It has been very dry in scotland so far this summer and the rain maybe welcome. In rural spots dipping down to single figures stop a fine start almost again a case of waiting for the shallows to develop. There will be a feeling Northern Ireland tomorrow, northern and western scotland, a few in the north of england and if you dotted about elsewhere in england and wales. Thursday, friday and into the weekend it is all about the low pressure system. Not as windy as it was last week. Bands of rain and showers will move in. The chance for heavy downpours not raining all the time, there will still be bright and sunny spells around. A breezy picture across the uk and it will turn cooler. On friday that the heavy showers. There could be disrupted downpours around that are thundery on friday and showers will continue into the weekend, slowly fading On Sunday into monday stop temperature is below Average for the time of year. That fits in with the temperatures across north of europe this year. Look at the red across the South East of europe, a dangerous heatwave continuing. Wildfires and 46 in greece yesterday. That is near the record of 48 degrees stop these temperatures will gradually subside as we go into the rest of the week. We do have a video about that. Many thanks indeed. A reminder of our top story. Jason kenny becomes the most decorated olympian of all time was the sprint. On Bbc One now, we joined the Bbc News teams where you are. Good afternoon. Hello, imjane dougall with your latest sports news. Lots of success On The Water earlier today, three medals for Team Gb in the sailing. Including two golds the first from dylan Fletcher And Stuart bithell getting first place in the Mens 49er, then Giles Scott successfully defended his olympic finn title. And there was a Silver for Anna Burnet and John Gimson in the mixed Nacra 17 class. Jess softley was watching. Team gb has never won gold in the Mens 49er class until now. British pair dylan Fletcher And Stuart bithell were well placed for a medal but would need to get ahead of New Zealand to keep their points up. It came down to a thrilling end with the kiwis back in third it was a dramatic race to the finish with germany. Mere centimetres between them. Right on the line great britain win the Medal Race and with it the Gold Medal in tokyo 2020 if that wasnt enough drama for you, Giles Scott was up next in the Mens Finn, a Class Gb has won consecutively for the last six olympics. He didnt have the best of starts but quickly made up time. Giles needed a top five finish to retain his Gold Medal. He has to start overtaking. His experience showed in the final stretch as he sailed into fourth place. Giles scott at the line holds onto the Gold Medal. And into the history books. Jess softley, Bbc News. Two Cycling Medals for Team Gb, with golden Couple Jason and Laura Kenny both adding to their already impressive haul. A Silver in the Team Sprint Forjason means he draws level with Bradley Wiggins on eight medals as britians most decorated olympian. Going into the final against the netherlands, Team Gb had far too much work to do in the final lap. Kenny, along with Ryan Owens and jack carlin, battled but to settle for Silver beaten comprehensively by the dutch team who set a new olympic record. Laura kenny was denied a fifth olympic gold and her Team Pursuit Team were forced into Silver by germany who broke the World Record. Team gb were aiming for the gold, but Katie Archibald, Laura Kenny, Neah Evans and Josie Knight were shocked by a Germany Team who took almost two seconds off their previous World Record time in an emphatic victory. So Silverfor Team Gb, but kenny has the chance of gold in the Omnium Or Madison later in the week. But the Team Gb s reign as olympic Mens Team Pursuit champions ended in a bizarre way as the danish Rider Frederik Madsen crashed into Charlie Tanfield during their semi final. Catching the last british rider means that denmark won the heat, and will race italy in the final. But it also meant that Team Gb were unable to set a fast enough time to qualify for the bronze Medal Race. In the boxing, there was a Silverfor great britains Pat Mccormack after he lost to cubas Roniel Iglesias in the Welterweight Final. Mccormack had been ranked as the top seed, but lost on unanamous points after an impressive performance from iglesias, whos now won three Olympic Medals. Mccormack s Silver means Team Gb has secured a record six medals in the Boxing Events at tokyo. Simone biles has said it meant the world to her to be able to compete again after winning bronze in the beam final. There was no hint of hesitation from the american four time Gold Medalist. She had withdrawn from several events last week saying she wanted to protect her Mental Health and that she was suffering from the twisties which means a gymnast becomes disorintated whilst mid air. Gold went to the 16 year old guan Chen Chen from china. While biles took the bronze and said she was thrilled. It and said she was thrilled. Definitely feels a little sv than it definitely feels a little sweeter than 2016s Bronze Medal. I had to go into training, change my dismount and pulled out all the other finals because i wasnt clear to do them and i didnt think id be clear to do the beam and i was kind of shaking, i was so nervous, but it means the world that i can come out here and compete one more time before this games is over. Team gb s Jack Laugher has taken bronze in the 3 Metre Springboard Diving final. The yorkshireman put On An excellent display with his six dives, securing third place and sealing his Olympic Medal with 87. 75 in his final dive. Laugher took Silver in this event in rio and had been hoping to do one better, but china took the Silver'>Gold And Silver positions. And away from the Olympics Tottenham Striker Harry Kane has again failed to report to the Clubs Training Ground as a Stand Off over his future continues. Kane didnt appear at the scheduled time yesterday for a coronavirus test, after a three Week Break following euro 2020. He is expected back at training by The End of the week. Talks are expected between both parties, but its understood kane believes he has a gentlemans agreement with Chairman Daniel Levy to leave The Club. Manchester city remain keen on signing the 28 year old. And ahead of the decisive third test, british and irish Lions Head Coach Warren Gatland has made a series of changes to his squad to face south africa. Among them, ken owens, aun wynjones, ali price, bundee aki, Josh Adams and Liam Williams all start in cape town. After winning the first test 22 17, the lions were beaten 27 9 by the springboks last weekend setting up a winner takes all clash this weekend. Thats all the sport for now. You can find more On All those stories on the Bbc Sport website. Lets return to the Tokyo Olympics and in diving Jack Laugher claimed a Bronze Medal in the mens 3 metre springboard. Team gb won three medals, two golds including dylan Fletcher And Stuart bithell getting first place in the Mens 49er, then Giles Scott successfully defended his olympic finn title. And there was Silver for Anna Burnet and John Gimson in the mixed Nacra 17 class. We can speak now to ian walker, whos a former two times Olympic Sailor and is now the royal Yachting Association Director of racing. Good to have you with us and thanks forjoining us. Extraordinary would be another word i would use and for dylan and stuart, they came back and had to beat the six time World Champion is, the reigning olympic champions, the Americas Cup holders, and i sat with dylan after the olympics in rio and he told me that he was going to beat them and its taken him five years to do it and he did it in the last metres of the last leg of the last race of the other big games. Gold medals . Ijust| dont think you could be confident. It was light winds, it was tricky, lots of things could go wrong. The challenge was that they had to not just beat the New Zealand boat, but have another boat in between them, so if they were first, the kiwis had to be third in that only happened right at The End. For Giles Scott, it i was comfortable in my mind with giles. He only had to finish fifth out of ten votes in the final, if the hungarian one, and you guessed it, the hungarian one, and giles thought he was over the Starlight And Return to restart and he effectively started in last place and only got the places he needed to guarantee gold at the last turning mark, just before the finishing line, so i was confident about giles before the race but if youd asked me two minutes before The End of the race, i thought he had blown it. That is honest of you. I race, i thought he had blown it. That is honest of you. That is honest of you. I dont. Im glad that is honest of you. I dont. Im glad the that is honest of you. I dont. Im glad the olympics is only i im glad the olympics is only every four years, im glad the olympics is only every fouryears, in im glad the olympics is only every four years, in fact five years this time, because it will take me that long to recover. But its a tribute to a huge amount of hard work and what ive learnt today is the difference between Success And Failure is so narrow and it is so cruel, just a few metres here or there is the difference between being a champion or a medallist or in fourth place, and that is why the national lottery supports us. They want our sailors and our Sports Men to inspire younger sailors, and nothing made me happier today than the pictures of all the kids in Sailing Club is about 630 this morning to watch the race and cheering them on. Obviously if you want to go sailing, youve got to get to some | sailing, youve got to get to some water, that goes without saying, but Giles Scott lives in huntington, miles from The Sea, Stuart Bithell started at Hollingworth Lake near rochdale, Greater Manchester and i grew up hundreds of miles from The Sea just south of london, so you dont have to live by The Sea, you can sail on rivers and canals, and canals, and we have got schoolkids from tottenham competing in Cowes Week this week. It is as accessible as you wanted to be. You find a piece of water, and The Club is always welcoming, whether you are in the docklands of london or the docks of bristol or fortunate enough to be on the coast somewhere, i would encourage people to try sailing. The reason i loved sailing was that i think it has something for everyone, and the reason i still love sailing, even though i am now 51 years old, is that its a sport for all ages and days like today is what will motivate more people to take part in what i believe is the best sport. I must ask you as we have been focusing on the Gold Medal, but there was the Silver in the mixed Macro I7 there was the Silver in the mixed macro 17 class, and mixed sports are having a moment at these olympics. She is an absolute star and was a very good junior sale your and is a key linchpin and as you say, mixed sailing, Mix Sport is growing, the ioc are encouraging it and one of the great things about sailing is that men and women compete together and can compete equally against Each Other and the narca really demonstrates that and we have more mixed sports coming for paris 2024. Thank you very much borisjohnson has met the Opposition Leader of belarus, sviatlana tsikhanovskaya, in Downing Street to discuss human rights, after the head of a group helping people who have fled belarus was found dead near his home in neighbouring ukraine. Another hint of autumn in the weather this morning in a cool start and there were patches of Mist And Fog around and all of that has gone and its a pleasant afternoOn Across much of the uk and if you are dodging the Showers Today, and there arent too many around, some useful doing weather out there which means it is pleasantly warm if you are seeing some sunshine and after that a rather cool start. There are some showers to dodge, particularly across parts of eastern and Southern England there could be rumbles of thunder and a few in scotland towards the north and the west but a greater chance of catching on today compared with yesterday and one or two popping up in Northern Ireland is the day goes on but overall a brighter day and temperatures a bit higher than yesterday with one or two spots getting to 22 celsius. We will keep a few of the showers going on into the evening and most of them will fade away but there will be showers and outbreaks of rain across western scotland. It doesnt look quite as cool tonight but again, away from towns and City Centres there will be places in the countryside that go down into single figures. There is a frontal system out to the west at the moment. Very slowly trying to move in and it will be the focus of some showers around tomorrow and even some outbreaks of rain initially towards the North And North west of scotland, perhaps the most western side of Northern Ireland but as the edges in there will be heavy showers breaking out in Northern Ireland and in scotland towards the North And West, across Northern England some heavier may be sundry downpours to content with so a greater chance of catching them tomorrow compared with today and one or two dotted about elsewhere crossing and wales. Many places stay dry, pleasantly warm and sunny spells but a more significant Weather Change from thursday onwards as the area of low pressure moves in. The wind is picking up around that and around the western coast with just around 40 miles an hour on thursday but turning breezy across the uk with bands of rain or showers gradually edging east during the day and the area of low pressure will be right across us On Sunday so by then they will be few places avoiding some particularly heavy downpours on friday but there could be found in places, possibly disruptive with the risk of flooding and the showery weather continues into the weekend and perhaps fewer showers as we go on through sunday and a bit drier into the start of next week. Giles Scott Right at the last moment crosses the line the points are on his side and Giles Scott at the line holds on to the Gold Medal. For Giles Scott. A watery celebratiOn As he confirmed his place as one of the greatest ever sailors in great britain. Cheering and applause. There was another family celebrating and a quick chance to say their own congratulations. Go and celebrate, you are amazing and we love you. It is a first for us, she never watches his racing and for her to put yourself through that is awesome and we can onlyjust say thank you giles for delivering in The End, although as he said, at least you did not have a heart attack. He managed to regainl and that is really good. I have watched quite a few starts on the I Racecourse but not. With him in the fleet. A strong performance from John Gibson. And this sail was enough to get Anna Burnet and John Gibson a Silver-medal'>Silver Medal. It puts Team Gb at the top of the Medal Table in sailing with the prospect of more tomorrow. Daniela relph, Bbc News. Cyclist jason Kennys Success makes him britains most decorated olympian of all time. And theres been more success for Team Gb today there was Silver for Pat Mccormack in boxing, and bronze forJack Laugher in diving. On the track meanwhile there an extraordinary win for norways Karsten Warholm, who smashed his own World Record in the Mens 400m hurdles. Andy swiss was watching. Chasing a place in history, jason kenny, Alongsidejack Carlin and Ryan Owens going for Team Sprint glory. Britain had won the event at the past three games but this time in the final it was not to be. Jason kenny, straining every sinew in pursuit of the medal but it is gold for the netherlands. Still Silver though and for kenny that meant a place in the record books, his eighth Olympic Medal, six of them gold, making him britains most decorated olympian. It gets harder every time, you do your first olympics and you get caught up in the momentum and to repeat it and then having to do it again and again, it does get harder, to be fair. Earlier there was another medal for Laura Kenny as she took Silver in the Team Pursuit alongside Katie Archibald and Josie Knight, her fifth Olympic Medal as the Family Tally continues to grow. There was another british medal in the box and, although not the colour Pat Mccormack was hoping for. The 26 year old from sunderland is the current Commonwealth Champion but after being edged out in the Welterweight Final by his cuban competitor he had to settle for Silver'>Olympic Silver. In the diving, meanwhile, there was success for Jack Laugher after winning bronze in the springboard he revealed he had considered retiring because of Mental Health issues. This means so much, he said. Simone biles is back. In the gymnastics, the return of a sporting superstar, one week after withdrawing from competition to focus on her Mental Health, Simone Biles was back for the final of the beam and back to near her best. That was enough to put her into the lead and while she later slipped down to bronze, her olympics ended with an emotional comeback and another medal. In the athletics, there was agony for another british hope, Adam Gemili pulling up in his 200m Heat and he later revealed he had injured himself in the warm up and his pain was all too clear. Ijust felt my hamstring go and i was in so much pain. I asked to have it strapped up and to go out there to at least try. You have to try. And. Yeah. But elsewhere perhaps the performance of these games. In the 400 metres hurdles final, Karsten Warholm ripped up the record books. Warholm is going to go and take the win, it is gold for norway, 45. 94. The norwegian smashing his own World Record by the best part of a second, leaving commentators reaching for the superlatives. That performance by Karsten Warholm is possibly the best i have ever seen. I cannot believe the time, i have been asked about the perfect race and i said it did not exist, but this is the closest thing i have ever come. A time and a talent to go down in olympic history. Andy swiss, Bbc News. Lets get some reaction to Team Gbs performance in the cycling from the former olympic champion, sir chris hoy. My Colleague Ben brown asked him whether there was disappointment that it was Silver, not gold, for the team today. I think there are mixed emotions today. The Mens Team Sprint will be delighted with the Silver-medal'>Silver Medal, the dutch team were the hot favourites for that event, but for the women Team Pursuit, Laura Kenny, Katie Archibald and their Team Mates they were hoping for the Gold Medal and they were the hot favourites but the german team broke the World Record and were in a different class today. Jason kenny equals the total Medal Haul of sir Bradley Wiggins to become britains most decorated olympian, how impressive is that . It is hugely impressive and i think that jason does not get enough credit. He has shown longevity, he has shown the ability to cope with pressure and i think he has isjust an understated guy who does not seek any limelight but we should be giving him more plaudits for the amazing achievements he has had three his career and there is hopefully more to come in the ciaran and possibly even the sprint. If he gets one more gold, he surpasses your total haul of Gold Medals. Yeah, he has really surpassed me already with the extra Silver-medal'>Silver Medal and i will give him that. It is amazing to have seen his career, he came on the team shortly before the 2008 Beijing Olympics as this freshfaced youngster who took the responsibility on the pressure on his shoulders so well and he has gone from strength to strength since then and i am proud to be a friend of his and to watch him and to have one of your mates take your record, it is not as bad as that, could be somebody else, i am really pleased for him. Is British Cycling do you think is good as it ever was or are other nations catching up . I think British Cycling is actually better than it ever was and the performances are getting better, they are setting personal bests, they are going faster than they have ever gone before, it is just that other countries are catching up on raising the bar and in some going quicker. You look at the woMens Team Pursuit, that was one of our banker events, one of the events we expected to win gold in and it was a surprise that germany have brought that incredible performance to these games and other events like the Mens Team Pursuit, the Mens Team Sprint, the danish team, the dutch team, they have gone to a new level, it is up to britain to respond, but on the whole, if you look at the way that they have kind of invested in other parts of the sport as well, we have a Gold Medal on the momentum back in, two goals in bmx and there are more medals to come, it is perhaps not the dominance we have seen in the last three or four good to talk to you, thank you for your time. Thank you. Labour says the Governments Policy on international travel is in Total Chaos after proposals for a new Amber Watchlist were abandoned. The list would have allowed holidaymakers to see which countries were in danger of being put on the governments Red List which would mean having to quarantine in a hotel on their return. Travel firms opposed the idea, but the government has denied its made a u turn. Tony bonsignore reports. Holiday makers want to go. The Travel Industry wants to take them. The problem is there are concerns over covid cases in countries like spain and greece. The idea of an Amber Watchlist was to warn travellers about those countries currently on the Amber List but are in danger of turning red. If that happens, it would mean a full stay in a Quarantine Hotel at the travel s own expense. The idea was discussed by ministers but has now been ditched. We have looked at the various options. On balance we think the system has to be simple enough. It is difficult to tread a careful balance but that is what we are trying to do. We definitely want to open up travel. Airlines are relieved. It is a victory for common sense. The last thing we needed was category and a traffic light system. Passengers need as much clarity as possible. They need to know they are not facing rules that will change overnight. Labour is calling for more transparency. The current system is not fit for purpose. We have seen that in no Way Portugal was treated in france was treated where they created a new category for the Amber List. That creates more confusiOn And means the travelling public does not have confidence to book ahead. What we have been calling for is a simple system that says it is either safe to go and should be on the green list or not safe to go which means ought to be on the Red List. This latest row comes amid an intense debate in government over international travel. Many are cautious but others are making it known they want to open up more quickly to protectjobs. A difficult balance for the government to strike. The next big announcement will come in the next you days when we get the latest update to the travel list. The decision many Holiday Makers will be following closely. We get the latest update to the travel list. Oov Borisjohnson meets the Opposition Leader of Belarus Borisjohnson meets the Opposition Leader of belarus after one of the countrys athletes at the olympics sought sanctuary in a foreign embassy. Borisjohnson is meeting the Opposition Leader of belarus, sviatlana tsikhanouskaya, in Downing Street to discuss human rights. Their talks come a day after one of the countrys olympic athletes sought sanctuary in tokyo, after defying orders to fly home early because she feared for her safety. The opposition in belarus has faced a brutal crackdown since president lukashenkos disputed Re Election a year ago. Richard galpin reports. This athlete from belarus, krystsina tsikhanouskaya, now in her second day taking sanctuary here in the Polish Embassy. The international olympic committee said this morning she was in good spirits. She reassured us once again she is feeling safe and secure. I believe there is a call going on this morning with her as well. Together with the relevant authorities and the competent organisations, she is planning herfuture. OppositiOn Activists in belarus say no one who speaks out against the repressive belarus government is safe, not even olympic athletes. The belarus president , alexander lukashenko, who has been in powerfor 27 years has been ruthless in suppressing any dissent in the country. Those who try to protest face beatings and arrest by the authorities. It has led to many leaving the country. Today, the belarus Opposition Leader, sviatlana tsikhanouskaya, has been holding talks with the Prime Minister here in Downing Street. In another development today, belarus activist, vitaly shishov, has been found dead in the ukrainian capital, kyiv. Hed been hanged here in this park. Its reported belarus Special Forces were in the area. Richard galpin, Bbc News. Ms tsikhanouskaya said the meeting with borisjohnson had been a positive one and spoke to the press about the Culture Of Fear that Opposition Activists are facing. Everybody who is in belarus and are in exile have to take care of themselves because we see that The Regime, you are not saved from anything, to reach you if they want to do something. But we have to understand how to act if we think we are being persecuted, if we are under threat, who to call, where to go, just to take care. Who to call, where to go, just to we cannot take care of everyone. Who to call, where to go, just to everybody has to be responsible for his safety. As for me, i understand that i can disappear at any moment. I understand this. But i shall do what i am doing. I Cant Stop because i feel responsibility for the future the same as all of the Belarusians Afighting at the moment feel that responsibility. I know that even if i disappear one day, this movement will continue without me. Belarusian olympic sprinter, Krystina Timanovskaya Who Is Set to fly to warsaw after receiving a humanitarian visa at the Polish Embassy in tokyo has been speaking to the bbc. Belarusian officials tried to force the sprinter onto a Plane Home after she criticised the teams coaches but she was granted a visa to enter poland yesterday. She told bbc s newshour that she was concerned for her family back home and that her criticism of the belarusian olympic authorities were not political. She also said she loves her country and did not want to betray belarus. She said she was warned that she faces punishment if she ever returns to belarus following her refusal to follow team orders. The number of Covid I9 deaths in the uk is slowly rising, according to the latest figures from the Office For National Statistics. The number of deaths registered in the uk in the week Ending 23july 2021 was 11,160 which was 8 above the five year Average. 392 involved covid 19 124 more than were reported in the previous week. Scotlands First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is to set out Plans Today for the lifting of most legal covid 19 restrictions in a statement to msps. The whole of scotland is currently in level zero of the virus alert system, and the First Minister has said she is hopeful of going further on 9 August which could see physical distancing rules relaxed, the return of Office Working and larger crowds at events. Drug deaths in england and wales have reached a Record High new data from the Office For National Statistics show that more than 4,500 deaths were recorded in 2020 thats the highest number since records began 28 years ago. Last week, figures for scotland showed the country continued to record more Drug Related Deaths than any other country in europe. Well, joining me now is Dr Emily Finch Vice Chair of the Addictions Faculty at the royal college of psychiatrists. These figures make grim reading. What do you think is going on . It is Im Ortant what do you think is going on . It is important to what do you think is going on . It 3 important to remember these statistics all represent someone who died, someones brother, partner. We continue to see a rise in opiate deaths, a group of people who started using heroin when they were younger and as they get older they start to become a more sensitive to the effects of overdose. So we are seeing that many of the deaths involve heroin but they also involve other drugs like benson dopamine, like some valium drugs are a painkiller which is increasingly abused. We also see a picture where there are young people dying in the north of england in the south and that fits with the figures about heroin use. We know more people use heroin use. We know more people use heroin in the north than the south. We are also seeing a picture where Drug And Alcohol treatment services have been very significantly cut over the last ten years. And this has been accompanied by this rise in deaths. So we are in a position for this group of people have had a double whammy. They are getting older, they need more support and they are not getting it. They are not getting it. Twice as many deaths they are not getting it. Twice as many deaths were they are not getting it. Twice as many deaths were among i they are not getting it. Twice as many deaths were among men | they are not getting it. Twice as i many deaths were among men than women. Why do you think that is . Especially for opiate use more men use drugs and women. That has certainly been the findings for the past ten or 20 years. We are not entirely sure why that is the case. It may also be that what men are doing is using more lethal drugs, using heroin which does tend to kill you in overdose and women are using different drugs. We sometimes think its because we dont attract women into treatment but these figures perhaps present a different picture because of course many of these people were not in Treatment Rb dont know whether they were in treatment. I5 dont know whether they were in treatment dont know whether they were in treatment. Is such a complicated icture, treatment. Is such a complicated picture. Isnt treatment. Is such a complicated picture, isnt it . Treatment. Is such a complicated picture, isnt it . What treatment. Is such a complicated picture, isnt it . What more i treatment. Is such a complicated picture, isnt it . What more can | treatment. Is such a complicated i picture, isnt it . What more can be done . You have touched on this but what more can be done to try to improve the situation . What more can be done to try to improve the situation . These are a urou improve the situation . These are a arou who improve the situation . These are a group who need improve the situation . These are a group who need more improve the situation . These are a group who need more treatment i improve the situation . These are a | group who need more treatment for physical and Mental Health and the way Drug And Alcohol services have been provided in the past two years, the amount of support has been very significantly reduced and also the links with Mental Health and other nhs services are now quite poor. So it is quite difficult for people to get the support for the range of multiple problems they often have. We also know there is an antidote to opiate overdoses which has been implemented across the country but it could be done better. And if drug services were providing a more comprehensive care there would probably be more people who had access to it. You probably be more people who had access to it probably be more people who had access to it. You know as well as i do there are access to it. You know as well as i do there are so access to it. You know as well as i do there are so many access to it. You know as well as i do there are so many different i do there are so many different demands on the public purse at the moment. Its partly about skills in the sector, its partly about how this group are perceived in the health service, they are various stigmatised as a group they are very stigmatised as a group and are always at the bottom of the pile and receiving funding. Some of them are in the criminaljustice system and need to receive the best possible care when they present there as well. So some of it is about funding but its not all about funding. Thank you so much forjoining us. Government forces in afghanistan are battling to stop the taliban from taking control of lashkar gah, the capital of Helmand Province, where british troops were stationed for many years. The militants are reported to have captured most of the city. The Talibans Assault in helmand is part of a major offensive across the country following the departure of american troops. Our chief international correspondent, Lyse Doucet has the latest from the capital kabul. These are images which will not be easy to see four british soldiers who patrolled in the same streets for years and on the same squares In The City the taliban had been filming themselves there and in the besieged capital of Helmand Province the Police Headquarters coming under assault. The afghan Special Forces who have been helicoptered in to reinforce Special Forces on the ground soldiers on the ground have been backed up by afghan War Planes which have been bombing targets trying to push the taliban back. The united states as well in the last weeks of the united states led Nato Mission in afghanistan, and nearly 20 year long mission, the united states is also using its Air Power to try to support afghan forces. This is a really, really tough fight. As you mentioned, most of Helmand Province and most of the districts across rural afghanistan are taliban hands. Most of the city of Lashka Gha is in taliban hands. Theyre desperate to Siege A Provincial Capital which will give them not just provincial capital which will give them notjust territory but provincial capital which will give them not just territory but a psychological boost but the word from the afghan forces is world is not over yet. Borisjohnson has said levelling up the poorest parts of the uk should start with tackling crime. One of the areas worst affected Is Rhyl in north wales, where serious violence rose for four years until the first coronavirus lockdown. The town has some of the most deprived neighbourhoods in wales, coronavirus lockdown. The town has some of the most deprived neighbourhoods in wales, and is hoping to win new government funding. Our social affairs correspondent, michael buchanan, has been to visit. Weekend patrol in the most violent neighbourhood in wales. He said he was going to punch me. I did not step forward. Were not getting anywhere now. As covid restrictions ease, there is fear here, as elsewhere, that serious crime will increase. Cutting crime is the centrepiece of the government s efforts to reduce regional inequalities. Doing so here in rhyl is not straightforward. Tackling crime doesn tjust mean flooding the area with extra police officers. For me it would be using the Levelling Up Money to tackle the underlying causes of crime. Rhyl, and certainly the Town Centre and the west part of rhyl does have long standing issues with unemployment. For me, those issues of Social Deprivation are inextricably linked to the violent crime issues that we have. Violent crime for a long time in rhyl was linked to the night time economy. Assaults and beatings and stabbings, a consequence of drinking too much, often at the weekend. In recent years, the nature of violence here has changed dramatically. Natasha harper has intimate knowledge of crime locally. Not only does she hear about it through her charity work, she was a victim of domestic abuse herself. There was beatings, theft of jewellery to sell for drink. Lots of emotional abuse. Broken bones, cuts. He was standing over me with a chair and i knew if i couldn t get away he would have killed me. Natasha s charity delivers furniture to those in need. This time, another woman fleeing domestic abuse, which is a major driver of crime in rhyl. Violence however is also being imported to the town. This Car Chase ended with the murder of a local man as gangs from nearby cities fought for control of rhyl s drug trade. Crime just gives the place a bad name and reputational issue, isn t it, for us all. That s probably been one of the key barriers we ve had to address in terms of getting the private sector and getting confidence in the town of rhyl. Millions of pounds have been spent in recent years, reviving rhyl s tourist facilities. The challenge now is to make the town an attractive place to live and work, notjust visit. Michael buchanan, Bbc News, rhyl. More medals in tokyo. I can bring you the news that Keely Hodgkinson has wOn A Silver-medal'>Silver Medal in the women s 800 Metres on the track, and it is significant. There she is on the left hand side. She is only 19 and is the youngest member of Team Gbs and is the youngest member of Team Gb s athletic squad, and has come away with a Silver-medal'>Silver Medal in the women s 800 Metres. Many congratulations to her. Now it s time for a look at the weather with nick. Many places with a dry afternoOn And sunny spells after a cool start to the day feeling pleasantly warm in the day feeling pleasantly warm in the sunshine. We are still dodging a few heavy and perhaps thundery showers affecting parts of the midlands, eastern and Southern England, but not many for wales and Northern England with a few in Northern Ireland but overall a brighter day compared to yesterday and one or two in scotland, especially in the North And West. Temperatures a bit higher than yesterday so if few spots reaching 22 celsius across parts of Northern England and some of the showers will continue into the evening and then fade away while overnight most places are dry and there will be outbreaks of rain affecting North Western parts of scotland and it has been very dry this summer, so some of the rain it may be welcome. Temperatures lower than this in rural spots so some places starting tomorrow in single figures. Plenty of sunshine from The Word Go but we will see showers for Northern Ireland, northern and western scotland, more in northern England Tomorrow compared with today and if you elsewhere in england and wales but some heavy, thundery downpours. Hello, this is Bbc News with rebecca jones. The headlines can they carry it all the way to the finish . Right on the line, great britain win the Medal Race and with it the Gold Medal in tokyo 2020. Drug deaths in england and wales reach a Record High. The lives of more than 4,500 people were lost last year. Time to bask in some olympic glory. Beth shriever picked up a Gold Medal in the women s bmx final on friday and earlier she spoke to my colleague Victoria Fritz and started by asking her whether she expected to win gold in tokyo. I knew i had potential, i was a hard worker, but my main goal throughout this whole Career And Training was to just enjoy myself. I said in the future when i am old and grey i want to look back at this time in my life and say i had the best time ever and i was happy, and so for that is what is happening. So i couldn t have asked for anything better. We have words going across the bottom of you. You have had yourfunding cut, a double Leg Break before you got to this stage. It is unbelievable what you have had to overcome in the last few years, and money is notoriously difficult for a number of sports and the athletes that play them. What loops did you have to go through to get to the World Stage . With my double Leg Break, ijust had to be patient with that, take a lot of time out. I think it was almost two years i was out with that. But we stayed positive, never give up and ended up having a full recovery. I still have physio for my leg now. With regards to the funding, we ended up doing some crowdfunding to get me to the world cups for the olympic qualificatiOn And to pay for a really good coach at the time as well. That was able to get me there and get me qualified for the games, and after the period when the games was fast approaching, British Cycling came to me and saw my potential and wanted to give me the opportunity of being a full time athlete. Now, for the past two or three years, i have been fully backed by Uk Sport and the national lottery so i am very grateful for their support now. Without their support over the past years i wouldn t be in the best shape i am in now and i am very grateful. Bmx is absolutely thrilling to watch, loads of people got really involved in the sport. It must be pretty terrifying to do. The likes of Connor Fields coming off the course On A stretcher, you mentioned your double Leg Break. How do you mentally prepare for the danger of being on the course . I think i can speak on behalf of quite a few bmx athletes, i think we have to kind of put it aside and obviously keep our training pretty consistent so we can know how to save ourselves from getting in the scary positions. I think the main thing isjust kind of moving on, trying to keep a smooth lap, but with Bmx Anything can happen. I think we all know it is inevitable that you will crash. Yes, it can be scary at times but i think for most of us it is just about putting it to one side and focusing on your lap. If you overthink it, it can all go wrong. Putting it aside and focusing on yourself. You have done nothing short of create history here, you are the only woman in the camp and have the opportunity to shape the sport, what do you want to do with your influence . I want to inspire more women to get involved, especially in male dominated sport. Hopefully i have proven you can do it if you can commit and never give up. Especially as a woman in a male dominated sport. I hope to inspire other people, not just women but men and boys, this port is amazing and the community around it is incredible. Already i have heard we have sell out sessions at tracks now, which isn t saying, it has only been a few days since we got our medals. To see an influx of new riders is absolutely amazing so hopefully we can keep inspiring people to get involved and get more riders on the bmx track. I wildfires fuelled by high temperatures and strong winds are sweeping parts of greece, turkey and lebanon, forcing the evacuation of thousands. More turks and foreign tourists have been evacuated from southern coastal resorts. Nearly 60 Forest Fires have broken out in Western Greece in the last 24 hours. Russell trott reports. Seeking safety on The Seashore. Farmers take advantage after the tourists fled turkey s southern resorts to bring down their cattle from the hills, where wildfires continue to burn uncontrollably in the high temperatures and scorching wins. Turkey has experienced its worst fires in a decade. Large swathes of forest completely destroyed. The government is facing criticism for its handling of the crisis. 200 separate blazes have been extinguished but it has had to request help from its neighbours. Russia, iran, Azerbaijan And Ukraine have already sent Firefighting Aircraft to assist. More firefighting from the air elsewhere in southern europe. Now it s time to take a look at some of the stories across the uk from the bbc s newsrooms. The bbc has discovered that an increasing number of patients across the west of england are either borrowing from friends and family, or using their Life Savings to fund private healthcare. Delays for treatment on the nhs are a big factor, and hospital Waiting Lists for operations in england are now a 100 times higher than before the pandemic. Here s our health correspondent, matthew hill. I was stood on the roof. I d just been changing a tile. I stepped onto the ladder to come down and i grabbed onto the window to brace myself. Unfortunately the window opened, swung out on me, and i was going to fall off the ladder so at the last second ijumped back in self preservation, really, and landed on the tarmac down here on both my heels. Andy langford from cheddar is lucky to have escaped withjust a ruined hip. There are now 700 patients in somerset waiting more than 52 weeks for operations. So faced with at least a year s delay, andy felt he had no choice but to go private. Booked in within two weeks of the initial Phone Call and had the surgery a week later. Could you afford it . Not without help. So some support from a family member, but it s not a trivial amount of money. Its it s estimated Waiting List could reach 10 milliOn As patients reluctant to seek help during the pandemic come forward. Before the pandemic, nationally there were only 1600 patients waiting more than 52 weeks for any treatment. That went up to 430,000 in march this year. Increasing numbers of patients are going private. One of those self pay people is elainejones from bristol who spent her family s savings On A hip replacement. We ve seen an uplift in demand of around 20 since the pandemic really took hold and alongside that, the Self Pay Market is also growing and industry analysts anticipate that market will increase by in the region of 10 to 15 over the coming year. There are some signs the nhs is beginning to address the Waiting Lists. In bath, north east somerset, swindOn And wiltshire, this march there were as many as 3,900 patients waiting more than 52 weeks for their operations. Now, pre pandemic, there were only 120. But since march, the clinical Commissioning Group has managed to reduce this number by 34 . So how have they done that . Running extra sessions at weekends. Our providers are also working collaboratively together so there have been some joint Waiting List initiatives really targeting children s waits, particularly children waiting for Ent Procedures and oral surgery, and our three providers, the iuh, Great Western and salisbury, have done some fantastic work around intensively operating on large numbers of children over Bank Holiday periods. But for the thousands who simply can t get the money together, it seems like there s a long and sometimes painful wait ahead. Matthew hill, bbc points west. The number of Dog Attacks on Farm Animals has surged during the pandemic. The annual rural crime report from the nfu, published today, shows the cost of Livestock Thefts fell, as thieves kept away. But insurers say the increase in Pet Ownership and countryside visits during lockdown has led to more farmers reporting injured livestock. Our Environment Correspondent David Gregory Kumar has been at a farm in leek in staffordshire for us this morning. So, overall, yes, rural crime is down according to the nfu mutual survey. But, of course, plenty of farmers are still affected by rural crime, and they can still feel basically under siege sometimes. We are here On A Sheep And Bee farm just outside leek in staffordshire. With me is the farmer robin smith. Robin, tell me how many animals have you had stolen recently . In the last two years, we ve had about 20 stolen, and i m just about fed up of it now. I just don t know what else we can do. We can t do much more security for the sheep, because they are fenced in and they have got padlocks on the gate. And then they still come and take them. And how much of a financial dent is it in the business . It is a big financial dent in the business. Because the sheep are dear, then you have got to try and replace them. And it sjust a headache, really, all the time. What about insurance . You can claim on the insurance, but then again the insurance will go up another 10 . So we are not really gaining anything. I know you have also had trouble with another rural crime. That s people letting their dogs off the lead and then attacking your sheep. Yes, we have had that twice in the last two years, killing all the lambs and sheep. But you go and see the owner and we just get nothing out of that, so there again, the insurance again. And what do the police say about all of this . That police are not really interested at all. Theyjust give you a rural crime number. They come out and see you and that s about it, really. They are not too bothered. Robin smith, thank you very much for talking to us this lunchtime. Overall, yes, the numbers are down, but the farmers affected can still feel, as i said, like they are under siege and there is little they can do about it. And the worry is, if it was The Endemic that was keeping the numbers low, once we start to lift restrictions and people come back into the countryside, rural crime is only going to go back up again. A woman from wrexham who suffered 96 burns in a Coach Crash in 2013 is celebrating after graduating from university with a degree in physiotherapy. Catrin pugh was given just a one in 1,000 chance of survival. She now wants to help others as matthew richards reports. Catrin pugh is all smiles having graduated with a first Class Degree in physiotherapy from king s college london, an achievement against the odds. In 2013, she was returning from a Gap Year at a Ski Resort in the french alps when her Coach Crashed On A steep mountain road. The driver was killed and his passengers survived, although Catrin Pugh was pulled from the wreckage, the soles of her feet were the only parts of her body that weren t burned. I woke up in hospital and we were going through those early stages of recovery, my parents used to say, we just want you to be happy and we don t care what you do so the fact that i get to do things like go to university is reallyjust an extra, amazing thing and it s something that i definitely don t take for granted. Over eight months in hospital, catrin had operations and countless hours of care to help a recovery and it is that which set her on the path to studying physiotherapy. The nurses and surgeons saved my life. But in my eyes the physiotherapists gave me back mobility, walking, to use my hands and that made a massive difference to me, so the inspiration of my physiotherapists made me want to be able to do the same for others. Catrin s family has been by her side throughout but they say the determination to succeed is all hers. She always said she would try to use this as a positive stage in her life and she hasn t seen it as a backwards step. In the early days obviously she was very down about things but after the first couple of years, she had that single mindedness to think, i m going to achieve something in my life now. The crash in 2013 changed catrin s life in many ways but following her recovery, she is embarking on her nextjourney to support others. A walrus known as wally who has been spending time in and around the isles of scilly off the Southwest Coast of cornwall has been sighted off County Waterford in ireland. Wildlife experts hope he is making his way back to the arctic, where his species is more commonly found, after arriving off scilly injune. Wally the walrus, thought to be about four years old, has travelled about four thousands kilometres along the coast of western europe, including spain, wales and cornwall since march. Experts had been wondering how to keep him out of a harbour where he had sunk a number of boats by trying to clamber aboard and rest. Now it s time for a look at the weather with nick miller. Another hint of autumn in the weather this morning and quite a cool start out there and there were patches of Mist And Fog but all of that has gone and it s a pleasant afternoOn Across much of the uk and if you are dodging the Showers Today and there are not too many around, there are times of useful doing weather out there and it s pleasantly warm if you see the sunshine but after that a rather cool start. There are a few showers to dodge critically across parts of central, eastern and Southern England and there could be heavy ones and there will be a few in scotland to the North And West but a greater chance of catching on today compared with yesterday and one or two popping up in Northern Ireland as the day goes off, and temperatures are a bit higher than yesterday and there will be one or two spots getting 222 celsius. We will keep a showers going into the evening and most will fade away but there will be further showers and outbreaks of rain across North Western parts of scotland as the night goes on. It doesn t look as cool tonight but away from towns and City Centres there will be many places in the countryside that do dip into single figures. There is a frontal system out to the west at the moment, very slowly trying to move in and it will be the focus of some more showers around tomorrow and even some outbreaks of rain, initially towards the North West of scotland, but as it edges in there will be heavy showers breaking out in Northern Ireland and in scotland on the west, across Northern England, some heavy and thundery downpours to contend with so a greater chance of catching them tomorrow compared with today and one or two dotted about elsewhere across england and wales. Many places staying dry, pleasantly warm, sunny spells, but a Gift And Change on the way from thursday onwards in the area of low pressure moving in. The wind is picking up around that around the western coast. Showers edging eastwards during the day in this area of low pressure will be a cross on friday, so by then there will be few places avoiding some particular heavy downpours on friday and it could be thundery in places with a possible disruptive risk of flooding, perhaps fewer showers going through sunday and a little bit going through sunday and a little bhdw going through sunday and a little bit dry into the start of next week.
