Pressure with us at the moment. Last night provisionally was the highest August Air pressure ever recorded in the uk. But stuck underneath that we have lots of Grey Cloud for most of us. And you can see from the Satellite And Radar that we have a lot of clout right across the uk. Some drizzle coming out of that cloud. The second picture from inverness shows a different story with clear skies across much of scotland. Blue skies and just a bit of fairweather cloud. That is the picture for much of scotland for the rest of today but over the next few days we keep that cloudy theme for most areas. Some drizzle around and a bit of sunshine around. Sunshine is across much of scotland, some sunny spells for Northern Ireland and North West England. But still a bit of a breeze down the East Coast for East Anglia and the south east. Temperatures in the mid teens but further west in the sunshine 23 degrees for the West Of Scotland for instance this afternoon. This Evening And Tonight cloud moving further west across scotland and Northern Ireland. Single figures in a few spots but most of us staying at around 11, 13 degrees overnight. Tomorrow more of the same with just subtle changes in the next few days. Still a bit of a breeze towards the East Temperature is 18, 19 degrees here but towards the North And West again you see most of the sunshine tomorrow. The High Pressure is staying with us as we head into friday and a lot of clout once again trapped underneath that descending air with high Pressure Overhead Cell another cloudy day on friday. A few in the cloud here and there. Still a bit of a breeze to the English Channel but not quite as breezy by the time we get to friday so temperatures around 1a, wrenching to 22 degrees. Into the weekend than in High Pressure is still with us but just tries to nudge away towards the east. Lower pressure trying to move on from the west but before it gets that it looks like the High Pressure once again wins out so plenty of dry weather heading towards the weekend and you may even notice those temperatures are starting to creep up. That is all from the Bbc News that one. Wejoin the bbc good afternoon. Its 1. 30pm and heres your latest sports news. Its tough, you know, to play in my first match, even though i had, you know, till tonight tonnes of experience playing in this court, for him it was a first one. Still you get nerves, you still, you know, you are feeling a little bit rusty at the beginning so, yeah, i mean, obviously im pleased with the way i finished the match but, again, it was not a fair battle so to see him on the court with his unfortunate injury. The England Captain who began the Year 9th in the charts jumps above new Zealands Kane Williamson ill have more for you in the next hour. I look forward to that one. Well be back with you later. Kevin, thank you very much. Gavin. With the crisis in afghanistan continuing to unfold, thousands are still attempting to get Safe Passage out of the country. The Uk Government has promised that up to 5,000 afghans can find refuge in the uk this year, with up to 20,000 in the long term. Earlier my colleague Annita Mcveigh spoke to a former worker at the British Embassy In Kabul arrived in the uk injuly to seek refuge with his family. We didnt use his real name and didnt show his face to protect his identity. We are happy and we are grateful to be here and we are getting along nicely. The only concern we still have is about the ones we have left behind, so we are seriously concerned about them and we hope they are going to be able to move. When it comes to the ones left behind, and also the ones who have worked with the uk in one way or another. Of course, and i know when you were chatting to my colleague in advance of this interview, you were saying that although you are here physically in the uk, mentally you are very much in afghanistan. What is your message to the Uk Government . What do you want the government to do now to help those people who want to leave but who are still in afghanistan . I think the government should practice, continue its useful and potentially fruitful dialogue with the taliban regarding Safe Passage, and also explore the possibilities of taking out the ones who deserve to be in third country, and then i think it will make life easier for them and for the uk as well to bring them into the uk. From a third country. Tell me a little bit more now about yourfamily, ahmed. Youre a family of eight and, obviously, you had to go through quarantine and now youre in another hotel, i believe. What is it like for you all having to live in a hotel . Small rooms, i understand, and what are the prospects of moving into a house . What have you been told . So, yeah, it has been challenging. After the current time, we have been living here for around a month in this holding hotel and we have found it challenging and tricky because managing life from a Hotel Room is never easy, especially when you are living in larger groups in hotels, for example, living with multiple family. So its been challenging and all the families are keenly waiting about, wating for news about their home, so hopefully, the Home Office and every institution concerned will be able to work on it as a priority because people have been very patiently waiting. And in terms of your childrens education, do they have places at schools and nursery . No, so thats one of the challenges, so the Charity Organisation working alongside the Education Department have very recently started some Preparation Classes for children where they are taught basic, basic skills, but theyre smart enough, i reckon, so there has to be more improvement indirectly as well, on that front, because education, our kids have been out of education for many months now and there is a huge appetite from them to get going and to start schooling. They must be desperate to. Most kids like a routine, dont they . And they must be desperate to have some kind of routine and to burn off some energy, to meet other children. I dont know how much of that theyve been able to do. Yeah, theyve seen like, as i said, its only the Preparation Classes and it is not everyday, so we really need Language Training for adults, for mums, because id say more than 90 of mums in afghan families dont speak english and they really need to learn that in the uk, so people are waiting for that as well. And also some vocational training for families and also for adults where possible so there is something if the relevant institutions could look into it, would be very useful. Have you been able to start Job Hunting or have you had any support to find a job, ahmed . Er, yes, its on my radar and hopefully i will be able to find one, but the challenge when it comes Tojob Finding is we need to have a permanent address to be able to create a Bank Account and so far we also dont have our biometric residence cards, so we really request the Home Office to work on those issues as a priority. And, for example, if you talk about my family and some otherfamilies, they have been here for months now, so it has been a long time and we need to move from here to be able to start the life smoothly and get the work we need to. And i also just wanted to very quickly say that the suitability is very important when it comes to housing, for example, we need to be close to a job market, you need to be close to a place where we can find a job because most of the families are among the professional skills things rather than living. Things rather than living on government benefits and all that. Ahmed speaking to anita earlier. Lets Take A Look now at some of the stories making the news across the uk today. Weve heard a lot in recent weeks about struggles in the Haulage Industry. A combination of Covid And Brexit has led to a shortage of Lorry Drivers, estimated to be more than 100,000 in the uk, and according to a firm in huntingdon, another factor is also at Play Alack of decent facilities. This from stuart ratcliffe. Meet rob, a trucker for over 30 years, and in that time he has seen many changes, particularly when he compares facilities for Truck Drivers on the continent to those in the uk. The Truck Stops over there, they are dedicated to Lorry Drivers and you get the proper facilities, ie showers, decent food, parking facilities. But over here you actually get nothing. You turn up at a Truck Stop and theres no security. And on top of that, youve got people who come and destroy your wagons, pinch your loads. Its just a nightmare at times. And to illustrate the lack of facilities, rob took me to a former Truck Stop which closed four years ago. Used to get here, that used to be everything that you needed. Used to be able to have a shower, get decent food, there was entertainment at night time, there was rooms available if you needed them. Basically, you get everything that you needed and its this type of thing that has been taken away. And the lack of Truck Stops, he says, leads to this. At night time, you get, if you look at the Access Roads, the Car Park as round the back there, that would be absolutely rammed. Then you get vehicles parking up on the side of the road, where we are now, and theres an old Access Road down there, Lorry Drivers will back down there. Basically, any space they can put their lorry, they will put it. The government says it is working to improve things, but says its up to the Haulage Industry to provide new Truck Stops. But the lack of incentives to become a driver, coupled with the shortages caused by brexit, could mean in the short term even more problems. I think its huge. I think its a long, long way to go yet. I think until we see real investment out there, nothing will change. I think sometimes people think its better than they are. They want to believe is better than it actually is. But if you go to speak to most drivers are on the road, they will tell you how difficult it is out there. And the wider concern is the shortage of drivers could mean continued shortages on the shelves a situation which could become even more of an issue in the Run Up To christmas. Stuart ratcliffe, bbc look east. Should green Belt Land be used to help ease the Housing Shortage in parts of london . Its something being considered in the north London Borough of enfield, in the face of strong opposition. Heres our Environment Correspondent tom edwards. This Green Belt is part of enfield in north london. Now on the front line when parts of it could be re designated for housing. We can see the shard, we can see canary wharf. Rob haywards family have found here for generations. He promotes Wildlife And Sustainability and he thinks the Green Belt should stay as it is. Its the lungs of london, isnt it . I mean, youve only got to look at how beautiful this is. Its fantastic. Her home, near upminster in essex, is 300 yards from the approved route of the m25. The Green Belt started to take shape in 1955 and has nearly always been under pressure from development. Here, residents objected to the m25. Theres so much pollution in london today. Its so congested and filthy. We must have clean air around us. This green Belt Site in hillingdon is another target of the house builders. In 1983, developers were looking at this site. The Green Belt now stretches for 40 miles from the capital. But there are those that think that we should have a much more nuanced approach to the Green Belt. Not all Green Belt is as beautiful and as well kept as this, and, so the argument goes, green Belt Protection is actually adding to the housing crisis. We think politicians need to think carefully about the type of land thats in the Green Belt and look at sites which are of poor quality, potentially Brownfield Sites, close to existing stations, which could potentially be developed. This was borisjohnson in 2014 as london mayor, visiting a Brownfield Site in enfield. Councils are set Housing Targets by the government. Here, thousands of families are in temporary accommodation. The local plan proposes to build 25,000 homes over the next 20 years. But this Brownfield Isnt enough, so it includes 6,000 on the Green Belt, although campaigners say those Homes Wouldnt be affordable. Building on the Green Belt simply doesnt deliver the type of Homes Enfield needs. The mayor doesnt like enfield pushing into the Green Belt but without a Sound Plan the council says Government Policy means developers will be able to try and build anywhere. Pressure on the green Belt Isnt going away any time soon. Tom edwards, bbc london. The tour de Yorkshire Organisers say they hope the Cycling Event is not gone for good. In the next few minutes the Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab, will face questions from mps about his handling of the crisis in afghanistan. Hell be in front of the foreign Affairs Committee at 2. 0ur political correspondent Damien Grammaticas is at westminster iona, what sort of time is he going to have on this committee . He is certainly going to have on this committee . He is certainly going to to have on this committee . He is certainly going to have to have on this committee . He is certainly going to have a certainly going to have a challenging time. This is the first and had been ready in scrutinise about all the ongoing questions as the price is continuous. We have been talking a Lot Today about the uk is now in conversation with the taliban about further evacuations for people still wanting to leave the country so i think theyres going to be a number of different categories, really, that the question facing dominic marble volunteer. There will be questions, undoubtedly, about the handling so far, holding him to account us in the key things that have happened over the last week, not least, you know, where did the intelligence go wrong and why was it that the us as well as the uk were not prepared for the speed at which the taliban took over the country as troops started to withdraw. I think they will be, certainly, a sort of look back but i think thes are also going to be a loss of looking forward about the next steps, given, as we say, there are many people to still be evacuated from the country, both british citizens but also for afghans trying to flee the country who are eligible to the resettlement in the case i think there will certainly be a lot of questions for Dominic Raab about what exactly the Uk Government is doing in terms of trying to negotiate with the taliban to establish Safe Passage for those people, what conversations he is happening with counterparts in neighbouring countries as well for establishing Land Routes for people who want to leave, what kind of Processing Hubs they will be a will not be sitting at the people so that those trying to get visas and applications to leave are able to do so, so i think theyres certainly going to be a lot of looking forward to those kind of questions as well. Also a little bit of heat on Dominic Raab himself or his own personal role. There has obviously been a lot of concern over the last couple of weeks about whether or not he himself was prepared for the development. 0bviously, himself was prepared for the development. Obviously, we heard a number of Newspaper Reports emerge that work on the kind of, discussing about whether he should have still been on holiday at the time when the taliban were approaching campbell and on the day that campbell fell to the taliban to approaching campbell. So he may well face on personal questions as well and obviously the Line Up chaired by Tom Tugendhat who is a veteran himself. Approaching kabul. Tom has given some of his criticisms about the handling of the Uk Government has of the vices over the last few well as a number of Cross Party Backbench mps were likely to come out with a number of questions and all these topics. Hagar questions and all these topics. How much of what questions and all these topics. How much of what has questions and all these topics. How much of what has happened in afghanistan can the Foreign Secretary, though, deflect by saying, look, we were given no choice, the united states are pulling out, we had to be the same. Certainly a thread that has been running two ministerial interviews over the last couple of weeks as this point, as you say, that with the us deciding that their deadline was the 31st Of August they had no choice but to stay on. Thats certainly something which the Defence Secretary Ben Wallace is raising a number of interviews as well saying that while they had conversations with other nato allies and other international partners about potentially looking at staying on it wasnt feasible and they had to, sort of, stick to that us deadline once it was given. I think, having said that, though, there are obviously questions about given that they knew that the us was withdrawing, given that they were already veggie citizens being advised to leave afghanistan much early on in the summer, why were, sort of, preparations to some extent still, kind of, taking the Uk Government by surprise. I was it that we werent able to get everyone else in time . I think these are still questions that Dominic Raab will be facing. I think it will become a sort of, pressure on him to accept personal Response Policy for some of the decisions that were made both because of, as you say, a tendency to perhaps deflect some decisions to the us but also, interestingly, two of the department as well. There has been what some have described as a little bit of a Blame Game going on within the Uk Government of the last couple of days. To make that did face some criticism too for his criticism of Military Intelligence as well. In Military Intelligence as well. In westminster, thank you very much. Time to look at the wedding with sarah. The weather. Good afternoon. The Weather Hasnt been changing in a hurry over recent days and no big changes over the next few days either. Most of us have got fairly overcast conditions out there this is the picture in buckland on the moor in devon. So, quite a lot of Grey Cloud out there, some sunshine here and there, particularly across parts of scotland, Northern Ireland and North West England. But over the next few days it is looking pretty cloudy some drizzle towards the east, a bit of sunshine around some northern and Western Parts of the uk. For the rest of the day, for scotland, Northern Ireland, North West England, some longer spells of sunshine here. Cloudier conditions further south across england and wales. That breeze coming in off the north sea, so making things a little bit chilly for the likes of newcastle, towards norwich, quite breezy through the English Channel too. But temperatures into the evening hours for most of us in the mid to high teens. Later this evening and overnight we will continue to see that cloud across most of us, filtering its way a little bit further westwards across parts of scotland, perhaps fringing into Northern Ireland. Still a few clear spells so just about dipping down into single figures for a few spots in the north west, but most of us overnight staying in double figures. Tomorrow similar to today, High Pressure still in charge, a lot of cloud around, a little bit more extensive cloud i think for Northern Ireland and southern scotland, but it will thin and break. Some holes in that cloud, i think, during the afternoon, lifting temperatures in the wake in the spots towards the west up to around 22 or 23 degrees. A little Bit Cooler down the East Coast, that we have still got that breeze coming in off the north sea. Here was the area of High Pressure that has been with us for quite a while, it is sticking around as we head towards The End of the week, lots of cloud trapped underneath that area of High Pressure, so a little bit gloomy as we head through the day on friday, similar to thursday. A bit of cloud around for most areas, some sunshine breaking through, perhaps a little bit more sunshine for Southern England and again for southern and western scotland, North West England and Northern Ireland. Still about 14 18 down the East Coast, against the warmest weather towards the west, with highs around 21 or 22 degrees. Into the weekend now and High Pressure still not far away, just starting to slip off towards the east. So, well start to see low pressure approaching from the west, but it looks like the High Pressure in on the east wins out. So, perhaps a few showers particularly on sunday for some Western Parts of the uk, but most of us staying dry and things turning a little bit warmer, too. Bye for now. This is Bbc News. Im xxxx. I martine croxall. The headlines the government says talks are taking place with the taliban to secure Safe Passage out of afghanistan for a number of british nationals and afghans who remain there. It comes as the taliban tell the bbc that their new government will be announced soon and therell be no women in senior roles. In this new government which has been announced, in the top posts i mean to say, in the cabinet there may not be women. The Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab is due to appear before mps to answer questions about his and the governments handling of the crisis in afghanistan. And we are going straight they are now to hear Dominic Raab in front of the Foreign Affairs select committee. 50 the Foreign Affairs select committee
