washington where a senate committee has heard the social media giant facebook accused of putting profits aware of the health in front of the welfare of its users. she says that only tighter regulations can help protect children from social media. but the tech chain says safeguards are already in place. here's our north american reporter. it's ringing. eleanor and freya are both 1a, and like many teenagers, they're both on instagram. as a teenager, you're looking at these people, all these models, and, you know, influencers, they all are very skinny and they have, like, a perfect body. and when you're looking at that and then kind of comparing yourself to it, it's very...i think it could be really damaging. when you're feeling at your worst and then you go on instagram and you see things that are, like, targeted at you because you have looked at these kinds of things before, you see them, like, models, influencers, celebrities, things like that, and you are just like, "oh, i will never be like that." eleanor and freya's concerns are in fact shared by one rather important company — facebook, which owns instagram. in fact, leaked internal research found that teens who struggle with mental health say that instagram makes it worse. the woman who leaked that report is called frances haugen, and today she gave evidence in washington. the documents that i have provided to congress prove that facebook has repeatedly misled the public about what its own research reveals about the safety of children. she concluded with a devastating message that driven by money rather than the mental health of its users. facebook consistently resolve these conflicts in favour of its own profits. here in silicon valley, facebook has pushed back, saying that some of the research presented is misleading, and despite the fact that instagram concluded that it could be damaging for children's mental health, it also says that it can have a positive impact. reacting to the evidence was facebooks president of policy. please make every time us teenagers having a bad experience, it is too much. we are prioritising safety above profit in the very fact that we are asking certain questions. facebook has said it has postponed a controversial project to create instagram for kids. but we now know that people within the company and some very important politicians in washington believe the company has put profit over the mental health of teenage girls. james clayton, bbc news, san francisco. you saw in james you saw injames report there the reaction from facebook, let's hear meanwhile, a big flare—up between china and taiwan with both sides accusing the other provocations. in the background, time one insists that it background, time one insists thatitis background, time one insists that it is an independent nation while beijing considers it a rebel province. for more than a year now, china's air force has been reportedly flying missions a little too close for taiwan's comfort. and last four days alone, nearly hundred 50 chinese warplane had flown into taiwan's defence zone over an area close to the taiwan controlled islands. the air defence zone is not the same is taiwan's territorial airspace but it is causing alarm in taipei. now, for its part, beijing has blamed rising tension on the presence of us and allied presence in the region. we remain concerned by the people's republic of china by the provocative actions and we urge beijing to seize its military, diplomatic and coercion against taiwan and we have a combined interest in peace didn't stability that is i will continue to support taiwan and have it maintain its defensive capabilities. an independent think tank and also a former australian diplomat in beijing with lots of experience dealing with these sorts of issues, i asked her how significant these manoeuvres are.- her how significant these manoeuvres are. , . ., ., ., manoeuvres are. the escalation ofthe manoeuvres are. the escalation of the past _ manoeuvres are. the escalation of the past few _ manoeuvres are. the escalation of the past few years _ manoeuvres are. the escalation of the past few years is - of the past few years is definitely note worthy and so, china has been sending planes into this area for a couple of years now but the numbers over the quite significant and do show it escalating on their part. the timing is really interesting because it does come just after china's comejust after china's national day, just ahead of taiwan's own national day which is in a couple of days. and i think this really does send for china, a strong domestic signal back home that it still holds the upper hand, it's still not going to bow down to what it seizes pressure from washington to taiwan alone and i think that's a really important message they're trying to send as we head into some important daysin as we head into some important days in the communist parties political calendar. it's almost like an election season for them, considered to be a bit of them, considered to be a bit of the political campaign leading to the conference next year. how much further do you see this escalating? should we expect more sorts of these flight paths into the air zone of taiwan?— flight paths into the air zone of taiwan? ., , ., , , of taiwan? one of the problems ofthe of taiwan? one of the problems of the regularity _ of taiwan? one of the problems of the regularity of _ of taiwan? one of the problems of the regularity of these - of the regularity of these kinds of manoeuvres is that people stop taking them seriously and they can continue in numbers and they can continue to force the taiwanese side to scramble theirjets and respond and continue to intimidate and coerce the taiwanese people but ultimately, china is not looking to pick a fight right this moment. i don't think that is in the best interest. they know that they're not ready for such a conflict if they wanted to go down that path and so, i think one of the problems is you end up in the credible situation and were all talking about it now as we should be, but that is going to keep going up but that is going to keep going up in numbers i think there's going to understand. the problem as we have had so many of these incursions, the risk of these incursions, the risk of an accident goes up and that's where the miscommunications in military actions between taiwanese and chinese fighters is entirely possible and could really lead to an escalation that nobody is looking for. to an escalation that nobody is saying that the public needs answers rather to ensure that something like this can never happen again. last week, they were sentenced to a whole life term in prison. 0ur whole life term in prison. our special correspondent has this report. summary questions after her so many questions after sarah everard's murder. how could wayne couzens be a police officer? why wasn't he stopped earlier? why are women still not safe? nearly a week after we learned the full distressing details of what a police officer did to sarah everard, there will now be a wide—ranging inquiry. the public have a right to know what systematic failures enabled his continued employment as a police officer. we need answers as to why this was allowed to happen. applause i can confirm today that there will be an inquiry to give the independent oversight needed to ensure that something like this can never happen again. the first part will look at couzens, his previous behaviour and any opportunities missed to stop him. the second part will examine policing, looking at vetting, how police investigate themselves and their behaviour, but the inquiry won't have the power to demand witnesses and evidence. but ministers promise that will change if needed. it's not statutory, it's notjudge—led, both of which we think it needs to be. and it can'tjust be about wayne couzens, it's got to be about the entire aspect of the case and also about women's treatment by the met. hello, good morning. 0nly yesterday, the met police commissioner announced a review into her own force by an independent person working alongside her. there's also the police regulator investigation into whether the met and kent police properly looked into three indecent exposure allegations against couzens. the home office can't say if any of the inquiry will be held in public. but the conclusions will be published. and just last month, the police inspectorate said there was an epidemic of violence against women and it needed to be treated as seriously as terrorism is, so it's not as if the government and the forces haven't been aware of many of these issues. sabina nessa, one of more than 80 women killed by men since sarah everard, but this morning, the prime minister refused to back calls for misogyny to be classified as a hate crime because he believes current laws are sufficient. this new inquiry must notjust highlight the problems but make the changes, so that all women can be safe. lucy manning, bbc news. such huge ramifications for what is happening. two completely different story now, what to tell you how to pop uk the vast improvement over what we saw in the northeast of england and particularly badly affected by the rain in about a month's worth of rain following a 2k hours. in this day will be pretty way to in parts of scotland. the low pressure that brought the rain and the strong wind is moving out of the way. we've got the next atlantic weather system coming in from the west and in between the two, a small window of dry weather and sunshine. with clear skies to start the day across large parts of scotland and northern ireland, pretty chilly out there. but for eastern parts of england, more rain surround and the ranch and move away. those northerly winds will gradually ease in the cloud eventually breaking up. do we of the slice of dry weather and sunshine to western areas are going to be clouding over steadily moved got some rain in the afternoon particularly across northern ireland. i have that, something a bit warmer than today across much of england and wales. it could be quite chilly in the evening with the clear skies and eastern england and after the west though, the cloud is to begin thickening up to bring some rain and western scotland and elton to lift the temperatures as well. as we head into the end of the week, it is a complete turnaround really because there is much warmer weather on the way and thatis warmer weather on the way and that is because the winds are going to be coming in all the way around the tropics and bring in those higher temperatures, bringing in the moisture in the cloud and we still got the weather front just draped across the northwestern part of the uk to bring in some rain. that is mainly affecting northern and western scotland during thursday, some heavier rain for argyle and highland stop some rain threads northern ireland wasn't damp and england and wales, brighterskies wasn't damp and england and wales, brighter skies further east. but despite a lot of lot of loss of cloud, look at these temperatures. 19 in belfast could make 20 in newcastle, much, much warmer than it was on tuesday. that was to be lighter for england and wales on friday, some fog in the morning to the mittens towards the southeast of england and lifting to bring some sunny spells, still a threat of rain in the northwest parts of the uk with some sunshine at times. and still does temperatures again widely 18 to 21 c. the next question is how long will it last? saturday looks quite warm for millions of maintenance, and northern ireland, as we can goes on it will gradually cool down from the north. this is bbc news. we will
