As the militants negotiate with politicians on forming a government. The stench from a Staffordshire Landfill Site one localfamily is at the High Court, to argue the fumes could be causing health problems. Nandos says its been forced to Close stores after running out of chicken, blaming supply issues. I dont think a dictionary has enough words in it to describe me. You know, im such an amazing, complicated. Im more like a sensation, an idea. The best way to describe me is with a fragrance. And, the Comedian Sean Lock, best known for 8 out of 10 cats, has died at the age of 58. Good Afternoon And Welcome to Bbc News. The Prime Minister has been criticised by mps on all sides of the house, as parliament was recalled for an Emergency Session to debate the taliban takeover of afghanistan. In a packed House Of Commons, borisjohnson said the collapse of afghan government forces had taken everyone by surprise, and he denied thered been a failure in the uks Emergency Planning. The Labour Leader Sir Keir Starmer accused the government of staggering complacency in underestimating the taliban threat. The government has unveiled a scheme to resettle up to 20,000 afghans fleeing the country. 0ur Political Correspondent Chris Mason was watching the debate. As Mps Return here, so too do those who want to be heard by them. A demonstration demanding those afghans who worked for the uk in afghanistan can now move to live here. Order across the road and in the chamber, the commons as we have not seen it since Before the pandemic. Full and noisy, passionate and angry, too. The sacrifice in afghanistan is seared into our national consciousness, with 150,000 people serving there from across the Length And Breadth of the united kingdom. The government has announced today the setting up of what it is calling the afghan citizens Resettlement Scheme. Ministers say it will welcome up to 5,000 afghans to the uk in its first year, with a total of 20,000 in the coming years. There is also the afghan relocations and Assistance Policy to help what the government describes as locally employed staff who worked for the uk and whose lives are now under threat. Its thought 5,000 afghans will qualify by The End of this year. We owe an obligation to the people of afghanistan. There should be a Resettlement Scheme for people to rebuild their lives here, safe and legal routes, it must be a Resettlement Scheme that meets the scale of the enormous challenge. But what the government has announced this morning does not do that. Afghan Refugees should not and could not wait for up to five years for safety. They need safe passage and they need safe passage now. The government says it is proud to welcome afghans here, but the Prime Minister added. The bulk of the effort of this country will be directed, and it should be directed, Mr Speaker, to supporting people in afghanistan and in the region, Mr Speaker, in order to prevent a worse humanitarian crisis. Within moments of getting to his feet today, Boris Johnson faced persistent, probing scrutiny, from the Opposition Benches and from his own side, too. There was, for many, one Overarching Question. How was this allowed to happen . From the prime Ministers Self evident lack of Influence And Clout in washington, to his negligent inability, yet again, to master his Brief And Plan properly for the withdrawal, Todays Occupant of number ten has become a national liability. Im afraid i think this has been a major setback foR British Foreign Policy. We boast about Global Britain, but where is Global Britain On The Streets Of Kabul . A57 british servicemen and women were killed in afghanistan. Those who served alongside them brought the chamber to silence today. Like many veterans, this last week has been one that has seen me struggle through anger and grief, and rage. The feeling of abandonment, of not just a country, but the sacrifice that my friends made. Ive been to funerals from cornwall to dunblane. Ive watched good men go into the earth. Taking with them a part of me, and a part of all of us. And, he concluded. Mr speaker, this is what defeat looks like. Its when you no longer have the choice as to how to help. This doesnt need to be defeat, but, at the moment, it damn well feels like it. Todays debate here will continue all afternoon. Chris mason, Bbc News. 0ur political Correspondentjonathan Blake is at westminster. We have heard some powerful speeches today. Very powerful interventions, in a packed Chamber Which we havej in a packed Chamber Which we have not seen at the likes of Before the pandemic, but this was a return to Business As Usual in some ways, mps recalled from their Summer Break to debate the fall of the afghan government and the rise of the Taliban In Afghanistan. As you head, borisjohnson defended the governments actions, saying the main mission was a success, over the 20 years that the uk had a Military Presence alongside the us and other nations in afghanistan but there simply was no way to continue that without The Americans there as well. He was criticised by the Labour Leader Keir Starmer for complacency, use the word repeatedly, and then by a succession of conservative backbenchers, Theresa May the former Prime Minister saying this had been a failure of uk Foreign Policy. Some of the most powerful contributions to the debate coming as you saw that from those who have themselves served in afghanistan in the British Forces. Expressing their Disappointment And Dismay and disbelief at what has happened in the country over the last few days and weeks. The debate will continue for the next few hours and it will be concluded by the Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab but beyond the collective catharsis that mps have experienced to date, very little will change because there is no vote and there is no called on the government to do anything differently to what it has done now beyond the very forceful and powerful interventions from members on all sides of the house that we have seen today. On all sides of the house that we have seen today. Thanks for oining us. We will be covering that debate more on Bbc News but you can follow it in full on bbc parliament, as well. Lets discuss this more with Mohammad Asif from the afghan human Rights Foundation he fled the Taliban In Afghanistan in the 2000s and organised a protest in glasgow which took place earlier today. Thanks Forjoining Us. The protest was, no more foreign wars, welcome Refugees'>Afghan Refugees, what were you calling for . We Refugees'>Afghan Refugees, what were you calling for . Calling for . We are calling for Boris Johnson calling for . We are calling for Boris Johnson and calling for . We are calling for Boris Johnson and the calling for . We are calling for Boris Johnson and the british| borisjohnson and the British Government, there should not be any cap on the Refugees'>Afghan Refugees because Britain And America is responsible for the current mess in afghanistan. What i was Hearing Today, was 5000 afghans in the first year, and after one yet this is going to die down, nobody will bother. After one year. We are really angry, 20 years ago, myself along Withjeremy Corbyn and others, telling the British Government, tony blair, that a Military Intervention will cause further problems. The taliban are a bunch of terrorists, No Doubt, but this was not really the answer. If you armband in the entire nation and throw them in the sea, this is literally Britain And America, i dont know how much power at the british have over america, but this is abounding the afghans the biggest betrayal in our history this is abandoning the afghans. I said to tony blair, who is going to be the replacement for the taliban . Tony blair replied to my letter and he said we are not going to abandon you. But this is what has happened after 20 years. Im not a fan of foreign troops in afghanistan but once you have gone into afghanistan you should have finished the job and brought a political settlement to the conflict in afghanistan, the longest conflict in europe and america, and have an achievement in afghanistan rather than giving the keys to the power in afghanistan to the taliban. Im asking now for people to sue the British Government, who send their kids back to afghanistan, for abandoning the people of afghanistan, because this is really shambolic and there should be an inquiry. We know what went wrong. They were only there to empower their friends, the warlords and the drug lords, the remnants of the former holy warriors, as they were called, but they should be an inquiry, and an apology for the people of afghanistan. For why you have done this to us. You people of afghanistan. For why you have done this to us. People of afghanistan. For why you have done this to us. You have said it is not the have done this to us. You have said it is not the starting have done this to us. You have said it is not the starting of have done this to us. You have said it is not the starting of the it is not the starting of the conflict, it was the starting of the conflict, it was the starting of the conflict, not the manner of ending it, that was the problem, how should it, that was the problem, how should it have ended when the afghan government itself has been widely reported to struggle with issues of corruption. What exactly could the us and the uk and the other foreign countries have done to help in forming a more stable afghanistan . Im not a politician and im not sitting here to pretend that i do not know what happened. Every british politician knows what happened in afghanistan but my point is they should have sought a political solution and im not sure that Britain And America have the power to bring in different warlords and drug lords, including the taliban, to a negotiating table. Make them sit down and have a regime, some sort of political solution, for the afghan conflict, but what Britain And America did was empower the most corrupt people, these were their friends, and i empower the most corrupt people, these were theirfriends, and i know these were theirfriends, and i know the people who were picked from london and washington and paris. They were dropped in afghanistan, the most corrupt individuals wearing a suit and tie. We have corrupt individuals wearing beards, yes. However, they empower them against the wishes of afghans and 20 years later they wash their hands and now they are blaming us, why are you blaming us . We had no power over the taliban. You came in by force, you terrorise the afghan people, it has cost 400,000 innocent afghans, no one talks about them, who were killed eitheR By the taliban oR By foreign troops or warlords and drug lords, the friends of Britain And America, but now you are blaming us. It is yourfailure america, but now you are blaming us. It is your failure and you should be man enough, to take the responsibility and put your hands up and say we apologise to the people of afghanistan for failing you and your country and your nation. Back to the announcement your country and your nation. Back to the announcement of your country and your nation. Back to the announcement of the bespoke Resettlement Scheme which was announced Last Night, you have questioned that figure of 5000 this year and questioned that figure of 5000 this yearand 20,000 questioned that figure of 5000 this year and 20,000 overfive questioned that figure of 5000 this year and 20,000 over five years, questioned that figure of 5000 this year and 20,000 overfive years, so realistically what are the figures when it comes to Refugees'>Afghan Refugees . It when it comes to Refugees'>Afghan Refugees . It is up to Priti Patel and Boris Johnson. 5000 in the first year is laughable. Because after all, johnson. 5000 in the first year is laughable. Because afterall, it johnson. 5000 in the first year is laughable. Because after all, it is Britain And America who is responsible. I live in Scotland And Nicola sturgeon kindly said that scotland will take Refugees'>Afghan Refugees so why not bring the Refugees with no cap on them, take as many as you can, because you are responsible for the mess you have created, send them to scotland, manchester, birmingham, every area across britain. Ive spoken to the british people especially in scotland, they welcome Refugees from afghanistan right now in the current Situation. The other thing i would like to mention, i hear the Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab talking about talking indirectly to the taliban, but why not speak directly to the taliban . You have empowered them along with your friends america. You have empowered them along with yourfriends america. Pressure you have empowered them along with your friends america. Pressure them. Now they are in power, they have to abide by the international rules of law, so it isjust abide by the international rules of law, so it is just the start. The taliban are trying to portray a positive image but after a few months, this attention will die down and the Media Attention on afghanistan will die down and it had a band can do what they wanted to do, as they did Before 9 11 and do, as they did Before 9 11 and the taliban can do what they wanted to do. Before that they were terrorising afghans. Suddenly, the Western World realised, there is a regime called the taliban, but when they were terrorising us on a daily basis in afghanistan nobody said a word about afghans, because their lives dont matter to the west. All they wanted was an imperialist power in afghanistan, to empower their friends who were corrupt, and morally bankrupt and who stole every penny and every piece of Aid Money and every bit of taxpayer money, they were all corrupt people who just bought a one Way Ticket and fled to Britain And America and other parts of the world. Thanks for oininu us. In the afghan capital kabul, british and international troops are continuing to organise evacuations from the citys airport. The aim is to bring 1,000 afghans a day to the uk. It comes as the talibans top political leaders returned to afghanistan from qatar where many were in exile. 0ur diplomatic correspondent Paul Adams reports. The taliban leadership back on home soil. Mullah abdul ghani baradar, one of the movement founders, returned to kandahar Last Night, mobbed by supporters still celebrating their success. A moment to savour for the man seen last year signing a deal with the trump administration, which helped set the scene for this remarkable return to power. In kabul, an uneasy calm. Taliban fighters everywhere cementing control over a city that has changed out of all recognition since they were last here. A place where, for all the countrys many problems, people have dared to hope. Translation i urge the taliban to let the youth and women continue their studies so they will advance. We will develop and achieve more gains, more than what we have achieved in the past 20 years. Many still want to leave. This was the scene this morning near the french embassy. For all the Talibans Talk of reconciliation, many are scared, willing to speak but not be named. At the airport, evacuations continue, the operation gathering pace. The Ministry Of Defence says it expects half a dozen flights to the uk in the next 24 hours. Yesterday we got about 700 people out and we are trying to speed up the pace over the next few days and we will put everything we can on these to try to get everyone we need to get to safety as soon as we can. But this is still a country on edge. Injalalabad, which fell to the taliban at the weekend, a gesture of defiance. The old afghan flag held aloft. Gunshots clearly something the taliban will not tolerate. Afghanistans new masters have little time to celebrate. Those whove managed the Countrys Economy in recent years conscious of the enormous challenges ahead. Unfortunately, the economic Situation is going to decline. Its almost a certainty that Donor Aid will decline, it is almost also certain that assets will be frozen and that will lead to deterioration in the macroeconomic environment. Afghanistan is at a crossroads, so much about the future uncertain. How the taliban will rule, how its new subjects, and how the world will respond. Paul adams, Bbc News. Lets find out more aboubt whats happening on the ground in afghanistan. Firing has been heard in jalalabad as flag waving protesters defied the taliban. 0ur Correspondent Dan Johnson is following developments from delhi. What is the latest . What are you hearing . We are hearing they have i been protests and signs of defiance, the hoisting of the afghan flag. In jalalabad, the city in the east Closer to the pakistan border, but the defiance has been met with a serious response from caliban fighters who have opened fire on the crowds. Taliban. This is the kind of force people expected, if people show defiance, and maybe this will justify in the eyes of the taliban, the sort of measures it would take, perhaps clamping down, lockdowns, enforcing curfews on people, perhaps. Early days but this is the first signs of this and it looks like they are not going to take that sort of defiance lightly. Another thing that struck me, talking to Refugees'>Afghan Refugees in delhi, they are overwhelmingly blaming the afghan president Ashraf Ghani for the collapse of the country and for the taliban taking over so quickly and that could be another thing that plays into the hands of the taliban because it seems like any support for the former government has disappeared in the way that they disappeared in the way that they disappeared from the country and there are reports that Ashraf Ghani fled with up to 170 million. That is astounding. Fled with up to 170 million. That is astounding. What sort of reaction is astounding. What sort of reaction is there from the region to the Press Conference from the taliban yesterday . Press conference from the taliban esterda . ~. , Press Conference from the taliban esterda . ,. , yesterday . Many people have been astonished just yesterday . Many people have been astonished just by yesterday . Many people have been astonished just by the yesterday . Many people have been astonished just by the Spectacle Yesterday . Many people have been astonished just by the spectacle of| astonished just by the spectacle of that Press Conference, by the sheer front of the taliban, that they were willing and able to put on such a positive face. Everyone is waiting to see if the reality is anything like the rhetoric and people are deeply suspicious that it will not be. The idea of the taliban protecting rights for women and girls and protecting the freedom of the media, well, they managed it yesterday, holding a fairly free and open Press Conference and taking questions about what will be reality be on the ground . Notjust in kabul but the other districts and cities and rural villages. And in the days and rural villages. And in the days and weeks to come, will actually be maintained in the discipline that they can enforce on their own fighters and their own commanders in different provinces of the country . Will it last . There is deep scepticism about the sort of assurances that were made yesterday but either through the loss of any support for the previous government or through the fact that the taliban looks like it will crack down on any signs of defiance, may be the people of afghanistan now are consigned to their fate, of afghanistan now are consigned to theirfate, those of afghanistan now are consigned to their fate, those who are left. There are still frantic efforts were people trying to get to the airport to find a way out and there has been a degree of chaos again today at the airport perimeter. There seems to be order in the airport itself and the runway is clear and fights have been leaving but there are Hundreds And Thousands of afghans at the fence trying to get flights and trying to get away and having to be held back by uk and us and other forces who are helping with the evacuation process, and the tricky thing is, any western nationals, foreign nationals, Refugees'>Afghan Refugees, they have got to get through the streets that the taliban now control in order to get out and there are signs that they are stopping people and asking for documents and that not everyone is able to get through especially those Refugees'>Afghan Refugees because they are caliban checkpoints in place. Because they are caliban checkpoints in lace. ,. ,. , now to some other news. Prices rose by less than expected in the year tojuly as the economy continued to re open as coronavirus restrictions were lifted. The dip in inflation was driven by price drops for clothing and footwear. 0ur Consumer Affairs Correspondent Coletta Smith reports. In the last few weeks, there is one thing that has been stretching budgets across the country. Fuel prices have been rocketing. In fact, thejuly Fuel Price was the highest seen in eight years. There have been some pretty good Summer Sales when it comes to clothing and shoes, and that has been Keeping Prices overall a bit lower, but the thing that has still been pushing inflation up are those Eye Watering Petrol and diesel prices. And with more long Road Trips for holidays in the uk this summer, people are really feeling the cost of a full tank. When you fill a car up like that, it costs about £70. | he travels about 25 miles there, | 25 miles back every day for work, so it is a big expense for diesel. It is pretty expensive again, 130 odd. But it is not all bad news for those splashing out over the holiday season. Summer clothing sales are back after the disruption of last year. Ijust assumed it was because a lot of the seasons clothes werent selling because a lot of people werent going to be on holiday, so everything has been slashed. This Months Inflation Figure is normally used to set the Price Rise for Rail Season tickets, but not this year. The government says they havent yet decided when or if they will be putting prices up. Thats music to the ears of transport campaigners. It would be really good news if, injanuary, We Hearthere is no increase as the Situation really is going to be terrible if they were to increase it. I cant imagine that they would because we are coming back from a pandemic and we need to get people back on board and get people in towns and cities spending. Although prices havent increased as quickly this summer as lots of experts expected, we do know that prices will be going up in the autumn and that is because we have already heard that Energy Prices are going up at The End of september. Given that expected squeeze, the chancellor is under pressure to scrap the Triple Lock and not raise pensions by so much. With more Price Rises on the road ahead, its time to buckle up. Colletta smith, Bbc News, nearwakefield. A Church Service has been held in plymouth to remember the five people killed in last weeks shooting the worst Mass Shooting in the uk for a decade. The service was led by the anglican bishop of plymouth and included contributions from the Community And City leaders. Sarah ransome reports. Under grey clouds people remembered one of the darkest days in plymouth. They came to remember the victims of the shooting in keyham last week. 0fficials, representatives of Emergency Services and residents came to pause and reflect. We feel a deep sense of sadness and sorrow. We stand alongside those who are bereaved and injured and distressed. We weep with those who weep. We cry as the writer of that song does, out of the depths of despair. At the heart of the service is a poignant act of remembrance, five candles lit for the five people killed byjake davison, who then turned the gun on himself. So we hold a minute of silence to remembeR Before god maxine davison, sophie martyn, lee martyn, stephen washington, kate sheppard. Stores across england, scotland and wales have been affected. Some of its staff are being loaned to suppliers to try to get things moving in the Supply Chain. Branches in Northern Ireland and the Republic Of Ireland are not impacted. Our Business Correspondent, Emma Simpson, has more details. Well, this is a popular chain, famous for its piripiri chicken. And if you cant serve it, thats a very big problem. Nandos has been running out of stock, hit by problems in its Supply Chain. And thats meant that dozens of branches have had to temporarily Close, like this one. You can probably see the sign just in the doorway there. Now, nandos says it is down to staff shortages, but it wont elaborate on that. But, jane, we already know that the food Supply Chain has been under immense strain in recent months. Youve got the hgv driver shortage, the pingdemic. Now that has ebbed a bit, but, of course, there are still pressures and then that masks some underlying problems with staffing. A shortage in general due to Brexit And Covid and that is causing disruption. Just a few days ago, we had Kentucky Fried Chicken talking about food shortages, and now it is nandos and as you said, it has lent some of its staff to key suppliers to try to get things moving again. And it is hoping to get things back to normal by saturday. Now its time for a look at the weather with louise. Good afternoon. Quiet but dull sums up the Weather Story today, probably not what you want to heaR But we have seen quite a lot of cloud around, and the best of the breaks to the east of scotland, running down through the east of the pennines and to the north of london but the cloud out to the west thick enough for a spot of drizzle and temperatures here mid to high teens. At the very best, we could see 22c where we keep the sunshine. It stays mild through the night but that cloud continues and it will turn quite misty and damp along west facing coasts once again. Another grey start to tomorrow morning. As i say, a mild start, and we could have a window of finer weather once again, especially through Northern Ireland, stretching across wales and into the midlands as we go through the day. It wont last very long. Eventually, more cloud with showery outbreaks of rain moving in from the west from another weather front. Temperatures disappointing again for this time of year, ranging from 13 21c. Hello. The headlines. Angry exchanges in the House Of Commons over afghanistan. Ministers are accused of serious failings. Borisjohnson says the uk will honour its commitment to the afghan people. No matter how grim the lessons of the past, the future is not yet written. Back to you. You are watching Bbc News. Mps have been debating the talibans return to power in afghanistan. The Prime Minister opened the debate by saying that the conflict in afghanistan, over the past two decades, was seared into our national consciousness and that the collapse of government forces had taken everyone by surprise. But he denied thered been a failure in the uks Emergency Planning and said that the uk would honour its enduring commitment to the afghan people. We will be supporting, doing everything we can to support helped the Uk Mission in afghanistan and investing everything we can to support the wider area around afghanistan and to do everything we can to avert a humanitarian crisis. The west could not continue this us led mission, a Mission Conceived and executed in Support And Defence of america without american logistics, without us airpower and without american might. I really think it is an illusion to believe that there is appetite amongst any of our partners for a continued military Presence Orfrom Military solution imposed by nato in afghanistan, Mr Speaker, that idea ended with the Combat Mission in 2014. And i do not believe that today, i do not believe that deploying Tens Of Thousands of british troops to fight the taliban is an option. No matter how sincerely people may advocated and i appreciate their sincerity but i do not believe that is an option that would commend itself either to the british people or, Mr Speaker, to this house. Mr speaker, we must deal with the position as it is, accepting what we have achieved and what we have not achieved. We are clear and we have agreed that it would be a mistake for any country to recognise any new regime in kabul prematurely oR Bilaterally. Instead those countries that care about Afghanistans Future should work towards common conditions about the conduct of the new regime Before deciding together whether to recognise it and on what terms. We willjudge this regime based on the choices it makes and by its actions rather than by its words. That was Boris Johnson and that was borisjohnson and his speech, his Opening Speech to the House Of Commons this morning. The Labour Leader Sir Keir Starmer said it was unconscionable that not everyone who helped the British Forces will come back. The prime Ministers Judgment on afghanistan has been appalling. Mr speaker, Mr Speaker, nobody believes that britain and our allies could have remained in afghanistan indefinitely. Or that britain could have fought alone. Nato leaders were put in a difficult position after President Trump agreed with the taliban that all us forces would withdraw by may 2021. But Mr Speaker, that agreement was made in february 2020. 18 months ago. Weve had 18 months to prepare and plan for the consequences of what followed. To plan and to prepare for the resettlement of Refugees, of those that have supported us, for supporting the afghan government in managing withdraw, for securing international and regional pressure on the Taliban And Support for the afghan government. The very problems we are confronting today in this debate, were all the problems of the last 18 months and there has been a failure of preparation. That was sick kier starmer. Conservative Mp Caroline noakes spoke of the dangers female Refugees'>Afghan Refugees and their children could face if subjected to taliban rule. At that Dispatch Box i argued for Refugee Family Reunion to allow Teenage Girls who were over 18 to be allowed to come here. Our children do not suddenly become independent because they passed a day over their 18th birthday. So actually Refugee Family Reunion in this instance has to make sure that those girls are able to come here because would we leave our daughters in afghanistan . 12 year old girls taken from their homes . I will not use the term forced into marriage. They are abductive and raped by men who are old enough to be their grandfathers. We have to do more. We have to do it quickly. We have to do more. We have encourage people to stand up for democracy, to stand up for womens rights. We funded and set up ngos. All those people are now in Grave Danger and the government needs to come together and evacuate those people as soon as possible. So it is great to hear some of the members in parliament stand up for this, but what we need is a coherent british Government Response to get those people out now. We have known there has been this deadline of the 31st Of August for the troops, the us troops to leave and so the right thing to do right now is to evacuate people by military planes and to put pressure on the us to do the same. Now is the time to show that this government means what it says. We need to come forward, bring people in and accept larger numbers of Rep Receipt large numbers of Rep Receipt large numbers of Rep Receipt large numbers of Refugees. China has done a lot in afghanistan and they would like to do everything possible to ensure that their investment is safe. If you see the bulk of entries of China And Russia and iran, they have an economic interest there, so definitely they would like things to go smoothly. And they have also stated that. What the lady was saying, i tend to agree with. Yesterday four people were hanged because they did not submit to the new government. Many cases are being reported of killing going on human i would like to bring the humanitarian issue to your notice. According to my information. Thousands of foreigners are around the kabul airport. I would like to advise the un and the international community that there should be pressure either on americans or on the taliban, those who have a valid visa, the family. Theyve dubbed it the silverdale stink, and they say its hanging over their homes. 0ne Family believes the fumes could be the cause of their sons ill Health And Today theyve taken the Environment Agency to the High Court. Phil mackie has more. This is whats causing the stink. Walleys quarry in silverdale in staffordshire is a Landfill Site which thousands of people say is ruining their lives. Efforts have begun to cap parts of the site to reduce the Hydrogen Sulphide that is being emitted, which locals say hasnt made much difference. The legal case is to focus on whats happened to five year old matthew richards. He was born prematurely and has underlying health conditions. But a medical expert has said that his problems have been made worse. The first three years of his life, we were just at hospital continuously with chest problems, bronchitis, consistent cough. Do you think now, looking back, that was to do with Walleys Quarry . Yes, because i literally lived. Id open my curtains in the morning and i could see it. Becky is in court for the two Day Hearing along with the small number of supporters who were allowed inside, including heR Brother. Its been awful. The levels of Hydrogen Sulphide coming from the landfill have been regularly breaching World Health Organization levels for odour. But theyve also breached the World Health Organization levels for health impacts. So that is why we are here. Thousands of people have complained of breathing difficulties, sore throats, sore eyes and sleeplessness. The last time i was here, the smell was unbearable. Today it is not so bad and that is probably because it is a bit breezy and it has blown it away. The Environment Agency sent me a statement in which it says it doesnt want the community to suffer and that the work that is going on at the site to make things better is making a difference. But if you speak to the people who live around here, they just want the site Closed. Stop the stink hundreds of people have taken part in a series of protests this year and many are following the Hearing Today hoping it will give them some respite. We havent noticed any improvement at all. When you wake at 2 or 3 oclock in the morning, you literally are gasping foR Breath, it is that bad. Your eyes are watering and your nose is tingling. And the smell alone is absolutely disgusting. There was a breakthrough last week when the local council issued a Nuisance Abatement Notice on the operators. For the thousands of people who live nearby, and foR Becky, a lot is riding on thejudicial review. If we lose, im going to be forced out of my home because there is no way i can keep matthew around here. And with matthews other conditions, ive got a good Support Bubble Round me. So then its going to be me who is going to be suffering, mentally. Im angry. Im fed up. You know, this is about a five year old child and a community of children being poisoned. I really am angry. No matter how grim the lessons of the past, the future is not yet written, and at this bleak Turning Point we must help the people afghanistan to choose the best of all their possible futures. Theres been a major miscalculation of the resilience of the Afghan Forces and staggering complacency from our government about the taliban threat. 0ur Political Correspondent, Chris Mason, was watching the debate. As Mps Return here, so too do those who want to be heard by them. A demonstration demanding those afghans who worked for the uk in afghanistan can now move to live here. Order across the road and in the chamber, the commons as weve not seen it since Before the pandemic. The government says its proud to welcome afghans here, but the Prime Minister added. The bulk of the effort of this country will be directed, and should be directed, Mr Speaker, to supporting people in afghanistan and in the region, Mr Speaker, in order to prevent a worse humanitarian crisis. 457 british servicemen and women were killed in afghanistan. Those who served alongside them brought the chamber to silence today. Like many veterans, this last week has been one that has seen me struggle through anger and grief, and rage. The feeling of abandonment, of not just a country, but the sacrifice that my friends made. Ive been to funerals from poole to dunblane. 0ur Political Correspondent Jonathan Blake is at westminster. You have been following the debate. Quite a few salvos fired towards Mr Johnson but especially from the former prime Minister Theresa may. She described it as a failure of a Foreign Policy and that was some of the uncompromising criticism that came the way of borisjohnson in a House Of Commons that we have not seen since Before the pandemic, mps recalled from their Summer Break and packed into the green benches with no social distancing, but it was a recall in the most serious of circumstances. The Prime Minister defended the actions of the government and he said the central aim of what the uk and the us were trying to do in afghanistan had been successful and he acknowledged, though, the rise of the taliban, that it had been quicker than anybody had expected, but he said that there would be a Safe Haven in the uk for several thousand afghans who will come here as Refugees. He also said the future is as yet unwritten and he was criticised by the leader of the Labour Party Keir Starmerfor the leader of the Labour Party Keir Starmer for complacency, the leader of the Labour Party Keir Starmerfor complacency, repeatedly, and foR Being on holiday when kabul was falling to the taliban but most striking, today, the interventions by many Conservative Mps who have really lamented what has happened in afghanistan. Spending the last hour orso afghanistan. Spending the last hour or so in the House Of Commons chamber, it is still relatively full with mps trying to catch the eye of the Deputy Speaker to have their three minutes to say their piece and to grapple with the big questions that are hanging over what has happened in afghanistan. Was the effort of the british armed Forces Day in vain . What happens now and what many now perceived to be a failure of the British Government in not foreseeing the swift rise to power of the taliban in the wake of british and us troops withdrawing, what does that mean foR British Policy In General . Those questions will not amount to a huge Amount Today because apart from this collective catharsis from mps, and a chance for them to grill ministers and scrutinise the work of the government, there is no vote and there will be no conclusion to this debate beyond the Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab wrapping things up for the government in the run up to five oclock when we expect proceedings to come to a Close. That oclock when we expect proceedings to come to a Close. To come to a Close. At The End of all of this. To come to a Close. At The End of all of this. I to come to a Close. Yes, the uk has thej current presidency of the g7 and that has been something the Prime Minister has said he would try to do, to coordinate or attempt to coordinate a international response to what has happened in afghanistan, but in terms of what that will amount to, it will depend upon the political will of those nations on the g7 to attempt to do something to bring pressure to bear on the taliban to make sure that the gains which we have heard discussed and debated that have been achieved in afghanistan over the last 20 years, that they do not come to nothing, and as far as military Involvement Or Reintroduction of Military Presence in afghanistan by the us or the uk, that is not on the cards. We have been told that by the government here and also by president biden, so we will see what the g7 can do in the face of the rise to power of the taliban. Jonathan blake, Thanks Forjoining us. In the afghan capital kabul, british and international troops are continuing to organise evacuations from the citys airport. The aim is to bring 1,000 people a day to the uk. The Ministry Of Defence says it expects half a dozen flights to the uk in the next 24 hours. Yesterday we got about 700 people out and were trying to speed up the pace over the next few days. Well put everything we can on these to try to get everyone we need to get to safety as soon as we can. But this is still a country on edge. Injalalabad, which fell to the taliban at the weekend, a gesture of defiance. The old afghan flag held aloft. Gunshots. Clearly something the taliban will not tolerate. Afghanistans new masters have little time to celebrate. Those whove managed the Countrys Economy in recent years conscious of the enormous challenges ahead. Unfortunately, the economic Situation is going to decline. Its almost a certainty that Donor Aid will decline, it is almost a certainty that assets will be frozen and that will lead to deterioration in the macroeconomic environment. Afghanistan is at a crossroads, so much about the future uncertain. How the taliban will rule, how its new subjects and how the world will respond. Paul adams, Bbc News. Other news now prices rose by less than expected in the year tojuly, as the economy continued to re open, as coronavirus restrictions were lifted. The dip in inflation was driven by price drops for clothing and footwear. 0ur Consumer Affairs Correspondent, Coletta Smith, reports. When you fill a car up like that, it costs about £70. | he travels about 25 miles there, | 25 miles back every day for work, so its a big expense for diesel. It is pretty expensive again, 130 odd, locally. Some of its staff are being loaned to suppliers to try to get things moving in the Supply Chain. Branches in Northern Ireland and the Republic Of Ireland are not impacted. Our Business Correspondent Emma Simpson has more details. Lets return to our top story mps debating the Situation in afghanistan as the taliban return to power there. One of those speaking in the House Of Commons was Labour Mp Hilary Benn he called for more clarity on the logistical challenge Refugees could face when leaving afghanistan. There has been a large measure of agreement on the tasks that face us immediately, to get people out, and i would say to ministers, can you brief members of parliament on how the system is working, what we can do when considering is contact us to make sure they are passed on information and can you reassure us that no bureaucracy is getting in the way . The point the honourable gentleman made is that paperwork is all very good but how do you get the paperwork when you are hiding in a basement because the taliban are patrolling the streets . Lets cross to westminster and speak to the former shadow Foreign Secretary Hilary Benn. Thanks Forjoining Us. Did you get an answer to your question . Irlat Thanks Forjoining us. Did you get an answer to your question . Not yet. But i know an answer to your question . Not yet. But i know that an answer to your question . Not yet. But i know that parliamentary but i know that parliamentary colleagues on all sides of the house have had a lot of people contacting them, worried about relatives who are in the country, people are at the airport, what are they meant to be doing . I think it would enable us as mps to help the government and the ambassador out there and the brigadier in charge of the operation, help us to help them if we can give good accurate up to Date Advice about what people should be doing, and be confident that when we pass on details about those who are in fear for their lives and want to get out, what it is that they should do to make contact with those organising the evacuation from the airport. The people of afghanistan were given no choice and the number of people who are fearful and wanting to leave tells you that there is a lack of confidence in what the taliban spokesperson said yesterday about how they are going to treat people because people in afghanistan have a very long memory and they know what happened last time. A lot of british Service Personnel have lost their lives and we have worked very hard and it seems to me inconceivable after this withdrawal and retreat, because that is what it is, that we dont sit down and try to learn lessons. Im not interested in and finding a but im interested in understanding what happened. Finding a scapegoat. No doubt that the announcement of the final stage of The American withdrawal sapped the Confidence And Hope on the part of Afghan Forces and that is why the taliban were then able to seize the moment and to take city after city and finally arrived in kabul. That moment and to take city after city and finally arrived in kabul. At the time of events and finally arrived in kabul. At the time of events taking and finally arrived in kabul. The reason why so many countries supported the Regional Partners . The reason why so many countries supported the move i many countries supported the move into afghanistan in 2001 was after the horrific 9 11 attacks and the taliban then had given space to alqaeda and they planned the attacks in afghanistan from there, and there is No Doubt the action we took in 2001 which not everybody supported but i did, in the House Of Commons did overwhelmingly, did prevent in the subsequent 20 years from afghanistan being used as a base from which to attack us. It remains to be seen what this new Government Run by the taliban is going to do and you will have heard many times in the debate today, colleagues saying, we mustjudge them not by their words but by their deeds, and what we must do with the international community is to talk to each other about how we are going to each other about how we are going to deal with the taliban, to make it clear to them that we will hold them to account. It is a country which is heavily dependent on aid and that is a difficult balance because you dont want to penalise people because of the failings of their government. We must support those in the country and the best way we can, as they fight to uphold their rights, and there will be a lot of Refugees and we must provide Help And Support because the main Burden And Support because the main Burden And Responsibility of that will fall on neighbouring countries because not all the referees will come Refugees will come to countries like britain and the united states, they will go to the immediate neighbouring countries which is what happened the last time the taliban were in power and remember, when they fell after 2001, millions of people went back to afghanistan which was a vote of confidence in the new country, that the allied intervention made possible. What did the Nato Forces and the allied forces get so wrong with the country for it to collapse so quickly . With the country for it to collapse so tuickl . ,. , so quickly . The assessment that even with the announcement so quickly . The assessment that even with the announcement of so quickly . The assessment that even with the announcement of the with the announcement of The American withdrawal and i think the speed with which they did that was a mistake and i said that in my speech, and it was the right thing to do and we have been doing this for a number of years because our active Combat Role in afghanistan as the uk ended in 2014 and since then we have been training and giving support to the afghan police and the army, so they can defend their own country. But they were Reliant On Support Including support from the airfrom The Americans support including support from the air from The Americans because support including support from the airfrom The Americans because if you are engaged in fighting knowing that you can call up Air Cover if you are under attack its really important to your sense of confidence and your morale and the moment it was clear that that would no longeR Be available, the army in effect gave way and the taliban advanced. We will need to have the opportunity to reflect on these lessons and we can make immediate judgments but we need to hearfrom all of those involved. That is for another day. Fortoday, all of those involved. That is for another day. For today, the immediate priority are get people out, have in place a Refugee Scheme and provide support to other nations in the region that will be receiving a lot of Refugees. No doubt influence, what have we lost . Ihv doubt this is a retreat for the allied coalition. No doubt about that whatsoever. 0ther allied coalition. No doubt about that whatsoever. Other countries around the world, some of those you mentioned, they will maybe form a conclusion that when push comes to shove then we withdraw rather than see things through. We could not have done that on a permanent basis and the only way you could achieve thatis and the only way you could achieve that is by building the capacity of the afghan state which is what we have been trying to do but that did not work and their wasnt a huge amount of confidence in the government and there was corruption, but then there is not confidence in the taliban either. Therefore it is the taliban either. Therefore it is the people of afghanistan who be able to determine their own future but this is a bad day for the international coalition, for the uk and for the us. Hello. This is Bbc News with lukwesa burak. The headlines. Angry exchanges in the House Of Commons over afghanistan. The Prime Minister says the uk will honour its commitment to the afghan people, as senior taliban leaders arrive hoping to form a government. Speaking to reporters in kabul earlier, the Uk Ambassador to afghanistan Sir Laurie Bristow says its taken a few days to get the evacuation going. Clearly it has been very, very difficult circumstances here over the last couple of days. Yesterday we think we got about 700 people out on the military flights. That would be a massive relief to the millions of afghans who were waiting anxiously to hear what had happened to him people because people were worried about what happened to him. They knew that there was a feeling that he would not have abandoned them in the way he did, so they knew there was more to the story and i think we will find out in the next few days maybe even hours. What i have been hearing in afghanistan now that people have had a chance to digest the news is anger at the west and lots of questions. Questions about how could the taliban do this . Are you really telling me that the western intelligence agencies did not know it could not predict this . Anger at the west in particular the uk and Canada And Other Countries for the fact that they are enabled to make unilateral decisions and to stand for whats right and they are blindly following the us and whatever the us says. Theyjust follow them and do it. The afghans are saying that should these other countries stood for their values then we would not have been in the Situation that we are. It is hard to imagine a future with the type of taliban like the one network that we have now. They were responsible for some of the most atrocious crimes against afghans as well as international forces. The how connie network is known or was known the most technically advanced attacks against foreign troops. And as well as afghans. So they were the ones who would go and infiltrate underground systems and go to a university and kill students. 0r Underground systems and go to a university and kill students. Or go to a building that was highly secure in the middle of a green zone and they could manage to get in and kill innocent people. And it is very hard for afghans to know. The taliban of the 90s were at least different. These guys were actively involved and they killed many brothers, sisters mothers etc. And they killed many brothers, sisters mothers etc. When the story first started sisters mothers etc. When the story first started to sisters mothers etc. When the story first started to develop, sisters mothers etc. When the story first started to develop, they sisters mothers etc. When the story first started to develop, they were i first started to develop, they were fears about where we were heading towards, a civil war. That fear is still there because a big section. Is still there because a big section of the afghan society do not see themselves represented in the taliban period. The resistance will probably come from the north. If opposition figures can get wept in if opposition figures can get weapons from their neighbours and mobilise, they will probably have a base there. It will start from there because that is one of the last places that the taliban has not yet conquered. That is where the acts afghan Vice President is based. Ihc. Afghan Vice President is based. Inc. You very much for many british army veterans and their loved ones, the talibans swift takeover in afghanistan has left them wondering whether the sacrifices made during the afghan war were worth it. 0ur Reporter Matt graveling has been speaking to soldiers whose lives were changed forever in afghanistan and to the families of those who did not make it home. Ben had got to ten days Before he was due to come home. We thought he had got through it. The following day, six oclock in the evening, a knock on the door. A man in uniform. We knew we knew in that split second that life had changed. In 2006, ben Parkinsons Army Land rover detonated a mine in afghanistan. He had two collapsed lungs, he lost his spleen, massive chest injuries. Of course, the big ones the massive head injury. The Liaison Officer spoke to andy and actually told him that ben was not going to make it home. Ben is one of the most severely injured british soldiers to survive the war. Ben, he knows how many are now suffering with ptsd and lifelong injuries. He knows how many we have lost. And it is very hard to see that there was any point. While Bens Family continue to help him recover, other loved ones were not so fortunate. My husband had said to him, you do realise the risks, dont you . And he said, dad, we know the risks, but we just dont think about it, i because if you think too much about it, he said, | nobody would ever go. Richard was flown home afteR Being fatally wounded in an explosion while on a Vehicle Patrol in Helmand Province in 2009. They told me there was no hope. They said, just be with him for as long as you can be. I so i went to his bedside. The padre said to me, i you have got to let him go. He said, you have to. Tell him it is ok to go. So thats what happened to him. The hardest thing i have ever done in my life. I i am incredibly sad. Quite bitter. And incredibly angry about it, i because everything that the lads and girls out there have worked i so hard for has just crumbled away. Jack cummings served two tours of afghanistan. In 2010, he lost his legs in an explosion. We signed up on the dotted line. We knew the risks. I was very proud to serve my country. But looking atjust the way afghanistan collapsed, you have just got to question it. Was it worth it . I dont think it was. Me personally. I honestly dont think it was. I really hope my opinion changes but, at this present time, just seeing what is happening in afghan. You know, you see the footage on the airfields. These poor afghans trying to flee their country. I am sure, with recent events, what is unfolding in afghanistan, it might set off a few people. All i can say is, if you are struggling, please, speak to your family and friends. Get round each other. Lets not struggle in silence. On sunday, as the taliban continued to reclaim afghanistan, hazel visited her son on the 12th anniversary of his death. I put the flowers on his grave and i sat and talked to him. I i tell him what has been going on. I said, all your sacrifices have| just been in vain, sweetheart. And i am so sorry. They have been dubbed up with a terrible sting. And they believe that the fumes could be the cause of the ill health of their son. And theyve taken the Environment Agency to the High Court. Initially it was thought that he had a heart attack, but he was just dehydrated because he has not be eating or drinking for the last 12 days. The fluid in his body basically dried out and he needed some trips. Around when i am in the morning, he was brought back to the Hunger Strike. Morale is high, they are getting very weak. It was understood that it was imperfect at the time understood that it was imperfect at the time. Ten years later, really, there the time. Ten years later, really, there have the time. Pensions is notjust about a bit of point. Pensions is notjust about a bit of money. This sits within a Background History of decades and much Background History of decades and much longer where there has been de facto discrimination of the paid living facto discrimination of the paid living quarters, annual leave and leave living quarters, annual leave and leave to living quarters, annual leave and leave to be living quarters, annual leave and leave to be with family. There is a whole leave to be with family. There is a whole package of things. Very generously the veterans just wanting to say generously the veterans just wanting to say we generously the veterans just wanting to say we want to make a start with resolving to say we want to make a start with resolving from the 1997, pre 1997 community resolving from the 1997, pre 1997 community members and their families to try and community members and their families to try and put things right. Oh, it would make a huge difference to make to your life . Oh, it would make a huge difference to our make to your life . Oh, it would make a huge difference to our live. A huge difference to our live. Let me put it this way, because in 2009 the government agreed to give settlement rights to the gurkhas in the uk. That was a job i think was half done. The settlement rights were given, but the pensions are still paid based on the cost of living in nepal. So all the veterans will have resettled to the uk, they are on rental credits and benefits. It is not a very dignified life. They have a lot of social problems here, language problem, medical issues. There are so many things that need to be addressed. So the way that this would make a difference is that many of these gurkhas very happily go and live backin gurkhas very happily go and live back in nepal where they actually, you know would be very happy with the community. Rather than living in the community. Rather than living in the uk where it is very, very awkward, they feel very out of place. That is one of the main differences it would make. Thank you ve much differences it would make. Thank you very much both differences it would make. Thank you very much both of differences it would make. Thank you very much both of you. Here is louise. Quiet but dull subs up the Weather Story for today. The best are really in the east of scotlands. The cloud out to the west thick enough for a spot or two for drizzle here. Temperatures mid to high teens at the very best. We could see 22 celsius where we will keep the sunshine. It will stay mild overnight. The cloud continues and it will turn quite misty and damp along West Coast once again. It is going to be another grey start to tomorrow morning. As i say a mild start and we could have a window of fine weather once again, particularly through Northern Ireland stretching across wales and into the midlands as we go through the day. It will not last very long. Eventually we will see more cloud, some showery outbreaks of rain moving in from the west from another weather front. Temperatures disappointing again for this time of year, ranging from 13 21 c. This is Bbc News. The headlines angry exchanges in the House Of Commons over afghanistan. Ministers are accused of serious failings. Borisjohnson says the uk will honor its commitment to the afghan people. No matter how grim the lessons of the past, the future is not yet written, and at this bleak Turning Point we must help the people of afghanistan to choose the best of all their possible futures. Theres been a major miscalculation of the resilience of the Afghan Forces and staggering complacency from our government about the taliban threat. In afghanistan, as senior taliban leaders arrive, Britains Ambassador says his team are working flat out to help just ordinary, desperate people get out of a really difficult Situation. It is my choice to stay here, all of my staff here are volunteers and ive paid tribute to them for that. We are working Closely with our military colleagues and others across government to get through the workload and to get the people we need to get out of here to safety. After two years of cancelled exams, the Scottish Government confirms theyll go ahead as normal in 2022. Nandos says its been forced to Close stores after running out of chicken blaming supply issues. The stench from a Staffordshire Landfill Site one localfamily is at the High Court to argue the fumes could be causing health problems. 0ur Political Correspondent, Chris Mason, was watching the debate. As Mps Return here, so, too, do those who want to be heard by them. A demonstration demanding those afghans who worked for the uk in afghanistan can now move to live here. Order across the road and in the chamber, the commons as weve not seen it since Before the pandemic. The government says its proud to welcome afghans here, but the Prime Minister added. The bulk of the effort of this country will be directed, and should be directed, Mr Speaker, to supporting people in afghanistan and in the region, Mr Speaker, in order to prevent a worse humanitarian crisis. Within moments of getting to his feet today, Boris Johnson faced persistent, probing scrutiny, from the Opposition Benches and from his own side, too. There was, for many, one Overarching Question how was this allowed to happen . We boast about Global Britain, but where is Global Britain i On The Streets Of Kabul . It comes as the talibans top political leaders returned to afghanistan from qatar where many were in exile. 0ur diplomatic correspondent, pauladams, reports. Translation i urge the taliban to let the youth and women continue their studies so that we will advance. The Ministry Of Defence says it expects half a dozen flights to the uk in the next 2li hours. Meanwhile, the government of the United Arab Emirates says the afghan president Ashraf Ghani who fled the taliban advance at the weekend is in the gulf state. The foreign Affairs Ministry said he and his family had been welcomed on humanitarian grounds. Now the latest coronavirus figures. Other news now prices rose by less than expected in the year tojuly, as the economy continued to re open, as coronavirus restrictions were lifted. The dip in inflation was driven by price drops for clothing and footwear. 0ur Consumer Affairs Correspondent, Coletta Smith, reports. When you fill a car up like that, it costs about £70. | he travels about 25 miles there, | 25 miles back every day for work, so its a big expense for diesel. It is pretty expensive again, 130 odd, locally. We have had formal exams cancelled now for two years in a row, and if we go back to 2020, that was fairly last minute, the cancellation, the Teachers Judgment meant they had to go to a different system which meant some pupils had to be downgraded through no fault of their own, last year we had continuous assessments where exams were cancelled halfway through the air which had some people branding the assessments as exams by another name. So to have is to aim for next day, thats the plan, to have normal exams, we are back to school already in scotland, so people can get down to Work And Hope for the best, that that will be the Situation we are in next spring. They have already set out notjust one but two back up plans, so the first, continue to number one, if there is disruption to learning in the coming term and the term after christmas, as there was last year, potentially with isolations and other lockdowns, although hopefully not, but if exams can go ahead next spring, and that is the case, modifications will be made to what is assessed in those exams and we are just hearing they might even be given some prior knowledge of the topics that will be coming up in the exams if that is the case. That is continuously number one, and Contingency Number two, the Situation-everybody'>Situation Everybody hopes we will not be in next spring, if the public Health Advice is that they cannot hold exams, and then we will go back to the scenario where we use teacherjudgment and crucially that would be based on assessments and on work that has already happened within the school year. Pupils are starting back at school this week in scotland are going to think about the worst Case Scenario already and everything they are doing from this week on could result in their grade. A Church Service has been held in plymouth to remember the five people killed in last weeks shooting the worst Mass Shooting in the uk for a decade. The service was led by the anglican bishop of plymouth and included contributions from the Community And City leaders. Sarah ransome reports. Bells ring under grey clouds, people remembered one of the darkest days in plymouth. They came to remember the victims of the shootings in keyham last week. A special Church Service for all people and all faiths. Officials, representatives of Emergency Services and residents came to pause and reflect. We feel a deep sense of sadness and sorrow. We stand alongside those who are bereaved and injured and distressed. We weep with those who weep. We cry, as the writer of that song does, out of the depths of despair. At the heart of the service is a poignant act of remembrance, five candles lit for the five people killed byjake davison, who then turned the gun on himself. So we hold a minutes silence to remembeR Before god maxine davison, sophie martyn, lee martyn, stephen washington, kate sheppard. Currently held without bail, he denies the charges, some of which date back as far as two decades. Samira hussein is outside the courthouse in new york. Im outside the courthouse where the opening statements from the prosecution have just ended and they have outlined their case, that involves six women and four minors and the prosecution says this is a man who used his vast network to groom girls, boys and young women, for his own sexual gratification. Its a phenomenal fall from for his own sexual gratification. Its a phenomenalfall from grace for a Music Star who dominated the 19905. R kelly is one of the most successful artists of all time. Sometimes called the king of R B, kelly has been credited with redefining R B music. But for the last two years, the embattled musician has been behind bars. R kelly and members of his entourage are accused of recruiting women and girls to engage in illegal sexual activity with the R B singer. He is also accused of paying victims and witnesses to cover up his alleged crimes. In a now infamous interview with an american network, kelly fervently denied any wrongdoing. I didnt do this stuff this is not me im fighting for my bleep life youre killing me with this bleep. Indistinct shouting. Robert. 30 years of my career youre trying to kill me allegations of sexual abuse are not new for mR Kelly. He has been facing them for more than two decades. But the only time he faced criminal charges, back in 2008, he was acquitted. These new allegations against kelly are far more serious. If found guilty, he could spend the next several decades in prison. It is significant to know how many things have changed since 2008 until now and the biggest one is the kind of Culture Change that we have seen in america as a result of the Metoo Movement and that is why you see a sense from prosecutors that this time they could be successful. Thanks Forjoining Us. We can return to our top story and mps are accusing the government of serious failings in afghanistan and the prime ministeR Borisjohnson said the uk will honour its enduring commitment to afghan people but the Labour Leader Keir Starmer accused the Prime Minister of staggering complacency and betraying the afghan people. We can now talk to the british ambassador to afghanistan from 2010 until 2012, and im glad to say we can speak to him now. Thanks Forjoining Us. I would like to get your reaction to what is taking place now in afghanistan and On The Streets Of Kabul. It is taking place now in afghanistan and On The Streets Of Kabul. On the streets of kabul. It is sad and shameful On The Streets Of Kabul. It is sad and shameful and On The Streets Of Kabul. It is sad and shameful and frightening. I On The Streets Of Kabul. It is sad i and shameful and frightening. We On The Streets Of Kabul. It is sad and shameful and frightening. We saw the collapse of the afghan government and the afghan security forces and we are seeing the taliban re establishing its authority over the country. We know from history what that means for afghan women and people more generally so it is a sad day foR Britain and the united states and the west and it is even saddeR Because it was not inevitable. SaddeR Because it was not inevitable. We l saddeR Because it was not i inevitable. We did saddeR Because it was not inevitable. We did not saddeR Because it was not inevitable. We did not need inevitable. Why not . We did not need to leave afghanistan inevitable. Why not . We did not need to leave afghanistan in inevitable. Why not . We did not need to leave afghanistan in the inevitable. Why not . We did not need to leave afghanistan in the way inevitable. Why not . We did not need to leave afghanistan in the way we i to leave afghanistan in the way we have and i have some sympathy with the british and french and germans and other nato powers because once The Americans had taken the decision to withdraw its troops without much consultation, i should say, with the rest of their nato allies, there really was not many options for staying in afghanistan, so we are at the mercy of us retreat. Horse staying in afghanistan, so we are at the mercy of us retreat. The mercy of us retreat. How could we have left the mercy of us retreat. How could we have left and the mercy of us retreat. How could we have left and when the mercy of us retreat. How could we have left and when should the mercy of us retreat. How could we have left and when should we i the mercy of us retreat. How could i we have left and when should we have left, at what point . We we have left and when should we have left, at what point . Left, at what point . We were already transitioning left, at what point . We were already transitioning and left, at what point . We were already transitioning and when left, at what point . We were already transitioning and when i left, at what point . We were already transitioning and when i was left, at what point . We were already transitioning and when i was there i transitioning and when i was there in 2010, 2012, we had over 130,000 nato troops there and there had been a surge and we had a programme to build up the afghan security forces and over the next four years we drew those forces down to much smaller levels, transferred the responsibility for maintaining security to the Afghan Forces and recently we had drawn it down to about 8000 troops, 3500 americans, but i think we could have maintained that force for quite some time but with withdrawing it so quickly we undermined the confidence in the security forces and gave a boost to the Taliban And Afghanistan has a long history of people switching sides when they think the writing is on the wall. They concluded the taliban were going to win which made it much easierfor them taliban were going to win which made it much easier for them to do so. Were the Afghan Forces ready to operate on their own . Hat operate on their own . Not completely operate on their own . Not completely. They operate on their own . Mt completely. They were still dependent on us and Nato Air Power and there was a Logistics Aspect and training, so small but important elements to give them the confidence to continue but they were abandoned rather abruptly. We to continue but they were abandoned rather abruptly rather abruptly. We have heard criticism and rather abruptly. We have heard criticism and questions rather abruptly. We have heard criticism and questions of i rather abruptly. We have heard i criticism and questions of whetheR Basically nato was fit for purpose, what did you make of that . Mata basically nato was fit for purpose, what did you make of that . Nato has a roblem what did you make of that . Nato has a problem with what did you make of that . Nato has a problem with its what did you make of that . Nato has a problem with its reputation what did you make of that . Nato has a problem with its reputation at i what did you make of that . Nato has a problem with its reputation at the i a problem with its reputation at the moment and i think we certainly, it has a broader purpose, it is a much broader debate whether it is fit for purpose, but the legacy in afghanistan will not be as good as it could have been. They did spend 20 years building up the afghan security forces which have now turned out to be rather inadequate. Work foreign forces really that dependent on the us infrastructure within afghanistan . Were. Once the us pulled out it was game over . It was an integrated Nato Force led by The Americans and i think given the speed with which The Americans decided they were going to withdraw, it would have been a bit difficult to reconstitute a Nato Force without the central american Logistics Aspect, and so given it had been an integrated Nato Force led by The Americans over 20 years, if the leadership disappears and some of the core elements disappear, i dont think it would have been that easy for the rest of nato in the time available to have constituted a force to support the afghans. It would have taken the political Wheel Thatis would have taken the political wheel that is not evident. We are hearing about the opportunity that has been presented to the likes of China And Russia and iran. When we look at china, what is worth more to china the geopolitical advantage, is which we have now lost or Afghanistans Lithium . I is which we have now lost or Afghanistans Lithium . I think china has alwa s Afghanistans Lithium . I think china has always had Afghanistans Lithium . I think china has always had its Afghanistans Lithium . I think china has always had its eye Afghanistans Lithium . I think china has always had its eye on Afghanistans Lithium . I think china has always had its eye on the i Afghanistans Lithium . I think china i has always had its eye on the afghan minerals, notjust lithium, coal minerals, not just lithium, coal bold minerals, notjust lithium, coal bold as well. Afghanistan is awash with just about every mineral the modern world needs. China had already established a foothold through its corporate concessions. I think china will want to see a relatively stable afghanistan so that those minerals can be exploited. We certainly missed an opportunity here. China will have much greater access to those minerals then we will. And we may come to regret that someday. Ok. Come to regret that someday. 0k, sir william patey. Thank you very much for your time. We are just going to take our viewers to the debate that is taking place at the moment in the House Of Commons. And here we go. We moment in the House Of Commons. And here we go here we go. We have been told they cannot aet here we go. We have been told they cannot get through here we go. We have been told they cannot get through the here we go. We have been told they cannot get through the taliban cannot get through the taliban roadblocks to the airport and they will be abandoned. Prime minister, this has so much significance to those young afghans. They represent a generation of promising leaders who are watching the future that they work for and hope for unravel in front of their eyes. People, especially women have burned documents that link them to the uk for their own safety. And so they are being turned away at airport perimeters. There was a british national who has been sheltering in a park in kabul with her young children in recent days because her house was burned down and local people are too scared to offer them shelter. Their mp has promised a Phone Call from the Foreign Secretarys private office and that has not happened. What use are promises that are never ever kept . The Prime Minister made promises this morning that he knows practically that the government cannot fulfil. The Foreign Secretary has to address this today. So many members have said, one of the consequences of the chaos that ministers have allowed to engulf us is that people will not trust us again. What can he tell them today that will start to put that right . He will have heard one of our colleagues. How have we become this country that drags its feet on saving the lives of those who supported us, who stand by while the Refugee Crisis unfold . The Prime Minister said Last Night it would take we would take 20,000 Refugees, how can anyone believe him . He has made these promises Before. He promised he would protect a scheme to give sanction to child Refugees and he Closed it. The government has given us a press release, what we need is a plan. What is the scale of the Refugee Crisis that the government anticipates . What efforts have they made to co ordinate a global response through the united nations based on a clear assessment of the needs of afghans. Not numbers plucked out of thin air with no plan to implement them. If i were in his shoes, i would to implement them. If i were in his shoes, iwould be to implement them. If i were in his shoes, i would be moving heaven and earth to ensure we live up to our obligations and show the world we can be relied on, not least for those women and girls who we encouraged and supported to take on positions of authority and now find themselves the target of taliban utility. Where is the message from the united kingdom that they are not alone . When the Prime Minister took office two years ago, we led the World And Development assistance, but even now, after the taliban have taken control, there is no Urgency Or Seriousness about the humanitarian crisis that confronts us. Can we be honest . It is not honest to claim to be doubling aid to afghanistan when just a few months ago, it was cut in half. He should remember it, Mr Speaker, the only statement he made on afghanistan was when he came to tell us he was cutting the Aid Budget. I wonder when this debate is over if the statement outlined today will be paid for from the budget. The statement outlined today will be paid forfrom the budget. The paid for from the budget. The shadow forei. N paid for from the budget. The shadow Foreign Secretary paid for from the budget. The shadow Foreign Secretary mentioned paid for from the budget. The shadow Foreign Secretary mentioned the i Foreign Secretary mentioned the mount of time that the Prime Minister spoke about afghanistan and the south, can she please remind us how many times she has ever said the Word Afghanistan in his place since she came to the Front Bench . Im she came to the Front Bench . Im lad she she came to the Front Bench . Un glad she raises this point, Mr Speaker be back because it is a sign of a government. Im glad she raids this point because it is a sign of me. Im glad she raids this point because it is a sign of a me. Im glad she raids this point i because it is a sign of a government increasingly desmet that they launch these desperate attacks. Let me tell her what we have been doing in recent months. In april, my colleague the memberfor recent months. In april, my colleague the member for wentworth told the Defence Secretary now with the full withdrawal of nato troops, it is hard to see a future without bloodier conflicts, wider taliban control out mac and greater danger for the afghans who worked with us. It was that if we simply wash our hands and walk away, it is hard to. They do not want to hear it, Mr Speaker because they have been warned and warned and warned about the consequences by members on all sides of this house and they have ignored us they have ignored their own back benches and they have abandoned the people of afghanistan. It is a moment of shame and they should apologise Mr Speaker, it is dishonest to be wood claim to be doubling aid when it was cut. And i wonder if we will find out after this debate that the Refugee Programme that the government unveiled will also be paid foR By rating the Aid Budget. The Foreign Secretary said we cannotjust hand Overfunds Secretary said we cannotjust hand over funds to the taliban, he is right. But that means we have to work harder and smarter. Has he mapped the capacity across afghanistan to deliver aid, spoken to the united nations who intend to provide a presence on the ground . When did he talk to them, what has been agreed . Has he talked to the ngos that have been there . And why has he not yet agreed on a common approach with The American government . Forgive me, Mr Speaker, no one will be reassured by the remarks of the Prime Minister this morning. There is no serious plan to deal with the taliban Rule Or Threat to the uk. We went in degrade the capability of alqaeda. To the uk. We went in degrade the capability of alqaeda. A bit of Huw Military from the Defence Secretary might be in order given his. Given what is unfolding in front of our eyes in kabul airport. A bit of he military might a bit of humility might be in order. Thanks to the success of our Armed Forces there has been no terrorist Attack Launch from afghanistan for 20 years. But now, we have been chased from the country by the taliban, giving encouragement to those who wish us harm. Our Counterterror Operation appears to have collapsed mac what can our Foreign Secretary tell us about building up in the intelligence beyond couple . What leverages a coverage think in practical terms we can exert over the brutal taliban regime that took power through violence and displace a democratically elected government, regime that persecutes women, journalist, lgbtq and religious minorities to name but a few . We should be identifying any leverage that we have. Freezing the assets of the afghan government developing stations and making clear the consequences of afghanistan becoming a haven for terrorism again. We are witnessing the absence of leadership. We are permanent members of the un Security Council but we are behaving as if we have no agency or power. It should be sobering for the government that not one single Speech Today has been uncritical of their approach. Speech today has been uncritical of theirapproach. In Speech Today has been uncritical of their approach. In the cold hard light of the Catastrophe Unfolding in afghanistan, their approach to the world looks so much less unpalatable than the one they are trying to put forth. Promising to maintain the size of the Armed Forces in the election and then cutting them to the smallest size for 300 years. Needlessly repeatedly trashing the alliances that we need in the world and our reputation, deliver you deliberately violating international law and shutting down safe and legal routes to asylum. Who can say now that this is not shameful decision what we are witnessing is mac the decision to withdraw did not need to lead to this. I have heard the Foreign Secretary saying days that there was no alternative but to leave like this. But that is not true. We could have used the last 18 months to plan our exit, to make clear to the afghan people that we have no intention of walking away from them or their ongoing aspiration for democracy, to withdraw with care, and redoubling efforts to be a long Term Partner to the afghan people without troops on the ground. The alternative to chaotic exit is not endless war, but the paste didnt but the patient. We should be inspired by it all of the civilian workers, the arms forces, the diplomatic. All those people who have stayed to remain and help people exit. They stand for something important, they stand for a country that feels a deep sense of responsibility to our fellow human beings. And believe that when we make promises we should keep them. They stand for a country that knows that the world beyond our shores shapes the lives of people in villages, towns and cities across this country. And we cannot ever afford to turn away. They are supported by very many more people than we ever knew. And every Nation And Region people believe that we can be a force for good in the world and through this awful crisis they have found their voice. Womens groups raising the alarms, journalist trying to get afghan collects a safety, local leaders across this country standing up to welcome Refugees. They know it is hard, they know we have to be in it for the long haul, they know it relies on Give Notjust take to build friendships and alliances. A government that was honest with itself would see that alongside the united states, we have to have a broader set of alliances so we can operate an independent Foreign Policy again. Not to lecture eu countries to show leadership, but to do this ourselves and lead by example with Generosity And Decency and step forward when it matters, not go missing when things get tough. I self confident country is one that goes out with Courage And Conviction and sheds light notjust night around the world. That is the light we shone for two decades in afghanistan. In short, it is everything that this government is not. So today, he has a choice. He could read out those notes he has in the front of him, or he could tear them up and he could tell us the truth. How will we help them . How will we repair this . How will we rise to the scale of the challenges show we are a serious country again, prepared to engage in the world and stand up for values, especially when it is hard . He has hours, not days to make this right would so many afghan people and repair our reputation around the world. We have so much to be proud of as a country. Can it again include our government . Foreign secretary. Thank you, Mr Speaker. Nia start by thanking honourable members across the house for the Contributions Today . I believe the debate has demonstrated why this Houses Voice had to be heard and why it was right to recall parliament. We heard important speeches and interventions on all sides expressing deep concerns about the Situation that we can all see in front of our eyes unfolding in afghanistan. Together, we think of the sacrifices made by so many of our Armed Forces to keep us safe at home, to lay the foundations for hope and a better life for people in afghanistan. I know that there are many honourable members across the house who have served in the Armed Forces. Some in afghanistan and just how important that our response the current crisis will be on all sides. Mr speaker, my right honourable friend from maidenhead made a very powerful contribution on the gains made in the last 20 years protecting and supporting women and girls. The honourable member made the case that the support that we give to them. And i hope that the Scottish Government will help us with that re sentiment and i will take him up on the overture that i think in good faith he made. I also want to thank another member who spoke particularly powerful about the generation of women and girls empowered by the uk and western intervention over the last 20 years. She is absolutely arrived and we must do everything we can to safeguard those gains that were made. My honourable friend from bournemouth east made some important points about the over centralised paradigm that had been applied in afghanistan and that was echoed by the another member. I think there is some agreement across the house about that. On another member gave voice to the frustrations i know many veterans feel as we withdraw and he also made the important point and he also made the important point and i know he was referring to ptsd and i know he was referring to ptsd and other conditions the importance of dealing with the mental health of our veterans. Of dealing with the mental health of ourveterans. It of dealing with the mental health of our veterans. It will be a very difficult time for many of those. difficult time for many of those. I will give way. I thank him for giving way. I wondered if he would join me in paying tribute to the many brave members of our Armed Forces who have returned to face the world after their service in afghanistan with life changing injuries and if you would also join me in thanking the Staff Past and present of the defence medical Rehabilitation Centre for the tireless work they have done to help them . T tireless work they have done to help them . ~ ~ tireless work they have done to help them . ~. ,. , them . I think her. We pay tribute to all of those them . I think her. We pay tribute to all of those who them . I think her. We pay tribute to all of those who have them . I think her. We pay tribute to all of those who have returned i them . I think her. We pay tribute to all of those who have returned and i all of those who have returned and paid the price through physical or mental health injuries and of course a huge tribute goes out to all of those organisations who are supporting them. Can ijust make a little bit of progress. I will come back to the honourable gentleman. I also thought that the honourable gentlemen from barnsley central spoke particularly powerfully about the need for a concerted international response. And the right honourable lady for Hackney North gave voice to her constituent Veteran Jack North gave voice to her constituent veteranjack cummings and the sacrifice that were made by so many on the battlefield. Another member gave a powerful speech and made the point that how we leave is as important if not more important than the question of withdrawal it self. I can tell him because he asked specific question that we tested very rigorously the approach with our us allies when they consulted us. Another member gave witness to the many terrified afghans who now face the threat and the risk that comes with the taliban control. I give way. T comes with the taliban control. I rive wa. , comes with the taliban control. I rive wa. ,. ,. , give way. I am very grateful. I have had lots of give way. I am very grateful. I have had lots of constituents give way. I am very grateful. I have had lots of constituents get give way. I am very grateful. I have had lots of constituents get in i had lots of constituents get in Touch Today to say that the thing they are most anxious about and i think many members have reflected this today is those people who are terrified in Afghanistan Today wanting to get out, many we want to help get out, but for some reason we are saying it is 20,000 we will take over several years, are saying it is 20,000 we will take overseveralyears, but are saying it is 20,000 we will take over several years, but only 5000 this year. If the government could just simply say whoever manages to get here this year, we will take this year, i think that would be a significant advance. this year, i think that would be a significant advance. This year, i think that would be a significant advance. I come on to address that significant advance. I come on to address that point. Significant advance. I come on to address that point. I significant advance. I come on to address that point. I understand | address that point. I understand what he has said. The Memberfor North Shropshire gave a courageous speech. Im going to make a little bit of progress. I will do when i come onto that point. There was a truly courageous speech given and i welcome that contribution and we welcome that contribution and we welcome him back to the chamber. Another member asked us about the application about the british Council Staff and whether it applies. It does and were trying to make sure it work and be applied. I will come on to explain the practical arrangements. Will come on to explain the practicalarrangements. I will come on to explain the practical arrangements. I will make a little bit of progress. There were many other heartfelt insightful and truly available contributions in the House Today. Mr speaker, i listen very carefully to the labour Front Bench. The leader made clear his support for the decision to withdraw. I think that is clear. He listed a range of things he wants the government to do quite rightly including supporting the un efforts, taking action in the un Security Council, support for nato and ordinary afghans and not allowing Money Aid to go to the taliban. We are doing all of those things and rightly so. The right honourable gentlemen did not give a single example of an action he would have taken that we have not. Not one. But then issued a series of searing criticisms. The shadow Foreign Secretary took a similar approach and i will come to address the various points that they both made. I will make a bit of progress. I would pay welcome i would welcome what she said about our ambassadoR Bristow and the team on the ground. In case there was any doubt, the shadow foreign minister said yesterday we are as a Labour Party have no problem with The American decision to withdraw troops. So they agreed to the decision to withdraw, but with his predictable proclivity for hindsight. The right honourable gentlemen criticises the consequences of a decision that he backed. And he does so with no serious or credible alternative of his own. Not even a hint, a reminder of shakespeares adage, the empty vessel makes the greatest sound. So, Mr Speaker, in any crisis, it is how you respond that is critical. The government has two overriding priorities. First we must evacuate our own people. The british nationals, the dual nationals who now want to leave. Those who have served our country so loyally now want to leave. Those who have served our country so loyalty and we must live up to the best traditions of this country and playing our part in offering Safe Haven to those afghans who are now fleeing persecution from the taliban as Refugees. I give way. Im persecution from the taliban as Refugees. I give way. Refugees. I give way. Im very grateful Refugees. I give way. Im very grateful he Refugees. I give way. Im very grateful. He is Refugees. I give way. Im very grateful. He is absolutely i Refugees. I give way. Im very grateful. He is absolutely right| grateful. He is absolutely right that the united kingdom makes this generous offer to the people of pakistan who need somewhere safe to come. But there is concern among my constituents that we dont in being generous and open open the door to those who would wish to come here and do us harm. So can the Foreign Secretary confirm that robust checks will be in place to ensure that no one who would wish to do us harm would be able to get through . Thahk would be able to get through . Thank ou. M would be able to get through . Thank you. My honourable would be able to get through . Thank you. My honourable friend would be able to get through . Thank you. My honourable friend is you. My honourable friend is absolutely right. Of course we need to be open hearted and generous, but if we were to allow people to come to this country who subsequently attack this country, we would be backin attack this country, we would be back in his house debating a very different set of issues, therefore we need to make sure that we have some basic checks in place. Also to make sure that the seats on this plane go to those we want them to go to. Ive been very generous im going to make some progress. I want to pay tribute to those leading this work. Ive already mentioned some people the ambassador for example. There is a phenomenal cross wide team of military personnel. Home office if issues pin Home Secretary and they work hand in glove to save others to make sure they get out others to make sure they get out others Before themselves. I also want to thank the rapid Deployment Team that flew in and the troops that went into protect and secure the airport so that we could prosecute this Evacuation Effort. We are doing everything we can to support this effort. Its being supported by military planners and they are working round the clock. And i pay tribute to them. I give way. And i pay tribute to them. I give wa. And i pay tribute to them. I give wa. , ~~, and i pay tribute to them. I give way. Can i specifically ask him about the way. Can i specifically ask him about the arab way. Can i specifically ask him about the arab relocation i way. Can i specifically ask him about the arab Relocation Programme . Will he expanded notjust cover the british council, but also working for the uk, british council, but also working forthe uk, aid british council, but also working for the uk, aid agencies, contractors who work for a uk funded programmes and who are also in fear of their lives who are hiding from the taliban being chased by them as we speak . He will include them will he include them as well . As members from all sides have called to happen. Let members from all sides have called to ha en. , members from all sides have called to haen. ,. , to happen. Let me come onto the totali of to happen. Let me come onto the totality of the to happen. Let me come onto the totality of the arrangement i to happen. Let me come onto the totality of the arrangement and i to happen. Let me come onto the I Totality of the arrangement and that should answer your point. The Evacuation Effort has three strands. By Evacuation Effort has three strands. By the way, it has been in place for four months. First it is worth recalling we advise all british nationals to leave afghanistan back in april. Many hundreds did so on commercialflights for in april. Many hundreds did so on commercial flights for the benefit of Councillor Support Counsellor support. We switched to charter flights to get people out. The first flights to get people out. The first flight left on sunday with around 150 Uk Nationals and their dependents on board. They arrived backin dependents on board. They arrived back in the country safe and sound. In the last 2a hours 646 people back in the country safe and sound. In the last 24 hours 646 people have been evacuated a combination of nationals and afghans who work for us and uk allies. There will be eight flights today. I will make some more progress. I only have four minutes. The crucial point was that in order to secure the airport we had to inject 600 British Forces, we had to inject 600 British Forces, we had thousands come in from The Americans. Without that, we would not be able to get any of them to the Airport Or Process them in the way we need to. The second strand of the evacuation beyond the british nationals is the arab programme also set up by the Defence Secretary back in april to help those who work for us and who now face the risk of retribution precisely because of the loyalty they shared the Mac Show to our country. To date, we have resettled over 3300 Afghans Staff a nd resettled over 3300 Afghans Staff and their families, resettled over 3300 Afghans Staff and theirfamilies, that it resettled over 3300 Afghans Staff and their families, that it includes 2000 since april, the most generous scheme offered anywhere in the world and rightly so. I give way. Im and rightly so. I give way. Im crateful and rightly so. I give way. Im grateful for and rightly so. I give way. In grateful for giving way. And i think gratefulfor giving way. And i think and for all he is doing. The united kingdom led the way on the friends of Syria Group in convening the international community. Will the united kingdom to the same with afghanistan to get countries like the uae, Jordan And Kuwait who are also part of the Nato Action Afghanistan . He also part of the Nato Action Afghanistan . Also part of the Nato Action Afghanistan . Also part of the Nato Action Afthanistan . ,. , , afghanistan . He is absolutely right to raise this afghanistan . He is absolutely right to raise this. Im afghanistan . He is absolutely right to raise this. Im going afghanistan . He is absolutely right to raise this. Im going to afghanistan . He is absolutely right to raise this. Im going to come i afghanistan . He is absolutely right to raise this. Im going to come on| to raise this. Im going to come on to raise this. Im going to come on to that point if he allows me to. The third strain of the Evacuation Scheme Plan to provide an upper Spoke Asylum Offer to settle 20,000 Refugees'>Afghan Refugees over five years. Let me say as the son of a refugee, i am deeply proud this government is continuing the bighearted tradition of the british people and offering Safe Haven. We are getting the nationals out, those that work for us out and we are providing a lifeline to the most vulnerable. I can also tell the House Today that we have contacted all of the scholars in afghanistan notjust to tell them they can come, but to actively make arrangement for the upcoming flights to the uk. Mr speaker, at a time of crisis, we also need to look towards a longer term. There are four areas that need particular focus. Counterterrorism. We must never again let afghanistan become a haven for terrorist. We work very Closely with our partners. Secondly, the international community must be prepared to respond to the humanitarian plight caused by the talibans campaign. The uk has already using our convening powder, our aid the uk has already using our convening powder, ourAid Budget the uk has already using our convening powder, our Aid Budget to galvanise a global response. Thirdly, we must work to safeguard regional stability and that will require us to work with different partners and require engagement with key regional players including india, china, russia, pakistan and central asian states. However difficult that might prove and outside of our Comfort Zone and we will be fully supporting the efforts of the Secretary General of the un. The fourth area is human rights and accountability. We will hold both through our domestic sanctions regime but also working with the indians who chaired the un sanctions regime for afghanistan to make sure that we can exercise and and moderating influence on the afghanistan regime. We will be convening a special meeting of g7 leaders to consider and concerted in court made a response. We will be looking at the question of a Contact Group for international partners. We plan to have next month to focus minds and raise funds for the humanitarian response. We are raising ouraid humanitarian response. We are raising our Aid Budgets. Im now required to put the question. Im now required to put the question, the question is that this house question, the question is that this house consider the Situation.
