of the afternoon, the risk of plenty of showers here. for northern ireland, england and wales, sunny spells and scattered showers. if you dodge the showers it will be quite pleasant. it is quite mild for the time of year. temperatures peaking at 16 or 17. through this evening we will keep clearer skies across eastern england so temperatures could fall away. however, out to the west, another area of low pressure moving in and look at the isobar is squeezing together. the wind will strengthen in the rain turn quite heavy. it will start off on a more chilly note across the east but wet and windy further west and the rain means business, pushing on across western scotland, northern ireland, north—west england and wales to begin with. it there will then drift steadily north and east into scotland through the afternoon with gusts of up to 50 mph on exposed coasts. across england and wales elsewhere, bright and breezy with more cloud generally with the south—westerly wind but temperatures still pretty good for this time of year. likely to see highs of 17 or 18 as we going to see highs of 17 or 18 as we going to see highs of 17 or 18 as we going to see highs of 17 or 18 as we go into tuesday. that front still in the north will gradually drift south out of scotland, into the north of england by the middle part of the week, so for areas like the lake district and parts of lancashire we could see heavy rain and significant totals developing. that front is the dividing line between that very warm moist air pushing up from the south. by the middle of the week, that is when we are likely to see the highest temperatures. a bit of a contrast. sunshine and warmth in the south. a weather front sitting across northern england and parts of north wales but may be a little brighter in the far north of scotland. this mile theme will continue for another day at least but it looks likely we will continue to see some heavy rain at times further north and west and just a little bit fresher but turning more showery and unsettled towards the end of the week. a reminder of our top story... the world food programme says afghanistan is on a countdown to catastrophe, with millions facing starvation and evidence that some families are even selling their children to make ends meet. that's all from the bbc news at one, so it's goodbye from me, and on bbc one we nowjoin the bbc*s news teams where you are. good afternoon. it's 1.30pm and here's your latest sports news... we start with a big boost for england as they prepare for the ashes — ben stokes has been added to the squad that'll head to australia next month ahead of december*s first test. the allrounder*s been given the all clear after a second operation on a fractured finger. he's also been taking time out to prioritise his mental health. our sports corrspondentjoe wilson told me stokes* presence is important for the side. notjust a question of the runs he could score our wickets he could take, even the catches he could hold, it is really his influence and his position, his charisma, the respect he will immediately enforce when it comes to the australian team. australia will see england completely differently with ben stokes in it. we completely differently with ben stokes in it.— completely differently with ben stokes in it. ~ ., ., ., stokes in it. we know how important ben stokes is — stokes in it. we know how important ben stokes is to _ stokes in it. we know how important ben stokes is to england. _ stokes in it. we know how important | ben stokes is to england. presumably he is coming back now because he sees 100% ready to go again. crucially, two elements in the statement. firstly, they are going to treat it cautiously with ben stokes's come come back. he will have a month with the team before he plays in the ashes. stokes himself says he is looking forward to seeing his mates and being on the field with them. if you can feel thatjoy again of being part of the team, part of england, part of cricket, then for me, that is the most important factor in this whole thing. next to what ole gunnar solskjaer*s called the darkest day in his managerial career — after manchester united's 5—0 defeat at home to liverpool in the premier league. it's a result that's piled more pressure on the united boss who's lost three of his last four league games. after the match he signed autographs at old trafford, although thousands left the ground well before the final whistle. despite questions around his future at the club, solskjaer says he's come too far to give up now: ido i do believe in myself. i do believe i do believe in myself. i do believe i am getting close to what i want with the club. i think what we have done, what i have seen the development, of course the results lately have not been good enough. i have to say. hands up. that brings doubt in anyone's cosmic mind, probably, but i have to keep strong i do believe in what we are doing. chelsea striker fran kirby says winning her 50th cap for england will be "really special". the 28—year—old, who's overcome injury and illness during her career, is expected to feature against latvia tomorrow when england will hope to make it four wins in a row in their world cup qualifying campaign. it has been a roller—coaster, for sure. it is a journey i am really proud of and one that i think looking back i probably would not change a lot. i have been through a lot but it has made me who i am. i will get my 50th cap and play at wembley in a competitive fixture. i am really happy about how it is going and hopefully i can keep building. and lewis hamilton says the formula one season looks very tough going forwards after max verstappen held him off on the last lap to win the united states grand prix and extend his lead in the formula one title race. the battle intensified as hamilton came to within a second of verstappen, but he just couldn't get past the dutchman on the final lap. the red bull driver increases his advantage in the championship to 12 points with five races remaining. i'll have more for you in the next hour. for now, back to you, ben. thank you very much indeed. in sudan a state of emergency has been announced together with the dissolution of the transitional government. the head of the ruling council, general abdel fattah al—burhan, has said elections will take place in 2023. earlier soldiers arrested most members of the government and other civilian leaders. our senior africa correspondent anne soy is in neighbouring kenya. she said it is difficult to get a clear picture of what's happening in sudan. it is not easy but we have seen some of the images that have been posted online, presumably by sudanese who are monitoring the situation and have means to send that information out. hundreds of thousands... you know, many people coming out in large numbers on the streets of sudan to what they call resist a military takeover of government. there have been calls in mosques, because apart from internet shutdowns, they have been experiencing shutdowns of mobile networks, and therefore, they have been using mosques to mobilise people to come out in the streets, pro—democracy demonstrators, to resist attempts by the military to take over power. in the last hour, the general abdel fattah al—burhan, he is the head of the ruling council, has spoken and he has said he has dissolved the body that he leads, as well as the government, which is civilian led. earlier in the day, the military arrested the prime minister abdalla hamdok. they are holding him and his wife at an undisclosed location. they have arrested several cabinet members. indeed, there is so much tension now. people are trying to make sense of what has happened. a statement from the prime minister's office came earlier and warned against tearing into shreds the accord, the deal that has enabled the military and civilians to share power. and so we are waiting to see what happens. the united states has spoken. the embassy in sudan and has said those who are disrupting the process, the road map to democracy must stand down. phone networks have agreed to automatically block internet calls from oversees that appear to be from uk numbers. the watchdog ofcom says the move is intended to stop millions of scam calls made by criminals based abroad. it comes after phone companies were criticised by the national crime agency for failing to tackle a huge rise in scam calls and texts over the past year. the soft drinks industry produces a70 billion plastic bottles every year, designed to be used just once and then thrown away. around a quarter of them are made by one company — coca—cola. nearly four years ago, facing growing criticism, coke came up with a plan to tackle their plastic pollution problem. but an investigation by bbc panorama reveals that they are struggling to make the progress required to meet their promises. and in some places, particularly in some of the world s poorer nations, things are getting much worse. our correspondent sofia bettiza has the story. here is a refreshment you can enjoy quickly and conveniently. in the 1950s, coca—cola was sold in glass bottles. the company would collect them, wash them and reuse them. these lighter plastic bottles take lbs off your shopping load. by the 70s, coke was promoting plastic. single use plastic is a massive money saver for many companies, including coca—cola. they use incredibly cheap plastic to make that packaging, they put it on the market and then it isjob done, it's gone. in the last three years alone, 156 billion of coca—cola's plastic bottles have been littered, burned or dumped. but coke knew it had an image problem, so announced a plan to recycle more bottles called world without waste. but if you look at the small print, there is an omission. their bottles are only recyclable where infrastructure exists. this is the pacific island of samoa. in february, coke stopped producing glass bottles here and started shipping in thousands of plastic bottles. the population here in samoa is only 200,000. we don't generate enough waste to have a recycling facility for plastic bottles here on the island. coca—cola have set up a scheme to pay people $1 for every kilo of plastic bottles they collect. but, so far, none has been exported for recycling. halfway across the globe from samoa is uganda. here, not enough bottles are being collected to meet coca—cola's recycling promises. coca—cola says they will collect one bottle for each bottle they sell in uganda. but they can never do that. they can ever achieve it. in the capital, kampala, the recycling system largely depends on informal waste pickers. most of them are single mothers with their children, earning around $1 per day. the whole bottled drinks sector has a recycling problem. but coca—cola is the by far biggest company, selling 3500 plastic bottles every second. and nearly four years after making their world without waste pledge, our investigation has revealed that coca—cola is struggling to make the headway required to meet their green goals. coca—cola is an absolute master of greenwashing. greenwashing is pretending something is green when actually it is anything but green. and evidence from break free from plastic suggest that more plastic coke packaging is littered than any other brand. coca—cola say they are making good progress but have a long way to go. that they are campaigning to encourage recycling in samoa and that they are working hard to help waste pickers. but if the biggest global plastic polluter doesn't reach its targets, the world's poorest will suffer even more. nicola sturgeon has said that the scottish government will be a bridge builder at the cop26 climate change summit in glasgow next week. the first minister said she wanted to create spaces, initiatives and forums for non—governmental bodies to talk to countries at the conference. she also acknowledged the scottish government had missed annual targets three years running and would publish a catch—up plan. i know that the prime minister and the uk government are determined to step up in the days ahead and show real commitment and leadership. and the scottish government will do everything we can to help. after all, this summit will shape the future of the world we live in. so absolutely nothing, certainly not party politics, should stand in the way of us working together towards a successful outcome. one of scotland's objectives during the summit itself is to be a bridge builder, to connect those whose voices are too rarely heard with those making the decisions. cop26 will see some of the most influential people in the world descend on glasgow to work out how best to tackle climate change. but as well as the likes of us presidentjoe biden and prime minister borisjohnson, there will also be some younger environmental champions too. our correspondent phil mackie has been to meet a family of eight year old triplets chosen to represent the uk at the event. meet britain's youngest official environmental champions, out on their regular after—school litter pick. i'm mbetmi. i'm waimi. and i'm yimi. and we are the one—step greener ambassadors! here i've got a packet of blueberries, i think. i don't know what it is. but who just leaves it here? they've been doing this since they were six, after being inspired at primary school, where they learned about waste and recycling. we've got a plastic bottle. encouraged by their parents, they decided to go out and do something about it. i've got a bag or something. i don't know what it is, - but they could have just put it in the recycling bin. nottingham city council gave them their litter picking kit and their work has been recognised by the government. it's not just about them being nominated as cop26 ambassadors, but it's also the inspiration behind it. i hope this will inspire more people to think that if six years old could think about their planet, and for two years they've doing what they are doing, i hope they will continue to inspire more people. but obviously i'm very, very happy and proud of them. thank you. this is not a drill. we are living in the beginning of a mass extinction. esther has helped them spread the message through their own youtube channel. we are talking about a very important part about recycling. we've been keeping these boxes for 18 months. back out on the litter pick the bag is filling up. obviously these people who are gathering together in glasgow, they are going to be making really important decisions. what things would you like them to do? how can they make the world better? the three rs — reduce, reuse, recycle. first, i think they should start teaching climate change in school, so when they grow up they can change the world. and we need everybody to do the three rs. i honestlyjust think everybody should try their hardest - to help this environment. time to put the cat in the bag or the bin. sadly, it's a never—ending task. at least today's work is done. phil mackie, bbc news, nottingham. well done to them. let's take a look now at some of the stories making the headlines across the uk. last week the row over access to gps moved up another notch with the announcement that many will be voting on industrial action. the government, and many patients, want gps to offer more face to face appointments and easier ways of getting in touch. gps though say the shortage of doctors means those left are working at an unsustainable rate.so what's it like working in a surgery at the moment? our health correspondent gill dummigan went to the poplars medical centre in salford. the phones here are always busy but twice a day, they re off the hookclip ? louise officer, this morning — they moved away from the m25 and came into canary wharf, liverpool street and by southwark bridge. they want a commitment from government to insulate more homes. greg mackenzie reports. well, the last of the insulate britain protesters are being unglued just behind me. they set about their action here on southwark bridge about 9.20am this morning, causing major delays. now, there were about 60 or so of the protesters, all of which have been arrested. this is incidentally, the 14th action carried out by insulate britain. they have had a ten day break. they said they would be back and they were indeed this morning, causing delays for many drivers here in the capital, some of which have sympathised with the protesters. now, in terms of the action and what insulate britain are calling for, they want all new—build properties in britain to be insulated. they say if they are insulated, there is less energy being used, thus polluting the atmosphere less. and they are saying they are going to continue with these actions for weeks to come, until the government take heed and listen to them. hospitality businesses across the west of england say they can't meet demand from customers because of severe staff shortages. the hoteliers association say they have around 500 vacancies in bristol alone. and what's frustrating is that bookings are up this week for half term.
