Police announce a new lead. And delayed by a year but athletes are hoping to shine the 2020 paralympics gets under way in tokyo. Good Evening And Welcome to the programme. With the united States Today refusing to budge from its deadline of August 31 for withdrawing troops from Afghanistan A G7 Virtual Summit shared by Boris Johnson appealed to the taliban to allow Safe Passage and beyond that date for anyone wants to leave. But in an hardening of tone the Taliban Today indicated they would not allow afghans to be evacuated in the us should stop encouraging afghans to go to the airport to be airlifted out. They also said that all international evacuations need to be completed by The End of the month. Lease to set reporting from kabul in the situation at the airport. Her report contained some distressing images. Stay calm, orders this taliban guard. There is no calm here. Not in a crowd too big to count, too big to control. But the days are numbered now before the us pulls its soldiers from this airfield, before their last Evacuation Flight lifts off. Panic is rising. Most afghans have waited here for days including four year old Twins Usna and usnia. Their father was a guard for the us military. Theyve got documents to prove it. Its been such a bad experience, their mother says. So bad. My children have been so scared. We are meant to leave. You can feel the fear. Its notjust the kids. Wahida faizi, an afghanjournalist, believes she is not safe under taliban rule. They know im a journalist. If they know, i know they will kill me. One day you will come back to afghanistan . Never. Its not my country. After this, its not my country. These are the last moments for afghans who feel not only are they leaving their country, they are losing it. Leaving everything behind. This is a journey like no other. The most importantjourney they are probably going to make in their lives. And it is a journey so fraught with risk and fear. Wahida faizi, in her red headscarf, keeps pushing forward. On this side british Soldiers Glance at papers. British soldiers standing guard. Doing whatever they can to contain the chaos. Translation these americans are inexperienced. They asked the people to come in a very short time. They made this rush of people. This is the mismanagement of The Americans, and nothing else. And at a News Conference Today an even starker message. My message to The Americans is they should evacuate all the citizens by the deadline of august to 31st. They have the resources, they have the planes and the airport and they should evacuate all the forces and contractors and those belonging to them. We will no longer allow them to evacuate afghans. In the heart of kabul behind another gate, another place of hardship and heartache. Families displaced by fighting. They are also on the move, now the taliban have taken control they boarding buses to take them back to the north. This man was injured there in a gunfight. Translation i want to go back home, lwe do not have stood here and i have. Not been able to get treatment for my arm. A nation ruled by war, people pushed from their homes. Afghanistans Long War turns another corner but No One knows yet where it will lead. Meanwhile at the g7 meeting the us faced calls from European Leaders to maintain troops in afghanistan. You keep saying taliban should say open to help those trying to leave for the german chancellor said their lives could not continue without the us. A deputy political editor Vicki Young has more. This is an Emergency Tens Of Thousands being taking for your Safety Photo but many wont make it out. Mrjohnson. The british government had pleaded for more time. But thats been rejected by the taliban and The American president. Leaders from the worlds richest nation had a lot to talk about, 20 years of Military Action in afghanistan are ending in chaos. A borisjohnson is keen to boss the eight laws of the diplomatic differences. We got together and agreed Notjust A Joint approach to dealing with the evacuation but also a Road Map for the way in which we are going to engage with the taliban. The Number One condition engage with the taliban. The Number One condition that engage with the taliban. The Number One condition that we engage with the taliban. The Number One condition that we are insisting i one condition that we are insisting upon is Safe Passage beyond the sist, upon is Safe Passage beyond the 31st, beyond this initial phase for those who want to leave afghanistan. In the coming months we will find out how much economic and political Influence G7 countries can exert in a troubled region these families have left behind. 0ur Afghanistan Correspondent Secunder Kermani is In Kabul and has more on what the taliban have been saying. Those comments raising real concern of course. Ive been speaking to one of course. Ive been speaking to one of their spokesman and whos telling me that what they meant was that those afghans who dont have the right documents, they cant go. But those who do still can. He also said the group, the taliban are not in favour of afghans leaving the country. This is really adding to the fears of those who are trying to fly out. That doing so after The End of this month is going to be even more difficult. The taliban clearly do not like the images that we are seeing coming out from the airport. They are saying that they want to project an image of stability. They want to show that the afghan people are with them. The desperation we seen at the airport clearly undermines that. Theyre also commencing at the Press Conference about female government employees not being allowed to go back to their offices, a extensively temporarily on the base of security. Thats the justification to prevent women working completely. Confusingly though ive also spent some timejust confusingly though ive also spent some time just recently in the kabul males. Net Mayors Office they are they are actively encouraging female employees go back to work and indeed some have done so. All of this adding to an air of deep uncertainty about what the future holds for afghans. Thank you very much for coming on the programme. Lots of developments today. First of all, what is your Reaction to this idea of the deadline, The End of the month that it doesnt seem like that is going to budge. What you make of that decision . Im is going to budge. What you make of that decision . That decision . Im very disappointed. That decision . Im very disappointed. I that decision . Im very disappointed. I know i that decision . Im very i disappointed. I know lots that decision . Im very disappointed. I know lots of that decision . Im very disappointed. I know lots of people other two are. Ive been having conversations with people are still trying to get their interpreters and so forth out for that what were going to see now clearly is a mad rush in these last few days and who knows what the Title Couple of days is going to look like. I suspect its going to be more chaotic. As to say, what im thinking as im watching all of this unfold of the last couple weeks in particular, i joined the military in 1967 about the commission in 1971, served during the Cold War and we came out of the Cold War and we moved into that. Where there was this Wishful Thinking that liberal democracy, capitalism and so forth, western values would rule the world. Communism would be gone, The End of history and all that sort of stuff. We then hit that. In the 90s at The Break Up of yugoslavia, tony Blairs Speech in 1999 and a responsibility to protect and the idea that we were going to go Around The World making everybody, look after people and so on and so forth. We are coming to The End. What we are watching now is The End. What we are watching now is the and of i think 30 years of western strategic policy which is gone completely wrong. Far too much Wishful Thinking, lacking in leadership. I think us Foreign Policy and the execution of it having lived through baghdad in 2003 and been involved in the balkans, this is a really important time. I am just depressed, Set Up, irritated, angry that we are watching western values being pushed back for the plato, g7, not being able to talk to the taliban. That is in absolutely able to talk to the taliban. That is in absolutely damning able to talk to the taliban. That is in absolutely damning verdict on i in absolutely damning verdict on notches recent events but obviously the last few decades. You mentioned the last few decades. You mentioned the g7. Borisjohnson saying he wants assurances as the rest of those nations that the taliban must offer a Safe Passage for people after The End of this month to leave afghanistan safely. Do you think thats realistic now . Ida. Afghanistan safely. Do you think thats realistic now . Afghanistan safely. Do you think thats realistic now . No. I would be very surprised thats realistic now . No. I would be very surprised. The thats realistic now . No. I would be very surprised. The obvious very surprised. The obvious question is, what are you gonna do about it they dont . There are leaders, there are financial leaders, clearly. And are financial leaders, clearly. And a lot of people have been talking about those of the last few days. But if im honest, ifind it difficult to listen to a Prime Minister talking about our commitment to afghanistan, the Number One conditioned guarantee Safe Passage that will connect consider doing that continue to operate, etc. Underthe umbrella consider doing that continue to operate, etc. Under the umbrella of a global britain, under the umbrella of all the talk over the last year or so. Of all the talk over the last year orso. It of all the talk over the last year or so. It is pretty depressing. The world will go on turning but what the messages that we are sending to the messages that we are sending to the chinese issues like iran but like taiwan, to the russians of the east and eastern European Countries ukraine and so on, that message were sending to the other dictators in authoritarian regimes Around The World is that if America And Nato and the G7 Cannot Stand Up to the Taliban And Extract ourselves from this sort of operation in good order then wevejust this sort of operation in good order then weve just lost credibility. It will take a long time to regain it. Thank you for coming on the programme. We will find out how this story and many others are being covered in tomorrows front pages. In tomorrows front pages at 10 30 and 11 30 this evening in the papers our guestsjoining me tonight Tsongas Soda and Allie Barrage eight, 28 columnist for the article. Breaking news that we are receiving from the White House in relation to afghanistan and that deadline. August the 31st many of the G7 Leaders asking for that to be pushed back. Weve had it now from the White House a spokesperson for the White House a spokesperson for the White House saying that look pretty unlikely, to be honest. We are currently on pace to finish by August The 31st and provided an update on progress and evacuating of americans who want to come home, third country nationals and afghans who are our allies during the war one caveat to this readout from the White House saying the president has asked the pentagon and the State Department for contingency plans. They call them to adjust the time i should that become necessary. But very much the top line of the statement by the Press Secretary saying we confirmed that we are currently on pace to finish that mission in afghanistan by august the sist. The latest Virus'>Government CoronaVirus figures, show there were 30,838 new infections recorded in the latest 24 hour period, which means on average there were 33,550 new cases per day, in the last week. Yesterday there were almost Seven Thousand people in hospital with the Virus. 174 deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours, with an average of 101 deaths a day in the past week. 0n vaccinations, almost 88 of adults in the uk have now had their firstjab and just over 77 have had two. The number of people dying with coronaVirus in the uk is at its highest level since The End of march. According to the office for national statistics, 652 deaths were registered in the week to the 13th of august. Mps have been warned that the nhs is facing a Perfect Storm this winter, as Staff Absences increase, and some consider leaving the health service. Our health correspondent, nick triggle, has thiS Assessment of the situation. Eight months ago we were talking about how Infection Rates were falling. Its now clear that they are climbing back up. Albeit gradually. The Infection Rates over the past seven days, they are 13 higher than the previous seven days. We had a whole week now where more than 30,000 new infections a day have been recorded. And thats nearly 30 higher than it was at the start of august. What i would say is the model in england we locked on the model in england we locked on the 19th Ofjuly and the other slightly later, when that happened the modeller said we were always likely to see this Ebb And Flow during the summer. Cases rising and then falling, rising and falling. And what was crucial is what happens in september when children return to school, maybe people start returning back to the offices in the Holiday Season ends and normal Contact Pattern start returning. And thats what i think all the governments are now going to be looking at is whether cases rise continuously in september. September of course is when you start to see flu perhaps beginning to circulate in those Autumn And Winter pressures bills. When we look at the numbers of people dying, as you mentioned, the Numbers Today reported today are high, 174 deaths but the delays in reporting over the weekend mean that tuesdays we will tend to see a higherfigure. If we tuesdays we will tend to see a higher figure. If we look at the average number of deaths over the past week we are now averaging more than 100 deaths a day. That was a figure that the government scientists said we were likely to reach by this stage. So we are very much where we expected to be. The question now is where we go next. Scotlands first minister Nicola Sturgeon has said she Cant Rule out the reintroduction of some covid restrictions, after the number of daily cases reached a record high. More than 4,300 cases were reported today, surpassing the previous highest level which was in earlyjuly. 0ur Scotland Correspondent Lorna Gordon reports. 0ne after the other, scots are still being vaccinated. Until today it is making a big difference but also a warning that cases are on the rise again and concern is growing that new controls are not being ruled out. If this search continues and accelerates and if we start to see evidence of a substantial increase in serious illness as a result we cannot completely rule out having to re impose some restrictions. Half of scotlands new covered cases are nearly 25 is. Around a third are in people who have been double dosed. In numbers was predicted but this is being described as a fragile and pivotal moment in the pandemic. We expected Case Numbers to rise and we expected a sharp rise when things like schools returned and testing increased. But there is an underlying trend upwards in Case Numbers in Scotland And Weve seen that in the past two or three weeks. By law you still have to wear a mask here in scotland in indoor public settings such as shops on public transport. But aside from that most legal restrictions have now been lifted. And all of us, Nicola Sturgeon said, had been letting our Behaviour Drift back to normal. So if some restrictions wait to return . Restrictions coming back and would be quite tough because just got back especially with nightlife going into pubs and bars. If people are in danger i suppose it is going to be for the best. We have to live with it, it is causing strain on the nhs. A Campaign Group made up of families of those who died from covid welcomed news that a public enquiry into how the crisis was handled will be held. This on a day that weve all been reminded that this pandemic is far from over. Northern ireland has also recently experienced Record Case numbers. Health officials are particularly concerned that not enough people under 40 have been vaccinated. A man whose 35 year old wife died shortly after giving birth has made a plea for pregnant women to get a vaccine. 0ur Ireland Correspondent Chris Page reports a wife, a mother, a care worker. The death of Samantha Willis has left a huge gap in many lives. I love her, i miss her, i will never forget her. She will be in our hearts. The main thing is to make her proud. Samantha never got to hold her fourth child. Evi grace was born two weeks ago when her mother was already in hospital seriously ill with covid 19. Yesterday Evi Grace was baptised. During samanthas funeral service. I was standing at the Graveside Yesterday i could just hear her telling me in my head, thats it, im gone. Battle on, raise the wee ones, to what you have to do. We have no choice. If it was the other way around she would have to do the same and i would probably be telling her the same. The covid Summer Surge has been particularly strong in Northern Ireland. The Case Rate is currently 90 per 100,000 people, the highest of the uk four nations by far. The Death Rate is also presently the worst in the uk. Although it is four times lower than at the peak of the pandemic. Part of the reason for the alarming figures is that fewer people have come forward for a first Vaccine Dose than in england, scotland or wales. We do see that Vaccine Uptake is lower in areas of greater Social Deprivation and compared with the rest of the uk, Northern Ireland does have significantly more deprivation. Some parts of Northern Ireland have been relatively spared from the Virus during earlier waves and we are now seeing much higher levels of Virus in those areas. Thousands responded to a big appeal to getjabbed at the weekend. The largest Vaccination Centres are now being dismantled but Walk In clinics are being Set Up to target specific areas with a low uptake. Vaccines have kept Hospital Admissions is a much lower level than in previous waves. Samantha willis had not been vaccinated. Whoever wants to send out a message. I think she would want pregnant people to get it. I just want to make a proud and i think she would want they story to be told and if she could save one person or one family that is enough. Josh willis ending that report from Chris Page. Josh willis there, ending that report from Chris Page. Im joined now by gerry waldron, assistant director of Public Health at Northern Irelands Public Health agency. 0s we had some distressing strays there. What do you think is behind us reason why our infections are so much higher in Northern Ireland . It is threefold, really, its three things together. We heard about the Vaccination Rates which is concerning, particularly in the younger people. Secondly, it is in line with easing of restrictions, and people meeting and going out and coming into contact with more people, and thirdly, equally important, is the delta variant, which is much more transmissible than any other so that he take all these things together they create a Perfect Storm its a bit like that. Does three factors are applicable across the uk, what particular do you think is going on at the moment . Absolutely you are quite right. Plus we have in Northern Ireland that difference from the rest of the uk is in terms of the demographics weve got a much younger population, and youve already heard professor young Mention Deprivation as well. There are two particular issues. We have a higher proportion of younger people. Apart from that fact that the rates in younger people are lower than in older people, we started off with those most at risk, and then the older people who had very good uptake rates there, but as we are breaking down the garys trades lower Age Groups, the uptake Rates Havent as rewarding as the older ones. We had the big weekend on saturday and sunday. 12,000 had theirfirst saturday and sunday. 12,000 had their first dose of the beacon. Thats very encouraging but we are not stopping there. We have Pop Up Clinics going in where the uptake is low, so it is going to be a conservative plush, and it has been a conservative place, and we have been doing everything in our power to get in touch with people. But putting the message out, there is a lot of misInformation out there, and we have been doing our best to counteract that. The 35 year old chef failed to arrive for work at York University on the 18th Of March arrive for work at York University on the 18th Of March 2009. Police believe she on the 18th Of March 2009. Police believe she was on the 18th Of March 2009. Police believe she was murdered, believe she was murdered, despite her body never being found. Danny savage has the latest. Claudia lawrence, a 35 year old chef who vanished in york 12 and a half years ago. Police believe she was murdered despite her body never being found. Today, in arguably the most significant development since she disappeared, police started searching Gravel Pits in countryside, six and a half miles from where she was last seen alive. While im unable to disclose what brought us to this location, i would like to stress that the searches you will see in the coming days are just one of several active lines of inquiry being investigated and the north Yorkshire Police Investigation Team in our efforts to establish what happened to claudia and to identify any person responsible for causing her harm. Claudia disappeared from her home in the area of york in march 2009. She talked to her mother on the phone in the night before she failed to arrive for work in the kitchens at York University. High profile appeals were made at the time by the police and her father, who reported her missing. This is not a job she went on, she did not take money, he did not take a Debit Card or passport. As far as im aware she did not take spare clothes. Nine people are being questioned about the disappearance but no charges had ever been brought. Every year, her father made an appeal for Information but earlier this year, Peter Lawrence died. Now at last, there may be a breakthrough in the case of his Daughters Disappearance although police are playing down the possibility of an imminent answer. It is interesting police refused to take any questions when they made the statement. They will not be drawn on what has brought them here. The enquiry has always been ongoing over the 12 years in the background but this does feel significant, whats happening here. Has somebody finally come forward with a vital piece of Information . Detectives have always said they believed there were people staying deliberately silent. Has somebody finally cracked . North Yorkshire Police say they will be here for several days potentially and they are searching the woodland behind me and also a number of lakes, which are former Gravel Pits which are now used. As fishing ponds. 0ur as fishing ponds. Our thanks to Danny Savage with that update there. More on the death of rolling stones Drummer, charlie watts, who has died at the age of 80. There is no way you could compete with them, nor have they ever attempted to do that. Charlie was himself from Day One to the day he died. More power to him. Bob, just want to come to yield, we were talking a little bit earlier on about the jazz and the influence of jazz, which is slightly less well known, perhaps stapley asked, when you compare as kenny said, with John Bynum you know, the israel larger than life driving Drummer'>Force Drummer is in bands like Led Zeppelin and the who, Charlie Wasnt like that. Charlie had come in his mind anyway from a Sort Ofjazz background. He loved to Duke Ellington as an 11 year old. He loved Miles Davis in the 60s, and he brought that actually come into the music of The Rolling Stones. So there was a control about his drumming that was very, very understated, and yet was absolutely vital to the way The Rolling Stones sounded. And just finally, kenny, vital to the way The Rolling Stones sounded. Andjust finally, kenny, if i could just finish with you, just try and sum up what kind of place in history will he have now . The new law is designed to make it easier to prosecute people who carry out these attacks. Trades unions say the pandemic has made matters worse, with staff facing trouble if they challenge customers who arent obeying the rules. Heres our Business Correspondent david henderson. This man has been working for a Supermarket Chain throughout the lockdown. At times, it has been hard because of a tiny minority of customers behaving badly. Most of it has been Fowl Language happier in the highland but inconvenient stores i have a story is that there has been physical, i have seen some of the verbal as well where colleagues have been sworn at or shouted at because of things such as the social distancing, the mask wearing and various other aspects. No one likes it at all and that includes myself. One is coming down now without a mask. For some Shop Workers, moments like this have been a potential flashpoint. These men wanted to be served during a lockdown without wearing a mask. Leaving staff unsure about how to react. If anything, all the new Covid Rules make things more challenging for many Shop Workers because now they are reminding customers about the need to wear a mask and maintain social distance and that advice doesnt always go down well. From today, new laws take effect across scotland, giving more protection to workers with the prospect of stiff fines and even a Prison Term for those guilty of abuse or violence. Supporters say it will help if police are willing to enforce these new rules. Employers are supporting this as well so it is notjust coming from employees, employers are more than happy to make staff safe and that happens. All too often, retail workers are asked to enforce the law but have not had the protection of the law and we need to make sure that changes. This new law only applies to workers in shops. There are calls for similar protection to be put in place to help those serving in pubs and restaurants. As we have tried to recruit people back in the industry the last thing we need is to see any kind of abuse, Albeit A Small Leveljust now, we need to call it out so it does not become a bigger issue. Its not acceptable in hospitality or any sector for any member of our staff or the general public to be abused in anyway. For now, there is no plan to extend this law beyond Shop Workers. With facemasks and cues still testing the patience of customers, the new rules may soon be put to the test. With me with me is mohammed rajak, who has run the Buywell Day Today Convenience Store in the East End of glasgow for the last 30 years. He was the victim of a life threatening attack while shutting up shop for the day. And also im joined by doug russell, Health And Safety officer at the union usdaw. Why dont i i convey to exactly what we are doing, and i think what is important to note that i also said yesterday in the full context of my answer, which i put out today, was that we are committed to bringing americans home who want to leave, and that is the president s commitment. So let me explain to you how our process works, and there have been some very good questions, including from you and others about this. One can as we have said, this is a dynamic number, we are breaking hour by hour to refinance make it precise. I understand your Desire And Interest and have having an exact number of American Citizens on the ground, and the State Department i expect will have an exact update on that tomorrow. Just remind you, the us government does not track our citizens when they travel Around The World. We rely on south reporting. Notjust in afghanistan, anywhere in the world, people have to decide to register or not. Its up to them, those individuals whether they decide to register or not, wherever they may be. And if youve just stare when you are in a country like afghanistan, you are not required to the register. The State Department not also delivers alerts so if you are in afghanistan, they will contact you to see if you want to leave. For months, they have been telling americans to leave afghanistan for their own safety. It is our Responsibility And Role to work with and help American Citizens who want to leave. Let me finish, and then you can ask a follow up question. In recent days, they have reached out to every american citizen registered in afghanistan directly multiple times. This is a 20 57 operation, embassies all over the world are supporting phone banking, Text Banking and E Mail efforts. If we are not in touch with this individual, give me their Information'>Contact Information and we will get in touch with them. If any of you here from American Citizens who cannot reach them, give me their Information'>Contact Information and we will get in contact with them. Our estimate of the overall number of American Citizens who are there can increase because folks are just responding to our outreach you may not have registered. It can also decrease because people leave, they dont tell us they leave, or individuals who may reach out and convey they have the documentation needed dont. There are a range of factors there, and it is our responsibility to get the accurate Information. Ihe and it is our responsibility to get the accurate Information. He say no americans are the accurate Information. He say no americans are stranded, the accurate Information. He say no americans are stranded, can i americans are stranded, can someone. Americans are stranded, can someone americans are stranded, can someone americans are stranded, can someone. ~. , someone. Where listening there to the Press Secretary, someone. Where listening there to the Press Secretary, president i the Press Secretary, President Bidens Press Secretary, of course being pushed about that deadline of August The 31st for that withdrawal from afghanistan. She was saying they are currently on pace to meet that deadline and staying on track to be the largest airlift in us history, describing it as successful, and saying, again, the us government is committed to bringing americans home, and we do expect to be hearing from President Biden himself a little later on this evening. So do stay tuned for that. Meanwhile, lets Take A Look at the weather. Well, one things for sure, its going to be dry over the next coming days, possibly in the next seven to ten days. And thats because this area of high pressure blocking high pressure is anchored itself across the uk. Stopping these Weather Fronts from coming in so all the rain is out into the atlantic where as we have these sunny skies in many western areas. But at times cloudy a little bit further east. And you can see this area of cloud during the day across lincolnshire, parts of the midlands as well. And its basically banks of cloud flowing around in the centre of this high. South coast however, clear tonight. And also northwestern part of the country will stay clear. These are the morning temperatures, 14 in belfast, 14 in norwich, we might be a little bit fresher there in the northeast of england. So the high is with us tomorrow. The centre of it is around scotland. This is where the winds will be lightest, where these guys will be sunniest. 26 degrees expected in glascow, a little bit fresher further south where we have just that little bit more cloud. Bye bye. This is Bbc News im christian fraser, our top stories the taliban says afghans are not allowed to go to the airport In Kabul. With thousands still trying to leave the country a spokesman for the group also repeated their demand for all foreign forces to be out of afghanistan by next tuesday. Western leaders have been meeting to discuss the August 31st deadline President Biden says he is sticking to it. Were expecting to hear from him in the next 30 minutes. There are kinks in the global Supply Chain that are starting to bite. In the uk, Mcdonalds Hasjust run out of milkshakes. Just one example. Well be looking at the bigger picture.
