Us armed forces apologise for their tragic mistake, after killing ten innocent people, including children, in a Drone Strike during their final days in afghanistan. British retailers warn of a possible shortage of some toys this christmas because of Supply Chain problems. For viewers in the uk, Strictly Come Dancing is back and theres controversy as reports suggests that two of the show s professional dancers are refusing to get Covid Jabs. Hello and welcome if you re watching in the uk or around the world. The British Government is to hold urgent talks with the Energy Industry amid growing concern about a spike in wholesale Gas Prices in the uk. A combination of high global demand and lower solar and Wind Output have been blamed for the price hike. The government says there is no threat to Uk Gas supplies. The Business Secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng, will be talking to gas producers, the national grid, suppliers and the regulator ofgem. Its predicted the typical Gas And Electricity customer is likely to see their Bill Go Up by £139 from october. The high Gas Prices have already led two large Uk Fertiliser plants to close thats important because they produce Carbon Dioxide, a key element of the Meat Production Process leading to concerns about food supplies. Ive been speaking to our political correspondent, peter saull. Lots of high level meetings. 20, im told, One On one chats, that the Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng is going to have with Energy Suppliers both large and small, the operators ofgem too. Weather for example smaller suppliers will be able to absorb the soaring costs of this gas. I should stress this is a global issue with global Gas Prices soaring, largely because of an increase in demand, but also problems with maintenance of some Gas Facilities around the world. In terms of Preserving Food and packaging, but also on the Meet Side of things as well, Carbon Dioxide is used as a stunner before animals are slaughtered. So yes, an awful lot to take into account and i think this is a Cross Government Effort now as well, the department for the environment, food and rural affairs also monitoring the situation that it seems like is escalating this. What does all this mean for families who are watching today . The first thing is the impact on your energy bills. Meat products, the british meat Processors Association saying earlier on this is a crisis now on the shelves could run empty soon. Also in terms of energy bills. You may have already seen your tariff go up may have already seen your tariff go up if you are on a variable contract. The Energy Cap is there in place, the government is keen to stress, so that people are not paying too much, but that cap is due to rise as well because of the impact of the wholesale gas price situation, but the other Thing Ministers are keen to stress is that this is a Price Issue, so it is not a question of the lights going out or anything like that. They are very confident there will not be any supply issues over the winter, but certainly this Price Issue is having an impact. The rising Energy Prices are affecting Steel Production in this country. Gareth stace is the Director General of uk steel, which represents steel manufacturers. Hello, gareth stace. If we look at the price increases we have seen, last year we were paying £50 a megawatt this week we are paying £2500 a megawatt and if you think about that from our bills at home, that would have been 5p a Kilowatt Hour to £2 50 a Kilowatt Hour, so 50 times increase. As the Steel Sector, we are hugely electro intensive and so much so that if you think of a Steel Plant it can use about 50 or half as much as all of the electricity in a big city like sheffield, so it is a huge amount of electricity, so therefore plant managers at the moment will be looking at the Prices Today and thinking, do i produce steel or do i stop producing steel . If we stop producing steel, we are not making any money, putting jobs at risk and if you think about it the Steel Sector at the moment is very buoyant, so why would we want to be stopping producing steeljust because Electricity Prices are so high . But the key for us here because it would be easy to say, well, it is the market, the market. But we pay more for electricity than, say, Steel Plants in germany and at the moment instead of R Price Disparity is a sector being something like £55 million a year that we pay more than our competitors, that is now doubled, so we are now this week paying £10 million more over Electricity Prices in our direct competitors in germany, which means we are less competitive on its global market. Why are we paying more than steel in germany . Why are we paying more than steel in german . ,. , germany . Because they have less Transmission Germany . Because they have less transmission charges, germany . Because they have less transmission charges, other germany . Because they have Lessi Transmission charges, other policy costs such as renewable charges and carbon charges than we do. So as the price of steel has increased, that is why that price disparity, the difference between what we pay compared to germany, has just grown exponentially. 50 compared to germany, has ust grown exponentially. Exponentially. So that is because of decisions that exponentially. So that is because of decisions that our exponentially. So that is because of decisions that our government exponentially. So that is because of. Decisions that our government makes that add up those costs . That add up those costs . Absolutely, victoria. That add up those costs . Absolutely, victoria when that add up those costs . Absolutely, victoria. When you that add up those costs . Absolutely, victoria. When you think that add up those costs . Absolutely, victoria. When you think about that add up those costs . Absolutely, victoria. When you think about it,. Victoria. When you think about it, yes, government might turn round and say, im sorry, this isjust the market, well no, government and ofgem, you have levers that you can pull and for us as a Steel Sector those are reducing those costs, which i havejust mentioned, which they could do next week and that is what we are calling on our government to do. We have been saying to Government Year in and year out that these additional costs that our competitors dont pay are damaging us. That wont be a silver bullet, that wont bring prices back down to what they were a year ago, but what they will do is bring us in line with our direct competitors in germany and france. fire Line with our direct competitors in germany and france. Line with our direct competitors in germany and france. Are some of your members pausing germany and france. Are some of your members pausing steel germany and france. Are some of your members pausing Steel Production germany and france. Are some of your members pausing Steel Production in l members pausing Steel Production in order to cope with this Price Rise . Yes, so certainly we have heard from some steel companies last week and the week before having to pause production at certain times of the Day Or Night when that price spikes, but the key thing for us, i think, is how long will this Go On For . Because we normally see in the summer and at night in the summer he lowest prices you will get all year round. Well, if they are at this price now, what is it going to be like in the winterif it carried on like in the winterif it carried on like this, then i am really fearful of notjust like this, then i am really fearful of not just the like this, then i am really fearful of notjust the Steel Sector, but all energy intensive sectors, operations because that is what we do. We are at the start of that Supply Chain, we sell to manufacturers and manufacturers sell to retailers and so on, so this really is the sign of a very, very unhealthy market and given that ofgem said a few weeks ago the market is healthy, it really isnt healthy, it is a very poorly sector. What are you fearful of . What is the worst Case Scenario . The what are you fearful of . What is the worst Case Scenario . Worst Case Scenario . The worst Case Scenario will worst Case Scenario . The worst Case Scenario will be worst Case Scenario . The worst Case Scenario will be that worst Case Scenario . The worst Case Scenario will be that the worst Case Scenario . The worst Case Scenario will be that the Prices Scenario will be that the prices stay like this. I hope that they wont because it is so extraordinary and unprecedented that the prices are this high. I hope the market settles down, but if they dont you will see steel producers pause in production more and more and having to think about the workforce going forward. I am to think about the workforce going forward. Iam not to think about the workforce going forward. I am not saying today that thatis forward. I am not saying today that that is going to happen, but if it carried on like that then, you know, i would be fearful of sectors like steel. . ,. , steel. And other electro intensive sectors. The us State Department says it intends to hold talks in the coming days to calm french anger over a new Defence Pact between the united states, the uk and australia. France is upset because the deal involves the cancellation of a contract to supply french designed submarines to the australian navy. In a measure of its frustration paris has recalled ambassadors to washington and canberra. Courtney bembridge reports. Back injune the two president s sat Side By side in The Sun in the uk. But that warmth has disappeared and, in an unprecedented move, france has recalled its ambassadors to the us and australia. This is why. Its about connecting americas existing allies and partners in new ways. A deal struck earlier in the week between the us, uk and australia for a fleet of nuclear powered submarines. It replaces a multi billion Dollar Deal Australia had signed with france in 2016, and france was only told about it hours before the public announcement, which has infuriated president macron. First came this warning from the foreign minister. Translation i am angry with a lot of bitterness about this cancellation. It is not over. Then the next move. The french embassy in the us tweeted that the decision to recall the ambassadors came from the president directly and reflects the exceptional seriousness of the announcements made on september 15th, which it says constitutes unacceptable behaviour from allies and partners. This is not mostly about the commercial nature or the money. This Submarine Deal that france had signed with australia four years ago was really the underpinning of Frances Presence in the indo pacific. This is a country, one of the two main European Countries in the region that was conducting freedom of Navigation Operation in the south china sea. This is at a time when the biden administration had said that he wants to work with European Allies to confront chinas assertiveness. The us says france is its oldest ally, and the Defence Secretary has spoken to his french counterpart to try to resolve their differences. It was clear from the discussion that there is still much work to do in terms of our Defence Relationship with france. I mean, more things to work on. That there are opportunities and shared challenges and shared interests that both ministers committed to continue to explore. The Pact Means Australia will become only the seventh nation to operate nuclear powered submarines, and its widely seen as an effort to counter Chinas Influence in the contested south china sea, where it has built up Military Bases on islands and reefs. For its part, china has accused the us, uk and australia of having a Cold War mentality. Courtney bembridge, bbc news. Us real Estate Heir Robert durst who was the subject of a Tv Crime Series has been convicted of killing his best Friend Susan Berman more than 20 years ago. Durst shot the 55 year old inside her Beverly Hills home in 2000, in what prosecutors say was a bid to stop her telling police what she knew about his Wifes Death two decades earlier. The 78 year old whos recovering from cancer was subject of the hbo series, the jinx. A man has been stabbed to death in a street in sheffield city centre. South Yorkshire Police were called on Friday Afternoon to reports a man had sustained serious injuries in an attack. The force says that he has since died in hospital, and a man in his 30s has been arrested. Holiday companies say they expect a surge in bookings after the British Government announced rules around international travel in england were being eased. But there are concerns that scrapping Pcr Tests for people who are Double Jabbed will affect the Countrys Ability to monitor covid variants. Simonjones reports. Half term holidays abroad look set to become simpler and cheaper for many families, to the relief of the travel industry. Its very important for The End of the season. Theres lots of people havent had a holiday for two years. I think its a big boost for the industry, and what weve said all along is the best support we can get from the government is being able to fly again. From 11th october, fully vaccinated travellers returning to england from countries that arent on the Red List will no longer need to take a test before they travel, and from The End of october they wont need an expensive Pcr Test on their return. Itll be replaced by a lateral flow test. Children will be treated the same as vaccinated adults. But if youre not Double Jabbed, it is very different. Youll need to test before you travel back and self isolate at home for ten days, as well as pay for Pcr Tests. Be aware that if youre not vaccinated then im afraid there are, by necessity, more costs and bureaucracy involved under this system. Travel agents are gearing up for a busy weekend of bookings. This is what weve been waiting for a long time. It takes away all the confusion, and thats been one of our biggest barriers, and one of the biggest reasons why people havent been wanting to book theyre confused. But some scientists have warned that fewer people taking Pcr Tests, which are sent to labs for analysis, could make it harder to identify new variants of the virus being imported into england. At stamford airport, some travellers were concerned. I think its good to keep the testing, in a way. I think its safer for everyone. Yes, we have to live with covid. However, i think its still important to get tested. Anyone thats Double Jabbed should be able to travel without any extra tests and things. The new Travel Rules will remain in place in england until the new year, at least. The welsh government says it is considering whether to follow them. Northern ireland has yet to announce any decision. But the scottish Government Wont at this stage change the tests travellers need to take due to what it calls significant concerns about the impact on public health. Simon jones, bbc news. Holiday firms say they expect a surge in bookings after Travel Restrictions in england are relaxed. An American General has admitted that a Drone Strike which killed 10 innocent people in kabul was a tragic mistake. An Aid Worker and nine members of his family including seven children died in the blast. The us had initially claimed they targeted a suspected suicide bomber. Nomia iqbal reports. These are the victims of one of the us military s final actions in afghanistan. Ten innocent people, including an Aid Worker and seven children, were killed in an american Drone Strike, days before the us left for good. The youngest, sumaya, was just two years old. America thought it was targeting isis k, the Terrorist Group that had carried out a deadly attack days earlier at kabul airport, killing 13 us troops and hundreds of afghans. But the military now admits it got it wrong. I offer my profound condolences to the family and friends of those who were killed. This strike was taken in the earnest belief that it would prevent an imminent threat to our forces and the evacuees at the airport. But it was a mistake, and i offer my sincere apology. As the combatant commander, i am fully responsible for the strike and its tragic outcome. This Drone Strike was part of president bidens controversial over the horizon strategy, which involves fighting terrorists from the sky, not on foot. The general said the intelligence suggested that a white car similar to the one they struck was about to be used in an attack on the airport, but they also misinterpreted the loading of Water Bottles into its boot as explosives. Emal ahmadi, the father of the young girl killed, spoke to the bbc at the time. My brother came from his work, wanted to park the car in here, and there are children that were in the car at the time that happened. And how many people from yourfamily died . Ten persons has died in here we lost ten persons, including my daughter, who was two years old. General mckenzie said the us would consider paying reparations to the family. However, he said america stands by its intelligence. This awful mistake further dents the us military s reputation, which has already been damaged by its chaotic withdrawal from afghanistan. Bbc news, washington. For viewers in the uk, Strictly Come Dancing is back. 15 celebrities will be paired with their dancing partners on bbc one tonight, and then in two weeks the live peformances begin. One former contestant is Dr Ranj singh, an Nhs Consultant Paediatrician and Tv Presenter who took part in 2018. There is this weird dichotomy of excitement and a little bit ofjealousy. Because secretly we all want to do it again. Do you . Do you really . Absolutely. I had such a good time. It was the single mostjoyous, yet difficult experience of my life. And i work on the front line. It was just such an incredible experience and there is nothing like it. If you were to do it again, Dr Ranj, what would you do differently this time . Ooh, well, i wouldnt be able to dance with my partner, janette, because she is moving onto it takes two, which is exciting in itself. Yeah. I would love to dance with another boy, actually. Ah, that is interesting because this is the first series where we will have an all male pairing. What is your view about that . I think it is fantastic. I think the audience want it. I think it is a sign of progression. Its the way the world is going and it is long overdue. We saw when graziano and johannes danced their Group Number i think it was a couple of years ago now how much of a positive response that had, and how amazing it was. It was a real signal to lgbt people out there that you matter. You count, you are seen. And you are just as important as anyone else. And i think, whether it is two women, a guy and a girl, two men. It doesnt matter. It is dance at The End of the day. Yeah. And we had, of course, Nicola Adams and katya last year, and they had to withdraw unfortunately early because of covid. You were lucky, you did it before the pandemic. There are so many guidelines the cast have to follow. There are Reports Today on the front of The Sun that suggests that two of the professional dancers are declining to take a Covid Jab. What is your view on that, as an Nhs Consultant Paediatrician . Ithink. Vaccination is not mandatory. It is an offer. And we should all be playing our part, doing whatever we can to try to keep everybody safe, not just ourselves, but those around us. There may be legitimate reasons for those people to not be able to have the jab and we have got to understand that. But we have all got a part to play to be as safe as possible. That is notjust about vaccination, it is about being careful around hand hygiene, trying to distance, wearing a mask in enclosed spaces, and all those other things that we should be doing. Students in the uk who are not yet vaccinated are being urged to get their Covid Jab during Freshers Week. Dozens of universities have set up Pop Up Clinics and Walk In Centres as the new academic year begins. Megan patterson has more. A new addition to the usual Freshers Week festivities at Oxford Brookes University Pop Up Clinics and grab a Jab Drop ins, all aimed at encouraging as many students as possible to get vaccinated, amid some concern about covid spread in young people. We are aware just before the summer there was quite a high increase in Covid Infection rates amongst the 18 24 year olds, so were really keen to try and sort of capture them just as theyre coming back to university, to make sure in the environment they live in maybe in shared houses that we minimise the spread and the transmission of covid as much as possible. Obviously we want people to really enjoy their University Terms and so its to really make it possible for them to do that. In england, 72 of young people aged between 18 and 2a have already had theirfirstjab. Among them is holly, now waiting for her second. It is as much about her own freedom as protecting others. Were socialising with other people and wed like to be vaccinated, and eventually id like to be able to go on holiday. Im worried about Family Members getting it, as well, because theyve got to go to work and all of those sorts of things. So financially they need to be able to go off to work, so its important for me to get it as welt with so much disruption to College And University, to College And University terms last year, they hope to return face to Face Teaching as the norm. We do want to have students back on campus, but we want them to feel safe. We want everyone in the University Community to feel safe. I think the first thing that were really focusing on with all students is do take the opportunity to get vaccinated. We know that vaccinations are the best protection that individuals can take. Its the best protection for the University Community as a whole. Many universities will still ask students to wear masks and will manage timetables to avoid overcrowding. Nhs teams hopeful that, coupled with strong vaccination, coupled with increased vaccination, will not only maximise student enjoyment, but also reduce pressure on services as we go into the winter months. Megan patterson, bbc news. Christmas shopping may have to start earlier than usual this year, following concerns some popular toys could be in short supply. The toy Retailers Association says ongoing problems with Shipping Containers and a lack of Lorry Drivers means its taking longer for products to arrive from overseas. Our business correspondent, katy austin, reports. Weve got our london underground toys, our harry potter toys, some of our train sets. These are all designed in london. Most are sold in the uk by online and High Street retailers, but they are made in the far east. Shipping them over is currently taking twice the time it should. The first reason is the lack of Shipping Containers coming out of china. The second is the lack of Space And Availability on the vessels coming over. And lastly, the most major issue is having trucks from the port deliver straight to us. So at every stage, really, youre finding delays. Every stage, yes. We are now coming up to the crucial Christmas Trading period. The concern for Toy Makers and retailers isnt demand. They think that will be strong. It is whether they have enough of exactly the products people want at exactly the right time. We cant say or rule out that we will have shortages. At the moment were well stocked, but were in september. Our Peak Period starts at The End of october. Gerald says toys will also be more expensive as some of the rising cost of shipping is passed on to customers. The biggest Cost Increase is the containers coming over from the far east. The price before all these issues came about was 900 for a 20 foot container. Were now paying upwards of 8,800. Other products are being affected too. The Devon Warehouse of this online Home And Gardenware retailer is starting to fill up with artificial christmas trees, decorations and lights. They normally begin to arrive as early asjune, but delays mean a lot of uncertainty. For a lot of retailers its going to be quite gappy this year, and some things probably arent going to get here in time to be useful for people this festive season. People who leave it to the last minute might find they havent got quite so much selection. Most Colour Printed Books are shipped in from overseas. That is also taking longer, so waterstones brought in its festive stock extra early. Weve been ordering in much larger quantities and increasing our stockholding in our shops and our warehouse to ensure that we can kind of meet high demand. Some businesses, including john lewis, are chartering extra ships to bring in their festive supplies. That is not an option forfirms like geralds. All he wants for christmas is for his toys to arrive in time for people to buy them. Katy austin, bbc news. Now its time for a look at the weather with owain wyn evans. Hello, everyone. I hope youre doing all right. There is a bit of a split this weekend, weather wise. Today, for many, plenty of dry weather and some sunshine as well. There are some showers around and some patchy rain, however. Tomorrow, some of us seeing a very different thing. We will see heavy outbreaks of rain, but equally a bit of an east West Split Tomorrow more detail on that in just a moment. This is how it is looking today. We have this weak Weaher Front draped across the uk. That is introducing Cloud And Rain as well. Here it is on the Close Up view. Just drifting into Eastern Parts of scotland, slowly moving out of here and then into the north of england, wrapping around western parts of wales, down towards the South West of england. Much of scotland should be dry, if we take a bit of a tour. To the west, breezy, patchy rain, moving into parts of Northern Ireland later as well. Sunny spells here, there is that weatherfront, introducing showery spells of rain, then, across Western Fringes of wales, towards the South West of england. Either side of this, we should see plenty of dry weather, a few isolated showers here or there. Some Mist And Fog this morning, that will continue to clear as we head through the day. Cooler to the north, 15 16 celsius across parts of scotland, and Northern Ireland. The best of those temperatures across south Eastern Parts of england, 22 23 celsius. Moving on through this evening, the Weather Front remains with us, it will pep up, so the rain will turn heavier as we head through tonight, and you can see very slowly it is creeping towards the east. We will see the return of some Mist And Fog patches through this evening, but then tomorrow heavy spells of rain develop, the east West Split i mentioned earlier, you can see it here, so west is best tomorrow. Not completely dry, however, we will see some showers, whereas Eastern Parts of England And Scotland will see heavy spells of rain. Tomorrows top temperatures about 20 celsius. As we look towards the coming week, we have this Ridge Of High Pressure building, not a completely dry story on monday, however, and we will see some cloud around. But more in the way of that brightness most certainly. Turning windy across western parts of scotland, some cloud, patchy spells of rain as well on monday, top temperatures about 20 celsius. As we look towards the middle and The End of this coming week, low pressure moves in, turning less settled, we will keep you posted. That is the forecast, see you soon. Hello this is bbc news. The headlines. Worries over the soaring price of gas. The British Governments holding urgent talks with Energy Industry bosses. It is one of those hidden things that has immense repercussions right the way through the sector and i really do think this is a crisis. Holiday firms say they expect a surge in bookings after Travel Restrictions in england are relaxed. This is what we have been waiting for a long time.
