hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. with me are lucy fisher, deputy political editor at the telegraph and ailbhe rea, political correspondent at the new statesman. tomorrow's front pages, starting with... "fuel rationed as uk's petrol stations hit by shortage of lorry drivers" is the headline in the i, which says bp, esso and tesco are warning of shortages at some forecourts because of supply chain issues. the telegraph reports "alarm as bp begins petrol rationing". the paper talks of the spectre of panic buying looming, while a *winter of discontent* is feared, as energy companies go bust. that's next to an image of prince harry and meghan in a *royal tour* — in inverted commas — of new york. "we*re running on empty" is the sun*s take and it warns of a threat to food on the shelves of shops. the daily mail has the same headline, and says that after the energy drama there are new fears of petrol shortages. "don*t panic, urges number ten," reports the times, which says ministers have discussed putting soldiers on standby to drive petrol tankers. the guardian has "warning of fuel shortages amid supply chain crisis" alongside a picture of primary school teacher sabina nessa who is believed to have been murdered as she walked through a park in south east london. the ft*s main story is how an interest rate rise moves *closer* as the the bank of england is predicting inflation to pass 4%. the paper also reports on how former chancellor, george osborne, has secured an advisory role with a group founded by russian oligarch oleg deripaska who is linked to president putin. and "the name*s craig, commander craig". the express covers how the royal navy honour the 007 star with the same rank as james bond. so, let*s begin. kicking off of the times, it*s got some interesting details in the story. talking about the prime minister urging people not to panic by but, pp restricting which made the situation deteriorate into drive these petrol tankers. the number of issues facing government right now is pretty serious and that*s reflected across the papers, including those who support the government. talking about the problem _ support the government. talking about the problem of _ support the government. talking about the problem of fuel - support the government. talking i about the problem of fuel shortages and the lorry driver crisis is leading to the shortages on the shelves and shops we have seen and restriction options and choices and some products so far, severe warnings that can lead to empty shelves, at least in some categories of products fairly soon if this problem isn*t solved, as well is that, you*ve got the soaring energy bills we know the bills are going to rise by, and that*s at the same time as poorfamilies on universal credit will see the end of the £20 a week uplift is introduced at the beginning of the pandemic and so, there*s a real cost of living chris is coming on down the line as well. beyond that, i think there*s huge concerns about inflation and what that means, both for consumers and also for the political options open to the chancellor this autumn as they growth of the budget process in dealing with spending bids from different departments and they need to set the departmental budget. it*s all shaping up to be a very crunchy autumn and winterfor all shaping up to be a very crunchy autumn and winter for this government.— autumn and winter for this government. autumn and winter for this covernment. . ., . ., , , how much of this is down to decisions that boris johnson | down to decisions that borisjohnson has taken, is taking on the question of shortages of international lori drivers that was linked to the brexit agenda and is there going to be a shift on that, do you think? there has to be some movement from somewhere. i think it is interesting that there*s this ideological split in there*s this ideological split in the cabinet on how to fix it. it*s not an easy thing to fix immediately, there were some tweaks to the way people qualify for the licence and rules around that have been eased slightly to make it easier for people to get their credentials to take up the job. it is very difficult and we have seen some firms offering up to £55,000 a year salary for lori drivers and thatis year salary for lori drivers and that is just phenomenally high salary considering that the media which in the uk is 31 a year. when the sellers are so high, many companies cannot afford that and we have seen the limits of the market we have seen already in recent weeks with industries, the fertiliser plant that made c02 as a by—product decided to shutter its plants because the cost of natural gas was soaring. we may see people decide to just deal with the shortages or tolerate shortages instead ofjust having a four count that amount to pay for deliveries in the short term. it is a big problem and it is difficult to see what the government to do with the short term, even the idea of lifting some of the immigration bars and allowing foreign drivers to come and would necessarily solve it. where are releasing salaries resin places like poland that have supplied a lot of lori drivers to the uk and so, it is a tricky one. moving on to the daily express, keep calm and cannot carry on shopping. they are saying that there confident about —— can all carry on. i*m going to go and flip my petrol tank and go buy a bit of extra food. it is just a normal human reaction and that is what panicking and actually, there is some truth to these fears. we should — there is some truth to these fears. we should just repeat the government message that everyone should not panic by because that does create a run. let me move on to the other huge challenges that everyone is facing at the moment. the ft front page is talking about inflation rates rising and moving closer. we have all noticed prices going up, haven*t we? we have thought that interest rates may still stay low for a while, but looks as though that could shift. the bank of england, inflation will remain above 4% and more than double the target and at the moment, there has not been a move to raise interest rates, but tellingly, we have seen norway, the first big western economy to raise interest rates today coming out of the pandemic and his hands from the us federal reserve that they may follow suit and that raises huge problems forfamilies of suit and that raises huge problems for families of mortgages and consumers and prices rise already. the cost of living with rising energy prices and the wholesale price of natural gas and the unprecedented levels. but also from the political angle, for reducing interest rates rise in the uk, that will be very difficult for the public finances and already we see public finances and already we see public net debt at 107 gdp for the first time since the 1960s and the cost of servicing the debt year could rise by as much as 20 billion if that is just a one percentage point rise and that is very worrying times for sunak as he receives all sorts of demands from every department, demands for education, catch up spending, demands for money to sort the courts backlog in the black hole and the railways budget and also, borisjohnson*s flexion of leveling of programme demands investment and infrastructure and rejuvenating high streets and a lot of difficult choices for the chancellor ahead, of difficult choices for the chancellorahead, not of difficult choices for the chancellor ahead, not easy to borrow any of the deficit is already a 300 billion, and especially when sunak is artie gone out on a limb for the rights to national insurance, there*s not a lot of fat to cut anywhere. so, very difficult choices out of this government.— anywhere. so, very difficult choices out of this government. labour next week after that, _ out of this but it is certainly key to the governments net zero target to the governments net zero target to reach zero emissions by 2050. and in the meantime, we*ve got plants in the uk that only produce about 17% of energy on the grid. that is sent to half by 2024 and as many of them come off line and i think it is interesting the story on the front of the times system of government is looking at partnering with us nuclear reactor firms and currently, points he in somerset, one of the new uk parliaments has been built in conjunction with chinese investment, which is made a lot of the secure and china hawks in parliament very uncomfortable and i think there is growing geopolitical tensions being overreliance on china and very critical national infrastructures projects. and so, i think we*ll see more partnering with the west on energy and other kind of projects, such as this but it is a long—term project and a lot of hoops to jump over and final point to make on that is nuclear as expensive as well and we*re talking about energy prices rising and not necessarily going to be cheaper of for consumers. what makes very quickly, the daily star, when i grow up, i want to be a
