Growing calls for a temporary Visa Scheme to try to fill the gap. Our Business Correspondent Katy austin reports. Preparing these turkeys for christmas involves 100 extra workers who used to come in from eastern europe. Because of brexit, we dont have that guaranteed labour that weve had for the past 30 years. The bigger companies that supply all the supermarkets, they had made the decision to cut their production by between 20 and 25 , which is huge. So, there will absolutely be a shortage of quality british turkeys. Other areas of Food Production are also having problems. A shortage of Meat Processors has caused a backlog of pigs on farms. The government is basically saying that furlough is coming to an end at The End of september, so you can have all of those people and that will resolve your issues. Now, those people arent living in areas where the manufacturing plants are, they dont have the right skills, and i suspect a lot of them wouldnt want to go and work in Food Manufacturing plants. Food Industry Trade bodies warn theres now a chronic Labour Shortage across the whole Supply Chain. This business grows, imports and distributes fresh fruit and veg. Theres everything here from carrots to pomegranates, and a lot of it ends up in High Street restaurants. But here at this distribution centre, theyre 20 short of staff. We are definitely going to start seeing more i supermarket shelves empty, Restaurant Plates empty. And then, the big concern ongoing from that is christmas. He supports calls for a temporary Visa Scheme to bring in Food Workers and Lorry Drivers from europe. Isnt it more important to build a sustainable workforce from within the uk, and ultimately pay them more . Im more than happy to do that. But if the era of cheap labour is over, so tool is the era of cheap food. The government says the Supply Chain is resilient and it wants to see employers invest in the domestic workforce. But some firms are getting increasingly worried about their ability to keep our shelves and plates full. Katy austin, Bbc News. Now on Bbc News our world. Boris johnson the coronavirus is the biggest threat this country has faced for decades. If too many people become seriously unwell at one time, the nhs will be unable to handle it. From this evening, i must give the british people a very simple instruction you must stay at home. 0h, hello. Hello hi. Hello hi hiya. Hello, hi. Sound, um. Brains not working. Couldnt work for two weeks. Welcome to oxford gardens. I wake up in the morning, see the blue sky, sun out, and i think wow, what a beautiful day. And it doesnt take me long. I look out the window, open up my blinds and i see people walking with their masks, then it hits me. It doesnt feel real. But you know its real because youve got the letters in your hand telling you you must stay at home. Well, ive been here 25 years. Weve got a range of people. People who are obviously quite wealthy. There are quite a lot of people renting, privately, and also social housing. And its a wonderful mix, you cannot tell by walking down the street what type of accommodation. I dont know the very posh houses, the £12 million house, i wish i did. Next door, theyre multimillionaires and were housing association, this block. I think all Childrens Entertainers are big kids at heart. Schools closed on that friday and i thought gosh, well, thats it. Im not going to be doing any entertaining. I was talking to my friend and saying oh, this is awful, everythings ended, and she goes, why dont you do it online . It looks like a Rats Nest i actually thought it would never go virtual. I really used to say to people, it can never be anything other than doing it in real life and look at me now cause i did a party for a Little Girl in South Africa the other day. How awesome is that . So, now im a global Childrens Entertainer hello, is there anybody out there . The first few that i did, when i saw all the kids in their little boxes and not meeting and playing together, i nearly cried. Ijust wanted them all to be together and be able to be kids and run around and touch. You need to un mute yourself it sort of brought home those implications of lockdown where kids really arent running around the playground together, thats my aim and my ambition, is to bring them together. And how old are you, are you ten . Five and my little sisters two the kids still need to play, the kids still need to have that outlet. And im 18 and how many more have you got booked . Ive none that was my last one so, im sad, but im not worried. I think theres a market for what i do. All i can do is what i feel i was put here to do which is to bring Love And Joy to kids, thats all i can do i can only tend my garden. And everyones got a garden they can tend, they can bring, and i reckon if we all do that, that is our answer. Give yourselves a clap well done, that was wonderful dancing, everybody were rather lucky not to be alone in a house. So, in total, were 17 in the whole house. I dont think many of my friends have all their cousins living in the same house in the middle of london. Its actually really fun cause it feels like christmas every day. And people who lived through war always say it is the happiest time of my life, and i never really understood that. For the moment, for us, its one of the happiest moments of our lives. Its pretty bad to say that, i know, because a lot of people are suffering, but actually, it is. Reporter in the uk, the number of dead has risen by 684 in one 24 hour period. That brings the total number of deaths in hospitals on the disease to 3,605. Matt hancock we cannot relax our discipline now. Stay at home and then you will be doing your part. We are losing so many brilliant, beautiful people. Just yesterday, i was told by my mum that a next Door Neighbour who got the virus in a care home, she passed away. That really hit me. Ive got to stay at home completely. Im severe asthmatic but if i ever, ever got coronavirus, it would basically kill me. Im just so grateful ive got somewhere that i can actually go and sit down, cup of tea, maybe a naughty slice of cake. Thats my little piece of england, you know . Especially this time, theres so much anxiety. Ive actually had some neighbours say, what a lovely garden, it brightens up my day. Thank goodness youre still doing it. I do get my love of gardening from my mum. Every summer, its a tradition where i would go with my mum to a Garden Centre and i will help her do all her hanging baskets. I cant wait for this Coronavirus Thing to be finished and i can get back and see her. Im worried about my Mum And Dad. Theyre 85, 86, in the summer. Just recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. That sheer thought that something could happen to them, that is what frightens me most. I got really, really scared, and i was praying, every day, please, god, protect them. You need to realise how vulnerable we all are. Were not invincible. And i think we need to, once we get over this, look at how we live. Reporter Breaking News coming into us within the past few seconds, the british prime Minister Borisjohnson has been taken into intensive in hospital with coronavirus. His office says his conditioni worsened during the course of this afternoon, and on the advice of his medical team, he was moved to the intensive care unit. It may very well be a Wake Up Call for him. He underestimated the severity of it, whether that will give him another perspective on it all, yeah, it could do. But my main concern was if something really happened to him and he didnt survive through, the alternatives were not terribly auspicious. Hi. Ive lost count of the weeks, i really have. People cant come in and I Cant go out. I dont go very far now reall , its like the hospital and the doctor and the shop. Whats wrong with you if you dont mind me asking . Ive got emphysema and ive got Follicular Lymphoma which is a form of cancer. Im missing cuddling my grandson and My Son, I Cant even touch them. Can come round here as a mercy mission, but with him working and that. And now weve got an enemy you Cant Fight. You Cant Fight an enemy you cant see. Even muhammad Ali Couldnt Box this one to the ground, could he . If he couldnt see it he couldnt have knocked it down, could he . I do worry for the future, i think everybody, mum, gran. Just because you have little kids and theyre babies and they grow up, you dont stop worrying about them when theyre six foot five, theyre still your babies and you still worry. Your mum probably worries about you, kid. People are thinking were gonna be all so different afterwards. Maybe for a while, but itll be like christmas, it will come and go again, then be back to their normal grumpy selves. Did you listen to the Queens Speech on the radio . No, i missed it. Did you want to hear it then . Go on then, lets see. Let me see if i can get it on my phone. The queen i am speaking to you at what i know is an increasingly challenging Timem Clapping and banging on drum. A time of disruption in the life of our country. Cheering and clapping. A disruption that has brought grief to some, financial difficulties to many and enormous changes to the daily lives of us all. I want to thank those of you who are staying at home, thereby helping to protect the vulnerable. I hope in the years to come, everyone will be able to take pride in how they responded to this challenge. Cheering and clapping. And those who come after us will say the britons of this generation were as strong as any. Car horns toot. Many will feel a painful sense of separation from their Loved Ones. Banging on pots and pans. But we know deep down that it is the right thing to do. We should take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return. We will be with our friends again, we will be with our families again, we will meet again. Bless her cotton socks, eh . Car horn tooting. Clapping. Im very proud of her majesty, the queen. Her words made me so emotional and it really helped me. Im so, so proud of her. So proud. And this might sound a bit ridiculous, but i always send her a christmas card, i always send her a birthday card. So. Its something i always do. People laugh, but i do. Boris johnson the virus is a spreading even faster. Than the reasonable worst Case Scenario of our scientific advisors. We must act now to contain this autumn surge. Were not going back to the full Scale Lockdown of march and april, but,. Im afraid, from thursday, the basic message is the same. Stay at home, protect i the nhs and save lives. Having the World Stop was actually magic to my ears because thats what we all need to do. Covid for me personally was a unique opportunity. So, i produce films and you get very caught up in everything that you need to do to make these films. All of my work came to a Crashing Halt and i had nothing to do except survive and look after my children. That was what needed to change. And i was like, the most important thing yeah. We gotta go. Its 2 50. Yeah, yeah. Wait, it is 2 50. And i said, yeah. 2 50 . 2 50 i gotta go work what you think about those people who live in the big houses further down 0xford gardens . Do you feel theyve got it easy compared to you . A lot of the wealthy people have left the city to live in their country home, because theyve got more Money And Theyve got more freedom that way. My fathers an investor and my mums a lawyer, so like, because the house is pretty big, like sometimes we dont even cross paths that much. Theres a Living Room with a tv, theres another Living Room, and then here its like a Media Room with, like, a projector. A gym. But those things that i probably have that they dont, from Being. From not having much money. Like what . I dont know. Laughter. Bad attitude . Yeah, illjust take it. I definitely feel very privileged to have everything that we have. During the lockdown it has definitely brought that to light. Some barely have even a balcony to step out on, and we dont take it for granted. Like, im very grateful for that. Yeah. Reporter the House Of Commons has approved the four Week Lockdown in england. People Cant Mix with other households in homes or in private gardens,. But meeting one person from another household in A Public Space is allowed. Boris johnson as prime. Minister, when im confronted with data that protects deaths in the second wave potentially exceeding those of the first, im not prepared to take the risk with the lives of the british people. Ive never known a time where we could alljust agree that for the sake of preserving lives we are happy to give up so much, so quickly. At the moment, were putting saving lives first which is absolutely right, but, if this goes on for much longer, i think there will have to come a point where we think, 0k, some of these freedoms that people are foregoing at the moment, theyre too precious there are certain industries that are Face To face, entertainment and performers and things like that, theyre all out of work. Theres no end in sight. Its so hard for people in the jobs that need to be done Face To face. And i do think there will come a point where people willjust get, you know, they lose their patience with this. Ive been a bit low this week because ive had no work. Im owing on all my bills at the moment. Last week been announced that back to six people gatherings, because id just just started getting real time parties again. Its all been taken away. Ive got to accept where im at and not let it get me down too much. You have to face your own inner demons, in a way, and a lot of internal fears, actually, that ive really had to start acknowledging. cause i had a quite unhappy childhood, actually, i think thats why i do what i do because its a way of reliving my own childhood and doing better this time around. I want to give Children Joy because i think its really important, and i didnt have as much of that as i would have liked. But. So i start crying. Reporter there were 33,470 new Coronavirus Infections recorded in the uk in the latest 24 hour period. Thats a record number. The average number of new cases per day in the past week is now 23,857. I like worrying about things and i started up this worry when the apocalypse comes, the zombie apocalypse, and i keep on thinking that im gonna be just with my friends and were gonna have to raid all the malls, take everything we need. It was really hard for victoria to get his head around a concept of something that made everybody so ill, and, not just ill but dying every day, whos dying . How many people have died . Being afraid of dying and this concept of something thats in the air, thats everywhere we touch, that we cant see but is deadly, and its such a bizarre concept for us to get our heads around. Now all he talks about are pandemics and apocalypse and what he can do. Like, well have to go and live on the top floor because the zombies will come, because he is worried about everything, hes worried about the house falling down, about the , which is not normal. But their imagination is is so wild. Its made some people really scared. I do actually remember thinking at the beginning of this, ive had my life more or less and if it came to it and i was given a choice and it was saving somebody younger, i would actually say, yeah, ive had my life. Everythingll fall to bits, i think were like cars, you know, my big end might drop off and my steering wheels may go, my tyres may puncture, but as long as the motor keeps running, which i think of as my brain, and im hoping ill get there. I want to hug my family, and just feel close to them again. Just sad to miss touch. Its got to be physical contact and everybody, well, lots of us will be missing that. Ifeel like My Son has been taken off me. And i hope im going to get christmas i think people are all waiting to be told what to do and i think the powers that be are afraid to say the wrong thing. Boris johnson given the early evidence we have, it is with a very heavy heart i must tell you we cannot continue with christmas as planned. Those living in tier four areas should not mix with anyone outside their own household at christmas. I know how important it is for families to be together. Were sacrificing the chance to see our Loved Ones this christmas so we have a better chance of protecting their lives so we can see them at future christmases. I was with Mum And Dad l and they were having a bit of an afternoon tip. Boris comes on and i woke them gently and i said do you want. The Bad News or do you want the Bad News . Theres no good news. Christmas is effectively cancelled. She got quite emotional. It didnt really hit her. 86 years old. She just wants her family with her at christmas, i like Everyone Elsel wants their family. Now were beginning to really see what the Word Sacrifice really means. Everybody s christmases are just done for, arent they . The fact that were in tier four, whatever the heck that is, by This Time Next Year theres probably gonna be a tier ten. Chuckles. Sorry, its just appalling, the whole things appalling. I cant wait for this year to be over. Its like a never ending dream. The best bit of News Weve had so far are the hopes of the vaccine. The more people that get vaccinated the better and that is going to be the most effective way of trying to get that light at The End of the tunnel, because thats hope. I mean, full enough, im determined to enjoy christmas this year, i dont care. Ive made my mind up. Happy christmas. Boris johnson were now rolling out the biggest Vaccination Programme in our history. The pace of vaccination is accelerating. That will eventually enable us to lift many of the restrictions we have endured for so long. Its behind me now, and it must have been bad because i want to forget it, i think but youve had the vaccine . Oh, yes. Im glad ive had it. But it did give me a sense of Thank God for that. I forced my grandson to give me a hug. Laughs. Hes14 and not happy Being hugged by old grannies are they, when theyre 14, for goodness sake. Its like it never happened. Its kind of like i the world paused. We became a real buddies. It made you realise how nice it is to have gone through the whole pandemic, you know, with somebody who you actually really enjoy, whose company. Ijust got a bit bored of you. Yeah, did you get bored of me . I had you for six months then i had you for another year. I i know, its like, now hes like, now im cringe. Its been an incredible journey, hasnt it . Where do we go from here . And thats very, very valid question we need to ask. We need to build up the confidence again. Its one thing that this epidemic has resulted in, is a lot of people are very timid and scared to go near other people. We need to rediscover that again, we need that Human Contact again. And this is, ive talked about them so many times, and this is my Mum And Dad. Theyre going to kill me for this, you know that. My mum, marcella, and my dad, guy. I had my second vaccine 7 April and so did my parents. Just to have my family protected in this way is quite overwhelming, it really is. Oh, my goodness me. I just. Its been an absolute pleasure talking to you and meeting you and, you know, I Ijust cant believe where the time has gone. Its gone quickly. Hello. The Weather Hasnt been changing in a hurry over recent days because weve got a big area of slow moving High Pressure in control at the moment. This was the scene as the Sun Set on Saturday Evening in norfolk. Some clear skies around, bit of patchy cloud here and there, and as we head through the next 24 hours or so, it is remaining largely dry for much of the uk. More sunny spells on sunday, but we will have a little bit more cloud drifting in, and thats because although weve got the High Pressure in charge, the winds are rotating around that High Pressure. Theyll start to come in from more of a northerly direction, dragging a bit more cloud across parts of scotland, north east england, into Northern Ireland at times, too. Still a bit of brightness breaking through here, particularly anywhere west of higher ground. Further south across england and wales, youre more likely to see longer spells of sunshine on sunday. Still quite a breeze across East Anglia and the southeast, just taking the edge off the temperatures here. Generally around 15 18 around that east coast, but further west, were likely to see highs of about 22 degrees or so towards the cardiff region, for instance. Into the evening hours, most of us end the day on a dry note. Just one or two showers not far away from the southeast. There could be a bit more cloud pushing in here as well. Most places dry once again as we head through into monday. Not quite as cold as recent nights because of more Cloud Acting as a blanket, so just about staying in double figures as we head through into monday, which is a Bank Holiday across much of the uk. So, High Pressure still with us as we head into monday. Spot the difference here weve got the winds coming in again from the North Sea, so dragging in more cloud on monday, particularly for eastern areas. The cloud thick enough for the Odd Spot of drizzle and a bit of low cloud bringing some fog around the coast as well. Best of any sunshine on monday probably for the southwest of england, towards wales as well, but almost everywhere saying largely dry. You will notice that wind, particularly around east coasts of scotland, Eastern England as well, but lighter winds further west and temperatures probably a degree or so down on sunday. Were looking at highs of about 15 21 degrees on monday. Now, the rest of the week, not much change once again. Into tuesday, very similar to what well see on monday some sunshine in the west again, especially for parts of Northern Ireland, perhaps into wales as well. Cloudier and cooler with that breeze coming in off the North Sea towards the east. So, 16 or 17 in the east, 18 or 19 towards the west on tuesday, and then spot the difference, really, for the week ahead. High pressure keeping things largely dry, sometimes a little cool for the time of year. Bye bye. This is Bbc News welcome if youre watching here in the uk or around the globe. Our top stories.
