Of kabul. It has now landed in doha with some 200 foreign nationals on board. Meanwhile, inside afghanIstan, the taliban continues to crackdown on protesters. Also, claims journalIsts have been to crackdown on protesters. Also, claimsjournalIsts have been beaten as they cover the demonstrations. And we will look at what Is to blame for the shortages in the uk. Is it Brexit Or Covid . France has accused the Uk Government of breaking the law in its new Hardline Policy in preventing migrants from crossing the channel. The Ish-government'>BritIsh Government has authorIsed the Border Force to turn back some boats in limited circumstances. A Record Number of migrants have attempted the dangerous crossing between Southern England and Northern France thIs summer. Over 1,500 migrants have arrived in britain thIs week. 785 on monday. ThIs can be signed off by the Home Secretary. ThIs Is conservative mp tim loughton. It sounds good, and i have every sympathy for the Home Secretary. These are very flimsy boats coming over, even those that are now a bit tougher are completely weighed down. Any boat coming alongside at speed would capsize one of these boats anyway, and then we are looking at people getting into trouble in the water and inevitably, i fear, drowning. There Is incredible they have not been any so far in britIsh waters. And then of course we will be blamed for that. It sounds as though we are pushing them back, but it will not work in practice. That Is one perspective it will not work in practice. That Is one perspective from it will not work in practice. That Is one perspective from the uk. ThIs Is one perspective from the uk. ThIs Is the perspective of the french government. In a tweet, french Ister-gerald'>Interior MinIster Gerald darmanin said france would not accept any practice that breaks maritime law. The Uks Commitment must be kept, he said. He went on the friendship between our two countries deserves better than posturing which undermines the cooperation between our countries. And Heres Nick Beake in the french port of calaIs. You can see that dues have formed here. Just having a conversation with a view people, they are mainly from somalia, sudan, a view from afghanIstan, and i think if london hopes that tough talk on thIs Issue, the prospect of sending boats back to french waters, whether that would really deter people from travelling to the united kingdom are trying to get there, i think that tough talk Is probably fallen on deaf ears because everyone we have spoken to here hasnt given any indication at all that they would be able to consider, reconsidertheirattempt to get to the united kingdom. Actually, what people are saying Is that it actually, what people are saying Is thatitIs actually, what people are saying Is that it Is the weather that Is more important as to whether or not they set off, and crucially whether they have any Money Stop Thousands of euros in some cases, thousands of dollars, to pay to people smugglers for a place in the boat. ThIs hasnt come out of the blue. The bbc has been told that a Border Force team has been training for months to begin the operation and that a final training may take place within days subject to the weather. The channel Is one of the busiest Shipping Lanes in the world. At its narrowest point, it Is a 33 kilometres wide, and Migrant Boat Crossings have been increasing. Italy for example has had more than 39,000 migrants arrive thIs year. As you know, italy sets off the mediterranean and turning boats back in some circumstances has been done there, but it has never been done before in the channel. Some are arguing itjust Is not practical. Where a vessel Is crossing the channel where it Is safe, the vessel Is no weight vulnerable, it Is believed to be possible to use Uk Vessels to encourage vessel to turn back, and it must turn back into a perception from a french vessel. You cantjust perception from a french vessel. You cant just turn the Vessel Perception from a french vessel. You cantjust turn the vessel back perception from a french vessel. You cant just turn the vessel back and leave it or play Cat And Mouse up the channel. But the restrictions around it, what makes the safe and unsafe, are really so tight that actually its going to be quite an unusual, rare, if ever occurrence. It certainly cannot happen without their cooperation. You have to turn a vessel back into be Receiving Vessel, so if the french dont send a Receiving Vessel we cannot turn back. It ends at that point. If we did it in such a way as to put anybody s life at rIsk, that would be a violation of International Law and that Is not proposed. At all points throughout thIs process, the vessel, the people on it must all be entirely safe. Charities have urged the Home Office to take a more humane and responsible approach. And heres the the opposition labour party. No, i do not support thIs move. I think its an extraordinarily dangerous thing to be doing, and it Is an indication, frankly, of the Home Secretarys own failure. I was in dover last friday. I saw the work that was being done by Front Line law enforcement, saw the work being done by refugee charities, saw the work being done by the royal national lifeboat institute. They are people who have stepped up when required, are out there in dangerous conditions saving lives at sea. The Home Secretary has failed on thIs Issue, and im afraid thIs dangerous proposal Is an indication of that failure. Daniel sandford Is in dover. Can you help me understand in what circumstances the uk may attempt to turn a boat around . Turn a boat around . Well, as i understand turn a boat around . Well, as i understand it, turn a boat around . Well, as i understand it, the turn a boat around . Well, as i understand it, the home turn a boat around . Well, as i understand it, the Home Secretary has been consulting with the Government Law officers, including the attorney general, to try to work out where that would be legal and in what circumstances it would be legal, under both maritime and International Law. And they have identified what they are calling a narrow legal window where it would be legal to turn a boat around, push it back into french waters, as long as that could be done safely. And i think safely Is a key part of that. Clearly, if people are taking on water, if there are vulnerable people on board or if a Isnt'>Boat Isnt going to make it back to france then under other circumstances the legality would be questionable. But they think a robust boat with not too many people on board could be safely pushed back onto thIs Wrench Side and encouraged to motor back towards france. Whether that practically works of course Is a different question. But practically works of course Is a different question. Practically works of course Is a different question. But if thIs Is a narrow legal different question. But if thIs Is a narrow legal window, different question. But if thIs Is a narrow legal window, as different question. But if thIs Is a narrow legal window, as you different question. But if thIs Is a narrow legal window, as you describe it, Is thIs more about political positioning to the britIsh public Thanit Positioning to the britIsh public than it Is making a practical difference to the number of people that arrive . That arrive . LIsten, ithink its both. Ithink that arrive . LIsten, ithink its both. I think there that arrive . LIsten, ithink its both. I think there Is that arrive . LIsten, ithink its both. I think there Is a that arrive . LIsten, ithink its both. I think there Is a Sense L that arrive . LIsten, i think its. Both. I think there Is a sense in the Ish-government'>BritIsh Government that what the french are doing at the moment in terms of policing their coast simply Isnt working as it was put to me, the Ish-government'>BritIsh Government have given the Ish-government'>BritIsh Government have given the french quite a lot of money towards french policing, and if you let Isnt working. They feel they have to do everything that they can, and that would include some form of deterrence and thIs encouragement by pushing some boats back. Clearly, you are not going to be able to push back all the boats for the reasons we have already dIscussed, and clearly wouldnt even be able to because of the huge numbers on clear days. Today Is quite a clear day and we saw 50 or so migrants arriving. 0n we saw 50 or so migrants arriving. On days earlier thIs week when it was really clear and a flat calm, almost 800 people in a day. There Is no way you would be able to push back all those boats anyway. It Is also about showing you are trying to do something, and that Is very important, particularly for the Home Secretary, who at the moment Is under a lot of pressure, even from her own party, to try to get the numbers of people crossing the channel in boats down. Stay right there daniel. Injuly, the uk agreed to pay france £542 million to step up patrols along the french coastline. Since then, britain has threatened to withhold some of that money, unless more boats are intercepted. On monday, 785 migrants arrived into the uk. Another 378 were stopped in france. ThIs group made it into the uk in a small boat. 0n thIs group made it into the uk in a small boat. On tuesday, Downing Street said it was working on the implementation of the deal with france. We also heard thIs from the prime minIster. My right honourable friend, the Home Secretary, Is dealing with it in the best possible way, which Is to make sure that they dont leave those french shores. We depend to a large extent on what the french are doing, but clearly, as time goes on and thIs problem continues, we are going to have to make sure that we use every possible tactic at our dIsposal. So that was tuesday. On wednesday, Priti Patel held IsIs-'>CrIsIs talks with her french counterpart over the Issue. That ended in stalemate. Evidently, the two sides see thIs Issue quite differently. For example, a french Istry-source'>Interior MinIstry Source has told the guardian there had never been any question of making payment conditional on numerical targets. Such an approach would reflect a serious loss of confidence in our cooperation. And heres the french calaIs mp. We cannot stop all the crossings. That Is not possible to monitor kilometres of sure where you can hide in very different spaces. Daniel sandford Is in dover. If the uk was to turn a boat around and the french are claiming thIs Is illegal, might we be in a desperate situation where one of these inflatables Is being pushed one way and another by two of the most powerful countries in the world . Yeah, lIsten, clearly there are rIsks there, and the french are concerned about the safety rIsks. They have been Briefing Anyone who wants to lIsten about their concerns about that. I think, in truth, the britIsh would not be pushing an inflatable that was in poor condition back towards the french side. That Is not really what they are talking about. They are talking about more robust boats and boats that are in good condition. But the truth Is that those boats could simply turn back and motor back towards britain. You would need a french boat to a company that boat to the french Insurerfor French boat to a company that boat to the french insurer for it to really work, and the briefing by the french today has really been very, very strong. In one briefing that ive been given notes from by the french interior minIstry, they have said that the Uk Site made these announcements and we really hope that they will return to their senses as their propositions are not in the interest of anyone. 0ur Position Is firm, we consider it illegal and dangerous. And that Is coming directly from people inside the french and interior minIstry. Thank you very much indeed. The first people have flown out of afghanIstan since the us withdrew its forces 10 days ago. ThIs Is the qatar Airways Flight taking off from Kabul Airport earlier, on route to doha. More than 100 foreign nationals, including britIsh people. ThIs happened because the taliban gave it the go ahead. Experts from qatar have been in kabul helping the taliban get the airport back up and running. Heres our South Asia correspondent, yogita limaye. The qatari Special Envoy said in a press the qatari Special Envoy said in a Press Conference at Kabul Airport Today Press Conference at Kabul Airport Today that the airport Is fully up and running. They are also expecting one more and running. They are also expecting one more similar flight to Take Off tomorrow one more similar flight to Take Off tomorrow as well, to be operated Tomorrow Tomorrow as well, to be operated tomorrow as well, to be operated tomorrow as well. But there Is still no Clarity Tomorrow as well. But there Is still no clarity on tomorrow as well. But there Is still no clarity on when regular scheduled commercial no clarity on when regular scheduled commercial flights will be able to land into commercial flights will be able to land into Kabul Airport and Take Off, and land into Kabul Airport and Take Off, and one of the key considerations for commercial airlines considerations for commercial airlines will be the security of the kabul airlines will be the security of the Kabul Airport. Airlines will be the security of the kabulairport. So airlines will be the security of the Kabul Airport. So far, what weve heard Kabul Airport. So far, what weve heard from Kabul Airport. So far, what weve heard from qatar Is there are negotiations going on between them and the negotiations going on between them and the taliban about who will be handling and the taliban about who will be handling the security of the airport handling the security of the airport. But as of now, it doesnt seem airport. But as of now, it doesnt seem to airport. But as of now, it doesnt seem to have been finalIsed. And that Is seem to have been finalIsed. And that Is one seem to have been finalIsed. And that Is one of the reasons why we are not that Is one of the reasons why we are not yet that Is one of the reasons why we are not yet seeing it properly open for commercial airlines. Obviously great for commercial airlines. Obviously great news for commercial airlines. Obviously great news for evacuations once that airport great news for evacuations once that airport Is great news for evacuations once that airport Is properly open, but also for humanitarian aid Coming In, which for humanitarian aid Coming In, which Is for humanitarian aid Coming In, which Is much needed in afghanIstan iilht which Is much needed in afghanIstan right now which Is much needed in afghanIstan right now. In a which Is much needed in afghanIstan riaht now. ,. , right now. In a separate development, right now. In a separate l development, journalIsts right now. In a separate development, journalIsts in afghanIstan say they have been beaten and flogged while covering protests. The pictures we are about to show you are dIstressing. ThIs Is nematullah Nak Dee and taki dar yabi. They had been covering a womens protest in kabul On Wednesday when they were taken to a police station. They say they were beaten with batons, Electrical Cables and whips. Nematullah told the afp news agency. Yesterday they caused the called the protests illegal. Saying they were the protests illegal. Saying they were done with the intent of creating were done with the intent of creating chaos. They have effectively banned protests like these effectively banned protests like these because they say that demonstrators need to get permIssion. And tell Security Services permIssion. And tell Security Services notjust about permIssion. And tell Security Services not just about when and where services not just about when and where the services not just about when and where the protest will be held, but what slogans will be raIsed and what banners what slogans will be raIsed and what banners will be dIsplayed. Ive been speaking banners will be dIsplayed. Ive been speaking to women demanding their rights, speaking to women demanding their rights, they were at the Capital Yesterday and also out today. They have been yesterday and also out today. They have been saying whatever happens, even despite the rIsks they are facing. Even despite the rIsks they are facing, and they told me they were whipped facing, and they told me they were whipped and that they were beaten with batons, but despite that they say they with batons, but despite that they say they will continue going out. One woman said she will go again and aain one woman said she will go again and again until one woman said she will go again and again until she Is killed by the taliban, again until she Is killed by the taliban, because it Is better to die once taliban, because it Is better to die once than taliban, because it Is better to die once than to die gradually. Their main once than to die gradually. Their main concern Is whether they will be able to main concern Is whether they will be able to go main concern Is whether they will be able to go back to theirjobs, because able to go back to theirjobs, because as of now the taliban have said they because as of now the taliban have said they dont want women to work given said they dont want women to work given the said they dont want women to work given the security situation. Another development Is the taliban appear to have banned women from playing sport in afghanIstan. ThIs Is what the head of the groups cultural commIssion told australian broadcaster sbs. Translation it Is the Media Era and there will be photos and videos, and then people watch it. Islam and the Islamic emirate do not allow women to play cricket or play the kind of sports where they get exposed. Girls do not need sport. Theyll get exposed and not follow the Dress Code and Islam does not allow that. Well, that led to australia reconsidering an upcoming Mens Game with afghanIstan, saying in a statement. Its also raIsed questions about the safety of sportswomen still in afghanIstan. The bbc reported last week that female cricket players are in hiding in kabul. And thIs Is the times reporting that although much of the Womens Football Team were evacuated, the Youth Team were unable to leave. Khalida popal Is the former captain of the afghanIstan Womens Football Team. She fled afghanIstan in 2011 after threats to her safety. Thank you very much indeed for speaking with us on the bbc. And what great danger and are not protected. And what are they doing to try to avoid that date the Micro Danger . I wonder how you would like the what they are doing. I wonder how you would like the world what they are doing. I wonder how you would like the world to what they are doing. I wonder howl you would like the world to respond to thIs . I was mentioning the Cricket Australia Is potentially going to refuse to play the Mens Team if thIs Is the talibans position. Would you like to see that elsewhere in other sports . ThIs position. Would you like to see that elsewhere in other sports . Elsewhere in other sports . ThIs Is the time, elsewhere in other sports . If they allow the womens and put pressure. If they allow the Womens Participation in sport, good, Womens Participation in sport, good, everyone can participate in sport good, everyone can participate in sport. They good, everyone can participate in sport. They should notjust good, everyone can participate in sport. They should not just let one gender sport. They should not just let one gender to sport. They should not just let one gender to participate in any sport. And the gender to participate in any sport. And the other gender. It Is time for the and the other gender. It Is time for the sport and the other gender. It Is time for the sport Governing Bodies to stand for the sport Governing Bodies to stand with the women of afghanIstan, to stand stand with the women of afghanIstan, to stand and be their voices, because to stand and be their voices, because their dreams and voices have been taken because their dreams and voices have been taken from them. But because their dreams and voices have been taken from them. Because their dreams and voices have been taken from them. But given that the taliban Is been taken from them. But given that the taliban Is saying been taken from them. But given that the taliban Is saying women been taken from them. But given that the taliban Is saying women cannot i the taliban Is saying women cannot play sport, do you think perhaps the afghanIstan womens Women Team in the short term will need to be based outside of afghanIstan . Yes. The short term will need to be based outside of afghanIstan . Outside of afghanIstan . Yes, that Is the thin. Outside of afghanIstan . Yes, that Is the thing right outside of afghanIstan . Yes, that Is the thing. Right now, outside of afghanIstan . Yes, that Is the thing. Right now, some outside of afghanIstan . Yes, that Is the thing. Right now, some of outside of afghanIstan . Yes, that Is the thing. Right now, some of our. The thing. Right now, some of our players the thing. Right now, some of our players have been dIsplaced. They are in players have been dIsplaced. They are in danger. And we cannot keep them are in danger. And we cannot keep them longer in afghanIstan because them longer in afghanIstan because the taliban Is very much against women the taliban Is very much against Women Participation in any Sport Or Activity Women Participation in any Sport Or Activity Is Women Participation in any Sport Or Activity Is in Women Participation in any Sport Or Activity Is in afghanIstan. It Is not the activity Is in afghanIstan. It Is not the only sports. What they have been not the only sports. What they have been saying in the media, what they are doing been saying in the media, what they are doing so opposite each other. There are doing so opposite each other. There Is are doing so opposite each other. There Is contradiction in what they are saving there Is contradiction in what they are saying to media. They dont see women are saying to media. They dont see women as are saying to media. They dont see women as part of the population. They women as part of the population. They only women as part of the population. They only see men only as part of the population. And taliban has not changed. The population. And taliban has not changed, based on what we are seeing in the changed, based on what we are seeing in the past changed, based on what we are seeing in the past two weeks. They will never in the past two weeks. They will never change and there Is no hope for women never change and there Is no hope for women in that Country. Never change and there Is no hope for women in that Country. Thank you ve much for women in that Country. Thank you very much for for women in that Country. Thank you very much for speaking for women in that Country. Thank you very much for speaking with for women in that Country. Thank you very much for speaking with us. For women in that Country. Thank you very much for speaking with us. We l very much for speaking with us. We appreciate your time. Best of luck to the people you are in touch with. As ever, theres lots more reporting about afghanIstan on our website, along with thIs piece from our chief international Correspondent Lyse Doucet about the New Order in afghanIstan, including great analysIs about the talibans new government. Thats at bbc. Com news. 20 years on from the 9 11 attacks, the man thought to have masterminded them Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and hIs key associates are in Guantanamo Bay Detention facility, yet to stand trial. When president obama took office in 2009 he pledged to close the prIson within a year, but its still there and the wheels of american justice are turning extremely slowly. Aleem maqbool reports from guantanamo bay. In a tiny corner of cuba, one notorious By Product of the 9 11 attacks still remains. PrIsoners are still being held in limbo in guantanamo bay. While of course the us authorities have allowed us to be here, they are extremely restrictive in controlling what we can show in terms of people and structures. They certainly havent allowed us anywhere near the Detention Facilities where the remaining prIsoners are being held. Many of these original camps have been long abandoned. Now 39 prIsoners remain. Some were cleared for release as far back as 2010 but are still waiting to leave. Others have been designated forever prIsoners because of the threat they are thought to pose. But ten have been charged and are due to face military trials. They include five men accused of involvement in the 9 11 attacks. For the first time in more than 18 months, those five men were in a Court Room together. We couldnt film it of course, but we were in the galleryjust behind the glass when these men appeared for their pre trial hearing, including at the front here the man with the ginger beard, which was Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. The man who it Is believed conceived of the idea of the 9 11 attacks and took that idea to osama bin laden. The proceedings themselves were extremely slow. One of the main obstacles in terms of the arguments going forward Is what evidence Is admIssible and what cant be admitted because of torture. Its one of the reasons why the Family Members of victims of 9 11, some of whom were here in the gallery observing events, are unlikely to get a resolution in thIs case soon. People often ask, Is there an end in sight . And for a long, long time there was not even a middle in sight. But now we are in the middle of the case, wrestling with the question of what Effect Torture has on the admIssibility of statements Is really the heart of the case. And so mIstakes of the past are having a bearing on the Search Forjustice now over 9 11. With no trial dates even having been set, the Detention Centre here looks no closer to shutting down. Aleem maqbool, Bbc News, guantanamo bay. Alka pradhan Is a un human Rights Attorney representing one of the five men accused of plotting the 9 11 attacks here she Is on her experience representing guantanamos detainees. My client, ammar al baluchi, has been in us custody for 18 years. 3. 5 years in Cia Custody at black sites being tortured and then 15 years, actually, as of September 6th 2006, here at guantanamo bay. And what i usually talk to him about, in addition to the court case, actually more than the court case, Is medical care. Only 44 years old and he Is deteriorating from the torture that was inflicted on him, and from day to day Is really suffering with a lack of medical care. So that Is what i talk to him about most of the time. Part of the problem Is that when we initially started bringing men from afghanIstan and pakIstan here to guantanamo, there was no Vetting System on the ground and so our policy in afghanIstan in particular was to bring them to guantanamo and sort them out then. And what we were doing on the ground in afghanIstan in particular, and the border areas of pakIstan, was dropping leaflets offering Massive Bounties for anyone associated with alqaeda, and what ended up happening Is a lot of people were brought here on no information at all who should not have been here, who were turned in for the bounty. I used to represent men on that side of things, trying to get them cleared for release and eventually released. And in almost every case, we could show the bounty was paid for them and they should never have been brought here. The problem Is that it opens up the us to legal liability and so they have to actually labelled these men as no longer Enemy Combatants the implication being that they were at some point combatants, which makes it very difficult to resettle them. A quick reminder, you can find reports from me and the outside Source Team on different parts of the bbc. Head to. You can also find Audio Versions of them on the bbc sounds apt wherever you are in the world, and shorter versions of our videos on the Bbc News website as well. As expected, the best of the weather was in the South East of england are here in east anglia, and also into lincolnshire. Tempers in cambridge were 25 degrees. 26 celsius thIs afternoon in norwich. Further west, temperatures have been much lower. 29 degrees in the scottIsh borders. A significant drop in Temperature Today because of The Rain clouds. Most of those storms have been across northern and western areas. There will be heavy showers around as we head further into the night, particularly across scotland. The heavier rain moving forward and continuing to be pretty west in the North East of scotland. Eight view showers elsewhere, across parts of england and wales. Many places turning dry. Muggy air, there will be some Ist-and-fog'>MIst And Fog around. That will tend to lift, they will not be a huge amount of sunshine tomorrow. Once again, we will see that showers developing more widely. ThIs time, we shouldnt see so many showers across wales and the south west, but we will see many more showers across the Eastern Parts of england. They could well be thundery. Still, some decent enough temperatures for thIs time of year. 20 21 for many other parts of the uk. The showers have been courtesy of thIs area of low pressure that Is going to start to run away as we head further into the weekend, and things are going to turn drier. As the low pressure moves away we will start to draw in a north westerly breeze, and that will drop the temperatures as we had to do weekend. We still have some rain around on saturday in northern parts of scotland, but away from here you were showers, lighter showers, many places will be dry. Perhaps not huge amounts of sunshine and the winds for many will be light, only around 17 degrees in scotland. Forthe light, only around 17 degrees in scotland. For the second half of the weekend, The Rain Is gone from Northern Scotland and again there are very few showers. Many places will be dry. Still a fair bit of cloud around on sunday. ThIs Rain Looks like its going to stay away from most areas. That cool area starting to arrive across england and wales, where we see a Top Temperature of 21 celsius in the South East and east anglia. Hello, im ros atkins. ThIs Is outside source. There Is a Cross Channel Row as thousands more migrants have reached the uk from france. The uk Is now saying it may turn some boats back, and france says thIs Is dangerous and illegal. A correspondent in calaIs says people seeking a better life dont appear deterred. The process of sending both back to french waters, whether that would deter people from travelling to the united kingdom are trying to get there, i think that talk Is probably falling on deaf ears. Weve seen a Civilian Plane in afghanIstan flying out of kabul for the first time since us forces withdrew. The taliban continues to clap down. There are claims ofjournalIst being beaten. We are looking at whats to blame for the shortages in some shops in the uk. Is it brexit, Covid Or Something else . Lets turn to the uk now and spend a few minutes looking at an Issue affecting the supply chain, one thats showing its effects in a number of places. Theres a Lorry Driver Shortage in the uk. Dairy farmers are being told to dump their milk. Me and 28 other farmers have got to pull the plug because we havent got any drivers. Weve lost two drivers and some havent turned up. In some shops, the shelves are empty. Were out of products. Theres no business because you need to have the products to sell. With empty shelves like thIs, no ones going to come into the shop anyway. Its a problem now. Its a problem looking ahead. Stock Is becoming a bit of an Issue for us everyday items from Play Doh to Doll Houses its becoming a problem getting the stock in and guaranteeing were going to get it in before chrIstmas. But why Is thIs happening . ThIs Is Nicola Sturgeons answer. I really do think conservatives should take some responsibility because it Is entirely inflicted by their obsession with brexit. The conservatives, though, dont agree. To say that thIs Is just an Issue to say that thIs Isjust an Issue of press to say that thIs Isjust an Issue of press that to say that thIs Isjust an Issue of press that Is to say that thIs Isjust an Issue of press that Is completely untrue what press that Is completely untrue what It Press that Is completely untrue what it Is press that Is completely untrue what it Is about Is coronavirus. To assess thIs, we should start with the industry itself. One estimate says 90,000 drivers are needed. The Road Haulage Association asked its members why. 58 said brexit. The industry had for years relied heavily on drivers from the eu. And as Market Researchers transport intelligence points out numbers from the office for national statIstics certainly shows certainly show a drop in Eu Drivers. There were 300,000 Truck Drivers in the uk at the start of the pandemic in 2020. 40,000 of them were from the eu. That number has now fallen by 15,000. Crucially, though, 50,000 uk based drivers have left the profession, three times more than the fall in Eu Drivers. Also, those Eu Drivers that did leave could have stayed. They may have left indirectly because of brexit, but they didnt have to. They may have left because of covid or other reasons instead. And look at thIs map. The Isnt'>Uk Isnt the only Country with Driver Shortages. The countries shaded darkest have the highest number of vacancies. Germany Is third. The uk second. Poland Is first. It has 120,000 vacancies. The bbc s Adam Easton explains some of the reasons. They say there are not enough incentives to attract younger polIsh drivers and its expensive to obtain a licence. Rather than spend weeks on the road abroad, often younger drivers prefer to stay closer to home, Levering Parcels and career services. And these shortages elsewhere have been noted. David Campbell Bannerman Is a former ukip mp. ThIs doesnt look definite, though, because there are two parts to thIs why the shortages happened and why the uk Is struggling to respond. David hennig Is a trade expert. He notes and thIs Is maybe how best to see thIs shortage. Now, brexit Is far from the primary cause for the initial drop in driver numbers. But brexit has complicated how the uk handles thIs shock. Heres one Industry Analyst explaining why. Theres a bit of a reluctance amongst theres a bit of a reluctance amongst some European Carriers to come amongst some European Carriers to come into amongst some European Carriers to come into the uk because costs are unbalanced. Its difficult for them to know unbalanced. Its difficult for them to know they have a load to go back with to know they have a load to go back with with to know they have a load to go back with. With brexit, there are the extra challenges are on that and covid extra challenges are on that and covid as extra challenges are on that and covid as well. Brexit has complicated recruitment, but covid has done that, too. ThIs Is Alex Veitch from logIstics uk. The bbc has learnt that theres been a significant increase in reports of Health Incidents affecting us spies and diplomats in recent months. Originally known as havana syndrome, officials say the condition has now spread beyond cuba to every continent. The symptoms include hearing strange sounds and a feeling of heat or pressure. Heres our security correspondent, gordon corera. Cheering and whIstling in 2015, the us reopened its embassy in cuba, as relations between the countries were restored, but then something happened. Diplomats and spies began to hear sounds and fall ill with a mysterious illness that people struggled to explain what became known as havana syndrome. The Istration'>Trump AdminIstration announced friday that it Is pulling more than half of its staff out of the american embassy in havana. But it wasntjust havana. On a Trip To Moscow A year later, senior Cia Officer Marc polymeropolous says he suffered similar symptoms. It Is real, we have to get our People Health Care and then we have to find out whos doing thIs because, as i have always contended, thIs Is an act of war against us officials. Her flight was delayed for several hours because at least one us diplomat had to be medevaced. But some have questioned whether the syndrome Is real, suggesting that the stress caused whats called a psychogenic illness of the mind, which Is now spreading. When you see mass psychogenic illnesses, theres usually some stressful situation, an underlying situation. And of course, in the case of cuba and the embassy employees, particularly the cia agents, they certainly were in a stressful situation. In the last year, new evidence has emerged. That Led A Panel of scientIsts, sponsored by the state department, to conclude that pulsed microwaves were most likely responsible in at least some of the cases. For many of these people, real injury, Real Neurologic Injury took place. It took place through a mechanIsm that we cannot precIsely pinpoint, but we think could be linked to thIs relatively unusual mechanIsm that really has not received a whole lot of Study Pulse Microwave energy. Definitive evidence of what started in cuba remains elusive. Some link it to electronic surveillance. Others, a weapon. But with cases now emerging in every continent, the biden adminIstration has made solving thIs mystery a national security priority. Gordon corera, Bbc News. North korea has held a Military Parade to mark the communIst states 73rd founding anniversary, but did not dIsplay any major ballIstic mIssiles. Somewhat out of character. Laura bicker has been following the developments for neighbouring South Korea a warning her report contains some flash photography. State media photos of the night time parade showed marching soldiers and workers in Hazmat Suits instead. A noticeably slimmer kim Jong Un was seen on State Media waving at the Midnight Parade in pyongyang, hugging children among the unmasked crowds. Once again looking slim, bringing speculation about thIs weight loss. The parade ended with thIs huge fireworkds dIsplay. ThIs Is North Koreas third parade in a year, and even for North Korea thats extremely frequent. We saw what we expect to see. Thousands of goose stepping soldiers. We saw fire trucks and tractors. We also saw many students, armed civilians, all parading past leader kim Jong Un, who waved to the crowds. The parade ended in a huge Isplay'>Firework DIsplay and applause, and of course kimJong Un even met young children. No masks were seen at the parade. I think one thing that did stand out to me, though, was a troop in orange or red Hazmat Suits with gas masks. Now, it Is thought that the special unit could have been set up as a covid 19 prevention squad, but we dont know for sure. Its certainly a new addition to the parade. What we didnt see were any new strategic or ballIstic Issiles-anything'>MIssiles Anything that they have shown last october when we saw a massive dIsplay of new weapons, including a very large ballIstic weapon, the largest they have ever unveiled. In contrast, thIs was more about domestic product, factories and factory workers, and tractors. So really trying to shore up domestic support. When it comes to these parades, they have two main purposes. The first Is to show off to the international community. Look how strong we are. But i think on thIs occasion its about shoring up domestic support, showing the people that theyre strong, that they can come together, even in difficult times. And lets face it, North Korea Is facing a IsIs-'>CrIsIs'>Food CrIsIs at the moment. Last yea r s harvest was badly damaged by a series of typhoons. Border closures mean that vital supplies are not Coming In from china. The regime itself has admitted that there Is a IsIs-'>CrIsIs'>Food CrIsIs. And then, of course, there Is a deepening economic IsIs-'>CrIsIs caused by there Is a border closures. So when it comes to trying to perhaps cheer up the people, boost morale, that Is the kind of thing thIs parade might be for. Hey, look at the fireworks, perhaps forget about the fact that your bellies are empty. Stay with me on outside source. We will say Coal And Gas reserves need to remain in the ground for any chance of reverting Climate Change. We will speak to a campaigner on how that may be possible. If you have young children, you may know about the newest toy craze, puppets. Where did they come from . The idea Is very simple colourful rubber toys with bubbles you can push in and out. But thIs craze has been decades in the making. The original was developed in the 1970s by two Israeli games designers. Among other games, they designed Guess Who . Their son now runs the Family Company with hIs brother. He explains how hIs mother had the idea. Years passed, and a canadian Games Company called foxmind bought the idea. It was marketed as last one lost, a game for two players who try not to push out the last bubble. But it didnt sell in great numbers, until one arrived in the postbox of a monkey in north carolina, usa, who happens to have a Big Social Media following. Somebody sent her a Pop It for her birthday, and it was called the last one, and that was the first we had ever seen of them, and i dont know if it Is an original or whatnot, but then they started making all these other brands and then all her fans kept sending them and sending them and sending them. Its wild to us. We never imagined it would get to where it has gotten to. Since then, the progress of Pop Its has been unstoppable, but many of the toys you see on shelves are made by other countries, without official licenses. We get a fraction, a tiny fraction. Sales of between 500. Million, A Billion copies. 99. 99 of them are knock offs, are not the best quality. They do what they can to fight the pirates, through the law and developing new products, but all the same, the brothers say they are happy that the game their parents invented did at last prove a winner. Ben king, Bbc News. ThIs Is outside source live from the Bbc Newsroom. Our lead story. The uk Is saying it could push back some migrant boats trying to come across france. French officials do occur described thIs Is dangerous and illegal. ScientIsts at University College london are saying to keep global warning below preindustrial levels, there must be an end to burning Fossil Fuels. To give the world a 50 50 chance of keeping global temperature increases to 1. 5c, scientIsts say nearly 60 of global Oil And Gas reserves and 90 of coal must remain in the ground. In vancouver Is tzeporah berman, who chairs the Fossil Fuel non proliferation treaty initiative, a global campaign to phase out fossilfuels and support a just transition. But t aggressive timelines. But i understand aggressive timelines. But i understand the aggressive timelines. But i l understand the practicalities aggressive timelines. I suppose im trying to ask Is the way our world works relies on energy, which often comes from Fossil Fuels. Energy, which often comes from fossilfuels. Whats energy, which often comes from Fossil Fuels. Whats your suggestion if that were to radically reduce our Energy Consumption . We dont have the technology to replace it yet. But the fact Is that we already have enough Fossil Fuels under production and in the system. More than enough to meet the needs of the world while we transition to renewable energy and electrification. And we actually do have the Technology Today to replace most of the uses of Fossil Fuels. I think one of the main problems Is that every Country and every company thinks that their project Is going to fit, but no new projects fit. If we are going to ensure safety. Were already experiencing unprecedented heat, but if we are going to do thIs, its not just about people changing their lives. Its about governments acting now. We will need international attention and global cooperation, and thats why thIs Is not enough. Why Is it then, if you say technology will be in place when we need it and we have sufficient Fossil Fuels for the immediate term, why Is it that more governments are not persuaded of what youre suggesting and what the study Is suggesting . Our governments agree that thIs needs to happen, but we dont have a system for negotiations on how do we wind down Fossil Fuel production, and thats why a growing number of leaders around the world are calling for a Fossil Fuel treaty to negotiate the wind down of Fossil Fuel production because every Country wants to remain competitive. The scottIsh parliament has voted to introduce of Vaccine Passport scheme. Lorna gordon has more, and a report does contain flashing images. Its packed, and theyre having a party. In three weeks time, these clubbers will have to prove theyve been double vaccinated to get in. I think its good to show that youve had the vaccine, and its good to encourage people to get the vaccine as well. People our age are the ones going out, and, like, not all of us have actually had the chance to be fully vaccinated yet, so thats not very fair. Masks are not required here while drinking or dancing, but are needed elsewhere. Nightclubs were one of the last sectors to reopen, and some owners believe, with these measures, they are again being singled out. Why not bring them in, if theyre going to bring them in at all, for all of hospitality . But the Ish-government'>ScottIsh Government warns larger events pose rIsks, and believes Vaccine Passports will directly reduce the transmIssion in the settings. That Vaccine Certification could give people a false sense of security. But you could still be carrying covid, and you will be allowed into the nightclub to infect everyone else. That thIs Is a medical id in all but name. Let me be clear, vaccines are without question our best route out of the pandemic, but Vaccine Passports are not. Certification has, by the governments own admIssion, provoked controversy and debate, and there was a small protest outside Parliament Today against it. The need to carry a Vaccine Passport to enter nightclubs and other large events will be reviewed on a regular basIs, but the government hopes thIs will push more eligible people to get vaccinated and help avoid further lockdowns. Lorna gordon, Bbc News. Authorities in australias biggest city, sydney, have announced a plan to relax coronavirus restrictions by mid autumn. The city, the capital of New South Wales, has been in Lockdown Sincejuly due to a delta variant outbreak. Reopening will happen once 70 of adults are double vaccinated. Theyre currently at around 43 . ThIs marks a major Policy Change in how New South Wales Is tackling coronavirus. Heres the state premier, gladys berejiklian. All of thIs Is on the day were the state has recorded about since the beginning of the pandemic. About for australia, these are huge numbers. But those freedoms that have been announced were not conditioned on lowering the number of cases any more, they were conditioned on the number of vaccinations of people fully vaccinating, double doses reaching 70 . Now, there are a couple of things here that we need to look out for. One Is how people prove that they are vaccinated. There Is a suggestion of a Vaccination Passport or a vaccination app. We still have to hear confirmation about that and iron these details out. The other thing that we are looking out for Is the reaction of other states. For example, queensland and western australia, they are covid free and theyre not very happy about Freedom Of Movement when its not 100 vaccination, so chances are there Is going to be Freedom Of Movement within New South Wales not so much interstate travel.
