Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the sunday papers. With me are mo hussein, a former conservative advisor, and the author and journalist, rachel shabi. Britain out of afghanistan the telegraph leads on the exit of Uk Military Personnel from afghanistan after 20 years. It writes that the pm promises to honour the sacrifices of those who fell. And a look at those Left Behind. The sunday times focuses on the eruption of a Blame Game in whitehall over the thousands now trapped in afghanistan following The End of the evacuation mission. The final stages of evacuations from afghanistan also lead the front of todays observer. It reports on claims that thousands of emails from charities and mps detailing afghans efforts to escape that were sent to the Foreign Office were ignored. And mps detailing afghans efforts to escape that were sent to the Foreign Office were ignored. Words of gratitude we ll forever be grateful. The express quotes the Prime Minister speaking about the military S Evacuation of 15,000 people from afghanistan. And our blood on your hands, boris the words from an afghan translator in hiding lead on the front page of the mirror. So lets begin. I thought we would start because there are three dimensions with how the legacy, what is happening now, the legacy, what is happening now, the recriminations and what will happen in the future. If you start with the Sunday Telegraph and the picture of the british troops being brought out in the Prime Minister saying this is a moment to reflect on everything we have sacrificed and everything we have achieved in the last two decades. I wonder what your thoughts are on the legacy. I last two decades. I wonder what your thoughts are on the legacy. Thoughts are on the legacy. I think it is riaht thoughts are on the legacy. I think it is right to thoughts are on the legacy. I think it is right to reflect thoughts are on the legacy. I think it is right to reflect on thoughts are on the legacy. I think it is right to reflect on the thoughts are on the legacy. I think it is right to reflect on the huge i it is right to reflect on the huge human Cost And Sacrifice weve seen from our own troops and also the international community and the afghans themselves. And just take a moment to really about that. Theres a lot of focus now on how do we preserve the gains that have been made. I spent some time when i was with the Ministry Of Defence in afghanistan as a Media Adviser to the forces. I saw Girl School is being opened and progress on things like the Rule Of Law and it is quite sad to think this will all be lost. The future seems very uncertain so whilst the wealth can talk about preserving the gains we need to understand what that means and how that will be done because we dont have as many tools at our disposal as we had before to actually ensure this happens. As we had before to actually ensure this happens as we had before to actually ensure this happens as we had before to actually ensure this happens. Rachel, what are your thou~hts this happens. We were responding to a Security Threat and there has been real progress made in there has been real progress made in the country as regards the impact on peoples lives. This cut and run approach based on the deadline imposed by President Biden has left the really big mess. Nobody has talked about being in afghanistan forever but it is about how you leave stability and making sure the capital secure and making sure you can get your people out. Now the only thing we can talk about is sanctions. How much the taliban kid about the sanctions is yet to be seen. All the fact afghan people more than taliban leadership . These are questions we will see getting played out but itjust goes back to the point that we dont have as many levers at our disposal and looking to China And Russia to help us on this when they will not be in the same page i think lee is quite an Uncertain Future for the people of afghanistan. There were cases flagged by government ministers, the observer has been told, and simply were not looked at. What are your thoughts on this . Obviously the airlift itself was a success in terms of the numbers brought out but this really has marred the whole operation. This Observer Story talking about 5000 this Observer Story talking about 5000 E Mails but of course there may be 5000 E Mails but of course there may he more 5000 E Mails but of course there may be more than one person in each emait be more than one person in each emait its be more than one person in each Emait Itsa be more than one person in each e mail. It is not good for i element to be and when there is unnamed officials briefing against you to a range of newspapers. You can see the frustration within government about certain decisions made may maybe took too long to be made may maybe took too long to be made and i think it puts him in quite a difficult position and there will be a lot more scrutiny on what the Foreign Office now does and what happens next because the airlift has been, i think, happens next because the airlift has been, ithink, are happens next because the airlift has been, i think, are good and impressive thing, the largest since World War ii, but actually this number of 1000 Left Behind seems to be quite low. The story on the front of the observer talking about all those unread E Mails she was probably a lot more people and a lack of preparation in terms of what is a plan for them . Its not good enough, the government is telling them they should get to the borders to the neighbouring countries. That will take them quite a long time and what happens when they do get to the borders . Will that be let in, will they get through taliban checkpoints . I am afraid the next stages and the plan for the rest of the people we need to get out and we were debt to is really, really unclear and is not good enough. Lets talk a bit more about what happens going forward. Christina lamb on the front of The Sunday Times under the headline the west must work with the taliban repeat the horrors of 9 11 and courting the pakistan Security Supervisor who says if the outgoing is the same as before the outcome will threaten everyone, pakistan and the west. The question many are asking, how it will become clear how the taliban will become clear how the taliban will rule afghanistan. The taliban saying it will be very different this time around and the Observer Asksin this time around and the observer asks in an article by Emma Graham Harrison writing from islamabad how soon will the taliban show their true colours . Rachel, do you hold out much hope that the taliban are different and what you think about how the west handles it . I different and what you think about how the west handles it . How the west handles it . I think what is clear how the west handles it . I think what is clear and how the west handles it . I think what is clear and we how the west handles it . I think what is clear and we can how the west handles it . I think what is clear and we can see i how the west handles it . I think what is clear and we can see it l how the west handles it . I think| what is clear and we can see it in afghanistan and sought on a as Liherai Afghanistan and sought on a as liberal Intervention Results in holographic states and increases in extremism. That is the issue now, that is extremism. That is the issue now, that is why extremism. That is the issue now, that is why afghan voices and other experts that is why afghan voices and other experts in that is why afghan voices and other experts in the region are seeing we do now experts in the region are seeing we do now need to engage in some way with the do now need to engage in some way with the taliban because the alternative is worse and the alternative is worse and the alternative we already saw that awful alternative we already saw that awful strike on the air a few days ago awful strike on the air a few days ago the awful strike on the air a few days ago. The alternative is an islamic state ago. The alternative is an islamic state roles ago. The alternative is an islamic state roles in and that is the Regional State Roles in and that is the regional franchise, we dont know the extent regional franchise, we dont know the extent of their strength in that region the extent of their strength in that region. But that is something that the taliban is going to have to take on. The taliban is going to have to take on it the taliban is going to have to take on it is the taliban is going to have to take on. It is compromising security and stability~ on. It is compromising security and stability~ it on. It is compromising security and stability. It is not really clear how stability. It is not really clear how much is going to do that in an area how much is going to do that in an area where how much is going to do that in an area where where there is an unfolding area where where there is an unfolding humanitarian Crisis And Security unfolding humanitarian Crisis And Security is unfolding humanitarian Crisis And Security is minimal. They are not going security is minimal. They are not going to security is minimal. They are not going to do security is minimal. They are not going to do that on their own and a lot of going to do that on their own and a lot of people are saying whatever the taliban are saying in terms of its pr the taliban are saying in terms of its pr that the taliban are saying in terms of its pr that we have changed and we are much its pr that we have changed and we are much more progressive now and women are much more progressive now and women are are much more progressive now and women are fine and we are pluralistic and all those things is purely pluralistic and all those things is purely pr. The taliban is still the tatihan purely pr. The taliban is still the taliban and cannot be anything else. Mo, taliban and cannot be anything else. Mo. How taliban and cannot be anything else. Mo, how closely should the West Work for the taliban . I mo, how closely should the West Work for the taliban . For the taliban . I think this is auoin to for the taliban . I think this is going to be for the taliban . I think this is going to be quite for the taliban . I think this is going to be quite a for the taliban . I think this is going to be quite a difficult i for the taliban . I think this is i going to be quite a difficult and jarring issue for lots of western countries. We are in the grim situation where they are our Security Partners having carried out so many attacks against us. In terms of the future of of the country and what happens to the people living under taliban control there will have to be some kind of coordination and working together. Just because the taliban have a Press Operation and twitter accounts to say some Sound Bite media friendly things it does not mean this is taliban 2. 0 or taliban light. We have tojudge does not mean this is taliban 2. 0 or taliban light. We have to judge them tjy taliban light. We have to judge them by the actions rather than their words. There are still reports even though they talk about an amnesty the evidence points them doing the opposite. Lets remember kabul as not all of afghanistan and how homogenous is this true . What are the other fighters around the Country Doing and who do they take their orders from . I think it is a really scary and uncertain time and just because they are now seeing as been the new government and the fatuous partners i do think and are being regarded as partners, i think we do need to look at what theyre doing rather than what are saying. Covid cases higher than a year ago according to the observer which is a sobering statistic. In spite of the Vaccination Programme is where we are and that is the warning at the reopening of schools this week will trigger further rises covid in cases. The question about whether vaccination should be given to 12 Euros to 15 year olds. 12 year old children. Mo, what are your thoughts . I 12yearold children. Mo, what are your thoughts . Your thoughts . I think the Skills Reo Enin your thoughts . I think the skills reopening and your thoughts . I think the skills reopening and then your thoughts . I think the skills reopening and then the your thoughts . I think the skills i reopening and then the universities following that is going to be a real Pressure Point in terms of the transmission going Back Up this schools reopening. We have already seen that happening in scotland and begs the question about how the intervening Holiday Period has been used and could more progress had been made in vaccinating younger people and kids going back to school and how schools were prepared for the return. Im not sure how much of that has actually happened and it feels as if it may be a bit too late. On the plus side, Others Number is quite startling, 26 times higher than a year ago, the number of thankfully that allergies and infections is lower because of the vaccine so that is the big Game Changer and i think there is some talk of may be some restrictions coming back over the winter. Im not sure how easy that would be for the government to sell or to even get through the House Of Commons but we do need to see what the uptake is and how much of that results in hospitalisations and how long the vaccine is effective before any decisions on this can be made. Rachel, what do you think of the prospect of restrictions going back in . I prospect of restrictions going back in . ~ ~. , prospect of restrictions going back in . ~ , in . I think mo is absolutely right and most nurses in . I think mo is absolutely right and most nurses believe in . I think mo is absolutely right | and most nurses believe vaccines in . I think mo is absolutely right i and most nurses believe vaccines are having and most nurses believe vaccines are having an and most nurses believe vaccines are having an effect on reducing hospitalisations and deaths, thank goodness. There are two prongs to this, goodness. There are two prongs to this, especially in terms of what will happen going into Autumn And Winter will happen going into Autumn And Winter. One is looking at what our government is doing in terms of Nobody Government is doing in terms of nobody wants to go into another tockdown, nobody wants to go into another lockdown, clearly. However, when you look lockdown, clearly. However, when you took at lockdown, clearly. However, when you look at things like releasing the restrictions on masks as the government did, and actually doing so little government did, and actually doing so little around the key issue of ventilation was an airborne virus, there ventilation was an airborne virus, there are ventilation was an airborne virus, there are questions to be asked of our government in that context. White migrated top to bottom great to talk to both of you this morning. Hello, hello, everyone, i hope you are doing all right. Many of us saw a bit of Brightness And Sunshine yesterday and we will tend to see a bit more of that today although it is rather cloudy and grey for some of us. There is the headline, bright and breezy, dry for most, i say dry for most because we still have High Pressure in charge, there it is on the big picture. This will stick around over the next couple of days introducing further settled conditions, its shifting a bit towards the North West and in doing so, it will draw in a bit more of a breeze but a Satellite Image from earlier on showing it keeping things like this Weather Front at bay and continue to do so over the next couple of days. You can see the Wind Arrows coming down from the north, introducing a bit of a breeze along eastern coastal parts now part cloudy across northern ireland, Northern England and the thickest of the cloud we may get the Odd Spot of drizzle, turning cloudy across the South West of england, the odd shower possible and quite a range in temperatures, cooler under the cloud, 15 or 16 across parts of scotland, could get a 22 In Cardiff where we see sunshine. As we head through the evening we see the return of some low cloud, Mist An Fog as well, becoming rather extensive across parts of northern ireland, scotland into Northern England and this will extend further south. We may get the Odd Spot of drizzle with lows of around 13 or 10 celsius.
