Including children, in a Drone Strike during their final days in afghanistan. British retailers warn of a possible shortage of some toys this christmas because of Supply Chain problems. For viewers in the uk, Strictly Come Dancing is back and theres controversy as reports suggests that two of the show s professional dancers are refusing to get covid jabs. Hello and welcome if youre watching in the uk or around the world. The British Government is to hold urgent talks with the Energy Industry amid growing concern about a spike in wholesale Gas Prices in the uk. A combination of high global demand and lower solar and Wind Output have been blamed for the price hike. The government says there is no threat to Uk Gas supplies. The Business Secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng, will be talking to gas producers, the national grid, suppliers and the regulator ofgem. Its predicted the typical Gas And Electricity customer is likely to see their Bill Go Up by £139 from october. The high Gas Prices have already led two large Uk Fertiliser plants to close thats important because they produce Carbon Dioxide, a key element of the Meat Production Process leading to concerns about food supplies. Our political correspondent, peter saull, is here. What is going on this weekend . Victoria, lots of high level meetings, 21 on 1 chats that the Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng is going to have with energy suppliers, both large and small, and the operators, ofgem, to try to get to the bottom of how big an impact this is having on the market, what impact it might have on Household Bills as well and whether for example smaller suppliers might be able to absorb these soaring costs of wholesale gas. But as you say there is this Knock On Effect we are starting to see now affecting large parts of the economy, the closure of those two fertiliser plants is really quite major because they produce an awful lot of Carbon Dioxide used across the Food And Drink sector in terms of Preserving Food and packaging, but also on the Meat Production Side of things as well Carbon Dioxide is used as a stunner before animals are slaughtered, so yes, an awful lot to take into account and i think this is a Cross Government Effort now as well, the department for the environment, food and rural affairs and rural affairs also, environment, food and rural affairs and ruralaffairs also, it environment, food and rural affairs and rural affairs also, it says, monitoring the situation. It seems like this is kind of escalating. What does it mean for People Watching . I what does it mean for People Watchin . ~ what does it mean for People Watching . I think the first thing is potentially in the next few weeks| watching . I think the first thing is l potentially in the next few weeks or even days could be some shortages, we are told, of meat products. The british meat Processors Association earlier on saying they believe this is a crisis now and the shelves could run empty pretty soon. Also in terms of energy bills, you may well have already seen your terrace go up if you are an invariable contract. The Energy Cap is there in place, the government is keen to stress, so that people are not paying too much, but that cap is due to rise as well because of the impact of the wholescale limit wholesale Gas Price situation, but they are also keen to stress this a. Issue rather than a Supply Issue, so this is not a case of the lights going out anything like that, so they are very confident there will not be a Supply Issue over the winter, but certainly this price is having an impact. Thank you. Nick allen is Chief Executive of the british meat Processors Association. He explained how the increase in prices was affecting the meat market. It is critical rightly way through this and the Supply Chain and from the meat side, particularly in the Pork And Poultry sectors, c02 is used to humanely slaughter animals and it is also. So there is a potential, as well as shortages, there is a potential to create a massive animal Welfare Problem back on The Farms. Massive animal Welfare Problem back on The Farm on The Farms. Sorry, ust on that oint, in on The Farms. Sorry, ust on that point. In math on The Farms. Sorry, ust on that point, in what way . On The Farms. Sorry, just on that point, in what way . Well, on The Farms. Sorry, just on that point, in what way . Well, we. On The Farms. Sorry, just on that i point, in what way . Well, we wont be able to process point, in what way . Well, we wont be able to process the point, in what way . Well, we wont be able to process the animals be able to process the animals quickly, so those animals will stay back on The Farm and there is already a problem in the Pig Sector where pigs are backing up on The Farm because of the case are Labour Shortages, so this is going to cause enormous problems forfarmers, so thatis enormous problems forfarmers, so that is a horrendous Problem And Challenge for them. On top of that, you know, we use co2 for extending sheu you know, we use co2 for extending Shelf Life through packaging, not just in meat, but in all foods, and at a time when were struggling because of the Haulage Shortages in this country to keep the Supply Chain going, to actually lose Shelf Life and have a shorter Shelf Life on products is going to cause even more disruption, so this is a really Serious Problem for us. So if more disruption, so this is a really Serious Problem for us. Serious problem for us. So if the Business Secretary Serious Problem for us. So if the Business Secretary happen Serious Problem for us. So if the Business Secretary happen to i Serious Problem for us. So if thej Business Secretary happen to be watching right now, what would you need from him . Need from him . Well, i think are really shocked need from him . Well, i think are really shocked that need from him . Well, i think are really shocked that these need from him . Well, i think are really shocked that these two really shocked that these two fertiliser plants can almost get away with shutting down overnight when they are such a critical part of the food Supply Chain, particularly on the back of we had a crisis around co2 in 2018 and they should have been lessons learnt from that, so i think he needs to actually speak to that company and see whether that decision can be reversed or those closures can be delayed and, more to the point, we got through last Years Food Crisis because we knew there was an end to it, it was about the plant shutting down for maintenance. They have just said they are closed indefinitely, so No One knows where they are, really. And if they cannot actually arrive at a deal with that company they need to help the Industry Source Co2 from Somewhere Else because this is going to impact rightly way through from The Farm rightly way through from The Farm rightly way through to the pub where c02 is rightly way through to the pub where co2 is used to make beer, so it will affect your local paint. fik. I think they have got from Somewhere Else . I doubt it. I think they have got similar from Somewhere Else . I doubt it. I l think they have got similar problems on the continent, it is almost an international problem, so it is going to be very hard to find it from Somewhere Else, so it is actually critical, i think, that they find a way of getting these plants reopened again. find they find a way of getting these plants reopened again. The us State Department says it intends to hold talks in the coming days to calm french anger over a new Defence Pact between the united states, the uk and australia. France is upset because the deal involves the cancellation of a contract to supply french designed submarines to the australian navy. In a measure of its frustration, paris has recalled ambassadors to washington and canberra. Courtney bembridge reports. Back injune the two president s sat Side By side in The Sun in the uk. But that warmth has disappeared and, in an unprecedented move, france has recalled its ambassadors to the us and australia. This is why. Its about connecting americas existing allies and partners in new ways. A deal struck earlier in the week between the us, uk and australia for a fleet of nuclear powered submarines. It replaces a multi billion Dollar Deal Australia had signed with france in 2016, and france was only told about it hours before the public announcement, which has infuriated president macron. First came this warning from the foreign minister. Translation i am angry with a lot of bitterness about this cancellation. It is not over. Then the next move. The french embassy in the us tweeted that the decision to recall the ambassadors came from the president directly and reflects the exceptional seriousness of the announcements made on september 15th, which it says constitutes unacceptable behaviour from allies and partners. This is not mostly about the commercial nature or the money. This Submarine Deal that france had signed with australia four years ago was really the underpinning of France Underpinning of Frances Presence in the indo pacific. This is a country, one of the two main European Countries in the region that was conducting freedom of Navigation Operation in the south china sea. This is at a time when the biden administration had said that he wants to work with European Allies to confront chinas assertiveness. The us says france is its oldest ally, and the Defence Secretary has spoken to his french counterpart to try to resolve their differences. It was clear from the discussion that there is still much work to do in terms of our Defence Relationship with france. I mean, more things to work on. That there are opportunities and shared challenges and shared interests that both ministers committed to continue to explore. The Pact Means Australia will become only the seventh nation to operate nuclear powered submarines, and its widely seen as an effort to counter Chinas Influence in the contested south china sea, where it has built up Military Bases on islands and reefs. For its part, china has accused the us, uk and australia of having a Cold War mentality. Courtney bembridge, bbc news. Holiday companies say they expect a surge in bookings after the British Government announced rules around international travel in england were being eased. But there are concerns that scrapping Pcr Tests for people who are Double Jabbed will affect the Countrys Ability to monitor covid variants. Simonjones reports. Half term holidays abroad look set to become simpler and cheaper for many families, to the relief of the travel industry. Its very important for The End of the season. Theres lots of people havent had a holiday for two years. I think its a big boost for the industry, and what weve said all along is the best support we can get from the government is being able to fly again. From 11th october, fully vaccinated travellers returning to england from countries that arent on the Red List will no longer need to take a test before they travel, and from The End of october they wont need an expensive Pcr Test on their return. Itll be replaced by a lateral flow test. Children will be treated the same as vaccinated adults. But if youre not Double Jabbed, it is very different. Youll need to test before you travel back and self isolate at home for ten days, as well as pay for Pcr Tests. Be aware that if youre not vaccinated then im afraid there are by necessity more costs and bureaucracy involved under this system. Travel agents are gearing up for a busy weekend of bookings. This is what weve been waiting for a long time. It takes away all the confusion, and thats been one of our biggest barriers, and one of the biggest reasons why people havent been wanting to book theyre confused. But some scientists have warned that fewer people taking Pcr Tests, which are sent to labs for analysis, could make it harder to identify new variants of the virus being imported into england. At stamford airport, some travellers were concerned. I think its good to keep the testing, in a way. I think its safer for everyone. Yes, we have to live with covid. However, i think its still important to get tested. Anyone thats Double Jabbed should be able to be tested without any be able to travel without any extra tests and things. The new Travel Rules will remain in place until the new year at least. The welsh government says it is considering whether to follow them. Northern ireland has yet to announce any decision. But the scottish Government Wont at this stage change the tests travellers need to take due to what it calls significant concerns about the impact on public health. So simonjones, so simon jones, bbc so simonjones, bbc news. The headlines on bbc news. Worries over the soaring price of gas the British Governments holding urgent talks with Energy Industry bosses. France is recalling its ambassadors to australia and the united states, in protest over a Security Deal which also includes the uk. Holiday firms say they expect a surge in bookings after Travel Restrictions in england are relaxed. For viewers in the uk, Strictly Come Dancing is back. 15 celebrities will be paired with their dancing partners on Bbc One tonight, and then in two weeks the live peformances begin. One former contestant is Dr Ranj singh, an Nhs Consultant Paediatrician and Tv Presenter who took part in 2018. There is this weird dichotomy of excitement and jealousy. Secretly we all want to do it again. Do you really . Absolutely. I had such a good time. It was the single mostjoyous yet difficult experience of my life. And i work on the front line. It was such an incredible experience. There is nothing like it. If you were to do it again what would you do differently . I would love to dance with another boy. I wouldnt be able to dance with my partner, jeanette, because she is moving on, but i would love. I would love to dance with another boy. That is interesting. This is the first series where we will have an all male pairing. What is your view about that . It is fantastic. The audience want it. It is a sign of progression. It is the way the world is going. It is long overdue. We saw a Group Number being danced a couple of years ago, and how much of a positive response that had, and how amazing it was. It is a signal to lgbt people that you matter. You count, you are seen. I think it is really important and whether it is really important and whether it is a. To women, a guy and a girl, two men. It doesnt matter, it is just dance at The End of the day. And contestants have had to withdraw because of covid. You were lucky, you did it before the pandemic, there are so many guidelines the cast have to follow. There are Reports Today on the front page of the Sun Newspaper that suggests. That two of the professional dancers are declining to take a covid jab. What is your view on that, as an Nhs Consultant . Vaccination is not mandatory. It is an offer. We should all be playing our part, doing whatever we can to try to keep everybody safe, not just ourselves, but those around us. There may be legitimate reasons for those people to not be able to have the jab. We have got to understand that. But we have all got a part to play to be as safe as possible. That is notjust about vaccination, it is about being careful around hand hygiene, trying to distance, wearing a mask in enclosed spaces, and all those other things. Our Correspondent Aruna Iyengar is here. How is the bbc and the strictly come Dancing Team responding to these reports in the Sun Newspaper . Obviously they have been jolted by these reports in the newspaper, and this book to them this morning and they said, we dont comment on the speculation around someones covid Vaccination Status and to ensure the safety of everyone on the show. Obviously the programme must have had to jump through hoops to get on air, as have many other Theatrical And Music productions. 13 Million people tuned in at the peak of the last final, which featured Bill Bailey and ot, and that was in december last year, so a huge event on tv. Obviously they are looking forward to getting more dancers on the show and hopefully all will turn out well, but of Course Covid lingers in the background. It certainly does. Lets go back to the news that Holiday Firms in england expect a surge in bookings folloiwing the relaxation of Travel Rules. We can speak now to david child from online Travel Company thomas cook. What difference are using already in terms of Bookings Today . It is fantastic news, terms of Bookings Today . It is fantastic news, both terms of Bookings Today . It 3 fantastic news, both in terms of the industry and those who have been desperate to get some sun this summer. What we are seeing for those who are flocking to us to grab their Half Term getaways, we saw already this week before just on the speculation of October Half Term Booking went up, 200 or three times the level that we have seen in august. It is the confidence people could get away more cheaply and simpler was feeding through, so it is good to see that people are not only looking forward to October Half term, but were also starting to people looking for christmas and new year. We have all had such a difficult year last year, so it is great that people now think they can head to dubai or the caribbean whether christmas getaway. And one thing that would normally happen at this time of year is we would often take a short City Breaks and previously if you had to take two tests to come home and then a test after day to going to paris for the Weekend Or Berlin for a couple of nights might not have been something that was possible, whereas now people are heading to crack off and roam again. They are heading to krakow as well. So it is good people are trying to go to new places and head for someone new, so there are some good deals on offer as well. I think we all deserve a little bit of a break and a bit of an opportunity just to stretch our legs, lay out on a beach, grab a cocktail and enjoy some sun right through the winter. You said there are some good deals out there, but have you also prices up out there, but have you also prices up on some holidays . Ida. Out there, but have you also prices up on some holidays . Out there, but have you also prices up on some holidays . No, there is a lot of capacity. Up on some holidays . No, there is a lot of capacity. So up on some holidays . No, there is a lot of capacity, so clearly up on some holidays . No, there is a lot of capacity, so clearly we up on some holidays . No, there is a lot of capacity, so clearly we are i lot of capacity, so clearly we are not the only country that has been affected by covid, so the hotels in Greece And Spain and now Turkey And Egypt and elsewhere have not had a typical summer, so they have still got rooms they want to sell, they want to have people stay in their hotels, so they are keeping their prices low. We are seeing airlines adding more capacity and more flights into certainly places like Turkey And Egypt, now they are back of the Red List and back available to us. But places like greece that would normally finish in mid october, you would not often be able to get to greece for October Half term, they are extending their Season Injune into november, so theres plenty of space, prices are still really good. We can see that people often trading up, going all inclusive or getting themselves a 5 Star Break at a 4 star price, so there are lots of great deals out there. People can shop around, look for somewhere they may be have not tried before, try someone new and those that are double vaccinated now can really take advantage of this, as Grant Shapps said, simpler and cheaper way to travel. It is as Grant Shapps said, simpler and cheaper way to travel. Cheaper way to travel. It is not our cheaper way to travel. It is not your response cheaper way to travel. It is not your Response Ability cheaper way to travel. It is not your Response Ability becausel cheaper way to travel. It is not | your Response Ability because it cheaper way to travel. It is not i your Response Ability because it is that the government too has changed the rules, but what do you say to those who suggest we are not going to be able to pick up variants now because people dont have to do the pcr when they get back . The because people dont have to do the pcr when they get back . Because people dont have to do the pcr when they get back . The pcr at the Moment Pcr when they get back . The pcr at the moment is pcr when they get back . The pcr at the moment is still pcr when they get back . The pcr at the moment is still in pcr when they get back . The pcr at the moment is still in place, pcr when they get back . The pcr at the moment is still in place, we i pcr when they get back . The pcr at the moment is still in place, we are| the moment is still in place, we are not quite sure when the change will come in, later in october, but we are going to be doing lateralflow tests and those that are positive im sure will lead onto pcr, but we have not seen new variants emerge yet since the Delta Variant and i think the government clearly has taken up as a sign that while it is not perhaps fully evolved, we know we have seen a relatively stable covid situation in the last six months. I think that is a confident sign that lots of countries now our genome sequencing, are testing their own people, so we can see variants emerge. And i am sure if things do change we will see the government introduced perhaps new rules, but for the moment think the great news is that, as Grant Shapps said, it is simpler and cheaper to travel and now with more countries becoming available, particularly for those who are double jab, it is a great opportunity to head out and explore someone new. Haifa opportunity to head out and explore someone new opportunity to head out and explore someone new. How long do you think it is auoin someone new. How long do you think it is going to someone new. How long do you think it is going to be someone new. How long do you think it is going to be before someone new. How long do you think it is going to be before Travel Someone new. How long do you think it is going to be before travel is i it is going to be before travel is back Pre Pandemic Levels . filth. It is going to be before travel is back prepandemic levels . Oh, quite some time back prepandemic levels . Oh, quite some time. Two back prepandemic levels . Oh, quite some time. Two years, back prepandemic levels . Oh, quite some time. Two years, three back prepandemic levels . Oh, quite some time. Two years, three years, | some time. Two years, three years, five years . Some time. Two years, three years, five years . A some time. Two years, three years, five years . A couple some time. Two years, three years, five years . A couple of some time. Two years, three years, five years . A couple of years, i i five years . A couple of years, i think you five years . A couple of years, i think you cant five years . A couple of years, i think you cant underestimate l think you cant underestimate peoples nervousness. We have certainly seen in our Booking Numbers older people attending not to book travel quite as much as they would have done in the past, a lot of our bookings are under a0 fives, younger people and younger families, so there are a lot of people who are still nervous to travel and the more the Vaccination Programme is shown to be a success, with the Booster Jab started for people over 50 right now, so i think people will feel more confident, but certainly Leisure Travel will bounce back quickly. Business travel is a different thing, we have all seen we dont necessarily need to take lots of trips overseas for business, but for leisure we have been desperate to get out of their homes and get away or revisit old places, so i think we will bounce back in and 2023 hopefully well see people bounce back to where travel was in 2018 in previous years, so im confident is coming back, but at a low level and that is why prices are so great right now. Low level and that is why prices are so great right now. Thank you, david child, from so great right now. Thank you, david child, from david so great right now. Time for a look at the weather, heres owain wyn evans. Hello, everyone. I hope youre doing all right. There is a bit of a split this weekend, weather wise. Today, for many, plenty of dry weather and some sunshine as well. There are some showers around and some patchy rain, however. Tomorrow, some of us seeing a very different thing, we will see heavy outbreaks of rain, but equally a bit of an east West Split tomorrow, more detail on that in just a moment. This is how it is looking today. We have this weak Weaher Front draped across the uk, that is introducing Cloud And Rain as well. Here it is on the Close Up view. Just drifting into Eastern Parts of scotland, slowly moving out of here and then into the north of england, wrapping around western parts of wales, down towards the South West of england. Much of scotland should be dry, if we take a bit of a tour. To the west, breezy, patchy rain, moving into parts of Northern Ireland later as well. Sunny spells here, there is that weatherfront, introducing showery spells of rain, then, across Western Fringes of wales, towards the South West of england. Either side of this, we should see plenty of dry weather, a few isolated showers here or there. Some Mist And Fog this morning, that will continue to clear as we head through the day. Cooler to the north, 15 16 celsius across parts of scotland, and Northern Ireland. The best of those temperatures across south Eastern Parts of england, 22 23 celsius. Moving on through this evening, the Weather Front remains with us, it will pepper, so the rain will turn heavier with us, it will pep up, so the rain will turn heavier as we head through tonight, and you can see very slowly it is creeping towards the east. We will see the return of some Mist And Fog patches through this evening, but then tomorrow heavy spells of rain develop, the east West Split i mentioned earlier, you can see it here, so west is best tomorrow. Not completely dry, however, we will see some showers, whereas Eastern Parts of England And Scotland will see heavy spells of rain. Tomorrows top temperatures about 20 celsius. As we look towards the coming week, we have this Ridge Of High Pressure building, not a completely dry story on monday, however, and we will see some cloud around. But more in the way of that brightness most certainly. Turning windy across western parts of scotland, some cloud, patchy spells of rain as well on monday, top temperatures about 20 celsius. As we look towards the middle and The End of this coming week, low pressure moves in, turning less settled, we will keep you posted. That is the forecast, see you soon. Hello this is bbc news.
