The average for the time of year. Tonight, notice the wind is blowing around the High Pressure so it is like a clock. I pressure here. Within the centre, that is where the wind is light, some Mist And Murk forming in the morning, grey, overcast skies. Eventually that strong August Sunshine works on The Clouds and we end up with a fairly bright afternoon. The best of the weather will be in the centre of the High Pressure. That is where the air is sinking and squeezing out The Clouds. Quite often we get the higher temperatures there as well. Maybe 25 glasgow whereas around it, where there is more of a breeze, particularly coastal areas, we are talking some five or 6 degrees lower than that. It will be to do with where you are in relation to the centre of this High Pressure over the next few days. For example, on the next few days. For example, on the North Sea Coast the, with a cool Front Grazing us through wednesday and thursday, they will be more of a breeze, more cloud, i6 and thursday, they will be more of a breeze, more cloud, 16 or 17 celsius, but further west, temperatures could be hitting mid 20s. Broadly speaking, it is high teens or low 20s for many of us. Look at these Weather Symbols, hardly changing there. A little little little change on the weather front. Thank you very much. A reminder of our top story. The Defence Secretary says britain and the us have hours not weeks to evacuate people from afghanistan. Swimmer Ellie Simmonds and Archerjohn Stubbs will be the great Britain Flag bearers at the tokyo paralympic Opening Ceremony, which takes place tomorrow. Both athletes are competing in their fourth games injapan. Chef de Mission Penny briscoes selections mean simmonds will be the first woman to carry the flag for gb at a Summer Games since fellow swimmer Maggie Mceleny 21 years ago. Stubbs is the oldest member of the team at 56 years old. There are literally no words to describe it. I mean, this is my fourth paralympics and ive never actually been to an Opening Ceremony so to go to an Opening Ceremony so to go to an Opening Ceremony but also have the privilege of carrying the flag withjohn, its going to be so exciting. When penny said that i was called for a meeting with her, i thought it was a general meeting. When she announced that me and john were both flag bearers, i think we were both in all and didnt really know how to respond in awe. The action at the Paralympic Games begins on wednesday, a year after originally planned owing to the Covid I9 pandemic. It takes place despite the tokyo 2020 Official Hidemasa Nakamura saying last week that the Infection Situation Injapan had deteriorated since the olympics. The international paralympic Comittee President Andrew Parsons admits preparations havent been easy. Its been really difficult, but we believe working together with health experts, the ioc and the japanese government and the organising committee, we came up with a very good set of countermeasures which prove to be efficient during the olympics, some were encouraged by that, but still something we have only seen in practice and we need to make sure that the things that are working are in place and at the same time we can still have the same atmosphere in the games. Even without spectators. The team for the Solheim Cup has been announced, and there are three English Players selected for Europes Defence of the title against the united states next month. Georgia Hall And Charley hull made the team automatically, while Mel Reid is one of six picks from captain catriona matthew. Georgia hall makes the team after finishing second in the womens open, and will be making her third appearance in the competition. Charley hull meanwhile will be playing the event for the fifth time. But its especially significant for Mel Reid, who was picked after missing out on the selection in 2019. It was a tough Phone Call two years ago, to say you hadnt quite made it and were asked to be vice captain. I think that shows how much she loves it. She didnt think for an instant and said she would do it. It was a much nicer Phone Call this time. I think she will be a great addition. She has the experience and has the passion for team play. They have been trying for two years to make the team and to finally get that confirmation you are in the team, obviously, the players are very excited, especially the rookies, i think, when you are playing in your first one. I managed to catch mel, just before she set off for atlanta, and as you can imagine she wasjust delighted. The England Bowler Mark wood is out of the third test against india. Which begins this week after suffering a shoulder injury. Hejarred his right shoulder in the last test at lords, which england lost by 151 runs, having drawn the first match in the series. The third test takes place at headingley, starting on wednesday. Andy murray Beat American Noah Rubin in the Winston Salem open first round. He was due to be playing nick kyrgios, but the australian pulled out with a knee injury. Murray won in straight sets 6 2, 6 0 and took victory by winning ten successive games. The final Tennis Major of the year, the Us Open starts next week. Thats all the sport for now. You can find more on all those stories on the Bbc Sport website. Thats bbc. Co. Uk sport. Under taliban rule in the 19905 women were not allowed to work or get an education. They insist things will be different now but many are sceptical. Fawzia koofi is a prominent womens Rights Campaigner and former mp, who was also part of the Governments Team negotiating with the taliban. Whilst many in kabul are understandably deeply afraid right now, she spoke to our afghanistan Correspondent Secunder kermani, about her concerns. Iam very i am very worried about the future of the country, as a whole. Women being part of that. At this stage, the situation is very uncertain, very chaotic, there is no government and given the Talibans History from the past, women are the most probably concerned citizens these days. But there is comes uncertainty about what will happen to the country and what will happen to the country and what will happen to them, whether they will lose their jobs, to them, whether they will lose theirjobs, whether they to them, whether they will lose their jobs, whether they will to them, whether they will lose theirjobs, whether they will be safe, whether they will be pressed to stay home, whether their husbands will lose jobs, to stay home, whether their husbands will losejobs, whether to stay home, whether their husbands will lose jobs, whether there will be another war. A lot of women have actually contacted me, theyve come to see me or messaged me, they are trying our way out or looking for something different. Not only in terms of security but in terms of hope for a better country. They dont have it any more. But in the meantime i think im very proud to see them getting ready to resist, getting ready to protest, if the situation gets worse for them. What situation gets worse for them. What ou have situation gets worse for them. What you have seen situation gets worse for them. What you have seen from situation gets worse for them. What you have seen from the situation gets worse for them. What you have seen from the taliban so far, does it give you heart that perhaps they will respect womens rights, or do you think that we are going to see a return to what we saw in the 19905 . At going to see a return to what we saw in the 19905 . In the 1990s . At this stage, i think the are in the 1990s . At this stage, i think they are trying in the 1990s . At this stage, i think they are trying to in the 1990s . At this stage, i think they are trying to pretend in the 1990s . At this stage, i think they are trying to pretend that in the 1990s . At this stage, i think they are trying to pretend that it i they are trying to pretend that it will be ok. But whether that is something that will be expected across afghanistan by all the foot soldiers, because in the meantime we have received reports of how search things and executions, still taking hostages, we still have these reports. In some rural places, we still have reports of very young taliban armed men forcing women to wear a bra car, which is even not islamic. So the foot soldiers have different practice. In general, i think we have to really wait how everything will evolve. We often talk about the everything will evolve. We often talk about the fragile everything will evolve. We often talk about the fragile Gains Everything will evolve. We often talk about the fragile gains have been made over the last 20 years in afghanistan. Do you see them slipping away, or are you hopeful that they can be retained . Weill. That they can be retained . Well, everything that they can be retained . Well, everything collapsed that they can be retained . Well, everything collapsed very that they can be retained . Ii everything collapsed very rapidly. We all know the institutions we have invested Blood And Treasure to build them. Im hopeful because i think Women Today are different than they were 21 years back, i think they know how to inform the world about something that goes wrong to them. They are educated, which is the best weapon. There will be resistance, its not going to be a silent country as it was in 1996. D0 its not going to be a silent country as it was in 1996. Do you feel safe. Country as it was in 1996. Do you feel safe, being country as it was in 1996. Do you feel safe, being here, country as it was in 1996. Do you feel safe, being here, Talking Country as it was in 1996. Do you feel safe, being here, talking to| country as it was in 1996. Do you i feel safe, being here, talking to me like this . Are you planning on staying in the country . So many others are leaving. I staying in the country . So many others are leaving. Staying in the country . So many others are leaving. I plan to stay in the country others are leaving. I plan to stay in the country for others are leaving. I plan to stay in the country for as others are leaving. I plan to stay in the country for as long others are leaving. I plan to stay in the country for as long as others are leaving. I plan to stay in the country for as long as i others are leaving. I plan to stay. In the country for as long as i can. In the meantime, i know its getting more risky and difficult, with the international communitys complete withdrawal from the airport as well. But like many people in this country, that feel a kartik situation, hopeless, im also facing the same environment. But if authors leave with our bags, who is going to give people hope that we will be with you . That we are going to go through the same situation, same circumstances you are going, all afghans are not the 20,000 people that you see at the airport . When i turn off my Mobile Phone for a couple of hours, and i turn it on, i received a lot of Text Messages asking me why my phone was off, did i leave the country . That means that people are really desperate someone giving them some hope or sympathy, to be with them. In the meantime, i know that the spaces for people like me are shrinking and it becomes challenging. I hope there will be a situation where people exercise their right im sure people will always make the right choice. Meanwhile, an individual has spoken to the bbc on condition their identity is protected. The taliban are coming. Identity is protected. The taliban are coming, looking identity is protected. Over half of all the major festivals in the uk have been cancelled this year, many because they couldnt afford the insurance to cover the risk of last minute cancellations. A new Government Scheme has been announced thats designed to help. But will it . Ben thompson reports. Last year, there wasnt much to dance about. Covid wiped out most festivals. But with more vaccines, more tests and a return to something more normal this year, organisers felt more confident to stage events and sell tickets. But one by one, many of those have been forced to cancel. Glastonbury was one of the first. In normal times, it welcomes nearly 200,000 people. But despite the uncertainty, some smaller events did get the go ahead, like this Music Festival in birmingham. After the first lockdown, we did glastonbury on the back lawn, so we set all our lights up and stayed in a tent in the garden and had the screens up. And just basically pretended we were at a festival. This is the first gig that ive been to since obviously it all shut down two years ago now, was our last festival. So, yeah, its good to have this as a first one and just get back into the Music Scene again. We came last time pre pandemic, and this one was super tiny so it was her first ever festival. So its lovely being able to be back, isnt it . Yeah. For the traders here, its their first taste of work in 18 months. We was nearly two years out of actually being on events, which was heartbreaking. And its my mainstay of income. So its difficult, it was very difficult. I ended up being a scaffolderfor a year. I know, got these previously, weve done a lot of Pop Ups and click and collects so weve had to adapt, to adjust to the market. But itsjust been really nice to just get backjust talking to the customers and engaging, its been really good. But others are still reluctant to put on events. Theyre worried that a surge in infections could force them to cancel, leaving them to count the cost. And so the government has launched an Insurance Scheme to reassure the industry that it is safe to reopen. But the group representing Festival Organisers says its too little, too late. And many, they say, have already lost millions. And with the Summer Break nearly over, time is running out. The success of the next few weeks will determine whether there is really anything to celebrate. The headlines on Bbc News. Britain and america have hours not weeks to evacuate people from afghanistan, according to the Defence Secretary, as pressure grows on President Biden to delay withdrawing american troops from the country. The government clamps down on Cowboy Firms offering Pcr Travel tests, by removing nearly 60 companies from its website. Young people warn of the debilitating effects of long covid, as part of a campaign to encourage teenagers to get vaccinated. Now its time for across the uk. Cornwall council are to give a virtual Press Briefing Today on the rising cases of covid in parts of the county and possible links to the Boardmasters Festival which took place in newquay earlier this month. Sarah ransome, our bbc South West reporterjoins me now for more on this story. This is a hugely popular festival that has been going for a number of years, mainly for people aged 16 upwards. In the past, its been a Rite Of Passage for people who have just finished their gcses. Middle of august, lovely sunshine, sometimes, they would let their hair down. This year, it has been able to go ahead. National restrictions that we were all under throughout the last 18 months or so were lifted injuly. This festival went ahead. The organisation behind it said they spent a lot of time talking to public health officials and other partners to try to ensure they had various measures in place to make it as secure as they possibly could. Upwards of 50,000 people daily descend on the site near newquay, right on the clifftop, beautiful location looking out over the sea, they said the organisers said they had done all they could. Its almost like a small pop up time when you have the number of people coming on site every day. They say there are covid measures in place and you had to show you had taken a test, measure on site to comply with. There are questions over whether they worked or not. We might hear more about that this afternoon, but public health officials and Coral Council even before this event went ahead see the work closely with the organisers and they recognise that there probably would be a spike in cases, that it was a combination of things. Restrictions have been lifted, numbers in cornwall and all around the South Coast were going to be higher because its a Tourist Hotspot and others to manufacture it in another 50,000 or so people coming down specifically to this festival, its a five Day Festival and that itself could create more of and that itself could create more of a spike. We will potentially hear more about that afternoon. Anecdotally, we have been seeing on social media outlets, hundreds of young people who have been pouring out saying, ive come home with covid. In that age group, not everybody could have theirjabs. They are still playing catch up. 16 and 17 year olds are getting more jabs. There have been cases reported of young people have come to the festival and taken home. Public health officials are saying if you feel pearly you must get tested and isolate if need be. At the moment, where meat waiting to hear more in terms of numbers this afternoon. I understand public health officials are crunching those numbers as we speak. The meeting is due to star in half an hour or so. So we should hear more. Whether we will get a categoric analysis of the data at this stage, its unclear. Categoric analysis of the data at this stage, its unclear. Around 200 soldiers from 3 scots The Black Watch have left their base near inverness in readiness to deploy to afghanistan. Defence Secretary Ben Wallace was at Fort George earlier as the soldiers headed south, ahead of a potential deployment to kabul airport. From there, Iain Macinnes reports. Packed and prepared, an early Morning Call to depart for deployment. These soldiers from The Black Watch could be in kabul as early as the end of this week as the Evacuation Efforts in the country continue. Around 200 soldiers from 3 scots are preparing to head to kabul, many have never been before and many will return in the next few weeks but it should be a challenging deployment and many have returned in the past week. Soldiers and Staff Work hard to make sure we are the best we can be and we can face the challenges but we are incredibly confident of our ability to go out and deliver humanitarian aid where it is needed. Some of these soldiers wear the boots on the ground at the Flag Lowering Ceremony is in the afghan capital just last month but a lot has changed since then. When we were there last month, it was relatively calm compared to what it isjust now, obviously, all the troops are going back, ready To Leave kabul, so now it has changed in the last month and we are going back again. We have to make sure we do our very best to get people we have an obligation to out. The Defence Secretary ben wallace, a former soldier himself, was there to see them off. I have seen the company of the regiment set off on its way to forward to locate in Brize Norton to make sure they are ready as the reserve for what might happen next in afghanistan. It is really important to see the Guys Off and to set out to them what they maybe canj expect and what not. I think it is important to touch base with one of the units in the 16 air assault brigade,. Britains ready brigade, to make sure they are ready but also to understand what is on their minds. Farfrom their highland base, the situation in afghanistan changes by the hour. The opportunity to bring more afghans to safety diminishing. Iain macinnes, reporting scotland, Fort George. The paralympics get underway tomorrow in tokyo, and chesterfields Jack Shepherd is favourite to win gold in badminton, which is included at the games for the first time. 24 year Old Jack is the World Number one, but he says his success is down to playing like the underdog. Sally hurst has been talking to him at his Training Base in sheffield. When you work for it for over ten years now, its just such a proud feeling to be going and its like the dreams come true. WhenJack Shepherd first picked up a Badminton Racket at the age of ten, the sport was not even on the paralympic programme. But he fell in love with it instantly. Its just like the speed, the style of the shots, it were a sport, that is, when i was younger, at school, i could. Because it was technique based, i could play against average height people as well as people like myself, so it was quite inclusive and yeah, ijust really liked the sport. A major setback at 1a, when a corrective surgery on his legs took him out of the sport for nine months, only strengthened his resolve. Id run up and down the sports hall, wed do speed ladders, hurdles, just trying to lose some of the weight that i put on and regain some movement within the legs again. So sports was massive for me to, mentally and physically, get back to good health and a good level and to be able to compete again. Even though hes the World Number one, he credits his success to always playing like the underdog. When i go to any tournament, anybody can win it and i treat it as if im the underdog, so then i perform my best that way, and then hopefully, i get to the games, put myself in the mindset that im the underdog and bring back the Gold Medal. Hes been determined as anything, since i have known him. Thats why of the position hes in, but he has improved practically, physically, technique ly, and hesjust really open minded, really. Anything. It lets him evolve as a player quite quickly and yeah, thats why hes hot favourite. And what would it mean for you as that boy from chesterfield to bring home that Gold Medal . It would mean the world to me. Every time i dream about it, i get goose bumps. Now its time for a look at the weather with tomasz. Well, the week ahead is looking quiet on the weather front. Nothing dramatic happening over the next few days. There will be some sunshine around, but also, at times, it is going to be fairly cloudy and the reason for it is a big area of High Pressure has decided to park itself over us and it is not going to budge. So it is here today, it will be here through tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday and probably through the weekend and into next week. So all we are going to be doing is forecasting areas of cloud across the country, and which areas will be sunny and which areas will be overcast. So, this is what it looks like through this evening. Just the chance of a couple of spots of rain where The Clouds gather and clump, but on the whole, it is actually a mostly bright if not sunny afternoon for many central and eastern areas of the uk. Temperatures early evening will be around the high teens, maybe up to 22 in glasgow. I think a little bit fresher on the North Sea Coast because there is more of a breeze coming off the North Sea. So tonight, a bit like last night, it is steady as she goes on the weather front, Clear Skies across more western areas whereas central and Eastern Parts of the country are probably turning overcast by early morning as the North Sea wind drags in the cloud. Now, what weather you will get on tuesday or the subtleties on the weather will depend on where you are within this area of High Pressure. So, the thinking is in the centre of the High Pressure, so across scotland, i think that is where the best of the sunshine is going to be, and here temperatures could actually hit the mid 20s, whereas around the high, with the breeze blowing around it, there will be, at times, more cloud. But then again, you get to the South Coast and then there is more sunshine again. So, the distribution of cloud within this High Pressure will be variable. Here is a look at the Weather Map for wednesday, and notice there is a very weak cool front moving across the North Sea, it is just going to graze Eastern Parts of the uk later on wednesday and into thursday, so that does mean slightly fresher conditions along these North Sea Coasts. But further towards the west, the weather is going to be fine, i think the best of the sunshine again in the north western portion of the british isles, for Example Glasgow up to around 2a degrees. So, here is the summary for the week ahead, you can see by the Weather Symbols and the temperatures, it is pretty much settled across most of the uk and actually not feeling too bad at all. This is Bbc News. The headlines the race against time to evacuate people from afghanistan the British Government May Ask President Biden to delay the date of the final withdrawal of american troops.
