Its believed Krystsina Tsimanouskaya plans to go to warsaw tomorrow. And the head of an organisation Helping Belarussians who have fled abroad has been found dead In Kiev. Vitaly shiskov ran the belarusian house in ukraine. Fighting is raging in Helmand Province as taliban militants and afghan government Forces Battle for control of the southern city of Lashka Ga. Criticism from Uks Opposition Labour party, but praise from within the Travel Industry, as the Uk Government abandons plans for an amber watchlist of countries for International Travel. And firefighters in helicopters are battling wildfires raging for a seventh day near southern coastal resorts in turkey. A warm welcome to tokyo and what a momentous day its been. One of the greatest races in Olympics History took place this morning. Norways Karston Warholm won the gold in the mens 400 Metre Hurdle in a World Record time of 45. 94 seconds. Its the first time anyone has run the event in less than 46 seconds. The 25 year old was overwhelmed with his win, ripping his shirt in delight. He was ahead in the early stages, but a strong challenge by Americas Rai Benjamin propelled him to smash his own World Record to gain gold. In the Sailing Team Gbs has won double Gold Medals in both the mens 49 er and Finn Classes. Giles scott earned the nations second olympic sailing gold, shortly after dylan Fletcher And Stuart bithell clinched the Mens 49er gold. In Team Pursuit cycling, germany have taken gold, after dominating the race from the start and achieving a new World Record. Great britains women have taken silver. And in the past few minutes Team Gbs Jason Kenny has won a record equalling eighth Olympic Medal. Taking silver. And today marks the return of american gymnast Simone Biles. Shes back on the beam in her last chance of winning a medal. And herfirst and her first appearance since pulling out of the vault last week. The star of the Rio Games pulled out of other disciplines due to a dangerous Mental Block gymnasts can experience called the twisties. They sort of lose their sense of where they are at in the air, can be incredibly dangerous. In the final event for womens gymnastics, biles will compete alongside all around Champion And Team mate suni lee. Well bring you the very latest when we know more. Well, lets go back to that historic win by norways Karston Warholm. And we can discuss it all with someone who knows a thing or two about breaking World Records over one lap. Im very pleased to say we can speak to michaeljohnson who won olympic gold over 400 metres and 200 metres. Was that one of the most outstanding athletic performances youve ever seen today . Notjust by karston but Rai Benjamin too . Definitely, Karsten Warholm has been on fire all season, broke the World Record that had stood since 1992 in his first phase of the season. We knew then tokyo would be great because benjamin came close to the World Record also at the us olympic trials. Karsten warholm said when he broke the World Record in may it would take another World Record to win olympic gold In Tokyo and it did. Into perspective, he broke the World Record by seven tenths of a second, that is unheard of. World records are typically broken by hundredths of a second. It was an impressive, impressive performance. Many people are describing it as the perfect race is there such a thing . Perfect race is there such a thin . ~. , perfect race is there such a thin . , perfect race is there such a thin . , thing . Most athletes will tell you there is not thing . Most athletes will tell you there is not. Im thing . Most athletes will tell you there is not. Im sure thing . Most athletes will tell you there is not. Im sure he thing . Most athletes will tell you there is not. Im sure he would. Thing . Most athletes will tell you | there is not. Im sure he would be able to dissect that race and say there were things he did better. I broke World Records and i can tell you that none of those were perfect. From a Spectator Stand Point and what we were treated to, it was the perfect place for us to get a chance to watch, with benjamin and Karsten Warholm both going for the World Record, Underthe Warholm both going for the World Record, under the World Record. An incredible race, we knew the 400 Metre Hurdles on the Mens Side would be one of the most impressive and entertaining races of the games. Not to take the focus off those guys but we are not done, the womens 400 Metre Hurdles could see another World Record as well, as that has been traded back and forth. These are not soft World Records, ones that are broken every couple of years, these have not been broken for 20 or 30 years and now the athletes in those events are inspired by one another and we are seeing those World Records come down. It seeing those World Records come down. ,. ,. ,. , down. It it was entertaining today, art of it down. It it was entertaining today, part of it was down. He has been around for a while, a two time world champion, i while, a two time world champion, now olympic champion and World Record holder, there is not much more that he can do. In terms of being a superstar of the sport, that is up to the sport to help these athletes. I have said from the last two years since bolt retired, there are no personalities in the sport. Athletics, the leadership sits back and waits for the athletes to create and waits for the athletes to create a persona for themselves and then create some fun following that can then come into the Sport And Help then come into the Sport And Help the sport. That is the job of the sport itself, world athletics, the governing body, needs to be proposing people like Karsten Warholm and shelley and fraser pryce, scintillating The Other day. We saw the amazing high of The Other day were the two athletes assured gold. Those are the two of the biggest personalities in the sport. It is a lack of promotion of the great athletes in the sport and Karsten Warholm is certainly one of them. Already a huge star in norway but to be a Usain Bolt Type Star is difficult. You look at Karsten Warholms social media, very dynamic and engaging and it can do much more. ~. , , and engaging and it can do much more. ~. ,. , and engaging and it can do much more. ~. ,. ,. , more. The only advances we have is the footwear and you want it to allow you to be able to be the best topic that you can. I was famous for wearing the gold Shoes, there is a lot of technology in those issues that i personally requested from nikkei because i felt that the previous footwear was limiting my ability to run around the way i would normally do so. Nike. If we get to a point where the Shoes are allowing the athletes to be superhuman, do something they cannot naturally do, that would be a problem. I do not think we are there yet. What we are seeing with the footwear as well as the tracks, they are allowing the athletes to be as good as they are and taking away limitations that footwear or tracks may be actually imposing on the athletes. This is a fast track, new surface by mondo designed to reduce the friction when the athlete steps in the track. It is not making the athlete faster but it is reducing the Drag And Friction that would slow an athlete down otherwise, the same thing with the Shoes. Same thing with the Shoes. There has been so much controversy around coronavirus, the lack of spectators. Athletes say they are just delighted to compete, but what is your sense of it . What have been your magic moments . I have said from the have been your magic moments . I have said from the very have been your magic moments . I have said from the very beginning, have been your magic moments . I he said from the very beginning, the athletes, they have been delayed for athletes, they have been delayed for a year. To have it hanging over their heads that this olympics may not even happen, they are just thrilled the last several years of training for a 2020 olympics is actually happening, albeit one year late. Of course the athletes would love to have fans there, that is part of it, but at the core of this is about athletes being able to engage in competition like they are used to and they are delighted to do so. It is a strange thing about the olympics, we have seen some athletes, overwhelming favourites not able to produce the type of performances we expect. But some Spectacular Performances as well. A bit of a mixed bag. Spectacular performances as well. A Bit Ofa mixed bag. I Spectacular Performances as well. A bit of a mixed bag. I think what we are also seeing is depending on athletes and their conditions or restrictions there may have been in their particular country with regard to Coronavirus And Access to training, it has made the preparation for this a bit unpredictable for many athletes. So some athletes have thrived and some have suffered. The last year that we have suffered. The last year that we have all been through. Have all been through. Thank you, michael. Here injapan, its notjust those World Records making headlines. There are reports that hospitals are now at 70 capacity following the sharp rise in covid cases. Japan is recording more than 10,000 new infections every day nationwide. Lets cross to my Colleague Mariko oi in shinbashi, a district of tokyo. We have just had the Infection Figures through. But what about i hospitals . We are starting to hear from doctors and medical experts saying the Hospital System is definitely starting to get overwhelmed. There has also been lots of anger among the japanese public after the government asked them to stay at home unless their symptoms are really severe in order to secure the bed for those who need intensive care. Of concern about if your condition is considered mild but you have difficulties breathing, if your conditions get worse which you then get admitted to hospital . Would there actually be enough beds . People In Tokyo still remember what happened in osaka back in may when about 18 people died at home without being admitted to the hospital. That is what people are concerned would happen here as well. As you said, we continue to see the surge in covid cases, Todays Light is just over 3700, but across the Country Number above 10,000. Japan could get another medal in the football. Simone biles hasjust completed, waiting for her score, the flashes when she came the was extraordinary. The amount of attention on her. We will bring you more, there competing on the final of the beam, competing for the first time in a week. The belarusian sprinter Krystsina Tsimanouskaya remains at the Polish Embassy In Tokyo, and its believed she plans to go to warsaw on wednesday, after poland granted her a humanitarian visa. She refused an order to return home from the olympics after criticising her coaches. In london today, the exiled belarusian Opposition Leader Svetlana Tsikhanouskaya is meeting the british prime minister, Boris Johnson, in Downing Street today. In an interview with the bbc s today programme, she said what happened to the sprinter highlighted how the regime was using sport as a weapon of propaganda. Now krystsina is safe and shes going to get Polish Visa and be as a refugee in poland. And, you know, her situation is not unique, i think, because the hijack of protasevich has the same nature. She is criticised sport officials, so tsimanouskaya was supposed to be punished for pure disloyalty. But we really thankful for the whole world that they supported her at that moment. And the government of tokyo and International Olympic Committee that they took care of her and now she is safe. Nobody in belarus can feel safe. Its a pity, but thats true. I heard that her husband left the Country And Kgb people came to her parents but, you know, its our reality. In related news, police In Kyiv say an activist who heads an ngo helping his compatriots who have fled repression in belarus has been found dead. Vitali shishov, head of the belarusian house in ukraine, wentjogging In Kyiv on Monday Morning but did not return and could not be reached on his mobile phone. Here in the uk, labour has urged the government to provide the full data behind its Coronavirus Travel restrictions system, after ministers scrapped plans for an Amber Watchlist, which would have indicated which countries were likely to move to red. The party accused the conservatives of being in Total Chaos over Border Policy, and said Maximum Clarity was needed rather than Reckless U Turns by Downing Street. Simonjones reports. Getting away from it all, but safely. The british government, like administrations Around The World, has been grappling with how to allow International Travel in an age of covid. People want to go abroad, i understand how much people plan, prepare for the Summer Holidays, but weve also got to remember that this is still a dangerous virus and that we must try and stop variants coming in and must stop Importing Variants from abroad, so we have to have a balanced approach. On monday, britain opened its borders to people from the us and most of the Eu Whove been fully vaccinated, but further changes are also being looked at. The government has been using a Traffic Light System for travel. People can visit a green country. When they return, they need to take a Covid Test before departure, and another test once theyre back. On returning from an amber country, people who are fully vaccinated dont need to isolate. But entering the uk from a red country will involve quarantining in a hotel for ten days. The government had been considering an Amber Watchlist, flagging up countries at risk of moving to red. But thats now been abandoned, following opposition from some mps. A decision welcomed by the Travel Industry. We already have a hugely complex system, a Traffic Light System that governs International Travel and i think most people are struggling to keep up with those changes and to hear that we were about to have another layer of complexity added to that, i think was concerning for people. Whenever those rules change, it impacts peoples plans and it dents peoples confidence. So the fact that the system is going to stay the same i think is welcome news. But the Opposition Labour Party has accused the government of being in Total Chaos over its Border Policy, saying the Travel Industry needs Maximum Clarity, not u turns and confusion. Simon jones, Bbc News. The skills minister, gillian keegan, said it was important to keep the system as simple as possible. If it gets too complicated, People Cannot really follow it. We have looked at various options. With me now is the Labour Mp for exeter is Ben Bradshaw he is also a member of the transport committee. Why is there a problem with something so simple as a Traffic Light System of red, amber and green. I Light System of red, amber and ireen. , ~. , Light System of red, amber and i reen,. , 4. ,. , Light System of red, amber and ireen. , ~. ,. ,. Green. I dont know how much you have looked green. I dont know how much you have looked at green. I dont know how much you have looked at the green. I dont know how much you have looked at the rules green. I dont know how much you have looked at the rules across i have looked at the rules across europe, but the united kingdom has the most complicated, expensive and restrictive Travel Rules of any country. The rest of europe has been travelling freely more or less since mid june, The Americans also. We have had the stop go system, the Prime Minister Inventing new systems then changing his mind. The Holiday Industry in the rest of europe has now almost fully recovered, our system on its knees. Labour is calling for the government to publish the actual criteria. Any other country in europe publishes clear criteria about the rules so you can plan, see which direction the country is moving in and make those decisions. There has been no transparency from the Uk Government and that is why we have this mess. I want to pull out two bits, transparency means access to the data they are building on . And what difference would that mean . Most people have scrapped their share of the idea of going away, we are already in august. I the idea of going away, we are already in august. The idea of going away, we are already in august. I am afraid Boris Johnsons government already in august. I am afraid Boris Johnsons government has already in august. I am afraid Boris Johnsons government has almost i Johnsons Government has almost destroyed the british Summer Holiday this year as far as going abroad, already very late to salvage any of it. Even at this late stage, every little bit helps. What we should have, which every other European Country has, a clear set of criteria, infection levels, vaccination rates, what is it a country needs to be red, amber or green. Folk know good reason we now know france was put in the Quarantine West although it was amber and there was never a good reason given. Every other country publishes the full data so the consumer and crucially the Travel Industry know where they stand and can plan. We have a fraction of flights serving continental destinations at the moment compared with most of our competitor countries. This is destroying jobs and millions of families are being prevented from seeing loved ones, in some cases they havent seen them for 18 months or more. The some cases they havent seen them for 18 months or more. For 18 months or more. The great british public for 18 months or more. The great british public are for 18 months or more. And we have the incredibly complex Testing Regime where you have to have a test before you go, before you come back, after you come back, more expensive than here in italy, 15 Euros for the test you need. In the uk, lucky to be under £50. We need more countries on the Green List, fewer on the Red List. We are still the only country which needs proof of vaccination, discriminatory to young people and also people in the uk who for general Health Reasons cannot have the vaccine because they are immune compromised or vulnerable. There are lots of ways the government has got this about badly wrong and thousands of people have paid unnecessarily with theirjobs in the Travel Sector and millions of families are being kept apart unnecessarily while the rest of the world is back to normal. Ben bradshaw, Labour Mp for exeter, in sicily, thank you for your time. Scotlands First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is to set out Plans Today for the lifting of most legal covid 19 restrictions in a statement to msps. The whole of scotland is currently in level zero of the virus alert system, and the First Minister has said she is hopeful of going further on 9 August, which could see physical distancing rules relaxed, the return of Office Working and larger crowds at events. An afghan general has warned of devastating consequences for global security if the taliban are allowed to win in their fight against government forces. Fighting in Lashkar Gah in the southern Helmand Province has been intensifying. There are fears it could be the first Provincial Capital to fall to the taliban. A Tv Station there is reported to have been seized by the militants, and thousands of people have been fleeing Rural Areas. Ramzan karmali has the details. Gunfire. Firing on the city of herat, just one of the three Provincial Capitals coming under fire from the taliban. In kandahar in the south, thousands have been forced to flee, and in Lashkar Gah in Helmand Province, the taliban are reported to have seized a local Tv Station. Over the last few months, the taliban have taken over large parts of the countryside, the insurgents main focus has been on three provincial cities, with the cities under the heaviest assault being Lashkar Gah in the southern Helmand Province. The president of afghanistan is clear who is to blame for the increase in violence. Translation the reason for our current situation i is that the decision to withdraw was taken abruptly. I told the president of the united states that i respected his decision but i knew it would have some consequences. President ghani said that there was a plan to regain control, but that is giving little comfort to the many who find themselves close to the violence. Translation for me as a herati and a lady, this war is worrying. The situation in the city of herat has changed these days and people are scared. There are no women in herat. This is not a good situation and women who usually work in Government Offices are not going to work. Artillery. Although nearly all of its military forces have left, the us has continued its Air Offensive in support of afghan government troops. Strikes targeting Lashkar Gah continued late on monday. The biden administration condemned the actions of the taliban. Weve seen the reports of atrocities being committed by the taliban in various places where they are on the offensive. And these reports are deeply disturbing and totally unacceptable. Helmand was the centrepiece of the us and british military campaign, but if Lashkar Gah were to fall, it would be the first Provincial Capital won by the taliban in five years and would be a bitter blow to the afghan government. The authorities in the central chinese city of wuhan, where coronavirus first surfaced in 2019, have said its entire population of 11 Million people will be tested for covid 19. The announcement comes a day after the city reported seven cases of the highly transmissible Delta Variant. China is now battling to contain its largest Covid Outbreak in months with Mass Testing and Travel Restrictions. More than 300 cases have been detected over ten days across 15 different provinces. Stephen mcdonnell is in beijing imagine being a person who lives in that city, a resident of wuhan. This is the first city to have a lockdown in the world. A very tough lockdown which eventually worked, they got rid of the coronavirus and have gone a whole year without any cases. Now the government is saying to them, do not panic, there is only six or seven infections in the city. However, do not leave the province and we are going to test everybody, 11 Million people. It is not the first city to have Mass Testing because of this outbreak. Nanjing where is all thought to have started, millions have already been tested three times in recent weeks there. Authorities are worried not so much about the raw numbers, today less than 100 new cases across the country, but it is the spread. Dozens of locations have infections now. It is this Delta Variant which is giving the chinese authorities a headache the same as it has right across the world. Highways tojiangsu closed. Rail connections to beijing from high risk areas have been cancelled. The authorities here despite the fact there has been quite an extensive Roll Out of vaccines, we are told more than A Billion doses, they have a back to zero approach. They are hoping that via these strict measures being put in place all over the country, some cities are totally being locked down. There is one place you cannot leave. They are hoping with tracking and tracing, strict measures, cutting transport, advising everyone in the country not to travel if you dont have to, they can get back to zero in the Run Up to the Winter Olympics coming up next february. They do not want any coronavirus in the country when the Winter Olympics kicks off but it will be very interesting to see if the chinese authorities can do it again with the Delta Variant. Can they crush this latest outbreak using their very strict measures being put in place . Or will the Delta Variant be too much for them . This week gardeners at the University Of Cambridge are abandoning their mechanical Lawn Mowers and turning to a much more historic way of managing their land. Shire horses will harvest a wild Flower Meadow which has recently been planted outside one of the countrys most famous buildings. Part of the lawn at the back of the world famous Kings College Chapel has been replaced with grassland. Once harvested the Hay Bales will be sent across cambridge so more meadows can be sewn. Jo black reports. It looks like a glimpse into the past, but actually six year old cosmo and 15 year old boy are Kings Colleges latest lawnmowers. Come on now. Come on. Keep going. Come on. Good lads. And today theyre here to mow a meadow. For two years, this carpet of wild flowers has replaced some of the colleges 18th century pristine lawn. The idea was to boost biodiversity on the site. The results, an increase in the number of species, a more Natural Environment and an eruption of colour. Our wild Flower Meadow is now in its second year. We installed it to demonstrate the fact that wild Flower Meadows do have a place in urban areas because, of course, we are more or less in the middle of cambridge. The Sustainability Issues, they address, the biodiversity they bring in, theresjust so much fun. And the Shire Horses are here to demonstrate the fact that you can actually manage these meadows, attempting to minimise the internal combustion engine. You know, you dont need to be flying over the top of it with a tractor all the time because, of course, horses are a lot lower carbon than tractors. For 250 years, the Back Lawn of Kings College has been part of this iconic image of cambridge. Changing it was a big gamble, but researchers say different species of plants and insects have been thriving. Ive been really surprised. I thought this project would be largely tokenistic, but actually its having collected the data over three years. It is. Its big enough that it really does make a difference in terms of biodiversity. Its notjust species that were in the area anyway, Feeding Opportunistically, its species that are finding and using this meadow as a meadow. For brett, The Apprentice gardener, documenting the meadow has allowed him to fulfill his other passion of photography. Its changed so much in the last two years. The first year it was very Showy Poppies and cornflowers and things, and now its a lot more intense a lot more wild carrots. But the Insect Life Isjust incredible. But once youre actually inside, theres so many things. So many things buzzing around you, its amazing. Good lads, good lads. The meadow will be back next spring and could be expanded in years to come. Using Cosmo And Boy may not be the fastest or most efficient way of cutting the grass, but these heavy horses are kinder to the wildlife. Jo black, Bbc News. Lets get some of the days other news. The population of chimpanzees has been disappearing fast on the african continent, largely due to deforestation. Sierra leone is the first country to declare the primate a national animal as it tries to reverse the trend. Umaru fofana has been to one of the continents largest chimpanzee sanctuaries, just outside the capital freetown. The race against extinction. Baby chimps left motherless by poachers. If they are lucky, like celia is, they are rescued and brought to this sanctuary. This woman, who has grandchildren of her own, carries out the task of a chimp mother. She says, as a grandmother, it breaks her heart to see what the Baby Chimps have to go through. Translation i take care of orphaned chimps whose parents have been killed in the wild. I like working with animals, like celia who came here when she was two months old. Toothless, she couldnt even sit by herself. Since then, i have been taking care of her. Now she has grown teeth and can sit by herself, Crawl And Walk and has now got to this stage. When they grow older and stronger and can move on their own, they learn how to jump within this Perimeter Fence before they are released to join the 100 others that now call this place their home. They are part of an estimated Nationwide Chimp Population of around 6000, believed to have gone down fivefolds from 30 years ago. That dwindling number is in part due to the disappearing Forest Cover across the country. To reverse the trend, this man who founded Tacugama Chimp Sanctuary 26 years ago, has embarked on a mission. International union for conservation and nature, they announced two years ago that the western chimpanzee, the subspecies we have in Sierra Leone, is extremely threatened and endangered. And that means these chimps could disappear in our lifetime, you are talking about the next 20, 30 years. And Sierra Leone has a significant population, between Sierra Leone, guinea and liberia, probably we have about 70, 75 of this western chimpanzee. So if we dont address this issue as these three nations, i think we have all the chance of watching them disappear right before our eyes. There has been no Nationalforest Inventory in Sierra Leone for more than 40 years, but some estimate about a quarter of the rainforest here is gone. Campaigners are concerned that the Rain Cover is dwindling alarmingly fast. One of the surviving areas is here at this chimp sanctuary. Right. Good, you made it. So, you can see what has been protected, what has been preserved. This is 26 years of work, to make sure that nothing is damaged in this area. This canopy at the sanctuary is one to behold. Not a common sight these days on the freetown peninsula. If urgent measures are not taken, this place will cease being home for these primates. Umaru fofana, Bbc News, freetown. Now its time for a look at the weather with carol. Hello again. For many of us today it is going to be dry with some sunny spells. However, there are some scattered showers in the forecast and some of those, rather like yesterday, will be slow moving, heavy and potentially thundery as well, but they are just showers so not all of us will catch one. Yesterday we Saw Showers move eastwards. Overnight we have had this line of cloud coming across the Isles Of Scilly and also west cornwall and the Channel Islands. This morning it has been producing some showery outbreaks of rain. Most of that will move away but it will leave a fair bit of cloud in its wake. Lots of dry weather and sunshine, showers getting going especially through the afternoon, but they will be heavy and potentially thundery and slow moving. 21 degrees in newcastle and in the sunshine it will feel quite pleasant. Through this evening and overnight, lots of the showers will fade, we will have some Clear Skies. Where we have had showers by day we will see some Mist And Fog forming and we also have a new Weather Front coming in from the West Bringing Rain by The End of the night to Western Scotland and the west of northern ireland. These temperatures you can see here represent the overnight lows in towns and cities. In Rural Areas, it will be a little lower than that. As we head through tomorrow, here is our Weather Front bringing the rain by The End of the night, moving slowly eastwards and weakening. Again we start with lots of dry weather, any Mist And Fog lifting quite rapidly and a fair bit of sunshine. As the sunshine gets going and temperatures rise, that will spark off some more showers. More of a chance of catching one in North East England tomorrow than you have today. Temperatures if anything getting up to around 21, possibly 22, feeling again pleasant in that sunshine. Then it is all change as we move into thursday. Courtesy of this area of low pressure, we can see from the squeeze on the isobars parts of wales and the south will be windy. Gusty wind possibly up to around 40 mph and then the Rain Piles in as well. Eastern areas with the better chance of staying driest longest, the Cloud Building ahead of that rain arriving later on. Temperatures ranging from 16 in lerwick to highs of 21 in norwich. Beyond that, the outlook does remain unsettled. Looking at a mixture of sunshine and showers, temperatures up to around 20, with a hint that something drier and warmer will come our way. This is Bbc News. Im rebecca jones. The headlines at 11. Labour has urged the government to provide the full data behind its Coronavirus Travel restrictions system, after ministers scrapped plans for an Amber Watchlist which would have indicated which countries were likely to move to red. Over Border Policy and said Maximum Clarity was needed rather than Reckless U Turns by Downing Street. The Department Of Transport has responded this morning. They said we are taking a cautious approach to travel that protects Public Health. Thats why we have our Traffic Light System in place, that balances the reopening of International Travel with managing the risk of covid 19 and imported variants. We are regularly reviewing our International Travel policy, based on a range of factors and the latest scientific data available. Well, to understand a little bit more about travel impact on Infection Data we can speak to paul hunter, professor of medicine at the university of East Anglia can you give us any sense of the science behind the Traffic Light System . In terms of Infection Rates to put a country on a red or amber or Green List . Its to put a country on a red or amber or Green List . Or Green List . Its not actually that clear. Or Green List . Its not actually that clear, certainly or Green List . Its not actually that clear, certainly even or Green List . Its not actually that clear, certainly even to l or Green List . Its not actually i that clear, certainly even to me or Green List . Its not actually that clear, certainly even to me and theres a number of issues here. The first is how much infection is there in another Country And Weather that will lead to more pieces coming into the country than we are exporting to this other country and when you look at the situation at the moment i think it is only spain and europe that has more cases per head of population and we have so in that context certainly as far as europe is concerned Controlling And Petition just in Case Numbers is is concerned Controlling And Petitionjust in Case Numbers is not that advantageous. The key issue is the variance. Certainly the big issue concerning francis Weather Fronts had a large number of the Baiter Variant which was the South African variant. The big issue concerning france is whether france had the Beta Variant which was the South African variant. When you look at the data it is very difficult to get a clear picture. France actually do a lot of sequencing so we know a lot more about what variants are circulating in france than in most other European Countries. The Beta Variant has been decreasing quite dramatically since a high last april and is down to actually very small numbers no. From what we can gather most of those cases are actually on one of their overseas territories such as the reunion islands. At the moment it is not clear why some of the countries in europe are on amber and some are green. Certainly based on the criteria of Case Numbers and risk from variance. Variance. Ih risk from variance. Variance. In terms of protection offered by the vaccine, if you have had a double vaccination do we know how much of a risk you are at from new variants . Your mac it certainly is the case that even with the older your mac it certainly is the case that even with the older variants is not 100 that even with the older variants is not 10096 effective that even with the older variants is not 10096 effective against that even with the older variants is| not 10096 effective against infection not 100 effective against infection but very good at protecting you against severe disease and to a large extent that is really what you want. If covid only because the very mild Infection Nobody would be that concerned about it and the vaccine still are very good at protecting against severe disease from, even from the variants that are a little bit more resistant to vaccines are indeed previous immunity. Professor hunter, indeed previous immunity. Professor hunter. Does indeed previous immunity. Professor hunter, does opening indeed previous immunity. Professor hunter, does opening up hunter, does opening up international Travel Risk third wave or is it not as simple as that . I dont think its as simple as that because we have known even longer for covid that Travel Restrictions dont stop the spread of infectious diseases globally. What they do do is delay the spread and sometimes delaying the spread is actually more than enough because if you can delay the spread until you are better at treating it, like we were in the second wave compare to the first wave, Or Untilyou Second Wave compare to the first wave, or until you can have an effective vaccine like we have been able to have in the third wave which wouldnt have in the second wave, Thenit Wouldnt have in the second wave, then it has big advantages. But in order to achieve that the advantages of delaying the spread actually become less in relationship to the continuing negative sides of further and more prolonged Travel Restrictions so it is a difficult balance to be taken, and maybe at the moment we are at the point where the moment we are at the point where the disease as a whole is decreasing in the uk, and weve got at the moment in the uk virtually all the variants that we are concerned about, very few Beat Up Variance in the last few days and the last few Weeks Beta Variance but it doesnt seem to compete well with the Delta Variant and once the Delta Variant took hold it started to exclude the Beta Variant are now in South Africa you have very few Beta Variant cases and that is down largely to the Delta Variant excluding the beta. Shes largely to the Delta Variant excluding the beta. As with everything excluding the beta. As with everything with excluding the beta. As with everything with the excluding the beta. As with | everything with the spiders, excluding the beta. As with i everything with the spiders, it excluding the beta. As with everything with the spiders, it is not straightforward, is it . Many thanks. With this virus. Scotlands First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is to set out Plans Today for the lifting of most legal covid 19 restrictions in a statement to msps. Our chief international correspondent, Lyse Doucet is in the afghan capital kabul. Bring us up to date with the current situation and your assessment of the fighting in the province. As you mentioned, The General has been speaking to the bbc, he is a young british educated general who is the Commanding Officer in Helmand Province which is coming under major pressure from taliban fighters in nearly a week now. The Talybont Control not only most of the district of Helmand Province In Southern Afghanistan but have now reached the centre of Lsshka Gah, the capital of Helmand Province and many of our viewers will have heard of it because it is the province in afghanistan where british troops used to be stationed and patrolled the same streets with the taliban are now overrunning. The latest we haveis are now overrunning. The latest we have is that they have overrun the police headquarters, assaulted the prison where they are trying to free the prisoners and the afghan forces are responding with a strike so its still in the balance but certainly is under pressure. The taliban are very desperate to seize major Provincial Capitals like Lsshka Gah which would give them more territory, a strategic advantage and a huge psychological boost in a war where they have for many weeks now had the momentum. What is the impact on civilians in Lsshka Gah . Huge. Every battlefront is also a major humanitarian Crisis. The United Nations estimates, this was given to us about a week ago, so it is even higher now that some 330,000 afghans had been forced to flee their home in the first part of this year. The expect that will be more than 1 Million of this fighting continues as expected by The End of this year. Some are being displaced to other camps, two roadsides, others are trying to flee the country however they can. And revealing terrifying stories including in Lsshka Gah where people are cowering in their homes terrified to go out. In some cases taliban fighters are taking refuge in peoples homes, using them as human shields. People cant go out or get access to Food Or Water and that is the constant sound of gunfire everywhere and also the fear for those for Example Whove worked with the British Army as interpreters, those who have worked with a government that despite taliban reassurances that people will not be harmed, we have seen some really, really grisly stories. Thank you. Now its time for a look at the weather with carol kirkwood. We are looking at highs of up to 21 degrees. Through this evening and overnight some of the shows will fade and we will have clearer skies. The shows will fade and we will have clearerskies. Tomorrow we will start off with that Mist And Fog and it will move quite rapidly. A Weather Front moving across Western Scotland and northern Ireland Weakening as it pushes eastwards. But he has a Silver Medal, so another medalfor Team Gb. The gold went to Ronnie Ul iglesias of cuba. Lets get more now on of our top stories this hour as labour has urged the government to provide the full data behind its Coronavirus Travel restrictions system, after ministers scrapped plans for an Amber Watchlist which would have indicated which countries were likely to move to red. The party accused the conservatives of being in Total Chaos over Border Policy, and said Maximum Clarity was needed rather than Reckless U Turns by Downing Street. The skills minister, gillian keegan, said it was important to keep the system as simple as possible. The most important thing was to try and get that balance right. We have explored a number of options including Amber Watchlist etc. On the whole we have thought we need to make sure the system is simple enough for people to understand. If it gets too complicated, People Cannot follow it. With me now isjim mcmahon, he is Labours Shadow Transport secretary. Good morning. A simple system, the Travel Industry wanted clarity and has welcomed the move there will be no amber watch list, so do you welcome that move to . Im no amber watch list, so do you welcome that move to . Im afraid the current System Welcome that move to . Im afraid the current system is welcome that move to . Im afraid the current system is not welcome that move to . Im afraid the current system is not fit welcome that move to . Im afraid the current system is not fit for current system is not fit for Purpose And Weve seen that in the way that portugal were treated, in the way france was treated where they created an entirely new category for the Amber List and that creates even more confusion and means that the travelling public dont have the confidence to book ahead and what weve been calling for is a simple system that says its either safe to go which means its either safe to go which means its on the Green List or its not safe to go and it should be on the Red List and if you have people who are double vaccinated, there is no reason we should not lead the internal charge of an international Vaccination Passport that recognises the benefit of the Vaccination Roll out and we were promised by the Government But Weve seen its fallen short in the us and with the eu and the lack of action from the government is frankly not good enough. Government is frankly not good enouih. , ,. , enough. You must accept that the government enough. You must accept that the government needs enough. You must accept that the government needs to enough. You must accept that the government needs to balance enough. You must accept that the government needs to balance the | enough. You must accept that the government needs to balance the need to protect Public Health with what you call a simpler system for more clarity for holiday makers . Absolutely and wed love for the government to do that but they didnt do that in one of the reasons why the us will not allow british travellers over is because Boris Johnson was late and adding india to the Red List at the same time as pakistan and bangladesh and by the time it was added 20,000 people came into the uk and the Delta Variant was running wild across the country and it could have been a good thing for us. It didnt happen and we need to move on and we need to get a system in place that protects the public and Public Health but allows us to travel where it is safe to do so and we are asking for the full data to be published so we can make an informed choice about whether a country is safe to go to or not. The government have said they will publish it, but every week we wait and we dont see the data coming forward and its not good enough. Despite not having access to the data we know the Delta Variant is spreading rapidly in the us and in some European Countries where there is a lower rate of vaccination and the Government Cantjust ignore that, can it . Thats why the system is in place as it is . The that, can it . Thats why the system is in place as it is . Is in place as it is . The example with the us is in place as it is . The example with the us seeing is in place as it is . The example with the us seeing higher is in place as it is . The example with the us seeing higher rates| is in place as it is . The example i with the us seeing higher rates and an increase in rates but in the same week the government have allowed us travellers into the uk without any quarantine at all. Ii travellers into the uk without any quarantine at all. Quarantine at all. If they are double vaccinated. Quarantine at all. If they are double vaccinated. If quarantine at all. If they are double vaccinated. If they i quarantine at all. If they are l double vaccinated. If they are double vaccinated. If they are double vaccinated double vaccinated. If they are double vaccinated that double vaccinated. If they are double vaccinated that the i double vaccinated that the Delta Variant can still be transmitted by somebody double vaccinated and it doesnt take away the Transmission Risk at all. What we want to do is make sure that the criteria is set out and transparent that the data for every country has published so it can be assessed properly and this is the critical piece, we need to make sure with the data comes a direction of travel and the current treat currently on the Green List the right way or wrong way, if youre looking to book a holiday in two or three weeks time you want to know the country is going on the right direction on the wrong direction. What you mention travellers looking to book in two or three weeks time but isnt the crux of this that whatever you advocate is just too late, really, of this that whatever you advocate isjust too late, really, because of this that whatever you advocate is just too late, really, because we are already into august. Most people have decided they are not going abroad and the Holiday Season is almost over, isnt it . I agree, which is why we started saying this months ago so theyd have had plenty of time to learn from the mistakes made in The Other part of the pandemic and put It Right and have a coherent plan in place for dealing with the summer and Im Afraid its not good enough that the Furlough Scheme is likely to end in september but travel tourism, aviation has not had the ability to recover over the summer and the government needs to be far more to get simpler fine system in place and also the financial support to make sure we dont see a Cliff Edge in september. We must leave it there. Thank you. Stephen mcdonnell is in beijing. Imagine living in wuhan, the city which had the worlds first coronavirus lockdown, a very tough lockdown which eventually eliminated a virus from that city. They have gone for 12 months without any cases at all, going about their daily lives without Covid Restrictions, but now, thanks to the Delta Variant, it is back. Officials are telling people do not panic, that despite the fact there are only a few cases, they shouldnt leave the province and that all citizens in that city of 11 Million people are going to be tested. This is not the first chinese city to have Mass Testing in this current outbreak. Nanjing, where it all started, they have had three rounds of testing in recent weeks. Overall in china, the numbers are not huge, but whats really bothering the authorities is the spread of the cases. So, highway links have been cut. Train connections with beijing from high risk areas have been cancelled and in one popular tourist area, people have been told dont leave. In fact, anywhere people are found to have been infected, their local housing estate, their local community is going into lockdown. What this is all about is chinas elimination strategy, so even though vaccines have been rolled out here in big numbers, apparently more than 1 Billion doses, the strategy is to get back to zero. In the Run Up to the Winter Olympics next february, thatis the Winter Olympics next february, that is the goal, to again remove the coronavirus from china. The real question is, can they do it again . Can the chinese authorities get rid of the coronavirus in the way they have been able to do so far, or will the Delta Variant be too tough for them as well . This week, gardeners at the University Of Cambridge are abandoning their mechanical Lawn Mowers and turning to a much more historic way of managing their land. Shire horses will harvest a wildFlower Meadow which has recently been planted outside one of the countrys most famous buildings. Part of the lawn at the back of the world famous Kings College Chapel has been replaced with grassland. Once harvested the Hay Bales will be sent across cambridge so more meadows can be sown. Jo black reports. It looks like a glimpse into the past, but actually six year old cosmo and 15 year old boy are Kings Colleges latest lawnmowers. Come on now. Come on. Keep going. Come on. Good lads. And today theyre here to mow a meadow. For two years, this carpet of wildflowers has replaced some of the colleges18th century pristine lawn. The idea was to boost biodiversity on the site. The results, an increase in the number of species, a more Natural Environment and an eruption of colour. Our wildFlower Meadow is now in its second year. We installed it to demonstrate the fact that wildFlower Meadows do have a place in urban areas because, of course, we are more or less in the middle of cambridge. The Sustainability Issues they address, the biodiversity they bring in, theresjust so much fun. I thought this project would be largely tokenistic, but actually its, having collected the data over three years, it is. Its big enough that it really does make a difference in terms of biodiversity. Its notjust species that were in the area anyway, Feeding Opportunistically at species that are finding and using this meadow as a meadow. Now, all of us watching britons bring Home Gold In Tokyo are quite nervous, but its another level for the families of Team Gbs olympians. Yeah, with covid, everyone has to keep their distance and i think max is one of those gymnasts that likes to stay on his own and he doesnt want to think about the result until the result becomes official. She already does gymnastics, she does little training with him at the gym, so for her it is just normal for someone to be doing a handstand and that moment you are all sitting together, the family at his parents house, that was quite a moment . It was. They have obviously supported him since the beginning and drove him all the way to gymnastics every single day and have put so much commitment to his training and competition, every single competition. For me to be able to share that day with them and willow to be with her cousins and grandparents was really special and i think it meant a lot to max for us to be altogether. And you cant wait to have him home. I know i have missed him a lot. She has and i need some help. Hes a brilliant dad and he has missed her massively whilst hes been away, so i think i think he will love to be home. He has been brilliant with the media, with us for years and i think i first met him ten, 11, 12 years ago and hes always been fantastic. Thats really good. At the start when he first started doing media, i think he was quite nervous, but now he is just himself, he comes across as who he is in real life and that is why he is really good, because he doesnt put on a front and that is what he comes across like, as max. He will be home doing handstands very soon. I hope so thank you. Thanks a lot for having me. Stay with us. Ben brown is coming up next with the news that well. Now its time for a look at the weather with carol kirkwood. For many of us to date will be dry with a lengthy sunny spells, however, there are some scattered showers in the Forecast And Yesterday they will be slow moving, heavy and potentially thundery but they are showers, so not all of us will catch one. Yesterday We Saw the showers move eastwards and we had a line of cloud coming in across the Isles Of Scilly and also cornwall and the Channel Islands and this morning its been producing showery outbreaks of rain and most of that will move away but it will leave a fair bit of cloud in its wake, so a lot of dry weather, a lot of sunshine on the showers are getting going, especially through the afternoon and they will be heavy and potentially thundery and slow moving. 21 degrees in newcastle and in any sunshine it will feel pleasant. Through the evening and overnight a lot of showers will fade and we have Clear Skies and where we have had showers by day we could see patchy Mist And Fog forming and we also have a new Weather Front coming in from the West Bringing Rain by The End of the night to the west of scotland on the west of northern ireland. These temperatures you can see here represent overnight lows in towns and cities and in Rural Areas it will be lower than that. As we head through tomorrow the Weather Front brings the rain, moving slowly eastwards and weakening, so we start with a lot of dry weather and Mist And Fog lifting rapidly and some sunshine but as the temperatures rise that will spark off more showers and a better chance of catching one in North East England tomorrow than you have today and temperatures if anything getting up to about 21 possibly 22 degrees, feeling again pleasant in the sunshine. Then it is all change as we move into Thursday Courtesy of the low pressure and the Weather Fronts and you can see from the squeeze over the isobars in wales and the south it is going to be windy, gusty winds up to 40 mph and then the rain will pile in as well. Eastern areas has a better chance of staying dry but the cloud will build ahead of the rain arriving later on and temperatures range from 16 in lerwick to highs of 21 in norwich. Beyond that, the outlook remains unsettled and we are looking at a mixture of sunshine and showers up to 20 degrees but something dry and warm should come our way on monday
