After storming to gold with a superb win over three time champions the united states. Hello. Two us officials have told the Reuters News Agency theyve carried out a Military Strike in the afghanistan Capital Kabul. The officials said the strike targetted suspected Isik K militants. These are the latest pictures we have from the afghan capital well bring you more details of the incident when we have it. We are piecing together more information at the moment. Lets take a look at some of todays other developments. It comes as the Prime Minister marks the end of britain s 20 year Military Campaign in afghanstan called the efforts by the Armed Forces heroic and said the Uk Departure from afghanistan was the culmination of a mission unlike anything weve seen in our lifetimes. The last flights have begun arriving at Raf Brize Norton with Military Personnel and diplomatic staff as the largest evacuation of its kind since the second World War draws to a close. More than 15 Thousand people have been airlifted out of afghanistan by the uk in the past fornight. But hundreds of afghans eligible for relocation and Uk Nationals have been left behind. Us president Joe Biden is en route to Dover Air Force base to receive the bodies us Service Members killed in afghanistan. The united states national Security Adviser, jake sullivan, has said relevant terrorist groups in afghanistan do not possess Advance Ability to plot attacks abroad. The first of our reports comes from our political correspondent, Jessica Parker. Landing back in the uk, one of the last british planes to leave kabul. These troops widely praised. They helped evacuate more than 15,000 people. That as the taliban took over. Borisjohnson says the government will engage alongside allies with the regime the uk helped topple 20 years ago, in a statement released by Downing Street this morning. If the new regime in kabul wants diplomatic recognition or to unlock the billions that are currently frozen, they will have to ensure safe passage for those who wish to leave the country, to respect the rights of women and girls, to prevent afghanistan from again becoming an incubator for global terror. Thousands got out, british nationals and afghans who worked with the uk. But hundreds have been left behind, some say many more. I dont think there is a single person deployed forward, whether the thousand or so in kabul or the many hundreds of others drawn across from her Majestys Government in the Middle East or back here who could have given more in the last two and two and half weeks. The effort has been frankly truly humbling to see the hours worked, the exhaustion painted on peoples faces. We tried our best. We have absolutely tried our best. Government sources insist they are ramping up efforts to try and establish safe routes out via border countries such as pakistan. The journey ahead looks complicated. When i spoke to officials from the pakistani government in the last couple of days, there was an element of pessimism about how much pakistan is going to be able to do. They have 3 Million afghan refugees already in the country. It was 2001 in the aftermath of 9 11 that british troops arrived as part of a us led mission. A57 Uk Personnel lost their lives. Not in vain says borisjohnson. 20 years on, a Hasty Withdrawl and claims that has damaged britains standing in the world. Because we got this so wrong, if when we go to another country to intervene, the people who work with us, the local civilians work with us, what confidence will they have that we will stand by them . 0ur words might seem quite empty now. That is a tragedy and we are going to have to work really hard in the world to restore our reputation so people will trust us and work with us in the future. Disembarking at Brize Norton in 0xfordshire, the british ambassador to afghanistan. There is no embassy there any more. He will soon head up operations out of qatar. This is history but not as many would have wanted it. And Jessica Parker is here with me now. Lets have a look at what the Prime Minister has been saying, obviously paying tribute to the troops in afghanistan who have been involved in this Evacuation Operation over the last days and weeks. But, you know, there is a difficult reality that people have been left behind, Uk Nationals and others eligible to come to uk. The Vice Admiral who was in charge of the Uk Evacuation saying he would be very nervous and saying he would be very nervous and saying the withdrawal was a success until the allies had left. This difficult reality that Boris Johnson has to face. What more is the government going to do to try and ensure the people who are eligible to leave can i get out of the country . To leave can i get out of the count 7~ ~. , to leave canlget out ofthe count 7~ ~. ,. , country . We dont know exactly how many peeple country . We dont know exactly how many peeple are country . We dont know exactly how many people are left country . We dont know exactly how many people are left in country . We dont know exactly how many people are left in afghanistan. For example, afghans who worked with the british authorities over the last two decades, the government estimates have put those on the high hundreds. Somewhere between 800 and 1100. The Labour Party seeing the thing we figure as high higher. In terms of how they get out, the airport is no longer a possibility. The last british plane has left. The americans will be very soon. Government sources telling me they are working hard to build those relationships, have those conversations with border countries like pakistan for example, to try and get people through the land borders. 0bviously that is fraught with difficulty. But people have the right paperwork . Will you be able to get through Telephone Checkpoints . What Processing Centres will be in place for those people . Labour shadow Foreign Secretary was saying in conversation she has been having with pakistani officials, the Mood Music has been rather negative. I think we will have to see how it pans out over the coming weeks and months. I dont think anyone is pretending it is going to be easy to get these people out. Get these people out. Speaking of conversation. Get these people out. Speaking of conversation, what get these people out. Speaking of conversation, what about conversation, what about conversations with the taliban . The us national Security Adviser doing an interview with Cbs News Today saying the taliban have communicated privately and publicly with the us that they will allow for safe passages of americans and others wishing to leave afghanistan. What sort of contacts have been developed between the uk and the taliban to that end, to get my people out . What that end, to get my people out . What seems to be that end, to get my people out . What seems to be the that end, to get my people out . Wrist seems to be the message that end, to get my people out . Lizisgt seems to be the message is that end, to get my people out . Lidisgt seems to be the message is that there will be engagement with the taliban but it will be conditional, as We Werejust taliban but it will be conditional, as we were just hearing from the Prime Minister, conditional on things like a situation with women and girls, with the rights upheld, conditional in terms of what money is provided to afghanistan in terms of humanitarian aid as well. They want to make sure that gets through. Borisjohnson want to make sure that gets through. Boris johnson trying want to make sure that gets through. Borisjohnson trying to ensure that is leveraged there by international authorities and international partners. Realistically, our influence of course is diminished there. So, think again that looks pretty difficult. But it is interesting to hear that those conversations have been going on with us. As well, though, i think for Dominic Raab of the Foreign Secretary, he will want to show he is getting some sort of grip on the situation. As some in his own party have accused him of being Asleep At The Wheel he is in front of the select committee on wednesday before Parliament Official Leak returns, these cooperation with the taliban, these cooperation with the taliban, these sorts of things are going to be put to the Foreign Secretary later this week. Qm. Be put to the Foreign Secretary later this week. Be put to the Foreign Secretary later this week. 0k, jessica, Thank Ou Ve later this week. 0k, jessica, thank you very much flights bringing british troops and officials out of afhanistan have been arriving back at Raf Brize Norton today. Our correspondent, simonjones, is there. Tell us what activity there has been so far. ,. , so far. The first flight from the re. Ion so far. The first flight from the region landed so far. The first flight from the region landed here so far. The first flight from the region landed here at so far. The first flight from the region landed here at raf so far. The first flight from the | region landed here at Raf Brize Norton at around half past eight this morning. 0n Norton at around half past eight this morning. On board around 250 Military Personnel and diplomatic staff. I think the thing that struck me was there is no sense of celebration, no ceremony here. It may well be the end of the mission in afghanistan, but certainly a feeling here that it has not been completed, there is still work to do in the coming weeks and months. I think the fact that it was really symbolised by the Uk Ambassador to afghanistan getting off the plane. We got off the plane alone, there was a Brief Handshake with his boss. 0n the tarmac he spoke saying that in the past couple of weeks at the airport had been intense and extraordinary. You may remember he relocated from the embassy in to the airport to help british people get out of the country and ordered to help afghan interpreters and their families who worked with the british forces over the last 20 years to leave the country, too. He was keen to stress that britain will not forget the people who have been left behind. He was speaking about the need for the taliban to ensure safe passage for british people are interpreters who worked with the british forces to be still allowed to leave the country, to really complete that mission. Now, we are expecting some more flights during the course of today. But be under no doubt that it is over because all of the Uk Troops are now out of kabul and are out of afghanistan, along with the diplomatic staff. In the coming hours and perhaps the coming days, more returning to Brize Norton to go into a period of quarantine, a period of decompression. To go into a period of quarantine, a period of decompression. Activity in Afd Hanistan Period of decompression. Activity in afghanistan is period of decompression. Activity in afghanistan is now period of decompression. Activity in afghanistan is now over. Period of decompression. Activity in afghanistan is now over. Simon, afghanistan is now over. Simon, thank you very much. Simonjones at Raf Brize Norton. Live now to our Correspondent Rajini Vaidyanathan whos following developments from delhi. Lets begin about talking about the explosion, a blast of some sort that has been reported. We have seen images of the smoke coming out of a location in the capital where this explosion happened. What can you tell us . 50 explosion happened. What can you tell us . , explosion happened. What can you tellus . ,. , tell us . So images were circulating on social media, tell us . So images were circulating on social media, as tell us . So images were circulating on social media, as you tell us . So images were circulating on social media, as you say, tell us . So images were circulating on social media, as you say, of on social media, as you say, of smoke, huge plumes of smoke in the vicinity of Kabul Airport. And it was confirmed to the bbc by the afghan Health Minister Spokesman saying that an explosion did take place close to the airport. That explosion, according to the source who has confirmed as to my colleague, was a rocket that hit a house close to the airport. 0ther House close to the airport. Other News Agency saying that witnesses also saw a rocket hit a Building Close to the airport as well. That was on the northern side of the airport. We havejust had was on the northern side of the airport. We have just had this from the Reuters News Agency which says an american forces launched a strike, striking a Car Bomb that was possibly going to hit the airport. This has only come from writers, from their sources. It is only one agency that is reporting it at the moment. Reuters. It continues saying the officials say that the strike was targeting suspected militants. We are trying to get confirmation of that from the white house. That is the latest we have got really. It sounds like it is slightly different to thursdays devastating attack, which was also close to Kabul Airport. An attack which claimed more than 170 lives. I believe we are expecting a briefing from the pentagon over the next couple of hours. We may get some more detail on this. President biden had warned yesterday, hadnt he, of another attack. Intelligence suggesting another attack was imminent. Clearly, in these last few days before the us fills out, potentially the most dangerous for those troops remaining on the ground. Those troops remaining on the round. , those troops remaining on the round. ,. , ground. That is right. The us have been seeing ground. That is right. The us have been seeing in ground. That is right. The us have been seeing in the ground. That is right. The us have been seeing in the last ground. That is right. The us have been seeing in the last few ground. That is right. The us have been seeing in the last few days i been seeing in the last few days this phase of the Evacuation Process will be an extremely dangerous one. And as you say they are, the us president saying that it is highly likely that there will be another attack at Kabul Airport and an advisory that went out this morning in no uncertain terms said there was a specific, credible threat on another attack happening in the next 24 to 36 hours and that advisory urging any american citizens in afghanistan to immediately leave the airport, if they were there. So there was a heightened sense of security around the airport. We have been hearing that the eye an increased number of taliban checkpoints on the way to the airport is only people who have the correct Documentation And Paperwork were able to get anywhere close to those gates at the airport. So in very different picture from what we were seeing, those tragic scenes of moral make so many afghans desperately the country make those tragic scenes of the so many afghans wanting to leave the country. The us has been saying it hopes to continue with more flights by the 31st deadlines. We are approaching that Tuesday Deadline fast. Lets see how many more people will be able to evacuate in that time. Of course, this is all in a very tense security situation. Thank ou ve very tense security situation. Earlier i spoke tojon white, fomer royal Marines Officer who served in afghanistan. It was while on patrol with 40 commando that he stepped on an ied resulting in the loss of three of his limbs. Jon is now a motivational speaker. Yes, i think they would have been a huge sense of vulnerability for them out there. Not a huge amount of protection, relatively small forces, clearly a big target. Whilst trying to do a difficult administrative job as well terms of processing people to get out of there. So, yes, an incredibly difficult task and im sure there is a huge sense of relief for the majority of them, having landed back in the uk this morning. And i am sure many of them, and i was looking at photographs that were appearing on this mornings front pages of troops on military planes preparing to leave, and just looking at all those faces and expressions wondering what was going through their minds. We have heard from the Vice Admiral who was in charge of the Uk Evacuation for the uk seeing it was not a success until all the allies had left. I am sure that is going to be uppermost in many of the troops minds and thoughts about people who they were not able to get out. Yes, it is such a difficult situation and certainly in the last couple of weeks i have spoken to two different friends who were both trying to sponsor and help get afghans out of there. One of them were successful in getting a farmer former aide from when she worked in the year and out of there, with the family and 20 afghan women. Watching her, i happened to be away with her, watching her going through the process, the stress of constantly getting updates, not knowing what was going on, that huge sense of relief. Unfortunately i was talking to other Friend Yesterday who was trying to sponsor a couple of Afghan Army officers to try and get them out and it looks like he hasnt been successful in doing that. Very, very difficult. Very difficult for him to come round to the idea that he couldnt, if you like, save them. At least one of those officers had had Death Threats given to him already. So, yes, how do you call this a success . Well, how do you measure the success . It is a very difficult thing. I think we need to be slightly realistic in that and everyone has done the best they can and they will have done a lot of good, theyve got a lot of people out there. But, you know, we cant save everyone. That is a very difficult thing to get your head around. The headlines on bbc news.
