Hundreds desperate to get a flight to freedom. Even passing toddlers over barricades to troops guarding the perimeter. Their hope that if they cant get out, their children might. This gives a sense of the scale, he a thin line of british soldiers trying to keep order. Here a thin line. The heartbreak of having to turn away those without the right papers. Britain also says it will stay at the airport as long as the americans remain. But it is the taliban who Control Access. There have been acts of apparent defiance to their rule already, with some residents in kabul parading the old national flag. It is independence day. But it is the taliban who are now in charge and will decide what happens next. Jonathan beale, Bbc News. Our correspondent, secunder kermani, is in Afghanistans Capital Kabul and can bring you this update. In large parts of kabul of Everyday Life is resuming, the taliban saying they hoped Government Offices and banks will open up soon. There are pockets of huge chaos, one, of course, being the airport. A massive crowd is still gathered outside the entrance there. Many of them without any kind of the user. They are still hoping, somehow, to be able to leave afghanistan. The taliban, who are in charge of security there, have been firing regularly into the air, beating the crowd back with sticks. And im told that most foreign nationals are being able to reach the airport safely. But the taliban are, at times, preventing even those afghans who have permission to board the evacuation flights from doing so. One particularly disturbing episode that is being reported is that of a baby being passed over a barbed Wire Fence by a desperate parent. Other afghans who are due to board these evacuation flights are being able to do so after being taken in on convoys arranged by officials. There is also chaotic scenes outside the canadian embassy in the centre of kabul. That was in what used to be known as the green zone, the heavily fortified area that was protected by afghan security forces. It is now sealed off by the taliban, hundreds and hundreds of people have gathered outside there. Filling come on blank pieces of paper, their names, their local passport details, local id details, and they are just passing these pieces of paper to the taliban, hoping that that will somehow reach canadian officials. And that they will become eligible for a canadian visa. Im not even sure if theres any canadian staff left in that embassy. And it seems very unlikely that many of these people will be granted any kind of but it gives you an insight into the kind of frenzy thats been whipped up. Barbara Plett Usher is in washington. The president admitting it could go on longer than he wanted or planned. Yes, he said they would stay until the Last American was out. He didnt explicitly make that same promise for americas afghan allies, although that is the goal. But taken together, thats Tens Of Thousands of people and they have less than two weeks to get them all out with the problems youve been hearing about at the airport. They may stay longer than The End of august. Aside from that, he was quite defiant in his interview. Still, he admitted no failures, no mistakes. He even said that there could not have been a withdrawal without chaos. Even though, just last month, he said the withdrawal would be orderly. And even though that chaos is clearly putting afghan lives in danger. When it comes to the danger for women, for womens rights, he said there is no way to enforce womens rights with the military occupation. You have to do that through economic and diplomatic pressure. Again, he insisted the Intelligence Community had not predicted that the afghan Government And Army would fall as rapidly as it did. The intelligence has been quite defensive about this. They said they had predicted a rapid fall as one of their scenarios. But just yesterday, Mr Bidens top general said no one had predicted it would happen in 11 days. So, the pentagon and the White House are on the same page about that. I dont know if theyre going to be on the same page about something else Mr Biden said that he denied that the military had advised him not to withdraw, had advised him to keep a small stabilisation for thin afghanistan. So, that is different from everything we have been hearing. We have been hearing the military did advise him to keep some troops on the ground. And he was also asked, Mr Biden, but what are the threat of terrorists regrouping in afghanistan would increase now. He acknowledged that possibility but said the threat was greater elsewhere. That Alqaeda And Isis were metastasising and reforming in Syria And West africa and other places. And the americans really needed to focus more of their resources in those areas had not so many resources in afghanistan. Thank ou, many resources in afghanistan. Thank you. Barbara labour is accusing the Foreign Secretary of putting the lives of afghan interpreters who worked with British Forces at risk. Dominic raab was advised on friday to personally ask his afghan counterpart for urgent help to evacuate them from the country. But he didnt make the Phone Call. For now, the Foreign Secretary is going nowhere. Share for now, the Foreign Secretary is going nowhere going nowhere. Are you going to resin, going nowhere. Are you going to resign. Mr going nowhere. Are you going to resign, Mr Rabah . Going nowhere. Are you going to resign, Mr Rabah . But going nowhere. Are you going to resign, Mr Rabah . But if going nowhere. Are you going to resign, Mr Rabah . But if he miss an opportunity to get people out of afghanistan sooner . While the taliban were advancing, Dominic Raab was on holiday here in crete. Rather than lounging on the beach, were told he was working at making regular Phone Calls. Last friday, officials here at the Foreign Office advised him to make one such caller urgently, to the afghan foreign minister, for help in evacuating interpreters. But its understood the job was delegated to a junior minister. And labour argues that a resigning matter. The minister. And labour argues that a resigning matter. Minister. And labour argues that a resigning matter. The idea that the forei. N resigning matter. The idea that the Foreign Secretary resigning matter. The idea that the foreign Secretary Wouldnt resigning matter. The idea that the foreign Secretary Wouldnt pick resigning matter. The idea that the foreign Secretary Wouldnt pick up| foreign Secretary Wouldnt pick up the phone as the taliban were advancing and standing At The Gates Of Kabul to see what we could do to help and prevent afghanistan descending into a basis for terror again seems to me to be extraordinary. And we believe that he should resign and be replaced with somebody who is actually up to doing thatjob. With somebody who is actually up to doing that job doing that oh. Other Opposition Arties doing that job. Other Opposition Parties believe doing that job. Other Opposition Parties believe dominic doing that job. Other Opposition Parties believe Dominic Raabs l doing that job. Other Opposition Parties believe Dominic Raabs time is up. The snp s Ian Blackford says he must resign or be sacked by the Liberal Democrat leader, sir ed davey, insists he must go. So swift was the taliban takeover that kabul had already fallen by the time Dominic Raab got back to the uk on sunday night. And today, one of his cabinet colleagues, said there was very little be collapsing afghanistan government could have done to help. Last afghanistan government could have done to help done to help. Last friday, the aft han done to help. Last friday, the afghan government done to help. Last friday, the afghan government was done to help. In a packed Commons Record disappearing government. In a packed Commons Record for disappearing government. In a packed Commons Record for an disappearing government. In a packed Commons Record for an emergency. Disappearing government. In a packed| Commons Record for an emergency city yesterday, the government was accused of complacency. This Phone Call adds to the general impression here in westminster that perhaps Dominic Raab has not entirely been on top of events in afghanistan. Publicly, largely his colleagues have been supported but some conservatives have been grumbling about the Foreign Secretarys adding up about the Foreign Secretarys adding up the crisis. After what has been described as the big aspar foreign Policy Failure in modern times, it is perhaps unsurprising that the Foreign Secretary is feeling the heat. Described as potentially the biggest foreign Policy Failure. Peter saull, Bbc News. The origins of the War In Afghanistan lie in the attacks of september 11, when nearly 3,000 people were killed, the vast majority in new york. Alqaeda had found a safe haven in afghanistan, which is why the us decided to invade. As Aleem Maqbool has been hearing in new york, some of those directly affected now fear that the events of recent days have once again made them unsafe. In the soaring skyline of lower manhattan, there remains a Heart Rending gap where the towers of the World Trade Center once stood. Their footprints turned into memorials for the victims. Within a month of the horrific acts that took their lives, 7,000 miles away, Military Operations were being launched. Well, the War In Afghanistan, of course, was started In The Name Of those who died at this spot nearly 20 years ago. In trying to find their killers, in trying to ensure an attack like that never happened again. But some of those relatives Behind'>Left Behind are now among those who are furious at how it has all ended. Ao year old Katherine Wolfe from swansea was working on the 97th Floor of the north tower, when it was struck by a plane. No remains of hers were ever identified. Her husband, charles, says there is no question the war was justified and that he had certainly celebrated the death of osama bin laden. But that hes been shocked by recent events. The situation that just occurred in afghanistan over the weekend was inexcusable, absolutely inexcusable. What they did was Pull Out. How they did it was absolutely wrong, absolutely wrong. After this debacle last weekend, i did not feel proud of our leaders. I feel proud about our nation, but not our current leaders. Each room has a little Piece Ofjoe in it. Christine lem feels a huge amount of pride for her husband, joe. He was in the new York Police at the time of the 9 11 attacks and was one of those who pulled bodies from the rubble. That day was the reason he re enlisted and went to fight in afghanistan. But it was there that he was killed. They went over there to make america safer. After what happened at 9 11. So, how are we safer now, with the taliban taking over . Im sick to my stomach. Looking at a 20 year war, where joe and over 2,300 soldiers have died in the afghan war. All to be given back to the taliban. Joe was specifically killed by a taliban suicide bomber. Christines son was just four years old when he saluted the coffin of his father. For all the sacrifice, there are suddenly fears the chaos far away means a new, more dangerous era here. Aleem maqbool, Bbc News, in new york. One of the uks most recent afghan arrivals told the bbc he faced the prospect of being beheaded if he stayed in his homeland. He was resettled In Glasgow and spoke to our reporter connor gillies. It was the hardest and the most difficult time i had in my life. This mans life is under threat. Terrified by the taliban, this mansjob as an interpreter in afghanistan made him a target. If i stayed, i would be, you know, tortured by taliban, and consequently get killed by them, because they perceived interpreters to be traitors. There were many incidents over afghan interpreters. They were tortured, they were killed, they were, you know, beheaded. To give a clear message to others to stop helping internationalforces. So, you and your family feared that, because of yourjob, that you could have been beheaded . Yes, that was, you know, the worst thing could happen to someone. He, his wife and three year Old Girl fled their home, their entire livelihoods, arriving in scotland four weeks ago, under a resettlement programme. It came to me difficult when i had to say goodbye to my father. I didnt have the chance to hug him because of covid. I told him a good buy from a distance and he started crying. That was the only part of it i had to leave Behind. The community, the friends and of the Social Status i had over there. I had a good job, you know, i had opportunity to do my masters degree. I left everything Behind. And it was, you know, an entire fearful situation over there. I had to make a very difficult decision over living or getting killed by insurgents. He is now too scared to be identified overfears his family he Behind'>Left Behind will be murdered. It makes the life, eh, not meaningful to you, because youre waiting for the threat, youre waiting for your death. This charity, refuweegee, was born in the wake of the syrian disaster, resettling people here in scotland, who were fleeing war torn countries. Now, it supports up to 150 refugees every single week, with things like Emergency Food parcels. And they are about to get a lot busier. I do think we should be aiming higher. I think that we have capacity, weve certainly got Housing And Weve got the commitment. The syrian agreement showed us that local authorities across scotland were local authorities across scotland were keen to support families. Some of those were keen to support families. Some of those local authorities only received of those local authorities only received two or three families. They now know received two or three families. They now know the script. They understand how to now know the script. They understand how to do now know the script. They understand how to do it. Now know the script. They understand how to do it, they understand the type of how to do it, they understand the type of support families will need and they type of support families will need and they are ready. And now that youre here, what was it like the moment that you touched down in scotland . Did you breathe a sigh of relief that you are no longer in afghanistan . In here, it was a sense of relief and the life was completely different in here. An afghan refugee In Glasgow, speaking to our reporter connor gillies. The time is 19 minutes past one. Our top story this lunchtime. Dramatic new footage emerges of the continuing chaos outside the kabul airport, as people try to flee the taliban. British troops are helping to control the crowds and process peoples documents. The Uk Government pledges to stay in afghanistan as long as the us maintains control of the airport. And coming up in sport on the Bbc News channel, the latest on the Opening Day of the womens open golf at carnoustie, where the World Number one and olympic champion, nellie korda, is amongst the favourites. A new study has found that both the pfizer and the astrazeneca jabs are still offering good protection against the Delta Variant of covid. The research, led by Oxford University, is the largest survey of Covid Infection in the uk. It suggests pfizer works best initially, but theyre equally as effective in the long run. Naomi grimley reports. For months, the Office For National Statistics and Oxford University have been asking hundreds of thousands of us to do swabs for their research. Do you have any symptoms . Its the biggest study of its kind in the world. Unlike other studies, which have looked at how effective the vaccines are at keeping people out of hospital, this one has looked at how good they are at preventing any infection by the Delta Variant. The study showed the pfizerjab had 93 effectiveness two weeks after the second dose, compared to 72 for the astrazeneca vaccine. The researchers say that Pfizers Performance then falls faster, and they believe that after four to five months, the two vaccines may converge, having similar effectiveness. I would stress that both the vaccines are still giving really, really good protection. And its important to remember that actually pfizer starts out at around 15 better effectiveness than astrazeneca, which is far more my thing, then we could ever have imagined. So whilst it does decline, its actually declining from a really high starting point. There is another way the Delta Variant is changing the vaccine landscape. Although vaccinated people are much less likely to get infected, when they do they appear to have the same levels of virus in their Nose And Throat as those who havent been jabbed. The their Nose And Throat as those who havent beenjabbed. The researchers say this shows the potential for people to pass on the disease, even if they are protected against serious illness. If they are protected against serious illness. , , serious illness. The main message is that of the direct serious illness. The main message is that of the direct protective that of the direct protective effects that of the direct protective effects of these vaccines is excellent. If you get the vaccination you are in a much better Place Vaccination you are in a much better place in vaccination you are in a much better place in terms of getting sick. But the Ability Place in terms of getting sick. But the ability of the programme to actually the ability of the programme to actually stop the virus from circulating around in the population, it is less good than we had hoped population, it is less good than we had hoed. ,. Population, it is less good than we had hoped had hoped. Israel has already started offering had hoped. Israel has already started Offering Booster had hoped. Israel has already started Offering Boosterjabsl had hoped. Israel has already i started Offering Boosterjabs to had hoped. Israel has already started Offering Boosterjabs to the most vulnerable after its government became worried that the Pfizerjab Wasnt dampening down transmission quite as much as hoped. The findings of this latest study will have to be weighed up by Government Advisers here, before they decide if the uk should follow suit. Naomi grimley, Bbc News. One week on from the fatal shootings in plymouth, the inquests into deaths of the five victims and the gunman have opened. Our correspondent Sarah Ransome is in plymouth. Tell us about the hearing . It was a very short hearing this morning, victoria. The coroner, ian arrow, heard from the senior investigating officer in this case, Detective Inspector Steve hambly. He told the court that shortly before maxine davison, the governments mother, was shot, thered been an argument between the pair. It is a Community And City that has been completely rocked and shaken to its core and its clear from the visuals and the tributes and the services held, that it is going to take a long time for the community and the city to come to terms with what happened. And the city to come to terms with what happened what happened. Sarah ransome reaortin. The uk is to offer an initial £1 million in support to haiti, as the country recovers from saturdays devastating earthquake. A royal Navy Ship is also being sent to the region to help the humanitarian response. More than 12,000 people have been injured and hospitals have been left overwhelmed. Our correspondent James Clayton is in the village of marceline, near the epicentre of the quake. A huge crowd has gathered you to watch a Search And Rescue team, to try and see what they can Pull Out of the rubble Behind me. There were 48 apartments here, if you can believe it, and they disintegrated during the earthquake. They are trying to see if they can find anyone, but ive been told by one of the Search And Rescue team that at the moment theyre only pulling out dead bodies. They also said that when they smell a dead body and i have to say you can smell death right now they go in, the caterpillars stop and they try and pull someone out of that rubble. And thats the story really, that we have been seeing across this region over the last few days. People desperately trying to search for the relatives. All too often its unsuccessful after a8, 72 hours. There may well be dozens of people still underneath this rubble. We simply dont know. And thats one of the reasons why were really not sure how many people have died in this earthquake. Nhs Waiting Lists in wales have reached record levels. Figures forjune show more than 624,000 people were waiting to start treatment across the country. Lets speak to our Wales Correspondent Tomos morgan in swansea. That figure you just mentioned there, victoria, that is almost 20 of the population in wales. That is a rise of more than 40 from pre pandemic levels. When it comes to people waiting for treatments such as orthopaedics and trauma treatment, those waiting for more than nine months, that has gone up by more than 800 since before the pandemic. It is not only nonurgent treatment that has been impacted by the pandemic. It is also A E and ambulances. With more people being vaccinated and covid restrictions being eased, people are more willing to use emergency services. They have seen the busiest month on record. We have also had the worst performing month on record for both of them last month injuly. Now there is some good news. More people are now receiving Cancer Treatment for the first time. And there is a slight decrease in the number of people waiting more than 12 months. Now why is this happening . Well, of course, covid has had a massive impact. Nonurgent surgeries have been delayed here slightly longer than in england. Some doctors frustrated by that fact. I have heard from a few of them. There are still restrictions in place for covid. Things Cant Move so quickly. More people are being added to the waiting list. The Health Minister has pledged an extra £140 million to help ease the Waiting Lists. That is on top of the 100 Million she has already pledged. However, she has said she expects the situation to get worse before it gets better. And this lunchtime we have just had a response from the Royal College Of Art emergency medicine, which paints a stark picture. They say without a comprehensive plan and substantial support, there is a thread that the Health Service here in the face of a harsh winter, may not be able to cope. Harsh winter, may not be able to co e,. ,. , harsh winter, may not be able to coe. ,. ,. , ~ , harsh winter, may not be able to coe. ,. ,. , ~ ,. Cope. Victoria. Thank you very much, Tomos Morgan Manchester United and scotland legend Denis Law has announced hes been diagnosed with dementia. The 81 year old says he has alzheimer s and Vascular Dementia. Hes the latest former player to reveal he has the degenerative brain disease. He said he was trying to be positive but added that the road ahead would be hard, demanding and painful. Yorkshire County Cricket Club has apologised to former Player Azeem Rafiq, after an investigation into allegations of racism. Last year, he claimed institutional racism at the club left him close to taking his own life. Lets speak to our Sports Correspondent katie gornall. Tell us what has happened . Well, victoria, this is the latest step really in what has been a long running process. It all started nearly a year ago this week when azeem rafiq, a former england under 19 captain, who last played for yorkshire in 2008, gave an interview to Wisden Cricket in which he alleged that the yorkshire Cricket Club was institutionally racist and that his experience they had left him contemplating suicide. Now that and other interviews prompted yorkshire to launch what they called an independent investigation. It was originally meant to report back in christmas of last year, but it has taken until now for that report to be completed. Today they are not releasing the report but they did release a statement in which they said many of the allegations were not upheld. But they go on to say that several of the allegations made by azeem were upheld and that sadly, historically, azeem was the victim of inappropriate behaviour. This was clearly unacceptable, yorkshire side, and they expressed their profound apologies. Yorkshire stopped short of any admittance of rafiqs claimed that he suffered racial abuse. Rafiqs claimed that he suffered racialabuse. Rafiq rafiqs claimed that he suffered racial abuse. Rafiq has responded to the statement on social media, questioning the clubs reference inappropriate behaviour. We should of course get more detail on all of this when the report is published. Yorkshire say they aim to make eight and its recommendations available in the coming weeks. They hope that the report can be a catalyst, they say, for important changes at the club. Thank you very much. Time for a look at the weather. Heres chris fawkes. So far this month we have seen their average amounts of rainfall, near average amounts of rainfall, near average temperatures, but one thing that sticks out it is been a pretty cloudy month. Certainly over the next few days we will keep a lot of cloud. This is the view from space showing todays extensive cloud sheet
