Good evening. Ceremonies have taken place in the united states of america to mark 20 years since the September The 11th terror attacks. The ceremony in New York started with a Minutes Silence at the exact time, the first plane, hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center in 2001 and the names of the nearly 3,000 people who were killed there, were read out. President biden travelled to all three Attack Sites New York, pennsylvania, and the pentagon in virginia. The former president , george w bush, attended a memorial to the passengers and crew of united Airlines Flight 93, who fought off hijackers whilst flying over pennsylvania. He spoke in shanksville, where that fourth plane came down. 20 years ago, we all found in different ways, in different places, but all at the same moment, that our lives would be changed for ever. The world was loud with carnage and sirens, and then quiet with missing voices that would never be heard again. These lives remain precious to our country and infinitely precious to many of you. Today, we remember your loss, we share your sorrow, and we honour the men and women you have loved so long and so well. For those too young to recall that clear september day, it is hard to describe the mix of feelings we experienced. There was horror at the scale of Destruction And Awe at the Bravery And Kindness that rose to meet it. There was shock at the audacity of evil, and gratitude for the Heroism And Decency that opposed it. In the sacrifice of the first responders and the mutual aid of strangers and the solidarity of grief and grace, the actions of an enemy revealed the spirit of a people. And we were proud of our wounded nation. In these memories, the passengers and crew of flight 93 must always have an honoured place. Here, the intended targets became the instruments of rescue, and many who are now alive owe an unconscious debt to the defiance displayed in the skies above this field. It would be a mistake to idealise the experience of those terrible events. All that many people could initially see was the brute randomness of death. All that many could feel was suffering. Hear was gods terrible silence. There are many who still struggle with a lonely pain that cuts deep within. In those fateful hours, we learned other lessons as well. We saw that americans were vulnerable but not fragile, that they possess a core of strength that survives the worst that life can bring. We learned that bravery is more common than we imagined, emerging with sudden splendour in the face of death. We vividly felt how every hour with our Loved Ones was a temporary and holy gift. And we found that even the longest days end. And the us Vice President , kamala harris, called for unity. We will face new challenges, challenges that we could not have seen 20 years ago. We will seize opportunities that were at one time unimaginable. And we know that what lies ahead is not certain, it is never certain, it has never been. But i know this, if we do the hard work, of working together as americans, if we remain united in purpose, we will be prepared for whatever comes next. The a0 passengers and crewmembers of flight 93, as we all know they did not know each other, they were different people from different places, they were on that particular flight for different reasons. But they did not focus on what may separate us, no, they focused on what we all share. 0n the humanity we all share. In a matter of minutes, in the most dire of circumstances, the a0 responded as one. They fought for their own lives and to save the lives of countless others at our nations capital. After today, it is my Hope And Prayer that we continue to honour their courage, their conviction, with their own, that we honour their unity by strengthening our common bonds, by strengthening our global partnerships and by always living out our highest ideals. Sir Christopher Meyer was the Uk Ambassador to the us at time of the attacks. He told me about his memories of the day. I memories of the day. Was having breakfast on the morning i was having breakfast on the morning of 9 11 with the former Prime Ministerjohn major and it was while we were sitting there drinking our coffee that we had heard a plane had Hit One of the twin towers. 0ur had Hit One of the twin towers. Our first reaction to the first class was that this was a private pilot perhaps who had lost his way and had crashed into one of the towers. It was only 20 minutes later, whenever that was, when the second aircraft to the second tower that we realised that this was something of enormous significance, both of the united states, and notjust for the americans, but for the world at large. Americans, but for the world at lare,. ,. , americans, but for the world at lare. ,. , americans, but for the world at lare. ,. ,. ,. , americans, but for the world at lare,. ,. ,. ,. , large. So, at that point, what was the main priority large. So, at that point, what was the main priority then . Large. So, at that point, what was the main priority then . The large. So, at that point, what was the main priority then . The main| the main priority then . The main riori the main priority then . The main priority was the main priority then . The main priority was to the main priority then . The main priority was to find the main priority then . The main priority was to find out the main priority then . The main priority was to find out what the main priority then . The main priority was to find out what had | priority was to find out what had happened. Followed by is the threat still there or is that it . And the only way i could find out what was going on was by speaking to the americans and this was not a time when senior americans who were in the know were easily to get hold of because everyone was running for cover and taking refuge in various bunkers around washington, dc. But in that morning, i managed to get hold of the national Security Security Adviser kaunda lisa rice, as she told me immediately that the submission was, the sub Prime Suspect was alqaeda under the leadership of a summer bin laden. There were some mention of iraq there as a possibility but she said it was something i had to be discussed later on. The first thing to establish was the responsibility, was the threat still there. For a while, we bought another plane was coming towards washington, dc. I mean, it was, and it hit the pentagon and that hit home, you know, very hard indeed, because the pentagon is only very few miles from the embassy, as the crow flies. Some people heard the noise of the plane hitting the pentagon. And we all smelt the Drifting Odour of kerosene burning Aircraft Fuel coming up from the pentagon over the river towards us in the embassy. But it wasnt until the aircraft that crashed in the field in pennsylvania we were told by the americans as far as they could say, as far as they could tell, the attack was over. And then i had to decide what to do with the embassy staff, to keep them in the embassy, to send them back home. I chose in The End you send them back home. And then of course the other thing was to maintain communications not only with the united states at senior level but also with london and 10 downing street. {iii senior level but also with london and 10 downing street. Of course, there were and 10 downing street. Of course, there were the and 10 downing street. Of course, there were the british and 10 downing street. Of course, there were the british nationals i and 10 downing street. Of course, there were the british nationals to j there were the british nationals to look after, and their families. Well, not yet, not on that first day. On that first day, we had to establish, immediately, or rather i should say as fast as possible, where their brits in the twin towers . If so, how many . How many had disappeared . And i took a few days to find out and we could not have died without the help of the New York authorities. And it was only a few days later that we had to make plans, have everything in place for the arrival of relatives and friends, Loved Ones of those who had disappeared in the twin towers, to try and help them establish whether they had lost relatives or not. And that was the most, i have to say, the most harrowing moment for me personally was not on the day of 9 11, it was when brits starting arriving in the united states in new York City to try and find out what had happened to their Loved Ones. That was a very difficult time. This week, we heard that was a very difficult time. This week, we heard from that was a very difficult time. This week, we heard from mi5s ken week, we heard from mis s ken mccallum, and he was talking about the Terrorism Threat to the united kingdom, and the way in which that had transformed over the years, over the decades. You said there was this knowledge of a summer bin laden, he was known to the security services, was known to the security services, was there a surprise that an attack of this scale happened to mark i mean, was something expected . Weill. Mean, was something expected . Well, somethin mean, was something expected . Well, something was mean, was something expected . Well, something was expected mean, was something expected . Ii something was expected but we only know this now, we did not know this at the time. I certainly was not expecting a Terrorist Attack on mainland united states. Ive got to say to you that the night before 9 11, i had, forsupper say to you that the night before 9 11, i had, for supper in the embassy, the national security advisor, kaunda lisa rice, and tony blairs new policy adviser, and we discussed all the issues around the world which affected our interest, british interest in american interest and i gotta say to you, international terrorism is not very high on the agenda. So, although i think inside us Intelligence Establishment and inside the uk Intelligence Establishment there was some knowledge that a big attack was coming up in the united states, it was not something at the time, at the forefront of our concerns and priorities in the embassy. Intelligence sharing, obviously, became paramount at this time and over the years, we havejust expected that this is taking place, automatically. How would you describe the state of intelligence today, particularly after what we have seen take place in afghanistan . Well, the thing about intelligence, Intelligence Agencies work secretly. I am no longer a member of the british diplomatic service, i am no longer a Working British ambassador in the foreign office, i cannot tell you that i am privy to the secrets of mi6 and the cia and their various subdivisions. What i would say to you, though, is that when people talk about Special Relationship between the us and the united kingdom, which i personally am not terribly enthusiastic about, one of the areas where we work unbelievably closely, weed the brits work unbelievably closely with united states, as opposed to any country in the world, is on intelligence. You can be pretty sure that any time of the day or night, british intelligence, us intelligence are working very closely together. But raw intelligence, then analysed and then passed on to governments and politicians, that can become something quite different. You may have an agent in the field discover something really significant but by the time that piece on intelligence is processed, homogenised, passes through all the levels and finally arrives on the desk of the Prime Minister or the president , it may be something quite different. So, youve got to be very careful how youve got to be very careful how you took that intelligence because there are not many people who really know what is going on. Sir christopher mair, there. Andy card was president Bushs Chief of staff on 9 11, and had to interrupt the commander in chief as he read to schoolchildren to tell them that a second plane had hit the twin towers. Hes been speaking to our North America correspondent, jon sopel. Im standing at the door to the classroom with a president and the principle of the school. A Navy Captain came up to the president and said, sir, Itappears Captain came up to the president and said, sir, it appears a small twin Engine Plane crashed into one of the towers in the World Trade Center in new York City. The principle a bit of a classroom and she and the president walked into the classroom, the door shut. It appears it was not a small twin Engine Plane, it was a commercialjet liner. 0h, twin Engine Plane, it was a commercialjet liner. Oh, my god. Another plane hit the other tower at the World Trade Center in new York City. That is when i walked up to the president and i leaned down and i whispered to him, a second plane hit the second tower, america is under attack. Are you aware that this is a kind of decisive moment decisions. Are you aware that this is a kind of decisive moment in i is a kind of decisive moment in american history, in World History . I knew that i was delivering an historic message to the president , and i knew that the picture that was taken of me whispering in the present s here was an iconic photograph. It defined an era, and that day changed the world. It certainly changed the united states, and i want people to remember the photograph because it gave us a day where we accepted an obligation to never forget those people who died that day, almost 3000 people who died that day. And the heroes that showed up to respond and the people that signed up to serve our country and the world in the subsequent days. And the world in the subsequent Da S. I am unravelling, may now, arent they the world forgetting . The world forgetting . I am very troubled by the world forgetting . I am very troubled by what the world forgetting . I am very troubled by what is the world forgetting . I am very troubled by what is happening l the world forgetting . I am very troubled by what is happening with regard to the withdrawal of afghanistan by the us and its nato allies right now. I am troubled by it because it is compromising our ability to make sure younger generations know that we made a promise, neverto generations know that we made a promise, never to forget, wiley went afghanistan the first place, and that we made the World A Safer place by going to afghanistan. But if that we made the World A Safer place by going to afghanistan. By going to afghanistan. But if that was a moment by going to afghanistan. But if that was a moment where by going to afghanistan. But if that was a moment where the by going to afghanistan. But if that was a moment where the world by going to afghanistan. But if that l was a moment where the world said by going to afghanistan. But if that was a moment where the world said we are with you, united states of america, spool forward 20 years, are we seeing The End of american greatness . Because america is leaving afghanistan with its tail between its legs. I do leaving afghanistan with its tail between its legs. Leaving afghanistan with its tail between its legs. I do think it has been a defeat between its legs. I do think it has been a defeat for between its legs. I do think it has been a defeat for the between its legs. I do think it has been a defeat for the pride between its legs. I do think it has been a defeat for the pride of been a defeat for the Pride Of America and the respect that we have had around the world. So, i am very troubled that the world is witnessing us banding abandoning a Success Story that was still a work in progress. And we have done it in such a way that we are not keeping the promise that we made too many afghanis. Where we said if you help us, we will help you. And we are abandoning them. 50. Help us, we will help you. And we are abandoning them. Help us, we will help you. And we are abandoning them. So, when you look at the are abandoning them. So, when you look at the events are abandoning them. So, when you look at the events of are abandoning them. So, when you look at the events of january are abandoning them. So, when you look at the events of january the look at the events of january the six, the insurrection at their capital, you look at the way american forces have come out of afghanistan chaotically, is america tarnished . I afghanistan chaotically, is america tarnished . ,. , tarnished . I think we are still the createst tarnished . I think we are still the greatest democracy tarnished . I think we are still the greatest democracy in tarnished . I think we are still the greatest democracy in the tarnished . I think we are still the greatest democracy in the history tarnished . I think we are still the i greatest democracy in the History Of The World but we are not shining the way we used to shine. And, yes, we are tarnished. We are not as worthy of the expectations that we had in the past and we have got to work hard to improve the nature of our democracy in orderfor hard to improve the nature of our democracy in order for others to say i want to have it as well.
