Good morning from the birthplace of shakespeare. Covid Restrictions may have lifted but destinations like this rely on International Visitors. I will find out how businesses have fed this summer. Shockwaves run through british athletics as an olympic Silver Medallist is suspended for an alleged doping violation. Cj Ujah Part of the 4x100 Metre Relay Team has tested positive for a banned substance. He, and the rest of the team, face being stripped of their medals. Good morning. We are surrounded by approximately 100,000 sunflowers here in hertfordshire. There is sunshine in the forecast but also areas of cloud and heavy, thundery showers across the north of the Country accompanied by brisk winds. The up in about half an hour. The full round up. Its Friday 13th august. Our top story. Six people, including a suspected gunman, have died in a shooting in a residential area of plymouth. Police were called to the Keyham Area of The City at 6pm and a critical incident was declared. The victims include two women and two men and a child aged under ten. The local mp, Luke Pollard has called the Incident Unspea kably awful. 0ur reporter, john kay, has more. Police worked through the night, securing the scene One Mile from the centre of plymouth. It was here on Biddick Drive in the Keyham Area of The City that The Incident started around six oclock yesterday evening. Neighbours told the bbc they heard shouting at one property, a door slamming, then gunshots. Other residents said the gunman then continued shooting in the surrounding streets. We sat in the Back Garden having a cup of coffee and heard four gunshots. Then we seen obviously the ambulance, helicopters, trying to land in the park. I heard a shot, walked round the corner, bumped into a shotgun a bloke with a shotgun seen a woman on the doorstep, walked over and helped her. Four people died at the scene, two were male and two were female. Anotherfemale died in hospital a short time later. Its not clear how old they were but they all died from gunshot wounds. Police said the sixth person killed was believed to be the offender. He also died at the scene. 0fficers said the shootings were not thought to be terror related. After speaking to the Chief Constable of Devon And Cornwall Police, the Home Secretary Priti patel said on twitter that she was shocked by The Incident. She urged the community to remain calm. Devon and Police'>Cornwall Police have told people in area not to speculate on Social Media about what might have happened here or why and not to share any distressing images on Social Media. A local School And Church will open today for the community to come together, as they try to understand why a Summers Evening in devon turned into a Mass Shooting. Jon kay, Bbc News, plymouth. Well be talking to local mps Luke Pollard and Johnny Mercer later this morning. Taliban militants in afghanistan have captured the Countrys Second Biggest City, kandahar, as they continue their rapid advance across the Country. Uk soldiers will arrive in kabul this weekend to help an estimated 4,000 british nationals to leave the Country. Us troops have also been deployed. Ramzan karmali has this report. Another day of taliban advances saw the militants move into herat, afghanistans third largest city, and ghazni, less than 100 kilometres from the capital, kabul. In the last week, the taliban have taken control of 11 provincial capitals. They also claim to have taken kandahar, which fell overnight. The uk, us and otherforeign troops withdrew from afghanistan after 20 years of military operations, but Now Britain is deploying 600 troops to relocate Uk Nationals, afghan staff and interpreters. The us is also sending 3,000 soldiers back. This is a temporary mission with a narrow focus. As with all deployments of our troops into harms way, our commanders have the inherent right of Self Defence and any attack on them can and will be met with a forceful and appropriate response. But one british politician and former soldier is clear as to who is to blame for the current turmoil. These are our problems, our decisions we made to 10, 10,15 years ago, of not talking to the taliban, not training up afghan forces, but most critically, imposing Western Solutions on a Country that wasnt ready for it, by any means. Peace talks with the taliban are still ongoing in doha, but they seem far removed from what is going on on the ground. The rapid takeover of territory by the insurgents has been startling. According to the un, more than 1,000 afghan civilians have been killed in the last month, with thousands more travelling to kabul to seek refuge. 0ne estimate says that more than 70,000 children arrived in the capital in recent days, with most sleeping rough. But with the fall of the Significantly strategic city of ghazni, the fear is that kabul could fall sooner rather than later. Ramzan karmali, Bbc News. At 7. 30am today, we will be speaking to Defence Secretary, Ben Wallace. That is coming up a little later. Analysis of the spread of covid within Uk Hospitals has shown that during the first wave, more than one in ten patients caught the virus after being admitted for an unrelated illness. The Transmission Rates vary considerably depending on where the patients were treated which the authors of the Study Say demands urgent investigation. 0ur health correspondent, naomi grimley, has more. Falling ill with covid while in Hospitalfor Something else was one of the most worrying features of the first wave of the pandemic. A new study from a group of Uk Universities has examined the numbers to see how common it was. The researchers found that at least one in ten Hospital Patients with covid were infected after admission. At the peak this rose to more like one in five. Overall, this research suggests 11,800 people may have been infected this way and possibly more because early data is unclear. Crucially, there were big variations between similar types of hospital and thats down to different preventative measures. Even at the peak of the outbreak, we saw that some busy hospitals still managed to maintain good Infection Prevention and control. That meant that there was good hand washing, there was good testing of patients so the right patients were tested and kept separately from non infected patients, better ventilation on some of the wards would have helped and access to plentiful supply of ppe would have helped. These are all counsels of perfection, we didnt know all that at the start of the outbreak. We know there were challenges around testing and challenges around the availability of ppe. The researchers say the levels of Hospital Acquired Infections for covid are now much lower, thanks to the Vaccination Programme and a better understanding of how the virus spreads. Naomi grimley, Bbc News. The father of american Singer Britney spears, has agreed to step down as her conservator, after 13 years. The Pop Star has been mounting a series of legal challenges to the Court Agreement that gave her Father Control over her estate and other aspects of her life. A lawyer representing britney says its another step toward justice. 0ur Correspondent Barbara Plett Usher has more. This has been quite a year for Britney Spears. She finally began to speak out about the arrangement that controls her life. The target of that anger was her father, jamie, the man who became her conservator after she apparently suffered a breakdown 13 years ago. It is a sort of Guardian Role to handle all of her affairs. During recent court hearings, the singer accused him of using her money for himself and of abusing his power. Speaking directly to the judge, she said she wanted more control of her finances and her body. She even alleged that the conservatorship was forcing her to use Birth Control when she wanted to have a baby. Mr spears has also become a focus of angerforfans in the free britney movement. He says the attacks are unjustified and that there are no grounds for removing him but that he is now willing to step down to avoid a public battle with his daughter, when the time is right. The singer still cant spend her vast fortune as she pleases. Its likely her father will eventually be replaced by a professional accountant. But her fans and her lawyer are hailing what they see as a vindication of her position and an important step towards setting her free. Barbara plett usher, Bbc News, los angeles. Lets Take A Look at todays papers, and many have the news about the plymouth shooting on the front. The times reports on multiple fatalities and quotes one witness as saying a gunman broke into a Semidetached House and then escaped through a park. The daily mail says six people were shot dead and that local mps urged residents to stay calm. The guardian reports that the us and uk have scrambled reinforcements to kabul to help evacuate their diplomats, soldiers and citizens as well as thousands of afghans as the taliban advances towards the capital. Back to our main story this morning, the major Firearms Incident in plymouth which has left six people dead. Lets take a closer look at what we know so far. Just after six oclock last night, Devon And Cornwall Police were called to Biddick Drive in the Keyham Area of The City. Police and ambulance crews attended the scene and a critical incident was declared. Six fatalities have now been confirmed. Five people including the suspect died at the scene. Another female victim died later in hospital. There are reports that one of those killed, was a child. Lets speak now to the mp for Plymouth Sutton and devonport, Luke Pollard. Good morning to you. First of all, can i ask you whether you can update us with any information you have . The city in is waking up to just shrug in plymouth is waking up to awful news. We are awaiting confirmation from Police of the names and ages of the victims but our local paper is reporting that one of the people who died is a small child under ten, four people waking up in plymouth around the Country will be unspeakably awful. As a community, we need today to come together to make sense of the Events Yesterday and we have got Community Centres in churches, and schools, opening across the Keyham Area. To give people a space for people to be able to share their experience, how they are feeling about the grim events we saw yesterday but we are bracing ourselves for more grim News Today when potentially the names of the victims and more details come out from the Police. Is It Victims and more details come out from the Police. From the Police. Is it any clearer to ou, from the Police. Is it any clearer to you. I from the Police. Is it any clearer to you, i appreciate from the Police. Is it any clearer to you, i appreciate you from the Police. Is it any clearer to you, i appreciate you are i from the Police. Is it any clearer. To you, i appreciate you are waiting for clarity from the Police, but what is your understanding of the sequence of events, the time span between the time that something started to occur, and as we understand it, was maybe in a house, and spilled out into the streets. Can you take us through your understanding . That can you take us through your understanding . Can you take us through your understanding . Can you take us through your understandin . . , understanding . At The Moment, we still do not have understanding . At The Moment, we still do not have a understanding . At The Moment, we still do not have a clear understanding . At The Moment, we still do not have a clear timeline i still do not have a clear timeline of the event yesterday. I have spoken to the Police a number of times last night and the events looked confused, there seems to have been activities over a reasonably large area around Biddick Drive in keyham, so we have quite allowed part quite a large part of the community cordoned off. Im expecting Police statements later today to give more information about from their understanding What Has happened, but because of the severity of The Incident itself, the timeline still looks confused at The Moment. And the number of victims beyond the six, the six people who died, there are a number of people still in hospital and we are trying to get totalfigures still in hospital and we are trying to get total figures on the number of people involved at The Moment. At The Moment, its hard to say at full clarity where that is but its important that that information is shared with the community as soon as possible because with that, we will be able to start putting together and making sense of this. Theres lots of people who were literally in their homes on the streets opening their homes on the streets opening the doors to the commotion to see people on the pavement having been shot outside their homes. So there is an awful to people for whom access to the Emergency Support which is badly necessary to make sense of this, and then make sure that what they saw is shared with the Police, can happen as soon as possible today. You the Police, can happen as soon as possible today the Police, can happen as soon as possible today. You have heard, as we have seen possible today. You have heard, as we have seen on possible today. You have heard, as we have seen on our possible today. You have heard, as we have seen on our reports i possible today. You have heard, as we have seen on our reports this i we have seen on our reports this morning, people who live locally who as you describe them, they came Face To face with someone on the street with a gun. And you are the local mp. Its really worrying. It mp. Its really worrying. It certainly is. Keyham is a brilliant community, a community where you know your neighbour and you look out for one another, where there is a strong sense of heart and togetherness. And what we know from the events that started unfolding yesterday is that the initial concern for everyone was to keep others safe, to encourage them to stay inside, get a sense that families were safe, large numbers of families were safe, large numbers of families stay in the area so there is an overly strong Community Bond between the communities there. And that was the initial action from the Community Yesterday and i expect to see more of that heart from the Community Today as he starts to make sense of what is deeply grim news. Plymouth is a wonderfully safe city normally, this is the kind of event we see on the news that this doesnt happen here, thats a line that people would have heard from other events when something goes drastically horrible as it did yesterday. But its certainly true, plymouth is a safe city and the community is a strong space together. To see that, and witness it outside your front door, to see that level of awfulness in your community, is something which im afraid its going to take our Community A Wee while to be able to process and then be able to come together. But i know that we will, because the community is strong, and we have those community leaders, those people that witnessed events, all determined that we will look after Each Other in the days ahead. I can tell, mr pollard, you have been talking to people locally. Are you hearing any individual stories of peoples accounts . Individuals helping others, may be getting them off the streets, are you hearing specific stories about people who may be put themselves at risk to help others . In may be put themselves at risk to help others . May be put themselves at risk to help others . In an event like this, there is an help others . In an event like this, there is an immediate, help others . In an event like this, there is an immediate, a help others . In an event like this, there is an immediate, a of help others . In an event like this, | there is an immediate, a of stories shared immediately, on Social Media with concern. It is important at The Moment that we dont speculate about What Happened from start to finish. But there are people for whom they were immediately concerned for a family, friends and neighbours, to be able to see this unfolding in your street immediately in front of your street immediately in front of you and see the Police-response'>Police Response, it is incredible that not only did we have such a speedy and considerable Police-response'>Police Response but the ambulances including what looked like four air ambulances, notjust coming from plymouth and the South West but for a as southampton. From as far afield as southampton. When you have four Helicopters Landing in your community, it is something the community, it is something the community notices. What we have seen from last night and all throughout the night, after the news that potentially a young child is involved, very few people were able to get a proper nights sleep, is that those conversations and that support has continued throughout the evening and will need to continue today as people start processing whats happened and making sense of whats happened and making sense of what they saw, especially for those people who live immediately on Biddick Drive. It is a Cul De Sac where the shootings took place but it interacts with one of the major roads in The City, and a busy set of streets in keyham. This will be an area that is known for a lot of people, a popular spot for people walking, just round the corner from a Little Park which is popular with dog walkers, so theres a sense that this has happened in the heart of a Community And Today we will be doing everything we can as a community to come together to make sense of the awfully grim news that i am afraid i suspect will continue coming today. There is talk may be of a Press Conference a little later on this morning from Police. I know its very early days in this story, immediately people ask questions about people having access to a firearm, we dont know who the individual is, it is inevitable that those questions will be asked. {lit those questions will be asked. Of course, and we need the Police in the first instance to have the space to secure and assess the crime scene, to understand who the victims are and who the shooter was, to get that in information whether that is legal or an illegal firearm, that in information whether that is legal or an illegalfirearm, it is legal or an illegalfirearm, it is too early to circulate. Inevitably those questions will be asked and people will want to find out more information, and that includes people scaring the internet for images and videos of the Events Yesterday. People scouring the internet. We have sadly seen a number of images shared, so if your viewers are tempted to do so, can i please ask that they take a moment before they look at any digital content to make sure they are thinking about the families and the community here and treating everyone with some Dignity And Respect at this time, because this community in keyham is going through an enormously difficult time. The most horrendous events have happened at The End of the most horrendous year for many people and we need to first of all make sure there was space for the family and the community to process What Has happened and space for the Police to ensure that they have all the information they need to give reassurance to the community, they understand What Has happened, and they understand the Healing Process for what is an awful for plymouth. Going back to what do you know of the sequence of events, as you make very clear, we awaIt Clarification from the Police. Is It Clarification from the Police. Is it new understanding that some people who were in the neighbourhood, local Street Or Close by, were also amongst the victims . The picture emerging is of an incident in a household, that has been described by our witnesses, but then a suggestion that there with further shootings out in the neighbourhood, is that your understanding . Is that your understanding . Theres an awful lot is that your understanding . Theres an awful lot of is that your understanding . Theres an awful lot of local is that your understanding . Theres an awful lot of local residents i is that your understanding . Theres an awful lot of local residents in i an awful lot of local residents in the community who believe that to be the community who believe that to be the case. At this point what im very keen to see is that the Police-issue-information'>Police Issue Information that they can stack up, that can be confirmed, because there will be a lot of people eager to find out whats happened, eagerto people eager to find out whats happened, eager to understand who the people are who have been involved. This is a tight knit community and at 6pm last night, that would have been a busy community as well so theres a fear that its notjust confined to one family or one group of people. And i expect the Police to be able to share further information about who the victims are on the timeline of events to answer those questions. Thank you for your time, Luke Pollard, Labour Mp for Plymouth Sutton and devonport. Lets get more on this now from Local Bbc reporter, Ewan Murrie whos at the scene. This is as close as i can get at The Moment. Police here on the ground are not willing to give me any further information beyond what we have in the statement so far. We know officers are still investigating, its likely to be cordoned off for some time. The time is just coming up to 6 45am. Lets have a look at the sport. The spectre of drugs in sport, linked to the olympics has emerged. Because of a test, tell us What Has happened. If you think of the magical moments at the olympics gave us, this was one of them. The mens four by 100 metres relay, this is cj ujah, who won the opening leg. I think they were pipped to the gold by the italians by 100th of a second, a magical moment, but it has now been tainted by a doping violation. Shocking news has emerged that cj ujah, part of the mens 4x100m Relay Team that won silverjust last week, has tested positive for a banned substance. Hes been suspended from competition and if upheld, it would be the most high profile Doping Offence by a british athlete at any 0lympics. He and the rest of the Relay Team all face being stripped of their medals. The former 0lympic Silver Medallist Kriss Akabussi says he feels for the other three. Dumbfounded, disbelief, denial. Some kind of, is there a way that i can keep my medal, it wasnt me . You know. I guess you, its praying or meditating or some sort of, can this all go away . I reallyjust cant imagine what those other three chaps are going through. And how cj is going to look them in the eye and realise that Hes England struggled on the Opening Day of the second test against india at lords. Joe root won the toss and put the tourists into bat but it all went terribly wrong. Kl rahul and his Opening Partner Rohit sharma made a terrific start, putting on 126 for the first wicket. Rohit eventually falling to james anderson. But rahul went on to score his first overseas test hundred. At the close of Play India are 276 for three, rahul still there on 127 not out. Brentford fans have been waiting almost 74 years for tonight. They will be playing in the top flight of English Football for the first time since 1947 when they take on arsenal later at the brentford community stadium. Brentford are nicknamed the bees and manager Thomas Frank was buzzing ahead of the game. We are a bumblebee, theyre not deSigned to fly. And we are still able to fly into the Premier League. And we will constantly do everything we can to keep flying as high as possible, and that means two things to me, very simple. One, win the next game, thats on friday against arsenal. And then i know the next game is against crystal palace, thats as far as ive looked ahead. And staying with football, celtic are into the Europa League Play Off round after a 7 2 Aggregate Win over czech sidejablonec. Theyll meet dutch Side Az Alkmaar next. However, it wasnt good news for fellow Scottish Premiership side stjohnstone. They lost 5 3 on aggregate to turkeys galatasarey. Their European Dream still continues though, as theyll now play in the Europa Conference League Play Off with the first leg next week. Its a shame for stjohnstone because they played very well in that match. That is the sport. Thank you. Have you managed to avoid getting a Horsefly Bite this summer . They are very painful. If you have, count yourself lucky. The mix of warm weather and humid conditions has led to an increase in the number of people needing treatment for the often painful bites. Breakfast s Jayne Mccubbin is at a farm in the wirral this morning with more. Good morning. Have you been, its one of those things, everyone goes, have you been bitten by a horsefly . They are very painful bites. Stings they absolutely are and it is the terminator like ability, you pack them away and they say theyre in your they stay there in your neck. Whatever you call them, clegs, hands appere, who has had a bite . Yes, and the horses, some horror stories. We will hear them later on. Dramatic music. Im amy reid, and i really hate the horseflies. They are the bane of my summer. Every summer . Every summer. I was just saying to my husband that id managed to get through this summer without being bitten and then last week we visited an Alpaca Farm and they well and truly got me. This was the result. And my right foot is probably two or three times the size of my left foot, you cant see any of my bones, you cant see my ankle. It is just a great big red hot foot, and that extended all the way up to my knee. This is the cause of the pain. Mandibles like saws, they cut, rip and slice, rather than peer. Rip and slice, rather than pierce. Its a sharp prick, and what theyre doing is actually cutting the Skin And Notjust piercing it. Once i know theyve bitten me, its kind of a race against time to take antihistamines and get some ice on it. They tend to swell up regardless of the efforts i take. Hives, swelling, dizziness, weakness, wheezing. Thats a lot of damage for a little creature which is now out in force. Im doctor tim cockerill, and im an entomologist. And im an etomologist. And i actually really like horseflies, theyre really fascinating insects. Basically, in the summer, thats when we get this period when the Adult Horsefly are out on the wing, flying around. In order to reproduce, the females need a blood meal. And so thats the thing that theyre doing at this time of year, is theyre flying around looking for a host, a large animal, sometimes a cow, sometimes a sheep and sometimes were unlucky, sometimes thats a human. But remember, just like bees, these are important pollinators. They do have a purpose beyond bothering you. They are horrible. The victims include two women and two men and a child aged under ten. The local mp, Luke Pollard has called the Incident Unspea kably awful. Our reporter, Jon Kay has more. After speaking to the Chief Constable of Devon And Cornwall Police, the Home Secretary Priti patel said on twitter that she was shocked by The Incident. She urged the community to remain calm. Devon and Police'>Cornwall Police have told people in this area not to speculate on Social Media about what might have happened here or why and not to share any distressing images on Social Media. Lots of people who were in their homes, on the streets, opening the doors to the commission, seeing people on the pavement having been shot outside their homes. This sort of thing does not happen in plymouth. This community is very tight knit. People this morning are struggling to come to terms with What Happened here last night. Particularly on a Summers Evening where they were out enjoying the time on an evening that had brightened up after a very miserable day. That investigation is continuing today. As you heard, it is not considered to be a terror related incident. Those investigations and the questioning of local people and trying to work out What Happened as it unfolded with the frightening experience will continue today. Taliban militants in afghanistan have captured the Countrys Second Biggest City kandahar, as they continue their rapid advance across the Country. Uk soldiers will arrive in kabul this weekend to help an estimated a,000 british nationals to leave the Country. Us troops have also been deployed. I have seen messages on Social Media by afghan saying, the troops are coming back to help their own citizens but they are leaving afghanistan behind. In kabul, people have spent the night in Fear And Worry trying to figure out what will happen next. Flights out what will happen next. Flights out of The City are getting full very quickly. Out of The City are getting full very quickly out of The City are getting full ve cuickl. , ~ ,. Lets get the latest now from our political correspondent, nick eardley. Good morning to you. There have been lots of comments about the Uk Position in this. Not onlyjust in terms of safety regarding nationals but also the state that afghanistan is being left in. Is being left in. Good morning. We not the is being left in. Good morning. We got the confirmation is being left in. Good morning. We got the confirmation last is being left in. Good morning. We got the confirmation last night is being left in. Good morning. We| got the confirmation last night that around 600 paratroopers are going to afghanistan to help those british citizens who are still there. It was last friday the Foreign Office said any brits who were left should get out. We think there are still about a000 there. We have seen a evacuation take place over the next he weeks. There will be an ambassador who stays in afghanistan but they had moved down to the embassy enable bn what is being called a secure location. There is genuine worry in the Uk Government about what they see as a rapidly deteriorating situation in afghanistan. There are questions being asked about the decision to remove troops last month and a situation that left afghanistan in. We are seeing some criticism from tory mps. A couple of them last night, the chairs of the influential and foreign select committee talked about the speed that troops were taken out and how that left afghan forces with the full of the major cities. Some former Defence Staff raising concerns about that as well. There will be questions for the government on that. I am not sure where it leaves us. We do not think there will be a clamour to send a Significant number of troops back beyond that evacuation. A lot of people are less unhappy with the way this has all panned out and the government is increasingly worried about the deteriorating situation. Key very much. Well be speaking to Defence Secretary Ben Wallace at 7 30am. The father of Britney Spears has agreed to step down as her conservator after i3 years. The Pop Star has been mounting a series of legal challenges to the Court Agreement that gave her Father Control over her estate and other aspects of her life. A lawyer representing britney says its another step toward justice. Our correspondent Barbara Plett Usher has more. This has been quite a year for Britney Spears. She finally began to speak out about the arrangement that controls her life. The target of that anger was her father, jamie, the man who became her conservator after she apparently suffered a Breakdown I3 years ago. We will feel the effects of that in the uk whether it is through the refugee crisis, the security situation, the repercussions are really huge. I am surprised we have not heard more from the Prime Minister and others about the role of the uk in this. If it were your son, your daughter you have lost. Eating every day you get up, was it worth it . You see what is happening and the lack of real leadership and comments and understanding from political leaders. It is heartbreaking to watch. Does it threaten british security and the security britons in this Country . Without doubt. Politicians over the years had been completely negligent when it comes to getting people to understand why we are in afghanistan. This is viewed as international projects, vanity projects for politicians. The reason for being there after 9 ii was very clear. We got wrapped up in iraq. You need an enduring commitment to these people. The taliban live there, they will never leave. We could provide a real backbone of support through the support by special forces capability. Support through the support by specialforces capability. Of support through the support by special forces capability. Of course you build up the rest of the afghan army and you can do that in ten, is years. That support has to be enduring. The british antarctic survey says it doesnt know when scientists can return to one of its research stations, because of the danger posed by a giant iceberg thats almost the size of greater london. Experts are tracking the mass from space as it circles the antarctic coastline as our Science Correspondent Jonathan Amos reports. It was the bravest and gentlest of icy kisses. A colossal iceberg, a 7a, weighing billions of tonnes, scrapes past a region of the antarctic. It was The Moment the british antarctic survey had been expected for months. The expectation was it would knock into and dislodge another vast and unstable piece of ice sitting in front of the survey s research station. The Fact Nothing was dislodged this time of the frustration. Until the unstable lies in front of it comes away, the base must close every winter on safety grounds. And this impacts the world leading science that can be done at this important location. It is here they discovered and continue to monitor the hole in the ozone layer. Icebergs the size of a 7a are impressive but theyre not necessarily an indicator of climate change. The antarctic balances the amount of snow falling on the interior of the continent by routinely discharging blocks of ice at its margins. We dont have that long record of carving satellite imagery in antarctica and it is quite hard to tell the frequency of carving events. We do know that Ice France in parts of the antarctic peninsula are further back than some of the historical locations. The survey will continue to track it and the behaviour of the Ice Shelf. It is entirely possible that big bergs gentle embrace, delivered unseen damage and if that is the case the expected breakaway of unstable ice could yet happen in the days ahead. In the days ahead. This is one of the challenges of living in such a dynamic environment, a floating shelf of ice, 600 feet thick. It becomes unstable eventually, breaks off and drifts away. Now its time for the weather with carol. Karen is tiptoeing among The Sunflowers. Good morning. Carol. I am surrounded by beautiful sunflowers. There are 100,000 in bloom as we go through the next few weeks will stop you can see from the aerial shot how beautiful they are. They are pointing east. By The End of the day the heads will be pointing west as they follow The Sun. Not much sun and the Forecast Today. The forecast is of heavy, and any showers, breezy with a little sunshine but not as much as we would expect at this stage in august. Low pressure is driving the weather, anchored to the uk. The front heading south across england and wales is producing more cloud which will be enough here and therefore the odd spot of drizzle, the odd shower, rather like yesterday will stop a lot of the showers will be in the North And West of scotland, some getting to the east of scotland, Northern Ireland and the north of england as well. The cloud will break up attach allowing sunshine to develop. It will be breezy day and the strongest wins across the North And West. A warmer 23 in the south east. This evening and overnight, we will lose some of the showers but hang on to others in the north. Clear skies will develop and at The End of the night in you system are produced thicker cloud in the South West, the midlands and some parts of wales will stop all of us staying in double figures. Tomorrow we start off with the cloud, some of it getting into southern england. It will edge into the south of Northern Ireland. We are looking at your showers not as windy and feeling that bit better. In the south, temperatures could get a little bit higher in The Sunshine stop into sunday, two Weather Fronts affecting the weather, one across the far north of scotland bringing in rain. In between, although there will be areas of cloud, what we will find is it will break and we will see some sunshine. If it breaks for long enough, we could hit 23, 2a. Travelling north, temperatures will be comparatively lower stop. The warmer we will have to wait for the middle of next week. More details and more about The Sunflowers in half an hour. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with Naga Munchetty and charlie stayt. Lets return to our top story now and the news that six people, including a suspected gunman, have died in a shooting in a residential area of plymouth. We can speak now to the Defence Secretary, Ben Wallace. Good secretary, Ben Wallace. Morning. This is a truly shocking good morning. This is a truly shocking incident, the details at The Moment are unclear, we are awaiting to hear more from the Police but i wonder what your understanding is of What Happened in what sounds like a Cul De Sac in quite a quiet residential area of plymouth. Quite a quiet residential area of pl mouth. Quite a quiet residential area of pl mouth. , , plymouth. The thing i can say is that we have plymouth. The thing i can say is that we have ruled plymouth. The thing i can say is that we have ruled out plymouth. The thing i can say is| that we have ruled out terrorism plymouth. The thing i can say is. That we have ruled out terrorism as being behind this. I think it is very sad and tragic events, my thoughts are obviously with the families who have relatives and friends who have lost their lives, i think that is a tragic loss. I think we should wait for the Police to set out the details at some stage early this morning, i think they have a Gold Meeting as they call it early in the day, and i think we will then get to all understand more. I also think we should recognise the brave Police officers who clearly went into a Police of this went into a situation with an armed man and under their own threat took decisive action. It is awful, when i was Security Minister we increased funding to local Police so there were more armed officers and highly skilled officers, is0,000 uplift i think is the number in my memory serves me right. This was always going to happen in one sense, that logistics . This was always going to happen in one sense, that you i logistics . This was always going to i happen in one sense, that you would put in a force to cover the extraction of the three main groups of people in afghanistan. The first is Foreign Office and personnel from government to have been working in the embassy, we will draw down and relocate the embassy so we do not have to have so many people, that is about 500 people. Then all of the afghan interpreters and people we have an obligation to, we are trying to bring them back, we have brought back nearly 3000 so far, nearly 2000 since the announced exit, and we have got another 1800, 2000 to go. We will be bringing those people out. Most of the tasks going on at The Moment on the ground in afghanistan is processing those people and making sure we they have the documentation they need. The final group, that is theoretical size of 3000 because we do not know who will apply, they are called in title personnel, british passport holders, they could be security guards protecting aid agencies or other parts of the afghan states, and we have an obligation to bring them home as well. That is a big group we have to bring out, a lot of aeroplanes, but we are still in a position where we can use a civilian aircraft to bring them out. If the taliban recognise that they want people out of the Country, then interfering with that process will only extend the stay of the military rather than shorten it. We are on track to bring those people home towards The End of the month, early september. With; towards The End of the month, early setember. ~ ,. , towards The End of the month, early september september. Why did we go to afghanistan september. Why did we go to afghanistan in september. Why did we go to afghanistan in the september. Why did we go to afghanistan in the first i september. Why did we go to | afghanistan in the first place . September. Why did we go to i afghanistan in the first place . For two reasons. Afghanistan in the first place . Fr . Two reasons, one was, in 9 11, two reasons, one was, in 9 ii, alanda, it was hosted by a taliban government, launched the biggest single terrorist attack that the west had seen against the twin towers, lots of people killed in that alone, notjust towers, lots of people killed in that alone, not just american people. Alqaeda had become the pre eminent threat to the uk and the rest of the world by exporting Terrorism And Extremist views. So that part of the programme, which was to go there if you remember, a us led initiative which was to go there and root out alanda, to defeat that group, effectively remove the taliban from power because they had knowingly hosted and supported alanda. That was done quickly, that was done eventually successfully with ultimately the death of osama bin laden, and for 20 years, that part of the operation was successful. Alqaeda no longer exported Significant plots to the uk or anywhere else. Our streets were safer as a result of that weakening of alanda, they split and went elsewhere but they were much less effective having effectively lost their main base. That part was the success. We went there also hand in hand to build afghanistan to make sure they didnt come back, and that was 3 Million women who have been funded in education, we have trained 300,000 members of the armed forces, the international community. To put in £a billion as part of the economic development process. Britain put £a billion. You cannot take away education people, that investment helped but afghanistan was incredibly poor and still incredibly tribal. That has meant very big long term difficulties that we were prepared to manage but then we were prepared to manage but then we saw under Donald Trump, he made a deal with the taliban in doha, and when that deal was cast, we were left in the unenviable position of exiting the Country. Its left in the unenviable position of exiting the Country. Left in the unenviable position of exiting the Country. Its not a bad thin to exiting the Country. Its not a bad thing to remind exiting the Country. Its not a bad thing to remind people exiting the Country. Its not a bad thing to remind people to exiting the Country. Its not a bad thing to remind people to why i exiting the Country. Its not a bad J Thing to remind people to why we went in the first place. The logic of what you are saying would stand, surely, as we look at the situation now, which is, if afghanistan was seen as this place to comment terrorism, because if it was to foment terrorism because if it was left to its own devices, that is what will happen, surely the same is true now. Many people will be saying, even if the only part of the equation that we focus in on at The Moment is whether there is a real tangible risk that terrorists will thrive in the environment, and it will be exported around the world, may be to the streets of the uk, he must have real concerns over that. You must have real concerns over that. I do, afghanistan is tragically not the only failed state. We see Al Shabab in somalia getting stronger, we see in syria, isis continuing to be active. I always have a concern where there is always have a concern where there is a failed state or this type of environment, and obviously the taliban will grow this type of environment because of their actions. Their political office, as they called it, gave assurances, but they called it, gave assurances, but the military part of their operation seemed to show nothing like the sort. Thats why yourjournalists have been reporting pretty horrendous things happening on the ground. Yes, i have consent. We are not unable to deal with that concerns, yes, i have concerns. We are not unable to deal with those concerns, we can deal with it in international law, we can identify the individual host countries and if they dont take action you can take ranges of measures to disrupt individuals and those plots. That isnt the best way to deal with it, the best way to deal with it is not only to have a military solution but also the soft power, alongside it. The education. It is also the soft power, alongside it. The education. The education. It is, we have already had the education. It is, we have already had from the education. It is, we have already had from our the education. It is, we have already had from our correspondence, refugees, they are trying to flee immediate danger, families, women and children. That will lead to more refugees seeking safety elsewhere. Thatin refugees seeking safety elsewhere. That in turn presents huge logistical problems for trying to deal with the sheer numbers of people Coming In and in amongst that is the risk of people Coming In who have ill intent towards the uk. It is a perfect storm situation. When you say you have concerns, and to try to calibrate that. Is it inevitable that the withdrawal from the us, over which you have no control clearly, and the uk, from afghanistan, leads to a place which is going to make the world are much less safe place . Johnny mercer a few minutes ago, he was speaking to us and he has a deep personal interest in what is happening there, and he says its deeply humiliating to watch this withdrawal now. All the work that has gone in, as he knows only too well, so many lives lost, holding on to places like helmand province, our correspondence saying, afghan troops are retreating from those places. Johnny mercer says the reality is a lot more people will die because of this withdrawal. Im die because of this withdrawal. Im not auoin die because of this withdrawal. I rn not going to get into that kind of speculation. What i would say is, the history of afghanistan, britain found that out in the i830s, it was a Country led by warlords and different provinces and tribes, and if you end up, if you are not very careful, in a civil war. And i think we are heading towards a civil war. The taliban is not entirely a single entity, they break down underneath the title into all sorts of different interests. But fundamentally, as i said earlier, i have concern that when states become a failed state or warlike states as it is looking like in afghanistan, the Breeding Ground for both Poverty And Terrorism grows. Thats why security is the most important thing. One of our challenges, and i have been quite open about it, i felt the deal that Donald Trump did was a rotten deal. It didnt involve the afghan government, so it potentially undermined the government of the day. We as international partners found it uncomfortable because we had deployed through a us framework, not through a unilateral manner, so when they pulled the framer, we had to leave. And then there is the bigger question of the wests mindset, do we fly in, fix things and fly at, which doesnt seem to work . You can fly in militarily, take a strike, remove the person you want to remove and go back, and we will always maintain that capability. But you have to do the international community. Have to do the international community have to do the international community. Have to do the international communi. , ~ community. Can i ust clarify, mr wallace, community. Can ijust clarify, mr wallace, are you saying it is still| wallace, are you saying it is still a possibility that Uk Forces could be used in afghanistan in Air Strike situations for example . I thought that was being ruled out. H0. Situations for example . I thought that was being ruled out. Situations for example . I thought that was being ruled out. No, the Uk Forces could that was being ruled out. No, the Uk Forces could be that was being ruled out. No, the Uk Forces could be used that was being ruled out. No, the Uk Forces could be used globally. If. Forces could be used globally. If they will be used in afghanistan, is my question. They will be used in afghanistan, is my question my question. Afghanistan is obviously my question. Afghanistan is obviously a my question. Afghanistan is obviously a Country my question. Afghanistan is obviously a Country around | my question. Afghanistan is i obviously a Country around the world. The Uk Forces retain the capability to take action to defend their citizens were that may be if their citizens were that may be if the Host Nation doesnt do that. We have lots of ranges of disruption capabilities, kinetic and non kinetic, to disrupt terrorist plots. Everyday we deal with terrorist plots in Country, usually in partnership with the Country hosting them. In third countries. We have the right to defend our Country against imminent threat under international law. Our military is configured to deliver some of that capability which is why we have military and intelligence services for early morning is for those areas. Services for early morning is for those areas services for early morning is for those areas. ~. ,. , i. Those areas. Much appreciate your time, those areas. Much appreciate your time. I sir Andrew Strauss is one of englands most successful cricket captains, but after losing his wife to cancer in 2018, he set up a charity in her name and has been working to improve support for other bereaved families. Today, during the test between england and india, Lords Cricket Ground will turn red for ruth for a second time, to help raise awareness of the foundations work. We can speak to andrew now from lords. Good morning, resplendent in red obviously. This must mean so much, seeing this happen again. It obviously. This must mean so much, seeing this happen again. Seeing this happen again. It does, its obviously. Seeing this happen again. It does, its obviously, the seeing this happen again. It does, its obviously, the ruth seeing this happen again. It does, its obviously, the Ruth Strauss i seeing this happen again. It does, its obviously, the Ruth Strauss . I its obviously, the Ruth Strauss . Foundation moment in The Sun, not a lot of sun at The Moment. But to see the whole of Lords Turnaround for us and to have this opportunity to showcase what we do at the Ruth Strauss foundation, which is research into non Smoking Lung cancers and providing support for families facing the death of a parent. Ai,000 kids every year lose a parent and we believe that the right professional help can make that ordeal, that awful ordeal that i know too much about, just a little bit easier for those families. We are very passionate about it, its our mission and it is our opportunity to showcase the mission and raise some much needed funds. You have always been open with us about this, how are you, how children, how are you all doing . Its two and half years since Ruths Death now so we have got used to a new normal, a new life. It was very tough to begin with and it gets a little bit more, i suppose, normal over time. The boys are doing great. Never underestimate the kids and their ability to have resilience and to have courage and look on the bright side of life. But we miss ruth greatly. Days like this are emotional days because it is our way of reconnecting with ruth and hopefully make her proud and also to keep her spirit living on. An emotional day for us, but an amazing day as well and we are obviously so grateful to yourself and the Cricket World and everyone for giving us this platform to tell everyone what we are trying to do. Talk this platform to tell everyone what we are trying to do. We are trying to do. Talk to me about what we are trying to do. Talk to me about what we we are trying to do. Talk to me about what we are we are trying to do. Talk to me about what we are trying i we are trying to do. Talk to me about what we are trying to i we are trying to do. Talk to me| about what we are trying to do. We are trying to do. Talk to me i about what we are trying to do. I think its really interesting, particularly you spoke about the children and how you cope and resilience, that is quite a focus for you with this and helping children deal with bereavement. Yeah, its such a tough thing for parents. When you know a parent is going to die, they have a terminal diagnosis, our instinct as parent is to protect our children from it and not go there with them, almost. But the Research And Advice we have been given by experts is that the children have to be part of the journey with you. You have to have the very tough conversations. Amongst the parents, firstly themselves, then also with the children, because that makes the ordealjust children, because that makes the ordeal just slightly easier children, because that makes the ordealjust slightly easier and it helps the kids to go some way to resolve the grief. Unresolved grief over time it leads to really bad outcomes for both parents and children as well. The right sort of professional health before death can help you short cut some of those issues that you might experience after death, if you dont do that preparation work. We are passionate about it and we know it works, i know it works because ruth was courageous enough to make sure that we saw professional help before she died, and that has definitely made ourjourney much easier for the boys and myself. I ourjourney much easier for the boys and myself and myself. I have read the phrase, ruth wanted and myself. I have read the phrase, ruth wanted to and myself. I have read the phrase, ruth wanted to do and myself. I have read the phrase, ruth wanted to do death and myself. I have read the phrase, ruth wanted to do death well. I i ruth wanted to do death well. I imagine that part of that was making sure that memories and the way you speak about ruth is not done, you know, it will always be tinged with sadness, i imagine, i cant imagine it would be any other way but you celebrate the fact that you got someone and you had someone like Ruthin Someone and you had someone like ruth in your life and that is a very difficult thing to learn to accept to do. , ~ to do. Yeah, looks, i ust think that old english i to do. Yeah, looks, i ust think that old English Sort i to do. Yeah, looks, ijust think that old English Sort of to do. Yeah, looks, ijust think that old English Sort of stiff to do. Yeah, looks, ijust think. That old English Sort of stiff upper Lip Attitude to death, lets not talk about it, and pretend it never happened, thats so unhealthy. Ruth was brave enough to say to me, andy, we need to address this, its going to happen. The only way for me to feel comfortable and enjoy the rest of my time on this earth is to know that you and the boys are prepared. Its such an opportunity for me to talk about ruth today, remember her, and also for the boys to feel connected to her. Thats my obligation as a parent, make sure that it ruth is at the forefront of their minds. And the boys, and ruth, wherever she is, feel like we are doing something positive in her name, and that is my driving force. You are turning lords read. Im not quite sure what that means in terms of celebration for cricket, but do you think that is going to keep The Sunshine present and no interrupted play . There has been a lot of that in all forms of cricket lately. I think the forecast is ok today. It might be difficult batting conditions which intermediate because they desperately need wickets today. It should be another fantastic day of test cricket, it was brilliant yesterday, it really is a closely fought series and hopefully the red atmosphere can inspire england to have a really good day. I inspire england to have a really aood da. ~. , inspire england to have a really aood da. Two Boxing Gb Gold medallists. Its quite an extraordinary thing. Lots to talk about. Lets have a look at the weather. Good morning. I good morning. Lam in hertfordshire this morning, surrounded by beautiful sunflowers. Not much sun and the forecast. We have any showers which could be thundery in places, especially in the North West. Not as much as we would expect at this stage in august stopped low pressure is driving the weather, anchored to the North West of the Country. The Weather Fronts in the north are producing heavy and tangerine showers and in the sad it is producing a band of Cloud Stop and andrey showers, and in the south it is producing a band of cloud. We see the showers as well across Northern Ireland and later into Northern England. In between will be brightness driven along quickly on a brisk wind. South of that, the cloud this morning which will break in places allowing sunshine to develop. In The Sunshine we can see highs at 223, comparatively colder in the north of the Country. Up to 23. Still a brisk wind. Further south by The End of the night we will see a new Weather Front Coming In, introducing cloud in the South West, wales and the midlands. As a result it will not be cold. Tomorrow we start off with cloud in the south with rain Coming In. That rain eventually becoming confined to the central swathes of england and wales. Behind it the cloud will break up in the south east. Not as windy as wet as it will be today. Temperature wise, still 12, i3, windy as wet as it will be today. Temperature wise, still 12, 13, 1a in the north. If the cloud breaks for long enough and The Sun stays out for long enough we could see 23, 24. Thank you for your time. As weve been hearing this morning, the taliban is rapidly recapturing afghanistan territories, following the withdrawal of western troops. Lets Take A Look at the timeline of events. In february 2020, the us and the taliban Signed an agreement for bringing peace to afghanistan, after more than 18 years of conflict. President trump then agreed to remove all troops within14 months. In april this year, President Biden announced a new deadline for the withdrawal, that would coincide with the 20th anniversary of the 9 11 terror attacks. The us military left Bagram Airfield its key base in afghanistan injuly, effectively ending its military campaign there. President biden has since defended his decision. I think they are beginning to realise they have to come together politically at the top. We will continue to keep our commitment but i do not regret my decision. But, since then the taliban has moved with speed, seizing new territories and cities almost daily. So far theyve taken 12 in total, kandahar is the latest to fall, after Herat And Ghazni yesterday. Thousands of civilians have been displaced. Were joined now by our correspondent Yogita Limaye with the latest from kabul. This is obviously affecting so many people. I am going to be talking about the repatriating of nationals by the us and the uk in a moment. How are people coping on the ground . People are in Shock And Disbelief over What Has happened in a single day. Five provincial capitals have fallen to the taliban. Among the major cities, kandahar, the second largest city, a big economic enter. The taliban will be looking at this as a major victory. Herethat is close to the border with iran and good for trade. Yesterday we started the day talking about ghazni and thenit the day talking about ghazni and then it was five provincial capitals, including Lashkar Gah in the helmand province. That is where thousands of afghan soldiers were killed. Now it has been taken over by the taliban and afghan forces have retreated to a military base outside The City. People really in a sense of shock about What Has happened. Silence from the leadership of this Country. We have not heard yet from the president or any top ministers about developments yesterday. The longer that continues, the more there will be Speculation And Rumour about what could potentially happen in kabul. We were talking about the us and uk sending in troops to repatriate nationals. That news has added in a sensitive panic among citizens in this Country. I have also seen messages of anger among some afghans saying sending in troops to evacuate their citizens, they are leaving us like this. We have seen that angle yesterday. It is over the last few months with people feeling international troops leaving irresponsibly. Lets speak to tom tugendhat, chair of the foreign affairs select committee. Im going to come to how you feel about the move in terms of the uk withdrawing from afghanistan in a moment. Our correspondent in kabul were saying that people are feeling as if they are perhaps being abandoned as nationals are being repatriated all brought back home. It was inevitable this would happen The Moment the uk said, we are hands off now. A collection of international soldiers made workers, diplomats trying to do their best for the Country. It was really difficult at the beginning, really difficult. Over the last ten, 15, 20 years, we got to a position where five years ago made to stop being involved in the fighting. You have not reported on any death a british soldier in about eight, years. There are americans had not reported on deaths of american soldiers for two years. There are reasons for that. The afghans have stepped up. They have stepped up and they have done it and now we have pulled the rug from under them. Now we have pulled the rug from underthem. It now we have pulled the rug from under them. It is like training a Cycling Team at Manchester Velodrome on the best cycles, the best kit, and they are winning and they get to tokyo and they have tricycle. How long will| the uk and us support be needed in the uk and us support he needed in orderfor the afghan the uk and us support he needed in order for the afghan military Police to be able to manage security in afghanistan without external help . It may have been years. Lets look at what those years would have that they would not cost a0 billion we have already spent. That money has gone and it is not coming back. There is nothing we can do to bring back the a50 british soldiers who died in action of the american soldiers who died in action. Supporting afghan soldiers is a good ratio, pretty cheap when you think of it. We pulled out of germany in 1991 when we won the cold war because insurance matters, staying matters stop being an ally matters. By matters stop being an ally matters. By withdrawing, how is this almost come full circle to 20 years ago in terms of taliban influence and in terms of taliban influence and in terms of taliban influence and in terms of the afghan people and what control if any they have over their lives . We are about to get to the point, i do not know where you were on 9 11 but i remember. It now looks like 20 years later, 9 11 will be the anniversary of the taliban taking complete control of the whole of afghanistan and that is because we had undermined civil institutions and left the place we care. This is really bad for britain. It is not just about afghanistan. If you want to be able to travel the world safely and embassies to mean something and conscious staff protecting you, you need to look like a serious player. Making yourself look like you are untrustworthy, weakens britain abroad and leaves us all exposed. When you talk about 9 11 in 2001 and we talk about the links with afghanistan, taliban, alanda, how we talk about the uk withdrawing and the us withdrawing and the chaos perhaps is too strong a word, what is the direct impact . When people are watching and listening to you, should they be concerned about the impact . I am talking in terms of Terror And Terror Cell Growth globally, not directly at the uk but globally. The taliban has never been a single organisation, it is many different organisations who band together every now and again and quite often fight Each Other. The idea they rejected the Death Cult they claim to follow in favour of a liberal democracy is absolute rubbish. Of course they havent. Of course what we are likely to see is the same Trouble Bristol in syria, similar overflow into other parts of the region possibly terrorism in western china where already there is already a massively oppressed muslim minority. School and churches in the local area are opening this morning to support the community. We can speak now to the bishop of plymouth, nick mckinnel. Good morning to you. First of all, its very obvious that The City of plymouth has had a major shock, this is a devastating incident and mercifully very rare in the uk. What are your thoughts this morning . are your thoughts this morning . I walked through the cordoned area this morning, it is obviously very quiet but last night there was confusion, a little bit of panic, really, people were shocked, and the tragedies were unfolding. The Emergency Services were clearly brilliant in the way that they responded, but were left with a legacy of grief and trauma, as well as just great anxiety. fine Legacy of grief and trauma, as well as just great anxiety. I think thats right. I think to be quiet and allowed time to think about What Has happened and reflect and remember those who are bereaved, before everything rushes on and people try and find reasons and explanations. I thinkjust time to grieve is important, time to be quiet, and people like to do that before god, before one another, and that seems to me a very important part of the process. As i say, there will be lots of help available, but this is going to affect peoples lives, some people forever. Its a deeply traumatic event, and people who have witnessed terrible things, people who have lost loved ones, people who have lost loved ones, people who have lost loved ones, people who are neighbours, will be deeply affected for years to come. Mandibles like saws, they cut, rip and slice, rather than pierce. Im doctor tim cockerill, and im an etomologist.
