Toughest neighborhoods. Hello and welcome if youre watching in the uk or around the world. Us president Joe Biden has issued a fresh warning that another attack on Kabul Airport is highly likely in the next 2a to 36 hours. On thursday, the islamic State Group in afghanistan killed as many as 170 people, including 13 us Military Personnel. On friday, us airstrikes killed two High Profile is members in a drone attack. The taliban has condemned the airstrike, describing it as a clear attack on afghan territory. The bbc s Nomia Iqbal in washington gave more details on President Biden s warning. He gave a statement earlier today. He was actually giving a briefing on another issue but of Course Afghanistan is still an ongoing crisis here and he was asked about that strike that happened last night confirming the details of that, but he also said that the strike was not the last. He said, i will quote to you, we will continue to hunt down any person involved in that heinous attack and make them pay, and he said his commanders had informed him that an attack is highly likely in the next 2a to 36 hours. Last week, on wednesday, there was this alert made about an imminent attack and we saw those horrific scenes on thursday, so they are taking this incredibly seriously. He did Go On to say that they are continuing to get civilians out of the country, because of course it has made the mission even more dangerous because at the same time you have the us embassy telling us citizens not to go to the airport, but they are still very confident that they can get people out on time. But they are mindful of this ongoing risk and as i said there, Mr Biden has not ruled out striking Isis K again. The uks 20 year Military Operation in afghanistan has now ended. The last british troops have flown out of Kabul Airport, following the final Evacuation Flight for civilians earlier in the day. Heres our diplomatic correspondent caroline hawley. Heading home. 1,000 british troops were sent into kabul to get people out. Us troops provided security for an unprecedented international rescue mission. The last british Plane Carrying civilians flew out of kabul this morning. This evening, news that the last soldiers and british diplomats have now left. In all, there were over 100 raf flights. The end of a 20 Year Campaign that was not supposed to finish like this. Weve done an extraordinaryjob to evacuate as many as we have, but im afraid its absolutely that heartbreaking that we cant bring everybody out, and that point has been made very strongly, certainly by the Defence Secretary and others over the last ten days or so. Personally, ive probably had over 100 messages from different afghans who i know in my long association with the country, and many of those, friends of mine, wont make it out. And for me, not a day passes without me having a bit of a tear in my eye about all of that. Day after day, british personnel have been processing afghans desperate to escape. Altogether, more than 15,000 people have been brought out by the raf, british nationals and afghans whod worked with the uk, along with theirfamilies. But hundreds have not been able to reach the airport, afghans whose lives are now at grave risk. Its time to close this phase of the operation now, but we havent forgotten the people who still need to leave. Well continue to do everything we can to help them. Nor have we forgotten the brave, decent people of afghanistan. They deserve to live in peace and security. The government has suggested that afghans who are eligible to come to the uk make their way to third countries to be processed, but it could be impossibly dangerous trying to get through taliban checkpoints. And other than calling for safe passage, theres nothing the uk can do to help from afar. At Raf Brize Norton this morning, british soldiers arriving back on uk soil. Over the past 20 years, more than 100,000 british troops served in afghanistan. A57 british lives were lost. The mission began by ousting the taliban from power. It ends with a rush, to a timetable dictated by the militants. Britains Military Personnel have done theirjob, but this is a bitter homecoming. Caroline hawley, Bbc News. Emotional things being said by conservative politicians who have served in afghanistan, one talked about his Anger And Shame that people had been Left Behind and today, the chief of the defence forces, sir nick carter, said its brought a tear to his eyes that some of the friends he had worked late in afghanistan had not cut out either. 0ver Afghanistan had not cut out either. Over the coming days, it is going to be time for reflection and time to look back on achievements and challenges that Uk And Western Forces have had in the last 20 years. The immediate focus now will be on how the people who have been Left Behind can be helped to be processed. There are many, many questions unanswered at this stage for example, where will the processes be set up . What kind of documentation will they need . They cannot definitively answer those questions. The us operation is due to end in afghanistan by tuesday. White house officials say the next few days are likely to be the most dangerous since the evacuation began. 0ur correspondent, secunder kermani, reports from kabul where Fear And Tension remain. Gunfire. 0utside Kabul Airport, Warning Shots ring out. Since thursdays awful Suicide Bombing by the local branch of the islamic State Group, the crowds here have grown smaller, but some still remain. Tens of thousands have been evacuated, these afghans escorted by the taliban. Others, however, are being Left Behind. Like this Pizza Shop Ownerfrom essex. He travelled to kabul to help try and take his afghan national wife and young children home. They said, stay away from the airport and stay in a safe place. And from today, i kept calling and sending E Mails and nobody answered. The is attack on the airport has left many fearing there could be further bloodshed. The united states announced it killed two key is operatives in a Drone Strike in the east of the country. Back in kabul, the streets are quieter than usual. Many are struggling to cope financially, with banks closed for nearly two weeks now. This is one of a handful of Cash Machines still working. Were not begging Bank Staff to give us money, this is our own money. We have family, we have children. If we dont have money, how should we prepare for my family . Translation when i see what has become of the country, i feel its impossible to live here. Everythings becoming more expensive. I feel like im suffocating. The taliban swept into kabul unexpectedly easily. But governing the city and the rest of the country is likely to be a far bigger challenge. The group says it will take time for life to stabilise. One of the few businesses not complaining this taliban member selling flags. Others are still anxiously waiting to see what life under their rule will look like. Secunder kermani, Bbc News, kabul. Stacie pettyjohn is senior Fellow And Director of of the Defence Programme at the centre for a new american security. I asked her how difficult it will be for the us to carry out more strikes in afghanistan. Very difficult for the united states to continue to monitor the situation in Afghanistan And Conduct Air Strikes from over the horizon. It is going to require either over flight rights from Pakistan Or Base access in central asia. Neither of which seem particularly forthcoming at the moment, which is why it looks like the united states is trying to launch as many strikes as they can right now to ensure that It Retaliates for the attack on the airport and also to make sure that President Biden doesnt look weak as the united states withdraws from the country. It does put the us in a very difficult position, doesnt it . It is beholden in a way to the taliban now if it wants to do much work in afghanistan. It is beholden to the taliban but even more than the taliban, if it is willing to ignore them, if the united states decides the taliban is not fulfilling its end of the bargain and keeping a lid and preventing terrorist groups are flourishing in its territory, it still needs agreements from other countries to help it so that its forces can operate over afghanistan. Hopefully, the situation will turn out that the taliban will actually contain terrorist groups are not allow them to have a sanctuary and to plan and Launch Attacks on their soil. When President Biden confirmed that the deadline was not going to go beyond august the 31st, he said we went in not for Nation Building but to stop terrorism. If terrorism flourishes, it becomes politically very difficult for him to have pulled out in the money that the us has done. Absolutely. It starts to look like a worse situation than what happened in iraq when the united states left because it could not reach an agreement with the iraqi government in 2011 that allowed its troops to stay and then had to return in 2014 after isis had overrun much of the country and was threatening baghdad. Finally, we had intelligence before thursdays attack, the attack very, very sadly happened. Now President Biden telling us today that he expects another attack on Kabul Airport in the next 36 hours. Many people will wonder why such an Attack Cant be prevented. Its incredibly difficult to stop terrorist attacks. We have seen this through the decades of operations in Afghanistan And Iraq and other locations. Even when we have ground forces that are patrolling and monitoring and controlling the streets, and in this situation we dont, the United States Forces have withdrawn to the airport, they are not out there actively patrolling. Even if they were, the reason they resort to terrorism is it is very effective and it is very difficult to counter without a very large presence and a lot of active operations. Hurricane ida has intensified over the warm waters of the Gulf Of Mexico as it heads for the us coast. Tens of thousands of people in louisiana have fled for safety. Some roads are at a virtual standstill. The us national Hurricane Center says ida is likely to be an extremely dangerous major hurricane when it makes landfall in louisiana. The storm has hit western cuba, with Heavy Rain and high winds, but its expected to strengthen as it approaches the Gulf Coast of the united states. Alessandra jerolleman is a Senior Fellow at Tulane University in New Orleans. Shes in the Diaster Resilience Leadership academy there. Shejoins me live. Alessandra is a louisiana resident, currently evacuated to arkansas. Thank you very much forjoining us today. Tell us what you are doing right now and the efforts to try to help people who want to leave louisiana . Thank you for having me. Right now one of the things that is happening across the state is a lot of information going out to individuals, the governor and other elected officials as well as local emergency managers, trying to make sure that people are taking the final steps they can, whether they are evacuating or preparing to shelter in place. Many parts of the estate are being strongly encouraged to evacuate. Unfortunately, the intensification of this storm was too rapid for some of the Evacuation Plan is to be put into place and so itll be more difficult for some people to leave than if we had more time to prepare. For people to leave than if we had more time to prepare time to prepare. For those who arent able time to prepare. For those who arent able to time to prepare. For those who arent able to leave, time to prepare. For those who arent able to leave, how time to prepare. For those who arent able to leave, how much i arent able to leave, how much danger at The End . I would say there are a lot of factors that come into play. The very dangerous storm and it looks into a drop a lot of water enough that we could see Street Flooding and the pumps overwhelmed. It is dependent on pumps to help push some of that water out and they can only pent out so much water at a time. We saw with the most recent update from the national hurricane centre, the trike might have shifted east to it and itll be worse for New Orleans. There is a much larger region around New Orleans that is even more at risk. The coastal areas that are below the city, the storm is expected to hit, and that is an area where there is a lot of very immediate risk to life. Individuals who are instructed in flood prone areas, individuals who are in older structures or Mobile Homes that have the greatest risk but that a substantial risk from the winds and flooding and also the tornadoes that large hurricanes can create. It is 16 ears large hurricanes can create. It is 16 years this large hurricanes can create. It is 16 years this weekend since Hurricane Katrina struck new with devastating results. The Levees in the city were strengthened after that. How much do you think they will offer protection and mitigate some of the dreadful impacts that we saw from katrina . I think that is a question that is weighing heavily on many peoples minds right now. I will say there have been substantial efforts to strengthen both the Levees themselves and also the management and the maintenance of the levy system. There has been a lot of expenditure in building gates, political structures to make sure maintenance was appropriate. I do feel confident those investments will pay off. However, the Levees can be over topped like any other man made engineered system. We do particularly within the city of New Orleans have a concern when there is a hurricane with enough Storm Surge and rainfalling, as i a hurricane with enough Storm Surge and rain falling, as i mentioned before it is a bowl and the water needs to be pumped out and there is so quickly that can be pumped out. Outside of the city of New Orleans, there are communities that have lesser Levees that are not part of the Mississippi River Tributary system and there are greater concerns for those communities and there are individuals who live outside the Levees. There are individuals who live outside the Levees. Thank you very much for talking outside the Levees. Thank you very much for talking to outside the Levees. Thank you very much for talking to us. Outside the Levees. Thank you very much for talking to us. We outside the Levees. Thank you very much for talking to us. We wish. Outside the Levees. Thank you very much for talking to us. We wish alli much for talking to us. We wish all the communities facing this latest hurricane the best of luck and hopefully that some of the protections put in place will help them this time. A Bank Holiday in britain on monday means this weekend is the last long one of the summer with large crowds expected to flock to beaches and festivals. But there are concerns about rising covid 19 Infection Rates and public Health Officials in some areas are calling on holidaymakers to take lateral Flow Tests before setting off on their travels in the uk. Phillip norton reports from scarborough in the north of england. Ice creams and sandcastles with a strong message of hands, face, space, and take a test. The temperature was well into the 20s in scarborough today, the first Bank Holiday weekend in england since coronavirus restrictions were lifted. Ive got one vaccination. Youre doubled, arent you . Im double vaccinated as well, yeah. We take all the precautions that we can. And we know that sun is good for everybody, so its nice to get out and about. Yeah, its good for him. Weve missed, well, for the last, is it 18 months . 18 months, you know, its a long time. So yeah, we have missed it. But, you know, were loving it now, so thats what counts. Like many areas, north Yorkshire Council has asked visitors to take a lateral Flow Test before coming to resorts and if they found they were busy, to consider going elsewhere. But in the South West of england, that message has been taken even further. Infection rates in Devon And Cornwall have spiked, and with a number of festivals taking place and a busy holiday season, extra Government Support and testing is being provided from monday. Elsewhere, thousands of Music Fans are enjoying the reading and leeds festivals, where theres also a chance to grab a jab. We want to take every opportunity to get as many people vaccinated as possible. Especially at the moment, we are targeting the younger Age Group and where better than to come than to a place like this where the majority of the population is under 20, under 30 . Festival fun and busy beaches. Health officials are hoping the stay Safe Message has been taken on board. Philip norton, Bbc News, scarborough. To france now where large demonstrations have taken place against anti coronavirus measures. Thousands gathered in paris to protest and in the western of cities nantes and toulouse , police had to fire teargas to disperse the crowds. Its reported a further Two Hundred protests took place across france. Many oppose the compulsory vaccination that will apply to Health Workers from monday. They also object to the covid free Health Certificate thats been rolled out to more venues since its introduction injune. China has rejected accusations from President Biden that it withheld key information about how the Coronavirus Pandemic started. A us report came to no Firm Conclusion on where the virus originated but said china had hindered the investigations. China said the report lacked credibility. Now if youre a fan of strictly come dancing, especially here in the uk, you may have noticed that a number of the Television Series professional dancers are South African, including in the upcoming uk series, cameron lombard. Our Africa Correspondent Andrew Harding has been finding out why ballroom is such a hit in some of the townships poorest neighbourhoods. In the shadow of cape towns table mountain, on some of the most violent streets in the world, ballroom is booming. Down, again, down yes at a local church hall, Kim Isaacs has classes for every level. Straight . Including the occasional clumsy journalist. But the schools biggest star is cameron lombard. This was him a good few years back. Now he hasjust been picked tojoin the cast of britains strictly come dancing. I taught cameron since the age of five and he will be 21 this year. I can honestly tell you, cameron had big dreams from beginning. Anybody that knocked him down and said no, cameron, your dreams is, no, you must go study hes like, no, im going to be the dancer. Cameron, congratulations, how are you feeling . Already in london for strictly rehearsals, cameron agrees to talk from his lockdown hotel. Cape town is the most beautiful place, and it can also be a tough place to grow up, you know, because you dont get the same opportunities as other people. So it feels like youve escaped, in a way, through dance. Most definitely most definitely. Its somewhere where you can. I would say less not more of an escape, but more of a safe place. Back home in South Africa, other young dancers are hoping to follow in his footsteps. Its very much inspiring, it keeps us motivated here. These girls live in an area fought over by three rival drug gangs. Why do you dance . It keeps us away from many things, the gangsterism, i drug dealing, the abuse that happens. Sultry Saxophone Music plays. For older South Africans, ballroom has a different meaning. During the era of racial apartheid, different races were banned from mingling. Only the dance offered the occasional glimpse of freedom. We were blacks, coloureds, whites, every denomination, were all there and we just did our thing, and wejust loved gathering, having social evenings on fridays. And this was illegal. It was totally illegal. Back in london, two stars of strictlyjoin camerons call all South Africans. Its not at all, my darling, its all based on talent. So, is there a rivalry on the set between the South Africans, or are you all rooting for each other . Its love, we come from a loving country and do you get the sense, do you know whether South Africa as a whole is rooting for you or is itjust the Ballroom Enthusiasts . Its the whole country its not can ijust speak on this its actually not just the whole country because South Africa is still big, but its the whole continent. And with that comes a big. Responsibility where we know that we dontjust represent a country, we represent a whole continent. There are not a lot of dancers that are well known from Botswana Or Mozambique or zimbabwe, but they are there and nobodys talking about them. In cape town, the lessons continue. This is the moment when im supposed to say something very sensible about South Africa and Ballroom Dancing and its history, but im struggling to remember my footwork and its hard to keep track singing. Luckily we now have plenty of South African experts to show us how its done. Andrew harding, Bbc News, cape town. A reminder of one of our main Stories Tonight the last british Plane Carrying Armed Forces personnel and diplomats has taken off from Kabul Airport, ending britains 20 year Military Involvement in afghanistan. They have all left kabul. The Operation Pitting was the largest Military Evacuation since the second World War and in the last fortnight more than 15,000 people taken out of the airport there in kabul. Huge concerns for the second phase, as it has been called, and what will become of those people who wanted to leave, who were eligible to leave but were unable to. After the weather well take a look at tomorrows front pages in the papers. Do stay with us for that. Now its time for a look at the weather with sarah keith lucas. Good evening. Things are staying dry and settled for at least the next week or so with a big area of High Pressure firmly in charge of our weather. Weve got a warm, sunny day for many areas during saturday. This was the picture in leicestershire a bit earlier. We saw temperatures of 2a degrees across central parts of scotland. Sunday, a similar day, again, its going to be dry and there will be spells of sunshine but there will be more cloud drifting around, particularly in the north. Weve got an area of High Pressure that sitting out towards the North West with the winds rotating around that. Theres a breeze coming in at the moment off the north sea, so thats going to introduce a little bit more cloud across parts of North East England and eastern scotland. And then, through the course of tonight, that cloud works its way south across scotland, Northern England and Northern Ireland. Further south across england and wales, clearer skies through the night, so temperatures dipping down to perhaps seven or eight degrees in the coolest spots, but staying in double figures under the cloud further north. So, this is how we start sunday morning. We have got that cloud in the north. Still that breeze coming in from the north sea, particularly brisk for East Anglia and the South East as well. Lighter winds further west and plenty of spells of sunshine for many areas, particularly for england and wales. A little bit more cloud for scotland and Northern Ireland but there will be some breaks in that cloud, especially towards the west during the afternoon. But top temperatures around about 15 in aberdeen to perhaps 20 in glasgow, 21 in cardiff. As we head to sunday into monday, High Pressure stays out towards the North West, those winds coming in from a North Or North easterly direction. So, they will bring more cloud, particularly in the east during the day on monday, where it will be a little bit cool where youre exposed to that breeze off the north sea. So, around some of these east coasts, temperatures generally in the mid to high teens. Youll notice things feel cooler with the gusts of wind at around 30 mph for some areas. Lighter winds towards the west and it is here that youll see the best of any sunshine. The temperature is a Touch Cooler by the time we get to monday, around about 15 to 21 degrees. Things not changing in a hurry through the next few days. Tuesday, spot the difference very similar once again, dry across the board. Fairly cloudy, particularly towards the east. Best of any breaks in that cloud to be found further west on tuesday. Things dont really change much for the week ahead. Weve got High Pressure still sitting out to the north or North West, so it is looking dry. They will be spells of sunshine, temperatures generally somewhere between about 17 to 21 degrees. Bye bye. Hello. This is Bbc News with annita mcveigh. Well be taking a look at tomorrow mornings papers in a moment. First, the headlines. The us president says another attack in afghanistant is imminent.
