The president , who is visiting all the 9 11 sites today, released this message. And George W Bush, who was president in 2001, contrasted America Today with america then. So much of our politics has become a naked appeal to anger, fear and resentment. 0n Americas Day of trial and grief, i saw millions of people instinctively grab for a Neighbours Hand and rally to the cause of one another. That is the america i know. But today belongs to the people whose lives were rent by these unfathomable acts. I was sleeping when the first tower hit, and my mum woke me up because my dad worked there, so. He was a victim, and i saw the second Plane Hit and ijust hopped in my car. I was here the next morning. He sobs excuse me. You cant ever explain this horrible thing. You know, and you i re live it every year, but, i mean, ithink for the families its worse. Tis grace has brought me safe thus far. 0n anniversaries, america can feel a kinder, less harsh place to be, but though the united states may still be united in Grief And Sorrow by the events of 9 11, its not united by much else. Yes, today has been a theyre at the memorial . Yes, today has been a really theyre at the memorial . Yes, today has been a really sombre theyre at the memorial . Yes, today has been a really sombre occasion, l has been a really sombre occasion, americans are used to marking 9 11 but today, given it is the big anniversary, it is really focused peoples minds about what happened. Everyone wants to talk to you about where they were that day. I spoke to one man who is a retired firefighter, he had on his full suit, though, and he spoke about how although it is so long ago, he remembers every second of that day. He started crying and couldnt finish a sentence, he was not overcome with emotion. It is also interesting that those people dont remember 9 11 because they were so young, i spoke to three teenagers who were just near ground zero, obviously the roads are blocked off but they could see what was going on, they could see the security and i said it was important for them to be here because when it comes to 9 11, to something they had seen, documentaries, they read about the news, they have heard from their parents. 0ne news, they have heard from their parents. One girl said she was wanted to be here to see for herself and have our own recollection and her own moments to mark 9 11. And. Her own moments to mark 9 11. And, nomia, her own moments to mark 9 11. And, nomia. One her own moments to mark 9 11. And, nomia, one person her own moments to mark 9 11. And, nomia, one person who her own moments to mark 9 11. And, nomia, one person who notably was missing from this mornings official commemorations was former President Donald Trump but he did make a surprise visit, didnt he, to first responders here in New York. What responders here in New York. What has he been responders here in New York. What has he been saying . Responders here in New York. Twat has he been saying . That responders here in New York. Wiat has he been saying . That is responders here in New York. Wiegt has he been saying . That is right, and it is Worth Remembering that President Trump, former President Trump is from New York. He is born and raised here and yes, he was absent from the official ceremony, that didnt stop him from releasing a video during the ceremony in which he really laid into President Biden, but as you mentioned there, he didnt meet a group of Police Officers a New York in which he praised them, and he met stam. We saw the video of that earlier. But it was interesting because President Trump is someone, sadly when i was walking around New York, as a person that still commands a lot of loyalty. When President Bidens motorcade went past this morning, there was one man near to me who shouted at the motorcade and really harsh criticisms of President Biden and he said he blamed President Biden for the pandemic, he was loyal to trump, he repeated unsubstantiated claims about the election being stolen from President Trump so you do have those kinds of protests in the city but over all, i dont think it has really overshadowed Todays Occasion where we see those really emotional and moving speeches given by the families of the victims. I think it would be great but on 9 11, we had a common enemy, we all felt threatened which is why we all pulled together, and there was no political bickering about it. Not until later on when other things came up. So, it has got to be a condition and you dont want an attack like this to have to create that condition. Apologies, we lost communication with laura. Let me show you pictures coming in from the pentagon, this is President Biden and his wife attending a memorial service, laying a wreath to remember those killed in that attack when a Plane Hit the Pentagon Building on that fateful day 20 years ago on 9 11. Lets Cross Life now to Guantanamo Bay. A us Military Base established as a Detention Centre in 2002 by George W Bush to house accused islamic terrorists believed to have been involved in the 11th September Attacks on the us. Over the past 20 years, the base has become notorious for allegations of Torture And Mistreatment against inmates. The bbc s North America Correspondent Aleem Maqbool is there and joins me now. It is extremely controversial, Guantanamo Bay, the man accused of masterminding the 9 11 attacks is still awaiting trial, all these years on. What do you think is the mood that today . And the sense of what the future holds for the people, the inmates there that remain . ,. , , remain . Yes, it is not ust highly Sheikh Mohammed remain . Yes, it is notjust highly Sheikh Mohammed who remain . Yes, it is notjust highly Sheikh Mohammed who is remain . Yes, it is notjust highly Sheikh Mohammed who is here | remain . Yes, it is notjust highly i Sheikh Mohammed who is here but remain . Yes, it is notjust highly Sheikh Mohammed who is here but for others who were implicated in the plot. He is believed to have conceived of the idea of the attacks, taken it to some of and then subsequently planned the attacks but also another man is alleged to have trained two of the hijackers. Ramzi Bin Al Shed is thought to have run the Handbag Sale of the operation the Hamburg Cell of the operation the Hamburg Cell of the operation and two others who are thought to have provided financial and logistical support to the attackers. These are five of the man who it is alleged to played a big role in a lot of that loss and they are here and itjust so happens that over the last few days, they have made their first appearances in a Court Room for more than 18 months. The legal proceedings were stalled because of the coronavirus pandemic. Alongside us in the gallery were Family Members of victims of 9 11 who were observing events, including when i spoke to, dr elizabeth berry, who talked in a Memorial Event earlier today about her Brother Billy who had been a firefighter who died when the North Tower collapsed, and she said there was no way she would rather be for this 20th Anniversary than Guantanamo Bay watching the legal proceedings and seeing the search forjustice. It doesnt get any better than being in Guantanamo Bay on the 20th Anniversary, being part of the first group of people back into the Court Room to see the proceedings start over again, see a newjudge, post pandemic, and get to talk to your brother, to a whole naval station, you know, of military heroes. Its pretty cool. And it doesnt get better because youre optimistic about where things are going and the fact that things have restarted. I feel. Yeah, i am very honoured that people are interested in listening to my brothers story, im very proud of him. And im optimistic because we are starting again. For a while, there, i thought i might die of old age before we ever came to the conclusion of this trial. Now im beginning to think i have a chance. I may actually see the end of it. So, dr barry, talking about her optimism and things moving forward. Dr berry. This is the pre trial. We still dont have a Court Date for the trial itself. The we still dont have a Court Date for the trial itself. The trial itself. The presence of the trial itself. The presence of the presence the trial itself. The presence of the presence there the trial itself. The presence of the presence there is the trial itself. The presence of| the presence there is extremely controversial, we know many people were tortured there, why is it still in existence . Why are those prisoners being kept there . Well, there are 39 prisoners being kept there . Well, there are 39 people prisoners being kept there . Well, there are 39 people still prisoners being kept there . Ii there are 39 people still here. There was a peak of around 780 boys and men who were here at one stage. A lot of them over the last 20 years have of course been transferred to various countries. But there are ten of those 39 who have been cleared for transfer and could potentially be released in the coming months, some of those, though, were cleared for transfer as far back as 2010. But after that, the us authorities have a more difficult conundrum because there are 29 people, some of them by the fire we have until the man earlier, are going through these military commissions, alleged to have been involved in terrorist attacks, and others, the us says, will never be three because they pose such a threat to the us. Never be free. Politically, it is whether conundrum has been but that issue of torture that has loomed large over this place has been a huge problem in the legal process because there are those who say, well, if any of the evidence gained against these defendants came through torture, then it shouldnt be admissible. So, there are still those wrangles going on so up so long after the end of the attacks and that is one of the principal reasons why a resolution to the case of the five people implicated in the 9 11 plot is not expected, even in the coming years. 9 11 plot is not expected, even in the coming years. Thank you. Lets return to laura the coming years. Thank you. Lets return to laura in the coming years. Thank you. Lets return to laura in new the coming years. Thank you. Lets return to laura in New York. Return to laura in New York. Lets bring you live pictures from the pentagon where President Biden is attending a memorial service. He has been to all three Memorial Services that are being held today. He was here in New York this morning at the official commemoration for those who lost their lives here. Then he went to shanks bell, pennsylvania, and there he laid a wreath at the site where Flight 93 was brought down by the passengers who overpowered the passengers. Whoever powered the hijackers. He is there with the first ladyjill biden, and with the Vice President kamala harris. They are there with the us Defence Secretary lloyd austen, this is very solemn moment for the pentagon. The 9 11 attacks launch the us War On Terror in which more than 2000 us soldiers lost their lives in the afghanistan, there was also the war that was launched in iraq. And then orjust before the us withdrawal from afghanistan on august the 31st, 13 us service members lost their lives there, outside the airport in kabul in the chaotic us exit from afghanistan, trying to protect people who wanted to be edited out of the country. So, this, a very sombre day for the pentagon and present biden, who was talking to some of the relatives who lost people a 911 who told me they met President Biden this morning and that they found him to be very empathetic about their own loss because he lost his son Beau Biden from Brain Cancer and the president talks about his own loss when he is meeting with those who are bereaved. And you can see there that President Biden has been not making public Remarks Today but he did release a statement last night in which he said that America Mac greatest strength is its unity. And this is something that former president George W Bush 32 today, in this very polarised climate here in the united states, politically, especially after the attacks on the us capital on January The 6th when after the attacks on the us Capital Onjanuary the 6th when rioters who believe the election was stolen from President Trump attacked the us capital. President bush present W Bush drew A Line between extremis and the us hijackers saying that they shared an intolerance. And present biden asked about president George W Bushs speech, said he agreed with him. And kamala harris, pictured there, she was also talk about how unity was americas greatest strength. So, there we have the Pentagon Memorial there, the president visiting the place where 184 people lost their lives 20 years ago on september the 11th. Samantha, now back to you in london. Laura, thank you very much. We will have more from Laura A little later this hour. Now, lets take a look at some of the other top stories today. The bbc understands that lawyers for Prince Andrew are challenging a claim that Court Papers relating to allegations against him of Sexual Assault have been properly served. Representatives of Virginia Giuffre, who has made the claims, say that they were. A us judge will decide if the case can proceed on monday. The Duke Of York has always strongly denied the accusations. 0ur royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell reports. Royal lodge, Prince Andrews home in windsor great park. It was here two weeks ago that a representative of Virginia Giuffres american lawyers attempted to serve the Court Papers on Prince Andrew. This is the official s affidavit. In it, he describes how at 9 30 on the 26th Of August he presented himself to the Police Officers guarding the property. He says it appeared. The official left, but returned the following day, when, according to the affidavit, he was. The official said he asked to meet Prince Andrew personally, but he was told that this was not possible. At the heart of this is the claim by Virginia Giuffre virginia roberts, as she was who alleges that she was sexually assaulted by Prince Andrew when she was 17 years old. Prince andrew has categorically and consistently denied the claim. I have no recollection of ever meeting this lady. None whatsoever. You dont remember meeting her . No. Buckingham palace is saying absolutely nothing, other than to emphasise that this is entirely a matter for Prince Andrew and his lawyers. His lawyers tactics appear to be to keep as low a profile as possible for themselves and for their client, whilst intimating that the Court Papers have not been served properly. It will now be for a judge in a new York District court on monday to decide whether the papers have been served and whether Virginia Giuffres civil case can continue. Nicholas witchell, bbc news. Now to tennis. In the Us Open finals 19 year old unseeded canadian Leylah Fernandez is playing against the british qualifier Emma Raducanu, whos a year younger. Emma raducanu has three Break Points against Leylah Fernandez who came out starting three may, she hit a winner in the very first Point But Raducanu did what she has done all the way through this tournament, she kept her composure and started to break down her opponent, and she has got the early opportunities here. There is incredible excitement around this game, isnt there . It feels like the new generation coming through, what you think by the mix of pressure on both of them reaching the first Grand Slam final but also possible expectation . Id the first Grand Slam final but also possible expectation . Possible expectation . Id have to sa one possible expectation . Id have to say one of possible expectation . Id have to say one of the possible expectation . Id have to say one of the lovely possible expectation . Id have to say one of the lovely things possible expectation . Id have to| say one of the lovely things about this final and this run of these two players is that they dont talk about pressure, they look as though they dont feel pressure, and i think the fact that Emma Raducanu is 18 years of age and 150 in the world, she is a novice, really, at this level, shes just that good that she has managed to get a fine and a second Grand Slam tournament, and a second Grand Slam tournament, and Leylah Fernandez isjust and a second Grand Slam tournament, and Leylah Fernandez is just a year older and 73 in the world, they are going about it as if it is just fun. They did a Rematch Interview before coming out onto the court, the biggest Tennis Stadium in the world, they talk about going onto the court and having fun. So far, in the early stages here, they have come out hitting their shots and going for it, and it is really great to see. Which is how you would hope it would be but it so often isnt. Raducanu hasnt dropped a set in a nine match as she has played in the tournament. And this is a difficult one but what do you reckon, who could have the Upper Hand here . It is do you reckon, who could have the Upper Hand here . Upper hand here . It is such a difficult one Upper Hand here . It is such a difficult one to Upper Hand here . It is such a difficult one to call, Upper Hand here . It is such a difficult one to call, for Upper Hand here . It is such a difficult one to call, for so i Upper Hand here . It is such a i difficult one to call, for so many reasons, not least of the fact that neither one of them have ever been on a stage like this. They have got no experience, we dont have much history to look into to try to work out what might happen. You can only really go on this Fortnight And Raducanu has won all of their matches straightforwardly, fernandez has won some incredible matches against big name players but they have all been fights, battles. I feel that Emma Raducanu is marginally the favourite to win but thatis marginally the favourite to win but that is really not based on anything other than a feeling based on what we have seen throughout the two weeks. It could be very close, it could be very exciting. Bill weeks. It could be very close, it could be very exciting. Weeks. It could be very close, it could be very exciting. Youre watching special coverage of the anniversary of september 11th. Laura is there. Events commemorating 20 years since the 9 11 attacks have been taking place in the us. The ceremony in New York included a Minutes Silence at the exact time the first Plane Hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center in 2001, and the names of the nearly 3,000 people who were killed there were read out. President biden is travelling to all three attack sites New York, pennsylvania, and the pentagon in virginia. With more on the days events, heres our north Iv E been talking to some of the relatives who died that day. Paula berry, who lost her husband in the attacks, and paula was the representative of the relatives on the jury who selected the memorial design. Today is full of meaning for her. I spoke to her earlier. Still very much there. I was struck by how everyone really, you know, obviously are missing their Loved Ones but they feel they are still with them. You know, so many people spoke about guardian angels. So many people spoke as if the person is very much still alive and watching over them. So, that is raw but it is also indicates that people have moved on and that they have integrated their loved one in their life. And on this 20th Anniversary of the 9 11 attacks, we have heard a lot of calls for a return to that unity. Isnt that something . Yes. Do you feel that . Well, ifeel that way, and in fact, if there is something that the memorial could stand for, it is not only the 9 11 and the event of the day, which historically will always be remembered, but it was the one time that the world all came together, and it really did come together. And we, as human beings, have the capacity to come together. So, yes, i understand that sense of unity and i understand, more than ever, how important it is at this time that we have that sense, we understand and remember that sense of unity. That was Paula Barry speaking to me earlier, her husband david died here 20 years ago in that World Trade Center. There are countless tales of Heroism And Bravery from 9 11 but one of the most remarkable belongs to patrick connolly. The attacks took place on his very first day as a new York Firefighter and he continued his Rescue Efforts even after being pulled free from the rubble of the North Tower. Patrick told us his story from New York. As we approached the North Tower from the north, which is exactly where the first plane went to, we were looking up and we had seen, unfortunately, what everybody else saw the people jumping and. Its very simple, like you know. We were able to help people out and direct some people out, and we got a place where we were maybe 30 yards from the North Tower, and there was this beautiful, beautiful round, Cylindrical Walkway that went from 7 world trade, which is the building that fell at five O Clock in the afternoon that afternoon, and it came over into the main complex of the trade center. And it was beautiful and it was mirrored. You know, it was probably 40 feet across, probably 150 feet long, and we walked. And as we walked down, we made a right turn and we were walking underneath this bridge and you can kind of imagine it we were walking from one side of the footbridge,
