It appears to be very mild this morning. That is my Brief Analysis of the weather walking in this morning. Of the weather walking in this morninu. ~. Of the weather walking in this morninu. ,. , of the weather walking in this morninu. ~. ,. , i. Of the weather walking in this morninu. ,. ,~ welcome you are exactly right. Pretty high temperatures, really, as we start of the morning. Today, lots of Cloud Around, lots of dry weather but some rent in Northern Scotland. Those temperatures, lets take a look at where things are at the moment, heading outside, 18 in london, 18 in liverpool, well, that is warmer than it should be during the afternoon at this time of year. So it is exceptionally mild this morning as you are heading outside. It also feels quite humid, and that humidity is bringing occasional patches of drizzle across england, wales and Northern Ireland. We have this zone of Heavy Rain in scotland, The Rain in the Central Belt will push through, but the Northern Scotland The Rain has pretty much set in for quite a while yet across certainly the northern highlands, 0rkney and probably shetland as well. Might see something of an improvement around aberdeenshire. The cloud will slowly Dinner Break through the day so we will get some limited sunny spells coming through across england and wales, and temperatures, 23 the highest, about average for this time of year. It certainly feels on the humid side. 0vernight tonight, again we will see Mist And Fog patches reforming. Lots of cloud enough to bring further outbreaks of rain into Northern Scotland. Might also start to see a little bit of Rain Pushing into the far South West, and our temperatures overnight committees are the minimum temperatures, down to perhaps 12 or 13 across england and wales. High pressure will start to try to push on from the north west, we have this well defined close to the South West, which will bring thicker cloud and the threat of some rain. Through the day we will get northerly winds blowing across the northern half of the uk, Sunny Skies Working On later in the day across these north western areas. It will begin to feel significantly fresher and a good deal cooler. Temperatures could be afternoon, aberdeenjust111 degrees, 111 also in newcastle. This will feel a bit more like early autumn. Furthersouth, will feel a bit more like early autumn. Further south, still holding onto that humid outward temperatures again into the low 20s in the warmer spots. Monday sees that same area of low pressure still threatening outbreaks of rain. The rain looks most likely across parts of wales and South West england. Further north, the Northern Ireland and scotland, Northern Ireland does welcome a drier with some sunny spells. But there is a degree of uncertainty across the midlands and Eastern England, just how cloudy it will be and how close that area of rain is likely to get. At the moment the wettest area looks likely to be further west across wales and the South West. So today, a mild start, lots of cloud to come but things will slowly brighten up for many of us later this afternoon. Thank you, chris, see you later. Now on breakfast its time for the Film Review with Jane Hill and Mark Kermode. Hello and welcome to the Film Review on Bbc News. Look whos here he is real, it is Mark Kermode really here in the studio, not an avatar fabulous to be back in the studio with you, jane, lovely to see you again. A packed show Coming Up, reviews of the Collini Case, which is a german crime thriller. We have respect, which is the biopic of aretha franklin, withJennifer Hudson, and we have herself, a new film by phyllida lloyd, which we have different opinions about. We start with the Collini Case. Yes, based on a Book By ferdinand von schirach, which i confess i have not read and it is a very famous book. The story is a young lawyer is assigned to a case in which he has to defend someone, played by the great franco niro, accused of murder. It seems hopeless, shortly after the murder of a lawyer appears in his cupboard in his own blood and refuses to play his own defence. So it then transpires that the lawyer actually knew the victim. In fact the victim was something of a mentor to him and took him under his wing and almost fathered him. The question is why on earth would anybody want to kill this man, who was an respected industrialist and a very good person, as far as anyone knows. The author of The Book, his grandfather was a very high ranking nazi who was trialled at nuremberg and what are the things The Book is about is coming to terms with the past and the ghost of your own past and accepting the fact that people who seem like one thing may actually be something completely different, so a lot of the story is to do with confronting guilt. Its also a pretty good drama in terms of, its a Courtroom Drama, now, i love a Courtroom Drama, i do understand Courtroom Dramas are full of things that never happen in real courtrooms, like people producing witnesses out of nowhere that no one has ever heard of, people presenting papers that ijust happen to have in my bag. I quite like a Courtroom Drama too, you see. Im a suckerfor it, i keep expecting somebody to slam the table and say, you cant handle the truth. If you accept that the drama is contrived and it does have all those conventions, then i think it is very entertaining, but more importantly it is about something very serious, it is about that thing of looking back into the past, a countrys guilty past and your own familys guilty past and asking questions about whether people are the people that they seem to be, so its doing quite a clever thing, which is it is a potboiler on one hand, but it is also about something far more substantial. I havent read The Book, but id very much enjoyed the film, it is called the Collini Case and it is in cinemas now. 0k. Now respect, i really want this to be good because aretha franklin, what a figure and what a story. Yes, extraordinary Life Story and it is played byJennifer Hudson, who is fantastic in the Lead And Everybody expected this. Aretha franklin herself basically appointed Jennifer Hudson and was very controlling on the Project Right up until her death in 2018 and she said toJennifer Hudson, you are the right person to do this. That is great, she can sing and act, she has a great presence and that is great. I think the problem is the film itself is not quite as exceptional as either its central performance or indeed as aretha franklin. It is a very tumultuous Life Story and the film wants to play things fairly safe, so there is domestic abuse, alcoholism, there is a lot of stuff that is quite dark and the film acknowledges it. What it doesnt really know then that is what to do with it. The musical set pieces are fantastic, i mean really fantastic and it goes from the 19505 In Detroit up to 1972 in the recording of her record breaking Gospel Album and actually because that is a very glorious place to finish, people will recently have seen amazing grace, de documentary about her doing that, which was delayed for so long. Yes. So i think it is worth seeing it forJennifer Hudsons performance because she is terrific, ijust wanted the film to be more exceptional and an awful lot of The Rock biopics have got the same beats and a lot of this seems familiar, but she carries it shoulder high and when she is on stage and doing it, she is really great. It is notjust The Voice. It is the gesture is, the way she holds her head back, half closes her eyes. She has got the physical performance absolutely down, so that is great, but the film is not as good as her performance. Wright, a mixed bag, Jennifer Hudson is very talented, isnt she . Im fascinated to know what you make of herself. Ok, so i mentioned that i dont think respect knows what to do with its themes of domestic abuse, so this when is set in 2020, before anything happened, and is co written by Malcolm Campbell and Clare Dunne and it is about someone who buys a house and sees it online and someone says it is possible to build a house for a small amount of money and it sounds ridiculous, but someone says i will give you my Back Garden to do it if you can make the house. Heres a clip. A house . Hm. Our own house . Hm. At the bottom of the garden . Like a fairy house. The only thing is, girls and this is really important, right . We cant tell anyone. Not anyone at school, not granddad and especially, not anyone at school, not nanny, granddad and especially, especially not daddy. Why . I am just going by What Ado The Builder said. He said thats the rules and youve seen him, right . You dont want to mess with him, do you . No. So we have to keep this to ourselves, yeah . Our own special secret. Like Black Widow . Sort of. Whats that . Oh, its just a code word. Its better you dont know. Yeah. So. No telling, 0k . Hm. Pinkie promise . Both one. Two. Three. Pinkie promise 0h, girls. And that is a fantastic clip, i think, because that summarises so much and reminds us how brilliant the three of them are when they are on screen together. And you completely believe them as a family. Yes, yes. , directed by phyllida lloyd, who is a brilliant director, but he was the interesting thing. Half the film is about the nightmare of domestic Abuse And Half is about the dream of building your own home, which is, you know, almost a fairy tale. In that, at one point they refer to it is a fairytale home. I think the thing the drama does really well for me is that on the one hand its got that stuff you get from something like witness, remember the Barn Building Scene in witness, which everyone loves, of Course Everyone loves watching a home being built. And it uses that you tell a much darker story about the plight of a woman who is being failed by The System, who is looking everywhere for help and is not receiving it. I think what the drama manages to do is tell that you tell a much darker story about the plight of a woman who is being failed by The System, who is looking everywhere for help and is not receiving it. But ina but in a way that looks as if it is a heartwarming, uplifting movie. I know you were quite surprised by how tough some of it was . I felt. For me i felt it was more a film about the Domestic Violence than the House Building, even though there are some quite joyous scenes with the House Building and the way her neighbours come to help and all that sort of thing. I thought it was a clever undercurrent, but a real knot in your stomach constantly because youre constantly worried about the abusive man who you know is still out there. So heres the fascinating thing. If you actually look at the amount of screen time that you see, you know, it is flashbacks. Its fairly little and fairly discreet. Yes. But this, it is like a tension in your gut, all the way through because they are interspersed as flashbacks and you feel they are the background everything. I think that is what is clever about the film, that is what is clever, what the former is doing is sugar coating the pill by making it apparently about putting the house together, as all this stuff, will it happen, will it work, all that stuff, but actually it is about something more serious and i think if you are going to make something about this kind of story the challenge is to make it acceptable. Will i enjoy watching it . Well, yes, there is plenty to enjoy in herself. There is also plenty to be alarmed by, but i think that is a pretty good balancing act. Yes, i would agree, great performances. Great to see in cinemas as well because it was going to go. It Cinema Release was messed up and it should have won awards but it was a little last Year But Nobody saw it, so now it is great it is in cinemas. Yes, absolutely go see it. What is your verdict on best out . I love anette, which is the musical by leos carax, who made box. I absolutely love box. A story about a cynical comedian who marries a much loved soprano and they have a baby which is portrayed by a puppet and the baby inherits The Voice of its mother and it is like a fable, a Dark Fable in many ways. It sounds like a completely bonkers idea, but it works for me because there is a kernel of truth in there. I have seen it three times now, played the soundtrack over and over again, it has some real earworms. Sparks are great dear ones songs, but. It looks wacky beyond wacky it is, but it is that thing about quirky, there is a very thin line between quirky and irksome. Wacky makes it sound zany, which i never like zany, but it is strange and experimental and awesome as it may be cry. I love films that make me cry. So doi the servant, really, really want to see, though. The servant was described, in 19605 film with a screenplay by Harold Pinter and it has got Wendy Craig and lots of others and it is about people stuck in a. Which Servant And Master relationships, and this film influenced everything from. I mean, parasite takes from it. There is a Steve Woolley Film called stone which takes a lot from it in performance, it is 11k, back in cinemas now for a couple of weeks and then you can get it in Dvd And Download from the 20th. Worth seeing, you love the trailer, right . Yes, and i liked parasite, echoes and. Yes. But very cold, very chilly and not a lot of laughs thats ok, thats ok, get to the cinema nevertheless. That is what we like to see. Thanks, mark. I hope you can start to enjoy some cinema going, wouldnt that be fantastic . Thanks for watching. Goodbye. Nearly 60,000 people will be pounding the streets at Newcastlegateshead Tomorrow Morning as the great North Run takes place. And this Years Event will be even more special than usual. Ive been taking a look back at why this event has become so important as the uks biggest run turns 110. Forfour for four decades forfour decades it has been changing lives, transforming the communities along its route through the simple act of running, together. Backin the simple act of running, together. Back in 1981 the great North Run was the first of its kind. Before it came along the running events were for the elite. 0lympic Legend Brendan Foster changed all that when he witnessed a Community Run in New Zealand and decided to try it here. People are asking are you going to do it again this year next year and we have no choice, we have got to do it because of the demand. Cheer to do it because of the demand. You are in fine shape ahead of your 110th run. Ill let you go. The story of this run goes far beyond the impact of individuals like Aileen And Brenda and the Tens Of Thousands of people that Line Up one day a year. It has helped reform and regenerate all areas along the route. Along the river as well. It has brought communities back together and restored Pride and believe in areas, really. Badly hit by unemployment and recession. With the Beating Heart of this area, the coal, Steel And Shipbuilding industries in terminal decline, the great North Run came along at the perfect time. Bob and ronnie became friends at one of the shipyards that closed in 19811. Of the shipyards that closed in 1984. They have also taken part in every great North Run and at the time it helps keep them going. It time it helps keep them going. It was something to look forward to every year. It might have been something that took your eye off the bad things that was going about, you know. It certainly did for me. As sooner run was finished one year, the only thing i could think about was the year and the next year, you know. It kept you sort of, i think it kept your mental state. Leave so much Pride in doing it. Ive actually got goose bumps standing here talking about it in depth. The sense of belonging. The greeting we got from the lasses. I havent seen you for Two years, it is great to see you. And that is the camaraderie that has built whole communities. When i watch the footage on the television and it shows you these Helicopter Shots of thousands of runners and the finish and the Start And Ijust Think Runners and the finish and the start and i just think that is where runners and the finish and the Start And Ijust think that is where im from, that is where i live. If you have one, send them to me and we will have them on later on. Temperatures at them on later on. Temperatures at the moment around 18 Stop Liverpool for example is warmer than it should be during the afternoon this time of year. So it is a very, very mild start to the morning, but also pretty humid. Across scotland today, some rain, this is pushing across the Central Belt and it will clear out of the way. This Rain Belt across Northern Scotland is pretty slow moving so that will be ready for quite a time across the North Highlands, perhaps shetland as well. Further started within an break to give some spells of sunshine and it is a largely dry afternoon. Temperatures today are quite widely in the high teens although 20s, 23 above average for this time of year, but as i say, it will feel a little on the humid side. 0vernight tonight, it stays rather cloudy and we will see Rain Coming Back south across scotland, with northerly winds blowing behind that feature. Figure cloud also working into the South West. Could be some Mist And Fog patches forming over hills elsewhere across wales and northern england, but temperatures 10 13 overnight. Pressure generally rising across the uk. We have got a couple of pesky Weather Fronts threatening some outbreaks of rain, so it will not be dry everywhere. Sunday, probably we will see The Rain living south and becoming increasingly patchy across scotland, with developing later in the day here for Northern Ireland and northern england. Cloud Thickening Tomorrow for some across south wales at the South West, staying dry and bright across eastern areas. Feeling fresh across eastern areas. Feeling fresh across the north of the uk with temperatures dropping 14 degrees for Aberdeen And Newcastle for a maximum temperatures. Further south we are still into the high teens and low 20s and it continues to be rather humid. Now, there isnt much wind around. This well defined, the same unthreatening rain for wales and South West england on Sunday Afternoon is still there on the charts for monday, still potentially bringing wet weather for wales and South West england. We could see some breaks in the cloud across Eastern England, but scotland, Northern Ireland and northern england will have the best of the dry and bright weather was sunny spells and temperatures again generally into the high teens to perhaps the low 20s. There was another Sci Fi Novel that coined the phrase metaverse, though, neal stephensons 1992 book snow crash, which also has a hero who has got a Crummy Light wHo Escapes into a virtual world. The metaverse. Hollywood Style Vr does sort of exist today, championed by an australian outfit cold zero latency. The closest that we have to Freeroaming Vr is this spatial Virtual Reality set up from a company called meatspace vr. I had a Backpack Year which contains a computer, a vr headset, and this rifle, which has controllers in it. We have set looks remark looks at markers on the floor to figure out where it is in 3 dimensional space. The headset looks at markers on the floor. Here, im solving puzzles in a Mindbending Aztec Temple in an experience called engineerium. I dont have any sensation that before is moving but my kind of things that it is. I can sample Shooting Stuff in the Vr Version of Buster Action Franchise far cry. Far cry. That was intense it would be headset and headphones on, i am completely immersed in these experiences, part of the Reason Hearing so much about the metaverse is because technology like this now exists. Richard bartle was there at the Very Dawn Of Multiplayer Experiences in 1978. He was one of the brains behind the worlds first multiplayer virtual world, the Text Adventure multi user dungeon, or mud. Nowa professor of Computer Design at university of essex, he believes there is a specific set of rules which defines the idea of the verse. Metaverse. So, metaverse is essentially a marketing concept. We have universes which are self contained realities, then we have multiverses, which are realities you can move between, so they are effectively the same reality. And then we have the metaverse, which is all one reality, but it has got a whole bunch of otherwise other world is interconnected. So as an example, something like World Of Warcraft is a universe you cant take anything into or out of the World Of Warcraft, it is self contained. Something like roblox is a multipurpose, and your character, you can move from one interior world to another interior world. The metaverse, however, means that you can move from one universe to another universe. So you can in theory have a character in a metaverse which will move from World Of Warcraft to Eve 0nline to final fantasy 14. That is the theory. Whether it will work on practice is another Matter. Another Matter. Games give us a klim se another Matter. Games give us a Glimpse Of another Matter. Games give us a Glimpse Of what another Matter. Games give us a Glimpse Of what a another Matter. Games give us a Glimpse Of what a potential another Matter. Games give us a i Glimpse Of what a potential meta Glimpse Of what a potential Meta Verse metaverse might look like, but there is a bigger question driving the recent interest in this idea, and that is who or what will have control over the platform. Imagine back in the day when we had the internet, there were companies vying to be the internet. There were about five of them in america. They were information providers, they called themselves. Ultimately it didnt work. They had to accept that the internet was a standalone platform for communicating. But the metaverse, that is another thing entirely, because if you control the platform, then you control what goes on within it. So if everybody did pile into roblox and they did all build although worlds in roblox, then roblox would only Meta Verse. Fortunes rise and fall in the world of technology, companies taking those first steps down the long road to creating the metaverse might not even be around when and if the idea becomes a reality. Come on, where are you out . These are the first facebook glasses, a partnership with the Luxury Eyewear Brand Ray Ban. It is no secret facebook has been working on Augmented Reality Glasses that can project images into your eyes, and these glasses do none of that. These are basicallyjust a pair of glasses with cameras on them. They are actually very similar to the Snapchat Spectacles that were released in 2016, although every time i mentioned that to facebook they insisted this is a very different product. To use them, you press the button to take a video, press the button to take a video, press and hold to take a photograph, and you can also use voice commands like hey facebook, take a video. There are also built in speakers so you can use them to listen to music or make Phone Calls, although when i tried that on the noisy high street, they were nowhere near loud enough to be remotely useful. So im going to be remotely useful. So im going to focus on the cameras. Now, the idea behind these is that you can leave your phone in your bag still have a way to capture little moments hands free as and when they arise, and i quite like that as a concept, so taking it at Face Value tried them out over the weekend. I met up with some friends, i went to a concert, loads of footage. And when i came to downloaded to my phone, the glasses had corrupted, and all the glasses had corrupted, and all the footage was lost. So you are not getting any of that. Instead, here is my last Backup Option of meeting a friend for coffee in the park. These Specs Record be square videos and nothing is automatically posted to facebook or livestreamed. Instead, you download eclipse at the end of the day and you post them whatever you like. Facebook says one use cases if you have children, and i can see that being useful because you can put your phone away but still capture some nice moments. I took a video of this dog taking a swim and i think the footage looks pretty good. Here is the same moment captured on my smartphone. I think the Smartphone Version looks better. Lots of people had questions about privacy, and i can see why they have branded these Ray Ban stories rather than facebook glasses or insta specs. Ultimately if somebody is inclined to take in footage and changing room, they can do that with a phone already, they dont need to spend 300 a pair of glasses. But even so i thought they might be a bit more obvious when recording video, because they do just look like an ordinary pair of Ray Bans. There is an led that lights up when you are recording, but maybe it is too subtle. My housemate thought it was just a reflection on the glasses. It could have been a red flashing recording light. In comparison, the snapchat specs were more obvious when recording. So i called facebook s head of ai and vr and bass were about privacy. To called Facebooks Head of ai and vr and bass were about privacy. To some Decree And Bass were about privacy. To some de. Ree we and bass were about privacy. To some degree we deal and bass were about privacy. To some degree we deal with and bass were about privacy. To some degree we deal with this and bass were about privacy. To some degree we deal with this today. And bass were about privacy. To some degree we deal with this today. You i degree we deal with this today. You have got Mobile Phones that people have got Mobile Phones that people have about that all have cameras on them, and so there is a degree in which our goal was to be more overt than what people are doing today with their phones. So i think there are a lot more opportunities for bystanders to know, and this is not something we left to chance. When you this was one of the most important things get right. Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer will outline his vision for social Care Reform Today with the plans expected to include a new Dealfor Care workers and unpaid carers. 0ur political Correspondent Ione wells is in the london newsroom. Ione labour has been facing a lot of pressure to come up with these plans. This follows the news that there was so much talk about Social Care, how to pay for it, and the questions were asked of Keir Starmer directly, what was your plan has taken a couple of days, what will he come up with today . He has certainly been i Raising Pressure to announce some of his plans and that is after he and he opposed borisjohnsons plans to raise taxes on employers and workers to fund Social Care but also tackle nhs backlogs. He has notjust faced backlash from conservatives but also from his own party with quite senior Labour Politicians like the greater Manchester Mayor Andy burnham saying that criticising the tory s plan alone wont cut it. Today we are expecting to get more detail about what labour would suggest instead. Earlier this week, labour s leader so Keir Starmer told Sky News that he would back a wealth tax. Today he is expected to give a little bit more detail on that saying he would specifically back attacks on landlords but also attacks on landlords but also attacks back a tax. But also on shares. The idea of Raising Taxes on profits from selling big assets is already something that the premise that Boris Johnson already something that the premise that borisjohnson has criticised saying it wont raise enough money to tackle the issue, to raise enough money to such. To fund Social Care. We are still awaiting a bit more detailfrom labour about care. We are still awaiting a bit more detail from labour about what exactly this Landlord Tax will look like, how much exactly it would raise and also it has been criticised a little bit by the Prime Minister himself, accusing it of not raising enough this is certainly going to be a key battleground for some time to come with some conservatives already nervous that their plan to hike national Insurance Tax is going to hit them politically, especially when workers start paying hundreds more pounds a yearin start paying hundreds more pounds a year in tax when that levy gets introduced. Labour under pressure to provide a little bit more detail about what sums they would use instead to raise enough money for all of this. It does feel very mild, i dont know if i want to say settled, you say it instead, chris. Good morning. Lots of Cloud Around this morning, but it is mild and kind of a Muggy Start to things. A beautiful sunrise for some, there have been gaps in the cloud across North East england, and this Weather Watch Picture from mars is from the north yorkshire area, where we have about sunrise with a few gaps in the cloud. For most of us it is a mild start to the Moniker Temperature is already have 17 or 18. In a number of these cities that is already warmer than it should be in the afternoon. So it is a very mild and muqqy afternoon. So it is a very mild and Muggy Start. Not entirely dry. Across Northern Scotland we had outbreaks of rain, and that rain is going to be persistent across Northern Areas. The Rain Clearing across edinburgh, here it should become drier over the next hour or Two and then we will see a few cloudbreak s developing later on for the eastern areas of scotland, the south not too bad either. For england and wales, the cloud is also thinning and breaking more generally to give us some spells of sunshine, and it continues to feel quite humid. 23 celsius in the east of england, but for most of us, quite an muggy and close dealfor the england, but for most of us, quite an muggy and close deal for the day. The rain in Northern Scotland will continue to slowly push its way back south across the eastern side of the country, and at the same time we will probably start to see some rain arriving across the South West, may be getting into the South West of wales as well. Another mild night, Temperatures Tonight and i3. Wales as well. Another mild night, Temperatures Tonight and 13. Perhaps not as warm as it was last night. For the second half of the weekend, pressure builds across the uk, which should give us drier weather. These cheeky relevance bringing zones of the cloud, and they will be a bit of rain around for Eastern Scotland, and across parts of wales, we will probably start to see rain arriving here. Otherwise, decent breaks in the cloud. Eastern wales, Northern Ireland, not bad. And across Northern Ireland and scotland, we should see some sunshine through the afternoon as well. Now, across the northern half of the country we have got cooler and fresher air coming in. Temperatures coming down maximums of ia in. Temperatures coming down maximums of 1a in Aberdeen And Newcastle, feeling more like early autumn. In the south we are still into the low 20s, still quite humid. Not much wind around, staring the atmosphere up by monday, so this Weather Front that we have got across the South West is going to be across the South West is going to be a very slow moving feature, so wales in South West england, the likely areas to pick up rain, could be Mist And Fog patches over the hills, and further north, drier, scotland and Northern Ireland and northern England Gypsy breaks in the cloud and a bit of sunshine, temperatures generally into the high teens, ranging from around 16 to 19 celsius. Maybe into the low 20s across parts of East Anglia and the South West, if we see cloudbreak sent a bit of sunshine poking through. Beyond that, a fair amount of dry weather but often quite cloudy into the week ahead, with a few sunny spells, perhaps one or Two showers or longer spells of rain working on from the west, especially late in the day on friday. But your latest weather. Were marking the 20th Anniversary of the 9 11 Terror Attacks today, a moment which left americans traumatised but also feeling a renewed sense of patriotism and public duty. And really, and unknown before wimbledon let me take you back, we have to teenagers defying the odds to be in this final today, yet it was only three years ago on a summers day, wimbledon, july 2018, they met in the second round of the wimbledon junior singles competition. And Emma Raducanu one, straight sets, and afterwards, fernandez, shejoked afterwards, fernandez, she joked almost, afterwards, fernandez, shejoked almost, well, it wont be long before we are on the womens main tour and we before we are on the womens main tourand we are before we are on the womens main tour and we are playing Each Other in a majorfinal. Little did tour and we are playing Each Other in a major final. Little did they think it would be to soon no one could have ever, predicted a majorfinal, so soon, between these Two teenagers, and radacanu will have the whole nation cheering her on tonight, as she tries to become the first british woman in 41 years to win a Grand Slam singles title. Raducanus story is the stuff of dreams ranked too low to make the main draw, she had to come through all the qualifying matches, before blowing away the greek 17th Seed Maria sakkari, to become the first qualifier to reach a majorfinal in the Us Open final tonight, and raducanu is yet to drop a set. She did it the hard way, she qualified. She didnt get the wildcard. She didnt waltz in here, saying, i got to run 16 at wimbledon. She did it the hard way, and it paid off because she didnt do that by the beginning of the tournament and a qualifying but she grew with each match, got better and better. We know that she was going to get better because we have already seen it. Again, she isjust taking it to another level here and it is very impressive. Taking it to another level here and it is very impressive. Dont forget, ou can it is very impressive. Dont forget, you can follow it is very impressive. Dont forget, you can follow it it is very impressive. Dont forget, you can follow it live it is very impressive. Dont forget, you can follow it live on it is very impressive. Dont forget, you can follow it live on bbc i it is very impressive. Dont forget, you can follow it live on Bbc Radio 5 live and the Bbc Sport up, wherever you are, if you are out and about tonight, the highlights, you can relive all the Action And Glory for Emma Raducanu tomorrow at lunchtime here on bbc at 145, certainly that is something to record for posterity as well, so, talking of History. Now, 18 years, after he made his first debut, for Manchester United, this afternoon, fans will be toasting ronaldos return. After one of the biggest Transfer Stories of the summer, the 36 year old Christiano Ronaldo will play his first game for Manchester United since he became a global icon and Re Signing from juventus. They face newcastle at Old Trafford in a 3 00pm Kick Off, and you can listen to exclusive commentary on Bbc Radio 5 live. People followed his career from afar since he left here and i think everyones very, very happy to have him back. He can speak for himself but it seems like hes happy to be back as well. The moods been very good, hes worked well, and were looking forward to saturday of course. Marion butterlyjoins us from you by. How do you sum this up . A lot of commentators are lost for words. I am on the same page as my colleagues. I have been discovering her at wimbledon, i think like everybody else. I thought she will be great but i didnt think she would be that soon the amazing champion she is starting to become. I was really surprised. She had to qualify and go through so many things alreadyjust to be in the main draw which is a tough task. To qualify in a Grand Slam is not easy at all and then she went through this and studying her campaign to the main draw and then just literally beating everyone without dropping a set. This is really, i think you guys have been waiting for this for a long time have been waiting for this for a lona time . ,. ,. ,. , long time you are right about that, 44 lona long time you are right about that, 44 long years long time you are right about that, 44 long years we long time you are right about that, 44 long years. We were long time you are right about that, 44 long years. We were mentioning | long time you are right about that, l 44 long years. We were mentioning a few moments ago, when you think back to the summer and she was very open about the issues she suffered at wimbledon when she couldnt come back out, she was having breathing problems. You understand that at such a young age, 18 years old, but now she has the confidence of someone much older. Incredible, playing with a smile, without a care in the world, without any fear. I would even go, i mean, she played the first wta events, wimbledon, she got a white card and she lost to a chinese player that actually she played again at the first round of the Us Open, second round, and this time she beat her in Two sets. You can see the improvement so quickly from her. She is such a fast learner. I think, from her. She is such a fast learner. Ithink, you know, she has something else within herself that says no Matter what is in front of her, that is it. That is only very few sports people are able to think that way and she is definitely one of them. For me she has made History. She is built for this and she will go on and even if she doesnt win this one she will win one very quickly after that and im so excited actually to see her play for the next decade or so because i just love her game as well. She moves really well but she is very aggressive as well, she comes inside the court and tries to take the ball early. She is hitting it off the winners and that sort of Game Style i love to see her play and it is so great and so exciting to see someone that young, to be able to inspire the young generation around the world, i think that is what tennis needs and especially womens tennis. What is more remarkable is you have this matchup between the Two teenagers, with such similar parts, both canadian heritage and ancestry. Also they played Each Other in the junior wimbledon. Also they played Each Other in the juniorwimbledon. How also they played Each Other in the junior wimbledon. How do you see this Matchup Tonight . In a way is it more difficult than established seeded players . Will it is little but will be a lot more difficult for both of them because both of them see the opportunity. Both of them because both of them see the opportunity. Both of them because both of them see the opportunity. Obviously it is a maor see the opportunity. Obviously it is a major one see the opportunity. Obviously it is a major one. But see the opportunity. Obviously it is a major one. But i see the opportunity. Obviously it is a major one. But i think see the opportunity. Obviously it is a major one. But i think they i is a major one. But i think they have to look at the bigger picture because they are going to be, both of them established to go and when multiple Grand Slams so it is not going to stop right after this final, it isjust going to stop right after this final, it is just the start so of course it will be more difficult because as you say they are the same age, same generation, about roughly the same ranking and for both of them it is such a big day so they dont want to miss the opportunity. They think no Matter what happens, you know, it is only the start for both of them. Definitely only the start. It wont be the only time they are going to play a Grand Slam final. They have to look at the bigger picture and have to go to play the same Game Style they played, they have quite a different Game Style. Fernandez is a lot more retrieving, a little bit further behind the baseline. Emma is a lot more aggressive so it is a different Game Style as well. Both of them really have to go for their chances. That lots of dry and bright weather. Most areas seeing sunny spells breaking through for a time later on this afternoon. You can see this feeling quite human, the top temperature about 23 across Eastern England. Further north we are generally into the high teens. Overnight tonight, we will see The Rain in Northern Scotland changing its mind, and start coming back south. So patches of rain working on across Eastern Scotland and working into the North East of england by the end of the night stop a bit of rain to come as well into the far South And West of wales towards the end of the night, but otherwise lots of dry weather, Mist And Fog patches about 1013. We are going to see a bit of touchy rain working south into Eastern Scotland and North Eastern england for a time, and rain will start to work into wales as we go through the afternoon. Otherwise, lots of dry and bright weather and it will start to feel fresher across Northern Areas with temperatures generally into the high teens. Time now for this weeks newswatch. Hello and welcome to newswatch. Coming up, is it to dangerous for Bbc Staff to be working in kabul . And was the death of Sarah Harding given too much prominence on Bbc News last weekend . The government proposals this week for overhauling the funding of Social Care in england were widely reported across Bbc News and reports like this. This is where the government reforms have to make a difference, the care front line, where the pressures to support more people and to find enough staff were felt most acutely. Between them, Marilyn And Nigel have 40 Years Experience as care workers, they have seen problems increase and need persuading things will change. But pictures such as those shown there provoked this response. That social Care Announcement from the government came on tuesday but had to occupy plenty of Media Attention before then. He has laura kuenssberg on monday. We have not yet seen the precise details of this despite westminster frothing with speculation about what will happen because this announcement has been so long in the making, and will be a few hours yet before we see the details in black and white. In a complaint familiar to regular newswatch viewers, andy gilding asked. Events have continued to move quickly in afghanistan with the taliban announcing a new interim government on tuesday and clothing at an islamic emirate. Meanwhile protesters have been taking to the streets and kabul objecting to the support they feel pakistan is giving to the taliban. This is the biggest challenge to the taliban authority have seen so far and it is not coming from a militia force, it is coming from peaceful protesters, from both women and men. The situation across the country remains highly volatile which has led to several viewers contacting us with concerns like this articulated recently by lindsay ramsbottom. One of the senior staff overseeing the Bbc Presence in afghanistan is jamie angus, senior controller of news output. Nice to have you in the studio. I am sure the viewers appreciated. How safe are bbc in afghanistan . It is a very dangerous place and its nice to hear the concerns of our audiences, but the bbc is a News Organisation used to operating in difficult and dangerous situations and we have a whole structure in place, our high risk teams and other ways we support correspondents to mean me minimise the risk to the safest possible level and re evaluate for each individual activity whether we are able to undertake the risk involved, so it is kind that people are concerned and we do everything we can for the people working with them and our afghan national journalists still there to make sure even when things are uncertain and dangerous that we can minimise the risk to them. Everyone knows the taliban reputation on human rights and particularly women, how comfortable are you about bbc journalists being there . Clearly this is a story of huge international interest and its right to be there participating on the ground and holding those in authority in afghanistan to account. However difficult and dangerous and unpleasant that regime is, its absolutely right that internationaljournalists are there seeking answers to important questions about whether the taliban will in some measure continue to protect the safety of some particularly vulnerable groups in the country, particularly women, also internationaljournalists and of course afghan journalist themselves, both working for the bbc and others who are particularly at risk of reprisals from the afghans, from the taliban and it is something we are particularly worried about, the safety of independent journalists as well as those working for larger News Organisations. There are lots of live Two ways from kabul, does that have risks . Yes, it does. Of course you are very visible and in a risky position, so there were times during the fall of kabul particularly the terrible Suicide Attack at the airport when we pulled back completely from doing those because the risk was simply too high and we went dark for a period essentially. Now be assessed the risks to be acceptable in most circumstances but obviously as a journalist you are putting yourself out there when you are standing on the lights and doing those live Two ways so we try to strike the balance between not having people standing out doing them endlessly for the sick of it but we do have the responsibility to our audiences to show we are live and bringing our version of events from afghanistan. The afghan World Service News and programming is a very big local team, what is the Bbc Planning to do with current afghan staff who are still there . Some have been able to come out and some have not. Well be very concerned to make sure over the coming weeks and months that everyone who is currently employed by the bbc in afghanistan who wishes to come out can do so with theirfamilies. We are not completely in control of those events because we have to work with our own government and others to make sure they can leave safely, which is our main concern, that they do not take on an additional risk, but clearly that is not something we can see completely into the future how clearly and quickly all they will be able to arrive in the uk. Presumably that affects whether they will be broadcasting within afghanistan for the world service. They are not currently broadcasting within afghanistan for the world service, we have maintained our Lifeline Pashtu services in dari and some iranian language services but they are mainly being supported by staff in london. Do you think you will have to pull out bbcjournalists . That is an impossible question to answer. We very much wish to retain a small staff in afghanistan that enables us to tell this absolutely vital story for our international audiences. If it becomes prohibitively dangerous of course well withdraw all ourjournalists but along with other international broadcasters we believe it is vital for the interests of Licence Fee payers in the uk and our global audiences to get the benefit of the bbc services and our footprint there need only be as large as is safe, we will not have huge numbers of staff there in the nearfuture just for the sake of it. Bbc news last sunday covered extensively the death of the singer Sarah Harding, who had breast cancer, including items about the incidence of the disease amongst young women and it led news at ten that night. She was part of one of the most successful british female bands of all time, formed on a reality show, they went on to have 21 top ten hits. Sarah hardings Mother Marie described her as a bright shining star, and her Band Mate Nadine coyle said she is absolutely devastated. For those unfamiliar with Sarah Harding, many of them older viewers they said the coverage was disproportionate. This was a lady i had never heard of who was in a band i had never heard of and honestly a very tragic story for her friends and family, please understand im desperately sympathetic to families who are going through such trauma, all families have studies like that. But i do not think that should have been headline news, i am a little disappointed with the bbc, there is so much going on in the world right now with home policies and foreign policies and what is happening with Covid And Afghanistan i know we are probably weary of it, but its a bit more important and i expect better, i think, of the bbc headline news. Finally, as we mentioned last week, regional news bulletins for English Viewers returned to breakfast this week after an absence of six weeks. The service had continued over the summerfor audiences in the rest of the uk, a fact which we failed to make clear last week, so apologies for that, but the return to a full regional service was warmly greeted by a number of you including charles who E Mailed. That was monday. On friday there were more disappointed viewers in the Midlands Region who received the local news for london rather than their own local area. Midlands today apologised for what they said was technical problems which were resolved in time for the last bulletin of the programme. Thank you for all your comments this week. Or hear on Bbc News, Tv Radio Online and social media, E Mail us. Or you can find us on twitter. You can call us and have a look at our website. We will be back to hear your thoughts about Bbc News coverage again next week. Goodbye. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with Naga Munchetty and charlie stayt. The impact of that day will never diminish for the families but today, 20 years to the day, President Biden hopes to get america past the 9 11 era, moving it from memory to History. Nomia iqbal, Bbc News, New York. 67 people killed in the attacks were british citizens and many of their relatives will attend a Service Today at the September 11 Memorial garden in london. Graham satchell is there for us. Graham, a difficult day for these families. We are expecting a small private ceremony here in Grosvenor Square. There is a bouquet of White Roses already at the base of this memorial which has been delivered by the prime Minister Borisjohnson and a handwritten note in which he says in remembrance of those taken from us on 9 11 and in defiance of those who would have us live in fear. The Prime Minister has recorded a message that will be played at a separate event later today in the Olympic Park. That message has been supplied to us by Downing Street and this is what the Prime Minister has to say. While the threat persists today, we can now say with this perspective of 20 years that they failed to shake our belief in freedom and democracy. They failed to drive our nations apart. Or to cause us to abandon our plans or to live in permanent fear. The fact that we are coming together today in sorrow but also in faith and resolve, demonstrates the failure of terrorism and the strength of the bonds between us. September 11 was a date that Change The World and the date around it has been vigorous. The aftermath and whether the world is a safer place today. The events in afghanistan and the return of the taliban has added fuel to that debate and that debate will go on but today here in Grosvenor Square is a time for the families to come together and support Each Other and remember our lost Loved Ones. The Duke Of Yorks lawyers have not yet responded to claims that hes been served with legal papers relating to claims of Sexual Abuse. According to Court Documents filed in New York, lawyers for Virginia Giuffre say they left the papers for Prince Andrew with Police Officers at windsor s Royal Lodge. The Duke Of York has always strongly denied the accusations and says he has No Recollection of meeting ms giuffre. Our royal correspondent Sarah Campbell has the details. Its like, how can there be a god, when youve seen all this happen, you know, how can there be a god . And it got me questioning everything. But i think ultimately what it made me want to do is turn this around. There was going to be a lot of repercussions from this, bad repercussions. You see a lot of hatred in the world, you see the worlds in a mess. Actually, i dont want to be part of that mess, i want to turn this around and make a difference. Rob had been estranged from his father, but in the years before he was killed their relationship had grown stronger. The manner of his Fathers Death was a catalyst. Rob quit his job to become a full time musician. These are the songs i never heard. And started working with Global Care an international charity for vulnerable children. Something good derived from something so evil. And the anniversary is always a difficult time. We dont have a grave. But it is definitely a moment where we can sort of stop, and we do, we take part with some of the other families in a little ceremony each year that we do to remember. Its a time of year that im glad when its done. In the West Cornwall Town of hayle stands a memorial to rick rescorla. He was born here, served with the Parachute Regiment and later moved to america where he joined the army and served in the vietnam war. On September The 11th, he was head of security for a finance firm, working in the South Tower. When the first plane hit, he ignored calls to evacuate, insisting instead on guiding other workers to safety. The Phone Rang and it was rick and he said to me, stop crying. He said, i have to get my people out but if something happens to me, ijust want you to know that you made my life. And then i said that back to him. And thats the last time we ever spoke. Every year since, susan marks the anniversary quietly but this year will be different. Usually i have stayed every single one of those years by myself on that day, just talking to a few Family Members. I can tell you this, on this day, i decided i am not sad. We are happy. He is in heaven, he was a hero, and so i invited 30 people to my house that had something to do with his life many of the families of the 67 british victims will attend a service at the September 11 Memorial garden in london. Among them will be the parents of ollie bennett, who was attending a meeting at the World Trade Center and was due to leave New York just weeks later. I was in a store which had a television and i saw this happening didnt see it happening, i saw a thing happening, and i turned to somebody who works in the store i didnt know her and i said, gosh, My Sons in New York, i hope hes nowhere near that. But by the time i drove home, you know, a mile and a half, My Son had rung from maine and said, wheres ollie, mum . And, it went from there rapidly, really. The company rang immediately in the afternoon and said that ollie was on the 106th floor. A fund for young entrepreneurs has been set up in Ollies Name and has helped more than 150 people. Each anniversary, the news coverage, the debates, the documentaries, can be difficult. It triggers, yes. But in reality, i had Two sons and i just think about him all the time, in reality. But, yes, those things certainly, every aspect of since September 11th, and it goes on and on, and it is a date that has changed. Changed the world, really. But im not sure in terms of my own personal grief. Erm, its there and it will always, always be there. Gosh, its not what youd expect. The events of that bright Tuesday Morning 20 years ago changed so much about the world we live in, but for the survivors and for the families of the thousands killed on September The 11th, 2001, Life Will Never Be The Same again. John maguire, Bbc News. There are countless tales of Heroism And Bravery from 9 11 but one of the most remarkable belongs to patrick connolly. The attacks took place on his very first day as a New York firefighter and he continued his rescue efforts even after being pulled free from the rubble of the North Tower. Patrickjoins us now from New York. Its an honour to talk to you. Good morning. Thank you very much for being with us. I would like to ask how are you feeling today, 20 years on . I feel aood. I feeling today, 20 years on . I feel good i guess feeling today, 20 years on . I feel good. I guess mixed feeling today, 20 years on . I feel good. I guess mixed feelings. Feeling today, 20 years on . I fi good. I guess mixed feelings. Its also tough anniversary every year. But i also feel proud of the guys that are working today, the guys and girls working today and the work they are doing and i am also proud of my own troops and my own Fire House. We have chosen this year to make a real concerted effort to remember those that were lost that day. So to best answer your question i would see mixed feelings, sadness is always there. It always comes in, seven or eight or ten days out and you start to see things and that is something that is seared into your memory. But its pretty incredible, the amount of men and women still working and helping People Day in and day out and doing exactly what the folks were doing that morning. If you wouldnt mind, can you take us back to that morning, 11th September . You had i think technicallyjust finished your training but were not supposed to be on shift and then you saw what was happening. Just pick up the story for us. Happening. The night before, Monday Night is a big night forfootball, the start of the Football Season and the New York giants were playing the denver broncos in my training was done at ten oclock that night and i invited my Academy Class back to a restaurant i owned with my brother and invited everyone back to watch the game. None of us were working till September 13 and we all returned to the restaurant and met up returned to the restaurant and met up with a whole bunch of other fireman who had unfortunately lost three firefighters in fathers day thatjune. They were designing a memorial T Shirt for the guys who had passed away to support their eight children. We were back at ten oclock at night got to meet some really special people that night. They passed away next morning. Next morning i woke up early, very excited to be off for the first time in a couple of months. Mundane tasks like putting oil on the car, getting a service on the car. I ran down, drop to the car off and went for a run. I was in the middle of a 50 mile run, getting ready for the New York City Marathon when i came passed one of the fire hoses that had been the restaurant the night before descending the T Shirt and one of them said thank you very much for last night. We appreciated the food and the space to create a memorial T Shirt. Just as we were standing there in full view of manhattan, right in front of us, the first tower exploded. We didnt really hear it. It was about five miles to the South West but it was clear as day. You could see it right there. When i close my eyes i can see it. Because i knew they were a Specialty Unit they were assigned pretty much straightaway. They made their way and i didnt know it at their way and i didnt know it at the time but it was the last time i was going to see those gentlemen. We have 305 fire companies in the New York city Fire Department. That company in queens lost 19 guys that morning, the worst loss for any company in the Fire Department. That was the beginning of it all. Is sobering to hear the juxtaposition of the happiness of the night before and then what happened and the loss of your colleagues and friends. If you can just push forward with the story because she then went in, you were not on shift but went on to work and immediately was sent down to the immediate vicinity of what happened. Once we saw that happen and those guys to cough i ran back those guys to cough i ran back panicked to the house of my older brother, brian, who was a fireman at that time. The last thing they handed us at ten oclock the night before was Two sets of our dear that we get, every fireman gets Two sets. We ended up getting it together and said we need to go in and decided to go in on a roll like everybody dead and made our way in as we were going through the midtown tunnel that was connecting queens to manhattan and we ripped through the plastic from the manufacturer and one of the sets was for me and brian is going to wear one and i was going to wear one and we went ahead and came down on the scene en route to this Trade Centre the South Tower collapsed at my brother matthew was driving us and he says i think the South Tower has gone and we couldnt believe it. If youre in New York to a very proud of the Trade Centre and we looked and said, oh, man, hes right. Its really hard to fathom this building is gone. When we arrived at the Trade Centre, the North Tower was the first hit in the second to fall. We decided know its time to go and help some people. And we did. Quite honestly, it was a really great feeling. I had worked in the Trade Centre for banks before this and i left my careerjust a couple of months earlier because i wasnt fulfilled in my work and i wasnt fulfilled in my work and i was going to have an experience that theyve put i was fulfilled more in ten minutes than i was in ten Years Sojust went to ten minutes than i was in ten years so just went to work and let the deeply as at me. There was this beautiful round cylindrical walkway that went from seven World Trade which fell at five oclock in the afternoon and it was beautiful, mirrored, probably 40 feet across and 100 feet long and as we walked only made a right turn and were walking underneath this bridge and you can imagine walking from one side of the footbridge and using the protection from everything, the debris falling and the people that were following, and we watch the other side and we looked at Each Other side and we looked at Each Other and we were underneath a bridge and we and said, ok, were going to get to the corner and we are going to reconsider what we are doing here. My brother said we dont want to getjammed up on this thing together. I said, want to getjammed up on this thing together. Isaid, come want to getjammed up on this thing together. I said, come on, want to getjammed up on this thing together. Isaid, come on, thats crazy. A5 together. Isaid, come on, thats crazy. As we treat one set out into the clear, this is a thing that kind of sticks with me, we took one step out and it sounded like a shot gun. All you heard was boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. Unfortunately those were the flaws plan kicking on top of Each Other and heading straight towards us. The 110 Story Building fell in ten seconds total and we were caught in the collapse and i normally find out this past week that there were four sets of brothers killed that day and a Father And Son in the Fire Department killed that day for an unknown reason, i have no idea why, we were separated and didnt know where we were and thought that was the end of it for us but we survived. We had friends of ours in that terror trying to get people out there never made it home that day. We have evidence of that, Phone Calls and stuff. We were on the 102nd floors and can get out and all the doors on that floor was square and couldnt get out. It wasnt just us and square and couldnt get out. Exactly last yea r, exactly last year, september ten, exactly last year, septemberten, i was in this new Fire House and i walked into the Night Shift at 6pm and looked down at the list of the guys coming in, no one was on the job that day. I said i am the only out of the 11th including another officer, every tenant across the four, who was there. We are going to talk about somebody today, i said, and i spoke about bobby big man, a Sculptor And Artist bobby mcmahon. He was a chef, a wonderful son, loving husband, great friend. When i became the official captain in january this year of my own Fire House in south jamaica, queens, it is kind of good sometimes being the captain, you make decisions. I decided every Roll Call we were going to remember some of the brothers lost on September 11. It started out as me talking about a guy called bobby, or vinnie halloran. The greatest girl in the New York city Fire Department, she has taken ownership of it, young and old have taken ownership of it. We have Two guys in our Fire House who lost their diets, one is bobby wallace, a big, strong burly guy who lost his dad. I asked him the other day, the next Two row calls will be for dennis cross, Mabel Tenant is brian cross. We are Coming Up on September 11 now, we have specifically designed it this way, we are going to remember your Two dads. Bobby wallace remembered his dad, a strong guy, sat for the loss of his dad and he talked about being six of his dad and he talked about being 5ix, going to a Fire House, taking a call with his dad, and from a young age being impacted by the work of his dad. He told us some funny stories, we got an insight into his personality. In doing so, it calmed him down a little bit. It was beautiful and really nice. We thanked him and everybody hugged and kissed him. It made him feel good. He thanked me for giving him the opportunity to do that, the only right thing to do of course. This morning we will meet at 7am, brian cross will dedicate the final Roll Call to the tenant dennis cross. Lieutenant dennis cross. I am sure he will do a wonderfuljob. Mi lieutenant dennis cross. H when it comes to alarm clocks, most of us probably use our phones. The queen as you might expect has something slightly more impressive. Her majesty is woken every morning by alone bagpiper a unique job which scott methven did for four years. Hes been telling us what the role entailed. To be honest, i quite simply couldnt believe it. I was asked by a gentleman, would you be prepared to go to london and become the next Queens Piper . Thats when i thought, my goodness, this is the most bizarre thing in the world. My name is scott methven, i am a professional Bagpiper Bagpiper and i was the 15th Sovereigns Piper since 1843. I grew up in a small village called gargunnock, which is just at the front of stirling castle. And if anyone had said to me in 30 years time you will actually be living in buckingham palace, i dont think i would have believed you, to be perfectly honest. At nine oclock every morning, you would play the pipes, you will do seven minutes and then you will tune your drones for a wee minute, and then another seven minutes. Really escorting her majesty the queen around. And being there to support, any guests that come along, introduce them to the protocols and the dos and donts. I did Two tours of afghanistan. I was there in 2008 and 2010. At the end of when i was the pipe major of the Argyll And Sutherland highlanders when the regiment was being reduced to a company strength, her majesty was coming for her last visit, sat straight across from her majesty the queen, and i never knew that this was in turn a sort of informal formal interview. I said yes, and then i went and asked my wife and she said i had to go for it. So this was 2017 up in balmoral, and this is the uniform that i would wear at dinner for the queen. So around the dinner tables, for all the members of the family. There were always some good bits of banter and one liners. It was just really enjoyable. Her majesty supported me with everything that went on with my private life. When i was up in balmoral, in 2017, my Wife Wasnt feeling well, my wife morven, and she was diagnosed with stage four terminal cancer. I said, what do i do with my kids here, what do i do with them . And i was told just to go. They were staying in balmoral castle and getting looked after while i was away looking after my wife. And she was given onlyjust weeks to live, you know, and she managed to kind of last a year. And you know, people genuinely think, oh, what you will about the royal family and the queen. They pulled it out the bag for me. The experience i had within the royal household was second to none. You are thrust right into the inner circle of the monarchy. The cliched word would be surreal. Bagpipes divide people, i think they are wonderful but i do think it would be quite shocking first thing in the morning. Can you imagine at 4 15am. Ibit in the morning. Can you imagine at 4 15am. . And in a speech ahead of his arrival in the city, President Biden reminded america of a time when it was united. The days that followed September 11, 2001, We Saw Heroism everywhere, in places expected and unexpected. We also saw something all too rare a true sense of national unity. Unity and resilience. Nomia iqbal, Bbc News, New York. 67 people killed in the attacks were british citizens and many of their relatives will attend a Service Today at the September 11 Memorial garden in london. Graham satchell is there for us. Graham, the queen has sent her personal condolences, hasnt she . We have just had that in the last hour or so, she has sent a message direct to the us president Joe Biden and in it she says, my thoughts and prayers and those of my family and the entire nation remain with the victims, survivors and families affected, as well as the first responders and rescue workers called to duty. It reminds me that as we honour those who lost their lives, we also pay tribute to the Resilience And Determination of the communities who joined together to rebuild. It isa it is a message of conciliation and an indication of the world coming together to remember a day 20 years ago that changed the whole world. There will be global events happening. The main one will be in New York where more than 2000 people were killed in the 20 hours. Here in london, in Grosvenor Square i am stood next to the September 11 Memorial that was dedicated in 2003. It is a hugely significant place for the 67 families of the british people who died 20 years ago because many of them dont have graves of gravestones they converted. There is a Half Tonne Steel girder from the 20 hours buried under the ground here preserved and rising and the names of the 67 are on a plaque on the wall. Those names will be read out today in a private ceremony in 67 White Roses will be laid. At the base of the memorial there is a bouquet of White Roses already at the base of this memorial which has been delivered by the prime Minister Borisjohnson and a handwritten note in which he says in remembrance of those taken from us on 9 11 and in defiance of those who would have us live in fear. The debate around September The 11th and with the world is a safer place will continue. But today is for the families. The Duke Of Yorks lawyers have not yet responded to claims that hes been served with legal papers relating to claims of Sexual Abuse. There has been pressure on them to see what it will do as it opposes the plans of the government. They have opposed the plans of Boris Johnson as it plans to raise taxes and they say it will hit younger and lower earners more which is a case they are likely to repeat today but as ever in politics if youre going to pull something it is hard to do unless you provide a lot and an alternative and the Labour Leader has been under pressure from people in his party Andy Burnham including saying it wont cut it. Sir Keir Starmer he would propose wealth taxes, taxes on landlords but also those who and a large amount of income from property portfolios, selling a large amount of stocks and shares and will go into detail what they would propose for social Care And Emphasis on prevention but also more care in peoples homes rather than care homes as well. We dont yet have a huge amount of detail what exactly some of these might look in practice and how the main Reason Income but we know that Boris Johnson has criticised calls for Raising Taxes on profits raised from racing taxes and saying it wont be enough assets saying it wont be enough assets saying it wont be enough to cover social reform and some tories never stay out Tax Increase in national insurance will hit them politically when workers start paying hundreds more in taxes every Year And Labour also still very much under pressure to provide a bit more detail how there are sums add up. Iv e ive been looking at The Sunrise and we have had some gorgeous sunrises across northern england but across scotland we have a lot of cloud and Mist And Fog and rain. That rain is mostly clearing through the Central Belt, clearing away from dundee at the moment. Rain across Northern Scotland will hang around for a bit longer so North Highland and perhaps not aberdeenshire staying damp for a good part of the morning. Elsewhere a lot of dry weather to come through the rest of the day. Cloud thinning and breaking across england and wales to give us some spells of sunshine. Temperatures up to 23 degrees across eastern areas and it will continue to feel humoured. Further north generally high teens to early 205. I dont think it will feel cold anywhere today. Overnight the Weather Front starts moving back southwards bringing The Rain back across the eastern areas of scotland into North East england towards the end of the night. Quite a bit of cloud elsewhere, a few Mist And Fog patches around coast and hills and maybe drizzle across the high ground of wales and the peak district. On sunday High Pressure will try to build and we start to get northerly winds which will introduce cooler fresher air across the northern half of the country, temperatures are dropping a little compared to recent days. A bit of damp weather to start the day. Eastern scotland, North East england. Across wales we will see cloud thickened with outbreaks of rain arriving through the afternoon turning potentially heavy but otherwise dry weather. Fresh and cool across Northern Areas, 13 for aberdeen and 15 for newcastle. Further south still feeling a little humid across the very south of england where we will see temperatures again into the low 205. Monday still High Pressure across the North Half of the uk. Still threatening some thicker Cloud And Rain particularly across parts of wales and perhaps into parts of the midlands and maybe not west england. Eastern england should be dry and Cloud Fen and break for sunny spells but the best sunshine will be across northern england, Northern Ireland and scotland. Temperatures for most of us in the high teens so normal for the time of year and given high teens so normal for the time of yearand given a high teens so normal for the time of year and given a few cloud breaks we could see temperatures hit the very low 205 across parts of Eastern England. On tuesday we may see an area of Rain Push across parts of england and wales but Northern Ireland and scotland will continue with dry weather. Mid week probably brightening up with temperatures returning to the low 205. In cardiff and London Highs of around 22 degrees or 22. 21 or 22 degrees. On friday most of us will see rain coming in from the north atlantic as we go through friday. A5 coming in from the north atlantic as we go through friday. As the beatles on it will turn a little cooler and fresher for the north of the uk. On it will turn a little Cooler And Fresherfor the north of the uk. As the a week goes on. Weve had some worrying covid figures from scotland, where one in 45 people is now thought to have the virus. Thats the highest level of inection for any part of the uk since the office for national statistics started doing its weekly survey. We can look at that and all the latest coronavirus developments with our regular Saturday Experts linda bauld, professor of public health and the virologist, chris smith. There does seem to be a moment in time with a focus is there in scotland with rising case rates and changes in some rules and regulations around what people will be allowed to do and how they will be allowed to do and how they will be allowed to get on with normal life. Tell us a bit more about that. Its been a very busy few weeks and scotland with lots of changes. If we go back to august nine we lifted all remaining legal restrictions. Schools started to go back to around the 12th And 13th and most of them back by the 19th and then we have seen the office for national statistics figures this week suggest 117,000 people, one in 45 had the virus but that is a retrospective indicator. There is a real concern indicator. There is a real concern in scotland about the numbers of people infected. We see that in our Waste Water surveys which are a good reliable indication and we think there are a number of factors. Opening up the schools will have played a role, even looking back in the summer high rates around the football and other mass events. The government is trying to get on top of it so as we discussed on monday the latest move is to introduce Vaccine Certification for certain venues and that is really a Policy Decision to see we are not going to take steps back and close things but we need to take some action to get on top of the situation. Some good green shoots, it looks in recent days as though cases are certainly levelling off and although there are many more people in hospital than we would wish we hope that will also decline in the coming weeks. I didnt understand it. You said Waste Water indicators, what do you mean . I think we might have touched on this before but it is really worth emphasising if we havent. Across the uk we have fantastic scientists are skilled at looking at whether the virus is present in our Waste Water so looking at Waste Water treatment plants and they take a sample from those plants, for example across scotland. They compare parts of edinburgh with Glasgow Or Aberdeen in the highlands and say to what extent is the bite is present they are . That doesnt involve sampling people, it is an environmental indicator. It is not a single one we use but part of basket of measures it is useful to test. Chris, apologies for keeping you hanging on. Linda, we have this figure of one and 45 people in scotland. What is an unacceptable figure . Scotland. What is an unacceptable fiture . ,. , scotland. If we had seen that earlier in the pandemic without vaccines, we will be looking at thousands of people in hospital and back to the level in january. People in hospital and back to the level injanuary. But people in hospital and back to the level in january. But vaccines people in hospital and back to the level injanuary. But vaccines mean thatis level injanuary. But vaccines mean that is not the case and we are now moving away from just focusing on levels of infection and cases and looking at a wider range of features and the pressure on the Health Service is the key thing. The death remain very low. The vast majority of those cases are in the younger Age Group so we are in a very different situation but we do want those numbers to decline. Those numbers to decline. Chris, there has been those numbers to decline. Chris, there has been discussion those numbers to decline. Chris, there has been discussion as those numbers to decline. Chris, there has been discussion as to i there has been discussion as to whether compulsory mask wearing could be reintroduced. Do you think that would be a sensible move . I think all cards are on the table. We do not think all cards are on the table. We do not know think all cards are on the table. We do not know what will happen this winter do not know what will happen this winter although we do have some reassurance as linda has been saying that the reassurance as linda has been saying that the vaccines are performing really. That the vaccines are performing really, really well. 95 effectiveness in terms of preventing People Effectiveness in terms of preventing people developing severe disease and that makes me really confident we are in that makes me really confident we are in really good shape as we go into winter~ are in really good shape as we go into winter. I would touch people dont into winter. I would touch people dont obsess about the overall numbers dont obsess about the overall numbers of cases, look at how many people numbers of cases, look at how many people are numbers of cases, look at how many people are becoming unwell and going into hospital or worse still losing their into hospital or worse still losing their lives into hospital or worse still losing their lives because these are the nietrics their lives because these are the metrics about what coronavirus will be long term as we move into phase of living be long term as we move into phase of living alongside it and with it rather of living alongside it and with it rather than stop it because we know we can rather than stop it because we know we can make this thing go away. Any nieasures we can make this thing go away. Any measures that can slow it or stop it or keep measures that can slow it or stop it or keep the measures that can slow it or stop it or keep the nhs from being under pressure or keep the nhs from being under pressure remain on the table. We have pressure remain on the table. We have to pressure remain on the table. We have to wait and see what will happen have to wait and see what will happen. In england we are lagging behind happen. In england we are lagging behind scotland in terms of schools because behind scotland in terms of schools because in behind scotland in terms of schools because in scotland schools went back earlier than in england. There is an back earlier than in england. There is an Amplification Effect of schools is an Amplification Effect of schools going back we would expect our case schools going back we would expect our case numbers to continue to rise in england our case numbers to continue to rise in england for at least a while so at the in england for at least a while so at the moment it will be a question of we at the moment it will be a question of we know at the moment it will be a question of we know that is going to happen, how far of we know that is going to happen, how far will of we know that is going to happen, how far will that goal and to what extent how far will that goal and to what extent will that translate into more Cases Extent will that translate into more cases in extent will that translate into more cases in hospital for example and if we do cases in hospital for example and if we do see cases in hospital for example and if we do see an acceleration i think we may have we do see an acceleration i think we may have to we do see an acceleration i think we may have to step in with other nieasures may have to step in with other measures again. But hopefully they will be measures again. But hopefully they will be short and minimal. Jeff bennett has will be short and minimal. Ieff bennett has got in touch with us. Could the annual Flu Jab be combined with an updated Covid Vaccine in the future, to ensure continued efficacy . Certainly plants have been advanced and put certainly plants have been advanced and put forward and considered to put a and put forward and considered to put a programme together where we would put a programme together where we would give put a programme together where we would give a Flu Vaccine at the same time. We expect guidance on this in the week ahead and it guidance on this in the week ahead and it would make sense given that flu is and it would make sense given that flu is seasonal and we administer a Bil Flu is seasonal and we administer a big programme of Flu Jabs in a normal big programme of Flu Jabs in a normal year to certain people and they overlap with the people most vulnerable to coronavirus so it would vulnerable to coronavirus so it would make sense on Convenience And Efficiency would make sense on Convenience And Efficiency terms and preventing serious efficiency terms and preventing serious disease terms to try to administer both together and there is no evidence it would be unsafe to do so. Is no evidence it would be unsafe to do so. They is no evidence it would be unsafe to do so, they are completely safe vaccines do so, they are completely safe vaccines that work in different ways and would vaccines that work in different ways and would be administered at different sites. Different sites. Nigel has a question do we know how many people in the daily death figures are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated . This question comes up a lot and maybe we have not been clear on our communication on this point. That is not routinely published in the daily dashboard for the uk. Those figures do exist and they are not that easy to find but they are there. One source is the variant technical briefing that public Health England Produce that look specifically at the Delta Variant and that is a table looking at cases, hospitalisations and deaths from february till the end of august. There are about 500,000 cases of people with the Delta Variant and there were about 1000 1700 deaths in that idiot. About 60 what in double vaccinated individuals but that does not mean the double vaccination is not mean the double vaccination is not saving lives because there are many, many more people and that category who are double vaccinated than unvaccinated in the uk and i often use the analogy of seat belts. Two thirds of people in the uk who die on the roads are waiting seat belts even although 99 of people generally wear seat belts. The 1 who dont wear a Seat Belt Account for the third of deaths. In other words, vaccines are highly effective but not 100 effective. Many of the people with covid our older and the most vulnerable. My colleagues at public Health Scotland recently started publishing hospital deaths by Vaccine Status and many many more people in hospital unvaccinated and vaccinated. Two complicated bits of evidence to understand. Vaccines are still working, we should expect deaths in that Age Group but youre much more protected from death if you are double vaccinated than unvaccinated or even with the first dose. Unvaccinated or even with the first dose. ,. ~ unvaccinated or even with the first dose. ,. ,. ,. Dose. Chris, we talked a lot about schools going dose. Chris, we talked a lot about schools going back. Dose. Chris, we talked a lot about schools going back. I dose. Chris, we talked a lot about schools going back. I wonder dose. Chris, we talked a lot about i schools going back. I wonder where we are with what we have learned so far. What evidence is there about what difference it is making . Ih what difference it is making . In scotland we saw a surge when schools went back scotland we saw a surge when schools went back and prior to that in the summer went back and prior to that in the summer we went back and prior to that in the summer we saw went back and prior to that in the Summerwe Sawa went back and prior to that in the summer we saw a dip went back and prior to that in the Summerwe Sawa dip in went back and prior to that in the summer we saw a dip in cases when Schools Summer we saw a dip in cases when schools went off and this was matted with the schools went off and this was matted with the cases in england as well. So certainly we know that the School Year does so certainly we know that the School Year does play a role in spreading and amplifying notjust year does play a role in spreading and amplifying not just Coronavirus Infections and amplifying not just Coronavirus Infections but in fact all kinds of infections infections but in fact all kinds of infections tend to go up. There are a number infections tend to go up. There are a number of infections tend to go up. There are a number of factors probably involved a number of factors probably involved in that, notjust more people involved in that, notjust more people getting together more often indoors people getting together more often indoors and with the weather getting colder indoors and with the weather getting colder and indoors and with the weather getting colder and autumn coming in we tend to spend colder and autumn coming in we tend to spend more time inside and have the windows and doors closed so ventilation is not so good. With that in ventilation is not so good. With that in mind, many of the measures are being that in mind, many of the measures are being advocated to try to offset those are being advocated to try to offset those effects. Things like trying to ventilate those effects. Things like trying to ventilate the space is better and try to ventilate the space is better and try to install metres which will give try to install metres which will give us try to install metres which will give us some kind of warning if we are not give us some kind of warning if we are not ventilating spaces properly. Lets be are not ventilating spaces properly. Lets be aware of the fact more people lets be aware of the fact more people getting together more often does lead to more Disease Transmission and that will give us Benefits Transmission and that will give us benefits against not just coronavirus but all kinds of respiratory cases and we all end up with seasonal calls because we like to get with seasonal calls because we like to get together and we share our iams to get together and we share our iams as to get together and we share our jams as well as dinners and lunches. Neil has jams as well as dinners and lunches. Neil has a jams as well as dinners and lunches. Neil has a question. Germs. In regard to any future covid passports, what might happen to people who want to get the vaccine but are unable to due to allergies . We have already seen for international travel there is a mechanism for this. We have had international health regulations since 1969 for a yellow fever are now required for travel. There are people who can take up the vaccine and being allergic to one of the ingredients in the pfizer our Medallion Nat Vaccine is a contraindication so you wouldnt necessarily get it. Moderna. It would have to apply to mass events like nightclubs and we look globally on this. Its important that for people who are four very good reasons are not able to have a vaccine are not disadvantaged by these kind of schemes and that needs to be built into The System and it is to be done properly. If you have ever done a five k, maybe you have ever done a five k, maybe you are training for a 10k, Half Marathon or marathon, it goes back to 1981, a certain event being staged again tomorrow. Nearly 60,000 people pounding the streets of newcastle, gateshead tomorrow, the great North Run takes place. And this Years Event will be even more special than usual. Ive been taking a look back at the uks biggest run turns 40. For four decades its been changing lives, transforming the communities along its route through the simple act of running, together. Archive the greatest, the friendliest, but above all, a colourful and joyous celebration of identity and spirit. Back in 1981 the great North Run was the first of its kind. Before it came along, running events were for the elite, not for the masses, but olympic Legend Brendan Foster changed all that when he witnessed a Community Run in New Zealand and decided to try it here. I mean, people are asking us are you going to do it again next year, and to be perfectly honest weve got no choice, weve gotta do it because thats what the public are demanding. Over 12,000 entered, making it the biggest race in britain. One that even tempted the then england captain, kevin keegan, to take part in. Archive what a Day Kevin keegans been having. Alongside keegan, many whom had never thought of running before like Aileen And Brenda. Friends in that first Run And Theyve done every one since then. We saw the great North Run advertised on telly and we thought, right, well do that instead of all these mad diets that we used to do. Itjust made us healthier, didnt it. We could eat as much chocolate. You dont have to think about your diet just go for a run, thatll get rid of it. I just love running now. Ive run 40 years and itjust blows away the cobwebs, its fabulous, i love it. And ill be very upset when I Cant do it any more i like the beginning and the very end. Theres some painful bits. But the crowds pull you along. Anyway, i wont Hold You up any more. I can see youre in fine shape ahead of your 40th run, so. Good luck and ill let you go. But you know, the story of this run goes far beyond the impact on individuals like Aileen And Brenda and the Tens Of Thousands of people that Line Up one day a year. It has helped transform and regenerate whole areas along the route. Along by the river as well. Its brought communities back together and restored Pride and believe in areas, really badly hit in the early 805 by unemployment and recession. With the Beating Heart of this area, the coal, Steel And Shipbuilding industries in terminal decline, the great North Run came along at the perfect time. Bob and ronnie became friends at one of the shipyards which closed in 1984. Theyve also taken part in every great North Run and at the time it helped keep them going. It kept people sane, it was something to look forward to every year. It might have been something that took their eye off the bad things that was going about, you know. It certainly did for me. As soon as the run was finished one year, the only thing i could think about was the next year. The next year, you know. It kept you sort of, i think it kept your mental state. Theres so much Pride in doing it. Ive actually got goose bumps standing here talking about it in depth. The sense of belonging. And you know, the greeting we got from the lasses here was like, oh, weve not seen you for Two years, its great to see yas. And thats the camaraderie thats built whole communities. When i watch the footage on the television and it shows you these Helicopter Shots of thousands of runners and the finish and the start, and i just look at that and say thats where im from, thats where i live. And that really, that really gives me that sense of Pride. Such has been the impact of this run that its History has now been celebrated in a film that premiered this week to mark the 40th anniversary. Voiceover thousands would come. They claimed it as their own. Scripted by the man behind the horrible Histories Series and funded by the national lottery heritage fund. The great North Run brought hope at a time when the region was done. At a time when the region was down. It brought people to the region and before then people had always had this vision of dark satanic mills, and they came up here, and especially at the finish when you go to the glorious Marsden Beach where i grew up as a lad, and you see it and people say, actually, the North Isnt as bad as we thought. In the decade since it began, its become the trailblazer for Community Runs up and down the land. Its still the biggest of its kind with 55,000 running this year. Its role more important than ever after the isolation of the pandemic and lockdowns and after missing its place in the calendar last year. When we thought about the History of the great North Run we realised that a lot of change has happened in the areas over the 40 years. From an old industrial past to the bright shining surroundings we see today, and the few constants in that time have been the great North Run and the people in the North East and the character of the North East, and theres certainly a relationship between the kind of hope and optimism the great North Run brings and the Spirit And Identity of the North East, for sure. 40 years on and this event is so ingrained in the dna of this region now, and in bob and ronnie, to the extent that bob intends to take part forever, even when hes gone, with his sons, literally, carrying on his legacy. It would be no hardship for them just to carry my ashes around and then i might spiritually feel as though im still doing the run, you know, forever. The great North Run on bbc Two from 9pm and ten oclock tomorrow morning. One of my favourite when i was young, e edith nesbit, i thought people wouldnt Mind Someone using vaguely the same plot, but with a twist, modern. In the original book, dad is a classic english gentleman, when he goes to prison it is clear to everybody that he is innocent and mum is one of those wonderful amazing mothers who neverflaps, goes to a cottage with her kids in the country, it is pitch dark, rustling over her feet, the country, it is pitch dark, rustling over herfeet, she the country, it is pitch dark, rustling over her feet, she doesnt scream like ordinary women, she says lets have an adventure, dear. I thought, i do not see life like that so, with huge respect to The Book which is quite wonderful, i have done my own version where mum gets frightened and irritated and dad, i will not give away the plot but he is not quite as wonderful as the youngest child, phoebe, imagines. I wanted to keep railway as a kind of setting but in the original book the children walk along the tracks and lump up children walk along the tracks and jump up on the platform, you think you couldnt possibly do that now.
