We start in the us where, as youve been hearing, President Biden is taking the fight against covid to the workplace. The spread of the Delta Variant has hit the economic recovery, stalling Job Creation and battering consumer confidence. Now, the president is ordering all federal government employees to get vaccinated and businesses with more than 100 staff will have to ensure they are either vaccinated or tested weekly. My message to Unvaccinated Americans is this what more is there to wait for . What more do you need to see . We have made the vaccine free, safe and convenient. The vaccine has fda approval. Over 200 Million americans hav gotten at least one shot. Over 200 Million americans have gotten at least one shot. We have been patient, but our patience is wearing thin and your refusal has cost all of us so, please, do the right thing. Butjust dont take it from me. Listen to the voices of Unvaccinated Americans who are lying in hospital beds, taking their final breath, saying, if only id gotten vaccinated. Emotive stuff. Joining me now is chris campbell, chief strategist at the risk consultants kroll. Hes a former senior official at the us treasury department. Itjoins me now it joins me now from itjoins me now from his very smart kitchen good to see you. Republicans already ripping into this, calling It Coercion Getjabbed Orface getting sacked. Does this order have a legal basis . Look, i think it probably will be tested in the courts but the mandate is in effect and the president is obviously issued a mandate to employers as you noted, over100 mandate to employers as you noted, over 100 employees, and both companies and those companies face fines of up to 14,000 per infraction, should they not adhered to the president s call and mandate. Civil liberties of course i pretty heavily enshrined in the psyche of millions of americans. What level of challenge can we expect this order to receive. From the people on Main Street . This is a h er, people on Main Street . This is a hyper. Hyper people on Main Street . This is a hyper, Hyper Politicised a hyper, Hyper Politicised issue both here in the us and abroad and there is going to be challenges, no question, but i think all americans and everyone Around The World wants to return to whatever the new normal knees is and this is one step the us is taking and again, Hyper Politicised and people dug in on both sides. But again, we are hearing from our clients quite clearly that they want to get back to work. And i guess theres one question thats unanswered still, there is about 10 Million unfilled jobs in the us and what the Vaccine Mandate will do to those unfilled jobs, we dont know. But the economy is reopening, still fragile, and perhaps this step is one that will curtail the Delta Variant and new variants around that we see here again in the united states and abroad. You mentioned united states and abroad. You mentioned the united states and abroad. You mentioned the wider picture. Evenif mentioned the wider picture. Even if you look at france, even napoleon, who managed to bend most of europe to his will, was unable to get his population vaccinated against smallpox. So it will not be easy. I wonder if we can look quickly at the alternative scenario. If the us does not get a handle on the Delta Variant and if, as we are expecting from the scientist and their predictions, we see more variants popping up from the african continent, what is the african continent, what is the outlook for the pandemic here . I the outlook for the pandemic here . ~ , ,. , here . If Mu Presents in a way that it becomes here . If Mu Presents in a way that it becomes immune here . If Mu Presents in a way that it becomes immune to i here . If Mu Presents in a way. That it becomes immune to the vaccines, and no question we will seek new variants popping up, and where they are generated no one knows, but it will cause an already fragile economy to become more fragile. We may see lockdowns and new closures and again, no one wants to see that. Everyone wants to see that. Everyone wants to see that. Everyone wants to go to Work And Return to some sense of normalcy. But there is, this pandemic and this virus has proven to be very adaptive in a negative way and we have to do, as a human population, kind of rise to the challenge and try to find ways to beat it. Challenge and try to find ways to beat it to beat it. Chris campbell, we it there. Thank to beat it. Chris campbell, we it there. Thank you to beat it. Chris campbell, we it there. Thank you for to beat it. Chris campbell, we it there. Thank you for your i it there. Thank you for your time. We will leave it there. Lets stay in the us, where amazon has pledged to cover the full College Fees of over 750,000 of its frontline workers. It expects the plan to cost around 1. 2 billion over the next four years. A generous offer, maybe, but its all part of the battle to attract and retain staff in an increasingly tight us labour market, as Michelle Fleury reports from New York. Its the newest perk for american workers, with employers complaining that they cannot find staff, amazon is the latest large american company to offer to pay the full College Level College tuition for a 750,000 hourly us workers. It is not altruistic, such education benefits may help firms retain and attract staff. If people stay longer in the job staff. If people stay longer in thejob indicate it saves Companies Money and time Hiring And Training new staff. Big box retailers walmart and target overhauled their unveiled their College Plans in recent weeks, and Waste Management has gone further, offering the same education benefits to spouses and children of its staff. This is a big deal, collectively americans owe more than 1. 7 trillion in student debt. 1. 7 trillion. So for now the private sector, not government, is trying to address the problem, making college more affordable for working americans. However, given the restrictions on what type of Degree A student can get, little in the challenge of Balancing Shifts and studies, it remains to be seen whether this will become a way out of low paid jobs for many of these workers. Gervais williams is from the Fund Managers premier miton. Michelle was sort of mentioning it there, just described for our viewers across The World how dire the Labour Shortages in the united states. Its in the united states. Its interesting in the united states. Its interesting that in the united states. It s interesting that when you look at the recovery is been defined by all sorts of things, not just staffing, and they have made it hard for many companies to deliverfor their made it hard for many companies to deliver for their customers and i think the shortage of staff is one of the key areas and most intense areas and so i think this move by Amazon Underliesjust how much think this move by amazon underlies just how much they need staff, they are one of the largest employers in the us, and how keen they are because its costing them and off a lot of money but clearly its something that will deliver a lot of value to the staff to take on the scheme. Lot of value to the staff to take on the scheme. One point seven take on the scheme. One point seven one take on the scheme. One point seven one 3. 2 take on the scheme. One point seven one 3. 2 billion take on the scheme. One point seven one 3. 2 billion in seven one . 2 billion in just two years. It is in fact the Largestjobs Creator in The Worlds largest economy. Now taking on a sort of pretty pivotal role in education, normally something that is the preserve of governments. Would you describe this as corporate overreach . Overreach . Certainly not, clearly it overreach . Certainly not, clearly it does overreach . Certainly not, clearly it does deliver overreach . Certainly not, clearly it does deliver for| overreach . Certainly not,. Clearly it does deliver for the staff but also for the company so you want your staff to have education and deliver to your customers but i think it underlines a change in trend, and if you look at the last 30 years generally the cost of employment relative to gdp has been declining, we have low cost imports, but now we are seeing the cost of Employment Beginning to rise as a percentage of gdp and i think it will put pressure on Profit Margins and make it harderfor companies to make profits and for those who are in all will succeed but many will not be able to keep up which may find it more difficult to compete going forward. It more difficult to compete going forward. One said they saw a surge going forward. One said they saw a surge in going forward. One said they saw a surge in applications i going forward. One said they| saw a surge in applications to participate in the Education Programmes they run since the start of the pandemic, up something like 400 , so what kind of impact can up skilling have on the value or contribution, if you like, on the value of an individual to an economy . An economy . One of the advantage an economy . One of the advantage of an economy . One of the advantage of actually an economy . One of the advantage of actually having well educated employees of courses it gives them much more flexibility and they are able to do more sophisticated roles and most particularly helps business which is like amazon very much Technology Led to actually deliver for customers so its absolutely important to all companies actually to step up all companies actually to step up in education but most particularly it delivers for the employees as well, they are more mobile, able to get more jobs, and able to get a better level of pay going forward which actually helps them in the long term in terms of paying for their house and their family paying for their house and theirfamily and such paying for their house and their family and such like. Interesting, thank you very much gervais. Gervais williams. Have a lovely weekend. Lets stay with the us. Lots of us Stories Today and its fractious relations with its biggest trading partner. Chinas President Xijinping has been holding talks by phone with President Biden. He told him that us policies towards beijing have caused serious difficulties and that putting ties back on track is critical to the destiny of The World. Its a sentiment echoed by us business leaders, who are still struggling with crippling trade tariffs. Nick marsh from our Asia Business Team is following this in singapore. Imean, i mean, could we expect or could we have expected warmer words . ~. , could we have expected warmer words . ~ ~. , words . Well, i think in many wa s words . Well, i think in many ways the words . Well, i think in many ways the most words . Well, i think in many ways the most significant words . Well, i think in many. Ways the most significant thing here was the conversation in itself, the fact that there was a phone call, the leaders of The Worlds two biggest superpowers had not spoken for almost seven months. Now on the us side they said the talks were candid but respectful and on chinas Sybase At Conversation was brought, candid, in depth and strategic. It was not a groundbreaking call, Nothing Concrete was achieved, but it wasnt really the purpose. A few interesting things emerged, with both sides agreed to stay in much more regular contact and we know President Biden was getting a bit frustrated with the lack of communication with china and both sides went through long periods of not talking to Each Other, especially during the trump administration, and secondly President Xi said it would look to co operate more on climate change, an area i know a lot of analysts think that President Bidens administration wants to and can maybe find some common ground with china but as we saw with the Climate Talks on the weekend in changing, there is still a long way to go. Another thing that xi said was although these policies, as you mentioned, had caused china what he calls seriously difficulties serious difficulties, he wanted to get the relationship back on the right track and not least of course when it comes to trade because it really is the big Sticking Point between the two countries, a survey released today by the us Chamber Of Commerce in china, saying a massive 78 of firms was still hurting from those tariffs so a lot of work to be done. Lot of work to be done. Thank ou, lot of work to be done. Thank you. Nick. Technology is changing the way that we work faster than at any other time in history. Digitisation, robotics and ai will make some Jobs Unrecognisable in the coming years and make others disappear altogether. So how do we keep up . Thats the Question Aaron Heslehust has been exploring. Will i be replaced by a robot . Warnings that robots are coming For Ourjobs is not new. In the 19305 For Ourjobs is not new. In the 1930s the Economistjohn Maynard keys talked of a new disease that he called technological unemployment. What we will see more and more is how humans and robots will interact and build on Each Other very much a combination and a collaboration between the human and The Machine. John maynard keynes. Abs, human and The Machine. John maynard keynes. Human and The Machine. John maynard keynes. A Natural Human Ca abilities maynard keynes. A natural Human Capabilities that maynard keynes. Once we structure unstructured problem. Once we structure it The Machine or the Robot Structure it The Machine or the Robot Or Structure it The Machine or the robot or the ai can crush it. The robot or the ai can crush it. The Bod Robot or the ai can crush it. The bod economic forum estimates that automation will replace about 85 Million jobs by 2025 but it will create 97 Million and surely its not realistic to expect, i dont know, all Factory Workers to be able to retrain as, say, technicians or engineers. Brute technicians or engineers. We think about technicians or engineers. Think about 50 of the jobs from what we see Today Need and evolution. Probably another 2025 evolution. Probably another 20 25 actually need requalification and reskilling. Youve brought people back to the small bench after 20 or 30 years of being out of score. We are looking forward to these robots assisting and in tasks of daily activities and it may not be unlikely that we could cross, say, one doesnt robots from our home on our way into work. One dozen robots. And viewers on bbc World News can watch talking business with Aaron Heslehurst this weekend. The times are on your screen now with the first airing at 2330 gmt on saturday. The big changes been working from home means they dont have to dress up means they dont have to dress up for the office, so the Office Dressing Trend has gone and employers are much more relaxed about what people can wear and people make happy when they wear clothes and we sell happiness. Despite the pandemic or in some cases because of it some 400,000 people have set up their own companies here in the uk since the start of this year. Sharmadean reid, founder of the beauty stack, is one of them. Shes launched a platform to help other female Entrepreneurs Network and secure funding. And for that shes just been awarded the veuve clicquot bold future award. Here she is with the Vaccine Pioneer Dame sarah gilbert, who was also honoured at the event. We can talk to Sharmadean Reid now. Not looking hung over in the slightest looking very sharp indeed and firstly, many congratulations to you, very much a pandemic business. Why was this W2w Business needed . Ive been thinking about why the needle was not moving in terms of gender equality, and why we have such poor statistics about equality in the Work Place and for me, was more about the knowledge, they need to see female role models, understand how to set up businesses, get funding and the network. If they are not part of an alumnus i at bridge or a Big Bang columnar i had a they build their Power Network at Big Bank and then either Commerce And Tech tools to buy and sell from Each Other. That my Driving Force behind this dark world which we launched earlier and on on the Stack World. Earlier and on on the Stack World. ~. ,. ,. , world. We all know about the bo s world. We all know about the Boys Network world. We all know about the Boys Network but world. We all know about the Boys Network but why world. We have quite a few male members who are supporting us on our journey and in november we are doing an all male Speaker Line up doing an all male Speaker Line up and weve had interest from Twitter And Goldman sachs and its important to have men around the table in these conversations. That said, there is still a need for spaces from women to talk frankly and freely without feeling judged in that old Boys Network. So, there has been so much around womens communities around the last ten years or so and what i would like to see is my Stack World members getting lawyers and other professionals to all those things that the old boys differ Each Other which is why they are empowered. You have described they are empowered. You have described the they are empowered. You have described the stack they are empowered. You have described the stack as described the stack as achieving, somewhat is the metrics that of success for you . Are we right really engaging editorial content. After that, what we are launching is the commerce path, the ability of the young drop in air to buy and sell services from other young entrepreneurs, people who are a coach or a Mortgage Broker or whatever you need to do to get started, you can do it on our platform and that is how we see the cycle to make that change. On your point about a metric of success, i want a global network of millions of women buying and selling on our platform. Thank ou so selling on our platform. Headlines in five minutes time. See you soon. Hello there. The past 24 hours have seen the downpours arrive and the Heat Ebb away. But with fewer Showers Yesterday across some Eastern Parts of england, we saw temperatures getting up to 27 degrees in suffolk, very warm for this time of the year. It was 26 in cromer, 25 in the east midlands. Charterhall, though, in the Scottish Borders was 29 degrees on wednesday. Thursday was 10 degrees cooler, as the rain arrived. And earlier in the night, we had some torrential thundery downpours in northern england. That led to some Flash Flooding in some areas. But the worst is now over, the showers are heading their way northwards into scotland. Many places will start dry, i think, on friday morning. As you can see, its warm. Its also muggy, hence some Mist And Fog around following those downpours in the north. That will lift, though, with still a lot of cloud around during friday. And as you can see, those showers are going to develop more widely, turning heavy and possibly thundery. Maybe fewer showers for wales and the southwest, but more showers than we saw on thursday for Eastern Parts of england. But despite that, temperatures still could reach 23 or 24 degrees. Elsewhere, its going to be nearer 20 or 21 celsius still pretty good, though, for this time of year. Now, the fifth Test Match should be starting at Old Trafford on friday. There may well be some heavy showers around, mind you. The weekend does look drier, but it will be cooler as well. Now, low pressure has been moving across the uk. Thats brought the drop in temperature with those heavy, thundery showers, but the low is moving away towards scandinavia this weekend, so things will turn drier, but it does mean well introduce more of a northwesterly breeze. And that will bring with it some Cooler Air from the north as well. Weve still got some wet weather around on saturday across northern most parts of scotland. The rain could be quite heavy here, actually. But elsewhere, there are fewer showers, lighter showers, many places will be dry. Some sunshine coming through now and again and some quite light winds as well. But temperatures are dropping away in scotland and Northern Ireland in that Cooler Air, so 17 degrees. Still quite warm, though, across england and wales, especially towards the southeast. Now, On Sunday, its dry from northern scotland, there are very few showers again On Sunday, probably a fair bit of cloud. Got to keep an eye on this Developing Rain Towards the southwest, perhaps, but the Cooler Air will be pushing down across more of the country, with a high On Sunday in the southeast of 21 celsius. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with Charlie Stayt and naga munchetty. Our headlines today. Game, Set And Match to raducanu, two sets to love, 6 1, 6 1. Cheering.
