The Semiconductor Giant Intel has announced it will set up dedicated capacity to make Computer Chips for the Car Industry at its existing foundry in ireland. Intel will invest up to 80 Billion euro in European Production over the next decade. Earlier this year, intels Chief Executive predicted the situation would get worse before it got better. Our correspondent Theo Leggett caught up Pat Gelsinger, who has been visiting the international Mobility Show in munich, and asked him if those fears had been borne out . Exactly as we predicted, the worst is the second half of the year, 03, 04. Next year it will get incrementally better each quarter but we think it will continue into 2023. It takes that long to get more capacity in place, just designs, rebuild Supply Change. It in place, just designs, rebuild Supply Change Supply Change. It is fair to sa it Supply Change. It is fair to say it will Supply Change. It is fair to say it will be Supply Change. It is fair to say it will be a Supply Change. It is fair to say it will be a rough Supply Change. It is fair to say it will be a rough ride. Intel has offered to help by ramping up production, what about you . Here, we are announcing our Foundry Services out of ireland, essentially manufactured in europe for europe, and we are excited about making intel at 16 available. We will also announce other services available, but the big news is building a new maker fab, which is a very exciting project, it will re establish this geographically balanced supply chain. Europe used to be 44 of worldwide semiconductors, now it is 9 . The decline has been as we move to asia. This is vital, because you predict a massive increase in the value of Computer Chips used in cars over the next few years . Yes, if you look at today, Premium Segment cars, about 4 of the billable materials are semiconductors. Our estimates are that by 2030, this will go to 20 . You think we have an importance Of Semiconductors and Cars Today . Importance Of Semiconductors and Cars Today . You aint seen nothin and Cars Today . You aint seen nothing yet and Cars Today . You aint seen nothing yet. Then and Cars Today . You aint seen nothing yet. Then we and Cars Today . You aint seen nothing yet. Then we have nothing yet. Then we have automated technologies that you are here to talk about. I gather you are planning to have a robotic taxi On The Road here in germany by next year . Yes, we are excited because munich has been, you know, every city needs to look at regulatory requirements for autonomous capabilities. Munich has been very advanced. We are excited to announce their autonomous vehicle service capability, and we will work with them, so we can make those services available next year. We are quite thrilled. When will all of this become commonplace, things like robo taxis, the automated minibus behind you. Robotaxis, the automated minibus behind you. Robotaxis, the automated minibus behind you. When will this be every minibus behind you. When will this be every day . Minibus behind you. When will this be every day . I minibus behind you. When will this be every day . I think minibus behind you. When will this be every day . I think we l this be every day . I think we are starting to see these services from 2022, emerging in 2023, different markets are experimenting with them. We think the benefits, the efficiency, the safety that comes associated, it will really start to capture and a 2024, 2025, seeing broad deployment across the industry. We are starting to see an industry that has been talked about in the last five years really starting to materialise as both the regulatory, the technologies, we are heading the Price Point so we can really come forward into the marketplace. Marketplace. That is Pat Gelsinger marketplace. That is Pat Gelsinger from marketplace. That is Pat Gelsinger from intel. The world wide shortage of microchips is now also having a major impact on the Tech Sector and looks set to impact mobile phones, tablets and gadgets. And as just we heard it could last into 2023. On top of that, concern is rising that this Christmas Tech gadgets may not only be more expensive, but also in short supply. Zach emmanuel is Technology Analyst at mintel. Good Morning, what are you hearing about this . Yes, as we just heard there, there has been a Semiconductor Shortage Meaning that it is much more difficult for manufacturers like apple, xbox, sony, playstation, for them to get their products are to consumers. In terms of apple specifically, it is mainly there and ipad range over the summer period, and then well see more of that problem around this quarter we are in now. Going towards christmas, the main problem will be the Gaming Sector because even though the current generation consoles, the new xbox and playstation have been available since last year, it is difficult to find stock, so the problem will be big able to buy those products this christmas. The big able to buy those products this christmas. This christmas. The global Cha Ter this christmas. The global Chapter Shortage this christmas. The global Chapter Shortage has this christmas. The global. Chapter shortage has meant this christmas. The global Chapter Shortage has meant that suppliers like tsmc are charging more for their components, so what will the likes of apple, sony and others do . Will they pass it the customer will be just suck it up customer will be just suck it up and take the loss . It is definitely up and take the loss . It is definitely possible up and take the loss . It 3 definitely possible looking towards next year. I think for this christmas, it might be a bit soon. The providers for the chips for apple, it is rumoured they will increase their prices starting from december, mainly going towards next year, so it is possible that apple will then increase the price of an iphone, but we are looking towards next year for that. In terms of lack of supply, there is always a rush at this time of year to get new gadgets. I am hearing just anecdotally of people who are buying Christmas Gifts now in anticipation of there being a lack of things available in the Run Up to christmas itself. Available in the runup to christmas itself. Available in the runup to christmas itself. Yes, because we dont really christmas itself. Yes, because we dont really know christmas itself. Yes, because we dont really know for christmas itself. Yes, because we dont really know for sure i we dont really know for sure whether they will be another lockdown this year, which would Spike Demand even higher, so thatis Spike Demand even higher, so that is traditionally normally a time where people buy products anyway, and so, yes, i can see that people will want to buy these products now because it may be a problem later on down the line, the christmas period. For smartphones, because there is such a great Product Variety available, if you cant buy, for example, one version, there are plenty of other products from the manufacturers, whereas when it is gaming, there are only specific types, sony, xbox. ~ ~ ,. , only specific types, sony, xbox. ~ ~ ,. , only specific types, sony, xbox. ~ ~ ,. ,. , xbox. We will keep an eye on that, thank xbox. We will keep an eye on that, thank you, xbox. We will keep an eye on that, thank you, zach xbox. We will keep an eye on i that, thank you, Zach Emmanuel from mintel. Lets return to the Car Industry. Indias Car Industry is making a healthy recovery from the pandemic downturn. In august salesjumped about 15 compared to the same time last year. Dealers have, however, warned that severe supply issues will impact business in one of the worlds biggest automobile markets. Our India Business Reporter Nikhil Inamdar is following this for us. Nikhil what kind of challenges are Car Makers facing . Is it the same issue at play . Absolutely, the federation of Automobile Dealers said that the last year, demand is a major issue during a pandemic. However, this year, it has Supply Side issues that are crippling the industry. They say they have want of semiconductor Shortages Way Backin Semiconductor Shortages way back in January Semiconductor shortages way back injanuary 2021, but it has now become a full blown crisis with no light at the end of the tunnel. These are their words. They have also want of things such as chip unavailability, Container Shortages as well as Metal Prices going up, being some of the big headwinds in the Auto Sector being faced. This is why we believe that the festive season here in india, kicking off, it could be lacklustre because although they would be demand, Inventory Levels at dealerships are at their lowest end of this financial year. That could lead to automakers not being able to service the demand. Major companies like suzuki have guarded that at about 60 of production could be off and that their factories. As far as the numbers are concerned, we have seen a growth of 15 opposed to the same period last year, but if you compare to pre pandemic levels, august, 2019, we are still 15 of those levels, so some recovery is seen but we not back to pre pandemic levels. Not back to pre pandemic levels. ~ not back to pre pandemic levels. , ~ ,. , ~ levels. Thank you, Nikhil Inamdar levels. Thank you, Nikhil Inamdar for levels. Thank you, Nikhil Inamdar for that levels. Thank you, Nikhil Inamdar for that story. I theranos isnt a household name, but the trial of its founder is sending sparks through Silicon Valley. Opening statements in the trial of the Blood Testing Start Ups Founder Elizabeth Holmes will begin later today. Court documents suggest holmes will use the defence of domestic abuse, making this trial as dramatic as the Firms Collapse in 2018. James clayton has been following the saga. This trial has been the talk of san francisco, the talk of Silicon Valley for years, and it is finally happening. It is all about one woman, matt to, seen as the darling of Silicon Valley back in the mid 2000. Elizabeth holmes. She founded the company at the age of 19 and it went on to be valued at over 10 Billion thatis valued at over 10 Billion that is £7 billion. It was all based on an idea that she came up based on an idea that she came up with at stanford, which was that she could create a device that she could create a device that could diagnose hundreds and hundreds of illnesses just using a couple of drops of blood. The idea was really lauded by the great and the good of american society. We had Henry Kissinger who was investing, george schultz, former secretary of state, Joe Biden who said very warm words about the company, as did bill clinton, howeverthe about the company, as did bill clinton, however the idea itself was based on fantasy science. The technology didnt actually work. It took years and years for that to unfold. Eventually, a Wall Street Journal investigation, using some of the whistleblowers who work for the company, uncovered the truth. The actual company was wound down in 2017, and it has taken for two years to get to this point where were sitting down for a full audit trail. Some people who followed case may assume that Elizabeth Holmes will be found guilty, after all, she was chief Executive And Founder of the company, and wedge technology simply didnt exist, but burden of proof is very high on cases of proof is very high on cases of fraud. She will be using a defence that one of the people she brought in to run the company was also her lover, and she will be saying that he exercised coercive control over her. It is going to be a very salacious trial, a very interesting trail, but the idea that she is nailed down to be found guilty is certainly not the case. Judges say this will take between two and four months, so perhaps we will get a verdict before christmas. We shall see, that was james clayton. Lets get some of the days other news. Japans economy grew faster than the original estimate in the April Tojune quarter, helped by solid capital expenditure. Lets bring you an update on bitcoin, because the cryptocurrency crashed to its lowest value in nearly a month, on the exact same day that El Salvador adopted it as legal tender. It fell from 52,000 to under 43,000 following some technical glitches in El Salvador. But it did recover some of those losses shortly afterwards. Stay with us on bbc news, still to come and Up In Smoke japanese Bank Nomura tells its staff even when working from Home Cigarette breaks are against their rules. The taliban have announced a new government in afghanistan, they knew Prime Minister is on they knew Prime Minister is on the un terrorism sanctions list. The trial begins of those accused involved with the paris attacks, 2015. 130 people were killed, hundreds were injured. British mps will vote later today on whether to raise national insurance to fund health and social care, a day after Boris Johnson announced the manifesto breaking move. The Prime Minister says it will raise £12bn a year which will be used to tackle the Health Backlog caused by the Covid Pandemic and boost social care. But while the increase in national insurance contributions grabbed all the headlines another Tax Rise is irking investors an increase in the tax on dividends. Joining me now is swetha ramachandran, investment manager, gam investments. Good Morning. Talk through how the tax on dividends will work. The additional revenue of 12pm pounds needed to be raised through the measures announced yesterday are about 600 Million that needs to be diverted to Dividend Tax. The idea is to apportion the burden among the working age employees, bearing a brunt of the contributions, but also those Receiving Income from the higher and of the spectrum. It will have the Unintended Consequence of increasing the Tax Burden on the Self Employed who primarily pay a health dividends. We will persevere, we seem to have an Audio Issue but it isnt so bad that we cant hear what you are saying, we will persevere, but to say that the argument with the Dividend Tax is two at pharaoh, as you just said, in terms of sharing the burden among everyone in the country, as opposed to just employers and workers . You cannot hear me. Apologies then maybe we can carry on that conversation later. Just to say as you may be well aware because i have been reading about this this Morning, we have huge analysis made by the Government Insurance in regard to national insurance. Beginning in April 2022 and also the increase of dividends, and all that sort of thing, all there to read at your pleasure. Leanne cahill is the ceo of british company bravissimo, which makes lingerie for women who wear larger cup sizes, but in fact she learned her most valuable business lesson, it turns out, from a disaster with some cakes earlier on in her career in retail. Shes been sharing her ceo secrets with us. I was once taught a very valuable lesson by a pile of easter cakes. Right at the beginning of my career, i was a trainee at a retail high street store, training to be a manager and the content into the Food Hall one easter and did lots of learning and was ready to put into practice, head full of it so i set about changing the layout and having a look at how much stock we had for easter. I was so convinced i was going to wow our customers with the customer so i ordered in a huge quantity of easter cakes. The thing is with retail, the results are so visible, it is a very tangible business, particularly when its in the form of a huge pile of unsold cake it was a massive lesson. I may have been the one wearing the Managers Suit on the day but i was the least experienced person in the whole team and if i had just thought to speak to the people who were working with the customers every day, they had all of the answers. Im still benefiting from that mistake over 20 years later. I love that we have more of those online as well. Do employers have a duty of care for staff Working From Home and how far should that Care Reach . The japanese Brokerage Firm Nomura last week hours, even when they are Working From Home. The policy will come into effect from october and nomura will close all smoking rooms by december end. Nomura says staff will be expected to follow the rules but there wont be formal monitoring. Other workplaces like softbank have banned smoking on company time. Joining me now is Professor Sir Cary cooper, professor of organizational Psychology Health at manchester business school, university of manchester. 0f of course employers have a duty of care to staff, no matter where they are, the home or the office or somewhere else but to what extent does it go that far that they can say you cannot have Time Out to smoke when you are Working From Home . If have Time Out to smoke when you are Working From Home . Are Working From Home . If you think about are Working From Home . If you think about it, are Working From Home . If you think about it, in are Working From Home . If you think about it, in an are Working From Home . If you think about it, in an office think about it, in an office environment, you can do that because there is something called secondary or passive smoking. In other words, called secondary or passive smoking. In otherwords, and the good old days when it used to smoke in the office, the good old bad days, you could cause other People Health problems because of your smoking and that is why it was banned because the employer does have a duty of care on the health of employees. We are now in a Grey Area. Should they be able to do that in the home in the context of the home . Because we will have the Hybrid Model that people who can, will be working, probably substantially from home, coming in maybe two days a week, three days a week, depending on the circumstances, so, does an employer have the right because it not affecting any other employees who are doing that, said do you have the right to say that during working hours Working From Home you cannot smoke . Now you could perhaps understand that if it was about clients, because you will be on the mac or some other social platform and we dont like you smoking when you are in a Team Meeting or whatever zoom, but we are in a Problem Area here. I think its an extremely Grey Area and i will bet you that there will be legal challenges on this. Im that there will be legal challenges on this. Im sure there will challenges on this. Im sure there will be, challenges on this. Im sure there will be, sorry challenges on this. Im sure there will be, sorry to there will be, sorry to interject, but i do agree with you, next is extremely difficult to say what extent a company can follow through on this because i am not a smoker but i know several people who are and for them, they would argue, actually, my mental Well Being, if im at home to be able to go outside my garden and have a break and have a smoke, that is really important. Smoke, that is really imortant. , ,. , important. Yes, its about autonomy important. Yes, its about autonomy and important. Yes, its about autonomy and control, i important. Yes, its about i autonomy and control, isnt important. Yes, its about autonomy and control, isnt it . Before covid, people wanted to work much more flexibly, and Part Office and it gave them freedom and the freedom entails them for example during a break at home, after all of these zoom called, is to go out and have a cigarette or whatever that is their freedom. So i think we will have a real Problem Area. I dont know of any other company doing this, in terms of people Working From Home because the whole purpose of this is to give them the autonomy that they have been asking for for a long autonomy that they have been asking forfor a long time, in terms of managing their Home And Work life. And work life. Author as well, its a really and work life. Author as well, its a really tricky and work life. Author as well, its a really tricky Area And Work life. Author as well, its a really tricky area for its a really tricky area for those running businesses, to what extent they can get involved in the health and Well Being of their staff when it is not wanted, if that makes sense, because it may not be necessarily smoking, it may be other habits that impede Someones Health and Well Being. Someones health and wellbeing. Someones health and wellbeing. Yes, its very interesting wellbeing. Yes, its very interesting that wellbeing. Yes, its very interesting that many wellbeing. Yes, its very interesting that many american companies now self insure employees, in other words, instead of paying for employer health, private health plans, they actually ensure they are healthy, their employees and they may say we do not what is making very much because we are ultimately paying your medical bills. But even there, i think it is problematic from a legal point of view. I dont know, the only people benefiting from this will be the lawyers i think, really, you need people to have the autonomy, if they decide on the family decided that that is ok for one member of my family to be smoking, then i would have thought it is their right to do that but its interesting, the law has said they would not monitor it. They would not monitor it. The company has said they would not monitor it. They will not be policing it. Good to talk to you and thanks for your time so early in the Morning. You and thanks for your time so early in the Morning. Thank you for our early in the Morning. Thank you for your time early in the Morning. Thank you for your time as early in the Morning. Thank you for your time as well. Early in the Morning. Thank you for your time as well. I early in the Morning. Thank you for your time as well. I do for your time as well. I do hope you have a lovely day. I will see you soon. Very quiet on the Weather Front out there right now and quite warm too, after a hot tuesday for some of us. Heres a reminder of the temperatures we had on tuesday in a selection of places. These are the hotspots up to 31 degrees in one or two spots in wales, close to 30 in many other areas, for example, across the midlands. And wednesday is going to be another hot one, with tons of sunshine on the way. But we are starting to see a breakdown of this sunny weather in the far southwest of the uk. Theres just the possibility of some showers early in the Morning in cornwall, maybe even the Odd Crack of thunder. But for many of us, its sunshine right from The Word Go and warm 17 degrees in the Morning. Now, the reason the weathers going to be changing over the next 24 hours or so is this low pressure which is approaching us. In fact, you can see itjust on the bottom of the screen there. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to creep, gently creep into southwestern parts of england and wales. They wont make much progress during the course of wednesday. In fact, by the afternoon, theyre just into southern wales, just across the west country, maybe a shower possible in northern ireland. But look at the weather across the rest of the uk hot and sunny. I wouldnt be surprised if temperatures hit 30 degrees once again on wednesday. Now, even through the evening on wednesday, you can see these showers just about moving a bit further north into the midlands, into central, southern england, many of us remaining dry. But a risk of downpours certainly possible, and that risk will continue into thursday because this low pressure will come closer. Its going to park itself over us. The winds will be light in the centre of this low pressure, and that means that these showers circling the low will be slow moving, so the possibility of long lasting downpours and even some Flash Flooding across parts of wales and england. Some eastern areas may escape the worst of the showers. And here, still a little bit of warmth left, maybe 24 in hull, 25 in norwich, but out towards the west, were talking about temperatures maybe not even making 20 celsius on thursday. So the hot spell will come to an end on thursday for all of us. And you can see in the outlook the temperatures come the weekend will be barely making 20 degrees across many parts of the uk. Thats it from me. Bye bye. Good Morning, welcome to Breakfast Withjon kay and louise minchin. Our headlines today. A Tax Rise to fix social care. Mps will vote later on plans for a £36 billion injection for health services. Todayis today is the first step in introducing these massive reforms which will affect virtually everyone. The big Question Hanging over them is, will they work . Whos paying . And how much . I look at what it means for you, yourfamily, and your business. More than 1000 migrants have crossed the channel by boat in the past two days
