The Anti Immigration Hungarian prime Minister Victor 0rban meets pope francis in budapest. And clash of the Titans Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton Spin out of the italian grand prix. And coming up this hour a Round Up of the latest sporting news, thats in sportsday. Britains eighteen year old Emma Raducanu has won the Us Open in one of the most dramatic victories in modern tennis. She beat nineteen year old Leylah Fernandez of canada in two sets six four, six three. Raducanu only made it into the tournament as a qualifier, but she won the title without dropping a single set. Shes the first british woman to win a grand Slam Singles Title in 44 years. Heres our sports correspondentjoe wilson. The borough of queens on a sunny day, and the extraordinary progress of one young woman. Shes been absolutely amazing this whole tournament. She has a lot of energy. Shes so composed and. Ruthless. Shes going to smash it. You know who theyre talking about. Well, there were two teenagers in the Us Open final canadian Leylah Fernandez at the top of the screen. As early as the second game, we saw intense rallies and we saw Emma Raducanu prevailing here. Both players settled immediately to display a full range of their abilities. Points were hard earned, skilfully won. Nerves . No sign. Two things were clear. We had a final worthy of the occasion, and raducanu had the first set, 6 4. She was broken early in the second set, broke back like that. Now fernandez was struggling to hold her serve. 44 years of waiting, one hour 51 on court. And one more serve. It is right to realise what this means for british tennis, but also for world tennis. It was an outstanding match, an astounding champion. Really, its yours its all yours. These images will be the posters and the posts displayed for decades. If the point of sport is to uplift and amaze, Emma Raducanu is already at the pinnacle. Joe wilson, bbc news. The queen sent her congratulations to the teenager, saying in a statement it is a remarkable achievement at such a young age, and is testament to your hard work and dedication. The statement goes on. I have no doubt your outstanding performance, and that of your opponent Leylah Fernandez, will inspire the next generation of tennis players. The Duke And Duchess of cambridge tweeted huge congratulations Emma Raducanu on your stunning performances and historic Grand Slam victory. We are all so proud of you. the prime minister, boris johnson, tweeted what a sensational match huge congratulations to Emma Raducanu. You showed extraordinary skill, poise and guts and we are all hugely proud of you. And the former Tennis Champion Martina navratilova said a star is born. Never has a qualifier won a major men or women and she is just getting started. Leylah fernandez will be back both are champions but emma has the trophy well done. 0ur Correspondent in New York, samira hussain, managed to catch up with emma and asked her about her sudden rise to fame. Ive got no idea whats going on, not at all. Ive got no clue. But anything that comes my way im ready to deal with it, and ive got great people around me to take me through these moments and they got me here, and, yeah, im very excited to celebrate with them later and also go home and see everyone back home. What was it like to receive a message from the queen . It meant everything to get a message from her majesty. She is such a great Inspiration And Role model for the whole country, so to have a note from her, i was extremely honoured and very, very grateful that she took notice of my tennis. I cant believe it, im maybe going to frame that letter or something. Have you been able to facetime your parents . How much did you wish they were here . I how much did you wish they were here . ,. ,. A how much did you wish they were here . ,. X , how much did you wish they were here . ,. ,. A ,. , here . I have not checked my phone et. I definitely wish they were here to share this moment, its extremely special. Who knows what will happen in the future. They were watching from home and i am sure they are very proud of me. They spoke to me after the match and it was a great reassurance to have that. When i was out there i was playing for myself but also playing for them. I am sure you envisaged winning a Grand Slam at some point but did you imagine it would happen here . Not at all, three months ago i was doing my A Levels so to be here, i played an incredible amount of matches in the last four five weeks. We were joking to make this a three Week Trip to New York but no one believed it so i am not sure what is going on but i am sure in a couple of days maybe it will sink in a bit more. Now what . We rest and recover. And then we go again. I feel i am still hungry and there are lots of aspects of my game i can improve and physically i am nowhere near the finished product, i have a lot of work to do when i get back but first i am going to enjoy and rest and recover. The last time i spoke to you on monday, i asked how you celebrate and you said frozen yoghurt. Whats the flavourfor winning a championship . Flavour doesnt change imean. Its chocolate with more chocolate and some chocolate brownie. I mean, im one of those. So. The last week we havent managed to, actually, because of late finishes, but tonight, i am sure we will go to town on everything. The government has scrapped plans to introduce Vaccine Passports for entry to nightclubs and some live events in england at The End of the month. The Health Secretary Sajid javid said they will not now come in as other ministers had said they would just days ago. Similar measures are set to be introduced in scotland. Heres our political correspondent chris mason. This is the Parklife Festival in manchester. Tens of thousands of people in Heaton Park this weekend. Night clubs and perhaps events like this in england face the prospect of having to demand Vaccine Passports by The End of the month. But. I have never liked the idea of saying to people they must show their papers to do what is just an everyday activity, but we were right to properly look at it, to look at the evidence, and whilst we should keep it in reserve as a potential option, i am pleased to say we will not be going ahead with plans for Vaccine Passports. The organiser of this event, who also advises Manchesters Labour Mayor on the night time economy, says its a good move. Im delighted. And what a u turn. We have heard all week, lets go back a few months, they were saying, were not going to do it, were not going to do it, and then the narrative changed to, were now going to do it. But again, weve seen them do another u turn. That is what this government specialises in, u turns, but i have to say, this one, i absolutely welcome it. It is the right thing. And, yes, ministers have danced around a fair bit on all of this. Heres the Vaccines Minister on wednesday, saying they are a good idea because. If you look at what has happened in other countries, where nightclubs were opening and then shutting again, Opening And Shutting again, is that we want to avoid that disruption. And look at this, the Culture Secretary on friday. We will almost certainly be doing it for nightclubs. I think this just adds to a general sense of complacency thats around at the moment, and again to the confusing mixed messages we keep getting from the government. Only a couple of days ago, we heard from both the Vaccines Minister and the Culture Secretary that there would be the introduction of Vaccine Passports, and now its not going to happen. Labour think the about turn is a shambles, but add. I think the problem of Vaccine Passports is that people thought that was the key to everything, and the point about nightclubs and crowded events as you need to have other measures in place. They have to be well ventilated, they have to have clean air. In scotland, people will need to prove they have been fully vaccinated to enter nightclubs and other large events from the 1st of october. In wales, ministers will decide what to do this week. There are no current plans for Vaccine Passports in northern ireland. Chris mason, bbc news. Lets bring you up to date on the latest Uk Coronavirus figures. Nearly 30,000 new infections were recorded in the latest 24 Hour Period, which means an average of 36,000 cases per day in the last week. There were 8,098 people in hospital being treated for coronavirus as of wednesday. 56 deaths were reported in the latest 24 Hour Period thats people who died within 28 days of a positive covid test. It takes the average number of deaths per day in the last week to 139. The tuc has warned that up to 660,000 jobs could be at risk, if the uk fails to reach net zero Carbon Emissions as quickly as other countries. As its annual conference gets under way, unions are particularly concerned about heavy industries like steel production. The government said it doesnt recognise the tuc s figures, and said would cut Carbon Emissions by almost 80 per cent by 2035. Our Business Correspondent Katie Prescott reports. Making steel can be a dirty business, but there are ways around it. In sweden, theyre using new technology to produce steel without using coal. It is normally a more dirty business. It is normally a more dirty business. Workers in Blast Furnaces like this one fear that, if the uk doesnt go the same way, they could lose theirjobs. The whole infrastructure needs looking at and it all needs to be coordinated. People are thinking, where am i going to be working . Whats going to happen to the plant that i work on at this moment in time, and what does the future look like . There is no doubt that industry will have to undergo a green revolution, and that will inevitably have an impact on jobs, butjust how severe that impact will be will depend on how its planned, and, of course, how its paid for at a time when there are already so many demands on the public purse. As this years trades Union Congress gets underway, it is the major talking point. Companies are going to think about locating in countries where they get support from their government to make those adaptations, to invest in the new technology, to think about how you produce those currently heavy carbon goods in a low carbon way, and thats why the Uk Government needs to step up so that our businesses can compete. The government says that the tuc S Claims are untrue, saying. Its launched an independent group to look at developing good quality greenjobs. Many say the move to a green economy, handled well, brings opportunities. If we can move people towards safer, healthier, better rewarded, remunerated careers with better well being, that may leave some of those jobs behind, thats probably, on balance, a good thing. The challenge is building a low Carbon Future that includes industry and workers. Something else for next months budget. Katie prescott, bbc news. A team at Cranfield University is competing in an international competition to develop a robot that does the shopping in supermarkets. It might sound easy but identifying different objects by sight, and picking them up neatly is a significant challenge in robotics. Heres our Science Correspondent richard westcott, in a nervous corner of an Aircraft Hangar in bedfordshire. Guys, we need to go as soon as possible, really. A team is competing in a three day global competition, to programme a robot to identify and then move some shopping. Not as easy as you might think. It is all a bit tense because they are actually doing the Competition Run now. It is being watched in italy. Keeping an eye on us via live Video Link are judges and other competing teams at the main event in bologna. And we have the overview here, where we have already the Robot Standing and looking into the container. 13 international teams are competing in this competition. Six of them remotely, including cranfield. Gilbert, that was very expertly done, but the reality is a child could do that. Why is it so hard for a robot to do it . Something that seems so easy for us humans to do is actually extremely complicated for robots because firstly the robot will have to be able to see the item through its camera. Secondly, it will have to process the image using some really clever algorithm to identify what type of object it is, what orientation the object has been placed in, and then secondly, doing some calculation in orderfor the Robot Arm to be able to identify the correct position to then grab onto it using its fingers. Has it been good fun . Yeah, i would say it was great fun and challenging in the meantime, and we learned a lot during this process, and yeah, i think everybody is quite happy to get involved with this. So theres quite a Big Push at the moment for human robot interaction, so caregiving robots in hospitals, and care homes, so maybe for patients who are lonely and dont have anybody to come and visit them. Some of the money for the team comes from a big company whose future will rely on this kind of technology. Certainly with the high level skills, we find difficult in recruiting. Theres a shortage, there is high demand because lots of industries are now going for this level of robotics. So being engaged in these competitions allows us to keep in touch with the Recruitment Pipeline and some of the excellent research that is going on. A bit of Talent Spotting . Definitely. Robots are the future, but programming them to be as good as humans at some tasks is still many years away. Richard westcott, bbc news, cranfield in bedfordshire. The headlines on bbc news. Emma raducanu makes history at the Us Open, beating Leylah Fernandez to become the first british woman to win a Grand Slam singles final in 44 years. The government scraps plans for Vaccine Passports in nightclubs and large events in england. The Trade Union Congress warns that up to 660,000 jobs could be at risk if the uk fails to reach net zero Carbon Emissions as quickly as other countries. Lets get more on that remarkable win by Emma Raducanu in New York. And a short time ago i spoke to dame katherine grainger, the chair of uk sport, who told me her reaction to The End of the match. The final ace, like everyone in the country, i was leaping around the room watching it. I always believed she had this incredible demeanour throughout the whole tournament which makes you think she really could make the Fairy Tale happen, but to see it completed, just absolute joy, so pleased for her. What effect do you think her win will have on inspiring future generations of sportsmen and sportswomen . In certain areas of sport, we kind of count the decades since this last happened. We just want to see great champions coming from places we know and love, home grown talent and when that happens, there is a real message to everyone that this is possible. We know people like that at schools and local clubs who can go on and do wonderful things, that is really exciting and motivating for people to think maybe that is possible for them. Maybe they dont want to win a Grand Slam but lots of people are picking up Tennis Rackets all different ages thinking, this is a sport i would love to get involved in either for the first time or not having done it for years. That Momentum And Enthusiasm is priceless when it comes to those real iconic moments of sport. A real achievement for her, no question, we also have to acknowledge Leylah Fernandez. How remarkable it was for her. Young girls in particular, how important do you think this was for encouraging them to take up sport . How often do you get to see a Grand Slam final between an 18 year old and a 19 year old . And the quality was absolutely sensational. It really was a gripping match. You are right, for every great champion you need great opposition to frame those finals. Whatever time of the day or night, whatever country you are watching, people stayed up to watch that and felt the electricity. For both of those young athletes, how much enjoyment they took from it. They are at the top of their game already very early in their Career And Plenty more to come but they love what theyre doing and that is a great message for young people. Yes, you can take it seriously to be one of the best players in the world also love every minute of it and take celebration in it. They were both brilliant examples of possibility in that sport. You talked before about leaving a lasting legacy for grassroots sport, how accessible is this for children out there . How easy is it with the existing resources and funding for the future Emma Raducanus out there in country to emerge . I think it is great, we have already had the media going down to Bromley And Beckenham where emma started off to showcase the new. She is the young generation to me but an even younger generation at The Club, they know somebody in The Club who went on to great things so the great thing is people knowing knowing where The Clubs are and where they can go and find out how membership works. When you have this moment of real inspiration, there is a real sense of making sure all the doors are open to as many people as want to have a go now themselves so i think you dont want to lose these rare moments when suddenly the country is paying attention and people want to have a go. Now all Tennis Clubs up and down the country will be thinking this is a great opportunity to get more people involved in the sport. One of the most important areas for wildlife in britain could soon be under threat according to some conservationists in kent. Plans for a huge disney Style Theme Park have been proposed for the the swanscombe peninsula, which is home to rare bees, orchids, Water Voles and nightingales. Our Environment Correspondent Yvette austin reports. One for you to do. Volunteers from the british trust for 0rnithology having a Field Day on the swanscombe peninsula. Slowly and gently they are building a picture of the variety of species on the site earmarked for a Theme Park. This is a reed warbler. Also Summer Terry has been expertly putting Identification Rings on the legs of birds he has caught. More than a70 so far, including Endangered Species like cuckoos and linnets. A bird the hand is definitely worth two in the bush. I knew from experience there is a real density of breeding Bird Population here and it needs to be proved categorically so no developer can ever argue against it again. The campaign against building the London Resort Theme Park here has been gathering pace. Particularly since march when Natural England designated the area a site of special scientific interest. It is one of only two places in britain where their critically endangered Jumping Spider lives. This is one of the most important sites in the country for Endangered Species and biodiversity. If that means anything, then sites like this do need to be saved. We havea nature and Climate Crisis and that means there are some places that should just be no go for development. The resort would be set across 535 acres. There would be themed areas from the mystical to the futuristic, with rides, hotels and shops. Developers say Thousands Ofjobs would be created. The truth of the peninsula is it is a site that requires remediation. It is a dirty site filled with dredging from the thames. It has all sorts of negativity about it and a lot needs to be done to improve it. We know this site has degraded over the years because we have the environmental report but what is important is investing in the area making it a better place and environment. But many local people and experts alike have grave concerns. So many people use this green space. With lockdown, families have been coming out that perhaps visited here before. They have really enjoyed it. Yes, it is as important for the people here as it is for the wildlife. There will be a full public examination of the plan. Ultimately the Secretary Of State for local government will decide if it can go ahead. Yvette austin, bbc news, swanscombe. A film about illegal abortions in 1960s france has won the main golden Lion Prize at the venice film festival. Audrey diwan who directed happening said shed made the movie out of a sense of anger. Tim allman looks back at a busy night on the Red Carpet and his report contains flash photography. But there was the small matter of some awards being handed out. The Golden Lion for best film to. Levenement. Happening by Audrey Diwan. The biggest of them all going to the french film happening its director visibly moved by the honour. Set in the 1960s, it tells the story of a young woman looking for an abortion at a time when the procedure was illegal. It is an intense journey a vivid depiction of desperation, trauma and shame. I did this movie with anger. I did the movie with desire, also. I did it with my belly, my guts, my heart and my head. Cricket fans watching a match in ireland were treated to a nice bit of fielding by A Dog which ran onto the pitch. This was a match in the womens all Ireland T20 cup. The wicketkeeper throws the ball at the stumps but misses. Its then picked up by a four legged Pitch Invader who brings it back to the wicket. Eventually. There it is. That is good Team Spirit from the dog. That is good Team Spirit from the dog. Now its time for a look at the weather with thomas shaffanacker. Hello, and i sense a bet for some of us but many of us have had a very damp day with rain at times. This is the Satellite Picture with the Jet Stream superimposed. Look at that pattern comes back again and has brought as this Weather Front. You can see where the rain is through the course of the evening, spreading further inland. It is so slow moving which means many parts of the uk further north are quite dry and chilly in scotland and also the extreme south and the South East should stay dry as well. Will be quite mild in the south because the air is coming in from the south relatively speaking to anywhere else in the uk but the winds are light and a small Weather Front is an area of High Pressure so its slow moving in the north sea. The winds are blowing from the north, here they are lifting in the south so where you see winds blowing in opposite directions Weather Fronts tend to get stuck and that is happening on monday, cool and cloudy across western areas, any brightness in the east will give way to temperatures rising to 21 degrees so on Monday Evening you can see that rain still across western areas, spreading further north and its still here on tuesday early morning but through the course of tuesday we expect that rain to slowly shift towards eastern areas so there will be rain in places like nottingham, london and brighton. Tuesday evening that rain should be out of the way so we should have a fine end to the day across western parts of the uk. On wednesday the weather doesnt look too bad. High pressure is building in from the azores so that is why it is called the Azores High and this ridge of High Pressure means wednesday and thursday not a bad day. The temperatures will recover a bit, some decent sunny spells but by friday it looks as though an atlantic Weather Front will sweep in and there will be some rain. Goodbye. Hello this is bbc news. Emma raducanu makes history at the Us Open, beating Leylah Fernandez to become the first british woman to win a Grand Slam singles final in 44 years.
