And endangered Species Kenya conducts its first ever Wildlife Census. Hello and welcome. President biden has been speaking about the crisis in afghanistan. He said the united states has made clear to the taliban that any attack on the Evacuation Mission from kabul would be met by a swift and forceful response. Mr biden said he was in constant contact with the taliban about the mission and that 13 Thousand people had been evacuated from the country since the 14th of august. Lets hear some of what he said. We are going to do everything, everything we can to provide safe evacuation for our afghan allies, partners and afghans who might be targeted because of their association with the united states. But let me be clear, any american who wants to come home, we will get you home. Make no mistake, this Evacuation Mission is dangerous. It involves risks to our armed forces and it is being conducted under difficult circumstances. I cannot promise what the final outcome will be, or that it will be without risk of loss. But as commander in chief, i can assure you that i will mobilise every resource necessary and as an american, i offer my gratitude to the brave men and women of the Us Armed Forces for carrying out this mission. They are incredible. And as we continue to work the logistics of an evacuation, we are in constant contact with the taliban working to ensure civilians have safe passage to the airport. The president was also questioned on whether hed seen the us lose credibilty over the chaos surrounding the pullout. From our allies around The World. I have spoken to our nato allies, our allies and the Secretary Of State and as has the general. Excuse me, the secretary of defence. I have not seen that, the exact opposite, i have gotten. President biden also warned the taliban must show restrainst or The Regime would not be recognised on The World stage. I am going to be working with our allies to see to it that we can bring international pressure on the taliban. They are looking to gain some legitimacy, they will have to figure out how they can maintain that country. There will be harsh conditions, strong conditions we will apply and it will depend on whether they get help based on whether how and well they treat women and girls, how they treat some of its citizens. For more onjoe biden s speech i spoke with our Washington Correspondent barbara plett usher. I dont think his critics will have felt he gave good answers. He very strongly defended his response to the chaos in afghanistan to the way his administration had responded to the requests, the crush of people who want to leave. He stressed they had managed to secure the airport, they were conducting the biggest airlift, one of the largest airlifts in history and that it was dangerous circumstances. And refused to basically acknowledge any responsibility for having planned badly, for miscalculating, for any failure. These are criticisms coming from not only lawmakers but warnings from his own diplomats, saying the evacuation should have happened more quickly. Saying they should have anticipated the speed with which the taliban took over kabul. He was basically sticking to the defence of his decision, saying that nobody, the consensus is that the taliban would not act that quickly and the Contingency Plan had been in place and it was being executed. He gave a lot of details to the americans about the numbers that had been evacuated and the risks involved and he pledged to bring all americans home and he pledged to be committed not to abandon afghan allies. He knows he has to respond to criticisms, but he did not acknowledge any mistakes. Meanwhile, with reports of executions and torture in afghanistan by the taliban, thousands of people continue to mass at kabul s airport, in the hope of being airlifted out of the country. Nato says so far, more than 18,000 have been airlifted this week. 0ur afghanistan correspondent, Secunder Kermani and cameraman malik mudassir, have us sent this report from kabul on the despair of those, still trying to escape. You may find some of the scenes distressing. Get back Panic And Chaos close to Kabul Airport. British soldiers guarding a secure compound for those being evacuated. British passport holders in the crowd, desperately trying to get through. This is my british passport. Like this Uber Driver from west london. Hes got kids. Weve been waiting. How long have you been here waiting . I came morning, five oclock. Still, im waiting here. In the last three days, im trying to go inside. And they wont letl you into the hotel . Even though the embassy has told you to come here. Yes, he said i had to go here. Even more distressing scenes at the main entrance to the compound. British soldiers trying to keep the crowd back. This is a scene of total and utter chaos, many of the people here dont have any permission to board an Evacuation Flight but they are so desperate that they just turned up here anyway. Thats making it extremely difficult for those who have been told to come here by the british embassy to get through. My family, my newborn baby. Amongst those trapped by the crowd, this former British Army interpreter. His wife gave birth just two weeks ago and hes deeply worried about the baby. Maybe i lose my kid and maybe she is not good. She is not good, my wife. You Cant Stay here. I Cant Stay here, look at the situation, look at the dirt on the floor here. And, until now, im here since morning, i came here, taliban lashed me on the back. Most of the people here are in a state of total confusion. They dont know how they can, but just want to leave the country before the Evacuation Flights end. What makes you think you will be able to travel . This woman says she was a player on the national basketball team. I am so scared, because im a girl. My life is in danger. What. As the day goes on, some of those who are meant to be here eventually get through, including the family with the young baby. Many others are still struggling, though. Even more who want to leave but cant will be left behind. Get back now Secunder Kermani, bbc news, kabul. Meanwhile, here in the uk prime Minister Borisjohnson says he has full confidence in the Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab, after criticism over his handling of the crisis in afghanistan, in the days leading up to the fall of kabul to the taliban. Mr raab has come under pressure, forfailing to call the afghan Foreign Minister last friday, after being advised to do so by officials, to discuss evacuations. The call was delegated to a Junior Minister, but was never made. Mr raab now says he was prioritising dealing with Security And Capacity at Kabul Airport. The bbc s political correspondent, Alex Forsyth reports. Arriving in a place of safety. This past week has been a scramble to evacuate brits and afghans who worked with them, planes drafted in to get people out. But could more have been done . There he comes. The Foreign Secretary, seen heading to downing street yesterday, has been under pressure. Are you going to resign, Mr Raab . No. For not calling his afghan counterpart last week about translators who had helped foreign forces. Tonight, the Prime Minister said. The whole of the government has been working virtually round the clock, hitting the phones to do what we can, and to make sure that we get as many people back as possible. So how did events unfold . Last friday, Dominic Raab was advised to call the afghan Foreign Minister. He was on holiday in crete. He says The Call was delegated to a Junior Minister because he was prioritising Security And Capacity at the airport on the direct advice of the director and the Director General overseeing the crisis response. On saturday, the taliban reached the outskirts of kabul. The Foreign Secretary was still on holiday, by now no call was made and the government said that was down to the rapidly deteriorating situation. On sunday, the taliban took kabul. The Prime Minister chaired a Cobra Meeting and the Foreign Secretary flew back from holiday. The government says securing the airport was the right priority and meant more than 1600 people have been evacuated so far, though not everyone. Its not safe for us. This interpreter, who we are not identifying, worked with british forces. Hes been told he is eligible to come to the uk but hasnt had the paperwork, so hes hiding in afghanistan. Every second, im checking my e mails, because, you know, it is not in my control. I have four kids and im thinking about my wife, im thinking my life is quite important for them. With the Foreign Office under pressure, some Tory Mps have rallied round. Supporters of the Foreign Secretary have said today he is hard working and suggested one Phone Call would not have made a material difference, given the pace of events on the ground, but this has become a focal point forfrustration, even anger, among those who question the Governments Readiness for and reaction to what happened in afghanistan. Theres been little coordination of Security Matters across whitehall itself. 0urforeign policy is reactive, not proactive, it is lacking confidence in its ability to lead and lacking coordination. The Prime Minister, after meeting some of those the government has brought to safety, said the uks effort over 20 years in afghanistan has changed the lives of millions. Its actions now could affect the lives of many more. Alex forsyth, bbc news, westminster. Stay with us on Bbc World News, still to come. The poorest country in the americas is in urgent need of medical, Food And Sanitation assistance, experts say. Over 2,000 people have been killed. 0ur correspondent, james clayton, reports now from the small town of les anglais, where an entire parish is in mourning. To get to the small town of les anglais, you have to take the coastal road. The town is two hours from les cayes, and the Road Snakes through earthquake scarred villages and even through a river. This is whats left of the towns church. A Mass Christening was about to begin just before the earthquake struck. The church had been filling up with people. Dafica had woken up excited. Her daughter was one of the dozens of children to be christened that day. Translation the church already had a lot of people inside, so i was looking for a good place to sit. I put my bag down and just as i was about to sit down, the earthquake struck. Everyone started running but each side of the church was full of people. I was holding my baby. I tried to get out of the front. I was so nearly out and thats when it collapsed on me. Dafica suffered injuries to her head, back and legs, but survived. Her daughter esther died in her arms. Translation we were inseparable. When we went to the church, we were two, but i came back alone. I will never forget her. This is a town still in mourning. 22 people died here in the collapse, including many children. This man shows us belongings laid out in the cemetery across the street, including a christening veil, as yet uncollected. Sometimes i ask myself, does god exist . He says. Its too much, its too much. Nearly a week after this earthquake and the true scale of the devastation is still revealing itself, and thats why its feared that the Death Toll here could rise further. Some help has started to arrived here, desperately needed food and clothes. But this earthquake has turned communities upside down. Trauma that may never heal. James clayton, bbc news, les anglais. Lets look at some of the days other news. A woman has been found clinging to an upturned inflatable dinghy in the atlantic, around 220 kilometres off the coast of spains canary islands. Shes believed to be the only survivor from a group of migrants who were on board its thought as many as a0 people died. China has formally revised its laws to allow couples to have up to three children. The plan is to encourage larger families, and reverse falling birth rates. It follows concerns from some banking and financial clearances companies about the material being made available. Onlyfans said it was evolving its guidelines so it could continue to host an inclusive community. Kenya is conducting a national Wildlife Census the first of its kind in the country. Its home to vulnerable and endangered species, including lions, giraffes and the only two surviving northern white rhino species in The World. The bbc s Ferdinand Omondi reports from the Marine Parks and Forest Reserves of coastal kenya. Kenya is undergoing the biggest Animal Count in its history. From above, researchers record wildlife in the countrys open lands and check on them, including human Activity Close to protected areas. This aerial count is just one method Kenyas Wildlife Service is using to count all of the countrys wildlife. This is one of Kenyas Forest reserves. Theres lots of wildlife here and that includes hundreds of elephants. Im told, but it is so difficult to spot them from above even with an extra pair of eyes and as we are tracking them on foot. Jamila is one of rangers tasked to count the elephants on foot, but in this forest, the elephants know where to hide. So researchers count by the consistency of their dung. We were taught how to see the age of the dung, to know if it is fresh or its over 2a hours. So when you see like this one, it is over 50 centimetres, no destruction, and also when its fresh, it smells, it has an odour, it is also smooth in colour. So weve just been driving around the Forest Reserve looking for elephants and then right in front of our path, there is a Herd Right in front of us. Actually, its a bigger group than what you can see because weve spotted some crisscrossing, we can see some feeding and others playing and the rules here is that the elephants have the right of way so we just have to wait. Kenya has carried out wildlife surveys before but this is the first time the country attempts to count all species on Kenyan Lands and waters. Particularly the census has been done on the endangered species. The elephants, the rhinos and a few others. But we dont have proper census for giraffe, for pangolin, we dont have census for zebras. This count is also important for marine conservation. This here is a mangrove forest, a Breeding Area for fish and so fishing here is regulated and the researchers hope that the results of this census will help show the impact of such conservation efforts on marine life. Kenyas Marine Parks alone generate over 1 Million annually but the government says they can do more. It wants to use its marine data to accelerate the blue economy and the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth and jobs. Conservation is very central to the blue economy. You need to manage the environment better, so with this type of information, you are going to identify those critical areas that need to be zoned out. This is kenyas biggest ever animal census and its results could encourage better conservation for future generations. Ferdinand omondi, bbc news, coastal kenya. Indias Taj Mahal will re open for night viewings On Saturday for the first time in more than a year. The vast white Marble Mausoleum in the city of agra is a huge tourist attraction, and viewing it by moonlight is a particular draw. But viewings After Dark were ended completely during the Coronavirus Lockdown imposed in march twenty twenty and never reinstated. Hello again. For most of us, its been another cloudy day, and that cloudy theme is one thing that weve noticed a lot actually this month. Its been a particularly dull month so far. But like yesterday, there were a few gaps opening out in the cloud. Inverness sitting in one of these, so a bit of sunshine here, but the gaps have been fairly few and far between. The main driver of todays weather, low pressure to our west. Weve had this Weather Front moving into western areas bringing outbreaks of rain, particularly for Northern Ireland, but weve also seen some rain at times in Southwest England and wales as well bringing these rather dull looking skies into pembrokeshire. The rains been quite heavy here for a time as well. Now, overnight tonight, that rain is going to quite erratically push its way northwards and eastwards. Its coming along in pulses. There will be some heavy rain, then it will turn a little bit lighter and drizzly. Some Mist And Fog patches around the hills and the coast as well. Its quite murky for some, and a mild night, temperatures no lower than 16 in both liverpool and for hull as well. Now, the weekend is going to start off wet with these Weather Fronts slowly progressing eastwards. Sunday, the better of the two days of the weekend, in that, the rain will ease to a mixture of sunshine and showers. Saturdays forecast then, weve got the rain with us. And the rain is probably going to be heaviest, really, across wales, northern england, perhaps the midlands as well. Many of us will see some pulses of rain through the day, perhaps northern scotland one of the drier areas, and later in the afternoon, wales and parts of Northern Ireland and Southwest England brighten up with some sunshine. But there will be some heavy showers following in here. Temperatures generally high teens, might reach about 22 celsius across eastern most areas of england, but for most, temperatures a bit below par. Now, for sunday, as i say, this is going to be the better of the two days of the weekend. Cloud will tend to thin and break up with some sunny spells coming out. There will be some heavy showers around, though, maybe a few thunderstorms. These are likely to affect parts of central and eastern scotland, central and eastern england, drier Southwest England, wales, Northern Ireland, western scotland, for the most part with some sunny spells. But, there is a big change in the weather on the way for next week, as this High Pressure builds in. Winds coming down from scandinavia, so no Heat Wave on the way, the hottest air stays in Southern Europe and around about the mediterranean, but that said, next week is still looking fine. And in the August Sunshine that well have quite a bit of next week, its going to be a pleasantly warm with temperature generally for most areas reaching the low 20s, perhaps something a Bit Cloudier towards the end of the week. Thats your latest weather. Bye bye. This is Bbc World News the headlines.
