It is good news for families, great news for business, an absolute boon for the Ariline Industry the transatlantic routes are some of the most lucrative. In recent Months, Passengers Number were 85 down on where they were Pre Pandemic. Im joined now by Gary Odonoghue in washingotn. Iam very i am very much looking forward to my invite. I am i am very much looking forward to my invite. Iam not i am very much looking forward to my invite. I am not the only one, because i have a statement from British Airways who say in the last few hours that has been a 700 jump in searches for holidays to key us destinations compared to this time last week. I destinations compared to this time last week. , ,. , last week. I am not surprised about that at all last week. I am not surprised about that at all. Obviously last week. I am not surprised about that at all. Obviously the last week. I am not surprised about that at all. Obviously the spare that at all. Obviously the spare room is made up for you, it is there waiting for you in washington, dc. I wrote a blog this morning saying with great prescience that this is an urgent but nothing much is going to happen on, because i think it came completely out of the blue. I got inundated with People telling me at their Heart Rending stories of not being able to reconnect with loved ones. A couple told me that their daughter is having Cancer Treatment in the us, she is having chemo, she is very poorly, but they cant get to her and she is too sick to travel. I think there is so many stories like that. I should go to one stack to give you a context of it. Give you one stack. Flight numbers for passengers travelling to the us and the uk or Vice Verse that was 86 down on Pre Pandemic levels. That is how much of a day and it will be to the airline industry. But it is also massive are People who have not been able to see Family Members for 18 Months. Members for 18 Months. Really ositive members for 18 Months. Really positive News Members for 18 Months. Really positive news for members for 18 Months. Really positive news for them. Members for 18 Months. Really positive news for them. Take i members for 18 Months. Really. Positive news for them. Take me members for 18 Months. Really positive news for them. Take me back to the time and think you are talking about. Youd i dont think anything would shift, i dont think Prime Ministerjohnson would think anything would shift, because he was telling People that his Washington Team would need time. Watch changed in the interim . In the interim . Other People who didnt expected in the interim . Other People who didnt expected to in the interim . Other People who didnt expected to shift in the interim . Other People who didnt expected to shift word in the interim . Other People who l didnt expected to shift word many People in the White House, many People in the White House, many People in the White House, many People in the biden administration. I think the biden administration suddenly well aware of the high levels of disaffection that were felt his european allies, and this was part of the pebble in the issue, if you like. Also, the french were absolutely seething about the australian submarine deal. Not only is borisjohnson going to meetjoe biden, but you have got other European Leaders coming to the us this week for the Un General Assembly. All of them were intending to raise this issue. Actually, he thought, i think, to raise this issue. Actually, he thought, ithink, if to raise this issue. Actually, he thought, i think, if we can get onto the subject of the Travel Ban then that makes life a bit easier. Just if you want evidence of how last minute this was and how it has got everybody by surprise, we have asked the White House what happens to People who have had the Astrazeneca Vaccine, or what happens to 1218 Astrazeneca Vaccine, or what happens to 12 18 Year Olds from britain who only receive a single jab and 30 People In America who receive life . The White House said that as a granular level of detail still to be worked out. Granular . I would say thatis worked out. Granular . I would say that is pretty fundamental to millions of People. That is pretty fundamental to millions of People. Pretty key, and the question millions of People. Pretty key, and the question we millions of People. Pretty key, and the question we will millions of People. Pretty key, and the question we will want millions of People. Pretty key, and| the question we will want answered on the site. Obviously, that is serious patching up to do with the french. The Eu Council President Tonight said there was a lack of loyalty from the united states. They are incandescent about what happened last week. I suppose in one sense this is a sort of sweetener before they get together for the Un General Assembly . Aha, they get together for the un general assembl . ,. ,. ,. , assembly . A very senior diplomat said to Me Assembly . A very senior diplomat said to me over assembly . A very senior diplomat said to me over this, assembly . A very senior diplomat said to me over this, the assembly . A very senior diplomat said to me over this, the french I Assembly . A very senior diplomat i said to me over this, the french are going to want some form of compensation for the slide, for the financial loss, for the economic damage. It may be that it was boris johnsons persuasive powers coming over the likely lifting of the Travel Ban. I also think you have to look at france and all of this, aware that there is fury. France is aware that there is fury. France is a medical s oldest ally. I think in a medical s oldest ally. I think in a series of missteps and miscalculations by the biden administration, that was a serious misjudgment of the french and lately would be on this, i totally underestimated the Fury And Resentment that they felt. More reaction on resentment that they felt. More reaction on that resentment that they felt. More reaction on that now. Resentment that they felt. More reaction on that now. Jon resentment that they felt. More J Reaction on that now. Jon sopel, really good see you. Here for more is the Eu Ambassador to the us, mr stravos lambrinidis. Let me start with some of those points raised Byjon Sopel there. I do know which vaccines are going to be acceptable to the united states and what level of testing will they want for passengers arriving at the airport . Will it be a Pcr Test or a lateral Flow Test . I airport . Will it be a Pcr Test or a lateral Flow Test . Airport . Will it be a Pcr Test or a lateral Flow Test . I dont know more than the white lateral Flow Test . I dont know more than the White House lateral Flow Test . I dont know more than the White House knows lateral Flow Test . I dont know more than the White House knows at lateral Flow Test . I dont know more than the White House knows at the | than the White House knows at the state than the White House knows at the state on than the White House knows at the state on this topic, but i know they are very state on this topic, but i know they are very focused on resolving these Obvious are very focused on resolving these Obvious questions in the next month until the Obvious questions in the next month until the Travel Ban gets lifted in early until the Travel Ban gets lifted in early november. 30 until the Travel Ban gets lifted in early november. Early november. So you will be aushin early november. So you will be pushing for early november. So you will be pushing for some early november. So you will be pushing for some acknowledgement that, for instance, the Astrazeneca Vaccine should be accepted . We know astrazeneca is not given to People In America. Astrazeneca is not given to People In America In America. Yes, this is something that they also In America. Yes, this is something that they also have In America. Yes, this is something that they also have to In America. Yes, this is something that they also have to resolve In America. Yes, this is something that they also have to resolve with their own that they also have to resolve with their own cdc. But The Big Picture is that their own cdc. But The Big Picture is that we their own cdc. But The Big Picture is that we did manage after a very extensive is that we did manage after a very extensive and very coordinated pressure extensive and very coordinated Pressure Campaign and a Persuasion Campaign Pressure Campaign and a Persuasion Campaign to change the position of the administration on the Travel Ban the administration on the Travel Ban i the administration on the Travel Ban i am the administration on the Travel Ban. I am very pleased we did this because, ban. I am very pleased we did this because, in ban. I am very pleased we did this because, in fact, the administration has said because, in fact, the administration has said for because, in fact, the administration has said for a long time that this is the has said for a long time that this is the pandemic of the unvaccinated, and we is the pandemic of the unvaccinated, and we fully is the pandemic of the unvaccinated, and we fully agree. We have proven this in and we fully agree. We have proven this in europe by allowing Vaccinated Americans to come and Visit Europe for Months now. I think if it became Visit Europe for Months now. I think if it became increasingly untenable in the if it became increasingly untenable in the us if it became increasingly untenable in the us context to be able to justify in the us context to be able to justify banning hundreds of millions of europeans, businessPeople, famiiies of europeans, businessPeople, families from coming this country. If families from coming this country. If you families from coming this country. If you look families from coming this country. If you look at the way that the european if you look at the way that the European Ambassadors approach this in the European Ambassadors approach this in the last European Ambassadors approach this in the last few weeks, youll see that the in the last few weeks, youll see that the pressure increased quite dramatically, certainly from brussels, the constant contact on this issue brussels, the constant contact on this issue at all different levels ploughed a difference as well. I think ploughed a difference as well. I think that. As far as i am concerned. Think that. As far as i am concerned, i have to tell you, i am not that concerned, i have to tell you, i am not that surprised that the Travel Ban has not that surprised that the Travel Ban has been lifted, because i know from the ban has been lifted, because i know from the work we have done in the past weeks. From the work we have done in the past weeks, a lot of it behind the headlines, past weeks, a lot of it behind the headlines, that the administration was thinking very seriously about how to was thinking very seriously about how to resolve this issue. Just was thinking very seriously about how to resolve this issue. How to resolve this issue. Just to net an how to resolve this issue. Just to get an idea how to resolve this issue. Just to get an idea from you on the how to resolve this issue. Just to l get an idea from you on the detail. There are some things that are going to consent People as they start to look at booking holidays, looking at business travel. Obviously, the testing, what will you be lobbying for on a testing . Obvious way for some children in some countries in europe are already getting one jab. The type ofjobs they are going to accept. Are you now going to be making a powerful case to the White House on what you want from the restrictions being eased . Restrictions being eased . Absolutely, restrictions being eased . Absolutely, they have to make up their minds on what they want for safe requirements for travel to the us. Safe requirements for travel to the us we safe requirements for travel to the us. We will argue what we will consider us. We will argue what we will consider to be safe based on the scientific consider to be safe based on the scientific evidence that we have. On terms scientific evidence that we have. On terms of scientific evidence that we have. On terms of the actual testing, i do not expect terms of the actual testing, i do not expect it to be much different from not expect it to be much different from what not expect it to be much different from what we have today. Today the us requires from what we have today. Today the us requires pre Flight Testing for europeans and others who come to the us, and europeans and others who come to the us, and they europeans and others who come to the us, and they allow though for the longer us, and they allow though for the longer test and for the rapid test, so long longer test and for the rapid test, so long as longer test and for the rapid test, so long as they are both molecular. Have you expressed yourself, as the ambassador for the have you expressed yourself, as the ambassadorfor the eu in washington, your angerfor what ambassadorfor the eu in washington, your anger for what unfolded . The eu, as you know, has a very large presence in the you know, has a very large presence in the indo pacific and its Member States in the indo pacific and its Member States as in the indo pacific and its Member States as well. So it goes without saying states as well. So it goes without saying that ensuring that coordination was something that was not effectively achieved in the past few days not effectively achieved in the past few days with recent developments, and they few days with recent developments, and they will have to be some very strong and they will have to be some very strong indication of how it is we can get strong indication of how it is we can get back to the point of collectively protecting our interests. Emmanuel macron thinks of the time is right not to start talking about a European Defence Pact And Europe taking care of his own defence strategy. There has been a lot Written In The American Press Today about the damage that has been done through the afghanistan saga, and through this to the nato alliance. Ambassador, thank you very well. Ambassador, thank you very much borisjohnson was in new York Today to co chair a climate Change Meeting at the Un General Assembly. He is there to do some of the Arm Twisting ahead of cop 26, that crucial un climate Change Conference the uk will be hosting in glasgow in november. And at The End of it all, he seemed pretty fed up with some of the hollow commitments hes getting from other World Leaders. Specifically the shortfall in funding. In paris, six years ago, the developed nations pledged to raise 100 Billion a year to help developing countries reduce their emissions. Last week, the 0ecd reported they are still 20 Billion short. And today the leaders of the worlds top three polluters china, the united states and india did not even attend the meeting. The greatest shortfall in funding comes from the us. The challenge is immense. Globally, emissions need to be reduced by 45 by 2030. But a new assessment from the United Nations out last week suggests not only are we not on course to meet that, but in fact emissions are set to rise by 16 during this period. Im joined now by david waskow, director of the international climate initiative at world resources institute. I suppose you could split this argument into two related issues. One is emissions, and at the other is this funding issue. The prime Minister Today are not mincing his words. What you make of that . Well. Words. What you make of that . Well, i think words. What you make of that . Well, i think youre words. What you make of that . Well, i think youre absolutely words. What you make of that . Ii i think youre absolutely right that there is a two Part Issue here. The Emissions Side of the puzzle, we are clearly not on track in terms of Cutting Emissions to the degree that we need to to avoid catastrophic Climate Change. When you look at the country is out there, there are a number of major emitters that still need to go further and bring strong targets for 2030, and also commit to net zero emissions around the middle of the century. One country that really does stand out in that regard and we havent seen a new commitment from 42030 is china. They represent about a quarter of the worlds emissions. China on the Emissions Side of the story is critical. The other part of the puzzle is the finance side. Here it is really criticalfor finance side. Here it is really critical for the finance side. Here it is really criticalfor the us to make it. That is at the other part that needs to come together. That 100 Billion a Year And Finance that you mentioned is key, in part for political reasons was that it is a commitment that developed countries made over a decade ago that they would reach by 2020. But it is also very practical and insignificance, it is the finance that will allow countries on the ground to take action to reduce their emissions, to Cleaner Energy and to protect employers. But it is also the finance that will allow them to protect themselves from the impacts of Climate Change, to adapt and build resilience. That finance came from a number of leaders of vulnerable developing countries. They showed up. Even at major leaders does not, the leaders of these countries did, island states. We are hearing from them that we have to have this question of finance clued up by the time we had at cop26 in glasgow. I finance clued up by the time we had At Com in glasgow. At cop26 in glasgow. I think the Prime Minister at cop26 in glasgow. I think the Prime Minister probably at cop26 in glasgow. I think the Prime Minister probably echoed | At Com in glasgow. | think the | Prime Minister probably echoed a At Com in glasgow. | think the Prime Minister probably echoed a lot of the frustration of People Around The World today. He said everybody knows around a table and agrees something must be done, and then nothing happens. You dont even get India And China to the table today. Alok sharma, the president of cop26, running the show here in november, says he has not yet got a full commitment from Xi Jinping that he will come here. She does not know evenif will come here. She does not know even if the chinese president will turn up. Even if the chinese president will turn u. ,. , even if the chinese president will turnu. ,. , ~. , ~ turn up. He does not know. We have seen turn up. He does not know. We have seen a turn up. He does not know. We have seen a lot turn up. He does not know. We have seen a lot of turn up. He does not know. We have seen a lot of headway turn up. He does not know. We have seen a lot of headway of turn up. He does not know. We have seen a lot of headway of the | have seen a lot of headway of the last year, countries have come forward to a stronger emission targets. That has meaning the case the uk. Then the us, japan, canada. But we are seen as other actors missing in action. We have also seen some movement formed on the finance side. Some European Countries have come forward. But we are seeing the us not doing what it needs to do, lagging far behind when you compare it to its appear countries among the developing countries. I5 it to its appear countries among the developing countries. Developing countries. Is that because there developing countries. Is that because there is developing countries. Is that because there is a developing countries. Is that because there is a problem i developing countries. Is that because there is a problem getting some of the funding that they would like to commit through congress . There is always a question with congress and making that happen, getting that to happen. But at The End of the day, what an administration puts on the table and what it asks for and what it pledges internationally is critical to being able to move that money in congress. So i think the administration does have some leathers. John kerry has been publicly very clear in the last couple of Months that he is hearing from other countries that the us needs to do more on this financing. So hopefully those messages from other countries are being held at the highest level at the White House. You just touch that will happen in the last several days of the Travel Policy and the responsiveness that the us had. We had last week the head of the European Commission very clearly repeating the Eu Message calling at the us on climate finance. Hopefully that message is being heeded at the highest level in the White House. Six. Heeded at the highest level in the White House heeded at the highest level in the White House. Six weeks to go. We will see. Stay with us on Bbc News still to come for the second time in as many years canadians are voting for a new government. Well have the latest. The prime Ministerjustin Trudeau called the Snap Election last month, seeking to capitalise on public approval for his handling of the Covid 19 pandemic. But the latest Opinion Poll points to an extremely tight race, with Mr Trudeau now virtually Neck And Neck with his conservative rival, erin otoole. The bbc s Samira Hussain is in montreal. Canadas Prime Minister, justin trudeau, has said he called this election because the pandemic changed the country, and that canadians should have a say in what happens to canada going forward. The opposition, however, says that this is actually nothing more than an expensive political ploy by Mr Trudeau to try and get a firmer hold on power and gain a majority in parliament. And the Voting Public . Well, theyre just suffering from election fatigue. Remember, this is the second time canadians are going to the polls in less then two years. The first was mandated by law, but this election is really aboutjustin trudeau trying to gain this big majority. But if you look at the polling, he is now in a statistical tie with his main opposition rival, which means that this political gamble may actually backfire may actually backfire and he could even lose his seat as Prime Minister. We saw some pretty decent weather across the country today. A lot of Sunshine Around, it felt quite warm again, too. And in fact, for much of this upcoming week, itll be dry with a lot of sunshine and feel quite warm, particularly across the south of the uk, because towards The End of the week, its northern parts of the uk, particularly scotland, which will turn windier and cooler, more autumnal with outbreaks of rain. So, weve had these Weather Fronts bringing more Cloud Today across scotland and Northern Ireland, and one across East Anglia and the south east. They will tend to fizzle out overnight, leaving some patchy cloud around, but lengthy, clear skies, and winds for most across the North West of scotland will be light. So, Itll Turn quite chilly out of town, but where you have The Cloud, just about into double figures. And well see a little bit of Mist And Fog developing here and there. So, for tuesday, weve got High Pressure really dominating the scene across much of the country, this deep area of low pressure passing well to the north of the uk. Will introduce stronger winds though to the North And West of scotland, so here Itll Turn breezy in the day with variable amounts of cloud. But elsewhere, after a cool start with early Mist And Fog, its a lovely day, lots of Sunshine Around. 20 degrees in aberdeen, we could see 21 22 in central and southern england, perhaps south wales, as well. Now, as we move out of tuesday into wednesday, this is where we start to see some changes across the north of the uk. That deep low and its Weather Front begin to impact much of scotland and Northern Ireland, as well, so a band of Heavy Rain will spread south eastwards, Turning Windier and, behind it, we could see a swathe of gales across northern scotland in particular. But this band of rain will be weakening as it sinks southwards. It doesnt really reach england and wales throughout wednesday, so here, anotherfine day, lighter winds, some sunshine, quite warm, highs of 22 celsius. Wednesday into thursday, we see potential of another area of low pressure developing to the north of the uk. That could bring another swathe of wet and windy weather to scotland, gales across the far North East there. Quite breezy for Northern England, Northern Ireland, variable cloud, but actually a good deal of sunshine again, particularly into the afternoon where we could see temperatures touching 21 degrees. So, pleasantly warm here, but noticeably cooler in the north 10 16 degrees. Add on the wind, itll feel much cooler than that, very autumnal. It stays fine across southern parts for friday and into the start of the weekend. Temperatures begin to recover across the north, as well. What has gone wrong with Production Equipment essentially what we have is during the pandemic, demand was down and producers cut production to comply with what they saw was demand. . , comply with what they saw was demand. . ,. , demand. But demand this summer has really roared demand. But demand this summer has really roared back demand. But demand this summer has really roared back at demand. But demand this summer has really roared back at levels demand. But demand this summer has really roared back at levels that really roared back at levels that are normally seen in the Winter And Producersjust are not are normally seen in the winter and producers just are not able to come back to that and produce up to those levels. So in the us part of the issueis levels. So in the us part of the issue is that a lot of natural Gas Production is actually associated with Oil Production and Oil Production has gone down. And even the prices are ripe for profitability, the net production just has not come back yet. And in europe what we are seeing is a lot of producers have not wrapped back up of producers have not wrapped back up but also there is an issue with the russia and gas,. They are conducting some maintenance to their facilities and they are also putting gas into Storage Caverns for the winter and so they are not able to supply enough to meet your s current demand. I supply enough to meet yours current demand. ,. , ,. , supply enough to meet yours current demand. ,. ,. ,. , supply enough to meet yours current demand. ,. ,. ,. , demand. I want to come back to that and a second demand. I want to come back to that and a second but demand. I want to come back to that and a second but i demand. I want to come back to that and a second but i would demand. I want to come back to that and a second but i would think demand. I want to come back to that and a second but i would think aboutj and a second but i would think about production there In America because as you say, during the last 18 Months, supply has been cut but they would have seen over the last couple of Months that was picking up quite quickly and then you get Hurricane Ida coming to the Gulf Of Mexico. It is actually quite literally the perfect storm. Is actually quite literally the perfect storm. Is actually quite literally the erfect storm. ,. ,. , perfect storm. Yes, Hurricane Ida definitely has perfect storm. Yes, Hurricane Ida definitely has done perfect storm. Yes, Hurricane Ida definitely has done a perfect storm. Yes, Hurricane Ida definitely has done a number perfect storm. Yes, Hurricane Ida definitely has done a number on | perfect storm. Yes, Hurricane Ida i definitely has done a number on the Oil And Gas production in the Gulf Of Mexico specifically and that is the Off Production and finallyjust this week we have seen Oil Production return almost normal and still natural Gas Production is a bit below normal but thats really not the only issue because the stores of Natural Gas were low even before Hurricane Ida. So Hurricane Ida definitely it is made of the problem that has been building. Let me talk about russia because the us has been leading quite heavily on the eu countries in recent time about North Stream to come of this Gas Pipeline thAt Comes across the Baltic Sea and they have been trying to say to the europeans you can buy your gas from us can we dont need to go cap in hand of the russians, and yet here we are in a crisis and returned to america and say thAt Comes across the Baltic Sea and they have been trying to say to the europeans you can buy your gas for us, you dont need to go cabin handed the russians, and yet here we are in a crisis and returned to America Insight now and in the gas and its not there. Does that undermine The American argument . I dont know if it undermines The American argument because there is definitely a risk still existing for relying so much on russia and Natural Gas and you are seeing this play out right now where russia just either is not able or does not want to supply what europe is demanding. And so even when North Stream to does open, there will still be that risk. The issue of course is that the alternative is that you have to import Natural Gas and liquefied form from the us, which is definitely more expensive and takes longer, but there are ways to get around that by having long term contracts like the one that the us helped negotiate with poland. So instead of having to buy Spot Cargoes in the event of a supply crunch, there are ways to help alleviate the reliance on russia. Yes, is a bit more expensive it does require these kind of long term contracts. Tote require these kind of longterm contracts. ~. , ~ require these kind of longterm contracts. ~. ~. ,. , contracts. We talked about climate chan. E contracts. We talked about Climate Change and contracts. We talked about Climate Change and the contracts. We talked about Climate Change and the company contracts. We talked about Climate Change and the company since change and the company since conference coming up to six weeks time and of course the World Leaders will be there saying we need to cut Coal Production and we need to cut the burning of Gas And Oil and fossil fuels, the burning of Gas And Oil and fossilfuels, and yet the burning of Gas And Oil and fossil fuels, and yet when gas runs out, renewables dont seem to fill the gap. Thats a major problem. Is there no way that we can sort of solve the problem with that solar and Wind Power . Part solve the problem with that solar and Wind Power . Solve the problem with that solar and Wind Power . Part of the issue is that solar and and Wind Power . Part of the issue is that solar and wind and Wind Power . Part of the issue is that solar and Wind Power and Wind Power . Part of the issue is that solar and Wind Power are that solar and Wind Power are intermittent and we dont have good Storage Technology at this point thats on par with what we can get from Nuclear Orfrom thats on par with what we can get from nuclear or from fossil fuel. Thats on par with what we can get from Nuclear Orfrom fossilfuel. So part of the issue in england at least was that the wind was not blowing as much. Normally in expense to get about a quarter of a selector to get about a quarter of a selector to be from wind and it was only getting about 11 . Thats a huge drop and you have to make that up somewhere and the place to turn for the stable source are coal and gas, especially when you were also at the same time cutting back on nuclear power. So the fact is that you can build as many windows as you possibly can but you cannot guarantee that the wind will blow. So these renewable sources like solar and wind are not good Baseload Supplies. The couple had been touring in a Ford Transit Van they had converted into a mobile home. He has not been charged yet with any crime. The Couples Story is making Headline News on both sides of the atlantic largely because millions of People have been dragged into an extraordinary online investigation involving the reddit community. The Gabby Petito hashtag has been viewed 350 Million times. For more on the impact this story has had online, im joined now by david zurawik, professor of Media Studies at Goucher College in baltimore. It isa it is a really peculiar one because People go missing all the time and some People go missing and are found dead and had been murdered. Why is this particular Story Heating headlines on both sides of the atlantic . I headlines on both sides of the atlantic . ~. ,. ,. , atlantic . I think one of the reasons is the social atlantic . I think one of the reasons is the social Media Atlantic . I think one of the reasons is the social Media Force Atlantic . I think one of the reasons is the social Media Force behind atlantic . I think one of the reasons is the social Media Force behind it. | is the social Media Force behind it. These two People lived out these adventures, this cross country trip, on Social Media with youtube and other instagram and they chronicled their trip that way. So, in a way, they were part of and presented their reality or they presented the reality they wanted People to think of. That is of the relationship on Social Media. So i think it is kind of natural in a way that People would respond via Social Media to what is happening. Also it is their Age Group, with People at 22 and 23, thats exactly the Bulls Eye of People who live their lives in Social Media to that extent. So i think there is more of a social Media Texture to this than there might be for folks who were older and People who did not display or present themselves and present a reality of themselves on Social Media. I think that is one reason. This is not in a way, if you think back to 2014, we had a huge cultural phenomenon here with the podcast called serial that National Public Radio presented about a murder here in Baltimore County of a high school senior. And the subsequent conviction of a former boyfriend in the case. People went online and tried to argue the case and find new clues and go back through court records. It became a social Media Phenomenon in much the same way. The difference here is that up until yesterday and today, it was a real time event. People were on Tick Tock presenting video of someone they picked up who they said was the fiance in the park. So there was a kind of real time policing going on. I have not seen that before. I sort of not i have not seen that before. I sort of got dragged i have not seen that before. I sort of got dragged into i have not seen that before. I sort of got dragged into this i have not seen that before. I sort of got dragged into this last i have not seen that before. I sort of got dragged into this last night. I dont go looking for the sort of thing but suddenly last night im watching this couple who are driving through a park in wyoming and they are driving up the road and they are taking me on the journey to where they had spotted this man. And i sort of got hooked into it, and i was watching it unfold because i wanted to see where the White Van was and what might happen to the scene and they slowed it down. And it was sort of like a real time investigation on Social Media. This is what People are watching. And at The End of it, i felt a is what People are watching. And at The End of it, ifelt a bit uncomfortable about it actually because there is a dead girl at the heart of this, a girl who has been murdered, and yet is also a almost as become entertainment. Thats exactly the warning and the cabbie out and the feeling uncomfortable about it i think is a healthy response to this because one of the things about this series of events is that i think many People, and im notjudging, Buti Events is that i think many People, and im notjudging, but i think People participated in it because of the way they have been acculturated or socialised to use Social Media almost as not a Video Game but as a Reality Sort of True Crime dock you series which are hugely popular here and i know they are also popular in the uk. And this played out that way. I think when you saw that van going into the park and all of that, it was a good director and how he would take you into that story and get you engaged in it. So we are prepped and await by our Television Viewing habits and by the way, you know, netflix and these streaming services have made huge profits off of True Crime documentaries series, which are i think of documentary as a serious Nonfiction Programming with a sense of social conscience and socialjustice. Thats often not what these True Crime Dock Series are about. Its more about sort of titillation and and entertainment. Its an Entertainment Genre thats very popular. This real story had those elements, and so i think thats another that 70 People became engaged in it. I think it is something that is what you think about and even kind of wonder about culturally what happens to us when this and what is happening to us when this becomes an Entertainment Phenomenon for us. Again, a young woman is dead, exactly as you said it, as a journalist these things went off in your head and said wait a minute, im watching this this way but he a woman is dead. Is that an appropriate response with my i dont think many People in the Entertainment Audience responded to it that way, just only as entertainment. Its been four weeks since the World Bank suspended financial support to the Countrys Health Sector in response to the talibans takeover. But first, Jeremy Bowen has more on the daily hardship for ordinary aghans. The struggle to live, to eat, to survive did not end when the shooting stopped. At first light, hundreds of building workers looking for a Days Employment gather at a Market Place in the centre of kabul. With their tools and without much hope. Afghanistans economy is closing down. Millions live in poverty in a country that has received huge sums in foreign aid. These Men Rage about the fortunes stolen by a corrupt elite in the last 20 years. Food prices are rocketing. Millions barely feed their families. Hunger could become the worst of afghanistans many crises. 9 Billion that might help them was frozen by The Americans to keep it away from the taliban. In the name of allah, we call on america that they must give the money in the budget that they have directed from afghanistan, they must recognise our new government. Afghanistan. Malnutrition is a chronic problem in afghanistan. Only patients with other severe complications, like three year old mohammed, have a chance of a bed at kabul childrens hospital. But more patients are arriving. The doctors said that was because the World Bank stopped Funding Village Clinics after the taliban victory. Life was never easy in afghanistan. Seven month old mohammed is his mothers fourth living child. Six others died at birth. Like all the other women in the corridor, she wanted to hide her identity. Not a new thing in afghanistan but under the taliban everyone is more cautious. Taliban fighters are highly visible in kabul. Some here say security is much better now the fighting is over. For many, its quiet built on fear. Countries that want to help afghans, but detest the taliban and all that they stand for are in a bind. For People to earn money, to buy food, to look after theirfamilies, the taliban needs to preside over a viable state. Now, for The Americans, the british, nor the other countries that fought the taliban for so many years, that might be just too much, especially if the taliban can then claim another victory. A community high above the city carries the scars of 40 years of war. So do the families who live here. This family is leaving for pakistan. The mother, the only bread winner, taught male students. The taliban stopped herjob and her younger daughters education. Theyve sold their possessions. Leaving is still hard. Their dreams were always fragile in a state riddled with corruption, which couldnt survive the departure of its foreign backers. Afghanistans newest crisis is about fundamentals of life food, Security And Hope and the Despair And Anger when theyve gone. Jeremy bowen, Bbc News, kabul. The Roll Out of covid vaccines to healthy 12 15 Year Olds has started today in england and scotland. Invitations are being sent out in wales this week, while in Northern Ireland, the vaccinations are likely to be offered from october. It is part of the drive to get more People protected ahead of winter. Booster shots are also being offered to over 50s, vulnerable People and health and social care workers. Our Health Correspondent Dominic Hughes has the latest. Not the usual start to the School Week for 14 year old jack, a pupil at Belfair Academy in essex. Hes one of the first healthy 12 15 Year Olds in england to receive the vaccine as part of the latest Roll Out. Im happy ive got It Cos it makes it easier to go out and enjoy myself now. Schools do need to get permission from parents or guardians, but if thats withheld and the child is judged to be competent to reach a decision, they could give consent. The judgment on vaccinating this younger Age Group was finely balanced and was made only after factors like the disruption to education were taken into account. Its really important to remember that the uk chief medical officers have supported the introduction of the vaccine to this Age Group and thats then been signed off by government. And were doing it, were rolling it out in schools, because it is our best chance not just to protect children, but to protect families as well. Vaccinations for young People are also under way at Drop In Centres in scotland and will start early next month in wales and Northern Ireland. We want to make sure every single 12 15 Year Old is protected, and not only protected l for themselves, but also as they go into school, it helps to protect, hopefully, their teachers and others that they interact with at school, too. Do you want to roll up your sleeve for me . For Health And Care workers, vulnerable People and the over 50s, the Boosterjab Programme is also now up and running, ensuring as many of us as possible have some Vaccine Protection ahead of what could be a challenging winter. Dominic hughes, Bbc News. Thousands of People have been evacuated after a volcano erupted in the Spanish Canary islands. Thered been a week long Build Up of seismic activity before the Volcano Cumbre Vieja finally erupted. The images taken early this morning are pretty dramatic. You will see the lava pouring downhill towards the sea burning everything in its path. This particular volcano has been dormant for 50 years. La palma is not one of the more popular Tourist Destinations in the canaries, but it has a population of around 85,000 People, and it is one of eight Volcanic Islands in the archipelago, which is just off africas western coast. Together, the Islands Host about 13 Million tourists a year. Roughly 500 of them are being evacuated after this eruption, but the Spanish Tourism minister Reyes Maroto says the island is still open and is inviting People to watch the eruption, which i imagine is quite a draw. A lot of tourists do make trips up Mount Teidi in tenerife, which is also an active volcano. Im joined now by cecilia reed, a Volcano Expert and fellow at the Royal Geographical Society in london. The Cumbre Vieja volcanic structure, is activity occurs every 75 years on and off shore, which is heavily monitored. If youre watching here in the uk, the ten Oclock News is coming up around the corner and if youre watching a Bbc World News, laura is he will Bbc World News america. Stay with us for that, same time tomorrow. Hello. Weather wise, were gently being led into autumn through this week. Some early morning Mist And Fog perhaps one of the first signs that Obviously autumn is now closing in. But by day, there will still be some decent warm sunshine, and were not anticipating any big shocks in our weather, no plunges in Temperature Or Anything very wet and windy. We sit to the south of the Jet Stream in relatively mild air thats been fed up from the south west, from the atlantic. The Jet Stream strong to the north of us, guiding areas of low pressure a fair way shy of the north of the uk. At least that will be the case for tuesday. A little bit of cloud possible in the east on the Tail End of a Weather Front first thing, some early morning Mist And Fog. Some thicker cloud for the North West of scotland through the afternoon, perhaps bringing a Little Light Rain to the coast eventually. Some stronger winds here, too. But overall, if anything, more Sunshine Around for tuesday than we saw on monday and decent temperatures, 19 21, a little above average for the time of year. Well see The Cloud spilling its way further south across the northern half of the uk into the smaller hours of wednesday. Double figures for our overnight lows. And this Weather Front does make its way into the north of the uk through wednesday. This is probably our most potent Weather Feature for this week. It will drop some heavier rain across the North West of scotland early in the day. The front weakens as it slides south as the hours go by. By the time we get it into Northern England and Northern Ireland through the afternoon, the rain should become somewhat lighter. Quite windy, though, to the north of the front. Still sunny and warm to the south. Wednesday is the equinox, Equi Meaning equal, equal day, equal night in this case, and it is the astronomical start of autumn. And for thursday, well, we do have a little bit more action out of an area of low pressure to the far north of the uk to go along with that theme, if you like. Stronger winds across Western Scotland for a while, perhaps a little bit more persistent rain arriving here, and it will be a Shade Cooler than it has been to start the week. But still a lot of warm Sunshine Clinging on to the south of the uk. And if anything, were going to see that finer weather pushing further north through friday into the weekend and low pressure areas receding as once again we see the Jet Stream just bumping a little bit further north. Friday, breezy across the North West of the uk. Yes, some isolated showers, but still some very healthy temperatures actually for the time of year, both by day and indeed overnight. Highs of 19 21 on friday. For saturday, at the moment, it looks like well see a Ridge Of High Pressure building, and that will stick around, i think, through the weekend as the forecast has it at the moment. So, there should be a lot of fine weather for the weekend. Perhaps a few showers working their way in to some of our Irish Sea coasts. But thats quite a change in tack to our forecast as we had it a couple of days ago, where it looked like wed see those frontal Weather Ssystem piling in from the North West through friday and saturday. Now the prospects look a good deal quieter. Right the way until the second half of the weekend, staying in the warmer air. Sunday into monday, though, the jet now looks like it will make its way southwards across the uk. Cooler air, we lose the amber colours, into the yellows, even the blues early next week. And a big transition in the way things will look, as well, because with thatjet to the south, it allows low pressure to come sweeping right the way across the uk. So, early next week, be prepared for spells of much wetter weather and some stronger winds, too. And certainly, i think, a really notable change will be just how much cooler its going to feel in contrast to the temperatures weve been enjoying in the last few days. A massive rise in the cost of gas paid by Energy Firms brings fears of a Winter Crisis but ministers offer reassurance.
