Welcome to our viewers on pbs in america and around the globe. A man alleged to be the sole surviving gunman from the islamist gang which murdered 130 people in paris six years ago has told a court he is a fighter for the islamic state group. Salah abdeslam is one of 20 defendants in what is the biggest Terror Trial in modern french history. The prosecution says they were all involved in the shootings and bombings of november 2015, which targeted locations including bars, restaurants and the bataclan concert hall. From paris, our Correspondent Lucy Williamson reports. The sirens sounded again in Paris Today for the men accused of terrorising this city six years ago. Sounds that once accompanied that fear and panic, now accompanying the defendants on their way to justice. It was a night when security felt uncertain, when no one in paris knew where to run. As islamist gunmen targeted bars, restaurants, the football stadium, the bataclan concert hall. Explosion Salah Abdeslam, the only suspected attacker to survive that night, is facing the most serious charges. 19 others are accused of involvement, including mohamed abrini, also wanted by belgian prosecutors in connection with the attacks in brussels. Today, a message from abdeslam. As the trial opened, the judge asked for his profession. Fighter with the islamic state, he replied. This case includes almost 2000 civil plaintiffs, many of whom have opted not to testify. Translation the suffering is unspeakable. It is inexpressible, but they expect tough justice. The acts these defendants are accused of are particularly monstrous. The trial is being held in a specially built chamber inside the old Courts Ofjustice to fit its Scale And Security demands. This trial is the antidote to the Chaos And Panic of that night six years ago, the moment when the French State Reasserts control and turns national trauma into national history. Josephs Wife Armelle died in the bataclan that night. They had gone out to celebrate the launch of the Riverboat Company he now runs alone. How does he feel about looking Salah Abdeslam in the eyes . Translation to me, he is nonexistent, he is just a face. I have seen the attackers myself that night at the bataclan. When they were shooting at us, they shot at us twice. The first time, we were able to escape. The second time, no. Joseph told me he was afraid of coming here today. Fear is something he knows about. Justice is the antidote he needs. Lucy williamson, bbc news, paris. Afghanistans former president , Ashraf Ghani, has apologised to the afghan people and issued a statement explaining why he fled his country when the taliban took over last month. In a twitter post, mr ghani said he left afghanistan to avoid further bloodshed in the streets. Meanwhile, there are growing concerns about whether international aid will keep flowing into the country. The taliban has said that the international community should abide by its commitment to provide financial assistance to afghanistan. But many nations are hesitant to provide Help Or Recognition to the taliban government after they announced their new leadership on tuesday. Heres us Secretary State Antony blinken speaking during a visit to germany. Despite professing that a new government would be inclusive, the announced list of names consists exclusively of individuals who are members of the taliban or their close associates, and no women. Were also concerned by the affiliations and Track Records of some of those individuals. We understand the taliban has presented this as a caretaker cabinet. We willjudge it and them by its actions. Our chief international Correspondent Lyse Doucet is In Kabul. I have to say that on the streets today, the reaction to the protest has intensified. There was greater violence and foreign were arrested, afghan journalists also. Women protested, expressing their criticism of the government announcement, the Caretaker Government. The taliban are getting on with the business of government. New ministers have been told to go to their offices to meet people that will be working with them. We see humanitarian chiefs coming to the country this Week Martin griffiths of the un. Also the president of the international committee, who we met here In Kabul when he visited one of the icrc s most important and hopeful projects, and that is a prosthetic Rehabilitation Centre In Kabul. We never have to forget that afghanistan is probably the country with the most people disabled worldwide. A 4 5 of the population lives with disability. This is a huge number. Here is really the origin, and at the same time, the most hopeful part of what a humanitarian organisation can do. You speak about hope, but you arrive in afghanistan, where its starting again. Taliban leadership, and many are worried if not fearful. Many afghans say they willjudge the taliban by their actions, not their statements. What will be the first actions you will ask of them . In many respects, its the continuation of what we have been able to do in the past. We will have seen that in our programmes, women, girls and men are working alongside. But we have developed social activities in our physical rehabilitation, centre, which are inclusive for men and women. We have, ithink, in the past found the balance between respecting local traditions and local values and respect also and give perspectives to rights and to equality which the international community is asking for. It could be even more harmful to let drop the bridges of conversations that we have been able to establish and which im nevertheless hopeful we can continue to establish. Peter, the president of the international committee of the red cross, emphasising what so many leaders are saying they have to find a way to work with the new taliban leadership. So both sides understand each other. Tens of millions of afghans desperately need some kind of humanitarian assistance. These are the challenges as a new Caretaker Government takes office here in afghanistan. The bbc s Lyse Doucet In Kabul. Lets get some of the days other news. William B Gould was the first ever black Law Professor at Stanford University in california, and has pieced together the diaries of his Great Grandfather a literate, educated slave who fled to freedom in 1862 and joined the Us Navy to fight the civil war. Thanks forjoining us on bbc news. I will come to your personal involvement in a moment. But why was the day such an important moment, do you think, for america . It such an important moment, do you think, for america . You think, for america . It was important you think, for america . It was important because you think, for america . It was important because the important because the confederacy and the confederate statues that exist throughout the united states, particularly in the south, represent something which is antithetical to the idea of Equality And Protection of all people in the united states, and it highlights the hypocrisy that has continued to prevail on the Race Issue in the united states. ,. , states. Not all black americans and black rights states. Not all black americans and black rights advocates and black rights advocates would agree. I am thinking about Marcus Bradford for example, the artist, who believes that this is part of american history and actually, what you do need to starve plaques and notices on these monuments just explaining the role of these people, that they played. I role of these people, that they la ed. ~. Role of these people, that they. La ed, ~. ,. , role of these people, that they la ed. ~. ,. , played. I think that we have to have something played. I think that we have to have something different, played. I think that we have to i have something different, much more than that. What we have to do is replace it with something that shows the struggles of black people, who fought as William B gold did, frederick douglass, and many others throughout the south, against this oppressive system. You see, these statues were designed to promote the oppressive system, to justify and explain it, and we need something to replace that. We dont want to eliminate or obscure the fact that we played this role, and someone could obscure the fact that, but we have to do put a focus upon the people who fought against the evil system, which existed here, and the consequences of that system here in the united states today. fix, that system here in the united states today. States today. A lot of these statues. States today. A lot of these statues. I states today. A lot of these statues, i think states today. A lot of these statues, i think one states today. A lot of these | statues, i think one remains states today. A lot of these. Statues, i think one remains to general ap hill, because he was buried up right beneath it and they have got to sort out where they have got to sort out where they want to put his body, but these statues were put up several decades after The End of the civil war, and are you saying that this is a reminder of the generationaL Slavery that so many people feel to this day, as you do, obviously, through your Great Grandfather. These statues were put up about 3040 these statues were put up about 30 110 years after The End of the civil war, to justify the so called lost cause, to try to explain it, to paper over the fact that it was designed to preserve slavery, to talk in the language of states rights, and to say that the confederacy had not really pursued an evil cause, and they began to be more popular in the south in the 1890s, and continued in this century, and had a revival when we had the civil Rights Movement in the early 1950s. Stripped away, it certainly stands for racism. It shouldnt be simply stripped away. We should focus upon those people who struggled for the good things the united states, like john lewis, around the voting Rights Act of 1965. Rights act of 1965. Your greatgrandfather Rights Act of 1965. Your greatgrandfather escaped, just Great Grandfather escaped, just in a nutshell explain what he managed to do. He in a nutshell explain what he managed to do. In a nutshell explain what he managed to do. He escaped from Slave B managed to do. He escaped from slavery by getting managed to do. He escaped from slavery by getting on managed to do. He escaped from slavery by getting on about managed to do. He escaped from slavery by getting on about and L Slavery by getting on about and during the uss cambridge, fighting with our navy, uncle samuel, as he called it, fought for the cause as he called in his diary, of equality. He spoke of the invincible land, and he said we must not at The End of the War Shout for fear of disturbing the glorious sleep of the many who have fallen, martyrs to the cause of right and equality. That is what William B gould was about and that is what so many others who have not been heard from, that have been obscured by these statues, stood for. The latest william these statues, stood for. The latest William B these statues, stood for. The latest William B gould, thank you very much indeed for talking to us here on bbc news. Thank you very much. Frances biggest ever Terrorism Trial is under way. The only surviving assailant from the deadly 2015 Paris Terror attacks claims he is a soldier of the islamic state group. And Ashraf Ghani apologises to the afghan people. The former president says he fled the country to avoid more bloodshed. The united states top covid adviser, dr antony fauci, has said a third dose of the Pfizer Coronavirus Vaccine should no longer be seen as a booster but rather as part of the original dosing plan. It comes after tedros ghebreyesus, Director General of the world health organization, called on wednesday for rich countries to avoid giving out extra covid jabs until The End of the year, pointing to the millions worldwide who have yet to receive a single dose. So why is this proving so controversial . With me is our reporter mark lobel. Who is not happy. He wants the Booster Dose is delayed until The End of the year so that each country in the world can reach 40 of its population with vaccinations. The who does not like this third, boosted those, the Emergency Programme of health said describing the boost that there is that it was like giving extra Life Jackets to people who already have Life Jackets while leaving other people to drown without a single life jacket. The head of the who reiterating this delay that he wants to see. Lets have a listen. We do not want to see widespread use of boosters for healthy people who are fully vaccinated. We dont want any more promises. We just want the vaccines. He is saying this now because countries like the Uk Arm weighing up whether to move ahead with this third dose. The who reasoning is that with two versus you get enough protection from serious illness. It might go down a few percentage points from maybe 90 down to the mid 80s and protection, but he is saying that you have 0 if you are unvaccinated so the stress should be on that, but the big but is that there are many campaigns under way. Lets have a look at these mass vaccination campaigns, these Booster Campaigns already exist in israel, for those 12 and older, in hungary, the first in europe, it is imminent in america, and canada, france and germany have Booster Programmes under way, and all of those countries have ignored advice for there to be a delay in Booster Programmes until The End of september so the question is whether other countries will listen now. find countries will listen now. And there is this countries will listen now. And there is this large countries will listen now. And there is this large disparity, isnt there, between the richer countries, which have taken the bulk of the supply of the vaccinations. It bulk of the supply of the vaccinations. Bulk of the supply of the vaccinations. ,. ,. , vaccinations. It is enormous, 5. 5 vaccinations. It is enormous, 55 Billion vaccinations. It is enormous, 5. 5 Billion doses vaccinations. It is enormous, 5. 5 Billion doses of vaccinations. It is enormous, 5. 5 Billion doses of the 5. 5 Billion doses of the vaccine have gone out, which is tremendous, but 80 of those have gone to hire and middle income countries, and it is hard economics at play, those countries paid for the vaccines whether they work to not and they have now got them but the who says no one is safe until everybody is safe, they are targets, and countries need to have 10 of the population vaccinated by The End of this month. 40 by The End of the year, 70 by the middle of next year. Lets find out how that is going and fun find might hearfrom the who is going and fun find might hear from the who Director General again. Almost 90 of high income countries have now reached the 10 target, and more than 70 have reached the 40 target. Not a single low Income Country has reached either target. It isa it is a seriously bad situation when you look at it like that. Supply issues are part of the problem. Covax, the scheme to supply the vaccines to those in bosnia, has downgraded expectations by a the expected 2 Billion doses to spread around the world, they will now get 1. 4 billion. There are unilateral donations of faxes, china is leading the way with its new vaccine going to many countries, america supplied 140 Million and there is the exciting prospect of 500 Million pfizer doses which president biden announced at the g7 but i was speaking to one Vaccines Supplier was concerned, he had been approached by a charity, and they were wondering how, with 91 low income countries to get you but only a dozen able to handle the fires of vaccine how they would do this, and there are geopolitical reasons too, many countries want to give to ukraine, it is inundated, you can go to pharmacies there and choose your vaccine whilst countries like the central african republic, the democratic republic of the congo, they do not have that luxury. The worlds biggest industrial complex to extract Carbon Dioxide from the air has opened in iceland. It showcases a developing technology considered by some to be an important tool in the fight against climate change. The plant will remove 4,000 tonnes of co2 every year. But as David Campanale now reports, sceptics say this is a tiny percentage of the Carbon Dioxide that is generated by the burning of fossil fuels. Voiceover Climeworks Orca is the first plant ever in commercial operations for i direct Air Capture and storage. It starts serving i customers today. The futuristic vision of how to save the planet from runaway climate change, or a futile expense that distracts from the urgency of Slashing Co2 Emissions . In 2017, we celebrated a pioneering moment. | in a promotional video, swiss Start Up Climeworks announced the opening of the largest direct Air Capture and Storage Plant in existence, in a partnership with icelandic company carbfix. Powered by renewable geothermal energy from nearby, the plant consists of four units, each made up of two metal boxes. These suck Carbon Dioxide directly from the air, mixes it with water and then sends the product deep underground, where it gradually turns into rock. Storing Carbon Underground can be done at a massive scale, and it is really, really reliable to store that Carbon Underground two, three, four km underground, where it can stay for millions of years and be safely and securely monitored so we know exactly where it is. Our plant captures c02 by Drawing Air Into its. Collectors with a fan. Direct Air Capture is one of the few technologies extracting Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere. Its supporters say its vital to limit global warming, blamed for causing more heatwaves, wildfires, floods and rising sea levels. But sceptics point out that the Climate Crisis is worsening because of the relentless burning of fossil fuels, and its these that need to be cut. Last year, global Co2 Emissions totalled 31. 5 Billion tonnes, according to the international energy agency. This plant will remove just 4000 tonnes of that in a year, the equivalent ofjust 800 cars. Its so far been a completely failed technological solution. There are much better solutions out there solar panels, wind turbines, the emerging industry of green hydrogen. This is a kind of very, very high end solution. We prepare the c02 for the storage process. I direct Air Capture is at the Cutting Edge of climate technology, but due to their cost, there are only 15 such plants worldwide. Unless scaled up at speed, these wont take away from what scientists say is the imperative of keeping 80 of Carbon Reserves in the ground. David campanale, bbc news. The head of brazils supreme court, luiz fux, has accused President Jair Bolsonaro of attacking democracy by encouraging people to defy the rulings of the court. Mr fuxs comments came a day after Mr Bolsonaro told supporters at an Independence Day Parade that he would not obey the decisions of one of the courtsjudges. Translation the supreme court will not tolerate threats to the authority of its decisions. If there is contempt towards judicial decisions from those who hold power, this Standing Represents an attack on democracy. It constitutes criminal responsibility, to be analysed by the national congress. I and finally a painstaking operation has taken place to remove part of a driveway struck by a meteorite. The meteorite came down in the English Town of winchcombe in february. The section of the driveway dented by the Space Rock has now been removed in a lengthy process so that it can be displayed in its full glory at the natural History Museum in london. The museum hopes the exhibit will inspire visiting children to take a keen interest in what falls on their driveway. You can reach me on twitter im bbctimwillcox. Hello there. Our short spell of hot weather is coming to an end now. This picture was taken earlier in the night in sussex. This picture was taken during the day on wednesday in the Scottish Borders where temperatures reached 29 celsius, making it the hottest September Day in scotland since 1906. We had temperatures widely 29 celsius in england, into parts of wales as well. Top temperature was recorded at Heathrow Airport 30 celsius. Its very warm overnight as well. These are the temperatures by morning this band of heavy and thundery rain continues to move northwards, clearing away quickly from east anglia, moving across northern england. Those downpours ease off for a while as they head into scotland. But, as you can see elsewhere for western areas, those showers break out again more widely, threatening some localised flooding with some thundery downpours. Not as many showers for some Eastern Parts of england, temperatures here making 24 25 celsius warm for the time of year, but not as hot, of course, as it has been just recently. Those heavy showers, always going to be fewer towards the southeast as we head into the evening, but a few continuing to crack away elsewhere into the evening. As we head into friday as well, theres more showers to come. The reason the weather is changing and temperatures are dropping is low pressure drifting up from the southwest, bringing all these downpours as well. So a limited amount of sunshine again on friday, perhaps not quite as many showers or quite as widespread, but still the threat of some thundery ones, bringing localised flooding. And weve got temperatures typically on Friday Afternoon at around 20 21 celsius not too bad really for this time of year, but quite a change, of course. Heading into the weekend, theres still the potential for some more rain to be affecting northernmost parts of scotland. Elsewhere, fewer showers, lighter showers, more places will be dry. Not promising much in the way of sunshine, mind you, and weve got temperatures around 20 21 celsius. So as we head into the weekend, the low pressure thats been bringing the downpours will be moving away. Slightly higher pressure leaves us almost in no mans land, but it does look like it will be turning drier. But before then, weve got temperatures dropping as those downpours arrive. Then, by the weekend, much drier, probably a lot of cloud, and dont expect the heat to return.
