After killing ten innocent People, including children, in a Drone Strike during their final days in afghanistan. Strictly S Back but theres controversy as reports suggests that two of the show s professional dancers are refusing to get covid jabs. And coming up in half an hour as part of the bbc s 100 women season, Zeinab Badawi speaks to supermodel naomi campbell, in an exclusive interview for hardtalk. Good afternoon. The government is holding urgent talks with the Energy Industry about a sharp increase in wholesale Gas Prices, which have risen to record levels. There are warnings that the increase will raise Consumer Energy costs and other prices its already affecting Food Production and agriculture. The rising cost of wholesale Gas Prices is being driven by several factors including strong global demand. Our Business Correspondent Katy austin has more. Gas is a key source of the energy that helps to heat our homes and power our industries. But reasons including high demand and lower solar and Wind Output have seen wholesale prices soar, almost doubling since the start of this year. It is an unprecedented situation according to Energy Market analysts. Gas prices around the world in Asia And Europe are at record highs. In europe, there is a big supply squeeze. What is happening here in great britain is not unique. The high prices have already led two large Uk Fertiliser plants to close. One consequence of that is a nationwide shortage of Carbon Dioxide. That is the gas used to stun some animals before slaughtering and in the meat packaging process. One Trade Body said this would cause huge problems because it is so widely used. It is used to extend the Shelf Life of Packaging Notjust in meat, but all foods. And at a time when we are struggling because of the Haulage Shortages in this country to keep the Supply Chain running, to have a shortage of Shelf Life on the products going onto shelves is going to cause even more disruption so this is a really serious problem for us. Online Food Delivery Company ocado has confirmed it has limited stock of some frozen foods because the squeeze on c02 means it cant get enough dry ice. The Trade Body which represents major supermarkets said the Disruption Couldnt have come at a worse time, following the pressure caused by the lorry driver shortage. There is also concern in the Steel Industry that things will only get worse. If they are at this price now, what is it going to be like in the winter . And if it carried on like this, i am really fearful of notjust the steel sector, but all energy intensive sectors. And then downstream operations. Because that is what we do, we are at the start of that Supply Chain, we sell to manufacturers. The Gas Price Rise is hitting businesses at the moment, but it is likely to feed through to higher bills for consumers. Katy austin, bbc news. Our political Correspondent Peter Saull is here. Some Peter Saull is here. Pretty urgent talks, an indication some pretty urgent talks, an indication ofjust how worried they are . Indication of ust how worried they are . , , , indication of ust how worried they are . , m are . Yes, the Business Secretary will hold around are . Yes, the Business Secretary will hold around 20 are . Yes, the Business Secretary will hold around 20 facetoface | will hold around 20 face to face chats with members of the Energy Industry. They will go into early next week as well. That does underline how seriously this is being taken in whitehall, but also between conversations and Food Industry bosses because this is not just an impact on the Energy Industry but going right the way down the Supply Chain, as you saw in that film. The line we are getting from government sources is that this highlights just how important it is that their plans to invest in renewable energy, reduce the Countrys Reliance on Fossil Fuels go ahead. We are vulnerable as a country to those volatile things that are happening in global markets. Labours shadow environment secretary, ed miliband, said this afternoon this is a long Term Failure of planning from the government, which has left us vulnerable to these big price rises. With cop coming up in a matter of weeks, it does make you wonder. What could the what could the government possibly do . Could the what could the government possibly do . There are some Things Government possibly do . There are some things the government possibly do . There are some things the Government Government possibly do . There are some things the government could | government possibly do . There are. Some things the government could do, step in to help out some of the smaller energy firms, there are concerns about the firms that are not the big six, because they are vulnerable to the wholesale Gas Price changes. When it comes to the Carbon Dioxide shortage, because thatis Carbon Dioxide shortage, because that is the more pressing concern, the possibility of food shortages, that kind of thing and they say they are looking at a range of options. The key thing, i guess, would be to get those two fertiliser plants, the one in cheshire and the one in teesside back open. Otherwise they need to get Carbon Dioxide from elsewhere. One of the options they are looking at is importing Carbon Dioxide from overseas. I are looking at is importing Carbon Dioxide from overseas. Are looking at is importing Carbon Dioxide from overseas. I dont know if many Peeple Dioxide from overseas. I dont know if many People remember, dioxide from overseas. I dont know if many People remember, there i dioxide from overseas. I dont know. If many People remember, there was dioxide from overseas. I dont know i if many People remember, there was a similar Co2 Crisis back in 2018. How did we come out of that . Where their lessons learned, you wonder if anything was put in place to mitigate this happening again . I suppose it will come as a surprise to some People how reliant we are on Carbon Dioxide. Producing Carbon Dioxide emissions is different, but to make dry ice, you need Carbon Dioxide, to keep food frozen and keep it preserved. It will reduce the Shelf Life of the food we rely on. We also have a Vaccination Programme going on and vaccines need to be stored at lower temperatures. The government has also said the priority in terms of Co2 Supplies will be the nhs and also the nuclear power industry. Because we need to be reliant on different energy forms and nuclear power also need co2 to function. And nuclear power also need c02 to function. , ~ ,. ,. Function. Peter, thank you very much for that. Ellen fraser is an Energy Analyst and partner at the Management Consultancy Firm baringa. She said we could see more companies go under before The End of the winter. There is a real range. We have some of the bigger suppliers, they buy their Energy Ahead, they hedge their energy to make sure they smooth out the volatility in the pricing curves that happen. Some of the bigger ones will be much more stable. It takes a lot of money to buy that Energy Ahead and trade, the amount of collateral they have to post are significant. A lot of the smaller suppliers dont have the money to do that and dont have the experience in terms of how to accurately forecast what you will need and then buy against that. The algorithms they use to predict what we use as consumers in the Home And Matching that often in terms of accurately what they purchase in advance, is quite a sophisticated skill. We have a number of new Market Entrants who dont have the skill to hedge effectively or the Balance Sheet and the cash to be able to do that. It leaves them much more vulnerable. Typically, you would see this kind of market, some of the bigger players being more stable and the smaller ones being much more vulnerable. If these Energy Companies do go bust, what does that mean for consumers who are their customers . And, will the government be there to help . Ultimately, ofgem guarantees People will not see supply outages. If your supplier goes bust, there is no way you will see an outage as a result. There is a process called solar, supplier of last resort. It is a complex process but it is practised a number of times in recent months, we have seen four suppliers going bust in recent weeks and they are being reallocated. Going into winter last year, the same thing happened, a number of smaller suppliers went bust. From a supply standpoint, no problem. In saying that, we start to see that when a number of suppliers go under there is operational challenges for that number of customers being moved to bigger suppliers. There will be some constraints, but that is why the industry will be getting together with the government this afternoon, to work out how many customers do we expect to see impacted by this and what is the best way to start managing that from an industry standpoint, to make sure that Consumer Supply is protected, Customer Balances are protected, if you have a credit balance, to make sure it will not be lost and you are migrated onto the most stable suppliers are managed from their followers. Travel companies say that Holiday Bookings have surged since Yesterdays Announcement that foreign Travel Rules are being relaxed in england. The Travel Traffic Light system is being replaced with a single Red List. Fully vaccinated People will no longer need a pre Departure Test before returning from non Red List areas. Simonjones reports. Half term holidays abroad look set to become simpler and cheaper for many families, to the relief of the travel industry. Its very important for The End of the season. Theres lots of People havent had a holiday for two years. Its a big boost for the industry, and what weve said all along is the best support we can get from the government is being able to fly again. From the 11th of october, fully vaccinated travellers returning to england from countries that arent on the Red List will no longer need to take a test before they travel, and from The End of october they wont need an expensive Pcr Test on their return. Itll be replaced by a lateral Flow Test. Children will be treated the same as vaccinated adults. But if youre not Double Jabbed, it is very different. Youll need to test before you travel back and self isolate at home for ten days, as well as pay for Pcr Tests. Be aware that if youre not vaccinated then im afraid there are by necessity more costs and bureaucracy involved under this system. Travel agents are gearing up for a busy weekend of bookings. This is what weve been waiting for a long time. It takes away all the confusion, and thats been one of our biggest barriers, and one of the biggest reasons why People havent been wanting to book theyre confused. But some scientists have warned that fewer People taking Pcr Tests, which are sent to labs for analysis, could make it harder to identify new variants of the virus being imported into england. At stamford airport, some travellers were concerned. I think its good to keep the testing, in a way. I think its safer for everyone. Yes, we have to live with covid. However, i think its still important to get tested. Anyones thats Double Jabbed should be able to be tested without any extra tests and things. The new Travel Rules remain in place until the new year at least. The welsh government says it is considering whether to follow them. Northern ireland has yet to announce any decision. But the scottish Government Wont at this stage change the tests travellers need to take due to what it calls significant concerns about the impact on public health. Simon jones, bbc news. There is some concern over how the monitoring for Coronavirus Variants will continue without the need for Pcr Tests. Dr Simon Clarke is an Associate Professor in cellular microbiology at the university of reading. Thank you forjoining us on bbc news. In terms of the monitoring of the variance and the use of the Pcr Tests, there were a few Questions Yesterday over the percentage of those Pcr Tests, 5 were used. We have heard much higherfigures. I guess it is where People have come from in that randomisation, it might not be completely random. If you dont fulfil the potential of a task, which in the case of Pcr Test is the ability to sequence bits of the gene, bits of the Genetic Code for the virus, there isnt a lot of point in doing them. They can happen anywhere in the world. There seems to be this assumption People have that they happen overseas, they are not something that happens in the uk. Of course, this time last year the kent variance, as we were calling it then, we are now calling it the alpha variant, arose in the uk, in kent. It spread right around the world. They can happen here, just as much as they can happen in other countries. We are not immune from Generating Troublesome new variance in this country. I from Generating Troublesome new variance in this country. Variance in this country. I want to look at the variance in this country. I want to look at the red variance in this country. Obviously, if it is a new potentially troublesome variant, then there is very little chance the government will want to risk importing it into this country. But the actual metrics, the criteria they use, they have never told us. You do look at some countries and then you look at the data and you think, how has this decision been arrived at. I have not had chance to sit down with the latest ons data, but it is about one in 80, one in 85 People in this country, in england at least, are thought to be carrying the virus. It is worth pointing out that we are about to take turkey off the Red List. They have an Infection Frequency of about 210, 220 per 100,000 People, where ours is over 300 to 100,000 People. Although you do get a general antiviral response when you get infected with one but it is possible to be infected with both. The biggest effect will be hospitals having a Flu Programme and a Covid Programme and one will lay on top of the other. That is where you are going to get, if we do get a Flu Problem this year, it is not guaranteed, but if you do, that is when you end up with real trouble, end up with unsustainable pressure on the health care system. France is recalling its ambassadors to australia and the United States for talks, in an escalating diplomatic row over a new Defence Agreement and nuclear submarine deal. On thursday the leaders of australia, the us and the uk announced details of the new Security Pact , know as aukus, scuppering a multi million Pound Agreement france had already made with australia to supply submarines. As he left his residence earlier, the french ambassador to australia, described the decision as a huge mistake. Our corresponent Hugh Schofield has the latest from paris. We already knew the french reaction would be one of fury. We already heard jean yves le drian, the foreign minister, on thursday saying it was like a stab in the back. But my reading is that President Macron feels that the message isn t getting through. He fears that in america, australia, britain, they take the french reaction to be one of anger over the loss of the contract. The contract, i think from the french Point Of View is the least of it. Yes, there s money at stake, but far more important in french eyes is a loss of face, the humiliation and the sense that things have been cooked up behind their back. This was a deal arranged between the americans, the australians and the british, three english speaking nations, without any kind of consultation with france, who they insist are after all a nation with a stake in the pacific region because they have territory out there in polynesia and new caledonia. There is a huge degree of anger and the recall of the ambassadors, though not significantly the british ambassador, is meant to reinforce this feeling that france is very unhappy, fears that there s a new World Order being sorted out behind itS Back in which it has no part. A relative of ten afghan civilians killed in an american Drone Strike in kabul last month says he s glad that the us has accepted its mistake. The brother of the Aid Worker says he wants Compensation And Resettlement for the family in a safe country. Seven of the dead were children. He s been talking with our middle East Editorjeremy Bowen and a warning, his report does contain details some viewers may find distressing. This is all that remains of the Toyota Corolla that the americans tracked for hours as they convinced themselves, entirely incorrectly, that it was packed with explosives. Five of the seven dead children were playing in the car when it was hit. It s owner, zemari ahmadi, who they believed wrongly was an islamic state bomber, had just driven it home from his work with an american aid organisation. The survivors have moved out. After their terrible loss, they want Compensation And Resettlement in a safe country. This was america s last act of war before it pulled out of afghanistan and the decision to fire the missile smacks of panic. And what a legacy. It isn t necessarily the Parting Shot of the americans, because they still have the capacity to hit targets from the air. The us relies increasingly on drones. Across the road, the neighbours are still traumatised by what they heard and saw. America s latest deadly blunder shows how dangerous its drone strategy can be for civilians. Jeremy bowen, bbc news, kabul. Us real Estate Heir Robert durst, who was the subject of a tv crime series, has been convicted of killing his best Friend Susan Berman more than 20 years ago. Durst shot the 55 year old inside her Beverly Hills home in 2000. Prosecutors say it was to stop her telling police what she knew about his wife s death two decades earlier. Now, if there weren t enough pressures on families already this year, we re now learning that there may be a shortage of popular toys this christmas. The toy Retailers Association says ongoing problems with shipping containers, and a lack of lorry drivers, means it s taking longer for products to arrive from overseas. The bbc has refused to comment on speculation that two of this year s Strictly Come Dancing professional dancers have not been vaccinated against covid. The latest series starts tonight on Bbc One but some of the Celebrity Dancers are reportedly reluctant to be paired with them. One former contestant is Dr Ranj singh, an Nhs Consultant Pediatrician and Tv Presenter who took part in 2018. Vaccination is not mandatory, it s an offer. And i think we should all be playing our part in doing whatever we can to try and keep everybody safe. Not just ourselves, but those around us. There may be legitimate reasons for those People to not to be able to have the jab and we ve got to understand that. But i think we ve all got our part to play to be as safe as possible and that s notjust about vaccination, that s about being careful around hand hygiene, trying to distance, wear a mask in enclosed spaces, all those other things we should be doing. In response to the reports, a strictly spokesperson said. Students in the uk who are not yet vaccinated are being urged to get their covid jab during freshers week. Dozens of universities have set up Pop Up Clinics and Walk In Centres as the new academic year begins. Megan paterson has more. A new addition to the usual freshers week festivities at Oxford Brookes University Pop Up Clinics and grab a Jab Drop ins, all aimed at encouraging as many students as possible to get vaccinated, amid some concern about covid spread in young People. We are aware just before the summer there was quite a high increase in Covid Infection rates amongst the 18 24 year olds, so we re really keen to try and sort of capture them just as they re coming back to university, to make sure in the environment they live in maybe in shared houses that we minimise the spread and the transmission of covid as much as possible. Obviously we want People to really enjoy their University Terms and so it s to really make it possible for them to do that. In england, 72 of young People aged between 18 and 2a have already had theirfirstjab. Among them is holly, now waiting for her second. It is as much about her own freedom as protecting others. Were socialising with other People and wed like to be vaccinated, and eventually id like to be able to go on holiday. Im worried about Family Members getting it, as well, because theyve got to go to work and all of those sorts of things. So financially they need to be able to go off to work, so its important for me to get it as welt with so much disruption to College And University terms last year, they hope to return face to Face Teaching as the norm. We do want to have studentS Back on campus, but we want them to feel safe. We want everyone in the University Community to feel safe. I think the first thing that we re really focusing on with all students is do take the opportunity
