Strike during their final days in afghanistan. Strictly S Back but theres controversy as reports suggests that two of the show s professional dancers are refusing to get covid jabs. And coming up. Well find out about the biggest exhibition of iranian arts and culture in the uk. Thats at 2 30pm here on bbc news. Good afternoon. The government is holding urgent talks with the Energy Industry about a sharp increase in wholesale Gas Prices, which have risen to record levels. There are warnings that the increase will raise Consumer Energy costs and other prices its already affecting Food Production and agriculture. The rising cost of wholesale Gas Prices is being driven by several factors including strong global demand. Our Business Correspondent Katy austin has more. Gas is a key source of the energy that helps to heat our homes and power our industries. But reasons including high demand and lower solar and Wind Output have seen wholesale prices soar, almost doubling since the start of this year. It is an unprecedented situation according to Energy Market analysts. Gas prices around the world in Asia And Europe are at record highs. In europe, there is a big supply squeeze. What is happening here in great britain is not unique. The high prices have already led two large Uk Fertiliser plants to close. One consequence of that is a nationwide shortage of carbon dioxide. That is the gas used to stun some animals before slaughtering and in the meat packaging process. One Trade Body said this would cause huge problems because it is so widely used. It is used to extend the Shelf Life of Packaging Notjust in meat, but all foods. And at a time when we are struggling because of the Haulage Shortages in this country to keep the Supply Chain running, to have a shortage of Shelf Life on the products going onto shelves is going to cause even more disruption so this is a really serious problem for us. Online Food Delivery Company ocado has confirmed it has limited stock of some frozen foods because the squeeze on c02 means it cant get enough dry ice. The Trade Body which represents major supermarkets said the Disruption Couldnt have come at a worse time, following the pressure caused by the lorry driver shortage. There is also concern in the Steel Industry that things will only get worse. If they are at this price now, what is it going to be like in the winter . And if it carried on like this, i am really fearful of notjust the steel sector, but all energy intensive sectors. And then downstream operations. Because that is what we do, we are at the start of that Supply Chain, we sell to manufacturers. The Gas Price Rise is hitting businesses at the moment, but it is likely to feed through to higher bills for consumers. Katy austin, bbc news. Travel companies say that Holiday Bookings have surged since Yesterdays Announcement that foreign Travel Rules are being relaxed in england. The Travel Traffic Light system is being replaced with a single Red List. Fully vaccinated people will no longer need a pre Departure Test before returning from non Red List areas. Simonjones reports. Half term holidays abroad look set to become simpler and cheaper for many families, to the relief of the travel industry. Its very important for The End of the season. Theres lots of people havent had a holiday for two years. Its a big boost for the industry, and what weve said all along is the best support we can get from the government is being able to fly again. From the 4th of october, fully vaccinated travellers returning to england from countries that arent on the Red List will no longer need to take a test before they travel, and from The End of october they wont need an expensive Pcr Test on their return. Itll be replaced by a lateral flow test. Children will be treated the same as vaccinated adults. But if youre not Double Jabbed, it is very different. Youll need to test before you travel back and self isolate at home for ten days, as well as pay for Pcr Tests. Be aware that if youre not vaccinated then im afraid there are by necessity more costs and bureaucracy involved under this system. Travel agents are gearing up for a busy weekend of bookings. This is what weve been waiting for a long time. It takes away all the confusion, and thats been one of our biggest barriers, and one of the biggest reasons why people havent been wanting to book theyre confused. But some scientists have warned that fewer people taking Pcr Tests, which are sent to labs for analysis, could make it harder to identify new variants of the virus being imported into england. At stamford airport, some travellers were concerned. I think its good to keep the testing, in a way. I think its safer for everyone. Yes, we have to live with covid. However, i think its still important to get tested. Anyones thats Double Jabbed should be able to be tested without any extra tests and things. The new Travel Rules remain in place until the new year at least. The welsh government says it is considering whether to follow them. Northern ireland has yet to announce any decision. But the scottish Government Wont at this stage change the tests travellers need to take due to what it calls significant concerns about the impact on public health. Simon on public health. The us State Department says it intends to hold talks in the coming days to calm french anger over a new Defence Pact between the united states, the uk and australia. France is upset because the deal involves the cancellation of a contract to supply french designed submarines to the australian navy. In a measure of its frustration paris has recalled ambassadors to washington and canberra. Courtney bembridge reports. Back injune the two president s sat Side By side in The Sun in the uk. But that warmth has disappeared and, in an unprecedented move, france has recalled its ambassadors to the us and australia. This is why. Its about connecting americas existing allies and partners in new ways. A deal struck earlier in the week between the us, uk and australia for a fleet of nuclear powered submarines. It replaces a multi billion Dollar Deal Australia had signed with france in 2016, and france was only told about it hours before the public announcement, which has infuriated President Macron. First came this warning from the foreign minister. Translation i am angry with a lot of bitterness about this cancellation. It is not over. Then the next move. The french embassy in the us tweeted that the decision to recall the ambassadors came from the president directly and reflects the exceptional seriousness of the announcements made on september 15th, which It Says constitutes unacceptable behaviour from allies and partners. This is not mostly about the commercial nature or the money. This Submarine Deal that france had signed with australia four years ago was really the underpinning of Frances Presence in the indo pacific. This is a country, one of the two main European Countries in the region that was conducting freedom of Navigation Operation in the south china sea. This is at a time when the biden administration had said that he wants to work with European Allies to confront chinas assertiveness. The us says france is its oldest ally, and the Defence Secretary has spoken to his french counterpart to try to resolve their differences. It was clear from the discussion that there is still much work to do in terms of our Defence Relationship with france. I mean, more things to work on. That there are opportunities and shared challenges and shared interests that both ministers committed to continue to explore. The Pact Means Australia will become only the seventh nation to operate nuclear powered submarines, and its widely seen as an effort to counter Chinas Influence in the contested south china sea, where it has built up Military Bases on islands and reefs. For its part, china has accused the us, uk and australia of having a Cold War mentality. Courtney bembridge, bbc news. Our correspondent Hugh Schofield has the latest from paris. We already knew the french reaction would be one of fury. We already heard jean yves le drian, the foreign minister, on thursday saying it was like a stab in the back. But my reading is that President Macron feels that the message isn t getting through. He fears that in america, australia, britain, they take the french reaction to be one of anger over the loss of the contract. The contract, i think from the french Point Of View is the least of it. Yes, there s money at stake, but far more important in french eyes is a loss of face, the humiliation and the sense that things have been cooked up behind their back. This was a deal arranged between the americans, the australians and the british, three english speaking nations, without any kind of consultation with france, who they insist are after all a nation with a stake in the pacific region because they have territory out there in polynesia and new caledonia. There is a huge degree of anger and the recall of the ambassadors, though not significantly the british ambassador, is meant to reinforce this feeling that france is very unhappy, fears that there s a new World Order being sorted out behind itS Back in which it has no part. A relative of ten afghan civilians killed in an american Drone Strike in kabul last month says he s glad that the us has accepted its mistake. The brother of the Aid Worker says he wants Compensation And Resettlement for the family in a safe country. Seven of the dead were children. He s been talking with our middle East Editorjeremy Bowen and a warning, his report does contain details some viewers may find distressing. This is all that remains of the Toyota Corolla that the americans tracked for hours as they convinced themselves, entirely incorrectly, that it was packed with explosives. Five of the seven dead children were playing in the car when it was hit. It s owner, zemari ahmadi, who they believed wrongly was an islamic state bomber, had just driven it home from his work with an american aid organisation. The survivors have moved out. After their terrible loss, they want Compensation And Resettlement in a safe country. Here today, this is my message for usa and all the people around the world, that the usa made a big mistake here and we lost a member of our family. This was america s last act of war before it pulled out of afghanistan and the decision to fire the missile smacks of panic. And what a legacy. It isn t necessarily the Parting Shot of the americans, because they still have the capacity to hit targets from the air. The us relies increasingly on drones. Across the road, the neighbours are still traumatised by what they heard and saw. America s latest deadly blunder shows how dangerous its drone strategy can be for civilians. Jeremy bowen, bbc news, kabul. The headlines on bbc news. Worries over the soaring price of gas the government s holding urgent talks with Energy Industry bosses. Holiday firms say they expect a surge in bookings after Travel Restrictions in england are relaxed. France is recalling its ambassadors to australia and the united states, in protest over a Security Deal which also includes the uk. Let s get more now on our lead story, those urgent talks taking Place Today between the government and the Energy Industry. The rise in cost is having a Knock On Effect on a range of industries, as well as the Price Householders are paying in their utility bills. We are recovering from the pandemic and the economy is bouncing back. We are using more energy to get Manufacturing And Transport going. Also we are entering the Winter Period where we are beginning to put on heating in our homes, for example. You have the Demand Side increasing. From a Supply Side standpoint, we have challenges, the weather has been calm, so things like Wind Generation on which the uk has become much more reliance, has dropped off quite materially. Secondly, we tend to fill up our Gas Storage facilities over the summer and imports from russia that come to us through europe historically, have been more constrained over the summer so our Gas Storage tanks are effectively at lower levels than we would typically see at this time of year. And thirdly we have maintenance challenges. People will be aware of the interconnected challenge where there was a fire in ashford which has taken one of the interconnect is out. There are several interconnected into europe, but as soon as you have an issue on one of those interconnections, and low levels, we have a supply challenge situation. Our Storage Facilities are Generation Facilities and they are resilient, but when you see all of these impacts happening at once, and the weather is an unpredictable thing, it makes it more difficult for us to manage the situation in the uk. We have some of the bigger suppliers, they buy their Energy Ahead, they hedge their energy to make sure they smooth out the volatility in the pricing curves that happen. Some of the bigger ones will be much more stable. It takes a lot of money to buy that Energy Ahead and trade, the amount of collateral they have to post are significant. A lot of the smaller suppliers don t have the money to do that and don t have the experience in terms of how to accurately forecast what you will need and then buy against that. The algorithms they used to predict what we use as consumers in the Home And Matching that often in terms of accurately what they purchase in advance, is quite a sophisticated skill. We have a number of new Market Entrants who don t have the skill to hedge effectively of the Balance Sheet and the cash to be able to do that. It leaves them much more vulnerable. If your supply goes bust, there is no way you will see an outage as a result. There is a process called solar, supplier of last resort. It is a complex process but it is practised a number of times in recent months, we have seen four supplier is going bust in recent weeks and they are being reallocated. Going into winter last year, the same thing happened, a number of smaller suppliers went bust. From a supply standpoint, no problem. In saying that, we start to see that when a number of suppliers go under there is operational challenges for that number of customers being used to bigger suppliers. There will be some constraints, but that is why the industry will be getting together with the government this afternoon, to work out how many customers do we expect to see impacted by this and what is the best way to start managing that from an industry standpoint, to make sure that Consumer Supply is protected, Customer Balance is protected, if you have a credit balance, to make sure it will not be lost and you are migrated onto the most stable suppliers are managed from their followers. ,. , ~ ,. , followers. The bbc has refused to comment on speculation that two of this year s Strictly Come Dancing professional dancers have not been vaccinated against covid. The latest series starts tonight on Bbc One but some of the Celebrity Dancers are reportedly reluctant to be paired with them. One former contestant is Dr Ranj singh, an Nhs Consultant Pediatrician and Tv Presenter who took part in 2018. Vaccination is not mandatory, it s an offer. And i think we should all be playing our part in doing whatever we can to try and keep everybody safe. Not just ourselves, but those around us. There may be legitimate reasons for those people to not to be able to have the jab and we ve got to understand that. But i think we ve all got our part to play to be as safe as possible and that s notjust about vaccination, that s about being careful around hand hygiene, trying to distance, wear a mask in enclosed spaces, all those other things we should be doing. In response to the reports, a strictly spokesperson said. Students in the uk who are not yet vaccinated are being urged to get their covid jab during freshers week. Dozens of universities have set up Pop Up Clinics and Walk In Centres as the new academic year begins. Megan paterson has more. Have you registered with a gp . A new addition to the usual freshers week festivities at oxford brookes university. 0. 3. Pop up clinics and grab a Jab Drop ins all aimed at encouraging as many students as possible to get vaccinated, amid some concern about covid spread in young people. We are aware just before the summer there was quite a high increase in Covid Infection rates amongst the 18 24 year olds, so we re really keen to try and sort of capture them just as they re coming back to university, to make sure in the environment they live in maybe in shared houses that we minimise the spread and the transmission of covid as much as possible. Obviously, we want people to really enjoy their university terms, and so it s to really make it possible for them to do that. In england, 72 of young people aged between 18 and 2a have already had theirfirstjab. Among them is holly now waiting for her second, it s as much about her own freedom as protecting others. Were socialising with other people and wed like to be vaccinated. And eventually, id like to be able to go on holiday. Im worried about Family Members getting it as well, because theyve got to go to work and all of those things. So financially, they need to be able to go off to work, so its important for me to get it as well thank you for coming. With so much disruption to College And University terms last year, it s hoped increased vaccination will keep students well and return face to Face Teaching as the norm. We do want to have studentS Back on campus, we want them to feel safe, we want everyone in the University Community to feel safe. I think the first thing that we re really focusing on with all students is, do take the opportunity to get vaccinated. We know that vaccinations are the best protection that individuals can take. It s the best protection for the University Community as a whole. Many universities will still ask students to wear masks and will manage timetables to avoid Overcrowding Nhs teams hopeful that, coupled with increased vaccination, will not only maximise student enjoyment, but also reduce pressure on services, as we approach the winter months. Megan patterson, bbc news. Having stood for more than 60 years, the Dorman Long Tower has long been a symbol of teesside s industrial heritage. It ll be demolished tomorrow despite a long campaign to save it. Ian reeve reports. The posters may be up, but teesside s Dorman Long Tower is coming down. Just a week after being listed by Conservation Body historic england, it has been delisted. This former coal store, part of south bank s coke ovens and the wider redcar steelworks, found not to be of any great architectural interest and in a state of some disrepair. For tees valley s mayor, who controls the site, relief. The tower could be in the way of a new Wind Turbine factory, promisingjobs. We have to prioritise giving people opportunities and jobs, and saving tax payers money. I mean, 2,000jobs are not to be sniffed at. Those people who say that this is a piece of heritage, my argument would be that teesside s heritage is in the structures that built the world it s in the one world trade center, the shard, the sydney harbour bridge. Those are the things we should be taking pride in. Signing off the delisting of the Dorman Long Tower was the first act of the new culture secretary, nadine dorries. The race is now on to try to prepare the 1950s Tower for demolition early tomorrow morning. Three other structures will also come down, but the Dorman Long Tower will be most missed. The former Bridge Builder a famous name, building amongst other things the sydney harbour bridge. Archive a steamer puts out to sea, while on the roadway a stream of Motor Traffic glides by, and all around is a web of steel spun by the industry of men. For some, then, demolition seems like a severing of the link with the Glorious Industrial Past certainly so for lisa and ian, taking a last look today. It s a receptacle of so many memories for so many people here through generations, looking back on their forebears who have worked here, and i don t know if we can throw all of that away. I think we deserve at least part of its keeping. The tower would have cost £9 million to maintain, so demolition beckons blown up and brought down early tomorrow morning, ending its life, not with a whimper, but with a bang. Ian reeve, bbc news.
