Investments. Conference, this is a radical and ambitious agenda, where we renew the contract between government and the people, Ticket People that the deal they deserve. People, Ticket People that the deal they deserve they deserve. There is one reform Liberal Democrats they deserve. There is one reform Liberal Democrats and they deserve. There is one reform Liberal Democrats and is they deserve. There is one reform Liberal Democrats and is crucial i they deserve. There is one reform | Liberal Democrats and is crucial so government stop taking people for granted and people get the deal, that the deal that they deserve stop reforming politics itself. To put power where it belongs in the hands of individuals and their communities. The first means resisting borisjohnson s authoritarian power grabs. Stop him from making it harderfor people authoritarian power grabs. Stop him from making it harder for people to vote. Defend rights to challenge government in the court on the street and protecting the human Rights Act itself. Applause but we have to go much further than just preventing the tory damage. We need to strengthen our democracy, so everyones voices are heard. Shifting more power out of westminster so local decisions are made by and for the people they affect. A new kind of Community Politics that truly engages people who are too often left out. And a fair Electoral System so everyones Vote Count equally. Applause that is what a fair deal looks like. Conference, we can give people this fair deal. We can renew the contract between government and the people and we can deliver a zero carbon economy. Liberal democrats can be the party of education, of caring and business. I know we can do it. Ill liberal Democrat Brett has already. Government u turns on everything from planning to id cards, so lets keep fighting for parents, for parents and for small businesses. For carers. And when you are knocking on those doors, and speaking to your neighbours, when they ask you what we stand for, tell them this. Liberal democrats stand for a fair deal to be delivered by politicians who are decent and who truly care about you. A fair deal that puts power in your hand so you can do your bit and holds the powerful to account to make sure they did as. A fair deal for parents and children, carers and their loved ones, a fair dealfor nurses, teachers, doctors and police, a fair dealfor teachers, doctors and police, a fair deal for businesses, workers and the Self Employed and a fair deal on climate. Applause but standing between the british people and our fair Deal But Standing between the british people and Ourfair Deal is Big Blue wall. In Chesham And Amersham we knocked out one blue brick. Now it is up to us to tear it down stop from cheadle to cheltenham, from winchester to woking, from stockport to saturn, from hitching To Harrogate Met westminster To Wimbledon and from eastbourne to esher and walton, let us bring the blue wool down, let us rebuild our country, fight for a fair deal, we can do it and we will. Blue wall. Applause that was Ed Davey giving the Keynote Speech at the annual Party Conference taking place in the city of london. Our political corresponent, Nick Eardley is with me. There was a lot in it. A lot of policy covered. It was in part taking a chance to set out a fairly broad vision for what he thinks of the country and some of it was more rhetorical and based on policies. There are two things in particular that the Liberal Democrats would be quite keen to take away. One is the plan Ed Davey has to make the party relevant again electorally, remember they only 12 mps at the moment and has struggled since the coalition. They want to take on conservatives in safe Conservative Seat square places like the South Of England where historically the tories have done really well but where the lib dems are bit fed up, they think the votes are taken dems are bit fed up, they think the votes are Ta Ken for dems are bit fed up, they think the votes are taken for granted. The lib dems never tire of talking about Chesham And Amersham. We can offer something the conservatives cannot. Borisjohnson takes them for granted. They are up for grabs. There was a policy on education as well. One thing the lib dems often talk about is putting power into peoples and. Got the sense that with talk about £15 million for education in england, 5 Billion of which they wanted to be vouchers to go to parents. £200 for each child would have a choice for what they go on, be It Tutoring after the sports clubs, Music Lessons when you name it. We got an idea of some of what Ed Davey thinks will get his party back into a more relevant position in british politics. Two things that will be tough for him. One is he is starting from a pretty low point. We have seen a few elections now where the lib dems have struggled to make any significant gains and secondly, i suspect monet will be some who point out he was a minister in the coalition. There will be sam. Although there was anti conservative rhetoric in their eddie clearly wants to take on the tories in their own backyard, im sure there will be some in other parties who will say you were a minister with the conservatives for five years. Thank ou ve conservatives for five years. Thank you very much you are watching bbc news. One of englands greatest and best known footballers, jimmy greaves, has died at the age of 81. A Government Minister has said there will be no threat to Gas Supplies in the uk this winter. Alok sharma told the bbc s Andrew Marr show that householders would be protected from spiralling wholesale prices. It comes as the government continues talks with the Energy Sector following a sharp rise in the wholesale gas price. Heres our Business Correspondent Katie austin. The price of Natural Gas a key source of the energy which heats our homes and powers our industries has rocketed. One immediate impact is that some smaller Energy Suppliers have gone bust and more could follow. Large, prudently run companies like octopus you know, we bought our energy long in advance so i think the real problem is for those companies which are smaller, maybe less prudently run, who are buying their energy now, and of course theyre facing these unprecedentedly high prices. The Business Secretary has met Energy Companies this weekend and held a further meeting with the Regulator Ofgem this morning. Another minister said people shouldnt be concerned about any risk to supply. A significant part of our Gas Supplies comes domestically. The imported gas primarily comes from countries like norway, so we are secure in that but, of course, when it comes to prices there will be concern, as well, but we have the energy price cap, we have the warm home discount, to protect people at this particular time. But the Knock On Effect of the price rises are causing concern for the Food And Drink sector. Production at two large fertiliser plants has been halted, and they are major sources of carbon dioxide. Its uses include in slaughterhouses and in meat packaging. Some Poultry Processors have just a few days worth in stock. The Trade Body which represents major supermarkets says if the problem is not resolved, shoppers will see the impact. Carbon dioxide is used extensively across the Supply Chain Everything from producing pork and chicken, that we see on the shelves, right through to extending the life of salad leaves, for example, in packaging, or Soft Drinks or beer. What well probably see is a bit less availability in choice than we would have seen of some of the more popular products unless this is resolved quickly. The government is in contact with the company behind those fertiliser plants, and is looking at alternative sources of carbon dioxide. In the long run, the increase in wholesale Gas Prices is likely to eventually mean higher bills for consumers. Katy austin, bbc news.
