A huge story from the Music World because abbott has announced a new album for the first time in A0 years, and they say they will provide perform on stage as holograms. At least 15 people are believed to have died, as the remnants of Storm Ida brought Flash Flooding and tornadoes to north eastern america, including the state of New York, where a State Of Emergency has been declared. Newjersey and new jersey and connecticut. President biden says its another reminder that the Climate Crisis has arrived. This destruction is everywhere, and its a matter of life and death, and were all in this together. This is one of the great challenges of our time. More than 35,000 people remain without power in New York state. Part of the reason for that is that the storm felled a number of trees. That took out power lines, and, as some residents found on thursday morning, cars, too. My cars crushed. I mean, its totalled. Its, er. A ten Tonne Tree just fell on my car. That was caused by the winds. However, it was the unprecedented amount of rain that fell, which caught the city most off guard. Streets in the boroughs of queens and brooklyn were turned into rivers. More than 170 milimetres of rain was recorded in Central Park on wednesday almost double the previous Daily Record which was set in 1927. Recorded rainfall at Newark Airport in newjersey was more than 200 milimetres nearly four times the record amount. This was the scene from terminal b. Hundreds of flights at the states airports have been cancelled. New york mayor, bill de blasio, says that hundreds of people had to be rescued. Heres what one man who was caught up in it. I cant go homejust right now, but, so, you know, were all going to come together and were going to figure out a solution. Games at the Us Open tennis had to be suspended, with Wind And Rain lashing the court during this night time game between Diego Schwartzman and kevin anderson. Heres one fan who was there. Bearin bear in mind one of the stadiums has a roof, but even that didnt keep things out. Here is one fan who was there. We started our journey we started ourjourney home from Flushing Meadows in queens back here to brooklyn, and got on ourfirst bass, and we are sort of making our way, and as we hit elms first, Queens Boulevard, we saw some Storm Drains that were kind of throwing water up, and at that point we called up we pulled Up To Queens Boulevard itself and it was like a river. It literally was torrential coming down from left to right, there were a number of cars that had been abandoned, owners try to get out. We spoke to one guy that had to climb out the window of his car as the waters were rising. George bailey also lives In The City this was his experience. There are Weather Alert services and whatnot, there are Weather Alert services and whatnot, and i was like its not like im whatnot, and i was like its not like im on whatnot, and i was like its not like im on the coastlines i wasnt really like im on the coastlines i wasnt really paying attention to them and then right in the middle of dinner hear gurgling, and the water is coming hear gurgling, and the water is coming up hear gurgling, and the water is coming up out of the Shower Drain on our bathroom, and i went to check the main our bathroom, and i went to check the main Water Line in the Utility Room the main Water Line in the Utility Room. To be clear, new York City is not the only place affected. New york, Newjersey And Connecticut. The storm also bought severe flooding to neighbouring pennsylvania. This is the state capital, philadelphia, where Rescue Operations are underway. There are reports that parts of the Skookil River rose more than three and a half feet in eight hours. We know thousands of people in the state are without power. If that wasnt bad enough, parts of pennsylvania and the state of maryland were also hit by tornadoes generated by ideye. Next we have to talk about some very, very big news indeed from the world of music, because. Abba have released new music for the first time in A0 years and announced a new album. Pretty much had to exaggerate how much abba have already achieved in their careers. Theyve got A Hard Act To Follow already sold over A00 million Album Sales since they first formed 50 years ago. But in 1982 they broke up and vowed never to return. They stuck to it for a long while but here we are in 2021 and abba has just released their first new music since then. Music what you think . It feels like i have had that loads of times, i have only heard it once or twice, they have definitely stuck to a familiar sound. Reunions Happen all the time think Led Zepellin and the Spice Girls in recent years. But until very recently abba were always considered among the least likely to come back. In 2008, Bjorn Ulvaeus said the four members would never play music together again. He told the Sunday Telegraph there is simply no motivation to regroup. Money is not a factor. We would like people to remember us as we were. Abba wont be touring themselves instead they have launched a hologram of the band that will take their place on stage. And we got a little example of what the new Abba Concert will look like. Music so a new album on the way, and a new holographic show to go with it. Heres Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Anderson on what its like to be back together. It isa it is a new tour. We havent been out there for A0 years. Ads, it is a new tour. We havent been out there for 40 years. It is a new tour. We havent been out there for 40 years. A new album, after 40 years out there for 40 years. And thats what they have done. Since breaking up in 1982, abba have continued to grow in popularity theres been musicals, films and cover bands all across the world continuing to bring the Bands Music to new generations. One of those groups is Bjorn Again the original abba tribute group, which started in australia in 1988 and has performed 5,300 shows in 72 countries. A phenomenon in its own right. Im joined now by Bjorn Again founder rod stephen. He is live in london. Thank you for joining us. I wonder what your emotions are today . Joining us. I wonder what your emotions are today . President Joe Biden has again blasted a new law in Texas Banning most abortions. Yesterday, the so called heartbeat act became law in texas making it illegal to terminate pregnancies after six weeks it also allows anyone to sue people that help women get an abortion. In a Statement Biden said the law was an unprecedented assault on women s constitutional rights. And that the administration will be looking at what steps the federal government can take to ensure that women in texas have access to safe and legal abortions. If there was never a time to do it, this is the time. I think it is very dangerous, and a scary time for women in texas, and women across america, with the incredibly restrictive law that went into Effect Yesterday in texas. I think texas has taken a step towards the same types of restrictions against women that the taliban are on the far end of the spectrum of, but it is a spectrum and texas took a step on it yesterday. The Us Supreme Court voted not to block the law late on wednesday. Groups against the law called on them to issue a last Minute Injuction to block the law, but the court voted against taking any action, 5 a. In explaining their decision, the majority 5justices wrote we cannot say that the applicants have met their burden to prevail in an injunction or stay application. Though, they stressed that this order is not based on any conclusion about the constitutionality of texass law. And in no way limits other procedurally proper challenges to the Texas Law. To explain that decisiOn And the opinions of the dissenting justices heres Professor Scott lucas at the university of birmingham. The five justices in the majority said look, we are not ruling on the merits of the law, were not saying whether or not in effect this Texas Law can be upheld and thus rollback a lot of the federal law in Roe Versus Wade. In other words, they cited that the plaintiffs who are the Abortion Providers had used incorrect procedure to ask for emergency relief. The four dissenting justices, including the chiefjustice roberts said look, look, youre burying your heads in the sand. Your citing a claim that procedure has not been followed properly to avoid dealing with the issue, grasping the nettle of what we have at stake here. The issue here in other words, has been deferred, kicked down the road. Theres been strong reaction from both supporters of the decisiOn And those against it. Womens Rights Groups have slammed the new law as a dramatic reversal of the Roe Versus Wade judgement in 1973 which legalised abortion across the united states. Heres Alexis Mcgilljohnson President of the organisation planned parenthood. Look, we are incredibly disappointed. Essentially, what Happened in texas is that they have turned the clock back 50 years. It is in incredibly dark day, and in not responding at this moment, the supreme court has effectively overruled Roe Versus Wade for women in texas. So huge disappointment for pro choice women and activists, but there were celebration amongst republicans in texas. This is the republican Texas Governor Greg abbott signing the new law alongside his republican colleagues from the State House and senate. One of the biggest criticisms of the law is its lack of exemptions for woman that fall pregnant as victims of rape or incest. Texas Legislator Senator Bryan Hughes is the author of the bill and he gave the bbc his argument for why no exemptions were provided. A rapist needs to be punished. Theres no question about that. We have strong laws in texas to punish rapists. We talked to women in those situations, we wouldnt punish the unborn child because of the horrible act done to the mother. That unborn child is a separate human being. That unborn child in her Mothers Womb is the most innocent and the most Helpless A Human could ever be and she deserves that protection. We believe and texans believe and i think we know in our hearts that when that heart is beating, that is a human life. That heartbeat is the universal sign of life. We have to protect those little babies. For more on what it means for both sides of the Abortion Debate in the us, heres our correspondent nomia iqbal. It isa it is a huge rollback for many people. Many human Rights Group saying this is going to push women to Crossing State Lines to get an abortion, it will affect those who are poor, minority women as well. A Public Inquiry has found blatant hypocrisy in the way major religious groups handle allegations of child abuse. The independent inquiry into child sexual abuse said dozens of religious organisations within christianity, 0rthodoxjudaism And Islam were morally failing children. The report follows similar inquries into the catholic and protestant faiths. This inquiry found that religious leaders discouraged the reporting of abuse to protect the reputations of their groups. Our home Affairs Correspondent Tom Symonds has the details. It is very difficult to form an identity and to be a whole person when you are on your own. This is sarah, born into the jehovahs witnesses. Into a family dominated by the church. Effectively, he was sexually abused by both your father and your mother . Yes. Yourfather, when you are much younger . Your mother, when you were a bit older . They had control over you, what was that like . I dont really have words to describe what that was like, honestly. The sense of Powerlessness And Hopelessness. Sarah is not her real name. She was taken into care, she settled by the sea for a new start, away from the witnesses. They teach everyone who is not a witness is part of satans world, satans system, as they call it. It makes you terrified to trust anyone outside of the organisatiOn And at the same time, terrified to trust anyone inside the organisation. It was very difficult. It is a pattern repeated across 38 religious groups investigated by this enquiry, which includes the anglican and catholic churches. The way that leaders are revered. The culture of community and not taking things outside the community, so dealing with everything internally, not making outside authorities aware, so they can be looked at in the wider sense of the causes can be tackled. Discouraging victims from reporting, even within the organisation. An example. The jehovahs witnesses have a policy that all Child Protection allegations have a policy that have to be reported to the police. But inside the church, they also follow a biblical scripture that says all allegations must be supported by two witnesses. It should have no place in response to child sexual abuse, which often Happens with no witnesses. The church says it is committed to protecting children and will consider this report. In the 0rthodoxjewish community, the enquiry heard about a concept of not snitching, as one witness put it, on a fellow jewish person to outsiders. But campaigners are concerned that this report does not hit religious organisations hard enough. They have to raise the bar for religious organisations and not give them leeway because they have religion on their side. Religion does not equal enough safeguarding. The report is short on a solution to all this, but that what those who suffered as children, including sarah, are now using their adult voices to demand. Ina in a couple of minutes we will look at a hugely important scientific study in bangladesh. It involved more than 300,000 people. It has found that facemasks do work at reducing the spread of covid 19. We will speak to one of the authors of that report. Also a reminder that we post videos from outside source on my twitter feed. I will see you in a couple of minutes. We saw mixed fortunes again with the amounts of sunshine across the uk. We did very well with the sunny skies for parts of england, scotland, Northern Ireland and also one or two places in the south of england. 0therwise one or two places in the south of england. Otherwise it stayed cloudy elsewhere and felt quite cool. 0ur Area of High Pressure still weather us into tonight and if anything will draw that cloud back of the North Sea into many areas. By The End of the night many places will be cloudy, a few clear spells, Western Scotland and one or two spells across our south. We have the blanket of cloud. Into the afternoon, friday, we should see some holes appearing in The Cloud, in the best of it, Parts Of Scotland, Northern Ireland may be Northern England and also across southern england, perhaps South Wales as well but elsewhere rather cloudy. Quite breezy again close to the North Sea coast and through the channel. It is here where the temperatures are quite disappointing, the mid to high teens, generally cool where we have The Cloud but warmer in the sunshine, Up To around 22 sources. Little change as we head into the start of the week and our area of High Pressure starts to push over towards the east. That will allow our airflow to come in from a more south easterly direction. Certainly a cloudy morning. Into the afternoon we should start to see increasing amounts of sunshine across the south but there is also a chance of some showers breaking out across southern and western areas into the afternoon, although most places should stay dry. Those temperatures again mid to high teens where we have The Cloud but warming up a bit across the south east, giving some sunny spells into the afternoon. Then to sunday, we see the area of High Pressure towards the east and low Pressure Move into the west. This Weather Front is likely to bring some wet weather to the North West of the during sunday. The larger study of its kind that found that facemask do reduce the spread of covid 19. Do reduce the it was done in bangladesh and could have huge implications for countries where the Vaccine Rollout has been slow. Its important to note that the study is waiting for Peer Review. But the researchers involved are unequivocal. Heres the lead author, quoted in the washington post. He says the results should basically end any scientific debate for the past year and a half, most scientists have backed the use of masks. But its hard to determine how much they help to curb transmission in the real world, where not everyone is masking, using the same quality of masks or wearing masks properly. This trial tackled that Challenge Head on by operating at massive scale. More than 3A0,000 people from 600 different villages took part. Participants were split into two groups. People in one group were encouraged in a range of different ways to use a face mask. The other Group Wasn t. But during the course of the study those who were randomised and encouraged to wear a mask were much more likely to wear a mask were much more likely to wear a mask. So it was 13 in our non Intervention Group and A2 in the masks. And then that group in turn got less covid. They got 9 less Covid Infections if they were in that group. If you look at people who got the surgical mask, they went down by 12 if you look at people who got surgical masks over the age of 50, they got 35 less covid 19. Because prior to this there was some concern that the evidence on a Population Level was entirely descriptive or observational. That is that people who wore masks clearly have less covid but people were worried that people who wore masks might also be adopting other behaviors. So its not clear whether the masks were really responsible. So by Doing A randomised controlled trial this is really the Gold Standard of evaluating health interventions.
