We have looked at it properly, and while we should keep it in reserve as a potential option, lam pleased to say we will not be going ahead with plans for Vaccine Passports. A Day Of Remembrance draws to a close. America pays tribute to the victims of 9 11, 20 years on. The Anti Immigration Hungarian prime Minister Victor Orban meets Pope Francis in budapest. Britains18 year old Emma Raducanu has won the Us Open, in one of the most dramatic victories in modern tennis. She beat 19 year old Leylah Fernandez of canada in two sets, 6 4 6 3. Raducanu only made it into the tournament as a qualifier, but she won the title without dropping a single set. Shes the first british woman to win a grand Slam Singles Title in 44 years. Heres the bbc s sports correspondentjoe wilson. The borough of queens on a sunny day, and the extraordinary progress of one young woman. Shes been absolutely amazing this whole tournament. She has a lot of energy. Shes so composed and ruthless. Shes going to smash it. You know who theyre talking about. Well, there were two teenagers in the Us Open final, canadian Leylah Fernandez at the top of the screen. As early as the second game, we saw intense rallies and we saw Emma Raducanu prevailing here. Both players settled immediately to display a full range of their abilities. Points were hard earned, skilfully won. Nerves no sign. Two things were clear. We had a final worthy of the occasion, and raducanu had the first set, 6 4. She was broken early in the second set, broke back like that. Now fernandez was struggling to hold her serve. 44 years of waiting, one hour 51 on court, and one more serve. It is right to realise what this means for british tennis, but also for world tennis. It was an outstanding match, an astounding champion. Really, its yours its all yours. These images will be the posters and the posts displayed for decades. If the point of sport is to uplift and amaze, Emma Raducanu is already at the pinnacle. Joe wilson, bbc news. The queen sent her congratulations to the teenager, saying in a statement, it is a remarkable achievement at such a young age, and is testament to your hard work and dedication. The statement goes on, i have no doubt your outstanding performance, and that of your opponent Leylah Fernandez, will inspire the next generation of tennis players. The Duke And Duchess of cambridge tweeted, huge congratulations Emma Raducanu on your stunning performances and historic Grand Slam victory. We are all so proud of you. The prime minister, borisjohnson, tweeted, what a sensational match huge congratulations to Emma Raducanu. You showed extraordinary skill, poise, and guts, and we are all hugely proud of you. And the former Tennis Champion Martina navratilova said, a star is born. Never has a qualifier won a major men or women and she is just getting started. Leylah fernandez will be back both are champions but emma has the trophy well done. Our correspondent in new York Samira Hussain managed to catch up with emma, and asked her about her sudden rise to fame. Mr has also tweeted herself this morning, and says, we are taking her home, with pictures of her very happily holding the trophy. Emma has tweeted herself. Ive got no idea whats going on, not at all. Ive got no clue. Anything that comes my way, im ready to deal with it, and ive got great people around me to take me through these moments and they got me here, and im very excited to celebrate with them later and also go home and see everyone back home. What was it like to receive a message from the queen . It meant everything, to get a message from her majesty. She is such a great Inspiration And Role model for the whole country. To have a note from her, i was extremely honoured and very, very grateful that she took notice of my tennis, I Cant believe it, im maybe going to frame that letter or something. The last time i spoke to you on monday, i asked how you celebrate and you said frozen yoghurt. Whats the flavour of winning a championship . Flavour doesnt change its chocolate with more chocolate and some chocolate brownie. I mean, im one of those. The last week we havent managed to, actually, because of late finishes, but tonight, i am sure we will go to town on everything. Our Sports Reporter Laura Scott visited bromley tennis club, where Emma Raducanu trained for years. I am here at bromley tennis club, where emma really developed her tennis skills. She was spotted as a youngster and it was here that she really rose through the ranks from the age of 9 to about 17. I am joined by one of herformer coaches, mattjames. You first spotted her atjunior wimbledon, and began working with her. Could you talk us through those early days and what you were so excited by in her game . It was what we saw yesterday, youre seeing a competitor, determined, dogged, gritty and ruthless, the way she has gone through this tournament, and you could see that even a few years ago when she was competing injunior wimbledon, and actually played against leylah back then, and did a lot of the same stuff. Are you surprised by what she has done . Surprised it has come so soon. We thought she would be top 50 in the world in a few years, and maybe top 20 from there, but it has not quite sunk in yet. Where did you watch and how did you feel when she won it . Just watching at home. Obviously immensely proud, but excited as well about what this might mean for her career and how inspiring it can be for some of the youngsters, she is an ambassador for the lta youth programme, which is great, and why not get into tennis . This will inspire a lot of young players. I have heard a lot in the last 2a hours about the importance of capitalising on What Emma has done. Some people say not enough was done when Andy Murray won his Grand Slams to get the next generation into tennis and perhaps more could be done now. What do you think is really important now she has won this Grand Slam at the age of 18 to really capitalise on that success . I think it is great that the lta and the government are going to work together, there are a lot of courts in the uk that are not being used and need a bit of work doing, so hopefully a lot of money will be put into those to get the courts and resources into a good space, so why not ride the wave we have got right now . Theres a lot of buzz around british tennis right now, so lets get those players on court. She has one Grand Slam under her belt, but what do you think of her potential . A difficult question so soon after, because it was a massive surprise. But why not . She will use this experience to learn from, like we saw from what happened at wimbledon, and to do it so soon and so young, she is going to get stronger, more robust, things can still improve. So the sky is the limit even though she is already there. I am alsojoined by sarah langford, a director at bromley tennis centre. What have you noticed from emmas run at wimbledon and now at the Us Open, what is the impact been on how much your phones have been ringing . We have seen an uptick in enquiries for sure, it was very similar when andy won his gold. But we are very excited that people are getting In Touch with us and other clubs across the country, a very exciting time for tennis. There is an Honours Board when you see that she won the under eights in the county championship. Could you have believed she has done what she has done now . Like matt said, a bit of a surprise, but so exciting for her, her team, those who have worked with her in the past, and also for the kids that are playing tennis and those who now want to take it up as a pastime. It isjust so exciting. Brilliant. A very difficult time for indoor venues like yourselves over the last year, and this could be a big boost for you. I think it will be, there was a lot of pent up energy after all the lockdowns, we already saw huge interest in tennis across the country on outdoor courts initially, but here also on indoor courts, and i think this will have the same impact. A hugely exciting day not just for Emma Raducanu but for british tennis as a whole, and a hugely important one as well for what could happen in the future off the back of her success. The British Government has ruled out introducing Coronavirus Vaccine passports in england for the time being. The Health Secretary, Sajid Javid, also told the bbc he did not expect the country to see any more lockdowns to fight the Covid I9 crisis. But he said the pandemic had not gone away and Vaccine Passports for entry to nightclubs and large events in england should be kept in reserve. Opposition politicians have accused the government of indecision on the issue. Our political Correspondent Ione wells has more. There has been a lot of back and forth and mixed messages from ministers over the last week or so about this. Just last week, vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi said that by The End of the month in england, Vaccine Passports would be needed for entry to nightclubs and other venues. Today, Health Secretary Sajid Javid has said he has considered the evidence and that will no longer be the case, they will not they will not be needed to entry for certain venues in england. Lets hear what he said earlier. I have never liked the idea of saying to people, you must show your papers for what is just an everyday activity, but we were right to properly look at it, to look at the evidence. But you are not doing it . We have looked at it properly, and whilst we should keep it in reserve as a potential option, i am pleased to say we will not be going ahead with plans for Vaccine Passports. A pretty definitive message from Sajid Javid that Vaccine Passports are not going ahead in england for entry to other venues. To recap, elsewhere in the uk, in scotland from the 1st of october, it is understood that Vaccine Passports will be needed for entry to some crowded venues, and in wales, a decision on this is expected next week. But returning to the situation in england, he has said that is not the plan and not something they are planning to bring forward to parliament, and judging by the reaction of shadow Health Secretaryjonathan ashworth this morning, it does not look as if labour are going to oppose the decision not to go ahead with them. I think people thought that Vaccine Passports i think people thought that Vaccine Passports would be the key to everything. The point about nightclubs and large events, you have to have all the measures in place, they have to be well ventilated and you have to have clean air, and we have been arguing for months now, particularly when it comes to school, put the clean Air Facilities in place which is relatively straightforward. So what we know now is that Vaccine Passports are off the table in england, and the prime minister is due to announce a raft of measures on tuesday for how the Uk Government does plan to tackle covid going into the winter, including things like the Roll Out of a Vaccine Booster programme, following advice from an independent committee, the jcvi, which we expect to come through on monday, about who will be eligible for that first wave of Vaccine Booster jabs. It is expected the elderly are among those who will be prioritised. It is also expected the prime minister will outline a couple of contingency measures the government is looking at, things like mask wearing, social distancing, possibly working from home, all things that the government may need to introduce if at any point the nhs is at risk of being overwhelmed again. But the government very keen to stress, as we heard from Sajid Javid earlier, that lockdowns are not something they want to consider, and they are repealing certain measures that were in that Coronavirus Emergency Piece of legislation introduced to give ministers new powers to tackle covid, including things like scrapping the powers that enabled them to shut businesses and close schools. So quite a different tone from the government as opposed to last winter, but certainly the Direction Of Travel is that they want christmas to go ahead as normal, they want this winter to be a winter of continuing to live with the virus, and certainly avoiding any kind of full lockdowns. Joining me from birmingham is Professor Lawrence young from warwick university. Thank you forjoining us. A lot of toing and froing, but no Faxing Passports in england for now anyway, what do you think . I passports in england for now anyway, what do you think . What do you think . I think this adds to a general what do you think . I think this adds to a general sense what do you think . I think this adds to a general sense of what do you think . I think this adds to a general sense of complacency. To a general sense of complacency around at the moment, and again to the confusing mixed messages we have been getting from government. A couple of days ago, the Vaccine Minister and the Culture Secretary told us there would be the introduction of Faxing Passports, and now it is not going to happen. I just think this is dangerous because it adds to the general sense that somehow the virus is under control when of course it is not. What somehow the virus is under control when of course it is not. What value is a vexing when of course it is not. What value is a vexing passport, when of course it is not. What value is a vexing passport, though, when of course it is not. What value is a vexing passport, though, when| is a vexing passport, though, when we know that being double vaccinated doesnt mean you will not get it and you will not pass it on when covid is still out there . I you will not pass it on when covid is still out there . Is still out there . I think part of the value here is still out there . I think part of the value here is is still out there . I think part of the value here isjust is still out there . I think part of the value here isjust demonstrating the value here is just demonstrating firstly that we are still in a pandemic, that we still have to be concerned about the virus and it spread, and secondly, it acts as a sort of incentive, and this is where it gets controversial, but we know that in france, for they have introduced the covid Community Pass to get into bars, pubs, restaurants, even the ride on buses, this created an enormous increase in people going ahead and getting vaccinated, and of course one of the big concerns we have, particularly about the younger generation, as they are not coming forward to the same extent to get vaccines. So it is trying to build in some way of incentivising it get fully jabbed. In some way of incentivising it get fullyjabbed. I5 in some way of incentivising it get fully jabbed fully jabbed. Is that the most sensible way fully jabbed. Is that the most sensible way to fully jabbed. Is that the most sensible way to try fully jabbed. Is that the most sensible way to try to fully jabbed. Is that the most. Sensible way to try to incentivise people, though, in a democracy, curbing Civil Liberties for reasons that could actually be dealt with in other ways . Other ways . Yeah, it is very controversial, other ways . Yeah, it is very controversial, no other ways . Yeah, it is very controversial, no Question L other ways . Yeah, it is very controversial, no question about it. And one of the things we have got to recognise is that we are seeing around 1000 deaths every week from covid, it is inevitable that we are going to see more infections over the next few weeks as a consequence of schools going back and people returning to work places, and we are dealing with a variant, a more infectious variant, and indeed with the threat of other variants. So i think we should have a very clear message and stop dithering. We have been dithering, for instance, that vaccinating the 12 to 15 year olds, and hoping this week, perhaps three months late but better late than never, that we will hear from government that we are going to vaccinate the 12 to 15 year olds. The pandemic in this country has been always associated, i think, with the government been very slow to make decisions, and as we know, and i heard it from the Health Secretary this morning, we are going to head to a very difficult time over the winter, and we need to do everything to protect ourselves, not a of vaccination but still being careful with the use of facemasks and ventilation in crowded spaces. Professor lawrence yun, thank you very much. Young. The release of the document follows a Day Of Remembrance to mark the 20th Anniversary of the September Eleventh attacks on the united states. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks, carried out by alqaeda islamists. Our correspondent in washington, nomia iqbal, reflects on a day of tributes. Last post plays. It was the last stop for president biden, to remember the day that changed america. He laid a wreath in washington after visiting all the sites where the terrorists struck. Bell tolls. At the start of the day, america paused for six moments of silence. It began at 8. A6am local time, when the first plane crashed into the north tower. And then the harrowing moment when the names of those who died were read out, One By one, nearly all 3,000 of them. Stephen bruce bunin. Andrew clive gilbert. My cousin, jenine nicole gonzalez. The thing i remember most about you is your smile, and the illustrious light of that smile continues to guide our family every single day. I ask that every single One Of Us here call upon the strength of our Loved Ones to help navigate us through tough times. Dennis m carey, senior. And my big brother. We love. He chokes up. We love and miss you every day. You will never be forgotten. After bravely rushing into danger that day, hundreds of First Responders who died were honoured at the Fire House in the city. President s past and present paid their respects, including the man who presided over the us at the time, george w bush. Like the current president , he talked about the importance of unity and contrasted America Today with The American then. When it comes to the unity of america, those days seem distant from our own. Malign force seems at work in our common life, that turns every disagreement into an argument, and every argument into a clash of cultures. So much of our politics has become a naked appeal to anger, fear and resentment. It was noticeable that former President Donald Trump did not attend the ceremony. He was born and raised in New York city. He did meet a group of new York Police officers and released a video during the ceremony criticising president joe biden. But the day belonged to the people whose lives were ruined by the events of 20 years ago, and while america is used to remembering 9 11 every year, large anniversaries like this have brought into sharp focus what was lost that day. Nomia iqbal, bbc news, New York. Pope francis has had a brief meeting in hungary with the countrys prime minister, Viktor Orban. The two men have radically different interpretations of what constitutes a christian approach to migration. The pontiff has severely criticised the reluctance of some European Leaders to take in refugees, but Mr Orban says hes defending christian europe. Our central Europe Correspondent Nick thorpe is in budapest. Ahead of this visit, both sides, the vatican and the hungarian government, were keen to smooth over any differences. The vatican stressed that this is above all a spiritual visit for the pope to celebrate mass in heroes square in hungary for Tens Of Thousands of christians, especially catholics, from around the world, the Closing Event, the climax of a week of the Eucharistic Congress, only held every four years. From the hungarian governments side, they have been keen to stress it is a great honour to have the pope in hungary even for such a short visit. But of course behind the scenes, there are huge differences between the two men. While the pope, from the start of his papacy, has stressed the need for europe, for christians in particular, to welcome people of otherfaiths, to help those in need, those fleeing from war and violence, Asylum Seekers and refugees, whereas Viktor Orban, as the head of the hungarian government, especially since 2015, has set himself up as a champion, as he puts it, of christian europe, of trying to keep europe as it is, and often that seems to be an anti islamic message. We also have a situation where just six months or so ahead of the hungarian elections, this visit is interesting to both sides, with Viktor Orban welcoming people and really seeking in some way some sort of support, for his policies, whereas the more liberal opposition here seeing this as a liberal pope, really, and posters have gone up all Over Budapest welcoming the pope as a champion of human dignity, human rights, of civil rights. So very different views here, the two men only had half an hour or so of talks before the meetings went ahead with the hungarian bishops, with people of other faiths, and then of course the big mass, the Closing Event of the Eucharistic Congress in budapest, and the pope then after this on his way to slovakia for the longer three day trip. As you can appreciate, this has been a huge concern for our industry for many weeks now since the announcement on the 19th that this was a potential. We have been working very hard lobbying behind the scenes, working alongside other trade bodies. Our members and to ensure that the government understands whether charges are with this, and we are strongly pleased they have decided to drop this, we can now focus on the future and we work towards building confidence with our workforce and our customers again, and reinforcing those communications, keeping people safe, as you could appreciate, because thatis as you could appreciate, because that is still an important part of our strategy moving forward as an industry. 50 our strategy moving forward as an indust. ,. ,. , industry. We have all of thatj many have taken on some of the toolkits as the government have narrated to them, which is around things like test and trace, the lateral flow testing, sanitation, management of staff, communication strategies, looking at ventilation upgrades, so many of these things have been looked at, but this is a Side By Side Basis Position in terms of the risk assessment. We were pleased when we heard this was the way the government would move forward, and as you can appreciate, with this update, we are pleased that we are going to be allowed to maintain that Position And Work as hard as we have worked, and we have proven that, given that the environments we have been able to create, the safety we have been able to treat for many of these people coming into our spaces, particularly for our staff. Coming into our spaces, particularly for ourstaff. Now coming into our spaces, particularly for our staff. Now we can focus on the future, which i think is really important, because this industry has been at the sharp end of this pandemic for a very long time. What pandemic for a very long time. What is the Evidence Pandemic for a very long time. What is the evidence been pandemic for a very long time. What is the evidence been in pandemic for a very long time. It has been very limited. As you can have been opened . It has been very limited. As you can appreciate, have been opened . It has been very limited. As you can appreciate, we | limited. As you can appreciate, we are having cases, but they are being managed appropriately. When the 19th came about, there were many suggestions we would see a spoke in cases, in infections, and mortality rates, that did not happen, contrary to clinicians and scientists, we did not see that at the point of people started to engage in our industry again, nothing that is just a clear narrative to the hard work that our industry has done. We have seen that industry has done. We have seen that in scotland, we saw an uplift in cases when the schools returned, similarly we will see that in england. So we are working hard still to ensure that we are creating safe spaces for people to come and enjoy social environments, we ask people to take some level social responsibility for that, but the key thing is that we are still focused on the public health strategy, but we are glad the government has some confidence that we can deliver as an industry, as we have done for many years in the past. find industry, as we have done for many years in the past years in the past. Weve got quite a mixture of weather coming up today. For many of us is going to be dry and bright with some sunny spells breaking through the cloud. However, its not going to be like that everywhere. For wales we have got outbreaks of rain on the way and some of that rain will probably push into parts of northern england. So we have already started to see this rain arrive in snowdonia, but the rain becomes much more extensive this afternoon across wales, getting into northern england, i think particularly around merseyside, greater manchester, the Northwest Midlands and i think some of this rain will pop across the pennines into areas of yorkshire so you could see some rain arriving later on in sheffield, for example. To the north of this, a lot of dry weather, a few showers for North East Scotland but its turning colder. To the south and east, some broken cloud and sunny spells. Temperatures reaching a high of up to 21. Overnight, more rain to come across wales, the midlands, some of the western areas of england. Scotland and northern ireland, meanwhile, turning really quite chilly. Indeed, in the countryside for North East Scotland, temperatures could get down to around three or four degrees. Thats your weather
