Happen future generations on the line. If happen future generations on the line. ,. ,. , the tough questions continue for the us Secretary Of State on the us Pull Out from afghanistan. Who is responsible . Who made the Decisions on This . Was it the President Of The United States . Ultimately, the president makes the decision. Thats correct. Also in the uk, prime Minister Boris Johnson says all the adults over 50 will be getting a third booster shot, and we will look. The third dose of six shot, and we will look. Lets begin the hour talking about Climate Change. New bbc Global Research reveals a significant increase in the number of days temperatures around the world are hitting 50 Degrees Celsius 122 degrees in fahrenheit. In other words, the world is seeing far more Heat'>Extreme Heat. Since the 1980s, the number of 50 degree days has tripled. Back then, there were eight days a year on average. In the past decade, weve seen 26. Temperatures of 50 Degrees Celsius happen most often in the middle East And Gulf regions. But they are now being recorded in more areas of the world than ever before. North africa has seen them with increasing frequency in recent years. And here we can see what happened This year. Canada hit a Record High of 49 degrees, italy reached a record of 48 degrees. And the bbc is exploring the impact of This Heat'>Extreme Heat in a series called life at 50 Degrees Celsius. First, lets go to nigeria. Peter okwoche reports. The use of Fossil Fuels worldwide has had a devastating impact on nigerias climate. The country suffers from severe droughts in the north, and Flash Floods in the south. When i was a kid, living was not like This, the weather was not like This, so i think that life is now going to end. But nigeria is also a major producer of oil with a particular emission problem. This is how they flare the gas. The inhabitants of This land are suffering with abject poverty. Flaring is the process of burning the Natural Gas that is released when oil is extracted from the ground. The process is a large source of Greenhouse Gases and a major contributor to Climate Change in nigeria. It is also illegal in the country, yet about Two Million nigerians live within four kilometres of a gas flare, including joy and her children. These are my children. Translation the government should lead efforts to end Gas Flaring in the Oil Industry and, hopefully, that will significantly reduce the Heatwave and associated health hazards. Nigerias economic development is highly dependent on oil revenue, yet the industry is making it one of africas largest emitters of Greenhouse Gases and, until the government fulfils its promise to end Gas Flaring by 2030, the countrys landscape, and the lives and livelihoods of millions likejoy, remain at risk. Pakistan, Bangladesh And India are most at risk of catastrophic Heat events if Climate Change targets are missed. These can cause respiratory problems, Heat'>Exhaustion And Heat stroke. Lets go to Pakistan Farhatjaved has This report from the countrys largest city. Karachi home to more than 16 Million people, one of the biggest and hottest cities in the world, and its residents are suffering. This mother of five is struggling to cope with the searing Heat. There is no way she can afford air conditioning. In 2015, they endured a 45 Degrees Celsius Heat wave. 1,200 people died from Heat'>Dehydration And Heat stroke, and This year the temperature is nearly that high again. Here in the heart of karachi, it is almost unbearable to be standing out in the street. It is only 11 oclock and The Sun is Beating Down and the pollution makes it even worse. Some here wonder how long they can go on like This. Heatstress happens when the body can no longer cool down through sweating. It can cause organ failures and death. By the next century, more than A Billion people will be affected by it if global warming continues at the current level. Roop singh is climate Risk Adviser at the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre with more on This issue. Extreme Heat is the Silent Killer. It is one of the deadliest as asters that we observe, and This increase in 50 degrees temperatures is going to have a huge impact on the world. Often times, Heat'>Extreme Heat is the Silent Killer because we dont see the same images that we see when there is a tropical cyclone or there is floods, we dont see the impact like peoples homes being washed away, but the people who die from Heat'>Extreme Heat are already very vulnerable, so they are the people who already have pre existing conditions. And often times they die alone in their home, so thats a huge issue that we at the Red Cross Red Crescent are trying to shy a light on, and one of the biggest Issuesis Light on, and one of the biggest issues is that there is very little research when Heat'>Extreme Heat becomes dangerous. What we need is more research, but then we can also have things like early Warning Systems, so once we know that at 50 degrees or at 45 degrees, Heat really starts becoming a health issue, we can have an early Warning System in place so that we can warn people of the impacts of Heat'>Extreme Heat that is imminent and then you can also have services set up during that time period. So whether thats disturbing water, whether that is reducing the time that youre out in the day when it is hottest, whether it is having the Cooling Centre that is open, people can go to sort of have some time in air conditioning, that really helps to reduce the impact of Heat'>Extreme Heat distributing water. Now, lets look at how Climate Change affects the severity of natural disaster. Hanan razek explains. From scorching Heat waves to wildfires to floods, we now know that Climate Change is already happening right here, right now. This Heat'>Extreme Heat can lead to more frequent Natural Disasters and it can also make places unfit for humans to live in. It is believed that by 2050, more than 140 Million people will have to leave their homes due to Climate Change. Almost all countries of the world are signed up for the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015, which aims to keep the rise in global temperature well below 2 degrees This century. We now live in a warmer world that keeps getting hotter and hotter, so the only hope is that nations fulfil their pledges to cut Carbon Emissions to reach Net Zero by 2050. You may have recognised the pictures used at the start of that report. They were of the wildfires in australia in 2019 the worst Bushfire Season on record. Dozens of people died, more than Ten Million hectares of land burned and over A Billion animals are estimated to have died, with many species pushed close to extinction. Professor Lesley Hughes is from the australia climate council. The report released a few weeks ago had one little silver lining, which is it made it very clear that if we reduce emissions rapidly and deeply within the next few years, and certainly before 2030, we have a chance of leveling off global temperatures by the middle of the century. 720 to 30 years time, in the lifetimes of us, and to then move towards a safer Operating Space for humanity so, 20 to 30 years. Equally, it was clear that if we dont get emissions under control This decade, global temperatures will continue to rise, these extremes will continue to be eventually something that neither humans nor any other species on the planet can adapt to. Next to washington. Us secretary of State Antony Blinken has faced a second day of tough questions on Capitol Hill, defending the decision to withdraw from afghanistan. Mr blinken appeared in person before the senate foreign relations committee, made up of both Republican And Democrat senators. Once again, he faced a wave of criticism particularly from the republican side. Heres marco rubio. I dont know how its possible. If, in fact, the people in charge of our Foreign Policy did not see all of these factors and conclude that there was a very real possibility of a very rapid collapse, then weve got the wrong people making Military And Diplomacy Decisions in our government. The overall assessment of the community was that after a complete us military withdrawal, that could potentially, in the worst case scenario, lead to the taliban Capturing Kabul within a year or two. So thats back in february, and that was more or less where things stood in the winter and into the spring. By july. And youre exactly right that the situation was deteriorating, as the taliban continued to make progress on the ground. The Intelligence Community did not say that the Countrywide Collapse of all meaningful resistance would be likely to occur in a matter of days. And you referenced chairman milley, as i did earlier. Nothing that he saw, that i saw, that We Saw suggested that This Government And Security force would collapse in a matter of 11 days. You remember the images on the day the final us troops left afghanistan taliban troops, wearing us military equipment, admiring the aircraft which us troops had left behind. Heres republican senator ronjohnson. So the administration continued with their plans of withdrawal, of evacuation, of surrender, knowing the taliban would be in control of 80 Billion worth of sophisticated equipment at The End of that, correct . I mean, did that discussion ever come up, in terms of maybe that wouldnt be a good idea, leaving all that equipment behind, as we bug out of afghanistan . That assessment came in july. That assessment came injuly. Much of the that assessment came injuly. Much of the equipment, and again i will defer of the equipment, and again i will defer to of the equipment, and again i will defer to my colleagues at the pentagon, who are more expert in This than pentagon, who are more expert in This than i pentagon, who are more expert in This than i am, much of that equipment was made inoperable, other Pieces Equipment was made inoperable, other pieces of equipment was made inoperable, other pieces of open will come inoperable, because pieces of open will come inoperable, because theres no ability on the part of because theres no ability on the part of the because theres no ability on the part of the taliban to maintain it. None part of the taliban to maintain it. None of part of the taliban to maintain it. None of it. Part of the taliban to maintain it. None of it, to my knowledge, poses a strategic none of it, to my knowledge, poses a strategic threat to us or afghanistans neighbours. There are many concerns about what a taliban government could mean for global security. Many fear that afghanistan could become a base for terrorists once again. Heres Republican Mitt Romney. In your view, in yourview, mr in your view, mr secretary, in yourview, mr secretary, has in your view, mr secretary, has the taliban abandoned their Sympathy And Collaboration with groups like alqaeda, the Haqqani Network . Do they continue to have the same aim and are they of like spirit . 0r they continue to have the same aim and are they of like spirit . Or has that relationship been severed . The relationship has not been severed, and It Relationship has not been severed, and it is relationship has not been severed, and it is a relationship has not been severed, and it is a very open question as to whether and it is a very open question as to whether their views and the relationship has changed in any kind of definitive way. Antony blinken as try to has repeatedly tried to deflect responsibility away from the bite in it ministration. He has tried to blame the former admits ration of Donald Trump, which initiated the Withdrawal Process with that though deal in 2020. On that, heres a Democrat Congressman speaking to the bbc. But i disagree with the biden administration, and i said so yesterday, is that i do not believe that President Biden was obliged to pick up where President Trump left off. Yes, it is true we would have needed, with our allies in nato, to reinforce the very small remaining garrison that we had in afghanistan, but i think that would have been worth the manageable cost, and what we have now is absolute Disaster And Tragedy for the afghan people, and i believe for American Western Interests. ,. , believe for American Western Interests interests. The question of responsibility interests. The question of responsibility is interests. The question of| responsibility is something interests. The question of responsibility is something both the biden previous Trump Administration obviously want to avoid, regardless the taliban are for whatever reasons very much back in charge. They ruled the country once before they came to power in 1992 they murdered This man. He had until only a few weeks before been the president of afghanistan. His daughter has been speaking to the bbc. I afghanistan. His daughter has been speaking to the bbc. Speaking to the bbc. I think the lack of accountability speaking to the bbc. Into day two of This to and fro with Antony Blinken and those on Capitol Hill for the what are you making of the latest instalment . What struck me at the beginning was that the latest instalment . What struck me at the beginning was that the l the latest instalment . What struck. Me at the beginning was that the top committee members, the democratic chair and the ranking republican, both said This had been a fatally flawed evacuation or a fatally flawed evacuation or a fatally flawed and to the war. They both supported an end to the war it was donein supported an end to the war it was done in a right way, but This had been the wrong way. Of course, were they separated, and were most partisan difference was, was that the democrats largely put a lot of the democrats largely put a lot of the blame on mr trumps deal with the blame on mr trumps deal with the taliban and brought it now to 20 years of failure, while the republicans focused on the failure of This administration, another thing that struck me, and you played marco rubios quote there, is that others agreed with him, heavyweight Republican Mitt Romney and also senior democrats, tim kaine, also both said they simply did not believe the claim by Mr Blinken and the administration that there had been no indication of such a rapid collapse. They said the signs were there and that it should have been handled as a serious probability in terms, possibility in terms of planning, and then another thing that struck me was the republican senator rand paul, who was a fierce advocate of ending the afghan war and has been fiery and outspoken for quite some time. He was very subdued. He was said, sort of shaking his head, i cannot imagine it ending This way with 80 Million of Military Women in the hands of the taliban, and he also said to Mr Blinken, that strike against Isis K, did you hit Isis K or did you hit an Aid Worker which has been reported . And he pressed that at some length and said, if you did the latter that creates terrorists, and Mr Blake and said that that that was under review. ,. , said that that that was under review. . ,. , review. Apart from these heavyweight exchan. Es review. Apart from these heavyweight exchanges between review. Apart from these heavyweight exchanges between the review. Apart from these heavyweight exchanges between the secretary review. Apart from these heavyweight exchanges between the secretary of i exchanges between the Secretary Of State and the most senior senators, where does This Process Lead . The chairman where does This Process Lead . Tue chairman said where does This Process Lead . Tte chairman said at where does This Process Lead . Tt2 chairman said at The End of the event, he said they were going to, basically, the congress has been misled over the past 20 years about what was ackley going on in afghanistan, and if we dont want something like This to happen again, we have to understand how that happened. And we have to change it. So the answer in terms of This committee and i think the house foreign affairs committee, both of which are led by democrats, is that they are going to brought in This investigation out into the whole question of the afghan war and what the us policy was and how it was handled. There are three other committees on top of This one who are going to be making their own investigations, starting with the withdrawal and what went wrong there and some of them will be broadening out as well. Practically speaking, a lot of the senators on both sides of the iowa very concerned about those who had been left behind. A lot of detailed questions about the evacuation and what the State Department was doing to get out the americans, but especially those allies who had stood with the us effort over the 20 years, and so there will be i think a continuing focus on that full to Mr Lincoln gave them some details about what was going on, he talked about working to gather with them, and have constituents try to get people out, so that will be another major focus. It includes boosterjabs for Over 50s as well as vaccinating older children. There are also contingency measures if the Health Service in england comes under extreme pressure. Well go through it all in detail. First, heres the Prime Minister. We are confident in the vaccines that have made such a difference to our lives. And we are now intensifying that effort, offering jabs to 12 to 15 year olds on the advice of the chief medical officers, who have given that advice based on the health, Well Being and educational prospects of the children themselves. And for Over 50s and the Under 50s who are at risk, or more at risk, we are now motoring ahead with the Booster Programme, a third dose six month after your second dose, and so that is going to mean we are going to be building even higher walls of immunisation, of Vaccine Protection in This country. Lets go through that plan for Booster Doses. They will be offered to all Over 50s, adults with underlying Health Conditions and front Line Health Care workers. A single third dose will be given at least six months after the second, and will most likely be the pfizer vaccine. The plan is the same for the uks four nations england, scotland, wales and northern ireland. And This will happen at the same time as the Roll Out of one dose of pfizer for 12 to 15 year olds. The Booster Programme is happening because of concern about waning immunity. Heres the health secretary. There is evidence that the protection offered by Covid 19 Vaccines Protection offered by Covid 19 vaccines reduces overtime, particular vaccines reduces overtime, particular order people, who are at greater particular order people, who are at greater risk. And so Booster Doses are in greater risk. And so Booster Doses are in important way of keeping the virus are in important way of keeping the virus under are in important way of keeping the virus under control for the long ternr~ thats the plan for boosterjabs across the uk. Weve also had This, a plan for Tackling Covid during Autumn And Winter in england. Theres a Plan A, which focuses on vaccines. It includes the boosters and Roll Out for 12 to 15 year olds weve talked about, as well as a push for the unvaccinated to getjabbed. Theres also a Plan B, to be activated if the Health Service begins to struggle, where the public would be encouraged to act more cautiously, Vaccine Passports could be used for mass events, and face coverings could be legally mandated in some places. Borisjohnson was asked what circumstances would mean moving from Plan A to Plan B. There are all sorts of data that we will continue to study, as we have throughout the pandemic, in deciding what the risks are, what the state of the disease is, well keep you updated about where we are full to give her the exact state of things at the moment, and we are confident we can proceed with Plan A, but i think what i would stress about Plan B is that it contains a number of different shots in the locker. And you would not necessarily play them all at once, far from you would not necessarily play them all at once, farfrom it. You would want to do things in a graduated way. Now, i want to turn to haiti. A prosecutor there has opened the case against the Prime Minister, alleging he was involved in the assassination of the president back injuly. This is the former president. He was shot at his private residence in a suburb of the Capital Port au prince. His death plunged haiti into a deep political crisis, and This latest news may do the same. This is extraordinary. It truly is. This is extraordinary. It truly is. This was already This is extraordinary. It truly is. This was already an This is extraordinary. It truly is. This was already an incredibly l This is extraordinary. It truly is. This was already an incredibly murky and confusing and tangled tale involving former Military Personnel from colombia, who believed they were working as Security Officials in haiti, who were being accused of being mercenaries, 44 people arrested so far, and now the finger of suspicion being pointed at the new Prime Minister himself. The suggestion being that the judge new Prime Minister himself. The suggestion being that thejudge had investigated should investigate further his role, because theres been some kind of Phone Call made between him and one of the key suspects, who subsequently disappeared after the assassination, as you say could absolutely turn every as you put it all together and contribute in further to the crisis. Nevertheless, i think in the eyes of so many parts of the International Community, the international organisations working, ngos, see This as at least being carried out along the right lines, that the investigations are being done properly. We should not go much further in This conversation without saying the accused has said there are diversionary tactics at plate intended to so discontent and stop justice from happening, without actually referring to the accusations against him. Just. Uickl accusations against him. Just cuickl if accusations against him. Just quickly if you accusations against him. When we come back, we will be talking about This Drug Tiger to an, which some people have been touting as a treatment for covid, despite there being no evidence This drug ivermectin. Hello there. Well, it was certainly a Wash Out across parts of england today. We saw over a Months Worth of rainfall in a few spots in East Anglia in the last 12 hours. Its all courtesy of This area of low pressure which affected the majority of england through the day, slowly clearing out into the north sea, taking the Heavy Rain with it, a Legacy Ofjust a few showers and some cloud across eastern england. And there will be just one or two showers, i think, Peppering Northern and western parts of scotland, but elsewhere should be dry. But because of all the rain, certainly for england and wales, its going to be quite muggy, misty and damp. Further north, well see temperatures dropping to single figures under clear skies. 0therwise quite mild in the south. Now into wednesday, and indeed into thursday, This ridge of high pressure will build, and thatll settle things down quite nicely and we should see quite a bit of sunshine around. So the middle part of the week is actually looking like being the best part of the week with regards to dry and sunny weather around. Now, it could start quite grey and murky for many areas for wednesday, one or two showers across the Far East of england. Could see the odd Weather Front there. Maybe This Weather Front bringing some showers to northern and Western Scotland and into northern ireland, but elsewhere it will be dry with increasing amounts of sunshine into the afternoon. Temperatures responding 21, maybe 22 degrees. Otherwise the high teens for most. Thursday, ithink, looking like being the driest and sunniest day of the week for most of us. Could start off with some mist and dense fog patches around, which tend to clear, allowing for some sunny spells to develop. Bit of cloud into the afternoon. Signs of It Turning a bit breezier and cloudier across the far northwest ahead of This new Weather Front, but it could turn quite warm in the south and the east. We could see highs around 23 degrees. But then its all change as we head on into friday. A new Look Weather System pushing in from the west will introduce stronger winds, cloud, outbreaks of rain, mainly to western areas. I think its Western Scotland, northern ireland, into western england and wales which will see the rain. Eastern parts of scotland, and certainly eastern england, will stay dry all day with some sunny spells, but its going to be a blustery day for all, particularly in the northwest, as that Weather Front moves in. Temperatures here, mid to high teens. Again, with some sunshine in the southeast, we could see 20 22 celsius. Bit of uncertainty with the details into the weekend, but it does look like lower pressure wants to be nearby, some Weather Fronts around too, so its going to be quite a mixed picture, i think, both saturday and sunday quite a bit of cloud around, bit of sunshine, too, but there will always be a threat of rain. Stay tuned to the forecast. Hello, im ros atkins. This is 0utside source. Let s turn to afghanistan, where two senior taliban leaders have gone missing from public view, sparking rumours about in fighting within the new government. The top taliban leader, mullah hibatullah akhundzada, has not been seen in public since the taliban seized control of afghanistan a month ago. Meanwhile, mullah abdul Ghani Baradar . The deputy Prime Minister, has also disappeared from view. Let s focus on baradar. He was a key figure in the Peace Talks with the us. And he was widely expected to get the taliban topjob. Instead, he was made deputy Prime Minister. And in the last week there were rumours he had been killed or badly injured in a fight with another senior taliban figure. The taliban have denied This and on monday a spokesperson released This audio recording. There has been using the media about my death. Over the past few nights i have been away on trips. Wherever i am at the moment, we are all fine, all my brothers and friends. The media always publish fake propaganda. Therefore, reject bravely all those lies, and i 100 confirm to you there is no issue and we have no problem. A lot of information coming out of afghanistan and a lot of it difficult to confirm. But two sources have told the Bbc Pashto Service that there was a verbal altercation between Mullah Baradar and Khalil Haqqani last week in kabul. This is Khalil Haqqani. Hes head of the Haqqani Network, which has been credited with some of the most violent attacks that have occurred in afghanistan in recent years. The two leaders apparently disagreed over the formation of a new government and the talibans caretaker cabinet. And after the argument Mullah Baradar supposedly went to kandahar in despair. Forming a Government Under these Government Under these circumstances, i think you would expect there to be tensions. Just how serious those tensions are is a question we do not know the answer to. I dont think the taliban are at serious risk of fragmentation. I think the more serious risk comes from forced discipline, there are lots of reports of their forces abusing the population, sometimes they even admit that there are issues with forced discipline. The more concerning issue, a real issue in my mind, is the issue of demilitarisation, they have a lot of fighters that dont have any fighting to do. What will happen to them . Will the taliban be able to absorb them into the administration . That means giving jobs to people who do not qualify for them as a way of rewarding them for the fight. If they do that, there wont be enough jobs to go around and some portion of the force has to be demobilised at a time when jobs are incredibly scarce in the country. That is a more dangerous problem than expected tensions at the top leadership, between the Haqqani Network and the Southern Taliban and i think they are expected but they will not end p are expected but they will not end up in serious actions. When it comes to certain issues there are differences of opinion. For example, regarding the issue of connections with alqaeda, hosting foreigners, there are many experts who argue that the Haqqani Network have closer ties with the foreign fighters than the southern Leaning Taliban and one issue could be, the point of difference could be how that should be resolved. I think also with regard to how much flexibility to show to ensure international recognition to appease the International Community could be another issue. I do not see deep ideological differences regards the future vision of afghanistan but i do see differences and i expect differences when it comes to matters of tactics, relationships with foreign fighters and with the world. We appreciate you joining us. Thanks Forjoining Us. In the us, a drug called ivermectin is being touted as a way of treating and preventing Covid 19 despite a lack of evidence to back This up. This is one of the worlds most popular Podcast Hosts joe rogan. It turns out i got covid, so we immediately threw the Kitchen Sink at it, antibodies, ivermectin, prednisone, everything. Ivermectin is cheap. It s widely available. Its makers won the 2015 Nobel Prize for medicine for how it treats parasitic diseases in humans. It s also used as a dewormerfor horses. And the advice from the us Food And Drug administration the fda is clear while there are approved uses for ivermectin in people and animals, it is not approved for the Prevention Or Treatment of Covid 19. By The End of august, the fda S Language had evolved. It tweeted you are not a horse. You are not a cow. Seriously, y all. Stop it its intervention was prompted by an increase in sales of ivermectin. This is one Pet Shop Manager in texas. We typically sell maybe ten of those in a month. But in the past month we have probably sold 50 to 100. We do not know if that is what they are using it for. Evidently the fda has a theory. So does nbc s ben collins. In a Twitter Thread he promised to explain how people started eating horse goo. He wrote Anti Vaxxers started imploring Each Other to go to pet stores, claiming the horse and People Ivermectin are the same. They started sharing tips on how to eat the gel kind. They started hoarding it. That is called equine paste dewormer, and it comes in an ace flavour. And look at This according to the us national poison Data System there was a jump in reported exposure cases from july to august from 133 to 459. In other words these are people who ve taken ivermectin and become ill. And the fda says This. We ve identified multiple concerning cases who required medical treatment and were hospitalised after using Ivermectin Products to treat Covid 19. Some of these products were intended for animal use, others for human use. It seems either the distinction between the products for humans and the products for animals is not registering or some people dont mind. And to understand why ivermectin has become bound up in the pandemic, we need to go back to last year. To This study published in april which showed that high ivermectin doses prevented the virus from being replicated in test tubes. However, researchers didnt test the drug for treating or preventing Covid 19. But that planted the seed of an idea. And then This is Dr Pierre Kory Founder of the front Line Covid 19 critical Care Alliance talking to a us Senate Committee in december. If you look at these safe and low cost agents, it seems like a No Brainer that you should try it. We have This data, it s showing that we have an effective treatment against This pandemic. But the authorities say there is no such data. Pierre kory s alliance has been a prominent backer of ivermectin. A number of its doctors have appeared in the us media. And these pictures are from texas in april The Alliance claimed that ivermectin has high activity against Covid 19 despite there being no clear proof that it does. Pierre kory was interviewed by conservative News Outlets including fox news. And then This was injune. Spotify s big signing, joe rogan, also interviewed Pierre Kory who described himself as the world s foremost expert on ivermectin. It s fair to say that Assessment Isn T universal. But by the summer, the message about ivermectin was having an impact. Google searches for the drug were increasing. And people were turning to online Health Services some of which have connections to a group called american frontline doctors. If they sound familiar they were the people behind This video which Donald Trump retweeted last year it promoted hydroxycholoroquine, another unproven drug for Covid 19. But despite the lack of credibility of those promoting it, despite the lack of evidence, you can still find Ivermectin Being enthusiastically endorsed. One recent example is australia s former wimbledon Tennis Champion pat cash. I have been taking ivermectin since the beginning of the year, for a year and a quarter. We know that it works, we know that it is a medicine and go ahead and fact check me, all you like. Ok, i will. That s not true. We Don T know it works. Pat cash went on. I have been in the worst areas around the world and i have not come close to getting covid. That, though, is pat Cashs Experience rather than proof the drug works. But his perspective is mirrored in the us, where demand for ivermectin remains. Heres the Chicago Sun times with the headline. The patient, who was an anti mask campaigner, has since died. But This isn Tjust People Making demands of doctors or going to a Pet Shop to buy dewormer. Some doctors appear to be on board. Data for august shows that over 88,000 prescriptions for ivermectin were written in one week. Typically, 3,600 prescriptions are given. That s after the fda S Advice and happened despite available research suggesting no benefit. On that available research, the New York Times tells us a recent review of 1a Ivermectin studies concluded none provided evidence of the drug s ability to prevent covid, improve patients conditions or reduce mortality. Another 31 studies are underway to test the drug. Or we can listen to merck, which is the company that makes it. Back in february 2021, it put out a statement that left little room for doubt. It says there is no scientific basis for a potential Therapeutic Effect against Covid 19 from pre clinical studies no meaningful evidence for clinical activity or clinical efficacy in patients with Covid 19 disease and a concerning lack of Safety Data in the majority of studies. That s not enough for some. And its clear that many of those who are turning to ivermectin despite a lack of evidence are turning away from the Covid Vaccines despite a lot of evidence. Aaron blake of the Washington Post explains. The people who have pushed This the most strongly are a pretty familiar cast of characters. There are many of the same people who have been casting doubt on the efficacy of the vaccines or the safety of the vaccines. All of which means that as Case Numbers in the us have risen through the summer, so has demand for ivermectin. Its a story about americans response to covid, but its also about the erosion of trust in politics and science. And how that erosion has led some americans to conclude that a Horse Dewormer is their best chance of fending off the virus. Jennifer reich is a Sociology Professor and author of the book calling the shots why parents reject vaccines. Shejoins me from denver, colorado. Thank you for being with me. It is important to say that distrust in relationships between governments and Pharmaceutical Companies and in the medical process started long before Covid And Covid does not necessarily create new problems but it absolutely magnifies the ones we have and distrust of the systems is one of those problems that has been with us for a while and has been magnified in new and powerful and sometimes life threatening ways. Tt sometimes life threatening ways. It does not sound like you are surprised that some people might be turning to This drug rather than the traditional roots, like the vaccine . I am surprised This is a drug that became the drug of choice but we have seen This with hydroxychloroquine and other types of medications that have some early signal of holding some promise and that are adopted and promoted as ways of arguing against mainstream medicine, arguing against vaccines and arguing that individuals can take their health in their own hands and find ways to solve or prevent diseases by themselves without following Expert Advice are relying on public systems to help. Gieeh on public systems to help. Given what ou on public systems to help. Given what you are on public systems to help. Given what you are saying, on public systems to help. Given what you are saying, jennifer, i on public systems to help. Given what you are saying, jennifer, it| what you are saying, jennifer, it begs the question, what could you do about This . To push back at people drawing these conclusions . Rebuilding trust is a long process and we should all start soon because we are seeing declining confidence in vaccines long before covid and it has been exaggerated in many ways and we are now in a situation where we are depending on vaccines that are created by for Profit Pharmaceutical companies in partnership with governments around the world that are fully funded by science in ways that have led to amazing results in record time. But there is a process by which Making Transparent of the relationships between individuals, the companies, the governments and the outcomes is really helpful to consumers. For example, the manufacture of ivermectin, arguably they stand to make some profit and they have no Covid Vaccine and yet the distrust of those companies is really powerful and creates a through line or individuals identify ways that they feel they can solve This independently and that kind of independence becomes very compelling. How we start to bring people back into a process, a scientific review process, is important and seeing that standard of care based on tests, based on research, that is systematic and that the researchers do not have a conflict of interest, that is increasingly important. After 1m days, Brendon Prince is home. With nearly 4000 kilometres under his belt, the former schoolteacher has paddled his way clockwise around Mainland Britain to raise awareness of sea safety. He has navigated calm waters with stunning scenery, but it has not all been plain sailing. Unpredictable Summer Weather slowed him down and he has also had to steer through busy shipping lanes. To see 200 dolphins, seals, swimming toward you, these things are immense. Seven years ago as an off duty lifeguard, he tried but could not save the lives of three people in cornwall. The tragic memory drives him on. The effect of that for those people for decades to come was catastrophic and that for me, i cant. I just dont want to see that happen to other people. Seem to be very hypocritical in This restaurant, one of the most expensive in the united states. It was seen to be massively out of touch with normal californians and that is why the Recall Bid gained momentum. There are several candidates in This, some quite bizarre, you read their statements and they say things like, love you or can you dig it . Perhaps Gavin Newsom initially maybe did not take This seriously and then we have Larry Elder, who emerged as a Front Running republican to replace him and he is a well known conservative Talk Show Host with many Views Anathema to many liberal californians and that is where Gavin Newsom, where things have been looking dicey, but as when his Election Campaign got focus and momentum. We have seen over the past few days a massive bid to make that happen, we have had President 0bama on the airwaves campaigning for Gavin Newsom and yesterday we had President Biden in Long Beach telling californians of the eyes of the nation and the eyes of the world or on you. We wait to see what happens next but his power here has been pretty good until we had that event in the french laundry when people really focused on what he was doing and there has been a huge amount of criticism. This election is going on even before the polls close, which will happen at hpm local time. Youre already getting claims from prominent republicans and people i have met at rallies saying the only way that larry will not win This recall is if there are shenanigans and if there is an action fraud. Youre already hearing repeated unfounded claims of fraud at the poles before they have even close. How interesting. Have we heard from Governor Newsoms rivals that they will perhaps not accept the result . We have not had a definitive answer but when people like Larry Elder and President Trump have been talking in the Run Up to the selection, saying the Run Up to the selection, saying the only way the democrats will win here is if there are shenanigans and fraud at the polls, so we are hearing those national unfounded claims we heard in 2020. Thanks for watching and i will see you soon. This is bbc news, im clive myrie. The headlines at 8pm. Covid boosterjabs for anyone over the age of 50 begin a Roll Out next week as the Prime Minister warns the situation is in some ways more challenging than This time last year. Covid is still out there, and the disease sadly still remains a risk, but im confident that we can keep going with our plan. And there is a Plan B for England Vaccine passports, a return of mandatory masks even the work from Home Rule are all an option if the nhs struggles to cope This winter. I think the toolkit is the right way to go. I think covid is going to be something that we have to live with, very much like we live with flu. Id rather we take every action that we possibly could to minimise the cases. As we enter the autumn with more cases, more hospitalisations
