The Vaccine Booster Programme will start next week in all parts of the uk. The booster is a third dose to protect against covid and will be given at least six months after the second was adminstered. Care Home Staff and residents will be among Priority Groups as our Health Editor Hugh Pym explains. At a Carpentry Class in surrey for men whove retired, it was clear there was enthusiasm about the prospect of having a booster covid jab. I think that the whole scheme is good, and i think i feel betterfor having myjabs, so, yes, id have it immediately. I always have a Flu Jab once a year, so i cant see that theres going to be any problem having an extra booster. I would have the boosterjab, as i said, but i would like to know more about it. And now itll become a reality, with this Age Group among the first to get a third dose. The announcment coming from the expert vaccine committee. Jcvi advise us that adults who are more vulnerable to severe Covid I9 Disease should be offered a Booster Vaccine in order to maintain a high level of protection through the next few months, through this winter particularly. Officials today used this chart to show how effective vaccines are at preventing people with covid from needing hospital treatment. Among those aged 65 and over, they were more than 90 effective up to nine weeks after a second dose. But they waned slightly the further away you got from that second jab. Medical regulators said it was safe to use az, Pfizer And Moderna as booster jabs, but thejcvi recommended pfizer or a Half Dose of moderna because they got the best immune responses, regardless of what had been given for the first two doses. Though, if there were allergy problems, az could be used. At what point will double jabs start, covid in one Arm And Flu in the other . Double jabs can start now, subject to the availability of both products. And it may not always be the case that it is possible to co administer those two vaccines in every single patient. Sometimes it will be possible. Officials pointed to data showing much lower Covid Death rates among people who have been fully vaccinated, shown here in blue, compared to those who havent been, here in red, especially among the under 70s. But the nhs is braced for some difficult months. Papers from the expert committee, sage, said there was the potential for another large wave of hospitalisations, with one factor being increased numbers returning to work places. Here in croydon, like other hospitals, theyre preparing for a busy time ahead. Perfectly honestly, it feels like winters come pretty early this year, and the real concern is, of course, as we move into winter proper, what the impact might be across the nhs. The message from Health Leaders is that the pandemic is still active, and winter could well be bumpy at times. Hugh pym, Bbc News. Now on Bbc News it s the Travel Show. This week on the show. Upside down in nairobi. The city of loves freewheeling new ideas. And treading carefully in georgias abandoned spaces. Kenya its a Country Bursting with natural beauty, the wildlife here is world beating, the bush is unspoiled and pristine, and the sunsets will take your breath away. Its a bit different in the capital, but hidden in this maze of Dusty Backstreets is something truly special. Welcome to the mighty jumbo circus academy. These are kenyas best known acrobats. In normal times, they would be off touring the world. Thanks to the pandemic, they have been stuck in nairobi for a year and a half. This is probably the most action i have ever seen happening per Square Metre in my entire life. Its incredible. In years gone by, the performers here, from tumblers to contortionists, have travelled across the planet showing off their incredible skills. In 2020, though, thanks to the pandemic, they only had one booking. This year, theyve got nothing, no money coming in whatsoever. The first time we had the booking of the school, people were confused, not knowing when they would come back. The senior acrobats have their own businesses but the young ones, the young generation, the ones that are starting, they have to keep on training but not knowing when. That must be frustrating. Everything is just shut. I bet that is a loss of income for the academy . It is bad for the academy and for the individuals because they depend on this. Everybody, theirfamilies depend on acrobatics, and when they tell us not to come together for practising, something like that, its so difficult for us. Matthias invites me for an early Morning Run to show me how they have been keeping in shape without a show to work towards. And it starts at 5 30am, every single day. A whole country of good runners, yeah . We are runners. Id rather be an acrobat. It must be frustrating for you. Really frustrating, not knowing when this thing will be over. So many restrictions, so that will be very confusing, not knowing when i can try to live a life. Do you think it affects their motivation . It affects their motivation, but these people are really determined to move on with their life and make it count. They train for the new job, but the problem is they dont get any income for that. I wave the runners on their way, bouncing up the road, and i think about how much positive energy they are carrying with them. But if the disruption carries on for much longer, the biggest impact could be on their outreach work. Mightyjumbo runs a number of programmes to help kids in nairobi, not least with acro education service, which pays for childrens schooling. Its a precious resource in a country that has a problem with high unemployment and with poverty. Why do you like coming to the school here . Do you think you are learning a lot here . No rope necessary thats amazing any advice you can give me that you learned here . Like what . There it is nice since the time they have come here, i have seen a big difference, they have a lot more confidence and they are willing to do better. I am very proud because the time they are here, i know they are under care. I know they are in a safe place when i go to myjob, so i am very grateful for this place and the things. And good luck to mighty jumbo for the second half of this year. Ive got everything crossed that bookings start to roll in again soon. Ok, here is our pick of some of the best things to see and do Around The World in the next few weeks. Londons Chelsea Flower show is happening in september this year, for the first time in its history. The organisers claim its the worlds most prestigious horticultural event, and it usually fills with the colours of spring and summer. The change in season was forced by the pandemic, and could mean a much more autumnal field than usual. In recent years, nuit blanche, or white night, has become an Autumn Fixture on the Arts Calendar of paris. Its a citywide celebration of the city, a celebration that goes on from 7pm to 7am on october 2nd. Public transport stays open all night to help you see as much as possible. This year its themed around the outdoors, for obvious reasons. Hundreds of museums across the us throw open their doors for free on September 18th as the annual smithsonian Magazine Museum Day returns. Its not only museums zoos, and cultural centres across all 50 states are included as well. You need to sign up online, and crucially, only us citizens can book tickets. Chinas mid Autumn Festival begins on the 19th of september. Its got a history dating back 3,000 years when the emperors worshipped the moon for a bountiful harvest. Adherents believe the moon is at its brightest during the festival. A great place to see it is beijings beihai park. The crowds heading there like to take a Moonlight Cruise on the lake with locally bought moon cake, and with tea. Still to come on the Travel Show. The big ideas that could clean up paris. And the former asylum exciting americas urban explorers so dont Go Away our next port of call this week finds us in france, which has used lockdown to think again about how our next port of call this week finds us in france, which has used lockdown to think again about how its people work, play, and travel in the capital city. It could end in sweeping car bans, paving the way for more of the same across europe, as we have been finding out. Next up, were crossing to the us and the city of milledgeville in georgia, which used to be home to one of the biggest psychiatric hospitals in the world. In recent times, the half abandoned site has become a honeypot for urban explorers. William lee roberts, who is from the state, has been to take a look. Sprawling, overbearing and derelict, these 200 buildings once made up one of the largest and most notorious State Run psychiatric hospitals in the world. Based in milledgeville, a small town less than 100 miles from atlanta, the central State Hospitals Dark Legacy is infamous with local residents. Founded in the 19th Century as the Georgia State lunatic, idiot and epileptic asylum, a lack of funding and a primitive approach to Mental Health Led to brutal treatments and, at times, deteriorating conditions. Its strange but when i was a little kid and i was misbehaving, my father would threaten me by saying im gonna send you down To Milledgeville and i would shut up. But to be here voluntarily all these years later, it feels a little wrong. A small section of the hospital is still in operation. There are still patients here at central State Hospital over 300 of them and its important to remember that this is still an active hospital. Its very disrespectful to them and to their treatment to try to come out here and either break into the buildings or quote unquote hunt for ghosts. Beyond the working hospital, most of the estate is now in disrepair and in recent years, Dark Tourism has attracted an influx of urban explorers keen to record milledgeville s sinister legacy. But structural damage and Reports of decades old asbestos mean that the interiors of most of the buildings are officially off limits. Roofs have caved in, windows have been boarded up and staircases have collapsed. But perhaps more powerful than the actual buildings are the thousands of graves of former patients a chilling reminder that many people entered milledgeville but never left. So, when you look at the stakes here, they all do have numbers on them, and its sort of a misnomer that we dont know who they all are. We do know every person is whos buried here the numbers were for privacy purposes. Many locals have relatives who either worked at the hospital or were admitted there. For some, not enough is being done to honour their memory. I feel sorry for my Great Grandmother she was in the building right there. If i cant relive and memorialise her and what she did here, at least you could memorialise where she stayed and the hospital she spent her entire life in. Over the years, racism, sexism and what is now viewed as a rudimentary, if not brutal, approach to treating patients with Mental Health issues meant that by the 1960s, the Hospitals Population had swollen to over 12,000 patients. So my Great Grandfather sent his wife, betty stubbs, to central state, and im of the opinion that she had Post Partum Syndrome and had to live here for almost 30 years, either pretending that she was not normal so that she could cope, orjust living in a fog. 1899. 1904. These are the original trustee Reports. 1950, there were 10,000 patients here. Sadly, a lack of staff and resources meant conditions declined rapidly and the asylum became notorious for its mistreatment of those admitted. So this was for a lobotomy Dr Fishers lobotomy picks. They went into The Eye orbital socket of The Eye and deadened the front part of the brain. But it was real brutal, it really i think it hurt more than it helped. Weve come a long way since then, and kari hopes a new museum will remind people how different our approach to Mental Health is today. With fields like psychiatry and psychology, as we learn more, we know more, we can do more. As we start to understand the Brain Chemistry and sort of the human anatomy, we can better help people and help them live successfully, so its important to remember the history of where we came from and how weve continued to grow as a society and in the medical profession. Local authorities now run a tour for those curious about the hospitals dark past. Central State Hospital is georgias oldest and largest state psychiatric hospital. I think our tourfills a gap for local residents in milledgeville because the hospital has been something that has been here for a long, long time. I find that people often have a sense in their own mind of what they think it was like, but when they come, its an opportunity for them to really learn about the size, the scope and the humanity involved in the hospital campus. Well, i think history is important because if you dont know where you came from, youre not going to know where you go in the future, and its extremely important for the people who worked here, for the Family Members that were patients here, and for researchers in the future to know what went on here. The people ive met today have driven home the importance of remembering the patients who lived here and the thousands who died. Acknowledging them and what happened is uncomfortable but to me, it feels like the right thing to do. Well, thats all for this week, but coming up next week were in argentina, exploring a haunting city submerged beneath a lake for 30 years thats now slowly re emerging into the sunshine. After the very wet weather across england on tuesday, conditions look much better for the next couple of days. Thanks to a Ridge Of High Pressure, we should see plenty of dry and sunny weather. But it wont be completely sunny right across the board, there will be a few showers mainly across scotland and Northern Ireland. Thats yesterdays low, clearing away toward scandinavia. This weak Weather Front will bring some showers to scotland and Northern Ireland through the day, but this Ridge Of High Pressure will continue to build in. So, a much better looking day for much of england and for wales, as well. A bit of cloud to start the day across eastern areas, maybe the odd shower, any mist should clear away, too, plenty of sunshine into the afternoon. Same, too, for Eastern Scotland, but northern and western scotland, and into Northern Ireland will see more cloud and a few showers around, so the mid to high teens here, could see highs of 21 22 celsius further south. Now through wednesday night, it stays dry with clear spells across england and wales, allowing some mist and dense Fog Patches to develop. Itll turn a bit cooler, as well, for many areas, i think single figure values across central and northern areas, particularly under any clear skies. And well continue with just 1 2 showers across the north, thanks to this Weather Front. But you can see the Ridge Of High Pressure will be a little bit stronger, more dominant across the country on thursday. So i think thursdays actually shaping up to be the driest and sunniest day of the week across the board. Well start off with that Mist And Fog around, quite a fresh feel to things but with all the sunshine, temperatures will begin to rise into the afternoon, allowing a bit of fair Weather Cloud to bubble up here and there. Top temperatures 22 23 celsius across central, southern, and eastern areas. A bit more cloud, though, starting to push into the northwest of the country, and that heralds a change. A new area of low pressure in this Weather Front will be sweeping into Western Areas on friday. So itll be turning breezy up and down the west coast, around Irish Sea areas and towards western scotland, Northern Ireland, western england, and wales, some Heavy Rain here but actually, central and eastern england, Eastern Scotland should stay dry all day with some sunny spells. It will be a breezier day for all, particularly across northern and Western Areas. Where we have the rain, then, mid teens, ithink, the best further east in the sunshine, again itll feel very pleasant, may be 21 23 celsius. Into the weekend, then, weve got some complicated areas of low pressure, a bit of uncertainty to the detail of the forecast. But it looks like low pressure wants to be nearby, so theres always the chance of some Cloud And Rain both saturday and sunday, and a little bit of sunshine, too. Welcome to Bbc News.
