Warnings of life threatening floods and dangerous Storm Surges as tropical Storm Ida churns its way along the coast of Louisiana And Mississippi states. New research suggests thousands of strokes and Heart Attacks could be prevented if people switched to a common salt subsitute. More Paralympics Success for Team Gb as lee pearson, Andrew Small and Phoebe Paterson Pine claim golds. Good afternoon. The islamic State Group has claimed it was behind the Rocket Attack on Kabul Airport today. The united states says the missiles were intercepted by their anti missile system. No us or afghan casualties have been reported. Meanwhile, british ministers and officials are taking part in a number of international meetings aimed at defining a joint approach to the taliban in afghanistan. Rajini Vaidya Nathan reports. The aftermath of a Rocket Attack close to Kabul Airport. Eyewitnesses say the missiles were launched from a car this morning. Us officials have been warning another Terror Attack is highly likely, as the countrys troops prepare to depart afghanistan. Last night the pentagon launched a Drone Strike on a car packed with explosives close to the airport, saying it had thwarted a plot by islamic state. A family living close to the airport say they lost ten members in the Drone Strike including six children. The us says its now investigating. Translation we live in this neighbourhood. | a rocket came and hit a house, we know that people died. I have nothing to say, were distraught. Despite security concerns, america says its continuing evacuation flights up until tuesdays deadline. The uks already wrapped up its operations, but there are still many eligible for resettlement in the uk who are left behind. I talked to a man who couldnt get on his flight to britain because of the crowds at the airport. Now hes in fear of the taliban, and is moving to a different Safe House almost every day. Nowadays, if there is a knock on the door, your heart stops beating because youre worried its the taliban. What would your message be to the Uk Government right now . We are fighting to stay alive. Its not a matter of hours, not a matter of days its a matter of seconds. The Uk Government says the end of the mission makes evacuations much harder, but says its working with allies to find a way to get people out through other means. We will not end our Repatriation And Evacuation effortjust because Kabul Airport has fallen, although we have to understand that losing that as an Exit Route severely limits and has severely limited our ability to evacuate people. Those left behind dont have much hope to hold onto. Many are in fear, others displaced, struggling to find food. Tomorrow marks the end of americas longest war. Its legacy is uncertain as the future of afghanistan. Rajini vaidyanathan, Bbc News. As we heard in rajinis report, the us launched a Drone Strike on suspected militants planning a Suicide Bombing near the airport. Earlier, Kabul Resident Ramin yousufi told the bbc his cousin returned from work and went outside with his children when the Drone Strike happened killing ten of his relatives, including the cousin, and six of the children. A warning that some of what you hear may be distressing. He was the head of ouR Family. He had a0 years and he was engineer in a charity organisation. The other one, from the youngest, he was 30 years and he was an officer of army. An officer of international army. And the other was 19 and he was a student. And the seven others, they have four, five, two and i2, and 11 years. They were all children. But they have killed them in this attack in kabul. How would a person who is an engineer and who works, who hasjobs, charity organisation, they serve about two decades for the poor people, for those people that they. The North Part of our country in kabul, how can he be part of a daesh or a Suicide Attack . It is not possible. We see how, in our lives. Sobbing we gather with our parts of our members of our. How. Why they killed ouR Family, our children . Seven children. They are all gone now. They cannot find. Faith. Their bodies. Ramin yousufi bear, a resident of kabul. Our chief international correspondent, lyse doucet, is in kabul and she gave us her impression of the mood in the country. For the past few hours the american warplanes have been circling overhead and we think they are providing coveR For the last flights to leave afghanistan. This is not the way the americans ever expected and certainly not the way afghans expected they would leave and certainly no one expected this would happen 20 years after the us us led invasion, which toppled the taliban in late 2001. This is very much a nation on edge, a nation of 38 Million people and tens of millions of afghans have nowhere else to go but to stay where they are. When the us led Military Mission ends tomorrow, and it may end a bit sooner than that, given the Air Activity we are hearing, they will wait to see the chapter and verse, the rules and regulations, the shape of the new islamic system that the taliban will then put into place. It is not what they expected, it is not what the international community expected. Here it is 20 years after a major international engagement. Afghanistan is still one of the poorest countries in the world. It is a country where our viewers have seen day after day, night after night on their screens petrified afghans trying and hoping against hope to get through that crush at the airport to get through to the processing by british or other diplomats and to get onto that tarmac and take a flight out of the country a flight out of the country they no longer see as their own. It is a nightmare for so many afghans, so many dreams crushed, but we have to bear in mind that tens of millions of afghans will remain and hoping against hope that the world will not forget that the world will keep its promises not to forget about afghanistan. Joining me now is brad blitz, a professor of international politics and policy at University College london. He says ucl s team of 350 uk funded researchers are stranded in afghanistan, despite being eligible for an arap visa. Although they are eligible for any of to come out and come to britain. What is their current situation . These are 350 people, including families. These are researchers, activists, artists, film makers, who has been working to advance the british Governments Agenda on women, peace and security. This is a global agenda, a un agenda, a plank of british foreign policy, and they have been working with a number of british universities, including ucl, and they were conducting surveys for me as recently as six weeks ago. Now they are terrified, they are trapped in afghanistan and they are trapped because the Foreign Office didnt issue them with visas. It did not respond to requests, they are eligible, and they simply were not given permission to proceed to the Airport And Board planes. Poland have taken most of them, that is 25 in number. What we do know is there is no possibility for these people, should they be able to get to one of the neighbouring states, if they dont have a visa for onward travel. If they are lucky enough to get you one of those other countries, what may simply happen is they will spend a lifetime in a Refugee Camp in Pakistan Or Iran and thatis Refugee Camp in Pakistan Or Iran and that is not acceptable. These people must be resettled and for that to happen they must receive that visa from the British Government. And from the British Government. And when ou from the British Government. Theres a warning of life threatening flooding in the southern united states, as Hurricane Ida moves from louisiana into mississippi. The storm brought winds of 150mph when it made landfall yesterday, ripping roofs from buildings and killing a man whose house was hit by a falling tree. These are the latest pictures in New Orleans of the Debris And Damage brought by the hurricane. There are reports that Flash Flooding has trapped residents in their homes there, where defences were strengthened following Hurricane Katrina 16 years ago. President biden has declared a major disaster in louisiana, releasing extra resources for Rescue And Recovery efforts. Nada tawfik reports from New Orleans. This is the destructive power of ida. Lets return to the situation in afghanistan the pentagon says its investigating reports that ten civilians were killed in yesterdays us Drone Strike, which officials say targeted an islamic State Group Suicide Bomber planning an attack on Kabul Airport. Gary 0donoghue is in washington. The us evacuation now reaching its very final hours, the deadline of course tomorrow, august to 31st. Thats right, and you can tell by the numbers we are getting, ben, that the evacuation is sort of winding down. The last 2a hours about 1200 people were taken out of the airport, that is significantly down on previous days. They are now focusing on what they call Force Protection because there are fewer troops to remain at the airport and then they become vulnerable and they have got to make sure they are safe right up until one of those gets on the last plane now and things really winding down before Tomorrows Deadline and in the meantime the pentagon investigating suggestions there have been civilian casualties, including children, as a result of that Drone Strike on a suspected Suicide Bomber headed for the airport in the centre of kabul yesterday. They went from a kind of, we are not sure about this, to a kind of, it is possible there have been civilian casualties. New research from the George Institute for global health in sydney suggests thousands of strokes and Heart Attacks could be prevented if people reduced salt in their diet. A study of 20,995 people in Rural China who had a history of stroke or were over 60 and had high Blood Pressure showed fewer Stroke Events in those taking a mixture of 75 salt and 25 potassium chloride, compared to those who consumed regular salt. Joining me now from banbury is graham macgregor, chairman of World Action on salt and health, and professor of cardiovascular medicine at barts and the London School of medicine. Thanks very much for being with us. How important do you think the results of this study are . Titer . Results of this study are . Very important. Results of this study are . Very important. Very results of this study are . Very important, very important i results of this study are . Important, very important for developing countries, where most of the salt is added to the food by the consumer and what they need to do now is switch to a Salt Substitute, as you have just said, that contains 30 Potassium Fluoride and 70 sodium chloride, so it produces reduces their Salt Intake and increases their potassium intake, which we have had really good result showing it reduces strokes, and events like that, so getting a stroke and surviving, so it is really good news. In terms of the uk, obviously most of the salt we eat is added by the Food Industry and we need to get the Food Industry to reduce that salt and they can use potassium instead of it. Consumers in the uk who are still using salt, we would advise them not to Add Salt to theiR Food, we would advise them not to Add Salt to theirfood, but we would advise them not to Add Salt to theiR Food, but they can obviously switch to a Salt Substitute and reduce the risks and get their Blood Pressure down. This Salt Substitute, will tell us a bit more about it. To what extent does it taste like salt and would you know the difference . It is it taste like salt and would you know the difference . Know the difference . It is very similar, know the difference . It is very similar. But know the difference . It is very similar, but you know the difference . It is very similar, but you should know the difference . It is very similar, but you should use i know the difference . It is very l similar, but you should use less know the difference . It is very i similar, but you should use less of it. There are several available in the uk, the commonest in the uk available is called lobe salt, which is 60 potassium and 40 sodium, and that does taste slightly different, but if you use less of that it still has the same salty flavour and the chinese one, you would be hard pressed to tell the difference, actually, particularly if you use less of it and that has the double effect of actually eating less of the salt and having less salt and more potassium and that is the really the key to it. 5 really the key to it. As you suggested. Really the key to it. As you suggested. It really the key to it. As you suggested, it is really the key to it. As you suggested, it is notjust i really the key to it. As you i suggested, it is notjust about consumers, how much they put onto theiR Food, consumers, how much they put onto theirfood, it is consumers, how much they put onto theiR Food, it is about the Food Industry and how much is in the food we buy in shops and supermarkets. How easy is it going to be or how difficult to persuade the Food Industry to reduce or change the Salt Intake of their products . Share Salt Intake of their products . Are absolutel Salt Intake of their products . Sire absolutely right, 80 of the salt we consume an average comes from the Food Industry in processed foods. We have had a very successful campaign in the uk and getting the Food Industry to slowly reduce the Salt Intake in foods, but they stopped with the Coalition Government and the conservative government the programme has not progressed in the last ten years, which is a tragedy because many of thousands of people have died unnecessarily. I think the Food Industry is willing to do more, but it needs a forceful Government Agency to police them and make sure they do it and this is what we are asking Sajid Javid to do to really resuscitate the salt reduction programme. But this also gives us the key as well. The Food Industry can reduce salt and where it is difficult to reduce it technically they can add potassium. They have been given the Go Ahead by a Specialist Advisory to do that, but this study really proves the benefits of reducing salt and increasing potassium, so i think they will have a greater willingness to do that now and i hope this will result in a bigger reduction of Salt Intake and a consequent reduction in the number of people dying unnecessarily from strokes and heart disease. ,.
