In the last hour, us President Biden has issued a Statement Warning that a fresh attack on Kabul Airport is highly likely in the next 24 36 hours. On thursday, the islamic State Group In Afghanistan killed as many as 170 people, including 13 us military personnel. On friday, us Air Strikes killed Two High Profile is members In A drone attack. Our correspondent in washington, nomia iqbal, gave us details of this latest warning from the us government. He gave a statement earlier today. He was actually giving a briefing on another issue but of Course Afghanistan is still an ongoing crisis here and he was asked about that strike that happened last night confirming the details of that, but he also said that the strike was not the last. He said, i will quote to you, we will continue to hunt down any person involved in that heinous attack and make them pay, and he said his commanders had informed him that an attack is highly likely in the next 2a to 36 hours. Last week, on wednesday, there was this alert made about an imminent attack and we saw those horrific scenes On Thursday, so they are taking this incredibly seriously. He did Go On to say that they are continuing to get civilians out of the country, because of course it has made the mission even more dangerous because at the same time you have the us embassy telling civilians not to go to the airport, but they are still very confident that they can get people out on time. Telling us citizens not to go to the airport. But they are mindful of this ongoing risk and as i said there, Mr Biden has not ruled out striking Isis K again. We saw how Isis K exploited the situation at Kabul Airport On Thursday, the Suicide Bomber mingling with the huge crowds there. It emphasises the volatility of the situation when governments have this intelligence, yet seem unable to stop any attack. That is right. We have seen the footage coming out of the country, we obviously have our correspondents on the ground, there is no real organisation going on, it is really hard for troops to make sense of what is happening on the ground, but he did say, and again from his statement, that he has directed commanders to try and take every measure possible to prioritise the protection of men and women on the ground. Butjust to add, just this hour we were given the full names and ages of the 13 service people that died, the us service people that died in kabul, most in their early 20s. All were children when the invasion In Afghanistan first began and that is a real Gut Punch here In America. Broadly speaking, the public Back Biting but there are concerns this mission is getting even more dangerous. The public Back Biden will stop. Well, those who were eligible to leave but have been left behind must now decide whether to stay In Afghanistan and live under taliban rule, or try to find other ways of fleeing the country. 0ur Correspondent Secunder kermani reports from kabul. 0utside Kabul Airport, Warning Shots ring out. Since thursdays awful Suicide Bombing by the local branch of the islamic State Group, the crowds here have grown smaller, but some still remain. Tens of thousands have been evacuated. These afghans escorted by the taliban. Others, however, are being left behind. Like this Pizza Shop Ownerfrom essex. Hed travelled to kabul to help try and take his afghan national wife and young children home. I got in yesterday, and they said stay away from the airport and stay In A safe place. And today, i kept calling and sending emails, but nobody answered. Elsewhere in kabul, the city remains unusually quiet. The is attack has left many fearing there could be further bloodshed. The united States Today said it killed two key is operatives In A Drone Strike in the east of the country. Everyday life in kabul is growing increasingly difficult. With banks closed for nearly two weeks now, this is one of the handful of Cash Machines still working. We are not begging the Bank Staff to give us money. This is our own money to get but we have family, we have children. If we dont have money, how should i prepare bread for my family . Translation when i see what has become of the country, i feel it is impossible to live here. Everything is becoming more expensive, i feel| like i am suffocating. The taliban swept into kabul unexpectedly easily, but governing this city and the rest of the country is likely to be a far bigger challenge. The group says it will take time for lives to stabilise. One of the few businesses not complaining, this taliban member selling flags. Others are still anxiously waiting to see what life under their rule will look like. Secunder kermani, Bbc News, kabul. This evening we have received images from the location where it is reported that the Drone Strike hit. The pictures, taken by an afghan media agency, Ariana News afghanistan, appear to show the aftermath of the us Air Strike In Afghanistans Nangahar Province that the us says resulted in the deaths of Two High Profile targets. The strike took place following the attack at Kabul Airport On Thursday which is reported to have killed at least 170 people including 13 us troops. The taliban have condemned the us airstrike, describing it as a clear attack on afghan territory. The uks last Evacuation Flight purely for civilians has left the afghan capital kabul. And this evening, these new pictures from the ministry of Defence Show soldiers departing from kabul. The Ministry Of Defence has released images of british soldiers boarding planes out of afghanistan. The us led airlift of those trying to Escape Taliban Rule is due to end on tuesday. Heres our diplomatic correspondent caroline hawley. The race to finish an unprecedented Rescue Mission is almost Done. The pentagon says more than 110,000 people have been airlifted out of the country in the past two weeks by us forces and its allies. Among the planes leaving Kabul Airport today, the last british Evacuation Flight for civilians. Weve Done an extraordinaryjob to evacuate as many as we have, but im afraid its absolutely heartbreaking that we cant bring everybody out. And i think that point s been made very strongly certainly by the Defence Secretary and others over the last ten days or so. Personally, ive probably had over 100 messages from different afghans who i know in my long association with the country, and many of those friends of Mine Wont make it out. And for me, not a day passes without me having a bit of a tear in my eye about all of that. Day after day, british personnel have been processing afghans desperate to escape. Altogether, nearly 15,000 people have been brought out by The Raf british nationals and afghans whod worked with the uk, along with theirfamilies. But hundreds have not been able to reach the airport, afghans whose lives are now at grave risk. Its time to close this phase of the operation now, but we havent forgotten the people who still need to leave. Well continue to do everything we can to help them. Nor have we forgotten the brave, decent people of afghanistan. They deserve to live in peace and security. At Raf Brize Norton this morning, british personnel arriving back on uk soil. Were told by The End of the week, the last Military Flight will have left kabul. The last soldiers and diplomats will be out. Over the past 20 years, more than 100,000 british troops served In Afghanistan. A56 british lives were lost. The mission began by ousting the taliban from power, but ends In A rush to get home on a timetable dictated by the militants. Caroline hawley, Bbc News. Stacie pettyjohn is senior Fellow And Director of the Defence Programme at the centre for a new american security. Thank you very much Forjoining Us on Bbc News and Bbc World News today. This extract was not the last, said President Biden in response to the strike on the east of afghanistan which we are told killed an iis planner and facilitator. How difficult beyond next tuesday, when there were no american boots on the ground and the taliban are absolutely in control, how difficult will it be for the us to plan it, gather the intelligence and carry out more strikes . It will be very difficult and carry out more strikes . It will be very difficult for and carry out more strikes . It will be very difficult for the and carry out more strikes . It will be very difficult for the united be very difficult for the United States to continue to monitor the situation in Afghanistan And Conduct extracts from over the horizon. It will require either overflight rights from pakistan or central asia, neither of which seems particularly forthcoming at the moment, which is why it looks like the United States is going to launch as many strikes as it can right now to ensure it retaliates for that attack on the airport and also to make sure that President Biden does not look weak as the United States withdraws from the country. Yes. Not look weak as the United States withdraws from the country. Yes, it does ut withdraws from the country. Yes, it does put the withdraws from the country. Yes, it does put the us withdraws from the country. Yes, it does put the us in withdraws from the country. Yes, it does put the us In A withdraws from the country. Yes, it does put the us In A very withdraws from the country. Yes, it does put the us In A very difficult. Does put the us In A very difficult position, because it is hoarded In A way to the taliban now if it wants to do much work In Afghanistan. It is, if the United States thinks the taliban is not fulfilling its end of the bargaIn And preventing Terrorist Groups from flourishing in its territory, it needs. Hopefully it will turn up the taliban will contain Isis K and other Terrorist Groups and not allow them to have a Century And Launch attacks from the soil. ~ , . , soil. Many people will wonder with this intelligence white such an attack cannot be prevented. It is incredibly cannot be prevented. It is incredibly difficult cannot be prevented. It is incredibly difficult To Cannot Be prevented. It 3 incredibly difficult to stop terrorist attacks, we have seen this through the decades of operations In Afghanistan and other locations, even when we have ground forces who are monitoring and controlling the streets and in this situation we do not. Presence had a lot of active Operation Presence had a lot of active oeration. , ~ i. ,. Hurricane ida has intensified over the warm waters of the Gulf Of Mexico as it heads for the us coast. Tens of thousands of people in louisiana have fled for safety. Some roads are at a virtual standstill. The us national Hurricane Center says ida is likely to be an extremely dangerous major hurricane when it makes landfall in louisiana. Earlier, i spoke to Bbc Weather Presenter sarah Keith Lucas about what we can expect from this hurricane, but before that, lets hearfrom President Biden, who has urged the people of louisiana to be ready for the storm. We have prepositioned food, water, generators and other supplies in the area. Power restoration and mobile Communication And Support teams are also en route. We have also closely coordinated with the Electric Utilities to restore power as soon as possible and support your Response And Recovery efforts. And above all, i am urging the people of the area to pay attention and be prepared. I want to say it again, pay attention and be prepared. Lets talk about this now with sarah Keith Lucas from the bbc weather centre. Where is Hurricane Ida right now and is it likely to make a direct hit on New Orleans . At the moment it is around about 300 miles just south of the North Coast of the Gulf Of Mexico, so we have already seen that storm over the past 24 hours or so. It made landfall in cuba so it had winds at that point at around about 80 miles per hour as it swept across western cuba. It is quite a fast moving storm now, it is rapidly intensifying as it moves its way northwards. What it is doing is moving over some fairly warm waters in the Gulf Of Mexico and as you were saying, it is going to be moving fairly close to New Orleans. At the moment, the Forecast Track of this storm it is moving its way North Westwards so it is likely to make landfall out to the west of New Orleans at the moment, but of course Forecast Tracks can change a little bit. Yeah, and of course the reason i mention the city is that it is 16 years ago this weekend that we saw Hurricane Katrina which caused flooding of about 80 of the city, more than 1800 people killed. Are we talking about a similar strength, a similar capacity for damage with this hurricane . We have just actually. Let me bring this line in, sarah, from the Louisiana Governor who has just said Hurricane Ida is expected to be a category four hurricane at landfall. Yes, that is right, a category four hurricane, so it will have winds of around about 130 miles per hour. To put that into context, Hurricane Katrina had winds of 175 miles per hour, so it was a stronger storm. It did weaken a little bit as it moved its way inland. This storm, Hurricane Ida, is not as big in terms of the area it covers, certainly compared to katrina. And the Storm Surge expected is not quite as large, so we saw a Storm Surge of around about 20 feet with katrina back in 2005. This storm is expected to have at its worst a Storm Surge of about 15 feet and the areas most likely to be affected are from anywhere from Morgan City in louisiana all the way to the mouth of the Mississippi River as well. To what extent can we say that Climate Change is likely to lead to more hurricanes and indeed stronger hurricanes . That is something that climate scientists are really researching at the moment, that link between our Warming World and hurricanes is still a little bit uncertain, but what we can say for sure is warmer air holds more moisture and warmer Sea Surfaces do create some more intense hurricanes. There is not necessarily going to be more hurricanes in terms of the number that we see per season, but more intense hurricanes and certainly we are likely to see more category four and category five hurricanes developing. Sport and for a full round up, from the Bbc Sport Centre heres olly foster. Hello and thanks Forjoining Us. Something had to give at anfield with Liverpool And Chelsea both looking to maintain their winning starts to the season. It finished 1 1, chelsea took the lead through a Kai Havertz Header Butjust before half time, Blues Defender Reece james was sent off for handling on the Line And Mo salah equalised from the penalty spot. Chelsea hung on for the draw against the odds but their manager didnt agree with the red card. He maybe would have changed his mind if he saw the whole situation. Moving pictures, a deflection, because i heard already explanations from referees that it is not going to be punished if it is a deflection and not a very unnatural arm position. Arsenal have made their worst start to a season in 67 years. They lost 5 0 at manchester city. Ilkay Gundogan And Ferran Torres had put city two up inside 15 minutes and arsenal went down to ten men by half time, when Granit Xhaka was sent off for serious foul play. The series now stands at 1 1 with two to play. Extremely proud and it shows the character in the dressing room, four players to be able to take a loss like that and come back and play and such a clinical performance shows a huge amount of what the group is about and it can be a difficult place, test cricket, when it is not going your way and you have to really be able to stand up and look at in the face and be ready to put yourself back out there under pressure and deliver and the group have Done that exceptionally well this week. Formula one is back from its Summer Break and Max Verstappen will be on pole for sundays belgian grand prix. Conditions were treacherous at spa, and qualifying was held up for 45 minutes after Lando Norris Lost Control of his car in the wet and crashed into barriers. It has been a really tricky course, hard to keep the car on track, hard with the tyres at the times and it is difficult to learn the track conditions again but we were first and that is the most important. With large crowds expected to flock to beaches and festivals over the Bank Holiday Weekend, there are concerns about rising Covid Infection rates. Public Health Officials in some areas are calling on Holiday Makers to take lateral Flow Tests before travelling. Phillip norton reports from scarborough. The Scottish Green Party will enter government after its membership overwhelmingly backed a Power Sharing Agreement with the snp. This approval means the deal, which promises action on transport, renewables and tenants rights, will now be put into action. Both parties also want another independence referendum. Our Scotland Political Correspondent David Wallace Lockhart reports. The scottish green Co Leaders all smiles after their membership gave a Power Sharing Agreement with the snp overwhelming approval. This makes for an 83 Approval Vote and we do not expect that percentage to change. The Co Leaders are now set to become scottish government ministers. We are not in parliament just to shout insults or try and score points. We are there to help solve problems and to make a difference and i think this will be more of the same, developing a cooperative Programme Ofjoint Policy to make a difference to the lives of people in scotland and start to take serious action on the climate crisis. Though most members likely deal, not all are sold on it. The main reason i voted no was because of local authorities, im a local councillor and was really concerned that this deal did not have enough in it to try and ensure that local authority budgets and services were protected. However, i hope the Party Leadership has got that message. Opposition parties sound even more sceptical. This isjust confirming what we already know, the greens work with the snp, it is a continuation of that. This is a cynical deal in which the nationalist parties |are prioritising their obsession| with separation over the things that we should be looking at, so our economic and social recovery and indeed the climate emergency. But the parties involved are on board, with snp members also signalling an emphatic support. This deal will now be put into action and these two will enter government. China has rejected accusations from President Biden that it withheld key information about how the Coronavirus Pandemic started. A report by us intelligence came to no Firm Conclusion as to where the virus originated but did say that china had as to where the virus originated. Now its time for a look at the weather with sarah Keith Lucas. Good evening. Things are staying dry and settled for at least the next week or so with a big area of High Pressure firmly in charge of our weather. We have got a warm, sunny day for many areas during saturday. This was the picture in leicestershire a bit earlier. We saw temperatures of 24 degrees across central parts of scotland. Sunday, a similar day, again, its going to be dry and there will be spells of sunshine but there will be more cloud drifting around, particularly in the north. Weve got an area of High Pressure that sitting out towards the North West with the winds rotating around that. There is a breeze coming In At the moment off the north sea, so thats going to introduce a little bit more cloud across parts of North East England and eastern scotland. And then through the course of tonight, that cloud works its way south across scotland, Northern England and Northern Ireland. Further south across england and wales, clearer skies through the night so temperatures dipping down to perhaps seven or eight degrees in the coolest spots, but staying in double figures under the cloud further north. So this is how we start sunday morning, we have got that cloud in the north. Still that breeze coming in from the north sea, particularly brisk for East Anglia and the South East as well. Lighter winds further west and plenty of spells of sunshine for many areas, particularly for england and wales. A little bit more cloud for scotland and Northern Ireland but there will be some breaks in that cloud, especially towards the west during the afternoon. But top temperatures around about 15 In Aberdeen to perhaps 20 in glasgow, 21 in cardiff. As we head to sunday into monday, High Pressure stays out towards the North West, those winds coming in from a North Or North easterly direction. So they will bring more cloud, particularly in the east during the day on monday, where it will be a little bit cool where you are exposed to that breeze off the north sea. So around some of these east coasts, temperatures generally in the mid to high teens. You will notice things feel cooler with the gusts of wind at around 30 mph for some areas. Lighter winds towards the west and it is here that youll see the best of any sunshine. The temperature is a Touch Cooler by the time we get to monday, around about 15 to 21 degrees. Things not changing In A hurry through the next few days. Tuesday, spot the difference very similar once again, dry across the board. Fairly cloudy, particularly towards the east. Best of any breaks in that cloud to be found further west on tuesday. Things dont really change much for the week ahead. Weve got High Pressure still sitting out to the north or North West, so it is looking dry. They will be spells of sunshine, temperatures generally somewhere between about 17 to 21 degrees. Bye bye. Hello, this is Bbc News with annita mcveigh. The headlines the Evening President Joe Biden says another attack In Afghanistan is imminent. He expects within the next 36 hours.
