His publicist says he passed away peacefully in a London Hospital earlier today tributes have been pouring in from across the Music World a number of important developments. The us insists its August 31 to be out afghanistan stays despite the uk and others asking it to extend. And ther taliban says the road to kabul aiport is now now closed to afghans. This is a statement earlier. Really trying to control the situation. Their way Up To the airport has been closed now and afghans are not allowed to go there now and foreigners are allowed to go but we have stopped afghan nationals from going and we are we assuring you to come to your homes and come back to yourjobs and come back to your normal life. There is no dangerfor you. Heres our Correspondent Secunder kermani with the latest from kabul. Thousands remain in dire conditions outside the airport including whole families. Many of them have no permission to travel or permission to board one of these evacuation flights but they are desperate to get out of the country, they have turned up there anyway and they are trying to wave documents in the face of the soldiers who are there proving that they worked with international embassies or with foreign troops and hoping that somehow that will be enough to get them through. At times it seems as if the situation may be slightly less chaotic than its been in previous days but thats only because those previous days were so incredibly horrific. I have just come out of a Pentagon Press Conference in which i asked them about the possibility of an extension to the 31st of August Deadline for The End of the evacuation scheme. Some confusion also caused by comments by the taliban spokesman about whether or not they would allow the evacuation of afghan nationals to continue. One spokesman clarifying to me saying they will allow how those afghans that the correct documentation to leave but will not allow others but also saying they were not in favour of allowing afghans to leave the country. Those comments really, really raise concerns about afghans here who are thinking about leaving and wondering whether they will still be able to do so after The End of the month. The pentagon says its accelerated the pace of evacuations with flights carrying citizens and allies now leaving every 45 minutes. Heres what we know. The us has helped around a8,000 people leave afghanistan since an intense airlift started on m august. Out of those, 21,000 people were flown out in the last 2a hours alone. Thats the highest number of people flown out by the us in a single day since the operations began. But its not clear how many remain in the country. Earlier the pentagons press secretary, john kirby, said that the us is still planning to finish the withdrawal from Kabul Airport on the 31st august. No change to the timing of the mission which is to have this completed by The End of the month. We continue to make progress every day in getting americans as well as siv applicants and vulnerable afghans out and you heard that numbers that the general briefed just a minute ago and the vast majority of these individuals are afghans. So, we remain committed to getting any and all americans that want to leave to get them out and we still believe certainly that we have been able that we have been able to increase the flow and we believe that we have the capability, the ability to get that done by The End of the month. As you know, the us came under some pressure from some of the g7 to push the date back. What is their Biting Calculation cannot do that . The . The date back. What is their Biting Calculation cannot do that . They are sa in the calculation cannot do that . They are saying they can calculation cannot do that . They are saying they can do calculation cannot do that . They are saying they can do Everything Calculation cannot do that . They are saying they can do everything they l saying they can do everything they need to do and they can accomplish this mission by The End of the month and that is read out confirming as you say it. How many people left in afghanistan are foreign nationals or those afghans who have permission to leave or have worked either as cultural advisers or translators are so on with Coalition Forces over the last 20 years. We dont know what that figure is, a lot of Military Planners here wonder how feasible it is but all of those left, committed many thousands last live be removed by the 31st of august, even getting the kind of numbers that theyre talking about. The 21,600 that left in the last 2a hours. Even at that pace, we are not clear up a lot of Military Planners are not clear it can be achieved particularly Ben Glynn Youve also had to withdraw the 5800 american troops that are on the 5800 american troops that are on the ground in afghanistan to aid this effort as well. Mil the ground in afghanistan to aid this effort as well. This effort as well. All of these calculations this effort as well. All of these calculations being this effort as well. All of these calculations being run this effort as well. All of these calculations being run through| this effort as well. All of these I Calculations being run through by the white house, are we expected to hear from the white house, are we expected to hearfrom President Biden in an image or anytime now. Whats the purpose of this latest statement . Its helping me to clarify what he said earlier. Because as i saying that he wants to stick to that deadline of the 31st of august, hes also asked the pentagon to make Contingency Plans in case the operation does go longer. So, there would be clarification on those points as well but also about the discussions that were had with the other g7 nations. Many of whom were angered at the arbitrary deadline as the British Government put it that had been set for this mission to be accomplished and really what other countries wanted was all of the people who need to get out to get out before the said animation came to an end. Still, a great deal of criticism coming from allies from even the pentagon here who wanted real clarity because this is a big operation. Its notjust about getting troops out, its about getting troops out, its about getting supplies and sell, they really want clarity as to when this ends and they dont have that yet. So thats what a lot of people will be hoping to hear in this press conference. Be hoping to hear in this press conference. , ~ ,. ,. We have got together at the meeting must empower as an agreed Notjust A Joint approach to dealing with the evacuation might also a Road Map for the way in which we are going to engage with the taliban. With the taliban and it probably will be a taliban government In Kabul and then number one condition we are setting at g set them is that they have got to guarantee right all the way through August The 31st and beyond a safe passage for those who wants to come out. It would be impossible for the uk to carry out its Evacuation Writ outside the us military presence at the airport. This is why. As you can see here, us troops are running the majority of the airports facilities including one of the most crucial air traffic control. As well as that, having to replace the surveillance being provided by the us at the moment would be expensive and slow. General sir richard barrons, a Retired British general who served in afghanistan, said we would have to be prepared to leave the airport, and fight the taliban to go and get these people. I just dont see that as a credible proposition. Tobias ellwood, a conservative Mp And Chair of the defence select committee in the House Of Commons he had some scathing words for the us. Its astonishing, we had the G7 Summit here in cornwall in the uk only a few months ago. The determination by the united states and britain and we signed a new charter that determine to give greater resolve to what the west stands for, what we believe in, and what we are waiting to defend and here we are belittled in disarray and having to negotiate and airports to remain open and critical it must because that Air Bridge is vital to get at risk afghans out of the country and i am really sorry that when im having to mop up so many poor decisions, a litany of mistakes both strategic and operational that were made unilaterally by the united states. Eu Member States are still working on their evacuation efforts. This plane carrying 2,000 french nationals and afghans landed in paris earlier today. And the eu says that it has has evacuated all its staff from afghanistan, apart from some officials still working at Kabul Airport. Heres the president of the European Commission charles michel. We have also raised this issue with our american friends and partners on two particular aspects. First, they need to secure the airport to complete the operations and a fair and equitable access to the airport for all nationals entitled to evacuation. On humanitarian and migration, illjust make two remarks. First, the eu will do its part to support the safety and proper living conditions of afghans who flee. And president of the European Commission Ursula Von Der Leyen spoke about the need for a co ordinated approach to accepting migrants and refugees fleeing afghanistan have a listen. We will underline the urgent need for the Member States of the European Parliament to find an agreement on our proposed pact of migration and asylum. We need a fully functioning system in place that allows us to effectively manage our boys and to ensure its identity between Member States and to cooperate with countries of origin and transit. Nasir Ahmad Andisha is the ambassador of afghanistan to the united nations. He was appointed under the former regime and was present at todays un human Rights Council meeting. Thank you very much for talking to us. One of those trying to flee afghanistan was a young woman from nottingham, who was visiting relatives with her mother and two young siblings when the taliban took control. Shes now back in the uk and our correspondent Navtej Johal has been speaking to her. Glad to see you again. Lovely to see you. You look so handsome thank you the Sound Ofjoy and relief. Rageeb has spent the past week worrying about his wife, adult daughter and two small children who have been trying desperately to leave afghanistan. They travelled there last month from their home in nottingham to visit sick elderly grandparents, and never expected to be caught up in the taliban takeover. These images were filmed by rageebs 24 year old daughter last week as they tried to get through to the airport In Kabul. Rageeb, a taxi driver, said he feared for their lives. Now theyve finally returned to the uk. How are you feeling today . Im very happy, very happy. Just so happy and glad. Just obviously, they are so tired at the moment, just landing at the airport. Im very overjoyed because i didnt even know that. In the morning, i felt so angry and annoyed, but then when i heard that, like, when i heard they were here, my emotions, like, immediately changed. His daughter spoke to me from inside the airport. Watching the taliban On Tv was, it was just like a Horror Movie for me. But seeing them face to face, it was something like i cant describe it at all. It has been really, really tough. Because everywhere you go, you see them. With their guns, and theyre really, really rude, theres no respect for women. Much relieved to see my siblings here, really happy, oh, we are home, back, were going to see dad. So theyre really happy. Seeing them happy, mum happy, its just everything for me. And im just waiting to see my dad and my brothers. The family who have returned from afghanistan will need to complete a ten Day Hotel Quarantine before they can be reunited with the rest of the family in nottingham. And certainly for the rest of this week, its a case of sunny spells, but for some of us, cloudy at times, as well. Now this is a Blocking Area of High Pressure it stops the weather fronts, the Rain Fronts from making any progress eastwards, so hence itll keep things dry for us. But its not gin clear within this High Pressure you can see areas of cloud earlier on, but many areas of the country seeing some sunshine. So through the course of this evening and overnight, its a case of clear skies across many western and southern areas. Closer to the North Sea coasts and also inland, it once again will turn cloudy as that North Sea cloud drifts in or persists, if you have it already. That means that Wednesday Morning will start off grey in a number of areas. But, just like today, that cloud will give way to some sunshine eventually. So you can see through the morning, the Cloudier Skies, and into lunch time, the Cloudier Skies there into the east, the southeast as well, breaking up here, but sunshine along the coast and beautiful weather along the coasts of wales, the irish sea. Theres some fantastic weather in the southwest of scotland, and in glasgow, Up To 26 celsius with Light Winds and sunshine. Now a subtle difference on thursday a little cool front is expected to ride on the eastern edge of this High Pressure here and bring some cool winds from the north. So heres that Cooler Wind blowing out of the North Sea, bringing some cloud here. So i think on the coast itself, it could actually feel relatively chilly, temperatures could be around 15 16 celsius. Out towards the west where the winds are lighter and theres more sunshine, temperatures will be in the low 20s. And little change expected into friday, the High Pressures with us centred across scotland and the Norwegian Sea so this is where the best of the weather will be once again. Always a bit more of a breeze closer to East Anglia and, say, the Lincolnshire Coast there. And the temperatures around 18 celsius in norwich, well probably get into the low 20s just across some Western Parts of the uk. So a quiet week ahead, and the quiet weathers expected to last into the weekend and probably into the well probably get into the low 20s just across some Western Parts of the uk. So a quiet week ahead, and the quiet weathers expected to last into the weekend and probably into the bank holiday weekend. And it looks as though that High Pressure is in no hurry to budge. Bye bye. There was one period where there was a bit of Rock And Roll excess they began to take hold of him, too much drinking and drugs. He said there was one moment that really caught him short, when Keith Richards came Up To him and told him to get his act together. I Keith Richards is telling you to do that, you sort yourself out. But he was quiet, relatively introverted, he was a person who didnt like the Rock And Roll life and the groupies were all that, but he loved to play Drums'>The Drums and he was there. We have also received credible reports of serious violation of international human Rights Law and Human Rights abuses taking place in many areas under effective taliban control. They include, among others, Summary Executions of civilians and all the Combat Members of the Afghan National Security Forces. Imogen foulkes is in bern, switzerland. Weve been hearing from her and from staff and her office that these reports have been coming in they appear to be quite widespread from areas where the taliban has actually been an effective control for quite some time, and although its very hard with the chaotic situation afghanistan to really verify some of these reports, she would not be mentioning them in front of all the un Member States if she was not taking them seriously. And i think there is concern that weve had find words from the taliban, but that the actions do not reflect the promises they made to respect Human Rights. And i think this was why the human Rights Council met today, but what it decided to do at The End of this Emergency Session was not nearly as strong as what many human Rights Activist had urged them to do. The western countries, the us in particular resisted that, so i think there was this move of we wont mention just one group that might be committing Human Rights violations, many Human Rights violations have been committed in afghanistan over the last 20, even A0 years. We will look at what Military Equipment the us left behind in afghanistan and how much of that is now in the hands of the taliban. Nicola sturgeon has said she Cant Rule out the Roll Out of some covid assertions after daily cases reached assertions after daily cases reached a high yesterday. Surpassing the previous highest level in earlyjuly Lana Gordon has more. One after the other, scots are still being vaccinated. Im told today its making a big difference, but also a warning that cases are on the rise again, and concern is growing, and new controls are not being ruled out. If this surge continues and accelerates, and if we start to see evidence of a substantial increase in serious illness as a result, we cannot completely rule out having to re impose some restrictions. Half of scotlands new covered cases are in the under 25s. Around a third are in people who have been double dosed. An numbers was predicted, but this is being described as a fragile and pivotal moment in the pandemic. We expected Case Numbers to rise, we expected a sharp rise when things like schools returned and testing increased. But there is an underlying trend upwards in Case Numbers in Scotland And Weve seen that in the past 2 3 weeks. By law, you still have to wear a mask you in scotland in indoor public settings such as shops or on public transport. But aside from that, most legal restrictions have now been lifted. And all of us, Nicola Sturgeon said, had been letting our Behaviour Drift back to normal. A Campaign Group made up of families of those who died from covid welcomed news that a public enquiry into how the crisis was handled will be held. This on a day that weve all been reminded that this pandemic is far from over. Lana gordon, Bbc News, glasgow. Im ros atkins. Our Lead Story is that a taliban spokesperson has said that a taliban spokesperson has said that afghan should not go to Kabul Airport or try to leave the country. And Charlie Watts, the Rolling Stones drummer, has died at the age of 80. America invested heavily in equipment for the Afghan Military. Between 2002 and 2017, 28 Billion was spent including weapons, ammunition, vehicles, helicopters and drones. As the taliban defeated the military province after province, it took everything that was left behind. And the militants are making the most of that investment. A War Booty worth hundreds of millions has been collected. Which has left The Americans trying to calculate whats been lost. I dont have an exact inventory of what equipment the afghans had at their disposal. Ida what equipment the afghans had at their disposal. Their disposal. We dont want to see any weapons or but Mr Kirby had this hope. We dont want to see any weapons or Systems J want to see any weapons or systems to fall into the hands of people that would use them in such a way to harm our interests. The americans may not want that but what they want and whats happening in afghanistan at the moment are two different things. And the risks were known. Injuly, the us completed its withdrawal from bagram airbase. Across the country, it took home many of its planes and weapons. But it couldnt take everything. This report by the special Inspector General for afghanistan reconstruction found that the Afghan Military had more than 150 aircraft, including 23 a 29 Ground Attack Aircraft a5 Black Hawk helicopters, and 50 md 530 helicopters. Its not clear what has happened to all of them. But here are the taliban with an a29 this was posted on twitter. Also posted on twitter was this video of taliban fighters next to a Black Hawk to which the biden administration says this. Those blackhawks were not given to the taliban, they were given to the Afghan National Security Forces to be able to defend themselves at the specific request of President Connie who came to the Oval Office and asked for additional air capability, among other things. They werent for the taliban. But if the Afghan Military was defeated that outcome was always possible. Whether the taliban can actually fly them is another matter. This is a former black Hawk Pilot talking to npr. Its not something you can do overnight, a week or month. It takes a long overnight, a week or month. It takes a long time overnight, a week or month. It takes a long time. Someone could get in there. A long time. Someone could get in there. It a long time. Someone could get in there, it may some Operating Manuals and figure there, it may some Operating Manuals and figure out how to get the engine started and figure out how to get the engine started and the road is turning, and et started and the road is turning, and get up started and the road is turning, and get up in started and the road is turning, and get up in the air. But they would probably get up in the air. But they would probably be more of a danger to themselves and anyone at that point. But even if they cant fly the Black Hawks, thats only part of the picture. Frud bezhan of Radio Liberty reports. We can be sure the taliban know how to use a lot of that. And pictures like these have emerged, of taliban fighters looking quite different. Listen to the bbc s lyse doucet s description of seeing men like this. Many of them wearing american issued uniforms, carrying american made ma rifles, carrying those exactly the way americans would teach you. So Thatis Way americans would teach you. So that is reallyjarring. Its jarring because they have the kit. Its also jarring because if some of these fighters have clearly been trained by The Americans. Its notjust the kit that is switching sides. So have some afghan soldiers. And theres No Doubt the taliban is relishing all of this. This promotional video appears to show more fighters decked out in the us gear. And the issue is causing concern in washington. Michael mccaul is the top republican in House Of Representatives foreign affairs committee. So far, there are not reports of that threat becoming real. And soon, the us and its allies will be gone but its Equipment Wont be. To the benefit of the taliban and the detriment of those whod question its rule. Neha dwivedi is a military Capabilities Analyst atjanes, a global Defence And Security intelligence company. Shes in hyderabad, in india. Heres her assessment of how many weapons the taliban has seized. Starting with the aircraft. But it is unlikely the taliban will be able to use the us supplied aircraft, as many of them have suffered. They have experience. And lets not forget that many of the soldiers had defected to the taliban at some point. Fighters have been seen recorded carrying Ma And M6 rifles, howitzers, etc. But there are obviously challenges, millions of these humvees will be a challenge for the taliban. Inability to find spares for these vehicles will render many of them useless. They will need technicians. Itare render many of them useless. They will need technicians. Will need technicians. Ive seen some reports will need technicians. Ive seen some reports that will need technicians. Ive seen some reports that the will need technicians. Ive seen some reports that the taliban i will need technicians. Ive seen. Some reports that the taliban may consider selling some of this equipment, especially the humvees perhaps in pakistan. Do you think those reports are credible . These concerns are those reports are credible . These concerns are valid. Those reports are credible . These concerns are valid. Its those reports are credible . These concerns are valid. Itsjust those reports are credible . These concerns are valid. Itsjust not. Those reports are credible . These concerns are valid. Itsjust not a i concerns are valid. Its just not a capable option for the taliban to use these humvees in afghanistan. They may continue to use light cruisers because is just they may continue to use light cruisers because Isjust Easierfor them to use them. But i think people should worry about the small arms because these weapons might easily end up into the hands of militants in southeast china. Depending on the quantity of the weapons, they might want to sell them for quick cash. I cant see for sure that theyll do it now because they might find their way into the market for the hands of militant groups in the region. Does the taliban need militant groups in the region. Does the taliban need additional small arms and ammunition . Is it not already well armed . I arms and ammunition . Is it not already well armed . Arms and ammunition . Is it not already well armed . I mean, the taliban has already well armed . I mean, the taliban has been already well armed . I mean, the taliban has been seeking already well armed . Taliban has been seeking to create their arsenalfor a long time. But it has been an expensive affair for them. So having these Ma And M 16 Assault Rifles is easier for them to upgrade their arsenal with lighter weapons. So i agree the taliban has quite a number of weapons and guns, but having these guns, especially Ma And M 16 rifles will beef up their inventory. The 2020 paralympics have begun injapan. The Opening Ceremony took place a few hours ago in tokyos Olympic Stadium with fireworks and around 3,000 paralympians and team officials parading with national flags. Inside the stadium, seats were empty as with augusts olympics, there were almost no spectators because of coronavirus restrictions. Nearly a,500 athletes are taking part in these games. Theyre from 162 different national teams. And theyre competing over the next 12 days in 22 different sports. New sports making an appearance in tokyo this year include Para Badminton and para taekwondo. Not only do organisers want top level competition, they also want the games to play a big part in making Japanese Society more inclusive. But the pandemic has meant some plans have had to be downgraded. Heres more from Tokyo Correspondent Rupert Wingfield hayes. It isa it is a chance for disabled people to showcase their talents to the world, and to show that they are basically fundamentally no different from anybody else. And to that end, the japanese government was hoping to have tens of thousands of schoolchildren come and attend the events. That has had to be scaled back and because of that, the impact of these games on the stigma surrounding Disability Injapan and in asia, unfortunately, it may be reduced. So whats the situation with Covid 19injapan . A State Of Emergency remains in place in tokyo and several other prefectures, with infections continuing to rise. After a slow start, around A0 of the population are double vaccinated. Heres Rupert Wingfield hayes again. The situation for covid has changed dramatically in the last few weeks. Infection rates in tokyo have risen sharply. We are now seeing 25,000 new infections a day injapan, more than 10,000 people in tokyo are waiting for Hospital Beds with covid. And because of that, the authorities, the police as you can see here are trying to disperse people and stop them from coming up and gathering in places that could cause the infection to spread more. So many people have asked me, how do the people of tokyo feel about the paralympics going ahead . Is there Enthusiasm Or Hostility . And i think the answer is, emotions here are again very mixed. There is no hostility towards the games themselves or the athletes, people here are very welcoming of those who have come to compete, and they will watch the games on television with enthusiasm as they did with the olympics. I think the hostilities mainly towards the ioc and the japanese government for the very bad management they have made of the covid pandemic, the very slow Roll Out of vaccines here, and the fact that this has been pushed ahead with despite the fact that the pandemic has been getting worse and worse. Lets hear more about one of the athletes in tokyo. Steve bate is the first person with a visual impairment to solo climb El Capitan in california, one of hardest ascents in the world. But his talents dont stop there after taking up road cycling, hes made his way into team gb. He won gold at the rio olympics, and now steve and his co pilot, adam, are hoping to repeat their success injapan. Claire press reports. If you want to be the best in the world, youve got to work harder than everyone else. Paralympic champion Steve Bate is chasing after one Thing Gold in tokyo. Ten years ago, steve was diagnosed with a rare eye disorder. My eyesight is getting narrower and narrower, My Field Of Vision is getting smaller and smaller. If i hold my hands there, i cant see them, you know, which is really bizarre. Before his diagnosis, steve had spent his life in the mountains. At that time in my life, that was everything to me. All of a sudden, that wasjust like gone. Within a few sentences of getting an eye check, like, you cant drive, i dont think you should climb any more. Living the dream up here. Check out that view. But instead of giving up, steve took on the climb of his life, ascending over 900 metres. This is the really scary bit. In 2013, steve became the first visually impaired person to solo climb El Capitan, one of the hardest ascents in the world. I always said that was the missing piece of the puzzle, for me to reach that full potential, Like Go Into Overdrive and try and achieve stuff. Within four years of picking up a road bike, steve and his co Pilot Adam had won two gold paralympic medals. Riding in tandem, they are called the power and the pilot. But hang on a minute. Is the person on the back doing more work . Ask adam that. No, thats not really how it works. On the tandem, weve both have powers that power each other. We have to pedal together at the same time. I dont just steer anyway, but people do sometimes think that. Oh, you just steer then, you dont do any peddling . Everyone says, yeah, really talented. Im not. Maybe my talent is just that i can focus on Something And Block everything else out. Maybe the Tunnel Vision Eyesight helps with that. Clear price for Bbc News, in manchester. Clear price. As forjoe biden, we are now told he will speak in as forjoe biden, we are now told he willspeak in an as forjoe biden, we are now told he will speak in an hour and a halfs time. Bye bye. Hello. The weather is expected to remain settled for the foreseeable future, at least the next 7 10 days. So a quiet week ahead, and the quiet weathers expected to last into the weekend and probably into the bank holiday weekend. And it looks as though that High Pressure is in no hurry to budge. Bye bye. This is Bbc News. The headlines heavy crowds remain around Kabul Airport as G7 Leaders call on the taliban to allow safe passage for anyone who wants to leave afghanistan beyond The End of the month deadline. But number one condition that we are insisting upon is safe passage beyond the 30 first, beyond this initial phase for those 31st who want to leave afghanistan.
