Embassy in tokyo has now left japan, heading to warsaw after a stopover in vienna. Wildfires fuelled by high temperatures and strong winds continue to sweep parts of turkey, with eight people dead and thousands forced to leave their homes. Borisjohnson is expected to visit Renewable Energy projects and meet Police Officers on a two Day Visit to scotland. But hes not meeting Nicola Sturgeon, which she says she would have welcomed. And at 2 30, your questions answered. Well be putting your questions on vaccinations for teenagers to the experts. More than A Million teenagers could soon be offered a covid vaccine. Its understood that this afternoon, Thejoint Committee on vaccination and immunisation will recommend that 16 and 17 year olds are given the jab. At the moment, only Under 18s with underlying Health Conditions or living with someone vulnerable, qualify for the vaccine. Heresjim reed. 46 Million adults have already received a covid vaccine. Now the jab is set to be routinely offered to Under 18s for the first time. Scientists on thejcvi are expected to recommend that all 16 and 17 year olds should be next in line. Throughout the pandemic we have listened to thejcvi, and we have adopted their recommendations because they are the experts, so all i can say at this stage, i am afraid, is that it is imminent and people will get clarity very soon. Olly is one of a small number of 17 year olds who have already been jabbed. He has been volunteering in Bolton A E through the pandemic, so qualified as a Health Care worker. 16, 17 year olds have had such a Big Social Life and quite a lot of us have been going out quite a lot, and you know, theres a lot people as well who arent wearing masks at the moment, so i think it is really important to be jabbed because it reduces transmission, and also if you Get Covid you dont know how bad youre going to have it. Some people are more affected or less affected than others, and you wouldnt want to be one of the ones who is really badly affected. But this Decision Wasnt straight forward. The statistics show Under 18s are far less likely to get seriously sick with covid, and while Side Effects such as inflamed Heart Tissue are very rare, they do exist. I think its the right thing to start extending vaccination down into older teenagers. We know that they have a very high rate of infection, and if you look at where the infection is currently flourishing within society, its largely in those younger Age Groups. I mean, there is a balance, obviously, between the potential Side Effects and the damage that covid can do. Other countries, including the us and france, have gone further, and already offerjabs to all children over 12. A similar move in this country looks unlikely for the moment. The recommendation to extend the Jab Roll out to those 16 and 17 year olds will need to be signed off by ministers in all four nations of the uk. After that happens, we could see appointments offered in just two weeks time. Jim reed, bbc news. Therell be a downing Street Briefing at 3. 30 where were expecting an announcement on vaccines for 16 and 17 year olds. Well bring you that live. The Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England Professorjonathan Van Tam Will Bejoined by Professor Wei Shen Lim from Thejoint Committee for vaccinations and immunisation, and Drjune Raine from the medicines and healthcare products regulatory agency. Stay with us for that. We will bring you that live on bbc news. And if youve got any questions about vaccines for Under 18s, the Roll Out, and how it might work, wed love to hear from you. At 2. 30 well put them to our health correspondentjim reed. Any questions about teenagers having the vaccine, how the Roll Out will operate. You can get in touch on twitter using the Hashtag Bbcyourquestions and you can email us on yourquestions bbc. Co. Uk. That is coming up after 2. 30. New figures from the Office For National Statistics, show more than 9 in 10 adults in the uk, now have antibodies against coronavirus. Roughly 93 of adults tested by the ons during the week to the 18th Ofjuly, had covid antibodies, up slightly from 92 the previous fortnight. Antibodies are evidence of a past infection with covid, or of having received at least one dose of vaccine. New research suggests most children who become ill with covid, recover within a week, and long Term Symptoms are rare. Scientists from Kings College london say theyre reassured, that the number of young people who experience prolonged illness, is low. Heres our health correspondent, anna collinson. A joker and a daredevil. Thats how arlos mum describes him. But a few weeks ago, he became poorly after Testing Positive for coronavirus. There was definitely a point where, you know, i did wonder how this might continue in terms of symptoms, with its kind of get increasingly worse . Theres definitely an element of the unknown, which is slightly unsettling as a parent. Is that high enough . No, i want higher. But within a week, Arlos Cough and runny nose was gone and he was back to his normal self. New research suggests that recovery time is typical for most children, with few experiencing long Term Symptoms. The study looked at more than 1700 children who were reported to have developed symptoms and had tested positive for covid 19. It found fewer than one in 20 experienced symptoms forfour weeks or more, and just one in 50 had symptoms for more than eight weeks. The most common issues were headaches and tiredness. Can children have prolonged illness after covid 19 . Yes, they can, but it is not common and most of these children get better with time. Children can have prolonged symptoms from other illnesses as well, and an important Take Home Message is we need to be looking after all children who have protracted illness duration. Scientists hope their findings will reassure families whilst also validating those who have experienced prolonged illness like valentinas two children. She runs a Long Covid Support Group and thinks their continuous cough for three months could be a long Term Symptom following the infection. We havent been seen at that time by specialists, to identify this is covid 19 related, so we cant really define whether they had Long Covid, but based On My Own experiences and families that i have contact with, it is very much likely that they had it. Specialist centres have been set up to help those living with the long term effects of the virus. Anyone concerned about a child is advised to contact their gp. Much more covid news coming up after Half Past. Now lets turn to the olympics. Team gb are racking up the medals in tokyo at the olympics, and the success is across a wide range of sports. Ben meher has secured individual Showjumping Gold on his horse, explosion w. History was made in the Skate Park with Skye Brown whos just 13, taking britains first skateboarding medal, and securing her place as the countrys youngest ever Olympic Medallist. And there was a gold in sailing for Hannah Mills and mcintyre, winning the 4 70 class, making mills the most successful female olympic sailor of all time after her gold in rio, and a silver at london 2012. There were two more boxing medals, with Ben Whittaker taking silver in the Light Heavyweight Category And Fraser clarke claiming bronze in the mens Super Heavyweight division. But theres also disappointing news this afternoon, as the reigning World Champion, Katarina Johnson Thompson is out of the heptathlon after a Calf Injury in the 200 Metres. With a full round up of all the action, Natalie Pirks reports from tokyo. Sky brown will take bronze. Shes already lived her young life in the spotlight. At 13 years of age. But for the girl born injapan, draped in the british flag, this was the best feeling in the world. So much hype, but the talk is over. Thejudges were looking for difficult tricks, quality and consistency. Sky brown has a giant trick bag. Strap yourselves in, here we go. All she needed was a smooth run. Going for that kickflip indy. We knew it was going to come out. Not ideal. But with three runs allowed there was still hope. She let it go again missing the kickflip indy. The pressure is on that third and final run now. Time for a pep talk. In the searing heat of the ariake Skate Park, One British teenager shook off the nerves and kept her cool. Theres the kickflip indy. Thats what we needed. Theres the kickflip fakie. Hands in the air. Third times the charm. Team gb had everything crossed. Only the World Champion could deny her a medal. The bronze was in the Bag And History was made. As the tears flowed, the camaraderie was clear, friends and teenage girls living out a dream. Its so cool because i got to be on the podium with my friends, kokona and sakura, and being in tokyo and eating my favourite food, spending time in the village, this is honestly one of my best memories. Sky says she simply wanted to come here, Have Fun and inspire girls around the world. Britains youngest ever medallist did all of that and so much more. She was born injapan to Mum Mieko and british father, stu. At the age of ten, british skateboarding spotted her talent and saw an opportunity. We said if you want to give it a go, were skateboard gb, we dont have much resources or capacity, but we would be absolutely honoured to help you in that journey in any way we can. Who knew that she would be an olympian and a Bronze Medallist . Daddy, look at this when i filmed with her in la in 2019 she had her Head And Heart firmly set on her olympic dream. But it almost didnt happen when last year she fell 15 feet while her dad was filming. She was airlifted to hospital with Skull Fractures and broken bones, with doctors saying her helmet saved her life. Every time she goes in the air i flinch and i Cant Watch, my wife Cant Watch. You are an amazing skater and olympics doesnt define you. And the fact youre going for it is what skateboarding is about. It is not about holding back, it is about going for it, that is what she is about. She went for it and got it. Her aim is now to qualify for paris in three years time in both skateboarding and surfing. Dont believe her . Just watch. Lets get a full round up from the Bbc Sport centre, heres jane dougal. Gallon has been watching. You get to watch it for a living. Im not at all envious. It is the dream job, you come in and youre literally watching incredible olympics all day. Youre literally watching incredible olympics all day olympics all day. Thanks for that you aet olympics all day. Thanks for that you get up olympics all day. Thanks for that you get up in olympics all day. Thanks for that you get up in the olympics all day. Thanks for that you get up in the morning, olympics all day. Thanks for that you get up in the morning, it olympics all day. Thanks for that you get up in the morning, it is l olympics all day. Thanks for that i you get up in the morning, it is on, you finish an evening and youre wrapping it up. With Sky Brown, what a bronze for her. So good to see her back up and making a good go of that event. Such a fantastic event to see at the olympics, skateboarding. A whole new audience. Hannah mills, gold in her Sailing Class, with Eilidh Mcintyre. Brad ross having the track as well. Sailing to glory, and jumping forjoy. A golden day for Hannah Mills and Eilidh Mcintyre. And for mills, it was also an historic one. They had begun their final race with a title in their sights. All they had to do was finish the top seven and they were soon up into second place. By the final buoy, they had dropped back to fifth, but they held their nerve, and held on for victory. Hannah mills and Eilidh Mcintyre, it is gold for great britain. Delight for the duo and as their achievement started sinking in. So did they. Mcintyre had emulated her Father Mike who won Sailing Gold in 1988, while for mills there was a place in the Record Place with two golds and a silver, now the most successful female sailor the olympics has ever seen. It is mad. It is absolutely mad. Growing up, you know, i obviously like, a lot of olympians dreamed of being here one day and standing on the podium and to do it twice, with saskia before and eilidh this time, i have had two incredible crews to sail with, and ijust feel really lucky. And thousands of miles away at Cardiff Bay Yacht club, the celebrations could also begin. For Hannah Mills family, particularly her parents, it was just as special. I was so relieved for them both, they have worked so hard, they have tried every different approach to tactics, Communication And Anything else they possibly could to give them that extra little edge, it was just, just amazing, absolutely amazing. But elsewhere gold proved agonisingly out of reach. In the boxing, Ben Whittaker had to settle for silver after losing his Light Heavyweight final and his disappointment was all too clear. At the presentation he couldnt even face putting his medal on. Coming second, it seems, was precious little consolation. I just want to say to everyone, i dont want to look like a baby, or a spoilt brat, but, Ijust Am so upset i didnt win the gold, to me i feel like i have lost the gold, i cant celebrate a silverjust yet. Meanwhile in the Superheavyweight Category Frazer clarks hopes of gold were ended by a nasty cut in his semifinal. But for the man who just missed out on a place at the last two games, bronze was worth the wait. And it is the best the Womens Hockey Team can hope for, after their reign as olympic champions came to an end, The Netherlands beating them 5 1 in the semifinal. Once again, the Standout Performance came in the 400 metres hurdles. After Karsten Warholm smashed Ands World Record yesterday, Americas Cindy Mclauchlan did the same to the womens. In the last hour or so, Ben Maher has won gold in the individual Showjumping Event on his horse explosion w after a dramatic six Horse Jump off. Maher completed his run in 37. 85 to pip Swedens Peder Fredricson by 17 Hundredths Of A Second and claim the gold The NetherlandsMaikel Van Der Vleuten finished in third. It is a second olympic title for maher after winning gold in the Team Jumping Event at london 2012. The win gives the equestrian team a fifth Olympic Medal in tokyo, equalling their Record Haul achieved in london. Katarina Johnson Thompson s hopes of an Olympic Medal are over she has withdrawn from the heptathlon after pulling up injured in the 200 Metres. Johnson thompson was fifth overall going into the hepathlon s fourth event. But she had come to tokyo with concerns over an achilles problem. After a good start in the 200 Metres, it was an injury to her right calf that ended her chances. She refused the offer of a wheelchair, getting up to hobble across the line but was later disqualified for having left her lane. I can t see past the devastation for kat. She has worked so hard to get to this position. If you look for a silver lining, it is great at the achilles has not sustained further damage. But it is not uncommon that you see one leg gets injured, something else gets hurt eventually. And it could have beenjust brought on by the highjump. And in the last few moments Andre De Grasse has won gold in the men s 200m a personal best for him, after winning silver five years ago in rio. You can find more on all those stories on the Bbc Sport website. Karen, thank you very much. See you again after Half Past. Gavin. Lets look at some of the other main stories today. The head of the British Army has said that iran must be deterred from carrying out further attacks like the Drone Strike on the Mercer Street tanker. Last thursday a suspected iranian Drone Strike on the Oil Tanker killed a british Security Guard who has been named as Adrian Underwood and the vessel s romanian captain. Speaking to the Today Programme, general Sir Nick Carter said the iranians had made a big mistake. And that britain should be calling out iran for its very reckless behaviour. Iran has denied involvement. What we need to be doing, fundamentally, is calling out iran for its very reckless behaviour. I mean, they made a big mistake on a they did against the Mercer Street Vessel last week, because, of course, that has very much internationalised the State Of Play in the gulf. And i think, you know, we will work out with our allies what is the best way of providing protection. And convoys may not necessarily be the right method. We have used other methods, and we will keep reviewing our way of keeping this happening. But, ultimately, we ve got to restore deterrence. Because it s behaviour like that which leads to escalation, that could very easily lead to miscalculation. And that would be very disastrous for all the peoples of the gulf and the international committee. The head of the Armed Forces speaking on Radio 4 this morning. Our Security Correspondent Frank Gardner is here. That sounds like very strong language to me. Underthe sounds like very strong language to me. Under the circumstances, sounds like very strong language to me. Underthe circumstances, is sounds like very strong language to me. Under the circumstances, is it, given what has happened . Let s me. Under the circumstances, is it, given what has happened . Lets break this down. There given what has happened . Lets break this down. There are given what has happened . Lets break this down. There are to given what has happened . Lets break this down. There are to make this down. There are to make incidents, not necessarily related. They have taken place in a similar area, off the coast of oman. What she was referring to was an attack on a tanker with an explosive drone. A so called suicide run. Britain, the us, Israel And Romania are in No Doubt that iran was behind that. This is a powerful weapon, not something that could be casually launched. It is a heavy weapon, a fatal attack on shipping. Iran has denied it, but they don t believe that. They are taking it to the un security council. Separately, there was another attack on shipping in the last 24 hours, where a merchant vessel, a much smaller one, was hijacked. That was initially blamed, or maritime intelligence services, blamed it on iran and said it was linked to them. At the ship never moved. It was supposed to be steered towards iran and didn t move. The so called 809 armed men who boarded it left it alone at three o clock this morning. So, that is a mysterious one. I think that one is more likely linked to the criminal underworld, the Smuggling World that goes on in the gulf. There is a lot of nefarious activities there that happen below the radar, so to speak. But there is a number of moving factors going on here, which are not immediately apparent. The first one is almost certainly an extension of the tit for Tat Shadow War between iran and israel, where israel is attacking iranians shipping that it believes is transporting smuggled oil to syria, which then supplies his brother. Israel is trying to sabotage iran s nuclear industry. Iran has been attacking shipping, and there has been a number of incidents in this. All of this is making the area more tense, it is a narrow Choke Point through which about a fifth of the maritime Oil Supplies go through. About a fifth of the maritime Oil Supplies go through. Given that iran denies that in supplies go through. Given that iran denies that in relation supplies go through. Given that iran denies that in relation to supplies go through. Given that iran denies that in relation to the supplies go through. Given that iran denies that in relation to the first i denies that in relation to the first incident that you describe, where does that go from here . What happens now . Mil does that go from here . What happens now . . ,. , does that go from here . What happens now . . , now . All of those countries i mentioned. Now . All of those countries i mentioned, britain, now . All of those countries i mentioned, britain, the now . All of those countries i mentioned, britain, the us l now . All of those countries i i mentioned, britain, the us and israel, have been on the phone to Each Other, trying to coordinate activities. This morning, there was activities. This morning, there was a briefing given by israel s foreign ministry, by both the Foreign Minister and also the israeli defence minister, in which they have come out and openly blamed, they have named and blamed the head of the iranian revolutionary guard, the drone operator, the commander of the drone operator, the commander of the drone operating force, they have named him, saying he is the one responsible for the attack on the Mercer Street, which is quite unusual, to ashley come out and say this person did it specifically. No immediate comment from iran. But remember that iran has denied all of this. I think the fact that the second incident is rather more murky, it probably feeds into the iranian narrative that there is something suspicious about these reports. They are saying it s a pretext to carry out a hostile action against iran, because there are so many different things going on here as well. There is nazanin zaghari ratcliffe, she is essentially being held hostage by the iranians. The west considers there is no legal reason for her to have been arrested in the first place, let alone detained for five years plus. She is languishing in prison, poorwoman. Every time relations go sour, or go even more sour, between iran and the west, it is here and other dual nationals who have been imprisoned there on spurious charges that pay the price. So, iran has now stopped negotiations for a prisoner swap, which is really tough on her and her family. Thank you so much for now. The belarusian athlete who refused her team s orders to fly home from the olympic games has landed in vienna in the past few minutes. Krystsina tsimanouskaya is expected to then fly on to poland, where she s been granted a humanitarian visa. Sarah rainsford, is in the belarusian capital, minsk. Well, ever since Krystina Timanovskaya made those very public criticisms of the sporting authorities here, there has been a Smear Campaign on state media. They have been presenting her as arrogant, letting down her Team Mates in a race she said she was not prepared for. But of course the scandal has become political. One state Media Presenter said that the only thing that Krystina Timanovskaya won in the olympics was a visa to poland. No medals, just a visa. So, next ordinary Smear Campaign, which is one of the reasons why she didn t feel safe to return here, to minsk. And today we are seeing another developing story here, which is a Sign Ofjust how little tolerance there is, utter intolerance, in fact, for dissent. Because one of the faces of the Opposition Protest that we saw here last year, maria kolesnikova, went on trial alongside another opposition activist, maxim znak. Now, the two of them are accused of extremely serious charges. They are accused of plotting to overthrow the authorities here. They are facing up to 12 years behind bars. The trial itself was closed, ostensibly for security reasons. At the Family Outside said they believe it is because there is no evidence against these two, they say the entire trial is simply about silencing critics of the authorities here. Borisjohnson is setting off on a two Day Visit to scotland today. But he s declined an invitation to meet the First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, for talks. She had invited the Prime Minister to her official residence to discuss recovery after the pandemic. Mrjohnson has suggested a meeting with the First Ministers of other devolved nations at a later date instead. Nicola sturgeon has been speaking about the Prime Minister s visit. I don t feel snubbed. I think most people think it s a bit odd and a bit strange that we have got a Prime Minister visiting scotland, who talks a lot rightly about the need, despite our political differences, for us to work together where we can on getting through covid 19 and getting into Covid Recovery but doesn t take the opportunity when in scotland to come and Talk To Me directly about how we might cooperate and work together. I think people willjust find that strange and it is for borisjohnson to explain why. This is the first opportunity given on covid for us to sit down socially distance and have a face to Face Chat and i think it would have been a good opportunity. I was getting ready to welcome him to Bute House today. There is a lot that borisjohnson and i fundamentally disagree on but we both lead governments that are trying to get the country through covid and so there is a lot for us to cooperate on. A missed opportunity, but that is on him. I stand ready to work with whoever i can, however i can to get scotland through covid and into recovery. Tony bonsignore is our political correspondent. Was it a snub . Not meeting the First Minister . Good afternoon. Well, not meeting the First Minister . Good afternoon. Well, i not meeting the First Minister . Good afternoon. Well, i guess not meeting the First Minister . limp. Afternoon. Well, i guess it depends which way you look at it. If you were to. Well, you heard from Nicola Sturgeon saying, look, it was Boris Johnson s Nicola Sturgeon saying, look, it was borisjohnson s decision to make this visit to scotland, and she would say there are important things to talk about, recovery from covid being top of them. Really important things for all the different nations to talk about. And yet he is not taking this opportunity to come and Talk To Me. You know, when it became clear that this meeting, there was not going to be a meeting scheduled, it was interesting that it was the snp that took the initiative on monday to make the offer, to say come and see us. From the Prime Minister s point of view, the Government Point of view, you heard there, in the letter he responded with yesterday, he said, there will be lots of opportunities to talk, not just with the be lots of opportunities to talk, notjust with the First Minister of scotland, but the leaders of all of the devolved nations. So, ithink what this represents, to an extent, is the difficult relationship between the First Minister and the Prime Minister. In what is a very, very delicate time. Bill Prime Minister. Your questions answered is one of the things coming up. Now it is time for the weather. Much like the last few days, i think a lot of us will see dry and sunny weather today, but there will be shower clouds bubbling up, particularly across central and northern parts of the uk and that will continue to give rise to some heavy showers and thunderstorms may be some localised flooding in places. We have this Weather Front bringing more cloud to the rest of the uk. This area of low pressure will arrive thursday, friday, into the weekend, turning things very unsettled. We have these showers and Thunder Storms across central areas which will fade away this evening and then many places turn drier but we ll start to see the influence of this new area of low pressure sweeping in to the west, wind picking up, thicker outbreaks of rain and temperatures rising as well. By The End of the week, a lot more unsettled. Showers or longer spells of rain at times. Some quite heavy, but windy for many. There will also be some turnaround, it will not be a complete wash out each day. You can see an unsettled picture at The End of the week, with temperatures a little below the seasonal average. Hello, this is bbc news. The headlines jabs for teenagers all 16 and 17 year olds could soon be eligible for a covid vaccine. Brown produced a composed final run to finish third in the women s Park Skateboarding final and claim bronze. Hosts japan got the Gold And Silver as the sport made its olympic debut. It s incredible. I mean, it feels unreal i m so happy to be here with sakura and kokona. All the girls were ripping it, it was insane. It was a super sick final and qualifier, semifinals. It was insane. Ben whittiker said he was disappointed after losing in the Gold Medal Light heavyweight match, but the british boxer walked away with a silver medal. Cuba s Arlen Lopez was the winner in the Gold Medal match. Landing more punches than whittaker. The brit is from wolverhampton and had said if he won gold he wanted to become the new mayor that won t be happening now unfortunately. Earlier, Frazer Clarke added another medal in the boxing with bronze in the Super Heavyweight. He lost his Semi Final Match after the referee stopped the fight because a deep cut above frazer s eye opened up again by his opponant, the uzbekistan 6 foot 8 giant. But the loss does mean clarke walks away with a bronze medal. Afterwards he said, it was not the fairytale i wanted but i m proud of myself. Katarina Johnson Thompson s hopes of an Olympic Medal are over she has withdrawn from the heptathlon after pulling up injured in the 200 Metres. Johnson thompson was fifth overall, going into the hepathlon s fourth event, but she had come to tokyo with concerns over an achilles problem. She d had a good start to the 200 Metres, but an injury to her right calf ended her chances. She refused the offer of a wheelchair, getting up to hobble across the line but was later disqualified for having left her lane. And in the last hour, Andre De Grasse has won the men s 200 Metres his fifth Olympic Medal and his first gold. The canadian ran a personal best of 19. 62 seconds, finishing ahead of Kenneth Bednarek and Noah Lyles of the usa. Away from the olympics the first test between England And India is underway this morning at trent bridge. England are notably without Ben Stokes. India have made a very good Start Rory burns went for a duck bowled by Jasprit Bumrah in the first over. England have since lost two more wickets leaving them on 84 for 3. The Captainjoe Root is currently batting withjonny bairstow. Manchester city are closing in on the £100 million signing of Aston Villa Captainjack grealish which would make it a british record. A deal might even be done in time for the England Star to play in the Community Shield against Leicester City on saturday. The £100 million Transfer Fee would surpass the £89 million Manchester United paid tojuventus in the signing of Paul Pogba in 2016. Big money involved there. That s all the sport for now. It is expected covid vaccines are to be offered to 16 and 17 year olds. The move would mean about 1. 4 million teenagers will be included in the new rollout but it is not known when the jabs will start. You have been sending in your questions on this update. With me to answer them now is our health correspondentjim reed. I M Alsojoined by Professor Alex Richter from the University Of Birmingham s Institute Of Immunology and immunotherapy. A warm welcome to both of you. Many thanks for being with us as we continue with our conversations about vaccines. A question here which says, i would like to know what is the likelihood of any Side Effects on anyone who is under the age of 18. She says, Side Effects in the future, so i m not sure whether she might be looking to things much further down the line, but anyway. We are talking about the Pfizer Vaccine, the only one which is approved at the moment in the uk for children. The Madonna Vaccine is going through Moderna Vaccine is going through Moderna Vaccine is going through Moderna Vaccine is going through a review in the uk, although it has been approved by the eu. In terms of Side Effects, pain where the shot was given, muscle pain, fever, that kind of think children have Side Effects for between one and three days if they have any Side Effects that kind of thing, and children have Side Effects. There is one specific Side Effects. There is one specific Side Effect which appears to affect young men in particular and this is something called pericarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle. Almost always in this case, where it has been picked up in young men, it has been picked up in young men, it has been picked up in young men, it has been very rare and very mild, and there have been some cases of hospitalisation but pretty mild. Research is going on at the moment to make sure it is the vaccines that are causing that. Injection side and chills are common, may be less than one in ten will get common, may be less than one in ten will get that, common, may be less than one in ten will get that, and one in ten children will get that, and one in ten children will get that, but these incredibly rare Side Effects of inflammation of the heart or severe anaphylaxis, these are so rare that we actually anaphylaxis, these are so rare that we actually cant even quantify them yet, we actually cant even quantify them yet. So we actually cant even quantify them yet, so what we are doing as with all the yet, so what we are doing as with all the Roll Out of the new vaccines and the all the Roll Out of the new vaccines and the new all the Roll Out of the new vaccines and the new medicines, we have to report and the new medicines, we have to report any and the new medicines, we have to report any Side Effects. If you are 17 there has been a change in the guidance and rules and if you are just about to hit your 18th birthday, in the three months before, you should already qualify for a jab if you want one, but the change we are expecting will extend the vaccine rolled out across probably the whole of the uk to all 16 and 17 year olds. How you get it depends on which part of the uk you live in and generally speaking england and wales and Northern Ireland you can book online or go to a Walk In Centre where you just turn up a Walk In Centre where you just turn up and get the vaccine, but in Scotland The Process is slightly different. Similar, we are not there yet and we are still similar, we are not there yet and we are still gathering more information, and i think what the joint information, and i think what the joint committee on vaccines and immunisations has done, the jcvi, that is immunisations has done, the jcvi, that is to immunisations has done, the jcvi, that is to work through the at Risk Groups that is to work through the at Risk Groups because when you introduce a vaccine groups because when you introduce a vaccine into groups because when you introduce a vaccine into a national programme they are vaccine into a national programme they are so vaccine into a national programme they are so many considerations. What the jcvi has done this Age Group. What the jcvi has done is this Age Group. What the jcvi has done is to this Age Group. What the jcvi has done is to be rolling it out through the different Age Groups and those most the different Age Groups and those most vulnerable to covid, and the question most vulnerable to covid, and the question will extend fairly soon to the 1246 question will extend fairly soon to the 12 16 Year Olds as Europe And America the 12 16 Year Olds as Europe And America have already addressed and then the america have already addressed and then the question is what next . What happens then the question is what next . What happens with our younger people . With their happens with our younger people . With their young people, we do a lot of vaccination in children to teach and train of vaccination in children to teach and train the Immune System to prevent and train the Immune System to prevent disease going forward and that has prevent disease going forward and that has been hugely successful in preventing Childhood Mortality but we note preventing Childhood Mortality but we note with covid, the very young are less we note with covid, the very young are less susceptible to severe disease are less susceptible to severe disease and we do not know what their disease and we do not know what their Risks Disease and we do not know what their risks are for things like Long Covid their risks are for things like Long Covid and their risks are for things like Long Covid and other complications yet but they covid and other complications yet but they are relatively spared. The arguments but they are relatively spared. The arguments to vaccinate in the very young arguments to vaccinate in the very young becomes more challenging and i think absolutely, we need more evidence think absolutely, we need more evidence and we need to see those Studies Evidence and we need to see those studies that are coming out later this year studies that are coming out later this year before we can make a decision this year before we can make a decision. , this year before we can make a decision. , , ~ decision. That is interesting. Alex, this is the next question. Dawn is l this is the next question. Dawn is asking why, in relation to the 16 and 17 year olds which is what we are focusing on, but she says come on the basis that even once we are vaccinated we can still spread and catch the disease, if teenagers in the main do not have the same extreme symptoms and none of them have died, why are we forcing them to be vaccinated . Forcing, i m not sure it will be compulsory, so that is one thing. It is opening it up to 16 and 17 year olds unless you know otherwise. But in essence she is saying, why are we doing it . Yes. Otherwise. But in essence she is saying, why are we doing it . Yes, we are not forcing. Saying, why are we doing it . Yes, we are not forcing. Vaccination saying, why are we doing it . Yes, we are not forcing. Vaccination is are not forcing. Vaccination is purely are not forcing. Vaccination is purely voluntary in the uk so the case purely voluntary in the uk so the case has purely voluntary in the uk so the case has to purely voluntary in the uk so the case has to be made and i think she raises case has to be made and i think she raises a case has to be made and i think she raises a really important point. It is thinking raises a really important point. It is thinking about the individual. 0k, is thinking about the individual. Ok. The is thinking about the individual. Ok, the child may have a relatively mild illness, but given the huge amount mild illness, but given the huge amount of mild illness, but given the huge amount of disruption we have had this year. Amount of disruption we have had this year, this is potentially another this year, this is potentially another two weeks of school, away from another two weeks of school, away from their another two weeks of school, away from their education in their gcse and a level years, and especially if they have and a level years, and especially if they have a and a level years, and especially if they have a number of siblings in they have a number of siblings in the house. They have a number of siblings in the house, the parents will have to be off the house, the parents will have to be off work the house, the parents will have to be off work as well. So the disruption from illness is huge and so preventing that could be very valuable so preventing that could be very valuable to the child themselves. We have also valuable to the child themselves. We have also still got this inflammatory syndrome and we dont know how inflammatory syndrome and we dont know how many children get this, it is relatively know how many children get this, it is relatively few, very uncommon, but is relatively few, very uncommon, hut it is relatively few, very uncommon, but it is is relatively few, very uncommon, but it is a is relatively few, very uncommon, but it is a slight concern. The other but it is a slight concern. The other thing, but it is a slight concern. The otherthing, long but it is a slight concern. The other thing, Long Covid, we have seen other thing, Long Covid, we have seen results out of london this morning. Seen results out of london this morning, looking at Long Covid and the risk morning, looking at Long Covid and the risk of morning, looking at Long Covid and the risk of it morning, looking at Long Covid and the risk of it in young people, and maybe the risk of it in young people, and maybe there are significant symptoms in somewhere between one and 8 of young in somewhere between one and 8 of young people. We dont know what is causing young people. We dont know what is causing Long Covid and what the mechanism is and we dont have any Treatments Mechanism is and we dont have any treatments yet for Long Covid, and so with treatments yet for Long Covid, and so with all treatments yet for Long Covid, and so with all this in mind, it may seem. So with all this in mind, it may seem. The so with all this in mind, it may seem, the argument is if we can prevent seem, the argument is if we can prevent infection in the first place. Prevent infection in the first place, we can prevent the disruption to that place, we can prevent the disruption to that Childs Life and potentially protect to that Childs Life and potentially protect them from consequences of covid protect them from consequences of covid infection. Covid infection. There is a lot in there which covid infection. There is a lot in there which is covid infection. There is a lot in there which is really covid infection. There is a lot in| there which is really interesting. Now the next question, because the question of why are we doing it, claire has said, would it not be better to use vaccines on adults especially in countries that have a limited supply before we start thinking about children who generally do not get seriously ill . Again the debate about us versus other countries. Other countries. Massive debate about this even other countries. Massive debate about this even amongst other countries. Massive debate about this even amongst senior| about this even amongst senior Scientist And Andrew pollard, one of the men behind the oxford astrazeneca jab, he has got some strong views on this, and he says we are morally wrong to be vaccinating young people in this country who have a low risk of serious disease while there are people in other countries with a much higher risk you can t have a vaccine, but another view held by other scientist which is, if you look at how many millions and millions of doses might be needed around the world, the 1. 4 million young 16 and 17 year olds in this country that might get the vaccine as a result, they are going to be a very small part of that huge Vaccine Role at which we need elsewhere, so if we decide to vaccinate young people in this country, will it make that much difference internationally . There s a huge debate about this and it goes to essex and to morals as well. Really interesting. To essex and to morals as well. Really interesting. To essex and to morals as well. We have one more story to bring you before we have the weather forecast. Wildfires continue to rage in turkey seven days on from the first blaze, criticism of how the government is handling the situation is growing. Fires have also broken out in other parts of the mediterranean. Sancha berg reports. Fires blazing. Wildfires have been burning for seven days in turkey and these flames are approaching a power station. Strong winds, low humidity and scorching temperatures, the Weather Conditions that helped the fire spread. They are likely to continue into next week. So far, over 130 fires have been extinguished, but many new ones have broken out. These Spanish Planes are part of the latest efforts to get the flames under control. Criticism of the government s handling of the situation is growing. It insists it is doing everything it can. Translation | answered i the delegation that we do not accept help coming from abroad. Once again, i would like to reiterate that notjust today, notjust during such a disaster, it is out of the question to reject offers coming to us because of Pride And Arrogance as our forests are burning. Turkey s not the only country in the region fighting wildfires. In this suburb of northern athens, more than 500 firefighters have been deployed. Houses have burnt down, many have been forced to evacuate as greece experiences its worst heatwave in 30 years. Translation in the area where the fire broke out, | temperatures reached 45c with less than 10 humidity. These extreme conditions are due to the intense heatwave that has been affecting our country for the last week. And in israel, firefighters also used planes and helicopters to fight the wildfire in the forests west ofjerusalem. Many fear these extreme scenes will become more commonplace as climate changes. Sancha berg, bbc news. Now it s time for a look at the weather with stav. Hello. Not a bad day out there for many of us. A lot of places staying dry with some good spells of august sunshine. But there will be showers developing, certainly through the afternoon, across Central Parts of the uk. Likely to cause some localised flooding if you catch them because they will be slow moving which is due to light winds barely any isobars on the Pressure Chart for this afternoon. This Weather Front will enhance Shower Activity across the west and that area of low pressure behind me will arrive thursday, friday and into the weekend, turning things very unsettled. For the rest of the day, looks fine for many, lots of sunshine around. These showers and thunderstorms developing over central and northern parts of england into parts of wales. Like i mentioned, slow moving and heavy, they could give rise to localised flooding. More cloud generally across western scotland, Northern Ireland, but temperatures reaching 22 or 23, and it should feel quite pleasant. Showers then clear away. Much of england and wales will be dry. We will start to see that new area of low pressure arriving across the west. Thicker cloud, outbreaks of rain, winds picking up, particularly in the south west. Also, temperatures will be picking up, so a milder night than of late. For The End of the week, thursday, friday and into the weekend, it will be a lot more unsettled thanks to the low pressure. We will see showers and longer spells of rain and it will be turning windy as well. You can see why this new area of low pressure has more isobars wrapped around it. Active Weather Fronts will slowly move eastwards across the country for thursday. It does mean many central and eastern parts of england, eastern scotland, will start dry, maybe some sunshine before the Cloud And Wind picks up. Outbreaks of Rain Start to spread eastwards through the day and that will be followed by sunshine and heavy blustery showers across southern and western areas. That will impact the temperatures, high Teens Celsius for most. We could see 20 or 21 across the east given the brighter, sunnier start to the day. As we head into friday and the weekend, low pressure just sits across the uk, bringing further windy weather. Showers or even longer spells of rain. Certainly some pretty heavy, may be thundery downpours through friday into saturday. There will be some sunshine in between, despite temperatures being a little below average for the time of year. This is bbc news. The headlines. Jabs for teenagers all 16 and 17 year olds could soon be eligible for a covid vaccine. And professor barbie the scientist who designed the Oxford Coronavirus Vaccine has been honoured with her very own doll, alongside five other women working in science, technology, engineering and maths. More than A Million teenagers could soon be offered a covid vaccine. It s understood that this afternoon, Thejoint Committee on vaccination and immunisation will recommend that 16 and 17 year olds are given the jab. At the moment, only Under 18s with underlying Health Conditions or living with someone vulnerable, qualify for the vaccine. Here sjim reed. 16, 17 year olds have had such a Big Social Life and quite a lot of us have been going out quite a lot, and you know, there s a lot of people as well who aren t wearing masks at the moment, so i think it is really important to be jabbed because it reduces transmission, and also if you Get Covid you don t know how bad you re going to have it. Some people are more affected or less affected than others, and you wouldn t want to be one of the ones who is really badly affected. But this decision wasn t straight forward. The statistics show Under 18s are far less likely to get seriously sick with covid, and while Side Effects such as inflamed Heart Tissue are very rare, they do exist. I think it s the right thing to start extending vaccination down into older teenagers. We know that they have a very high rate of infection, and if you look at where the infection is currently flourishing within society, it s largely in those younger Age Groups. There ll be a downing Street Briefing at Half Past three where we re expecting an announcement on vaccines for 16 and 17 year olds. We ll bring you that live. The Deputy Chief Medical Officerfor england, Professorjonathan Van Tam, Will Bejoined by Professor Wei Shen Lim from Thejoint Committee for vaccinations and immunisation, and Drjune Raine from the medicines and healthcare products regulatory agency. Stay with us for that. Team gb are racking up the medals in tokyo at the olympics, and the success is across a wide range of sports. Ben maher has secured individual Showjumping Gold on his horse, explosion w. History was made in the Skate Park with Sky Brown, who s just 13, taking britain s first skateboarding medal, and securing her place as the country s youngest ever Olympic Medallist. And there was a gold in sailing for Hannah Mills and Eilidh Mcintyre, winning the 470 class, making mills the most successful female olympic sailor of all time, after her gold in rio, and a silver at london 2012. There were two more boxing medals, with Ben Whittaker taking silver in the Light Heavyweight category and Frazer Clarke claiming bronze in the men s Super Heavyweight division. But there s also disappointing news this afternoon, as the reigning World Champion, Katarina Johnson Thompson is out of the heptathlon after a Calf Injury in the 200 Metres. With a full round up of all the action, Natalie Pirks reports from tokyo. Sky brown will take bronze. She has already lived her young life in the spotlight. At 13 years of age. But for the girl born injapan, draped in the british flag, this was the best feeling in the world. Thejudges were looking for difficult tricks, quality and consistency. Sky brown has a giant trick bag. Strap yourselves in, here we go. All she needed was a smooth run. Going for that kickflip indy, we knew it was going to come out. Not ideal. But with three runs allowed, there was still hope. Just missing the kickflip indy. The pressure is on that third and final run now. Time for a pep talk. And in the searing heat of the ariake Skate Park, One British teenager shook off the nerves and kept her cool. There is the kickflip indy, that is what we needed. There is the kick flip, hands in the air. Yes, sky third time is a charm. Team gb had everything crossed. Only the World Champion could deny her a medal. The bronze was in the Bag And History was made. And as the tears flowed the camaraderie was clear, friends and teenage girls living out a dream. It is so cool because i got to be on the podium with my friends, koko and sakura, and just being in tokyo and eating my favourite food, spending time in the village, this is honestly one of my best memories. Sky said she simply wanted to come here, Have Fun and inspire girls around the world. Britain s youngest ever medallist did all of that and so much more. She was born injapan to her Mother Miko and british father, stu. At the age of ten, british skateboarding spotted her talent and saw an opportunity. We said if you want to give it a go, we are skateboard gb, we dont have much resource, we dont have much capacity, but we would be absolutely honoured to help you in that journey in any way we can. Who knew that she would be an olympian and a Bronze Medallist . When i filmed with her in la in 2019, she had her Head And Heart firmly set on her olympic dream. But it almost didn t happen when last year she fell 15 feet while her dad was filming. She was airlifted to hospital with Skull Fractures and broken bones with doctors saying her helmet saved her life. Every time she goes in the air i flinch and i Cant Watch it, i my wife Cant Watch it. You are an amazing skater and olympics doesnt define you. The fact that you are going for. It is what skateboarding is about. It is not about holding back, it is about going for it, i that is what sky is about. She went for it and she got it. Her aim is now to qualify for paris in three years time in both skateboarding and surfing. Don t believe her . Just watch. Let s get a full round up from the Bbc Sport centre, here s austin. Good afternoon. It s been another impressive day for Team Gb. They re now up to fourth in the medals table, as day 12 of the Tokyo Olympics comes to a close. Sky brown has become the youngest british olympic Medal Winner with bronze in the Park Skateboarding. And Hannah Mills is now the most successful female sailor in olympic history taking gold, in her Sailing Class alongside eilidh macintyre. Andy swiss has more. Delight for the duo and as their achievement started sinking in, so did they. Mcintyre had emulated herFather Mike who won Sailing Gold in 1988, while for mills there was a place in the Record Place with two golds while for mills there was a place in the record books with two golds and a silver, now the most successful female sailor the olympics has ever seen. I was so relieved for them both, they have worked so hard, they have tried every different approach to tactics, Communication And Anything else they possibly could to give them that extra little edge, it wasjust. Just amazing, absolutely amazing. But elsewhere gold proved agonisingly out of reach. In the boxing, Ben Whittaker had to settle for silver after losing his Light Heavyweight final and his disappointment was all too clear. At the presentation he couldn t even face putting his medal on. Coming second, it seems, was precious little consolation. I just want to say to everyone, i don t want to look like a baby, or a spoilt brat, but, Ijust Am so upset i didn t win the gold, to me i feel like i have lost the gold, i can t celebrate a silverjust yet. Meanwhile in the Superheavyweight Category Frazer clarke s hopes of gold were ended by a nasty cut in his semifinal. But for the man who just missed out on a place at the last two games, bronze was worth the wait. And it is the best the women s Hockey Team can hope for, after their reign as olympic champions came to an end, The Netherlands beating them 5 1 in the semifinal. Once again, though, The Stand Out Performance came in the 400 metres hurdles after warholm smashed the men s World Record yet, america s Sydney Mcloughlin did the same to the women s. It s mcloughlin s title, and A New World Record. Two new records in just 24 hours, the hurdles it seems are proving no barrier to brilliance. Andy swiss, bbc news. Meanwhile, Ben Maher won gold in the individual Showjumping Event, on his Horse Explosion W after a dramatic six horsejump off. Maher completed his run in 37. 85 to pip sweden s Peder Fredricson by 17 Hundredths Of A Second and claim the gold The NetherlandsMaikel Van Der Vleuten finished in third. It s a second olympic title for maher after winning gold in the Team Jumping Event at london 2012. And Andre De Grasse has won the men s 200 Metres his fifth Olympic Medal and his first gold. The canadian ran a personal best of 19. 62 seconds, finishing ahead of Kenneth Bednarek and Noah Lyles of the usa. It would have beaten Usain Bolt in the 200 Metres final in rio five years ago. That s all the sport for now. We are talking today about Covid Vaccinations for 16 and 17 year olds. We are coming up to the downing Street Briefing due in about 15 minutes, at Half Past, where we think we will hear a lot more about the Roll Out for late teenagers. We will bring you that statement live at Half Past. We can talk about the whole concept about giving vaccinations to that Age Bracket. Let s talk now to Dr Mike Tildesley from the university of warwick. He s a member of the Spi M Modelling group of scientists which contributes advice to sage the uk government s advisory group. Assuming we get this confirmed, your thoughts on vaccines for 16 and 17 year olds. It thoughts on vaccines for 16 and 17yearolds 17yearolds. It is difficult. I think one 17yearolds. It is difficult. It is difficult. I. Think one of the reasons it has 17yearolds. It is difficult. I think one of the reasons it has been quite a long period of time to come to this decision, of course we know that covid is less severe in younger people so of course by vaccinating children there is less direct risk of them developing serious illness. But the more people we can vaccinate, it gets us closer to providing protection as a nation. Whilst there is unlikely to be a significant direct impact on children if they get infected with covid, of course if they are vaccinated it protects those more elderly and vulnerable individuals who might not have detection themselves through vaccination. Hopefully if this announcement comes, we can get as many of those 16 and 17 year olds vaccinated as possible to protect the rest of us. And this is the pfizer injection. No suggestion that Side Effects would be any different to anyone who has already had Covid Vaccination . That doesnt already had Covid Vaccination . That doesnt appear already had Covid Vaccination . That doesnt appear to already had Covid Vaccination . Trisgt doesnt appear to be the case. I doesn t appear to be the case. I believe it would be the Pfizer Vaccine, which has been approved for people under 40. There doesn t appear to be people under 40. There doesn T Appearto be any people under 40. There doesn t appear to be any evidence that there is any more risk in children than in older people. I would say we should get as many of those teenagers vaccinated as possible. We are always ready to analyse the government for mistakes over time but the Vaccination Roll Out has been incredible, the way it has been happening, the optic across the population has been massive. We are pushing 90 of all adults had a first dose, the high 70 have had a second dose. It is becoming evident now in terms of whilst we have seen significant numbers of cases over the last few weeks we haven t seen a high number of Hospital Admissions or deaths, which is indicative of how successful the Vaccination Programme has been at preventing severe disease. That programme has been at preventing severe disease. Severe disease. That the briefing is due at 3 30pm meanwhile, New Research shows that children who become ill with coronavirus are unlikely to suffer with long term effects. Scientists at king s college london, found illness from covid lasted, on average, no more than a week in people aged between five and 17. They describe the findings as reassuring. I can now speak to dr liz whittaker, who s infectious diseases lead at the royal college of paediatrics and child health. Good afternoon. I am interested in what you make of this research. I think that is what the jcvi have inflammation is. I think that is what thejcvi have been reviewing. I think parents and children should be reassured that in our setting the jcvi is making sure they have the best evidence to make the Risk Benefit Decision over whether there would be a risk with the vaccine that would be more than the benefit of the vaccine for children and young people. They have made that decision based on really good evidence. Decision based on really good evidence New Figures from the Office For National Statistics, show more than 9 in 10 adults in the uk, now have antibodies against coronavirus. Roughly 93 of adults tested by the ons during the week to the 18th Ofjuly, had covid antibodies, up slightly from 92 the previous fortnight. Antibodies are evidence of a past infection with covid, or of having received at least one dose of vaccine. We will be in Downing Street for details about the vaccines that have passed. Back to the olympics now and as well as watching the more traditional sports, we ve also seen climbing making it s debut in tokyo over the last couple of days. Shauna coxsey was flying the flag for Team Gb but she sadlyjust missed out on making to the final. The 28 year old is set to retire after these games. Let s speak to one of shauna coxsey s friends, will bosi, who s a professional climber too. Good afternoon. Heartbreaking that she is not in the final, of course. Borisjohnson has set off on a two Day Visit to scotland today. Tony bonsignore is our political correspondent. Nicola sturgeon said she does not feel snubbed. Nicola sturgeon said she does not feelsnubbed. It Nicola Sturgeon said she does not feel snubbed. It is certainly how some people are reading it. This is the first opportunity given covid is to sit down socially distanced and have a face to Face Chat and i think it would have been a good opportunity. I was getting ready to welcome him to Bute House today. There is a lot that borisjohnson and i fundamentally disagree on but we both lead governments that are trying to get the country through covid and so there is a lot for us to cooperate on. A missed opportunity but that is on him. I stand ready to work with whoever i can, however i can to get scotland through covid and into recovery. There was another Party Leader in scotland there was another Party Leader in scotland today, Sir Keir Starmer at the labour scotland today, Sir Keir Starmer at the labour leader, on a completely unrelated the labour leader, on a completely unrelated trip, a coincidence we are told that unrelated trip, a coincidence we are told that he unrelated trip, a coincidence we are told that he was there at the same time told that he was there at the same time he told that he was there at the same time. He was asked about the meeting not happen they should meet, they shouldn t have an argument about where and when, they need to work together. In 100 days, cop will have been over and i want to see the Prime Minister being able to demonstrate the diplomacy we need for the uk, and that should be here in scotland and across the world. The Paris Agreements told us what we need to do and the focus for glasgow is how do and the focus for glasgow is how do we achieve that . But we have not heard from Boris Johnson but we have not heard from Boris Johnson and all of this. He is in scotland. Johnson and all of this. He is in scotland, the first day of the visit. Scotland, the first day of the visit. And scotland, the first day of the visit, and i am sure we will get his thoughts visit, and i am sure we will get his thoughts on visit, and i am sure we will get his thoughts on that a little later. Now it s time for a look at the weather with stav. To the west of the uk. And in the next few minutes we ll be hearing from Downing Street where we re expecting an announcement on vaccines for 16 and 17 year olds we ll bring you that live. 13 year old Sky Brown becomes britain s youngest ever Olympic Medallist winning bronze in skateboarding and Ben Maher takes top spot in the individual showjumping. We last looked at data at the End Ofjune and the early part ofjuly, and at that stage there were emerging reports of myocarditis which is inflammation of the heart muscle, following vaccination of the Pfizer Vaccine, and as you know, the information available is partly dependent on the number of people who are vaccinated and as the weeks go by many many more people are vaccinated so the difference is not new data in terms of new data coming from elsewhere but a greater certainty of the data as more data increases. We also obviously reviewed other data points and i mentioned earlier or the other factors we looked at and we must not forget that the Summer Wave we are experiencing now was also quite uncertain about four weeks ago and now we have more information on that, so it is notjust new data on one point but it is new data across a range of factors that influences advice. On your second point about parental consent, in the uk a person who is 16 and above is deemed able to consent for themselves and if they are competent and able to consent for themselves then that consent for themselves then that consent holds. fin Consent for themselves then that consent holds. Consent for themselves then that consent holds. On the point about when this is consent holds. On the point about when this is going consent holds. On the point about when this is going to consent holds. On the point about when this is going to start, when this is going to start, obviously, children are going to start going back to colleges and sixth forms from september and in scotland that will be actually i think slightly earlier in some cases, so there is no time to waste. In terms of getting on with this. We have the jcvi in terms of getting on with this. We have thejcvi advice on starting that initial first dose in 16 and 17 year olds and then i want to proceed as fast as is practically possible, which is not going to be tomorrow. I dont think it is likely tomorrow. I dont think it is likely to be early next week but i can tell you that the nhs has been kept informed of what has been deliberated byjcvi and it has been preparing for multiple permutations and options for very many weeks now. I would expect that this programme will start in a very short number of weeks, as opposed to any longer than that. Were there to be any questions about vaccine supply, there is a plentiful supply to meet any of the possible Permutations Thatjcvi could have come up with independently, and indeed thejcvi advice has not taken into account any kind of rate limiting factors related to supply because that is not an issue at all, so we have the supply and im expecting this to start within a very short number of weeks indeed. We are indeed concerned about the health of 12 15 Year Olds as it pertains to covid and you will remember that our advice is that well 15 year olds who have underlying Health Conditions should be offered the vaccine 12 15 Year Olds. We know that from data in the uk the vast majority of 12 15 Year Olds who become seriously unwell are those who have underlying Health Conditions in the first place. And so by offering vaccination in a targeted manner, we will be protecting the vast majority of 1215 will be protecting the vast majority of 12 15 Year Olds. What we have not yet decided definitively on is the otherwise healthy 12 15 Year Olds who are at very much lower risk of some of these severe outcomes we are talking about and we will review the data, when the data allows, and we want to try and protect them with vaccination as well, but that is a decision we cannot make at this point or we would prefer not to make at this point. I will try to give an illustration as to what we mean by certainty of information because Thatis Certainty of information because that is how we are making advice, giving advice, it is based on how certain information is and notjust on the balance of harms and benefits. If you imagine two dots and if we are very certain about them and imagine the points on my fingers as the two dots, we can tell that they are holding up quite far apart from Each Other, but if the information is less certain, what we really have is fuzziness around the certainty of the information so imagine it is not a dot but a hand and if they are farapart imagine it is not a dot but a hand and if they are far apart enough you can tell that they are far apart but if we have two dots which are close to Each Other and the information is fuzzy, it will look like that and it is more difficult to tell the separation between the dots. That is the difference between a certainty in the data that we have over time. So as time goes on we have more certainty regarding the size of these data points, the data points may not actually change where they are, but if the certainty increases we are more certain about the separation between these data points and therefore we can be more certain about the advice. I dont know whether that helps. Laughter your question whether that helps. Laughter your question to whether that helps. Laughter your question to me whether that helps. Laughter your question to me was whether that helps. Laughterj your question to me was about whether that helps. Laughter your question to me was about 1617 your question to me was about 16 17 year olds, and i have one child who is an adult and i have two children who are younger than 16 and 17, but i would be very much in favour based upon the adjudication ofjcvi, if they were 16 and 17, for them to be vaccinated, initially with the first dose as jcvi vaccinated, initially with the first Dose Asjcvi has said. All of the adults in my known Family Group have had all of the covid vaccines that they are eligible for. Im a strong believer that these vaccines are safe and effective and im a strong believer that they are changing how we can learn to live in a much more normal way with covid 19 for the foreseeable future. We are as you can imagine being cautionary in the way we are approaching this and that is because we place a very high value on the safety of our children and young people. I believe we do that rightly and that reflects the public viewpoint as well, that we should regard the safety of our children and young people very highly. Regarding those dots, it is not a simple balance of one number against the next number, and ive listed to you the large range of factors that we consider when coming up with advice. Some of those things cannot be measured or boiled down into a single number and so it is the overall sense from the committee as to whether something is more beneficial or more harmful, taking into account a range of issues. Im reluctant to respond by saying its this number against that Number And Thatis this number against that number and that is as easy as it goes because then i dont think you would need a wide range of experts to come up with advice. There are 16 voting members and four co opted members of the committee, and if you add on a conservative basis, their experience, and i know it to be wrong for some of them, it is much greater, but we average them at 20 years of experience, then every time the committee meets there is 400 person years of experience sitting around the table considering the evidence. That is a lot of expertise. They are committed to Evidence Based Judgments and Evidence Based Judgments and evidence based practice and we are committed to having an independent jcvi that gives us that kind of advice. I think the professor has explained that there is time to go very carefully and very safely on this and there is time to go at the speed of science and never faster than that, and that is the intention here. The remarks that we have made about 12 15 Year Olds absolutely stand in terms of those risk conditions, where Jcvi Stand in terms of those risk conditions, wherejcvi has made the pronouncement, and absolutely stand in terms ofjcvi having been asked to continually review the list of people eligible, 12 15, in those high risk categories, and we will give them the time to arrive at a further view when they are ready to arrive at it in terms of healthy 1215 arrive at it in terms of healthy 12 15 Year Olds. Next steps, on the Uk Covid 19 vaccinationjourney. It is now next steps, on the Uk Covid 19 vaccination journey. It is now is full speed ahead im getting that initial dose into a healthy 16 to 17 year olds with no underlying risk conditions. There is time still, plenty of time, as the data emerge to consider the best option for a second dosing in 16 to 17 year olds, and we will givejcvi the space to do that. There is time to continually review the emerging data in the context of healthy 12 to 15 year olds, and as professor lim has said, there is nothing ruled out and there is nothing ruled in at this stage. We will proceed at the speed of science and at the speed of data availability. Thank you, all, for your attention. This Press Briefing is now closed. Professorjonathan professor jonathan Van Tam Professorjonathan Van Tam starting and ending that briefing, saying how lovely it was to have journalists in the room. What a nice man he is and thatis the room. What a nice man he is and that is the announcement we had been anticipating, that covid jabs will be offered to 16 and 17 year olds. He reflects England Deputy chief medical officer for england, but we have had confirmation from other devolved nations that they will be following suit. Before i bring in our health correspondent, has been listening to all of that, let me talk you through the key points. It was a reasonably lengthy briefing and you might not have heard it all, so lets summarise whats been said in the last 35 and its also. The jcvi, as i say, is advising 16 and 17 year olds to have a first pivot jab, and this is the size Biontech Vaccine we are talking about at this stage. Thejcvi are saying there have been large changes in the Way Covid 19 is spreading in recent weeks, particularly in younger Age Groups, and as the adult Vaccine Progress successfully, more safety data has been their web become available, so its important to review the advice the vaccination of young people. The Health Secretary sajid javid say the government is accepting this advice today, he is asking the nhs to prepare to vaccinate those eligible as soon as possible. And, as i say, the devolved administrations of wales and Northern Ireland echoing this as well, confirming that 16 and 17 year olds will be eligible for a vaccine there as well. The scottish government had already endorsed the idea of giving jabs to this particular Age Group. So lets assess what weve heard, with our health correspondent. As i say, another group of people to whom the vaccine will be extended, give us that sense of whatjonathan Van Tam was saying about how quickly this could all potentially happen as well. , , this could all potentially happen as well. ,. ,. ,. , well. Thats right, another million orso well. Thats right, another million or so 16 and well. Thats right, another million or so 16 and 17yearolds well. Thats right, another million or so 16 and 17yearolds will well. Thats right, another million| or so 16 and 17yearolds will now or so 16 and 17 year olds will now be offered the job, its not compulsory. What they dont know yet and didnt tell it is what the Dosing Interval will be for this new group. At the moment it is eight weeks for adults between that first and second dose. They havent decided for 16 and 17 year olds yet, they will give you the first dose and then look at the data to see when a second dose should be given. You asked when this could start, jonathan Van Tam saying there is no time to waste, this will be a very short number of weeks, but he didnt know for sure. Also a kind of strong suggestion that that younger Age Group, 12 to 15 year olds, could also be included at some point in this Roll Out, they were saying that nothing has been ruled in or out when it comes to that younger Age Group, 12 to 15 year olds, but at the moment the advice is unchanged, they wont be offered the vaccine for the moment, they will keep looking at the data. Van tam in the questioning was asked when the Roll Out first started at the start of last year, he was asked would you recommend to your mother that you should get the vaccine, now he was asked would you recommend it to a 16 year old son or daughter. He said, one of my children is too old for that, two of them are too young, but at the moment he said he would be very much in favour of recommending it to them when they got to that age. And on that point, there was an interesting question about consent, for that Age Group, would they have to get parental consent, and the understanding was that they would not. The Risk And Benefits, if they can understand the Risk And Benefits then they should be able to legally give consent themselves. Themselves. Thats all really interesting. Themselves. Yes, i think what your overall response to this . Yes, i think what this your overall response to this . Yes, i think what this reflects your overall response to this . Yes, i think what this reflects is your overall response to this . Yes i think what this reflects is that Jcvi I5 i think what this reflects is that jcvi is going really very carefully, making sure that the recommendations we make are not ones that we then have to go back on later, waiting for the evidence to come through to get enough confidence that we are giving advice that is the right advice for the different Age Groups. There is obviously a lot of people out there who have made up their minds one way or the other about this, butJcvi I5 minds one way or the other about this, butjcvi is in between, we are thi5, butjcvi is in between, we are actually looking at the evidence and moving with it as it comes. And i think this is a positive development, but a cautious one, as you just heard we are recommending the first dose, we are not saying when or even which vaccine should be given as a second dose, and that will come through as we get the evidence we need to be able to give confident recommendations. I thought that was really confident recommendations. I thought that was really interesting, confident recommendations. I thought that was really interesting, the that was really interesting, the point was made that some countries give a second dose automatically after three weeks, and of the sea that decision has been taken not to do anything hard and fast in this country, and that is aboutjust, what, watching and waiting, analysing data . What, watching and waiting, anal sin data . ,. , ~ analysing data . Yes, and i think, ou analysing data . Yes, and i think, you know. Analysing data . Yes, and i think, you know. We analysing data . Yes, and i think, you know, we have analysing data . Yes, and i think, you know, we have enormous analysing data . Yes, and i think, i you know, we have enormous levels analysing data . Yes, and i think, you know, we have enormous levels of public Support And Trust for a programme, and one of the reasons for that is that people can see that we are not rushing into decisions to first. We are really looking at this carefully and working things out. And the Dose Interval thing is a great example of that, as wei shen lim summarised in the Press Conference, earlier this year we decided to spread out those two doses for very good reasons, there was a lot of descent from that, a lot of criticism, people saying why are you doing the same as every other country, and as it turns out that was very good advice, we saved a lot of extra lives and even as a bonus we have got better protection in people who have had their doses later. So going carefully has proved to be the right way to do things, it builds public trust, people can be sure that the advice they are getting is good, strong advice and they are not going to hear us change our minds and say, well, that was wrong, you know, in a week or twos time. We are going one step at a time. We are going one step at a time. , t, t, t. Time. And the suggestion that came throu. H time. And the suggestion that came through from time. The that younger Age Group, what are you lookin at . ,. , t, looking at . The most important thing is the epidemiology looking at . The most important thing is the epidemiology of looking at . The most important thing is the epidemiology of the looking at . The most important thing is the epidemiology of the infection i is the epidemiology of the infection in that Age Group. Weve got to have a problem to prevent, and the data weve got so far relates to children in the first and second waves primarily. Weve now got a third wave going on with A New variant, and if we were to learn that we are seeing large numbers of children in that Age Range coming into hospital, getting seriously ill, that would change things entirely in terms of the balance of Risk And Benefit that wei shen lim was showing with that illustration with the dots in the hands of the programme just now. The other thing is the certainty of data around adverse effects, youve heard mention of this Myocarditis Risk which is something we are looking at extremely carefully, we dont want to be harming people, after all, and if that were to change, either in the direction of showing it is not so much problem as we fear, or conversely that its more of a problem than we thought, that would obviously change the balance of Risk And Benefit as well. find obviously change the balance of Risk And Benefit as well. And benefit as well. And ust a final thought i and benefit as well. And ust a final thought before H And Benefit as well. And ust a final thought before we and benefit as well. Obviously teenagers are most normally immunised with l are most normally immunised with vaccines in school, but if, as jonathan Van Tam was saying, this is going to move forward quickly, then its going to need to be done before they go back to school, or at least started. And i would therefore speculate that it will likely use the exact same mechanisms as weve been seeing with the programme all the way down to 18 year olds so far, with Mass Vaccine centres and gps. So that would be my prediction, but youre right, is not something i really have much to do with. flit really have much to do with. Of course. Well, good to talk to you. Thank you forjoining us. And lets discuss the whole policy as well with jeff burton. Good afternoon. A welcome move for you in retired to 16 or 17 goals . I think this is an optimistic afternoon for young people, because once weve heard lots of Government Rhetoric about the importance of education, etc, that really hasnt been matched up with actions, and today i think, particularly for those 16 and 17 year olds who will be worrying about examinations, who saw what might happen to their Sister Or Brother last year, if this is going to reduce the disruption they would have been facing potentially, that has to be a good news story, i think. About educational matters rather than medical, and we would say and this is we know there is a president that the Flu Vaccine for primary age children has in the past been done on school premises, we understand that. Thats different from what we were being asked to do with the lateral flow tests, where you will remember that secondary schools, effie colleges, sixth form colleges, essentially were expected to turn themselves into built hospitals. This would be different, and if what it means is that for a very short amount of time and space in the school of the college was being used, but clinical experts were delivering thatjab, if there are benefits to that because more young people will take it up, then that is something we would support, but they would need to be the absolute resorting to make sure that happened. Resorting to make sure that happened resorting to make sure that hasened. t, t, happened. And i thought about headina happened. And i thought about heading into happened. And i thought about heading into the happened. And i thought about heading into the next happened. And i thought aboutj heading into the next academic happened. And i thought about heading into the next academic year, here we are, first week of august, teachers one would hope generally trying to take a break after a busy school year, leaders prepping for the new academic year ahead how other people you represent feeling as we go into another academic year about disruption, about trying to get some normality back to childrens lives . How are you viewing the next few weeks, really . Its been a bruising 15 or 16 months for everybody working in schools, not just teachers for everybody working in schools, notjust teachers but for everybody working in schools, not just teachers but all the other staff and the people i represent. I think like all of us they are craving a kind of normality. But i think there are things the government could make do to make sure we have more normality, next week we will get results, there will be controversies around how those have been derived. We still dont know exact what is going to happen next year, there is a kind of business as usual approach from the government have not learned the lesson that they needed a Plan B this year, they ought to address that immediately. And theres other things they could be doing to reassure parents and particularly young people, they could look at ventilation in schools and colleges in the way the usa has given a huge priority to all of that, and if they are expecting us to do the lateral flow tests at the beginning of term to be able to check you hasnt has not got symptoms, they need to be resourcing that are letting us know now that that is an expectation. So we are not out of the woods with all this, but the more we can get a kind of reassurance from the government and the clarity from the government, the more i think parents and particularly those young people will be reassured that the disruption of the past 15 months will start to become a thing of the past. Thank ou so become a thing of the past. Thank you so much you so much. Just when i was chatting Tojeff Burton there, we just had through the latest government data on all of this. The uk reporting 119 deaths in the last 24 hour period, as ever thatis the last 24 hour period, as ever that is someone who has died within 28 days of a positive covid test. And in terms of the new number of infections, as you can see, 29,300, just over, that is the number of new covid infections in the last 24 hour period. Up on the previous period which was less than 28,000. Those are the latest figures, the latest data through in the last few minutes. And in terms of the Vaccine Programme Weve been talking about, specifically in relation to 1617 year olds, i think weve just had the most recent comments from the Prime Minister. Lets hear what he had to say about that new advice about vaccinating older teenagers. Im looking forward to continuing to work with the scottish government, and will do so, getting ready for cop26, but above all completing our Roll Out of the vaccines, which has been a pan uk effort, a fantastic effort by our national health service, by the armed services, by the volunteers, a wonderful tribute to the efforts of the whole country and i think the scottish government for what they have been doing, really high rate of vaccination here in scotland, really fantastic achievement by the people of scotland. Coming forward to get vaccinated. Working on them. Working with them to finish that. New research suggests most children who become ill with covid recover within a week, and long Term Symptoms are rare. Scientists from Kings College london say theyre reassured, that the number of young people who experience prolonged illness is low. Its definitely an element of the unknown, which is slightly unsettling as a parent. Is that high enough . No, i want higher. But within a week, Arlos Cough and runny nose was gone and he was back to his normal self. New research suggests that recovery time is typical for most children with few experiencing long Term Symptoms. The study looked at more than 1700 children who were reported to have developed symptoms and had tested positive for covid 19. It found fewer than one in 20 experienced symptoms for four weeks or more and just one in 50 had symptoms for more than eight weeks. The most common issues were headaches and tiredness. Can children have prolonged illness after covid 19 . Yes, they can but it is not common and most of these children get better with time. Children can have prolonged symptoms from other illnesses as well and an important Take Home Message is we need to be looking after all children who have contracted illness duration. Protracted illness duration. Scientists hope their findings will reassure families whilst also validating those who have experienced prolonged illness like valentinas to children. She runs a Long Covid Support Group and thinks their continuous cough for three months could be a long Term Symptom following the infection. We havent been seen at that time by specialists to identify that this is covid 19 related but we cant really define whether they had Long Covid but based On My Own experiences and families that i have contact with, it is very much likely that they had it. Specialist centres have been set up to help those living with the long term effects of the virus. Anyone concerned about a child is advised to contact their gp. New figures from the Office For National Statistics show more than nine in ten adults in the uk now have antibodies against coronavirus. Roughly 93 of adults tested by the ons during the week to the 18th Ofjuly had covid antibodies, up slightly from 92 the previous fortnight. Antibodies are evidence of a past infection with covid, or of having received at least one dose of vaccine. We turn our attention is now to an entirely different story. New research has shown that the proportion of the population who are exposed to flooding has risen by 24 since the turn of the century ten times higher than scientists previously thought. Up to 86 Million people are now thought to live in regions that are at risk of flooding. Its a big piece of research. Lets get more on this with one of the people who put together this research, Dr Beth Tellman whos an assistant professor of geography at the university of arizona. Very good afternoon from us here in london. Those are some startling figures there its a lot to discuss in a few minutes, but talk is through your broadbrush findings on what elements of it surprised you and the team. Thanks so much. So what we did is we use satellites to look at where we had seen large floods occur and map all of that water over the past almost 20 years from 2000 to 2018, and then we looked to see in these places that weve seen floods, what is happening with population dynamics, and we were really surprised to find that up to 86 new people were now living, had been added to this flood plains, over the Course Ofjust 15 added to this flood plains, over the course of just 15 years. Added to this flood plains, over the Course Ofjust 15 years. So we were really concerned to see so much flood plain prone development in places that had just recently been inundated. 50 places that had ust recently been inundated. ,. , j~ ~. , inundated. So another 86 Million eole. I inundated. So another 86 Million people i mean. Inundated. So another 86 Million people. I mean, would inundated. So another 86 Million people. I mean, would i inundated. So another 86 Million people. I mean, would i be inundated. So another 86 Million i people. I mean, would i be correct to assume that there are obviously certain parts of the world that are much more prone than others, but for all sorts of reasons, explain where your focus is . All sorts of reasons, explain where yourfocus is . 50 all sorts of reasons, explain where your focus is . Your focus is . So most of this population your focus is . So most of this Population Growth your focus is . So most of this Population Growth is your focus is . So most of this | Population Growth is happening your focus is . So most of this Population Growth is happening in sub saharan africa, south east asia and in southern asia. And theres multiple reasons for this. One could potentially be changing climate and flood plains expanding into places that are very highly densely populated, and another is that vulnerable populations often have no choice but to move into these environmentally hazardous areas, especially in rapidly urbanising cities, some of the cheapest land, the only available land for informal settlements or slums tends to be in places like flood plains that have been flooded. So i think those are the two large reasons we are seeing such a shift. The two large reasons we are seeing such a shift such a shift. Right, and both things are something such a shift. Right, and both things are something we such a shift. Right, and both things are something we could such a shift. Right, and both things are something we could and such a shift. Right, and both things are something we could and should such a shift. Right, and both things i are something we could and should be doing something about. Youve got climate change on the one Hand But Youve also got where building is happening and how, and how robustly the building is taking place. Definitely. We need stronger Land Use and zoning policies to try to prevent that development from happening, and real options for people for managed relocation in retreat, public housing programmes to make sure people have other places to live and dont have to settle there, if we cant relocate people, really think about what are the safety systems we have in place for evacuation, early warning, insurance and to make sure floods dont devastate their lives and livelihoods. 50 dont devastate their lives and livelihoods. Dont devastate their lives and livelihoods. So it can be done, eole livelihoods. So it can be done, people can livelihoods. So it can be done, people can be livelihoods. So it can be done, people can be protected, livelihoods. So it can be done, people can be protected, but i people can be protected, but everything you are outlining costs money, of course. Money, of course. Yeah. It definitely money, of course. Yeah. It definitely costs money, of course. Yeah. It definitely costs money, money, of course. Yeah. It| definitely costs money, but money, of course. Yeah. It i definitely costs money, but it money, of course. Yeah. It definitely costs money, but it costs a lot less money to take action now thanit a lot less money to take action now than it does to recover later. Usually save about 6 in relief for every dollar you spend on preparation and recovery. So it is an upfront Cost And Investment but its actually cheaper in The End. Thats a really interesting statistic, actually, its quite sobering. And in this country we are building up to the climate conference in glasgow in november, these are big global issues on which countries need to agree, i think. Is that fair . Is this absolutely the sort of research that should be discussed there . Sort of research that should be discussed there . , a. ,. , discussed there . Definitely. We also in the study discussed there . Definitely. We also in the study looked discussed there . Definitely. We also in the study looked at discussed there . Definitely. We also in the study looked at potential business as usual, if we continue to emit what we are a knitting scenario, and those models estimate hundred and 80 Million new people could be exposed to floods by 2030, almost double what weve seen in the past 15 years. So if we dont take hold of this problem now, then we think the climate will exacerbate it significantly. Think the climate will exacerbate it significantly significantly. Goodness very sobering significantly. Goodness very sobering. Thank significantly. Goodness very sobering. Thank you significantly. Goodness very sobering. Thank you so significantly. Goodness very sobering. Thank you so much significantly. Goodness very. Sobering. Thank you so much for joining us. Everyone is waving today this is just. I go away for ten days and everyone is very cheerful when i come back lets move on. Now its time for a look at the weather. To the west of th this area of low pressure will arrive thursday, friday, into the weekend, turning things very unsettled. We have these showers and Thunder Storms across central areas which will fade away this evening and then many places turn drier but well start to see the influence of this new area of low pressure sweeping in to the west, wind picking up, thicker outbreaks of rain and temperatures rising as well. The headlines jabs for teenagers all 16 and 17 year olds will be offered the pfizer covid vaccine. Team gb have continued their impressive run of medals with another five on day 12 of the olympics. Hannah mills has become the games most successful female sailor of all time after she won gold alongside Eilidh Mcintyre in the 4 70 class. The pair finished fifth in the medal race, but their earlier performances were enough to secures mills third Olympic Medal and a second gold, in three games. Gb now have five Sailing Medals in tokyo including three golds. Its mad, its absolutely mad. Growing up, obviously, a lot of olympians dreamed of being here one day and standing on top of the podium and to do it twice with saskia before and eilidh this time, ive had two incredible crews to sail with and i feel really lucky. The support back home has been unreal, so thank you, everyone. Sky brown has made history of her own too becoming Team Gb s youngest olympic Medal Winner at the Age Ofjust 13 and 28 days. Afterfailing in herfirst two, brown produced a composed final run to finish third in the womens Park Skateboarding final and claim bronze. Hosts japan got the Gold And Silver as the sport made its olympic debut. Its incredible. I mean, it feels unreal im so happy to be here with sakura and kokona. All the girls were ripping it, it was insane. It was a super sick final and qualifier, semifinals. It was insane. Boxer Ben Whittaker said he lost the Gold Medal, rather than won a silver, in the Light Heavyweight division. The brit was beaten in the final by cubas Arlen Lopez, who landed more punches than whittaker. The brits from wolverhampton and had said if he won the gold he wanted to become the new mayor but for now, at least, he says hell be sticking to boxing meanwhile, Frazer Clarke added another medal in the ring with bronze in the Super Heavyweight division. He lost his semi final after the referee stopped the fight because a deep cut above frazers eye. But the loss does mean clarke walks away with a bronze medal. He said he was proud of his achievment, even though it wasnt the fairytale he wanted. Katarina Johnson Thompsons hopes of an Olympic Medal are over she has withdrawn from the heptathlon after pulling up injured in the 200 Metres. Johnson thompson was fifth overall, going into the hepathlons fourth event, but she had come to tokyo with concerns over an achilles problem. Shed had a good start to the 200 Metres, but an injury to her right calf ended her chances. She refused the offer of a wheelchair, getting up to hobble across the line but was later disqualified for having left her lane. I cant see past the devastation for kat. Shes worked so hard to get to this position. If you look for a silver lining, its great that the achilles has not sustained further damage. But it is not uncommon that you see, one leg gets injured, something else gets hurt eventually. And it could have beenjust brought on by the highjump. Andre De Grasse has won the mens 200 Metres his fifth Olympic Medal and his first gold. The canadian ran a personal best of 19. 62 seconds, finishing ahead of Kenneth Bednarek and Noah Lyles of the usa. Away from the olympics the first test between England And India is underway at trent bridge. England are notably without Ben Stokes and they got off to a dreadful Start Batting first. Opener Rory Burns went for a duck bowled byJasprit Bumrah in the first over. England then steadied the ship slightly through Captain Joe Root and jonny bairstow, but theyve lost two quick wickets. They are 155 6 Butjoe Root is still there, 64 not out at the moment. And Manchester City are closing in on the signing of Aston Villa Captain jack grealish. But he doesnt come cheap. The fee is believed to be around £100 million a record for an english club. A deal might even be done in time for the England Star to play in the Community Shield against Leicester City on saturday. The £100 million Transfer Fee would surpass the £89 million Manchester United paid tojuventus in the signing of Paul Pogba in 2016. And christian eriksen has visited the inter milan Training Ground for the first time since suffering a cardiac arrest during denmarks opening match at the euros, earlier this summer. Inter say hes doing well and is in excellent physical and mental health. Eriksen had a heart starting device fitted in the days after the match with finland. Great to see him back with his Team Mates. Thats all the sport for now. Lets recap on our main story that the government has given the Go Ahead for 16 and 17 year olds across the uk to be given the pfizer coronavirus vaccine. It follows a recommendation from Thejoint Committee on vaccination and immunisation, giving its approval for that Age Group to receive a first dose with the aim to offer the second dose some time later. Speaking in Downing Street earlier, they said there have been large changes in the Way Covid 19 is spreading in recent weeks particularly in younger Age Groups. More safety data has become available so it was important to review the advice for the vaccination of young people. In response, the Health Secretary, sajid javid, says the government is accepting the advice and has asked the nhs to prepare to vaccinate those eligible as soon as possible. Earlier, Professor Wei Shen Lim from Thejoint Committee on vaccination and immunisation, set out more background to why the recommendation was made. A particular point to remember throughout all of this, is that there is a very strong influence of age on the risk associated with covid. We know this for adults, we know that older adults are at a higher risk than younger adults, and it is also true for children and young people. Therefore, a 16 year old child would be at higher risk than a 13 year old child, for instance. That means in general terms, the benefits of vaccination are typically greater for older children compared to younger children. That point needs to be borne in mind. The Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Professorjonathan Van Tam, said he wanted 16 and 17 year olds to be able to get their firstjabs, within the next few weeks. Obviously, children are going to start going back to colleges and sixth forms from september and in scotland that will be actually i think slightly earlier in some cases, so there is no time to waste in getting on with this. We have thejcvi advice on starting that initial first dose in 16 and 17 year olds and then i want to proceed as fast as is practically possible, which is not going to be tomorrow. I dont think its likely to be early next week but i can tell you that the nhs has been kept informed of what has been deliberated bijvi and it has been preparing for multiple permutations and options for very many weeks now. I would expect that this programme will start in a very short number of weeks, as opposed to any longer than that. The Health Secretary confirmed earlier that the jabs will be offered to 16 and 17 year olds this month. We 17 year olds this month. Had already been prepari something we had already been preparing for something like this possibly happening and of course we were not to know until there is a decision by the experts but now that they have made that decision on 16 and 17 year olds, we can put that into action and i hope that we can be offering this very soon, certainly this month. The Health Secretary confirmed earlier that the jabs will be New Research has shown that the proportion of the population who are exposed to flooding has risen by 24 since the turn of the century ten times higher than scientists previously thought. Up to 86 Million people are now thought to live in regions that are at risk of flooding. Lets get more on this with our environment correspondent, matt mcgrath. The are some pretty frightening statistics in this. There are. It is one of those studies that has shaken scientists in particular, in what has happened until now, we have seen it floods in recent weeks in China And Germany and other places and we have had angerfrom some people about a lack of warnings and what the governments do, they used Computer Modelling to work out where people are at risk and what is going to happen to them but these models are often a bit flaky sometimes, they are uncertain as to what number of homes will be affected. What the scientist did is they look at satellite images of actual floods across the world, 900 of them, they found that lots more areas and lots more people were affected and about 24 more people were affected by floods in this period in all parts of the world, especially in Asia And Southeast asia, but it is notjust an issue for poorer countries, it affects the whole world. Ill an issue for poorer countries, it affects the whole world. Affects the whole world. Ill be talkin affects the whole world. Ill be talking about affects the whole world. Ill be talking about the affects the whole world. Ill be talking about the key affects the whole world. Ill be talking about the key driver i affects the whole world. Ill be talking about the key driver of| affects the whole world. Ill be i talking about the key driver of this being a Warming Planet or is that too simplistic . Are we talking. It certainly plays a role in this and it drives more and holds more moisture in the atmosphere and so when you get downpours it is much heavier, but also it is about migration. People have moved generally into areas which are flood plains and they are doing this more often than not is economic, and the global population has generally increased by about 18 in the last 15 years but in flood zones it has increased by almost double and they believe that is because flood prone areas are cheaper, cheaper to build on and people move there and especially in india, Pakistan And Bangladesh and other areas where people moved to bigger cities, they are moving to flood prone cities and putting themselves at greater risk as a result. I putting themselves at greater risk as a result. , as a result. I remember interviewing as a result. I remember interviewing a scientist. As a result. I remember interviewing a scientist. A as a result. I remember interviewing a scientist, a specialist as a result. I remember interviewing a scientist, a specialist in as a result. I remember interviewing a scientist, a specialist in flood i a scientist, a specialist in Flood Protection in The Netherlands and the last month, making the point that you can build in areas which are prone to flooding but you have to build a better and build differently and build intelligently and that of course is also just financially more expensive. Absolutely. In countries which dont have those resources, they dont have those resources, they dont have those resources, they dont have those options to build those things, and one of the things the scientists point out is that some of the very poorest countries in the world are not ranked as the one to get the most money from the rich countries to help them with their flood defences and one of the things the scientists hope is that the research will help to balance the equation, balancing up, so that the countries which are suffering the most and have people exposed, will get help to do those early warning systems to build those bits of infrastructure that can protect lives when floods come as they will do increasingly over the next ten years or so. Do increasingly over the next ten years or 50. I5 do increasingly over the next ten years or so years or so. Is this the kind of research years or so. Is this the kind of research that years or so. Is this the kind of research that should years or so. Is this the kind of research that should get i years or so. Is this the kind of i research that should get discussed at cop26 in november . That research that should get discussed at cop26 in november . Research that should get discussed at cop26 in november . That is one of the key arguments, at cop26 in november . That is one of the key arguments, redistribution i at cop26 in november . That is one of the key arguments, redistribution of. The key arguments, redistribution of some money from richer countries to poorer countries, is it going to the right things and helping countries to adapt for those type of floods . We have been stuck with this figure of 100 billion, we have been stuck with this figure of100 billion, it we have been stuck with this figure of 100 billion, it has not been delivered as yet from the richer countries to the poorer countries, and the hope is that will be solved by the time we get to glasgow in november and that as a result of that progress in other fields can be made, but without that Money And Help for those countries, there wont be much progress at cop26. Interesting. Matt mcgrath, thanks forjoining us. The head of the Armed Forces has said that iran must be deterred from carrying out further attacks like the Drone Strike on the Mercer Street tanker. Last thursday a suspected iranian Drone Strike on the Oil Tanker killed a british Security Guard who has been named as Adrian Underwood and the vessels romanian captain. Speaking to the Today Programme general Sir Nick Carter said the iranians had made a big mistake. And that britain should be calling out iran for its very reckless behaviour. Iran has denied involvement. Lets listen to what the head of the Armed Forces had to say on Radio 4s Today Programme. What we need to be doing, fundamentally, is calling out iran for its very reckless behaviour. I mean, they made a big mistake on the attack they did against the Mercer Street Vessel last week, because, of course, that has very much internationalised the State Of Play in the gulf. And i think, you know, we will work out with our allies what is the best way of providing protection. And convoys may not necessarily be the right method. We have used other methods, and we will keep reviewing our way of keeping this happening. But, ultimately, weve got to restore deterrence. Because its behaviour like that which leads to escalation, that could very easily lead to miscalculation. And that would be very disastrous for all the peoples of the gulf and the international community. Earlier we heard from our Security Correspondent, Frank Gardner. There are two separate incidents, not necessarily related. They have taken place in a similar area, off the coast of oman. The first he was referring to was an attack on a tanker with an explosive drone. A so called suicide drone. Britain, the us, Israel And Romania are in No Doubt that iran was behind that. This is a powerful weapon, not something that could be casually launched. It is a heavy weapon, and a fatal attack on shipping. Iran has denied it, but they dont believe that. They are taking it to the un security council. Separately, there was another attack on shipping in the last 24 hours, where a merchant vessel, a much smaller one, was hijacked. That was initially blamed, maritime intelligence sources blamed it on iran and said it was linked to them. But the ship never moved. It was supposed to be steered towards iran and didnt move. The so called 8 or 9 armed men who boarded it left it at three oclock this morning. So, that is a mysterious one. I think that one is more likely linked to the criminal underworld, the Smuggling World that goes on in the gulf. There is a lot of nefarious activities there that happen below the radar, so to speak. But there is a number of moving factors going on here, which are not immediately apparent. The first one is almost certainly an extension of the tit for Tat Shadow War between iran and israel, where israel is attacking iranian shipping that it believes is transporting smuggled oil to syria, which then supplies hezbollah. Israel is trying to sabotage irans nuclear industry. Iran has been attacking shipping, and there has been a number of incidents of this. All of this is making the gulf much more tense, because it is a narrow Choke Point through which about a fifth of the maritime Oil Supplies go through. Wildfires continue to rage in turkey seven days on from the first blaze, criticism of how the government is handling the situation is growing. Fires have also broken out in other parts of the mediterranean. Sancha berg reports. Fires blazing on the hillsides and in the forests near the coastal resorts of bodrum and marmaris. Wildfires have been burning for seven days in turkey and these flames are approaching a power station. Strong winds, low humidity and scorching temperatures. The Weather Conditions that helped the fire spread. They are likely to continue into next week. So far, over 130 fires have been extinguished, but many new ones have broken out. These Spanish Planes are part of the latest effort to get the flames under control. Criticism of the governments handling of the situation is growing. It insists it is doing everything it can. Translation i answer the allegation that we do not accept help coming from abroad. Once again, i would like to reiterate that notjust today, notjust during such a disaster, but it is out of the question to reject offers coming to us because of Pride And Arrogance as our forests are burning. Turkey is not the only country in the region fighting wildfires. In this suburb of northern athens, more than 500 firefighters have been deployed. Houses have burnt down, many have been forced to evacuate, as greece experiences its worst heatwave in 30 years. Translation in the area where the fire broke out, | temperatures reached 45 celsius with less than 10 air humidity. These extreme conditions are due to the intense heatwave that has been affecting our country for the last week. And in israel, firefighters also used planes and helicopters to fight the wildfire in the forests west ofjerusalem. Many fear these extreme scenes will become more commonplace as climate changes. An annual street art festival, nuart, is back on in aberdeen after a years hiatus. Artists from around the world come to the city to add public works of art to the grey walls. Four new works have popped up this year and our Reporter India Grant went out hunting to see if she could find them. Stroke by stroke, splash by splash, the cityscape around aberdeen has been changing. The Nuart Festival invites street artists from across the globe to paint murals on the city streets, bringing pops of colour to the granite city. The artists have added to the artwork of the previous four festivals. This piece has gone up next to a building thats due to be demolished, and it mirrors one in stavanger, norway, where the festival started. It might not be here next year but it is a way to beautify the city. I like the unexpected nature of what the city has become because really if you picked scotland, you would say, definitely glasgow or edinburgh, but you probably really wouldnt go to aberdeen. That, for me, is such a great thing because it really helps to engage a city that might not have the same opportunities that glasgow and edinburgh does. We asked people in aberdeen what they thought of the new pieces. It looks nice. Obviously, aberdeens just declined since covid and all that, a lot of places are shutting down, but its nice that people are making improvements and making it more of a nice destination to come to. It is stunning, really, really nice, yeah. I think it brings a lot of visitors to the city, yeah. Its smart. Its nice to come across them when you arent expecting it. J yeah, like little hidden secrets. Some pieces of art are hard to find well hidden until you stumble across them. Meanwhile, others loom a bit larger. I like that its so. 0ut there . Yeah, i love how random it is but also that theres so much to it. I think its just so cool. I think it is really nice, its definitely really good to see artwork out in public places rather than hidden and kept away in galleries that people might not necessarily visit on the daily i commute or anything like that. I really like it, i wasjust about to take a picture of it, actually, when i saw it. A lot of my friends live outside of aberdeen. They come into aberdeen just to go on the tours. People just walk around and see all of these bits of art, its really good. Sometimes, a fresh lick of paint is all that is needed to liven up a wall, just as aberdeen comes back to normality. Now its time for a look at the weather with stav.
