In becoming britains most decorated olympian, Jason Kenny has surpassed his Friend Sir Chris hoys medal haul. Sir Chris Hoy has been speaking to Nesta Mcgregor about the achievement. Laura and a bit of a nightmare in the first race at the omni with a crash that wasnt her fault and then a small mistake in the Elimination Race and she was out of the running for the Points Race at The End. She was disappointed about that end we were expecting more and she was expecting more but i think it was made by the truly spectacular performance from Jason Kenny. Absolutely incredible. I had never seen a Keirin Final like it at any level before, particularly at World Level for somebody like jason to be able to just launch off the front of the bunch and have no reaction from the rest of the guys we were standing open whilst watching the reaction and he just destroyed them and became britains most successful olympian ever in the process. Similar restrictions on the media and on the athletes as well, cooped up in their rooms at times, having to do daily testing, difficulties in training for some of them as well. I mean, theres constant concern about the pandemic and then we saw these rising cove eats numbers every day that we were reporting on. At one time, they ballooned to around 5000 cases a day and it felt at felt at times that that might overshadow these games but the stories of inspiration came thick and fast. Every day it felt like there was a story that would bring people to tears in the sport really worked its magic and for the host nation, japan, theyve had this incredible record haul, 27 goals, far better than they were expecting in many respects. They got a Brother And Sister who both won medals in thejudo, Young Dynamic the judo, Young Dynamic Skateboarders thejudo, Young Dynamic Skateboarders who were only 12 and 19 when they stood on that olympic podium. They won the baseball the other night which is an absolute passion for manyjapanese. On the Sporting Field that was all the success so you started to feel the tide, sort of, turning here and the change as people started really enjoying the Sporting Action, so, like manyjapanese, i have also felt a bit conflicted that, yes, this has been happening and it is the pandemic with a huge amount of concern about the Health Care System and whether or not it would hold up but also these incredible moments that weve seen in the sporting arena. ,. , that weve seen in the sporting arena. ,. ,. , arena. Other athletes, i think, really missed having family and friends. In fact, Simone Biles spoke about that when she talks about her mental health, how tough it was to not have her family there with her but, of course, all the athletes came out to support each other and if we take Simone Biles again she was there every day supporting her Team Mates even though she was actually competing and we saw that time and time again, they were trying to fill out the stands, they had their flags, they were cheering on their Team Mates at all of these events but, yes, it was poignant, i think is a word to use, and i dont know how much of the Closing Ceremony you saw but i felt that very much tonight, that there were these athletes parading round to an stadium and some of the smaller countries had already sent all their athletes home because, remember, after youve competed you have 48 hours before you have to return. They had had volunteers carrying their countries flags which felt a little bit sad as well and then be recreated inside the olympic Stadium Tonight scenes of tokyo, so we saw a park scene, bmx riders, a dj and what they were trying to do was give the athletes a sense of what this incredibly vibrant, creative Amazing city is all about because they havent been able to see it theyve only been in the Olympic Village or at their venues and they wanted to give them a little taste of that at the Closing Ceremony so moments like that for me actually felt a little bit poignant. Yes, very much so, but at least the world has been watching. Thank you so much, lucy in tokyo. The Taliban In Afghanistan say they have captured the northern cities of Kunduz And Sar e pol, as they continue to make sweeping territorial gains. A spokesman for the group said theirfighters had taken most government buildings in kunduz, but a Defence Ministry Official said Special Forces were still inside the city battling the insurgents. If the miltants can hold kunduz, considered a gateway to Central Asia, it will be a big setback for the government. A local official in Sar E Pul said most Government Officials had moved to an Army Base outside the city. Our south asia editor, anbarasan ethirajan, is following developments in afghanistan and told us there were conflicting reports from kunduz. This morning, the taliban spokesperson messaged me saying that they had taken control of all the major government buildings and the forces have been driven out of the city and they were in the year in Army Base, all being held up there, but this afternoon a Defence Ministry Spokesperson tweeted a video saying that Special Forces have launched a special operation to retake the city. You know this is a northern city which is very, very important, a Trading Hub and also a gateway to Central Asia and this will be the biggest city they have taken so far if they can hold onto this city and they are also launching simultaneous attacks on other northern cities like Sar E Pul and also others so the ground is changing very fast and also shows how the Afghan Army has been stretched and they feel that they dont have enough support after the us forces withdrew suddenly, you know, three months ago they started to withdraw and the government says almost 95 and other soldiers above the left.
