The Anti Immigration Hungarian prime Minister Victor Orban meets Pope Francis in budapest. Britains18 year old Emma Raducanu has won the Us Open, in one of the most dramatic victories in modern tennis. She beat19 year old Leylah Fernandez of canada in two sets, 6 4 6 3. Raducanu only made it into the tournament as a qualifier, but she won the title Without dropping a single set. Shes the first british woman to win a grand Slam Singles Title in 44 years. Heres the bbc s sports correspondentjoe wilson. The borough of queens on a sunny day, and the extraordinary progress of one young woman. Shes been absolutely amazing this whole tournament. She has a lot of energy. Shes so composed and ruthless. Shes going to smash it. You know who theyre talking about. Well, there were two teenagers in the Us Open final, canadian Leylah Fernandez at the top of the screen. As early as the second game, we saw intense rallies and we saw Emma Raducanu prevailing here. Both players settled immediately to display a full range of their abilities. Points were hard earned, skilfully won. Nerves no sign. Two things were clear. We had a final worthy of the occasion, and raducanu had the first set, 6 4. She was broken early in the second set, broke back like that. Now fernandez was struggling to hold her serve. Did we see any of this coming . 44 years of waiting, one hour 51 on court, and one more serve. It is right to realise what this means for british tennis, but also for world tennis. It was an outstanding match, an astounding champion. Really, its yours its all yours. This is an absolute dream. You just have visions of yourself going up to the box, hugging everyone, that is something you always think of any always work for, and for that moment actually happen, yeah, i am just so gratefulfor my team actually happen, yeah, i am just so grateful for my team who are here with me and the team back home, the lta, every single person who has supported me along this journey. These images will be the posters and the posts displayed for decades. If the point of sport is to uplift and amaze, Emma Raducanu is already at the pinnacle. Joe wilson, Bbc News. Our Sports Reporter Laura Scott visited bromley tennis club, where Emma Raducanu trained for years. I am here at bromley tennis club, where emma really developed her tennis skills. She was spotted as a youngster and it was here that she really rose through the ranks from the age of 9 to about 17. I am joined by one of herformer coaches, mattjames. You first spotted her atjunior wimbledon, and began working with her. Could you talk us through those early days and what you were so excited by in her game . It was what we saw yesterday, youre seeing a competitor, determined, dogged, gritty and ruthless, the way she has gone through this tournament, and you could see that even a few years ago when she was competing injunior wimbledon, and actually played against leylah back then, and did a lot of the same stuff. Are you surprised by what she has done . Surprised it has come so soon. We thought she would be top 50 in the world in a few years, and maybe top 20 from there, but it has not quite sunk in yet. Where did you watch and how did you feel when she won it . Just watching at home. Obviously immensely proud, but excited as well about what this might mean for her career and how inspiring it can be for some of the youngsters, she is an ambassador for the lta youth programme, which is great, and why not get into tennis . This will inspire a lot of young players. I have heard a lot in the last 2a hours about the importance of capitalising on What Emma has done. Some people say not enough was done when Andy Murray won his Grand Slams to get the next generation into tennis and perhaps more could be done now. What do you think is really important now she has won this Grand Slam at the age of 18 to really capitalise on that success . I think it is great that the lta and the government are going to work together, there are a lot of courts in the uk that are not being used and need a bit of work doing, so hopefully a lot of money will be put into those to get the courts and resources into a good space, so why not ride the wave we have got right now . Theres a lot of buzz around british tennis right now, so lets get those players on court. She has one Grand Slam under her belt, but what do you think of her potential . A difficult question so soon after, because it was a massive surprise. But why not . She will use this experience to learn from, like we saw from what happened at wimbledon, and to do it so soon and so young, she is going to get stronger, more robust, things can still improve. So the sky is the limit even though she is already there. I am alsojoined by sarah langford, a director at Bromley Tennis Centre. What have you noticed from emmas run at wimbledon and now at the Us Open, what is the impact been on how much your phones have been ringing . We have seen an uptick in enquiries for sure, it was very similar when andy won his gold. But we are very excited that people are getting in touch with us and other clubs across the country, a very exciting time for tennis. There is an Honours Board when you see that she won the under eights in the county championship. Could you have believed she has done what she has done now . Like matt said, a bit of a surprise, but so exciting for her, her team, those who have worked with her in the past, and also for the kids that are playing tennis and those who now want to take it up as a pastime. It isjust so exciting. Brilliant. A very difficult time for indoor venues like yourselves over the last year, and this could be a big boost for you. I think it will be, there was a lot of pent up energy after all the lockdowns, we already saw huge interest in tennis across the country on outdoor courts initially, but here also on indoor courts, and I Think this will have the same impact. A hugely exciting day not just for Emma Raducanu but for british tennis as a whole, and a hugely important one as well for what could happen in the future off the back of her success. The government has ruled out introducing Coronavirus Vaccine passports in england for the time being. The Health Secretary, Sajid Javid, also told the bbc he did not expect the country to see any more lockdowns to fight the Covid I9 crisis. But he said the pandemic had not gone away and Vaccine Passports for entry to nightclubs and large events in england should be kept in reserve. Opposition politicians have accused the government of indecision on the issue. Our political Correspondent Ione wells has more. There has been a lot of back and forth and mixed messages from ministers over the last week or so about this. Just last week, vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi said that by The End of the month in england, Vaccine Passports would be needed for entry to nightclubs and other venues. Today, Health Secretary Sajid Javid has said he has considered the evidence and that will no longer be the case, they will not be needed to entry for certain venues in england. Lets hear what he said earlier. I have never liked the idea of saying to people, you must show your papers, for what is just an everyday activity, but we were right to properly look at it, to look at the evidence. But you are not Doing It . We have looked at it properly, and whilst we should keep it in reserve as a potential option, i am pleased to say we will not be going ahead with plans for Vaccine Passports. A pretty definitive message from Sajid Javid that Vaccine Passports are not going ahead in england for entry to other venues. To recap, elsewhere in the uk, in scotland from the 1st Of October, it is understood that Vaccine Passports will be needed for entry to some crowded venues, and in wales, a decision on this is expected next week. But returning to the situation in england, he has said that is not the plan and not something they are planning to bring forward to parliament, and judging by the reaction of shadow Health SecretaryJonathan Ashworth this morning, it does not look as if labour are going to oppose the decision not to go ahead with them. I think people thought that Vaccine Passports would be the key to everything. The point about nightclubs and large events, you have to have other measures in place, they have to be well ventilated and you have to have clean air, and we have been arguing for months now, particularly when it comes to school, put the clean Air Facilities in place which is relatively straightforward. So what we know now is that Vaccine Passports are off the table in england, and the prime minister is due to announce a raft of measures on tuesday for how the Uk Government does plan to tackle covid going into the winter, including things like the Roll Out of a Vaccine Booster programme, following advice from an independent committee, the jcvi, which we expect to come through on monday, about who will be eligible for that first wave of Vaccine Booster jabs. It is expected the elderly are among those who will be prioritised. It is also expected the prime minister will outline a couple of contingency measures the government is looking at, things like mask wearing, social distancing, possibly working from home, all things that the government may need to introduce if at any point the nhs is at risk of being overwhelmed again. But the government very keen to stress, as we heard from Sajid Javid earlier, that lockdowns are not something they want to consider, and they are repealing certain measures that were in that Coronavirus Emergency Piece of legislation introduced to give ministers new powers to tackle covid, including things like scrapping the powers that enabled them to shut businesses and close schools. So quite a different tone from the government as opposed to last winter, but certainly the Direction Of Travel is that they want christmas to go ahead as normal, they want this winter to be a winter of continuing to live with the virus, and certainly avoiding any kind of full lockdowns. Earlier i spoke to Michael Kill who is the Chief Executive of the night time industries association, and he gave me his reaction to the news. It is welcome. As you can appreciate, this has been a huge concern for our industry for many weeks now since the announcement on the 19th that this was a potential. We have been working very hard lobbying behind the scenes, working alongside other trade bodies. Our members and to ensure that the government understands whether charges are with this, and we are strongly pleased they have decided to drop this, we can now focus on the future and we work towards building confidence with our workforce and our customers again, and reinforcing those communications, keeping people safe, as you could appreciate, because that is still an important part of our strategy moving forward as an industry. So what are nightclubs doing to build confidence and keep people safe . We have already seen that many have taken on some of the toolkits as the government have narrated them, which is around things like test and trace, the lateral flow testing, sanitation, management of staff, communication strategies, looking at ventilation upgrades, so many of these things have been looked at, but this is a Side By Side Basis Position in terms of the risk assessment. Site by site basis. We were pleased when we heard this was the way the government would move forward, and as you can appreciate, with this update, we are pleased that we are going to be allowed to maintain that Position And Work as hard as we have worked, and we have proven that, given that the environments we have been able to create, the safety we have been able to create for many of these people coming into our spaces, particularly for our staff. Now we can focus on the future, which I Think is really important, because this industry has been at the sharp end of this pandemic for a very long time. What has the evidence been in terms of Covid Cases in nightclubs since they have been opened . It has been very limited. As you can appreciate, we are having cases, but they are being managed appropriately. When the 19th came about, there were many suggestions we would see a spike in cases, in infections, and mortality rates, that did not happen, contrary to clinicians and scientists, we did not see that at the point of people started to engage in our industry again, and I Think that is just a clear narrative to the hard work that our industry has done. We have seen that in scotland, we saw an uplift in cases when the schools returned, similarly we will see that in england. So we are working hard still to ensure that we are creating safe spaces for people to come and enjoy social environments, we ask people to take some level social responsibility for that, but the key thing is that we are still focused on the public health strategy, but we are glad the government has some confidence that we can deliver as an industry, as we have done for many years in the past. The Home Secretary has insisted she did not break the Ministerial Code when she met with the boss of a Hotel Chain and a British Airways executive, Without any officials present. The Sunday Mirror newspaper reports that Priti Patel attended a lunch last month, where Covid Travel rules were among the topics discussed. Ms patel resigned from the cabinet in 2017, amid controversy over her unauthorised meetings with israeli officials, politicians and the then prime minister benjamin netanyahu. A spokesman for Ms Patel said details of her meetings will be published as usual in accordance with the code. The sides drew i i towards The End of last season, and Liverpool Managerjurgen Klopp is expecting another tough test today. The game itself is already tricky, we saw in the last two games we played against them, first time for me playing leeds, and it was very exciting, both games. So that they have obviously a specific way of playing football, with a strict man marking Philosophy Or Idea in defending and very flexible and very brave, very dynamic, in possession. So a really good football team, and, yeah, we have to be at our best to get something there. The two men have radically different interpretations of what constitutes a christian approach to migration. The pontiff has severely criticised the reluctance of some European Leaders to take in refugees, but Mr Orban says hes defending christian europe. Our central Europe Correspondent Nick thorpe is in budapest. Both sides were keen to smooth over any differences. The vatican stressed that this is a spiritual visit for the pope to celebrate mass in heroes square in hungary for Tens Of Thousands of christians, especially catholics from around the world, the Closing Event, the climax of a week of the Eucharistic Congress, only held every four years. From the hungarian governments side, the government has been keen to stress it is a great honour to have the pope in hungary even for such a short visit, but of course behind the scenes, there are huge differences between there are huge differences between the two men. While the pope, from the two men. While the pope, from the start of his papacy, has stressed the need for europe, for christians in particular, to welcome people of other faiths to help those in need, those fleeing from war and violence, Asylum Seekers and refugees, whereas Viktor Orban, as the head of the hungarian government, especially since 2015, has set himself up as a champion, as he puts it, of christian europe, of trying to keep europe as it is, and often that seems to be an anti islamic, anti muslim message. Your also have a situation where, just six months ahead of the hungarian elections, this visit is very interesting to both sides, both to the government side, with Viktor Orban welcoming the pope and really seeking in some way some sort of support from the pope for his own policies in defence of christian europe, in defence of persecuted christians around the world, whereas the more liberal opposition here seeing this as a liberal pope, really, they have been posters going up really, they have been posters going up all Over Budapest welcoming the pope as a champion of human dignity, human rights, of civil rights. So very different views here, the two men only had half an hour or so of talks before the meetings went ahead with the hungarian bishops, with people of other faiths and then of course the big mass, the Closing Event of the Eucharistic Congress in budapest, and the pope then after this on his way to slovakia for this longer at trip. The Trade Union Group the tuc has warned that up to 660,000 jobs could be at risk if the uk fails to reach net zero Carbon Emissions as quickly as other countries. Ministers have pledged to cut Carbon Emissions by almost 80 by 2035. But the tuc fears that many roles could be moved elsewhere unless britain starts investing more heavily in green infrastructure. Our Business Correspondent Katie Prescott reports. Making steel is a dirty business. And in 30 years time, this has to change. But what will it mean for heavy industrialjobs like these, in Blast Furnaces in South Wales . Workers fear they could be laid off unless businesses get more support to make them greener ahead of the uks legally binding commitment to stop adding to climate change. As this Years Trade Union congress gets under way in london, protecting these jobs is a major talking point. Unions say they want to see a plan in place from the government to help companies adapt to the green future. We are focusing on heavy carbon industries like the steel industry, for example, where we know there are new low carbon ways to do business and we know businesses are going to have to adapt. But what is going to happen is that companies are going to think about locating in countries where they get support from the government to make those adaptations to invest in the new technology, to think about how you produce those carbon heavy goods in a low carbon way, and that is why the Uk Government needs to step up so that our businesses can compete. Theres No Doubt the industry will have to undergo a Green Revolution, and that will inevitably have an impact on job. Just how severe that impact will be will depend on how it is planned and of course how it is paid for, at a time when there are already so many demands on the public purse. The government says the tuc S Claims are untrue, saying the uk has grown its economy by 78 while cutting emissions by 44 over the past three decades. And it launched an independent Task Force to develop plans for good quality Green Jobs by 2030. In a rare moment of unity this weekend, Employers Group the cbi backs unions, saying that speed is of the essence when it comes to going green. More information on the governments net zero strategy will be launched ahead of cop26, the major climate Change Conference at The End of october. Katie prescott, Bbc News imagine youre standing in a Supermarket And Someone asks you to find then pick up a bottle of oil . A team at Cranfield University is competing in an international competition to develop a robot that picks up shopping. It might sound easy, but in fact identifying different objects by sight, and picking them up neatly is one of the great challenges in building the next generation of robots. Heres our Science Correspondent richard westcott, in a nervous corner of an Aircraft Hangar in bedfordshire, a team is competing in a three day global competition, to programme a robot to identify and then move some shopping. Not as easy as you might think. It is all a bit tense because they are actually doing the Competition Run now. It is being watched in italy. Keeping an eye on us via live Video Link are judges and other competing teams at the main event in bologna. And we have the overview here, but we have already the Robot Standing and looking into the container. 13 international teams are competing in this competition. Six of them remotely, including cranfield. Gilbert, that was very expertly done, but the reality is a child could do that. Why is it so hard for a robot to do it . Something that seems so easy for us humans to do is actually extremely complicated for robots, because firstly the robot will have to be see the item through its camera. Secondly, it will have to process the image using some really clever algorithm to identify what type of object it is, what orientation the object has been placed in, and then secondly, bring some calculation in orderfor the Robot Arm to be able to identify the correct position to then grab onto it using its fingers. Has it been good fun . Yeah, it was great fun and challenging in the meantime, and we learned a lot during this process, and yeah, I Think everybody is quite happy to get involved with this. Theres quite a Big Push at the moment for human robot interaction, so caregiving robots in hospitals, and care homes, so maybe for people who are lonely and dont have anybody to visit them. Some of the money for the team comes from a big company whose future will rely on this kind of technology. Certainly with the high level skills, we find difficult in recruiting. Theres a shortage, there is high because lots of industries are now going for this level of robotics. So this allows us to keep in touch with the Recruitment Pipeline and some of the excellent research that is going on. A bit of Talent Spotting . Definitely. Robots are the future, but programming them to be as good as humans at some tasks is still many years away. Now its time for a look at the weather. A decent enough day for many of us today, but certainly not the case in wales and parts of south western england. Some quite heavy rain here affecting coastal areas, particularly around wales, some of that rain also moving into the midlands or through the second half of the day. Quite fresh in the north, only 12 celsius in aberdeen, dry here with some sunshine, 22 further south. Quite a compact area of rain affecting parts of wales and parts of the midlands through the night tonight, dry tonight across scotland and northern ireland, six to 10 celsius, still mild in the south at around 1a. So another cloudy picture on monday, some rain as well, but generally speaking the North East and far south remain dry through monday. Goodbye. Good afternoon. The queen has congratulated britains Emma Raducanu on winning the Us Open womens singles title. Her majesty said the 18 year Olds Victory is a remarkable achievement at such a young age. The teenager from Bromley Beat her canadian opponent Leylah Fernandez in straight sets 6 4, 6 3 in New York Last Night. Shes the first qualifier ever to win a grand Slam Title and the first british woman to do so in more than a0 years Asjoe Wilson reports. Emma raducanu. Stand by for the most fearless, exuberant execution of Sporting Ability you may ever witness. For Emma Raducanu, standard practice. There were two teenagers in the Us Open final. Canadian Leylah Fernandez, at the top of the screen. As early as the second game, we saw intense rallies and we saw Emma Raducanu prevailing here. Both players settled immediately, to display a full range of their abilities. Points were hard earned, skilfully won. Nerves . No sign. Two things were clear. We had a final worthy of the occasion, and raducanu had the first set, 6 4. She was broken early in the second set broke back like that. Wow. Now fernandez was struggling to hold her serve. Did you see this shot coming . Oh, my god did we see any of this coming . 44 years of waiting, one hour 51 on court, and one more serve. It is right to realise what this means for british tennis, but also for world tennis. It was an outstanding match, an astounding champion. Really, its yours its all yours. Its an absolute dream. Like, you. You just have visions of yourself, you know, going up to the box, hugging everyone, celebrating. Thats something that you always think of and you always work for and for that moment to actually happen, yeah, im just so grateful for my team that are here with me and the team that are back home and the lta and every single person who has supported me along this journey. A performance to impress even the greatest players. The poise that she showed with her game, with her technique, with her mental strength, emotional maturity beyond 18 years old, its really, really impressive. If sport exists to uplift and amaze, Emma Raducanu is already at the pinnacle. Joe wilson, Bbc News. Well, for Emmas Family and friends, celebrations went on in to the night after her historic victory. Laura scott is at the Bromley Tennis Centre is south East London where Emma Trains. Over to you. Well, while parents may have been debating over the Breakfast Table this morning whether this is the greatest ever sporting achievement, many children have been left wondering whether they can be the next Emma Raducanu and whether it is the youngsters queueing up to play on these courts where Emma Trains or Add Clubs up and down the country, they now have a truly relatable new role model. Seeing their home grown Star Seal the most extraordinary of triumphs, elation for emma erupted. Shes just stunned the world on the iconic courts of flushing meadows, but it was here at Park Langley Club in beckenham that, as a six year old, she started the work that has led to Grand Slam glory. Those who had seen the first signs of her potential could barely believe it. The grind of being a tennis coach, Strength And Conditioning coach, its tough, and moments like this make it all worth it. Hours on from her remarkable win, is this the Emma Effect already on display . Local Boys And Girls back in bromley telling us they are keener than ever to take to the court. It inspires me a lot to play more, to be more enthusiastic about how i play, how i can progress and, yeah, all of those different experiences are really nice. I watched a little bit Last Night and my parents told me that she won and i already knew that she played here and i thought it was really cool, so i wanted to come here today to see how well i could train here, too. While the celebrations within british tennis are still in full flow, the pressure is on those in charge of the sport to capitalise on raducanus success. The fact that she is still a teenager, a lot of girls drop out of tennis at 15, 16, and seeing Herjust Finish her a levels, they can relate to that end they can relate to that and hopefully it will keep them playing, but, also, it will inspire the current crop of british players that we have got. The phones are ringing off the hook at Bromley Tennis Centre, where a certain E Raducanu lifted one of her earliest trophies back in 2009. And there is hope they will now get many more rackets in hands. I really think that its really going to inspire some young girls in particular, but I Think children, Boys And Girls, are going to be really excited by the win, fancy getting into tennis, look up their local venue. Raducanu has made rewriting Tennis History Look easy and, most importantly of all, fun. This isntjust an exciting moment for those involved in the sport, its an important one, too. Laura scott, Bbc News, bromley. The government has scrapped plans to introduce Vaccine Passports in england, just days after saying they would be going ahead in nightclubs and other large events at The End of the month. The Health Secretary, Sajid Javid, said that wouldnt now happen but the scheme would still be kept as a potential option. Mrjavid said he also wanted to get rid of Pcr Tests for foreign travel. Heres our political Correspondent Ione wells. The tuc has warned that up to 660,000 jobs could be at risk if the uk fails to reach net zero Carbon Emissions as quickly as other countries. As its annual conference gets underway, unions are paricularly concerned about heavy industries like steel. The government says it doesnt recognise the tuc s figures and ministers have pledged to cut Carbon Emissions by almost 80 by 2035. Our Business Correspondent Katie Prescott reports. Making steel can be a dirty business, but there are ways around it. In sweden, they are using new technology to produce steel Without using coal. Workers in Blast Furnaces like this one fear that, if the uk doesnt go the same way, they could lose theirjobs. The whole infrastructure needs looking at and it all needs to be coordinated. People are thinking, where i going to be working . What is going to happen to the plant that i work in at this moment in time and what does the future look like . There is No Doubt that industry will have to undergo a Green Revolution and that will inevitably have an impact on jobs, butjust how severe that impact will be will depend on how its planned and, of course, how its paid for at a time when there are already so demands on the public purse. As this years trades Union Congress gets underway, it is the major talking point. Companies are going to think about locating in countries where they get support from their government to make those adaptations, to invest in the new technology, to think about how you produce those currently heavy carbon goods in a low carbon way, and that is why the Uk Government needs to step up so that our businesses can compete. The government says that the tuc S Claims are untrue, saying the uk has grown its economy by 78 while cutting emissions by 44 over the past three decades. And it launched an independent Task Force to develop plans for good quality Green Jobs by 2030. Many say the move to a green economy, handled well, brings opportunities. If we can move people toward safer, healthier, better rewarded healthier, better rewarded Remunerated Careers with better well being, that may lead some well being, that may leave some of thosejobs behind, that is probably, on balance, a good thing. The challenge is building a low Carbon Future that includes industry and workers. Something else for next months budget. Katie prescott, Bbc News. Thats it for now. The next news on Bbc One is at 5. 35 this afternoon. Bye for now. Now on Bbc News, its time for the Film Review hello, and welcome to the Film Review on Bbc News. Look whos here hes real its Mark Kermode really here in the studio, not an avatar it is fabulous to be back in the studio with you, jane. How lovely to see you again. So, we have a packed show coming up. So, weve got reviews of the collini case, which is a german crime thriller. We have respect, which is the biopic of aretha franklin, withjennifer hudson. And we have herself, which is the new film by phyllida lloyd, which I Think you and i have different opinions about. Chuckles to be discussed. We start with the collini case. Yes, so, german crime thriller, based on a Book By Ferdinand Von Schirach which i confess i have not read, although its apparently a very famous book. Story is a young lawyer is assigned to a case in which he has to defend a man, Fabricio Collini played by the great Franco Niro who is accused of murder. The case seems fairly hopeless, not least because shortly after the murder, Fabricio Collini presented himself, covered in blood, and now refuses to speak in his own defence. Heres a clip. So it then transpires that the lawyer actually knew the victim. In fact, the victim was something of a mentor to him, took him under his wing, you know, almost fathered him. The question is why on earth would anybody want to kill this man, who was a respected industrialist and, as far as the lawyer, knows was somebody who was a very good person . The author of The Book, his grandfather was a very high ranking nazi who was tried at nuremberg and one of the things The Book is about is coming to terms with, you know, the past and the ghosts of your own past and accepting the fact that people who seem like one thing may actually be something completely different, so a lot of the story is to do with confronting guilt. Its also a pretty good drama in terms of its a Courtroom Drama. Now, i love a Courtroom Drama, i do understand that Courtroom Dramas are full of things that never happen in real courtrooms, like people producing witnesses Out Of Nowhere that nobody s heard of, people presenting Papers Ijust happen to have in my bag. I quite like a Courtroom Drama too, you see, so. But. Yeah, im a suckerfor it. I keep expecting somebody to slam the table and say, you cant handle the truth if you accept that the drama itself is fairly contrived and it does, you know, have all those conventions, then I Think its very entertaining. But more importantly, it is about something very serious. It is about that thing of looking back into the past, looking back into a countrys guilty past and your own familys guilty past and asking questions about whether people are the people that they seem to be. So its doing quite a clever thing which is its a very entertaining Pot Boiler on one hand but also, its about something far more substantial. As i said, i havent read The Book, but i very much enjoyed the film
