While there were two teenagers in the us open final, canadian Leylah Fernandez at the top of the screen, as early as the second game we saw intense rallies and we saw Emma Raducanu prevailing here. Both players settled immediately to display a full range of their abilities. Points were hard earned, skilfully won. Nerves . No sign. Two things were clear, we had a final worthy of the Occasion And Raducanu had the first set 64. And raducanu had the first set 6 4. She was broken early in the second set, broke back like that. Now fernandez was struggling to hold her serve, 44 years of waiting, one hour 51 on court and one more serve. It is right to realise what this means for british tennis but also for world tennis. It was an outstanding match and astounding champion. Really, its yours. Its all yours. These images will be the posters and the posts displayed for decades. If the point of sport is to uplift and to amaze, Emma Raducanu is already at the pinnacle. Joel wilson, bbc news. Our correspondent in New York, samira hussain, managed to catch up with winner Emma Raducanu and asked her if she understood how famous she is going to be when she gets home. Youve ever seen . The match was a very special one. The youve ever seen . The match was a very special one. The story a very special one. The story was the best Tennis Story i have ever seen and probably the best Sporting Story i have ever witnessed because for these two players to come through the drawer in the way they have, lets not forget Leylah Ferna Ndez lets not forget Leylah Fernandez is come doubly ranked outside the top 50 or at least was at the start of the us open. For her to come through and beat the defending Champion Naomi osaka, two of the top five players that reach the final was incredible in its own right and then we had the Emma Raducanu story, a qualifier, she played and did extremely well at wimbledon and her first Grand Slam by reaching the fourth round but if you win three matches in the Qualifying Drawer and those matches were played in quite high levels of Heat And Humidity in New York you are not expected to make great progress when the competition starts for real but raducanu did by winning those seven matches in straight sets. No one had won a grand Slam Title faster. It was a second Grand Slam, that has never been done before. Shes created all sorts of history and so unexpected even though lots of people in british tennis were excited about the player, they thought she was going to become, but several years down the line. ,. , the line. Indeed it was quite a spectacle the line. Indeed it was quite a spectacle. Billie the line. Indeed it was quite a spectacle. Billie jean the line. Indeed it was quite a spectacle. Billie Jean King the line. Indeed it was quite a | spectacle. Billie Jean King was spectacle. BillieJean King was there as well. With Emma Raducanu, as you say the Emma Raducanu, as you say the Emma Raducanu story, weve had not just play on the pitch but her resilience, her compassion, her ability to suck in Tennis Pros and just flabbergasted them, she is kind of a magnet for success in every way . She very much seems success in every way . She very much seems to success in every way . She very much seems to be success in every way . She very much seems to be at success in every way . She very much seems to be at the success in every way . She very much seems to be at the moment. That mental resilience just seems to be an innate part of her character, she credits her parents with the way they brought her up and who are we to argue . But she has been Fearless On Court as Leylah Fernandez was too. I think even players in their Mid 20s who were beaten by those two were quite envious of the fact they could play for such freedom and really go for their shots but mentally she is so, so strong and it is such a crucial part of professional sport and whatever happens in the future, i think we have to remember that her career is very much in its infancy, she will always have that and she certainly has the potential to go on and when other tournaments of this magnitude, but everyone needs to give i think both players a little bit of Breathing Space to enjoy the moment and to develop as professionals and people in their own right. Cant wait to see what happens next. Ceremonies have been taking place in the united states to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the September 11 attacks. In New York, a Minutes Silence marked the exact time that the first hijacked Plane Hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center in 2001. President biden travelled to pay his respects at all three attack sites, in New York, pennsylvania, and at the pentagon in virginia. As September 11th draws to a close in the us, our North America Editor Jon Sopel looks back on the days events. Drumbeat on this stunning clear september morning, they gathered in Solemnity And Sadness in lower manhattan. Oh, say, can you see by the dawn s early light. The weather identical to that fateful Tuesday Morning 20 years ago, but Everything Else was different. And the rockets red glare. At 8 46 this morning, the tolling of a bell. Bell rings the moment the first plane struck the twin towers. And the bells rang out at the pentagon. Bell rings. And shanksville, pennsylvania. Bell rings. The other sites of the 9 11 Terrorist Attacks. Gordon m aamoth junior. Edelmiro abad. And then the haunting, Harrowing Recitation of the names of those who died. Ronald philip kloepfer. And my husband, joseph reina junior. And my uncle, james francis quinn. With the readers pausing to pay tribute to their loved ones. Continue to watch over us and your family. 20 years feels like an eternity, but yet it still feels like yesterday. Until we meet again, my love, rest in peace. The president , whos visited all three of the 9 11 sites, today spoke about the significance of the commemorations. These memorials are really important. But theyre also incredibly difficult for the people who were affected by them. Because it brings back that moment they got the phone call. It brings back that instant you got the news. I can hear you, the rest of the world he is you and george w bush, who was president in 2001, contrasted America Today with america then. So much of our politics has become a naked appeal to anger, fear and resentment. That leaves us worried about our nation, and our future together. I come without explanations or solutions. I can only tell you what ive seen. On Americas Day of trial and grief, i saw millions of people instinctively grab for a Neighbours Hand and rally to the cause of one another. That is the america i know. But today belongs to the people whose lives were rent by these unfathomable acts. I was sleeping when the first tower hit, and my mom woke me up because my dad worked there, so. He was a victim, and i saw the second Plane Hit and ijust hopped in my car. I was here the next morning. He sobs excuse me. You cant ever explain this horrible thing. You know, and you re live it every year, but, i mean, i think for the families its worse. For hour after hour, Family Members read the Alphabetical List of names of those who perished. On anniversaries, New York can feel a kinder, less harsh place to be. Very little unites this divided country at the moment. But the Sorrow And Pain of that day 20 years ago still does, more or less. Jon sopel, bbc news, New York. Later in the programme we will hearfrom one man who is still dealing with the Health Effects from 9 11 20 years dealing with the Health Effects from 9 1120 years ago. In other news, the bbc understands that lawyers for Prince Andrew are challenging a claim that Court Papers, relating to allegations of sexual assault, have been properly served. Representatives of Virginia Giuffre, who has made the claims, say that they were lodged correctly. A usjudge will decide if the case can proceed on monday. The Duke Of York has always strongly denied the accusations. Our royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell reports. Royal lodge, Prince Andrews home in windsor great park. It was here two weeks ago that a representative of Virginia Giuffres american lawyers attempted to serve the Court Papers on Prince Andrew. This is the official s affidavit. In it, he describes how at 9 30 on the 26th Of August he presented himself to the Police Officers guarding the property. He says it appeared. The official left, but returned the following day, when, according to the affidavit, he was. The official said he asked to meet Prince Andrew personally, but he was told that this was not possible. At the heart of this is the claim by Virginia Giuffre virginia roberts, as she was who alleges that she was sexually assaulted by Prince Andrew when she was 17 years old. Prince andrew has categorically and consistently denied the claim. I have no recollection of ever meeting this lady. None whatsoever. You dont remember meeting her . Nope. Buckingham palace is saying absolutely nothing, other than to emphasise that this is entirely a matter for Prince Andrew and his lawyers. His lawyers tactics appear to be to keep as low a profile as possible for themselves and for their client, while intimating that the Court Papers have not been served properly. It will now be for a judge in a new York District court on monday to decide whether the papers have been served and whether Virginia Giuffres civil case can continue. Nicholas witchell, bbc news. Youre watching bbc news, a reminder of our top stories british 18 year old, Emma Raducanu, wins the us open, in one of the most dramatic victories in modern tennis. Memorial services have been held across the united states to mark 20 years since the Terror Attack of 9 11. The events of 9 11 in 2001 were a defining moment for the world, leading to the us invasion of afghanistan, and the overthrow of the taliban, accused of harbouring the terrorists. With the taliban now back in control, our Correspondent Secunder kermani reports from kabul on how 9 11 is remembered there. At this busy market in the west of kabul today, few knew it was the anniversary of the 9 11 attacks. Some simply had no idea what had happened in New York 20 years ago. For others, memories of the tragedy there are steeped in afghanistans own struggles. People affected in 9 11 are also human beings. It does concern. I mean, still we are suffering from those things that have been throughout those 20 years. We have suffered more than 9 11 in afghanistan. The americans, when they came here, they have changed our life. Everything has changed. For the first time, the girls, you know, the school for the girls have improved. Now how do you see the future . Well, i think if it goes like this, it will be difficult for afghans to live in afghanistan. As you see, a lot of afghans are going out of the country. Two decades after they were overthrown, the talibans flags flutter across the city once again. Their banner, now in front of sites where western missions were once based. Behind this gate is what used to be the american embassy. In front of it, taliban flags are on sale. In fact, you can see a group of fighters who have just purchased some. For many in america this will be a deeply distressing sight. Questions are already being asked about what the last 20 years of war here really achieved. The us did manage to largely defeat alqaeda in afghanistan. The taliban insist they will never allow anyone to plot Terrorist Attacks from here again. But their victory has emboldened hardliners. This man is not part of the taliban. But he has come here to celebrate their conquest over what he terms the corrupt previous government, which had been backed by the us. The 9 11 anniversary might not mean much for people here. But its legacy is something the country is still grappling with. Decades of war are finally over. Can the future be more peaceful than the past . Secunder kermani, bbc news, kabul. Lets stay with that now. Survivor Mark Goldwasser was working near the World Trade Center on September 11th 2001. He described some of what he witnessed that day. The day is forever seared into my memory. I was at a brokerage on 120 wall st, directly across from the World Trade Center. I heard that a small plane had hit the World Trade Center, the North Building and i quickly moved to our Conference Room which had an expansive view of the fire and both World Trade Centers. It was a beautiful day like today. Magnificent weather. I opened the window and in the 15 minutes between the first and second plane, all of downtown New York was filled with sirens, police boats, and i remember paper, A4 Paper flying everywhere. That is what i remembered. It was like a Tickertape Parade and i knew there was no parade that day. And then we heard the sound of a jet coming straight at us and at the last moment the plane veered and crashed into the second building and then i knew something terrible was amiss and it was time to evacuate as quickly as possible. And how did you get out . Myself and one of my friends, first we evacuated two floors of our office. A mandatory evacuation and we walked down 30 floors and because the building is an old building, there was a subway, a Lexington Subway Stop and we jumped on the subway and went to Grand Central and i was fortunately on the last train out of manhattan. I made it home to westchester. That moment of seeing that Aeroplane Heading towards you must have been terrifying and i am sure there were psychological consequences, but it was the physical ones who came back to haunt you when you to the office shortly afterwards. Tell us about that. Downtown was quarantined for two weeks and then the secretary of the epa, the Ex Governor had said that she declared downtown was open for business and we moved back into the offices. Because i had left in such a rush and because i had left, i opened the Conference Room window, there was one inch of carcinogenic white stuff, lets say, that had blown into the Conference Room and gone all over the office. So the office was covered in White Dust. And when did you realise that spending time in the office with that White Dust had affected your body . What happened was about ten years later i was on a rollercoaster in Las Vegas and i broke my back on the rollercoaster. I returned to New York and i got treatment and i was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and then i started dealing with the multiple myeloma, and that was 11 years ago. What treatments have you had . Everyone calls me and says i look great but i have broken my back three times, i have had two Stem Cell transplants, i have been in a number of trials and right now i am in a trial at Mount Sinai in new York City specifically for multiple myeloma. It is a Phase I Trial and so far, thank god, results have been good. You did receive compensation, didnt you . Yes. There was a fireman who passed away called zadroga. The fund was set up in his name and i received the zadroga 9 11 fund. What do you think of the us response after the Terrorist Attacks and how they have dealt with things since. How does that make you feel . There is a sense of Deja Vu where you think everything has changed but nothing has. 20 years later we have the same kind of day, the same kind of day when 9 11 happened. My thoughts are that the people of this country are better than the government of this country and we have been let down by our government on a number of situations linked to 9 11. I mentioned to you the epa said that downtown New York was basically, was, that the air was clean and for everyone to return to work when really there was a Carcinogen Bomb that hit all of downtown New York. We still have the same problem with islamic fundamentalism. It sounds like we have not really gone anywhere in terms of the fundamental issues and problems. Nothing has changed in 20 years.
