And the former asylum exciting americas urban explorers, so dont Go Away 0ur explorers, so dont Go Away our next port of call this week finds us in france, which has used lockdown to think again about how its people work, play, and travel in the capital city. It could all and in sweeping car bands, paving the way for more of the same across europe as elinore was wire has been finding out. This europe as elinore was wire has been finding out. Been finding out. This is me in New York next up, we are crossing to the us and the city of milledgeville in georgia, which is to be home to one of the biggest psychiatric hospitals in the world. In recent times, the half abandoned site has become a honeypot for urban explorers. William lee roberts, who is from the state, has been there to take a look. Sprawling overbearing and derelict, these 200 buildings or once made up one of the largest and most notorious State Run psychiatric hospitals in the world. Based in milledgeville, a small town less than 100 miles from atlanta, the central State Hospitals Dark Legacy is infamous with local residents. Founded in the 19th century, as the Georgia State lunatic, idiot and epileptic asylum, a lack of funding and a primitive approach to Mental Health Led to brittle treatments and at times deteriorating conditions. Little. Its strange but when i was a little kid and misbehaving my father would threaten me by saying im going to send you down To Milledgeville and i would shut Up Milledgeville and i would shut up but to be here voluntarily all of these years later, it seems a little wrong. A small section of the hospital is still in operation. Section of the hospital is still in operation. There are still in operation. There are still patients still in operation. There are still patients here still in operation. There are still patients here at still in operation. There are| still patients here at central State Hospital, over 300 of them, and its important to remember that this is still an active hospital. Its very disrespectful to them and to their treatment to try to come out here and either break into the buildings or quote unquote hunt for ghosts. Hunt for ghosts. Beyond the Workin Hunt for ghosts. Beyond the working hospital, hunt for ghosts. Beyond the working hospital, most hunt for ghosts. Beyond the working hospital, most of L Hunt for ghosts. Beyond the i working hospital, most of the estate is now in disrepair and in recent years, Dark Tourism has attracted an influx of urban explorers keen to record milledgevilles sinister legacy. But structural damage and Reports of decades old asbestos mean that the interiors of most of the buildings are officially off limits. Roofs have caved in, windows have been boarded up in, windows have been boarded up and staircases have collapsed. But perhaps more powerful than the actual buildings other thousands of graves of former patients. A chilling reminder that many people entered milledgeville but never left. 50 people entered milledgeville but never left. But never left. So when you look at the but never left. So when you look at the stakes but never left. So when you look at the stakes here, but never left. So when you | look at the stakes here, they all do have numbers on them. And its sort of a misnomer that we dont know who they all are. We do know every person is who is buried here. The numbers were for privacy purposes. Malia; were for privacy purposes. Many locals have were for privacy purposes. Many locals have relatives were for privacy purposes. Many locals have relatives who locals have relatives who either worked at the hospital or were admitted there. For some, not enough is being done to honour their memory. I some, not enough is being done to honour their memory. To honour their memory. I feel sorry for to honour their memory. I feel sorry for my to honour their memory. I feel i sorry for my greatgrandmother, sorry for my great grandmother, she was in the building right there. If i cant relive and memorialise her and what she did here, at least you could memorialise where she stayed and the hospital she spent her entire life in. Entire life in. Over the years, racism, sexism and what is i entire life in. Over the years, i racism, sexism and what is now viewed as a rudimentary if not brutal approach to treating patients with Mental Health issues meant that by the 1960s, the Hospitals Population had swollen to over 12,000 patients. Swollen to over 12,000 patients patients. So my i greatgrandfather patients. So my greatgrandfather sent patients. So my greatgrandfather sent his Great Grandfather sent his wife, betty stubbs, to Central State and im of the opinion that she had postpartum syndrome and had to live here for almost 30 years, either pretending that she was not normal so that she could cope orjust normal so that she could cope or just living normal so that she could cope Orjust Living in a fog. 1899. 1904. Sadly, a lack of staff and resources meant conditions declined rapidly and the asylum became notorious for its mistreatment of those admitted. So this was a lobotomy, doctor Fishers Lobotomy Pick is, they went into the orbital socket of The Eye and deadens the front part of the brain. But it was really brutal, it really does make i think it hurt more than it helped. Make i think it hurt more than it helped it helped. Weve come a long way since it helped. I think are to fill the gap for local residents in milledgeville because hospital has been something that has been here for a long, long time. Ifind that people often have a sense in their own mind of what they think it was like but when they come, its an opportunity for them to really learn about the size, the scope and the humanity involved in the hospital campus. Humanity involved in the hospital campus. Well, i think histo is hospital campus. Well, i think history is important hospital campus. Well, i think history is important because l hospital campus. Me, my corey, and the rest of the Travel Show he team here in kenya, its goodbye. Hello there. We had some intense showers to end friday across eastern scotland, eastern england, some rumbles of thunder, a lot of rain also from those showers in Northern Ireland. This is just how it looked in those showers, for example, at Lowestoft In Suffolk on friday afternoon. Now, we should see fewer showers at least through saturday in fact, for much of the weekend but there is a Question Mark over sunday and thats because we should see a little bit more sunshine. Things turn a little fresher as this area of low pressure responsible for the showers starts to move away to the north east. We are left with wet weather across Northern Scotland because of this Trailing Weather Front but behind that weather front, we shift the Wind Direction into the north and the north west, so it freshens up because at the moment, we still have that humidity. That will start to ebb away during saturday. But we also have that wet weather in the north. Its already been pretty wet in shetland and by morning, widespread rain across the north, scotland some quite Heavy Rain as well. Elsewhere, the showers tending to ease away but a Muggy Night again, 1a or15. Lots of grey, misty, murky weather in northern and western areas, drizzle over the hills, some potential Hill Fog as well. But that cloud should break up and so, for england and wales, fewershowers, brighter weather, a bit more sunshine than we had during the day on friday. Still a scattering of showers for Northern Ireland. Best chance of sunshine in the south and the south of scotland. But for the north of scotland, itjust continues to be a pretty wet affair. A real soaking rain, so well need to keep an eye on that for localised flooding. A little bit fresher in the north but still quite warm in the sunshine in southern and eastern areas, and thats because we have got a Ridge Of High Pressure here. Now, by the time our Weather System starts to drift southwards, it does peter out and eventually becomes drier for Northern Scotland under a Ridge Of High Pressure but this is the Question Mark what comes in from the west. But for sunday, you can see perhaps a little bit of cloud, a breeze and some rain for the Great North Runners here. Weve got a lot of dry weather elsewhere and it becomes drier for scotland and Northern Ireland than recent days, but its how far north and east this rain comes thats giving us a headache at the moment. It looks like the South West and wales will bear the brunt during the course of sunday. Further east, a little bit drier. But fresher, temperatures down on those of saturday. And then how far east will it push into monday . So, as i say, thats the big Question Mark at the moment. Elsewhere, high pressures bringing a lot of dry and settled weather yes, its fresher but as ever, if you have plans for the next couple of days, stay tuned to the forecast. Good morning. Welcome to breakfast with Naga Munchetty and charlie stayt. 0ur Headlines Today as the United States marks the 20th Anniversary of the 9 11 terror attacks, president Joe Biden pays tribute to the victims and calls for unity.
