Greece is in the grip of an emergency. Wildfires have been blazing Out Of Control for days. Extreme heat means these forests near athens are like a tinderbox. Helicopters must keep returning here to try and put out the fire but it is not working yet. This is the main North South Motorway near athens but it has been closed for two days because of all the fires around here and these strong scorching winds are not helping. The afghan government says American B52 bombers have killed more than 200 taliban fighters in a series of Air Strikes in the city of sheberghan, where the insurgents claim to have taken control. Shebhergan is the stronghold of former afghan Vice President abdul rashid dostum, whose supporters fight against the taliban. It comes after the militants said theyd captured zaranj in nimroz, close to the border with iran, in a major escalation of their offensive. Theyve made sweeping gains since foreign forces started Withdrawing from the country. The us and the uk have asked their citizens in afghanistan to leave the country immediately because of the worsening security situation. Richard galpin reports. In this fast moving offensive the taliban are claiming a second province is in their hands. Here video film for the fighters appears to show them releasing inmates from the local prison. The afghan authorities admit some parts of the city have been taken. In response, the afghan Defence Ministry says it has called in American B 52 long range bombers to try to halt the taliban offensive. Air strikes, it claims, have already hit the insurgents killing of them. There is a risk, though, of civilian casualties. Already many civilians have been killed or injured including children. The hospitals filling up. I taliban have been specifically targeting Government Officials such as the head of the governments information centre. He was shot dead on friday. His funeral has now taken place in the capital, kabul. A killing designed to intimidate those working for the government in kabul. As the situation deteriorates, many afghans outside of the country in pakistan are now trying to get back in. But one of the key Border Crossings has been closed by the taliban leaving many stranded. Translation we came here to attend a funeral three days ago, now the border is closed, we are sitting here with no food and no money, we cannot go to a hotel to sleep for the night. I appeal to the taliban leaders to find some solution for us. And now while afghans are trying to get back home, the british and american governments are calling on their citizens to leave the country. Lets get some of the days other news more than a quarter of A Million people have taken to the streets of cities across france, to protest against a new covid health pass. A ship carrying more than 250 migrants has docked in sicily, a week after those on board, were rescued off the tunisian coast. Passengers on the vessel, run by the german Aid Agency Sea watch international, clapped and cheered as they arrived at the Italian Port of trapani. Italy has urged other European Union countries to accept some of the new arrivals. Senators in the united states are meeting for the second weekend in a row in an attempt to pass a trillion dollar infrastructure bill. The bipartisan legislation has cleared another procedural hurdle, as it edges towards a final vote. The Majority Leader in the chamber, chuck schumer, said the senate would remain in session until the process was completed. Saudi arabia will begin accepting vaccinated foreign visitors to the islamic Holy City of mecca as part of the umrah pilgrimage. It comes a year and a half after the kingdom closed its borders because of the coronavirus pandemic. Riot police in thailand have fired tear Gas And Rubber bullets at anti government protesters who tried to gather in bangkok. The demonstrators are calling for political reforms and changes to the monarchy. Theyre also angry at the thai governments handling of coronavirus. Our correspondent, jonathan head, sent this report. These protests are not yet on the scale of last years mass rallies. But they are no less determined. Pushing once again for the government to resign and for the lavish funds spent on the Military Monarchy to be diverted instead to fighting the covid pandemic. The police walled off the prime ministers home and much of bangkoks royal quarter. They push the protesters back with volleys of tear gas. A now familiar confrontation we are seeing each weekend despite the Governments Declaration that such gatherings are strictly forbidden. The grievances that fired up Thailands Youth last year have not gone away. If anything, the governments botched Vaccine Rollout combined with the rapid spread of the Delta Variant overwhelming hospitals and morgues in a country that largely contained the virus last year, has sparked even wider public anger. The prime minister, who seized power seven years ago in a coup, is seen by many as out of touch and authoritarian. His is one of several governments in this region whose already shaky legitimacy is being tested by covid. Yet, with infection still rising and much of thailand in lockdown, only a few people are prepared to take the risk ofjoining these demonstrations. For now, they remain small and unless they pick up momentum, little threat to the thai government. Jonathan head, bangkok. While the Party Atmosphere gripped the streets. Woo . Some marched with these flags in hand, representing countries where homosexuality is still against the law. In 2001, the netherlands became the first country in the world to legalise same sex marriage, but according to a report by human rights watch, there were over 1500 anti lgbt incidents in the country in 2017. A 66 increase compared to a decade ago. Ernest verhoeven helped organised amsterdams first pride parade. He says there has been a lack of tolerance towards Lg Bt people from some immigrants coming from countries where homosexuality is illegal. The city became more colourful and diverse, which is great, but the city became also in parts, more conservative, and aggressive towards differences, and we are now in a situation that there is quite a bit of violence instigated against us by youngsters with a migration background, and on the other hand, we have politicians on the left wing and liberal politicians who dont know how to tackle the problem, because they are also afraid to discriminate. So i hope that we invest in each other, in solidarity, and that in the coming five years, we make a safe space of amsterdam again, a gay paradise. Its the second consecutive year the Citys Canal Parade was cancelled due to coronavirus, but despite covid, young and old, the message on the street is still the same, equal rights for all. Our Sports Presenter Sarah is in tokyo. Jason kenney has become a record breaking british olympian . He become a recordbreaking british olympian . He absolutely has come within british olympian . He absolutely has come within the british olympian . He absolutely has come within the last british olympian . He absolutely has come within the last hour. Has come within the last Hour Orso has come within the last hour or so he has become the most successful british olympian by winning seven Gold Medals, this after he won the Gold Medal in the mens, defending the title he won in rio five years ago. And when he did it it was in some style, quite an interesting race. Unusually he was able to search clear and break away from the rest of the athletes in that velodrome on the track and able to go for home with three laps to go and nobody was able to catch him, so huge delight forjason kenney, breaking that record. He had earlier in the olympics one Silver Medal in the team sprint, and he didnt quite know where he would be in this event and he certainly looked and proved he was right up there at the top. His wife laura was also bidding to become the most successful female olympian from great britain and she was going on the womens omnium, it didnt quite go her way, there was a crash in one of the earlier events where she was taken down and also she exited early in the Elimination Race so it was the Elimination Race so it was the usasjennifer who won that one and a Gold Medalfor canada, with Kelsey Mitchell winning gold in the womens sprinter. I can also tell you there has been another record for the usa because they womens Basketball Team have beenin womens Basketball Team have been in japan womens Basketball Team have been injapan in the Gold Medal match and that now is the usas seventh consecutive Gold Medal in the basketball. They are phenomenal in that, such a dominant force. The action is just wrapping up really, edging towards the closing stages in the sport here this sunday in tokyo because we know the Closing Ceremony is at eight oclock local time injapan, so lets head into the City Of Tokyo and joined our reporter, who is there for us. I wonder, now that we are at the final stages, close to the Closing Ceremony, what sense do you get to where the japanese public feel about these olympic games . The opinions have been somewhat split the opinions have been somewhat split. Before the game started, we saw split. Before the game started, we saw some excitement when the japanese we saw some excitement when the japanese athlete started winning a lot more medals than they winning a lot more medals than they expected, but still, a lot of concerns about the Surgeon Covid19 of concerns about the Surgeon Covid 19 cases. I have been watching covid 19 cases. I have been watching a lot of postmatch interviews with japanese athletes, and ijust want to win, athletes, and ijust want to win, but athletes, and ijust want to win, but everyone in there, in their win, but everyone in there, in theiranswers, win, but everyone in there, in their answers, they really reflected the enormous pressure those reflected the enormous pressure those athletes must have been under, those athletes must have been under, notjust to perform and win, under, notjust to perform and win, but under, notjust to perform and win, but also because of this very win, but also because of this very strong anti olympic sentiment. Before the games, some sentiment. Before the games, some of sentiment. Before the games, some of them were asked to Withdraw some of them were asked to Withdraw from the games or boycott Withdraw from the games or boycott the olympics, and i remember one Rugby Player telling remember one Rugby Player telling me on twitter she wanted telling me on twitter she wanted the games to go ahead but could not say so publicly because but could not say so publicly because she knew it was an athletes because she knew it was an athletes ego, so it was nice to see athletes ego, so it was nice to see some excitement from the japanese to see some excitement from the japanese public when we started seeing japanese public when we started seeing those Gold Rush of the. As seeing those Gold Rush of the gasjapanese athletes, but now that we gasjapanese athletes, but now that we are seeing this urge in covid19 that we are seeing this urge in covid 19 cases, there are concerns, covid 19 cases, there are concerns, especially about the paralympics, that tokyo will host paralympics, that tokyo will host in paralympics, that tokyo will host in about two weeks. In Terms Host in about two weeks. Terms of host in about two weeks. In terms of the legacy, and i suppose the financial cost of these games, and having nothing really to counteract that, with no crowds and that, what do you think the impact of the games being here will leave onjapan . I think we will have to see how the economy will go after the games, the economy will go after the games, because the japanese government spent an enormous Amount Government spent an enormous amount of government spent an enormous amount of money to host these games, amount of money to host these games, and the official number is about games, and the official number is about 15 Billion but experts say that the government would experts say that the government would have spent up to 25 billion, would have spent up to 25 billion, and of course, as you said. Billion, and of course, as you said. They billion, and of course, as you said, they will not see much financial said, they will not see much financial benefit from that. Also financial benefit from that. Also in financial benefit from that. Also in terms of the legacy, it realty also in terms of the legacy, it really depends on how the government can control this pandemic, we continue to see these pandemic, we continue to see these record numbers, clearly these record numbers, clearly the state these record numbers, clearly the State Of Emergency is not working. The State Of Emergency is not working, but of course the japanese government doesnt really japanese government doesnt really have the power to impose a strict really have the power to impose a strict lockdown, but the government has now been asking People Government has now been asking people with mild covid 19 symptoms to stay at home instead symptoms to stay at home instead of overwhelmingly hospitals, which has not been going hospitals, which has not been going down too well with the public going down too well with the public. It depends with what happens with the pandemic, as to what happens with the pandemic, as to what the legacy of the games will be to what the legacy of the games will be as to what the legacy of the games will be as well. Will be as well. Thank you very much, will be as well. Thank you very much. Our will be as well. Thank you very much, our reporter will be as well. Thank you very much, our reporter there will be as well. Thank you very much, our reporter there in i much, our reporter there in Central Tokyo for us, the Closing Ceremony for the olympic games a little bit later, and i doubt it will be weeks and months down the line that when we see the full impact of these olympic games Here In Tokyo and japan. Tline impact of these olympic games Here In Tokyo and japan. One of the notable Here In Tokyo and japan. One of the notable things Here In Tokyo and japan. One of the notable things about Here In Tokyo and japan. One of the notable things about these l the notable things about these games was coronavirus, the complete lack of crowds in the stadiums and at these events. How does that seem to have impacted on the motivation of the athletes . It impacted on the motivation of the athletes . The athletes . It has been so interesting the athletes . It has been so interesting watching the athletes . It has been so | interesting watching athletes over the last year and a half adjust to this new reality for adjust to this new reality for a lot of them, be It Training in different ways in terms of getting access to what they usually would have and then when they come to compete, competing in front of empty stadiums, and how they find their motivation in order to put out the best performances that they can, and loads of athletes that we know thrive on that, remember usain bolt, and he loves having the crowd around him and if you wonder if he was here, how he would have felt in those empty stadiums because it is really stark, the olympics, the biggest stage every four years and the athletes worked their whole lives without, and to get the adulation that goes along with it, i know of the athletes are very grateful they have been able to be here, the circumstances, that they have taken place in, that they have been thankful and grateful, to the Tokyo Public for allowing them to be here, and are supporting them in that way, and one notable point has been that its quite sad, when you are around, you seejapanese locals who are, were expecting a very exciting games that they could be part of, when you see the pictures of them outside the pictures of them outside the stadiums, trying to get a look in, and they are not allowed in because of the restrictions, and that does give you a general sense of sadness as to how these games would have been and what they really took place like, but i think most of the athletes have tried to make the best of it for themselves. We tried to make the best of it for themselves. Tried to make the best of it for themselves. We have seen lots of young for themselves. We have seen lots of young athletes, for themselves. We have seen lots of young athletes, new i lots of young athletes, new sports introduced, what you think the sporting of these games is . I think the sporting of these games is . Think the sporting of these games is . Think the sporting of these names is . ~. ,. , ~ games is . I think when we look back at these games is . I think when we look back at these olympic games is . I think when we look back at these olympic games, | games is . I think when we look i back at these olympic games, we will probably think about the fact that the athletes were more open and more honest and came across as more human, and they did that because they felt empowered to be able to speak out in their postmatch or postevent interviews, about the pressures they have failed over the last year and a half, trying to build up to a very different games, you know, the pressure they feel in general coming in if they are favourites or not, and they have this moment once every four years to perform at the very best, and what that takes to get to this level, and we have seen with numerous athletes coming out and speaking about the Mental Health issues that they have been having, notably with simone bales, and i think the big legacy will be of these games, of sport opening up the conversation, talking about mental well being, the pressures on athletes, and how we look after athletes notjust physically, but mentally, and its notjust the big names, the big names have spoken out here but maybe that will open up here but maybe that will open up the pathway for those down the Pecking Order as such to be able to raise those concerns if they are going through that, so definitely these games may well be remembered for that. Staying with the olympics and earlier i spoke to hannah roberts, who won Silverfor Team Usa in the womens bmx freestyle event in tokyo. It was a bit crazy. The whole fact that the olympics happened, and being there was a surreal experience, and obviously you have to get used to it pretty fast because you were in, and it wasjust amazing to be able to go and be with my friends and just feel normal again after the year and a half of the World Kind of shutting down. How did you celebrate when you were out in tokyo winning your silver . Were you able to celebrate . Yeah, im 19, so either way, i celebrated, theres nothing i can do, but ijust hung out with my friends, and i ate a lot of sweets afterwards, and i wasjust excited, i talked to all my family and i was super excited to come home so i could show them the medal, and show them videos that i wasnt able to post while i was there. Obviously your friends and Family Wont have been able to join you out in tokyo. But what was the reception like when you got back to North Carolina . Most of my family lives in michigan, im hoping to drive there soon, but Coming Home to my life was the best thing. I wasnt gone for that long. Coming home and being super happy with how i rode, super stoked to take the silver, so just Coming Home was an amazing moment, and it was relief, because now i dont have anything to stress about, and i get to kind of sit at home and enjoyjust My Downtime now. You started Bmx Riding when you were nine years old. These olympics have huge audiences around the world, what would your advice to be two young Boys And Girls who watched you, who were inspired by you and want to get into Bmx Riding . Definitely try it. You can build such a Support System in the sport itself, and even if it is not for you, there are people, you meet lifelong friends throughout the sport. Much more on all those stories on the Bbc News website and the Bbc News app. You can reach me on twitter, i met richard preston. For the time being, for me and the team, thanks for watching. Goodbye for now. Hello there. Low pressure brought a very unsettled day on saturday. We saw lots of showers around, some torrential downpours in places, but there was some good spells of sunshine, too. And sunday is a Repeat Performance some of the showers will be heavy and thundery once again and slow moving across the north of the uk. Thats because in the centre of the low, the winds will be lighter but Youll Notice across its southern flank for Southern England through wales, quite a squeeze in the isobars there. So, its going to be breezy. So, well start off with maybe some sunshine across eastern areas but the showers will get going. Theyll rattle through fairly quickly across southern areas because of the Breeze But Theyll hang around across the northern half of the country slow moving torrential downpours, an area of more persistent rainjust pushing to the far North East of Scotland And Orkney there. So the wind is lighter Youll Notice these are the mean wind speeds. Further south though, it will be blustering gusts higher than this particularly around coasts and over hills. So in the sunshine, we could see temperatures reach around 21 celsius. Otherwise, like the last few days, most places will be the mid to high teens, and itll feel particularly cool when the showers come along. Now through sunday night, the showers continue across northern areas, turn drier for a while for england and wales but well see this Feature Run across the south bringing some wet weather for South Wales and Southern England through the night. Again, itll remain fairly breezy in the south, lighter winds in the north. Overnight temperatures 11 14 celsius. So into monday, then, were starting the new week off with this area of low pressure but its going to continue to weaken. Fewer isobars on the chart, so the winds will turn a bit lighter. Well start off quite wet across the south east. That Feature Clearing away. And youll see quite a bit of sunshine around and i think general thinking is for monday, there will be fewer showers around but still dotted around, there will be some torrential downpours in places. Top temperatures, again, 20 21 celsius. Closer to 17 19 for most. That area of low pressure eventually moves away as we head on into tuesday and a ridge of High Pressure builds in across the country from tuesday onwards. This area of low pressure will continue to affect more Western Parts of the country but i think High Pressure will try and dominate for much of the south and the east through the course of the week. So, temperatures will respond. Well see southerly winds, more sunshine. It will turn much warmer. There will always be the chance of some showers further north and west closer to that area of low pressure. This is Bbc News, the headlines thousands of residents and tourists have been evacuated from Towns North of athens, as wildfires spread across greece.
