hello and welcome to sportsday — safe standing gets the government greenlight, the football supporters association says it's a victory for ordinary people. say cheese, the european*s are looking to win over the american fans ahead of the ryder cup. and a bleak picture for swimmers, with a billion pounds needed to stop thousands of pools closing by the end of the decade. hello and welcome to sportsday. from the new year, fans will be able to stand at selected grounds in the premier league and championship, something that has been banned since 1994. today clubs have been given the opportunity to join a pilot programme and offer licensed standing areas. we'll hear from the football supporters association in a moment who have campaigned for this for decades but first let's cross live to stamford bridge, and speak to our senior sports news reporter laura scott, laura chelsea are one of those clubs that are expected to sign up for this. how is all this going to work? chelsea probably one of these clubs that will want to sign up for this. as you say the legislation in this area hasn't changed for more than 25 years but several clubs have been future proofing their stadia in anticipation for potential change in legislation. the government has been looking at the issue of safe standing and football for a couple of years and they said now is the right time to make progress. we know from the sports ground safety authority they will invite clubs to apply to be part of the pilots which will begin from january. it's not guaranteed yet which clubs will be chosen from the premier league and the championship. although chelsea did resiliently introduced rail seating in a couple of their stance was that they said they wanted to be ready and perp paired for the government to introduce safe standing. perhaps they will apply to be part of this. i have been speaking to fans outside the stadium tonight and many of those i spoke to are in favour of safe standing. among those i spoke to said that they felt it would give fans more choice, they thought it would create a better atmosphere and they thought that also it might be safer for those who want to sit and those who want to stand. i clearly given that the legislation came about as a result of the hillsborough disaster, this is an emotive subject. certainly is. will get onto that right now. live for us at stamford bridge. live for us at stamford bridge. liverpool are one of those clubs also expected to take part, although they are of course sensitive to the reasoning behind the taylor report that outlawed standing in the wake of the 1989 hillsbrough disaster in which 97 of their fans lost their lives. louise brooks lost her brother but welcomes this new legislation. i just want every football fan to be safe, that's my priority. and i want them to really start enjoying themselves again. i stood in there with andrew when i was 14. and i know what the atmosphere is like and i do feel the atmosphere has gone from a lot of grounds because people sitting. people can have the choice whether they want to stand or whether they want to stand or whether they want to stand or whether they want to say it. it's given the fancy choice again, ifeel. pete daykin co—ordinated football supporter*s association safe standing campaign pete, a very important day this, i spoke to him earlier. it's a tremendous day for us. it's been years since the report was published and so the understanding for the top two divisions. it's been a real team effort from a huge bunch of people who have worked really hard on this for a sustained period of time. honestly, we are elated. i've been getting messages from all corners of the earth today, my twitter is lit up the earth today, my twitter is lit up like a christmas tree. a bunch of people who have done sterling work on this have all been back in charge. i think football fans generally are really welcomed the news and could not be happier to hear it. ~ ., ., ,, ~' news and could not be happier to hear it. ~ ., ., i. ~ , hear it. what do you think this will do for the match _ hear it. what do you think this will do for the match day _ hear it. what do you think this will do for the match day experience? | do for the match day experience? when i said it was an outbreak of common sense, one of the big problems with football and go into the match at the minute is as we all know, people do stand and have been standing ever since taylor. and the problem with that is when clubs can't manage that process you end up particularly in a way and its people standing in the way of people who don't want to or can't themselves stand. that leads to all kinds of customer care issues. and some cases stops people the two older people are less able people from going to the game and it generates a bunch of problem thatjust needn't be there. it's just easy to handle withstanding areas at the back of the way ends or designated standing areas. first capitaljust overnight transform some spectators, some supporters use of the game. i think there is also about historically in there is also about historically in the 80s and 90s there was definitely the 80s and 90s there was definitely the sense that some people who rent the sense that some people who rent the game saw people who want to stand in for and saw troublemakers, hooligans and that wasn't the case at all. and i think we've come a long way. there were some things that the taylor report that absolutely right for them and going to football match is now in 2021 is a completely different experience. for me there's once and for all removes that link between footballers as troublemakers, footballers as troublemakers, footballers that should be treated in a particular way and people who want to stand or football. i feel if you treat people well, they act well. hopefully it's the final nail in the coffin for their old way of thinking. derby county have officially gone into administration. that has triggered a 12 point deduction dropping them to the bottom of the championship. the football league say they will work proactively with the administrators and all relevant
