Dream. Dream. Dream, dream, dream. And, don everly, who had huge success with the everly brothers, has died aged 8a. Good evening. At least 20 people are known to have died in the Chaos And Panic in and around Kabul Airport in the week since the taliban seized control of afghanistan. As people continue to arrive at the airport, Britains Ambassador to the country says more than 5,000 people have been helped to leave so far and the us has drafted commercial airlines to help with its evacuation effort. In the last hour, the us president Joe Biden said theres still a Long Way To Go and a lot could still go wrong but that he hoped the Airlift Will End by august 31st. 0ur chief international Correspondent Lyse Doucet is now airside at Kabul Airport and has witnessed thousands of people desperate to get onto a flight to leave their homeland it hits you as soon as you put your foot on the tarmac of this airfield, the intensity and the urgency of this moment. Every direction we look at kabul international airport, afghans and foreigners, in straight lines, boarding the Military Transport planes that are all around this tarmac. Taking afghans, notjust away from their country, but away from the lives that they live, the identity that they cherish, leaving everything behind, to start from scratch. Today is the day that a generation of afghans have buried their dreams and aspirations and our lives. This city, to us, is our home, despite its contradictions. We called it home, we were raised from here, we hope that the taliban can learn from the lessons of the Past And Everyone else and we can prove that we can move away from the tanks and bullets, towards a road where everyone can see themselves. There is a scene that No One expected, nobody wanted and No One will forget. There were said to be more than 10,000, possibly 14,000 people, now, in this airfield, waiting to board a flight, to take them anywhere out of this country. Foreigners as well as afghans. There are thousands more afghans, a crush of afghans who raced to the airport, to try to get on one of these flights. Afghans have an expression when they travel, which means make yourjourney be happy. Some will be so relieved, so relieved. Some of them will have spent days outside, hoping to get inside here, it has taken some people days, days to get in because of the people who are pushing outside of The Gates. Little children, families, not knowing what kind of life they are heading to. While thousands of afghans have been trying to leave their country, many of the millions who are staying are anxious about the future particularly for women and girls. The taliban have said that female rights will be respected within the framework of islamic law but many people are concerned that women will be stopped from going to work, and girls from going to school. 0ur Correspondent Secunder kermani sent this report and a warning, it contains some distressing images. When the taliban took over kabul, many residents were terrified. But rowena, A Young Female journalist, decided she should go and talk to them, for her youtube channel. That was the last video she uploaded. She is unsure if the group will approve of her working or not. For now, many offices have told female employees to stay At Home. Many female professionals have fled in fear. It is hard to imagine the taliban accepting even small freedoms like this, filmed before the takeover. I really love myjob and i want to carry on working, she says. I hope the taliban will allow me to, otherwise i will have to leave the country and go abroad. The last time the taliban were in power in the 1990s, women were not allowed to work, girls could not go to school. Even now, they defend punishments like lashing and stoning adulterers to death. Today, under taliban rule, you do still see some women out and about in kabul, though significantly fewer than before. Many are simply too afraid to step outside. So far, here, they have not been ordered to wear the burka or to stay At Home unless accompanied by a man, but No One is sure if that will last. We have been trying to speak to any of the women here, but all of them are extremely reluctant to go on camera. That is not something entirely new, but one woman did tell me that while she was deeply anxious about the future, she did not feel safe saying anything critical about the taliban. Even without new laws been imposed, the fear is changing the way many women dress. No one is buying jeans any more, says the shopkeeper. Instead, they are buying Head Scarves and more conservative gowns. Many are deeply suspicious of the group, but today the taliban told female employees at kabul s Mayors Office to return to theirjobs. This woman is one of a handful that turned up. Theyjust said, you have to wear the hijab, she tells me, but i already dress like this anyway. The taliban have always been vague on their commitments to womens rights. In some areas, they banned girls going to school beyond the age of 12. Young afghan women have been among those taking part protests to defy the group. This woman is a prominent campaigner who was a member of the Team Negotiating with the taliban. A lot of women actually contact me, they come to see me or message me. They are trying to find a way out or looking for something different. Not only in terms of security, but in terms of hope, for a better country. They do not have it any more. But in the meantime, i am very proud to see them getting ready to resist. Many women worry, whatever the taliban say now, about being able to work or go to school, they will grow increasingly strict once the international focus comes to an end. For now, it is a time of deep uncertainty. Secunder kermani, Bbc News, kabul. The Prime Minister will convene a meeting of the G7 Group of leading nations this week to discuss afghanistan, in the wake of the us and allied troop withdrawal. The government says efforts to evacuate british people and eligible afghans from kabul are improving and that more than 1,700 people have been airlifted in the last 2a hours. The former Prime Minister, tony blair, has described the us withdrawal as tragic, dangerous, and unnecessary. Heres our political correspondent chris mason. He is the former Prime Minister most often remembered for the war in iraq. Good evening. Before that, came this moment in 2001. Shortly after the September 11th attacks. Military action against targets, Inside Afghanistan has begun. I can confirm that Uk Forces are engaged in this action. Two decades on, chaos, desperation. Tony blair says that afghanistan is being abandoned. It is tragic, dangerous and unnecessary, imbecilic to walk away. Many people, as a result of what has happened in afghanistan are going to have a deep doubt as to whether we can be relied upon and the trouble with this decision is that our friends are now anxious and those people opposed to us feel heartened by it and that is not a good place to be. It is a conflict that cost the lives of a57 Uk Servicemen and women. Thousands more were injured. As veterans ask themselves, if it was all worthwhile, the man who first sent them to afghanistan says yes. The fact is, the country did have a chance and it was really our own internal short term politics in the west that has driven, in the last couple of years, us to put at risk what we gained and i think it is only now that we are realising, in this moment of crisis, exactly how much we gained and how foolish it is to lose it. It is managing that crisis here at kabul s airport that remains the focus for british soldiers and the government. The taliban says one minister are making that a little easier than it was. They appear to now be marshalling people into separate queues for the us evacuation and for the Uk Evacuation and that is making a big difference to the size of the crowds outside the Uk Gate and allowing us to process people much more quickly. Thank you all. I mean, we are overwhelmed by this response. This is the welcome some of the afghan families who have made it to the uk are receiving. Right, shower gel, i have got another box. A synagogue in hertfordshire, collecting donations. Ia lot of us have families where thisl actually happened only 80 odd years ago and they literally left where they were, with the clothes on their back, so it is our turn to now be the people to help. Young lives prepare for new lives here. The future of the country they called home, so uncertain. Chris mason, Bbc News. Lets return to kabul tonight, and speak to our Correspondent Secunder kermani. Antibody tests are to be widely offered to the public in the uk for the first time in a new programme that aims to find out more about what natural protection people have after getting coronavirus. Our medical Editor Fergus Walsh is here. What more can you tell us . Think of antibodies as soldiers in your new system, on patrol to protect you from coronavirus and you recruit antibodies either through vaccinations or three infection. We know that nine in ten adults in the uk have some level of antibodies but we do not know how big an army you need to fully protect you from covid and that should help tell us. In this study, if you test positive for coronavirus, you are currently infected and you walked in, you will be sent two Home Finger Prick antibody test, up to 8000 people a day in the uk will receive them. The first test is to be done immediately and will show what level of antibodies you built up through vaccination, the second test to be done 28 days later, will show what a boost of antibodies you have got from that recent infection, because it takes four weeks for them to build. People will be texted their results and for the first time you will be able to find out your Antibody Status and it will really help scientists calibrate what level of protection there is from a combination of vaccination and natural infection. That will be really important for deciding things like Booster Doses, a limited number of Booster Doses for the most clinically vulnerable are likely to be done from next month, but it now seems less likely that all over 50s will be offered Booster Doses, at least for now. In just a few minutes we will be looking at the welcome back. In just a few minutes we will be looking at the front we will be looking at the front pages of the mornings papers, but before that. Lets return to our top story and the taliban takeover of afghanistan. As weve been reporting, the talibans co founder, mullah baradar, is in kabul for talks about forming a new government, but what form will this look like . And of course the taliban has promised they will have an inclusive government. Earlier i spoke to vanda felbab brown, whos an Afghanistan Expert at the Brookings Institution Think Tank in washington dc. I began by asking her how different the taliban are now from when they were last in power. That was in 2001. We are all watching that was in 2001. We are all watching to that was in 2001. We are all watching to see that was in 2001. We are all watching to see what that was in 2001. We are all watching to see what real i that was in 2001. We are all watching to see what real change they will have. I think one area we can have a degree of certainty is that many more members of factions and influential leaders of the taliban do not want to destroy the Countrys Economy and do it in post modern tea in the way that the taliban in the 1990s did, but where any facets of modernity were seen as problematic the source of afghanistans problems to be eradicated and destroyed. However, in terms of social issues, freedom, personal and political freedoms, in terms of social issues, freedom, personal and politicalfreedoms, we personal and political freedoms, we are personal and politicalfreedoms, we are still looking at a very authoritarian, perhaps outright brutal group. Presumably a lot of the fighters, the people who describe themselves as taliban supporters, those who have been involved in the insurgency, wont remember what it was like to live under a Taliban Government, wont have been part of that, wont have been born or would have been very young. Is their outlook different, perhaps, from that of the leadership . You know, that is difficult tojudge, we obviously havent seen that yet. 0n the one hand, they were exposed to young afghan people, technocrats who embraced a very different way of life. Whether they have sympathies with that or in fact reject that and see that as corrupt remains to be seen. The one important difference in the younger generation, notjust fighters, but also mid level commanders, is many of them are also plugged into globaljihadi networks through social media, through other means than was the case in the 1990s, when the taliban fighters were very insular. We talk about baradar coming to hold talks on forming a government and the implication of that is the taliban is looking to bring in non taliban figures or voices, perhaps technocrats, into the administration. What are the prospects of that, do you think . Clearly the international community, divided as it is, needs to do as much as possible to induce the Taliban Government to be inclusive in some forms. Include, ithink, minorities and certainly technocrats. The taliban leaders have negotiated with Dr Abdullah Abdullah and former president , hamid karzai. It is not clear to me that they have great incentives to make concessions to them, given how the republic and the Afghan Security Forces folded rapidly. It is also an issue whether they want to include leaders who are so associated with the past corruption and who they decried as apoststates, as stooges of the west, but i wouldnt focus on those leaders, i would focus on whether technocrats are purged, executed or whether they are allowed to work in the Taliban Government. Whether we will see ethnic representation, and of course women, at least in some form, being allowed to work in the government and outside the household. Could this be a bit like iran, then . Immediately after the revolution in 1979, a lot of the technocrats were expelled, a lot of professional people, for want of a better word, were punished and indeed executed, but then not very long afterwards i have certainly spoken to iranian expats in this country, who say relatives of theirs who held senior positions in things like the national banks were urged to come back because the revolutionaries realised they actually needed these people. Is it possible something like that could emerge, notwithstanding the theocratic differences between shia and sunni, but that that could happen in afghanistan . Well, i hope we can avoid the purges and the executions, clearly the reports are distressing. But in my view, an iran like system ultimately is perhaps the best outcome that is realistic, that seems feasible, given the composition of the taliban in outlook. And that inputs technocrats, that inputs some changes of at least the executive powers, legislative body. Women being able to vote. Obviously the elections are corrupt, but nonetheless women can vote, they can be elected, a small number of women around parliament, but much better situation overall afghanistan in the 1990s or even than saudi arabia. So to me, iran, as it currently exists in its political and social order, is probably the outer bounds, the best outcome that we can realistically expect. Finally, let me just ask you something about the economy. And we have read a lot this weekend in this country about big mineral Deposits China has a big contract for a big Copper Mine and so on and that could generate some foreign income. The taliban has been said to be more efficient at Tax Collection than the outgoing government, perhaps, but one area that will worry people in the west is the production of opium, which obviously leads to heroin. The americans and british never managed to stop the production of opium in afghanistan. What is the Talibans Attitude to it . Well, the taliban has a new attitude. We just recently heard the spokesman saying that the taliban wants to bring afghanistan to a drug free state and that is a nice in ambition, it is something the taliban also stated in the 1990s, even as it taxed the Opium Economy was deeply involved in it, as it has been in the past 20 years. There was no easy exit out of the poppy. It is the Blood Life of the economy, a tremendous number of people depend on it, it brings the taliban Hundreds Of Thousands of dollars or at least tens of millions of dollars, rather, or hundreds of millions of dollars a year. And more importantly, it employs very many people. For the past 20 years the two principal sources of employment
