highlight the areas that will see the happiest of the rain. these are these bright colours here. it looks like it's going to be particularly wet in the southern uplands, but also into cumbria, and that could lead to some because that rain is still around on thursday, it may turn a bit drier across some northwestern parts of scotland and also northern ireland as the rainjust pivots into more of england and wales. through the midlands, much of eastern england, it's likely to still be dry and with a bit of sunshine, those temperatures again reaching 18 celsius. so, a lot going on over the next few days or so. it's going to be quite windy. the winds are going to be in from the southwest, which is why it is going to be so mild, but as we have seen, there will be some rain around, mainly for the western side of the uk, and that will be happy in the hills. welcome to newsday. reporting live from singapore, i'm karishma vaswani. the headlines... the un warns of a countdown to catastrophe in afghanistan, with half the country going hungry and millions of people facing starvation. people are desperate. this little girl has been sold by her parents so the family can buy food. we know there are other families here who sold their children, and even while we've been here, another person came up to one of our team and asked if we'd like to buy their child. the desperation and the urgency of this situation is hard to put in words. new covid rules are coming soon for travellers to the us. most will need proof of vaccination, but bans on non—us citizens arriving from many countries will end.
