Lets return to our main story, the ongoing crIsIs in afghanIstan. Thousands of people have been rushing to Kabul Airport each day, desperate to flee the country following the talibans takeover. The pictures coming out of afghanIstan really are terrible. The united states has told its citizens to stay away, because of potential Security Threats from Islamic-state'>Islamic State militants. But as we look at some of the operations to get people out of the City, it Is a logIstical challenge, too. Just talk me through what will be planned, what Is going through the minds of the authorities there now to try to get as many people out of the City as they get as many people out of the City as the j get as many people out of the City as the. ,. , as they kand . Mass exodus. Now what you have Is the us military was partly trying to maintain order in space through thIs Is'>Evacuation ThatIs in space through thIs evacuation that Is occurring and yet you have thIs press of humanity, people trying to flee, whether it Is americans, whether it was people who helped americans and now whether it Is just desperate general afghans who want to get away from the taliban rule. Theyre trying to maintain control so they can get planes in and out but as the days click down to august 31, even more desperation from the people they are trying to press and get away. You talk about that trying to press and get away. You talk about that there was not much support perhaps within afghanIstan to try to hold off the taliban for a little longer. I wonder in terms of the logIstical response whether all the logIstical response whether all the authorities were lacking in preparatiOn And they were really caught out by the speed at which thIs happened . ThIs happened . Well, i think it Is re thIs happened . Well, i think it Is pretty evident thIs happened . Well, i think it Is pretty evident that thIs happened . They felt that they had room to keep that airport open and that was always their exit strategy, whether it was flying people from the embassy as we did many times, in a helicopter from embassy as we did many times, in a helicopterfrom the embassy as we did many times, in a helicopter from the embassy, to the military side of couples airport, and then the freedom to operate the runways there. That collapsed as we saw with these scenes of people piling onto Air Planes and grabbing onto american c 17, piling onto Air Planes and grabbing onto american c17, as the military plane left. So the support they counted on from the afghan government and the afghan military to help maintain that orderly Flow Hasnt occurred and im sure that there Is a lot of second guessing within the adminIstration now about the decIsion to close by Gram Airfield which was a Military Airfield which was a Military Airfield they had absolute control of and would have given them more Space And Bandwidth to move out people bagram. There Is, i think, widespread support, and polling supports thIs, for finally ending Military Involvement by the united states and afghanIstan. And i think that the fact that the government and the military has collapsed so rapidly after a tremendous investment in monetarily, and also investment in monetarily, and also in the lives of american soldiers and other soldiers, allies in there as well, thatjust underscores the fact that thIs was not going to be a long Term Solution to be Stability And Future of afghanIstan, and so while these scenes are causing great dIstress here in the united states, the underlying decIsiOn And the fundamental calculus of ending us involvement in afghanIstan, especially coming up on the 20th Anniversary of September 11, it seems to make sense. Given your experience, and having the polling here Shows. Given your experience, and having travelled l the polling here Shows. Given your| experience, and having travelled to the region numerous times in your role, i wonder when you talk about the future what hope there Is, and a lot of the reports we read tell us that afghanIstan Is now very different, but about two thirds of the population that Is classed as young, and therefore are westward looking, perhaps, to have more access to Information And Technology than they ever have before, that they will be a pressure within afghanIstan to change, regardless of whether the taliban to take control . I think there will be a tremendous pressure, we saw there, one of the first Events Secretary Carrie did there was an event which looked at and celebrated the empowerment of afghan women, and the businesses and other ventures they had created. Other ventures they had created. Secretary kerry. They are very much being pushed into the shadows right now, having their images painted over by people either in fear of the taliban or taliban operatives themselves. And so, you know, there Is tremendous pressure on those people. The question Is, Is that popular support enough to overcome the fear of the real muscle but the taliban dIsplay and have utilIsed in the past . You know, presenting a somewhat more public and approachable demeanour outwardly right now, i dont think anybody Is really kidding about what they are like and the brutality they dIsplayed throughout their hIstory. Gorgeous sunshine and the temperatures being cranked up Is what people want, we will see a bit of that. The headline for today Is a mixed one. For most of us it be a better story when compared to yesterday when we saw, you know, a lot of rain, it was cloudy, were still seeing some rain and have a lot of rain, it was cloudy, were still seeing some rain and heavy showers thIs morning, but in equal measure, sunny spells, if not more of those today. Eyes to the south, very little going on down here and that Is because thIs Is an area of High Pressure. ThIs Is the main story for us over the next couple of days, weatherwIse. Notice thIs Weather Front still hanging on in parts of east anglia, and the South East of england as well. But that Is on the way out. Here Is to close up view. Behind it, heavy showers, you might have heard thunderstorms overnight, we saw plenty of those over the past 24 we saw plenty of those over the past 2a hours. A few more are likely today, you can notice thIs line from parts of scotland to the north of england and the midlands, down towards the South East. If you imagine everything to the east of that will be cloudier, greyer times, west best today. Sunny spells dry here as well, brazier across Southern Parts, and those top temperatures probably getting to about 22 or 23 celsius at best. Some of the Showers Today slow moving, a Convergence Line of showers here, but they tend to fizzle out as we head through tonight and turning largely dry, breezy along coastal Parts Tonight and tomorrow as well. The return of some Ist-and-fog'>MIst And Fog patches, quite murky out there for some of us thIs morning. It Is also mild that it will be mild tonight, up mild that it will be mild tonight, up to Tomorrow Morning, would lose tonight of 1a or 15 at best. Now, i mentioned the High Pressure earlier on, lets look at it, here it Is. ThIs Is tomorrow. It Is draped across the uk at thIs stage and Is keeping all of thIs away from us. Lots of these Weather Fronts, and areas of low pressure. Therefore leading to a dry day for most, i think. We Cant Rule out the odd Isolated shower. You can see the Wind Arrows here, we have onshore breezes in the coastal parts. Feeling cooler here, some cloud, a few showers, western areas seeing temperatures rIsing a bit. We could get to 22 or 23 in glasgow, whereas like i said, along eastern coastal parts it will be cooler. High pressure sticking around over the next couple of days, so on the outlook, there we go, should be mostly dry wood temperatures rIsing a bit as well. Fantastic lets Take A Look at todays papers. Many of the papers, including the sunday times, lead with tony Ism'>Blairs CriticIsm of President Bidens handling of the us withdrawal from afghanIstan, which he called imbecilic. The former Ister'>Prime MinIsters comments are also highlighted in the telegraph, also which also has thIs photo of britIsh troops carrying a girl who survived a stampede at Kabul Airport yesterday. The observer reports on the warning from the un that afghans face an absolute catastrophe involving widespread hunger, homelessness, and economic collapse, unless an urgent humanitarian effort Is agreed upon. And the Defence Secretary Ben Wallace has told the Sunday Mail that Is-running-out'>Time Is Running Out for people who want to leave afghanIstan for britain. Lets Ta Ke lets Take A Look at the inside, thIs Is a great story. If you are in whitby you may well know thIs Is a bugbear. Where Is Draculas Grave Is the pretty common tourIst question, apparently. ThIs week were going across the atlantic to america. ThIs Is the mighty mIssIssippi. The economic backbone of early america, Running North to south for more than 2000 miles, carrying the people and cargo that helped to turn thIs country from a Fledgling Upstart into a powerhouse. For much of the 19th century, steamboats like thIs ruled the river. But in 1879, construction began on a transcontinental train line, that would link the newfound prosperity with the Isolated far west. Connecting the Gulf Of Mexico with the pacific ocean. On thIs journey ill be following the railroad that pushed The American Dream along the mexican border all the way to california. Every trip Is unique. Its a moving City. And i will be meeting some of the people who help define thIs unique, diverse and fascinating part of the country. Horn blares. New orleans, my first port of call. Right now in the middle of one of its annual street parties, the french quarter festival. Jazz music plays. The area gets its name from when the french founded the City in 1718, as a strategic port on the IssIssippi-and-gulf'>MIssIssippi And Gulf of mexico. The spanIsh also ran the City, before it was bought by the us in 1803. And you can see all these influences in new 0rleans World famous architecture, food and music. Jazz music plays. That Is New Orleans exactly how i imagined it. A Brass Band going down the street and a whole crowd following them, getting into the vibe. Fantastic. Jazz music continues. Now the City might be best known for jazz, but you can also find a type of music here that ive never encountered before. Zydeco music plays. Chubby carrier Is a Grammy Award Winner and the third generation of a legendary zydeco playing family. The music, zydeco, Tell Me about it. Zydeco music, a lot of people get it mixed up with cajun music. But if you hear Zydeco Music youre going to hear more of blues, rnb, Soul And RockN Roll all mixed into one. Zydeco music continues. ThIs, chubby says, Is the expression of louIsianas back creole community. It Is a bit of african, a bit of french and some caribbean all mixed up. And apart from the accordion, chubby says the essential instrument of the Zydeco Sound Is the one that evolved from hIs grandmothers washboard. Music continues. ThIs was my grandmothers Washing Machine. ThIs was her Washing Machine back in the day. And you hear that rhythm . The buttons on your shirt were making the little sound, and the grandmother was washing clothes at the time, and of course the daddy who was playing says hey, that thing sounds good, it might fit with the accordion. Bring it over here she said you must be out of your mind, thIs Is how i do my laundry. Cani . You should try it, man, yes, yes, yes. It Is all percussion in zydeco. Plays washboard. You have the rhythm going like thIs and everything, thats it thats it. But when you hit the board you lose it. Why . I dont know. Music continues. The streets are packed, and theres a jubilant atmosphere here. But it has been hard won. It s taken more than a decade for tourIst numbers to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Music has helped the City get its mojo back, and festivals like thIs are busier than ever. I feel lucky to have a ringside view. When he point that camera to you, i want you to shake your booty like your mama gave it to you. Crowd cheers. We are going to send thIs back to londOn And let them know how we do it in New Orleans, all right . Zydeco music plays. And then after my frankly dIsastrous ten minute lesson, thIs happens. Slower Zydeco Music plays. Bbc travel here, london, england, yall. Crowd cheers. And the party goes on long into the night, but i have got an early start, and a very long trip ahead of me. Music continues. So that was New Orleans, in all its flamboyant glory. It Is eight in the morning, and today im heading west. Thank you so much. And the service i am taking Is the Sunset Limited train line. The route dates back to 1894, and stretches some 2000 Miles Coast to coast from new 0rlea Ns to los angeles, passing through five different us states. An odyssey, really. So thIs Is a route steeped in hIstory, but i am hoping its also going to Tell Me something about contemporary america, too. Thank you. Back in the day, several railroad franchIses joined up to create thIs pan american rail network. And along the route, significant landmarks, hIstorical and natural, reveal themselves to passengers. ThIs Is a view of the IssIssippi-river'>MIssIssippi River on huey p long bridge. We are right in the middle of two lanes of traffic, which Is a weird feeling. It gets rocky, doesnt it sometimes . One of the tricks with moving down the train Is to keep your feet about Shoulder Width apart, and keep one hand free so you can touch things as you are going through, whether it Is the back of the seats, or we have the Grab Irons which you can use. Have you ever fallen on a customer . Yes. Laughs. Good morning ladies and gentlemen, our next Station Stop will be new iberia approxiately 30 minutes. Train Isor-bruce'>SupervIsor Bruce Is a veteran of the Sunset Limited line. The railroad was what created the united states. It opened up transportation from East To West and that was the big thing, it was transportation of both goods and people. The train might have been instrumental in the creation of modern day america, but Today Rail Use Is way below that of Air And Road travel, which are often cheaper and quicker. So why would anyone take the train . You have areas that you basically dont have planes flying into it, you dont have Greyhound Buses going to so these Isolated places in texas especially and new mexico, thIs Is the lifeblood to get transportation through. Every trip Is unique. Its a moving City. You have people giving birth, you have people. Thats happened . Oh yeah. 0n the train. Sometimes we are an hour away from civilIsatiOn And babies dont wait. Laughs. They cheer. 0n we roll as we cross into texas and are joined by a group of Train Buffs on a day trip. So you are mostly here because of these two . Yes, He Saw Thomas The Train one time when he was about two years old, and since then he has been all about trains. Join the club laughs. I actually have a couple of 1 8 Scale Amtrak cars, and since i got them i thought they looked so good, that i was waiting for a long time to ride on amtrak, and i was thinking it was like, time to hit the tracks. Some people dont get into the smaller areas, the smaller towns, so by going through the back areas, you have an opportunity to expand the mind, because once the mind expands it can never return to its original dimension. My next stop Is the City of san antonio. But not before the Sunset Limited lives up to its name. San antonio Is a modern, prosperous City. In fact now it Is americas seventh largest. It Is very cosmopolitan, and in many ways not stereotypically texa n. But it has one hIstorical attraction which gets to the very heart of what it means to be american, and more especially, texan. ThIs Is the alamo, a legendary site in us hIstory, where in 1836 a small group of troops fighting for Texan Independence were laid siege by a much larger mexican army. The texan forces held out for 13 days before they were overwhelmed and killed. Dr winders, bruce, how are you . But Istorian-bruce'>HIstorian Bruce says it would be simplIstic to see it as baddie mexicans versus goodie americans. ThIs Is a story about people. ThIs Is a story about two nations, thIs Is a story about the idea of what should government be like . Its really the convergence of mexican hIstory and us hIstory. The battle became a symbol of hIstoric resIstance, and the struggle for independence, which the texans won later that year. Company, prepare to load em 12 times. Ready . Load today, the alamo Is one of the states top tourIst attractions, and re enactors help vIsitors make sense of its complex past. So, ive been talked into having the full alamo experience, here. But, ryan, Tell Me. Yep. There Is a point of thIs, Isnt there . Right. ThIs living hIstory. Absolutely. So as people come in here, and they can see how we would have cooked coffee, how we would cook meat over the fire, the kind of foods that we would have had here. Parched Corn And Beef was the food they had to eat during the battle. And so what we try to do Is just let people in on that side of hIstory, give them kind of a taste, the same emotional experience. What do you think was the mood of the people who were in thIs situation, waiting, in a sense, for the mexicans to come . ThIs was home for them. ThIs was the chance for a new life. And so in that, they were willing to fight for something greater than themselves which Is kind of that, in in my view, Thats Kind of the amazing feeling you get any battlefield site. ThIs Epic Fight For Freedom from mexico might be part of the folklore of san antonio, but hIspanic influence Is also a huge part of the Citys current identity. Were only two and a Half Hours drive from the border, and Contemporary Mexicana Is celebrated here, like loteria. When you win, what do we say . Loteria what dont we say . Bingo alright. Bingo. So, if you say bingo, i i wont hear it. We dont use that b word. You say loteria. Alright . Does anybody else have any questions . You join a team, put the T Shirt on, and realIse thIs Is about family, community and winning. El diablo. El diablo the devil. Youve got the devil. The devil. Next card, El Venado the deer. El venado. I think you had it. There it Is. Did i . Oh yeah, El Venado the deer excellent. El melon. You you youve got the melon. I havent got the melon. 0h, we got loteria over here 0h, someones won already yes, you got a winner. Congratulations. Alright, now. We all know loteria. Its important to us because my grandmother didnt know englIsh. I didnt know spanIsh growing up. I wasnt taught spanIsh all that much. I was taught tex mex. So playing with my grandma, it gave us quality time together, because we were both learning. She didnt know englIsh, i didnt know spanIsh. So right there we had a connection during the game. Hola, hello everyone. Im from london. Im going to bring you luck. Ok . You ready for thIs . Im going to bring you all luck. Hows my team doing . Very good El Barril the barrel how we doing out there . Anyone close . Anyone close to winning . Loteria we have loteria are you sure . Seguro . Ok. Applause. Let him know he did good, thIs Is hIs First Time playing right . YourFirst Time . Yeah, yeah, First Time. HIs very First Time playing. So lets maybe lets let him win. Whats it like being Mexican American . Whats that like . I wouldnt change it. I love being tex mex. I love being from texas. Im all about texas. I have a shirt that says i just lucky legal. Which Is true, a lot of people are just lucky legal. Were not illegals. You know, our just because were darker its hot out its hot in texas. Our ancestors are from there, but we were born here, in the united states so dont try to send us back somewhere were not even from. Train horn blares. The next day, and a few more stops down the train line, deep into southern texas, and you find yourself even closer to the mexican border the last frontier, some call it. Alpine station Is the jumping off point to one of americas most remote National Parks. We drive through a vIsta that feels straight out of a western. They call it Big Bend after a twIst in the legendary river here that today separates the usa from mexico the Rio Grande. ThIs Is the Rio Grande welcome to the border yeah. ThIs year marks the centenary of the foundation of the national Park Service in the usa. And what a spectacular asset they are. So just to get our geography sorted, erin, where Is mexico, where Is the usa . So we have mexico over here. There. Yeah . Texas over here. Yeah . The actual border Is the deepest current in the river. ThIs would be the spot where some politicians in the us want to build a border wall. Not sure how theyd manage that here. And its notjust thIs spectacular border with mexico that makes the park unique. So the Chihuahuan Desert the Chihuahuan Desert extends north into new mexico, but thIs park definitely contains the biggest chunk of the Chihuahuan Desert. And then theres the chIsos mountains, and you get up in the high mountains and you get different species of animals like black bears, and mountain lions, and trees. So youve got a big diversity in the flora and fauna. Seven one zero. Ranger doing Foot Patrol in the pantherjunction area. And theres more to thIs wild corner of the earth than its incredible diversity of living species. Big bendd has more Dinosaur Fossils than any other National Park over 90 different species have been dIscovered here, dating back 80 Million years. ThIs Is called a coprolite, which Is fossilIsed dinosaur faecal material. Dinosaur poo Is what you mean. ThIs Is dinosaur poo, that would be correct. Wow. And that Is fossilIsed that stays like that. Hard as a rock. For millions of millions of years. Wow. Thats the First Time ive held dinosaur poo. A new exhibit dedicated to the dinosaurs Is opening at the park in september. It will include these giant bronze casts of fossils. ThIs one Is a crocodilian. ThIs Is deinosuchus riograndensIs we call it the Big Bendd supercroc. You can see from its size its a well named species. Ive seen crocodiles today, and theyre pretty scary. But thIs Is massive thIs Is huge. Right . With about a six foot long skull, it would have had somewhere around a 40 foot long length for the entire animal. Sometimes we find scarring in other Fossil Bones from deinosuchus teeth. So he literally ate dinosaurs. He ate dinosaurs incredible, Isnt it . The landscape here may have remained unchanged for millennia, but the fact it contains 118 miles of Border Zone Is more relevant today than ever. A hundred years ago, the people in thIs region the Border Wasnt a significant part of Daily Life, the river was. So we had families that would live on the united States Side with cousins in mexico. There would be crossing, there would be floodplain farming. There would be a multinational community here. Because the boundary was not considered to be a significant part of Daily Life. Now weve made it a significant part of our politics. Jeanette and i head off to get a high Vantage Point of the Rio Grande river and a mexican town across the border. We have a community of boquillas, mexico, over here, which hasjust a couple of hundred people. But beyond that, if we get into the hills over there, thats protected land in mexico. People can legally move between the two countries at an official Crossing Point in the river. There are also schemes where both sides work together to protect the environment. Sometimes they help us out with protecting our resources from wildfire, and sometimes we partner together to remove evasive species, to help make the entire Rio Grande a better place. So the first half of My Trek Across The Southern Stretch of the usa ends, literally, a stones throw from mexico. Its wonderfully tranquil here, so it seems kind of odd that thIs place has found itself at the Front Line of politics. Im going to relIsh my last moments of serenity, because next week ill be continuing myjourney west, where things start getting strange. You and i have just started something that we cant stop. There Is no big oops button down here. Theres only one problem, right . What was that . We are on thIs thing, and theres no one to turn it off. Does that mean we are on here, like, forever . Well, in theory, that could happen. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with Ben Thompson and sima kotecha. 0ur Headlines Today a week after the taliban regained control of afghanIstan, us Troops Fire Tear gas in kabul to push Back Thousands who are desperate to flee. Adults in the uk who test positive for Covid 19 will be invited to take part in a new programme that aims to find out more about the effectiveness of vaccinations. From tuesday, up to 8,000 volunteers a day will be sent two Antibody Tests to do at home. 0ur Reporter Chi Chi Izundu has more. ThIs research Is trying to work out whether people get antibodies from vaccinations or the virus itself. Antibodies are part of the bodys natural Defence System and they can take time to develop. Most people make antibodies within 28 days of being infected or vaccinated but it can take longer. Unlike some other blood tests, you dont need to fast and you can do the test at any time of day, just dont do your test or post your test on a saturday as it might sit in the post for too long. Any other day Is fine. For the First Time from tuesday, any adult in england, scotland, wales and Northern Ireland who has a positive Pcr Test will be offered the chance to have two Antibody Finger Prick tests at home. Check that your test Is addressed to you before starting. ThIs Is especially important if other members of your household are also having the test done. Lay your kit out on a low table and get familiar with the components. The two tests one to be taken as soon as you test positive, and the other 28 days later, will look for a response to the vaccination, and the other will look at past infection only. The Uk Health Security Agency Is working alongside Nhs Test and trace to monitor levels of antibodies in positive cases. They hope to test up to 8,000 people a day and will also use the data collected to help provide further insight into the vaccines, especially when It Comes to different variants. But people are still being reminded that Testing Positive for antibodies doesnt mean youre immune and that they should still follow Government Guidance if they dIsplay any symptoms of the virus. Almost 4,000 britIsh citizens and eligible afghans have been evacuated from kabul since the taliban regained control of the country a week ago. But to me and my family and probably the international community to, i think their world knows, the afghan people know, that the politics and military has given a different story to the west, to the uk, and to the taliban. I think what the Uk Government should do at the moment Is focus its attention on the evacuation of people and saving as many lives as possible. I know that it can be a story of failure, in many ways, but i think we can still step up and save lives, and that can change a lot of things. Save lives, and that can change a lot of winge save lives, and that can change a lot of things. And do you think the taliban, they lot of things. And do you think the taliban, they have said they are i lot of things. And do you think the l taliban, they have said they are not going to be like they were 20 years ago. Do you believe that . I personally dont believe that, no. From my experience working in Helmand Province with the Uk Forces, the Uk Forces had some locals employed from her mind and some of them were targeted by the taliban, not just themselves them were targeted by the taliban, notjust themselves but them were targeted by the taliban, not just themselves but also their family members. 50 there Is no guarantee that taliban will stay committed to their words, or they will respect human rights. How ho eful will respect human rights. How hopeful are will respect human rights. How hopeful are you will respect human rights. How hopeful are you that will respect human rights. How hopeful are you that your family will be able to come here, you will be reunited, and how hopeful are you for the future of afghanIstan, because we hear constantly that it Is a very different place than 20 years ago, that things have changed, a very young population, a population that Is very eager for change. Do you see any hope in the future for afghanIstan . Change. Do you see any hope in the future for afghanIstan . Well, we are ho eful, future for afghanIstan . Well, we are hopeful. Hopeful, but also we are using our last option, which Is to legally challenge the government and to convince it to relocate my family and those in the same situation. I think it Is the governments a legal duty to help afghans relocate to the uk as soon as possible in the situation. And in terms of hope, of course there Is always hope, and i personally hope the taliban Shows some difference from their regime in 1996, and they proved to be afghan people that they are from afghanIstan, and they are representing the will and the desire of the afghan people, they are respecting womens rights, human rights, socialjustice rights for the ethnic minorities in afghanIstan, these are things that are yet to be experienced from the taliban. But there Is always hope, there Is always hope, people i am in touch with in afghanIstan, with you some of the older generation, they have hopes. When the taliban was last in power, all media outlets were banned, except for one station that broadcast nothing but propaganda. The fall of the militant regime in 2001 led to a new era of media freedom, with dozens of tv channels, radio stations and newspapers. But now, the future for these institutions Is unclear. Saad mohseni Is the chair of afghanIstans most watched tv network, tol0 tv. Welcome to bbc breakfast. It Is good to have you with us. Absolute mayhem. So that Is the situation with The Airport. The City itself Is calmer than it has been over the last few days. The taliban are less vIsible on the streets, the banks havent opened, officers havent opened, but people are slowly coming back out again. The taliban are now back in kabul, the leadership Is back from pakIstan and ohio, and other parts of afghanIstan, it seems the entire leadership Is in town. They are obviously dIscussing what the interim adminIstration would look like. But lots of others, the majority, are staying in afghanIstan, they are continuing to work at our facility, in couple, reporting on events. It Is a strange time to be reporting on events in the country. We obviously are dealing with the taliban. We have a senior delegation that vIsited yesterday, they assured us about freedom of expression, womens rights, and so forth, women being able to go to school, the Deputy Chair of the Ission'>Media CommIssion or cultural commIssion of the taliban was there with hIs team, nonetheless, the reporting, i mean, we watched the news daily, obviously, and we have not detected any change, even at a subconscious level, sometimes reporters tend to hold back, but it seems they are continuing to report as freely as they were a week or two weeks ago. You talked there about your female presenters and reporters, and i know your station highly regarded for the reported you have on the ground, including lots of women asking very difficult questions of the taliban. I wonder what precautions you are taking and whether there Is any concern about whether you need to take those women off the airwaves . Heres 0wain with a look at thIs mornings weather. Hello. Good morning. We have a bit of a change coming up weatherwIse, and thIs Is thanks to an area of High Pressure building. We have had some weather watches out and about thIs morning already, taking photos and sending them in. Thank you very much. ThIs Is newcastle in monmouthshire, and i think many of us are seeing a sunrIse thIs morning, which Is more than what some of us saw yesterday, because there were a lot of loud surround. It Is in a completely bright, dry story across the whole of the uk, however. Scattered showers and also the Tail End of a Weather Front, which Is thIs feature you can see here, thIs cloud. Now, but are still introducing outbreaks of rain across parts of the South East of england, showers lingering behind it, but thIs Is en route, that Is an area of High Pressure settling things down. Here we go. You can see those heavy showers just leaving parts of the South East in the Tail End of that front. You will notice a fume showers appearing, there we go, across parts of scotland and through the north of england under the midlands, eventually curling down towards South East as well. Imagine thIs Is a bit of a boundary, really, it Isnt quite that clear cut, but to the west, drier and brighter and a bit of sunshine, whereas further east, we are hanging onto the clouds, Ist-and-murk'>MIst And Murk will be reluctant to leave us as well. Breezy across Southern Parts. Lets Take A Look at todays top temperatures. Probably get to about 20 to 23 celsius at best. In the Sunshine Battlefield very nice. Let us cast an eye up on thIs evening. Those showers are still there, as you can see, but they are fizzling out. The return of some low cloud, Ist-and-fog'>MIst And Fog in places. Patches of grey appearing here on the graphics. Our temperatures probably getting down to 1a or 15, another mild, muqqy down to 1a or 15, another mild, Muggy Feeling first thing Tomorrow Morning. But it Is High Pressure thatIs morning. But it Is High Pressure that Is running things. There it Is. ThIs Is the big picture for tomorrow, if you like. Doesnt look much different, as we look further on thIs week. We will see that in a second. The High Pressure keeps Weather Fronts at bay, into the Wind Arrows here, just coming down and meeting parts of the east coast. Now, that means we will have a breezy, making it feel cooler, some showers appearing or there, but much of england, wales, scotland and Northern Ireland at thIs stage will be dry, bright, with some sunshine, cooler along eastern parts of england. Tomorrows top temperatures, 22 and 23 celsius. I said the picture doesnt really change as far as the Pressure Chart Is concerned. There Is tuesday, the High Pressure still with us. That Is still with us as we look towards wednesday as well. So the next few days, everyone, it should be mostly dry and bright with a bit of sunshine, cooling off as we cast an eye up on The End of the week, but of course ill keep you posted. That Is how it Is looking. Thanks very much. 1 in every 100 school children have tourettes syndrome, for which theres currently no cure and limited support services across the uk. A new study thats hoping to gather important data about antibodies in people who have had coronavirus will begin thIs week. From tuesday, adults in the uk who book a Pcr Test will have free access to an Antibody Testing scheme. To find out what thIs means, werejoined by gp, dr ellie cannon. Antibodies are part of our immune system, so i are part of our immune system, so they are proteins in the blood. That recognIse an infection that you had before. If you had an infection, covid or the vaccination then you will have developed antibodies. They are specific to covid and when they are specific to covid and when they are in contact with covid again, perhaps you come into contact with the infection again, they can defend your body and they can pat away the infection. So yeah, it tells us if somebody has had the infection. Is adding to all of that data that we already have, it will perhaps tell us where we need to vaccinate more people, which areas of the country. It Is another surveillance. So really another tool for us to put up those defences against covid. So thIs programme Is only for people who have tested positive for covid. How long before we need to know who has antibodies and who doesnt without having to have a Covid Test . There are Antibodies Surveillance studies that Go On around the uk. We are ready test the antibodies in blood donors. Many of us will see much more in the way of brightness then we saw yesterday and there are some lovely sunrIses already thIs morning, captured by the weather watchers. There Is they had mine for today, it Is a mixture of sunny spells and scattered showers, some of the showers will be heavy, some of the showers will be heavy, some of them have been heavy, we have thunderstorms and we also still seen some rain thIs morning. ThIs Is the Weather Front, some rain thIs morning. ThIs Is the weatherfront, here, and thIs void Is an area of High Pressure. There it Is. That will build over the coming days and lead to something much more settled and drierfor the majority of us across the uk. So lets pin some detail. There Is the Tail End of that Weather Front, a couple of showers drifting out of the South East of england thIs morning as well. Then we enter a dry Speu Morning as well. Then we enter a dry spell of weather, but not for long. You can notice some showers bubbling up you can notice some showers bubbling up in scotland, parts of Northern Ireland and northern england. ThIs line then curves towards the South East. Breezy across Southern Parts. Top temperatures getting to 22 or 23. As i said earlier, western part seeing the best of any sunshine and brightness, west Is best, with 23 celsius in the sunshine. Feeling pleasant enough. Cloudier and a Bit Cooler because eastern parts. Overnight we see the return of low clouds and Ist-and-fog'>MIst And Fog in places. Some of that will linger thIs morning and will return tonight with those of 1a or 15 celsius. Tomorrow the High Pressure returns. So there Is a snapshot of things tomorrow, a dry and bright day, a bit breezy on the eastern coast of parts, but i think those temperatures will be quite similar to today. That Is how it Is looking. We will be back at the top of the hour with the latest headlines, including the latest for afghanIstan. Time now for thIs Weeks Edition of click with spencer kelly. Jump on in. Thank you. So youre not using the Steering Wheel at all . Youre using a. Oh, wow laughter. Which way are we going . Which way are we going im at nasa in houston where lucienjunkin Is taking me for a spin. Using both a Steering Wheel and a joystick, you can point thIs vehicle in one directiOn And drive it in another. You feel the forces in your tailbone. Oh, i can feel the forces in my tailbone and if that seems really confusing, well, it Is. But thIs Is drive by wire technology, which means the onboard computer works out which way you want to go, and then calculates what to do with the wheels. All right, so, well just go thIs way. ThIs Is just one of many experiments into how we might live, work and drive on the moon or mars. Although thIs vehicle may also pave the way for smarter cars in smarter cities back down here on earth, where i have to say, parking may be one of the coolest things you get to do. No way come on, man. But before we start driving around celestial bodies, we need to get there first. In the days of the moon landings, only two competing countries were locked in battle, driving Space Exploration forward. Now, in the race back to space, the power s shifting. Chinas Change Lt Probe was the first spacecraft to land on the far side of the moon. And europe, India And Japan are all pushing forward with their own space programs. Back in the us, nasa plans to get back to the moon by 2024, but now it has competition from private individuals an idea that would have been laughable 50 years ago. Rival billionaires elon musk, founder of spacex, and Jeff Bezos, who owns blue origin, are racing to populate the moOn And mars. But what kind of person would actually be on these spacecraft . The first people to go to mars will be rIsk taking adventurers accepting that they may have one way tickets or have a small chance of return, and they will be probably financed or sponsored by one of these private companies. At nasa, we dIscovered a little known department where these rIsk taking adventurers live. Right now, there are four astronauts inside a spacecraft on a mIssion to phobos, one of marss two moons. WhIspers but theyre actually in there. Yes, in thIs tiny habitat, volunteers are locked away for 45 days on a simulated mIssion, with cameras and scientIsts monitoring their every move. ThIs Is nasas human Exploration Research Analog hera for short. Gfx. Inside the module, the crew Is poked and prodded in different psychological experiments, from Sleep Deprivation to diminIshed privacy, all to fine tune a critical component that could make or break any future mIssion to mars the humans inside the spacecraft. The primary purpose of hera Is to learn about the effects of Isolation-and-confinement'>Isolation And Confinement on people. So a lot of the studies that we do are behavioural or psychological in nature, looking at the type of Isolation from people. So youre really only talking to or in contact with the other crew members that are in the vehicle with you or Ission-control'>MIssion Control thats supporting you. Yeah, astronauts on future mIssions to mars have more to worry about than the toxic soil, the deadly atmosphere and high levels of radiation. They also have to worry about each other. And its hard to say which of these would be more likely to result in someones death. And its consIstent, low Level Stress over time. Little things start to grate on you because the Stress Kind of heightens how you react to the things around you. So the sound of somebody chewing the cereal next to you might be fine at first. And then 45 days later, you really, really dont like that sound. Even for an astronaut, the psychological demands of a journey to mars will be extraordinary. The spacecraft will only be the size of a small flat, and the Round Trip will take almost three years. Add in four different personalities cooped up together and you may run into some problems. And with a range of characters needed, you never know who you could end up with. The Habitat And Workload are designed to mimic a real mIssion as closely as possible. And nasas scientIsts throw in lots of elements to try and ensure that the volunteers forget that theyre actually part of an experiment. If mcc talks to the crew, they ask a question, it takes five minutes to get to the crew, and then they answer, it takes five minutes to get back. So a ten Minute Round Trip for a questiOn And answer. So the whole idea of creating a mIssion scenario, youre going to phobos and youre, you know, youre going to do an eva, youre going to pilot a small spacecraft to the surface. You know, all that keeps them really excited and engaged in the simulation. The goal here Is notjust to study the effects of Isolation-and-confinement'>Isolation And Confinement, but also to work out how to put together the perfect team for extreme space travel. Its all about the mix. And thats one of the things that were looking at, Is what Is that right mix . Or given the particular mix of people, you know, you have, lets say, one strong personality and three less strong personalities, what would we expect that to play out like . So what kind of roles do you need to have a successful team for a Ission'>Space MIssion . And they were looking notjust at the functional roles, you know, a commander ora medic, an engineer, but theyre also looking at the social roles and found that those were just as, if not more important for those long duration mIssions, having somebody thats providing Humour Or Entertainment for the crew, thats way more important. And it wontjust be down to humans to decide what the right social mix would be. Masses of data Is generated from these experiments, making successful social interactions quantifiable. One of the research studies thats actually going on Is looking at a way to get a little bit ahead of the Personality Problem by developing an algorithm where you can take the Background Information on an individual S Personality tests, that sort of information, plug it into the system, and based on the characterIstics of all the people that youre putting in that team, figure out how theyre going to work together, whether its the right mix of people. Unlike these potential martian voyages, we may think that three years in Isolation Is a bit bonkers. However, from Jeff Bezos to buzz aldrin, many are dreaming of trips to, and even living on, the red planet. But Lord Martin rees, britains astronomer royal, doesnt actually think that most of us are suited to space. Nowhere in the solar system anywhere Is as comfortable as the top of everest or the south pole. And so thats why i think the idea of Mass Emigration Is a bit crazy. We have to bear in mind that space Is not a place for human beings, except for adventurers, the kind of people who do go to the south Pole And Top of everest. What do the Hera Crew think about the experiment . Well, we caught up with them, unsurprIsingly out in the fresh air, shortly after they left the habitat. You know, were all very similar. If we had one very extroverted person, maybe a strong personality that was slightly different than the group, that might have negatively affected the outcome. If you put four extroverts in there together, theyre going to drive each other crazy eventually. Maybe four introverts arent going to be able to come together as a team as much, because theyre more inwardly focused. You want a good blend of people, who are adaptable to not only the situation, but each others personalities. You have a mIssion to mars. The goal Is so huge that youre extremely motivated. I mean, the aim of the analog Is to be one step closer to put humans on mars. I can barely imagine being in such a situation. Your motivation Is so huge, i think that even you can i overcome anything. WhIspers im afraid thats all weve got time for in our short version of click in space. Theres much more in the full length version, which you can see on iplayer right now. And if you have any comments on thIs fascinating journey, wed love to hear from you were on social media on youtube, instagram, facebook and twitter, bbcclick. Thanks for watching and well see you soon. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with Ben Thompson and sima kotecha. He sets out hIs argument in a 2,700 Word Article, publIshed on hIs website, in which he paints the taliban as part of a bigger picture what he calls Islam'>Radical Islam a desire to turn the religion into a political ideology thats exclusionary and extreme. Taking thIs on, he says, Is a strategic challenge comparable to the decades long threat the west faced from communIsm, and when looked at like thIs, the decIsion to pull out of afghanIstan Is a mIstake. If the west wants to shape the 21st century, it will take commitment, he concludes, through thick and thin. The Issue, though, in western countries, in democracies, Is long term open ended Military Commitments do require public support. ChrIs mason, bbc news. Our political correspondent, lone wells joins us now. Lone, whats been the reaction to hIs comments . It has made a massive splash. Earlier thIs week we heard President Biden claimed he had no criticIsm of hIs afghan policy by allies. I think that argument Is pretty hard to make now when splashed across most of the pages thIs morning Is a very damning attack we heard from Tony Blair of what he describes as thIs Imbecilic Retreat and obviously as we heard there from chrIs, it was Tony Blair who led the Uk Forces into afghanIstan in 2001 alongside the us. Of that political slogan to enter the forever wars. Compared to what it was like 20 years ago, he has also criticIsed the fact that he has made thIs claim that Ist-group'>EveryjihadIst Group Around The World would have been cheering at thIs withdrawal and saying that if we were to treat Islam'>Radical Islam as more longer term strategic thing to tackle than trips would not have been withdrawing. I think we will see reaction develop thIs over the next couple of hours what Is coming out of downing street as an interesting response to what we see coming out of the uk. Adults in the uk who test positive for Covid 19 will be invited to take part in a new programme that aims to find out more about the effectiveness of vaccinations. From tuesday, up to 8,000 volunteers a day will be sent two Antibody Tests to do at home. Our reporter Chi Chi Izundu has more. For people in the uk with loved ones in afghanIstan, the past week has been an anxious wait to find out if theyre safe and if theyre able to leave the country. The Class Teacher sent me a Text Message on either tuesday or wednesday to say i think thIs family are in afghanIstan so i cold Dad Straightaway to find out and had the worst news that only half of the family were at home in the uk and the other half were trapped in kabul. Dad was not sure what to do so i thought ive got to do something, thats not ok and the two basic tenets of our school and any Head Teacher are anybody in our School Community needs to be happy and safe and if we have community members and community Is beyond the school gates, of course, we have to do something about that and get them to your place of safety so that Is when the process of finding out what i needed to do which of course was all new to me, there Is no handbook for Head Teachers about what to do if a family Is trapped in a War Zone so i did what i could and made the decIsion to bring it to the attention of the media in the hope we could expedite the evacuation. I spent a couple of hours on the internet and through the on the internet and through the School Twitter Account found there was an account set up by the foreign office for Uk Citizens trapped in afghanIstan and with the mp for Nottingham South and she and her team have been superb. They have been working together round the clock first about to thIs family evacuated but when we eventually managed to get them through the cordoned, the most terrifying time Is a 32 hours thIs family was trapped surrounded by the taliban and there were no us or britIsh ships that at the time, it was a really terrifying situation with the taliban controlling the compound they were almost corralled into and that was a really bad time. You can imagine the relief when we managed to get them through into The Airport. Then of course the family started to Tell Me about their extended family members in extreme danger of execution because of the rules they played either in the Judiciary Or Army and i really dont want to name anybody because they are still there and i know one of those family members has already had hIs id confIscated and told by the taliban that as soon as uk and us security forces leave he will be beheaded so they are under no illusion what would happen to him. They know who everybody Is and where they live and lots of people had to go into hiding. It feels like my moral imperative now to do what i can, teacherfrom nottingham, a Head Teacher to make sure that those people in danger of their lives are evacuated to safety with us. Briefly, amanda, you have said they spent more than 30 hours in that cloud. We have heard reports of people being crushed to death. Are you worried about them when they get backin you worried about them when they get back in terms of ptsd or psychological impact on such young children who have witnessed thIs . Absolutely. We have a fabulous counselling services school, a national charity cold police to be who are trained in post traumatic therapy. We will see sunny Spells Today across the uk but still scattered showers and some will be heavy. ThIs weather still causes some Issues. Issues Is probably too dramatic, it Is causing rain across South Eastern parts. We also have these showers drifting out to the South East of england. From thIs area and up through the midlands to the south of scotland and Western Parts of scotland we will see showers stop if you imagine everything pretty much to the west of thIs will be brighter, we will see some sunny spells here with us to the east of us we will tend to hang onto low cloud, Ist-and-fog'>MIst And Fog. Through tonight any lingering heavy showers will leave and then we move into a window of drier Weather Stop turning breezy across eastern coastal parts and temperatures down to 14 or 15 celsius. The outlook for the next couple of days, eastern coastal parts are easier and cooler and most of us will see an improvement with some sunny spells and temperatures rIsing just a touch as well. We are constantly reminded that afghanIstan Is a very different place, but i wonder how you might have suggested how things could have been handled differently if we were to get the chance to do thIs all over again . ThIs all over again . Well, it was a very different thIs all over again . Well, it was a very different place thIs all over again . Well, it was a very different place at thIs all over again . Well, it was a very different place at the thIs all over again . Well, it was a very different place at the time i very different place at the time when very different place at the time when i very different place at the time when i was there. It was in the early when i was there. It was in the early years when i was there. It was in the early years of the campaign and it was nothing like as active in terms of terrorIst was nothing like as active in terms of terrorIst attacks and numbers of western of terrorIst attacks and numbers of western forces there and numbers are britIsh western forces there and numbers are britIsh forces there as it occurred later britIsh forces there as it occurred later so britIsh forces there as it occurred later so at britIsh forces there as it occurred later so at that time there was a relatively later so at that time there was a relatively small threat. There was some relatively small threat. There was some threat, but a relatively small threat some threat, but a relatively small threat to some threat, but a relatively small threat to britIsh forces and other international forces there. I think the campaign, as it progressed, there the campaign, as it progressed, there were the campaign, as it progressed, there were clearly many mIstakes made there were clearly many mIstakes made during that campaign. It Is very easy made during that campaign. It Is very easy to identify them in and easy very easy to identify them in and easy to very easy to identify them in and easy to identified some of them at the time, easy to identified some of them at the time, i easy to identified some of them at the time, i think one Issue that i would the time, i think one Issue that i would highlight as being particularly significant was our failure particularly significant was our failure to particularly significant was our failure to apply enough pressure to the pakIstan government to cease supporting the taliban as they did. They created it and they give it a so much they created it and they give it a so much support during the 20 Year Campaign so much support during the 20 Year Campaign that it has enabled it to. Et campaign that it has enabled it to get to campaign that it has enabled it to get to it campaign that it has enabled it to get to it Is campaign that it has enabled it to get to it Is now without pakIstani support, get to it Is now without pakIstani support, the taliban would not have had anything as successful as a campaign had anything as successful as a campaign as they have had. And the second campaign as they have had. And the second Area Campaign as they have had. And the second area where we could perhaps have done second area where we could perhaps have done it differently was effectively to allow the afghan government to maintain full control over the government to maintain full control over the country. When we were in investing over the country. When we were in investing so over the country. When we were in investing so many resources and lives investing so many resources and lives into investing so many resources and lives into that country, we should have lives into that country, we should have had lives into that country, we should have had more of a say in how the country have had more of a say in how the country was have had more of a say in how the country was a run at them we actually country was a run at them we actually did. When i was there in 2003. Actually did. When i was there in 2003, president karzai would not move 2003, president karzai would not move without american permIssion, even britIsh move without american permIssion, even britIsh permIssiOn And then that move even britIsh permIssiOn And then that move to a situation where they had a that move to a situation where they had a lot that move to a situation where they had a lot of that move to a situation where they had a lot of freedom and abused that and became incompetent and corrupt as well and became incompetent and corrupt as well in and became incompetent and corrupt as well. ,. ,. , as well. We have been talking about unsettled Weather Overi talking about unsettled weather over the last few days. We are turning a bit of a page now. Which, for most people, Is good news. We had a bit of brightness. We had a lovely sunrIse thIs morning, captured by many of our weather watchers so thank you very much for these photos you have sent in. It Is not like that for everyone, however. We have some grey skies overhead in places, some grey skies overhead in places, some are Ist-and-murk'>MIst And Murk as well. But we are also seeing some blue sky. Love thIs. Do you know what the Cats Name Is . I dont know, but the lady Is alpaca lady. I hope the cat does not mind getting wet because there are some cloud. Many of us will see some of those Showers Today. We are tipping the balance towards something drier, something brighterfor the towards something drier, something brighter for the majority, towards something drier, something brighterfor the majority, but we still have at those showers so it Is not a completely dry story. Nor Is it a completely clear study. Lets kick these off with the satellite image then. We have an area of High Pressure down here and here we have a Weather Front. ThIs pressure down here and here we have a weatherfront. ThIs Is pressure down here and here we have a Weather Front. ThIs Is what was with us yesterday and brought as outbreaks of heavy rain. We saw those understands as well. Many of us saw and heard those. It Is not quite leaving us yet. Over the past couple of hours there have been where the spells of rain in the South East of england so we see some heavy showers around where that Is as well. ThIs Is how it looked an hour or so ago. These showers of bright colours here indicating heavier downpours. We think about that, brightening up a bit of sunshine on offer. Not everywhere, though. The show getting going. From scotland down three north of england, the midlands. It occurs around the South East. ThIs Is a Convergence Line of showers. If we were tojump over the Convergence Line of showers. If we were to jump over the east of it, thIs Is where we are going to see cloudier conditions, whereas west Is best. We will see brighter conditions and a bit of sunshine as well across parts of Northern Ireland, west of coasts seeing parts of that as well. Wales, the south west. Breezy further south, lets peruse those temperatures at 22 or 23 Celsius Willjust about do it. That will feel warm enough in the sunshine as well. As we look towards the evening, we still hold on to wesley showers. Some will be heavy, some will be slow moving, potentially thundery as well. They will be fizzling out and it will turn largely dry. We start to import a bit of a breeze along eastern coastal parts. I will get back to that in just the second. And those of 14 or 15 celsius. As with thIs morning, Tomorrow Morning will be a bit grey and murky, but the differences we have thIs area of High Pressure above us at thIs stage. That Is stealing the weather towards something drier, brighter, more settled but to that breeze i mentioned, what we will notice tomorrow Is along eastern coastal parts, from east yorkshire, lincolnshire, towards the South East, it will feel cooler in the breeze. We will see some sunshine here, some Ist-and-fog'>MIst And Fog patches potentially a bit lethargic to clear. Top temperatures 2223 celsius will just about to clear. Top temperatures 2223 Celsius Willjust about do it tomorrow, i think. Celsius willjust about do it tomorrow, ithink. The Celsius Willjust about do it tomorrow, i think. The High Pressure Is still there as we look towards a jersey 22 or 23 celsius. Over the next couple of days, most of us will see an improvement. Drier and brighter weather, see an improvement. Drier and brighterweather, nojumping brighter weather, no Jumping Temperature about brighterweather, noJumping Temperature about any sunshine 23 celsius. It will feel pleasant enough, quite warm and most of us should be mostly dry. Gorgeous the First Time ive heard temperatures described as lethargic. Thtas all from us thIs morning.
