Yes 49 years great britain have waited for their Eventing Gold. Britains riders make history at the Tokyo Olympics with gold in the Team Eventing and silver in the individual. And Emily Campbell becomes the first British Female Weightlifter to win an Olympic Medal American gymnast Simone Biles will compete in an Olympic Final tomorrow after missing several others to focus on her mental health. A five year Old Boy found dead in a river is named by South Wales police as Logan Williamson from sam in bridgend. And a West Midlands Police Officer found guilty of two assaults on members of The Public both the victims were black. Good afternoon. We start with the breaking news that the Nhs Covid 19 app in england and wales will be modified so that fewer contacts are required to self isolate. The Health Secretary Sajid Javid says the changes ensure we are striking the right balance between reducing disruption and protecting those at risk. Business leaders have complained about the large numbers of Staff Whove had to self isolate after being pinged by the app the so called pingdemic. Naomi grimley is our health correspondent. Is this likely to reduce the scale of the so called pingdemic . It is this likely to reduce the scale of the socalled pingdemic . It will reduce the number of the socalled pingdemic . It will reduce the number of of the socalled pingdemic . It will reduce the number of people of the so called pingdemic . It ll reduce the number of people getting alerts and told to self isolate, we dont know how many. It relates to a particular subgroup. This is the close contacts of people who have tested positive, but crucially who are asymptomatic. Previously the app has been looking for contacts five days prior to them taking a test, the test that turned out to be positive, this time from now on is going to only be looking at the two days prior to this positive test. I stress this is just in the case of people who are asymptomatic, who are displaying no symptoms but are found to be positive. Nevertheless, ministers and officials are insisting this is an important change and its about really keeping public faith in the app. And jenny harris, the head of the Uk Health Security Agency said its about adapting it to a new phase in the pandemic if you like. Its a very different period now, if you think its a very different period now, if you think about where we were at the start of you think about where we were at the start of the you think about where we were at the start of the Delta Peak which is hopefully starting to flatten now, we had hopefully starting to flatten now, we had far fewer people vaccinated, we had far fewer people vaccinated, we had we had far fewer people vaccinated, we had raising Case Rates and its inevitable we had raising Case Rates and its inevitable that we had the Apt Doing exactly inevitable that we had the Apt Doing exactly what it should do, which is identify exactly what it should do, which is identify close contacts frequently. However. Identify close contacts frequently. However, we are in a slightly different however, we are in a slightly different position now, we are trying different position now, we are trying to different position now, we are trying to open up, trying to balance and we trying to open up, trying to balance and we have our most vulnerable people and we have our most vulnerable people protected with the vaccine and hopefully we are now starting to see a and hopefully we are now starting to see a plateau and a bit of a decline in the see a plateau and a bit of a decline in the cases see a plateau and a bit of a decline in the cases and Hopefully Hospitalisation as well. Very different context which is why the balance different context which is why the balance for public health impact and impact balance for public health impact and impact on balance for public health impact and impact on individuals lives and Working Impact on individuals lives and Working Lives is where we think we should Working Lives is where we think we should hit Working Lives is where we think we should hit now. There had been raised among some Government Ministers that people might start deleting the app because of this pingdemic. Yes there was some evidence of that happening. One intent of the people they asked from the survey had a Leave Jake and the ive had disabled it by turning the bluetooth off. Also the Department Of Health admitted that injuly by The End ofjuly about 10 fewer people were using it to check into venues. So i guess we can see this move as a bit of a grand bargain by the government, they are saying to the government, they are saying to The Public stick with the app because we think it is really useful. But in return will make sure you only get told to self isolate if you only get told to self isolate if you really are at high risk of having caught covid. One more thing to bear in mind is that after the 16th Of August in england if you do get notified by the App Youlljust be encouraged to take a laboratory assessed test, it wont actually be told to self isolate because that rule crucially is about to go. That all changes rule crucially is about to go. That all changes in rule crucially is about to go. That all changes in two rule crucially is about to go. That all changes in two weeks time. Thank you very much indeed. Ministers are being urged to abandon the idea of a Covid Amber Watchlist of Holiday Destinations which might be moved on to the red Travel List at short notice. Opponents say the move would prevent people travelling to destinations like spain because they wouldnt want to risk having to quarantine in a hotel when they return to the uk. The row comes on the day that fully vaccinated people arriving in the uk from the us and most of the eu will no longer have to isolate. This afternoon, the Prime Minister was asked about Travel Restrictions while on a visit to airbuss new Space And Defence hq in stevenage. This is what he had to say im very pleased that today because of the Vaccine Rollout we are able to say to people coming back from anywhere in the Eu Plus Switzerland and the united states, they do not have to quarantine, double jabbed people no longer have to quarantine. What i want to do is obviously, i understand people how keen people are much about their holidays and want to go abroad, i understand how much people plan and prepare for the Summer Holidays how much people care about their Summer Holidays. We have to remember this is still a dangerous virus and we must try and stop variants coming in and Stop Importing Variants from abroad. We have to have a balanced approach. What i want to see is something that is as simple and as user friendly for people as possible. But obviously the double vaccinations that we have got really offer the way forward, i think weve now got more than 70, i think 72 of the population has two jabs. Lets speak to our political correspondent helen catt. From today, fully vaccinated people arriving from the us and most China Chin a lot of speculation of the Amber Watchlist and frankly has scared a lot of holiday makers. What has borisjohnson been saying on that . He was asked about it, just read between the lines. He that . He was asked about it, ust read between the lines. that . He was asked about it, ust read between the lines. He did not definitively say read between the lines. He did not definitively say if read between the lines. He did not definitively say if an read between the lines. He did not definitively say if an amber definitively say if an Amber Watchlist was coming or if it wasnt but it was quite interesting he wanted to make sure the system was as simple and user friendly as possible for people. Because of course the criticism thats been leveled at the government about an Amber Watchlist, leveled at the government about an amberwatchlist, is leveled at the government about an Amber Watchlist, is that itjust adds another layer of Complexity And Complication to the Traffic Light System. Ive already created this category of Amber Plus and if you add in this Amber Watchlist as well and makes the whole system more confusing and will act as a massive Red Flag to people in terms of Booking Destinations which are on the Amber Watchlist and then they worry about the implications that that would have for the Travel Industry. So the conservative mp had that covers Gatwick Airport says it the most meaningful travel which is needed to save jobs in the industry. So thats where the concern is around us and they dont want to see any layers of complexity added into that system. The opposite argument for ministers has been that what it will do is to allow travellers to make an informed decision, because of course the consequences of a country moving from amber to red are quite big for an individual traveller. On an amber this country if you are double jab you can come back and not quarantine, if that becomes a red country you find yourself in hotel quarantine, a cost of over £1000 for a solo trevor. The consequences are quite big but its about the government finding that balance. find about the government finding that balance. ,. ,. , balance. And he said we need to get the Travel Industry balance. And he said we need to get the Travel Industry moving balance. And he said we need to get the Travel Industry moving again. The Travel Industry moving again. That will be music to the ears of the Travel Industry who think frankly there not a lot of time to the summer. Frankly there not a lot of time to the summer the summer. This is the second summer that the summer. This is the second summer that the the summer. This is the second summer that the travel the summer. This is the second | summer that the Travel Industry the summer. This is the second summer that the Travel Industry has been very badly affected by the coronavirus pandemic. This is the key to this is how do you try and open up the Travel Industry and get that going again whilst at the same timejust keeping an that going again whilst at the same time just keeping an eye that going again whilst at the same timejust keeping an eye on that going again whilst at the same time just keeping an eye on what you had the Prime Minister say they are. The big fear is about bringing in a new variant and thats by the Traffic Light System is brought end, to try and balance those. But mps will say he needs to be balanced enough so that you can still open up the industry enough to help save those jobs and have a proper summer season. Of course those jobs and have a proper summer season. Of course we are those jobs and have a proper summer season. Of course we are already in august, Summer Holiday Season is not that long. Laboursaying august, Summer Holiday Season is not that long. Labour saying that they criticise this idea of a possible watchlist as well and accuse the government of overseeing chaos and say what they should be doing is releasing the data behind the decisions for each different country. And that would help people. Its this balance between trying to boost the economy and boost those sectors of the industry which have been very, very badly hit and thats peoples jobs and livelihoods. From today, fully vaccinated people arriving from the us and most of the eu will no longer have to isolate. Our Business Correspondent Katy austin reports. Limits on international travel affect more than holidays. Gemma is looking forward to bringing her baby from Los Angeles to the uk to meet his grandparents. The idea that the quarantine has now gone means that were going to have our whole trip where we can be with our family and friends. Previously, only people who received theirjabs in the uk could avoid self isolating when arriving from Amber List countries. From this morning, fully vaccinated us or Eu Travellers dont have to quarantine and they wont have to take a test on day eight after arriving. They must still take a Predeparture Test and a Covid Pcr Test on day two after their arrival. As soon as we got off the aeroplane, we were so excited. Even The Little Ones were shouting, london, london so, it is just absolutely marvellous to be back. Its been a very long time. Weve onlyjust literally walked in a few minutes ago. When we get home and see everybody, it will sink in. We live in chicago at the moment, l so they havent been back to seel grandparents for about two and a half years. So it took us about 15 documents |as well as passports to get back. The tougher Quarantine Rule still applies to people coming from france. The us is still not allowing Uk Visitors in, but one airline told me todays changes are a step in the right direction, triggering a notable rise in bookings. Week over week, more than 150 for New York london, specifically. More than 250 increase. For sure, there is a big difference, pre pandemic, much closer to the departure where customers are booking. Because of confidence, of course, in booking, changes of Travel Restrictions. For some other british businesses which depend on tourism, including this Central London hotel, todays move is encouraging. As soon as that announcement was made we have had many bookings, particularly from the us. The Europe Market is slower, but particularly from the us. We wish it could have happened earlier but the fact that it has now happened is a positive for us and the industry as a whole. Tour operators involved with Red List countries, though, are still waiting for any good news. A slight sigh of relief that the government is minded to allow people to move Around The World a little bit, theres some solace in that. But we are a long way from the opening of long haul travel. We need recognition from the government that they understand the challenges we continue to face, and when we need support. Uk Airline Bosses welcome todays changes but said ongoing restrictions could threaten the aviation sectors recovery, and called for more countries to be put on the green list. The governments next review of the Travel Rules is due later this week. Katy austin, bbc news. Figures on a monday are often slightly lower because of the lack of reporting in the weekend but in terms of deaths, 2a deaths reported within 20 days of a positive test. Yesterday it was 65 so well down on that. In terms of cases, 21,952 cases to me yesterday that was 24,000 470. So down on yesterdays figures. The stock more about that news about the Covert Apps could be modified or tweaked. Business leaders have been complaining about the large numbers of staff who have had to self isolate after being part of the so called pingdemic. Im joined now by roger barker, director of policy at the institute of directors. Is this welcome news that these app is being tweaked slightly . fin is being tweaked slightly . On balance of positive news is being tweaked slightly . Q i balance of positive news would have to say this is tinkering around the edges as far as members are concerned. The government was attempting to open up the economy on the 19th Ofjuly about the effect of the 19th Ofjuly about the effect of the pingdemic has been to keep it close down. And its not yet apparent how many reduced persons will be affected by this tweaking to the app. But i really think it is too little too late as far as we concerned. We really should have brought that forward and these latest measures, it may be will mean that Tens Of Thousands of people are no longer pinged but there were 690,000 in the three weeks of the 2ist. 690,000 in the three weeks of the 21st. So i had quite a devastating effect on businesses and it really would be better Tojust Effect on businesses and it really would be better to just fast forward to a situation where he didnt have to a situation where he didnt have to isolate. ,. , , to isolate. It is but theres all. Sorts of questions arising. If this is so important then why is everything going to stop on the 16th Of August . That really does not make sense. The way in which this is actually preventing infections is by hugely disrupting the economy. It may be stopping infections but in doing that by keeping everyone at home and putting businesses out of business. Thats the real problem here. At be open up the economy or open up the economy, the government needed to take a clear decision on that on the 19th Ofjuly. D0 needed to take a clear decision on that on the 19th Ofjuly. That on the 19th Ofjuly. Do you think businesses that on the 19th Ofjuly. Do you think businesses have that on the 19th Ofjuly. Do you think businesses have had that on the 19th Ofjuly. I think it has especially in the businesses out altogether . I think it has especially in the hospitality | it has especially in the Hospitality Sector which was on Life Support Mechanism and had been for a long period of time. And it isjust its been this false thought thinking that the 19th Ofjuly we would get back to normal and that simply has not been the case. It has all been pushed back and have absolutely no doubt that given the scale that there will be have businesses going out of business during this period, there will be businesses that are significantly affected. So it really has been very bad. Something of a catastrophe in terms of Government Communications to the Business Community over the last month or so. And just on the Travel Industry, i dont know how many of your members are in the Travel Industry but portions of the same today he wants to get the Travel Industry moving again, he wants a simple user friendly system of Traffic Lights, Travel Restrictions and so on. Are you encouraged by that . Simplicity and predictability are what business want. Government has to make its ownjudgements about what Public Health Measures should be introduced, but so far it has been anything but straightforward in terms of travel, communications with these various lists, Watch Lists and we can simplify that process in any way then that is for the good. Thank oU So way then that is for the good. Thank yoU So much Team Gb have won their eleventh gold at the Tokyo Olympics. Great britains eventing team did it after producing a dominant display in the Showjumping Finale at tokyos equestrian park. The showjumpers Oliver Townend, Laura Collett and Tom Mcewen took Team Gb s first gold in Team Eventing for 49 years. Tom mcewen has also won the Silver Medal in the eventing individual competition. There was more success in the womens weighlifting with Emily Campbell becoming the first British Female Weightlifter to win an olympic medal with silver in the super heavyweight competition. And this is what all that does to the medals table, Team Gb now have 11 gold, 12 silver and 12 bronze medals. Meanwhile, one of americas greatest olympians the gymnast Simone Biles has decided she will compete in tomorrows Beam Final thats after she pulled out of several previous finals in tokyo to focus on her mental health. And the belarusian Sprinter Krystina Tsimanouskaya Has taken refuge at the Polish Embassy in tokyo after claiming officials tried to forcibly return her home after she criticised her countrys coaches. For a full round up of all the action in tokyo, lets cross to gavin ramjaun At The Bbc Sport centre. They made history in the eventing and have made a strong start to the track cycling. Andy swiss reports on the best of the action. Hoping to ride into the record books, nearly half a century after they last won gold in Team Eventing, britain began the final day in first place, so could theyjump to glory . Tom mcewen, not a foot wrong. Tom mcewen got them off to the perfect start, and after Laura Collett it was down to the final rider Oliver Townend. He set out with a healthy advantage and held his nerve, and finally britain had done it. Yes 49 years great britain have waited for their Eventing Gold medal. A brilliant display from three riders all making their olympic debuts, Team Gb s long wait for a gold in this event has certainly been worth it. It was a frustrating day for britains sailors because they could not actually sail, their medal hopes were put on hold as a lack of wind meant racing was postponed. Elsewhere there was no shortage of action. Laura kenny began her quest for another gold alongside katie archibald, Elinor Barker and josie knight. With the help of a radical new Bike Design they came second in qualifying for the pursuit. Room for improvement but a solid first ride. A lot more solid than one australian cyclist s bike, alex porters handlebars disintegrating mid race. Thankfully no major harm done. Meanwhile one of britains biggest hopes on the track got her olympics under way. Laura muir going in the 1500 metres, it was the smoothest of starts. Second in her heat to ease into the semifinal. So excited to get started. I was itching to get going, and its really nice to get the first round out the way. Feeling comfortable. There was drama in another heat, the World Champion ready to make her move on the final lap when she tripped over another athlete. No way back, surely. But instead she picked herself up, chased down her rivals, sprinted past them and ultimately won her heat. That suggests she may take some beating. In the final of the womens hurdles in little bit of olympic history. Powering away to the gold medal. Jasmine camachoquinn winning a first ever Athletics Gold for puerto rico. For such a small country, she later said, to give little kids hope, i am just glad that i am the person to do it. And following his success in the team showjumping earlier Tom Mcewen won a silver in the individual eventing final. It was a near perfect performance from mcewen on his horse toledo de kerser. But a superb final round from Germanysjulia Kra Jewski was enough to take the gold. A couple of errors by team mate Oliver Townend pushed him out of the medal positions so australias Andrew Hoy secured bronze at the age of 62. Emily campbell has become the first British Female Weightlifter to win an olympic medal taking silver in the over 87kg category. Campbell was making her olympic debut and lifted a total of 283kg setting new British And Commonwealth records and also claimed great britains first olympic Weightlifting Medal since 1984. Chinas Li Wenwen won gold and american Sarah Robles won bronze. Great britain are through to the Womens Hockey Semi Finals after a dramatic Shootout Win over spain. The match finished 2 2 in normal time, taking it to a shootout where Goalkeeper Maddie Hinch was the hero, keeping out all of spains efforts to take Team Gb to the Semi Final where theyll face the netherlands in a rematch of 2016 Olympic Final. And she was also told that the decision to forcibly take her back to belarus was not taken by the Master Of Sport but on a higher level which means that lukashenko might have made this decision himself. So she felt that this case became too political so she cannot come back to belarus because she might be arrested there. And now Propaganda Campaign has started against her. She is very much criticised by state owned tv and newspapers controlled by the regime. So she just feels that she might be arrested if she comes back home. Band arrested if she comes back home. The scottish Health Secretary Humza Yousaf has reported a nursery in dundee to the care inspectorate, alleging possible racial or religious discrimination after his two year old daughter was refused a place. Mr yousaf says that after his family was turned down, his wife asked a white scottish friend to put in an application and it was accepted within 24 hours. Our Scotland Correspondent Alexandra Mckenzie has more. Well, they said that they tried twice to get their daughter into the little scholars programme, but he said that when a white friend applied, they were quickly offered a place. They set their two year old daughter had been discriminated against and they wanted to test this out and so Mr Yousaf did a test and when an application under a muslim name was rejected and a different one was offered a place. Why the most important meetings on Climate Change since the paris Climate Change since the paris climate agreements. With expectations that it will deliver significant progress in the fight against rising temperatures. The Role Wildlife Fund is leaving with artists, such as tracy, to inspire global action in one creative involved is the british artist who joins us now. Thank yoU So much for being with us. Just give us an idea of the connection as yoU See it between art and Climate Change. I think there is always been the connection between art and Climate Change. But i think now, it is the time, the appropriate time for artists to be involved in Art Galleries and for a long time now, i dont think the artwork has been involved in Climate Change as it should be and Art Galleries do take up should be and Art Galleries do take up a percentage of any sales and i think that the percentage now should go towards Conservation Issues and Climate Change in general and the world Wildlife Fund and its fantastic to be invited by art wise, to make a digital piece of artwork and a Screen Print being made and its going to be about tigers. So im really concerned about Tiger Conservation because my dad used to be an Ice Cream Man with a tiger on the top and ive been using tigers in my work for the last 30 years. And so, im doing a Screen Print and it is great that the funds from this, the funds and percentage of this, the funds and percentage of this, all of it will go towards the conference and the whole climate conference, i think it is about time the artists and galleries got their act together and did more for Climate Change. It is a massive issue and we know its been going on for the past 30 years, so i am very concerned and we are very passionate about Tiger Conservation and lots of issues to deal with Climate Change and i think its, its a great opportunity for artists to introduce us into the art works, whether it be painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media, the works. And we should all be concerned about this because were running out of time and we still hope that we can make this work ok because we are on the brink of so many disasters as weve seen over the last few months but the floods in britain and the whole world over. And im really grateful to be invited to make a brand new piece of artwork and will go to auction and will be on the website for art to change the world and so, i look forward to everybody seeing what ive made and all the other artists have made and and ive made and all the other artists have made an ive made and all the other artists have made an . ,. Temperatures are forecast to hit well above 40 degrees celcius this week in Southern Turkey which is battling a series of major wildfires. Eight people have died in the worst blazes the country has seen the authorities say most fires are now under control, but as simonjones reports, the huge Firefighting Operation is continuing. The fires continue to rage, fanned by strong winds, fuelled by soaring temperatures. More than 100 blazes have broken out. Volunteers have been working Night And Day to try to do what they can, providing Food And Drink for exhausted firefighters and helping them with local knowledge. Translation while There Are these fires and this disaster, many residents, including myself, cannot put our heads on the pillow and fall asleep peacefully. We must be responsible for our land to prevent our future from burning. But the situation is really bad now. That is evident from these pictures showing the scorched earth. If the blazes come down the ridge the coastal suffered great damage which is why we started evacuating. We are helping those who do not have any vehicles. The police are trying to establish whether some of the fires were started deliberately. The turkish government is facing criticism for the shortage of Firefighting Aircraft in the country, it insists it will do everything to help those affected by the flames rebuild their lives. It says the majority of the fires have been contained. Many people are wondering what will be left of their homes and belongings when they are finally allowed to return. Parts of italy, Spain And Greece have also been suffering, and as temperatures rise, so do the concerns. Well, hundreds of tourists and residents have been forced to flee the area. One of them is amy hutchinson. Shes originally from aberdeen but works as a teacher in the Resort Town of icemeler. She says the situation out there is terrifying. In about ten minutes, we are just completely surrounded by red fire. Like, ive never been more scared in my life. Everything coming down the road and we look back at it, it looked like a war zone. But the sky was just completely read, it was like snow falling onto the ground. Today, marks three months until the 26th un climate Change Conference in glasgow, it is to be the most civilians have been fleeing their homes in three afghan cities where Security Forces are fighting taliban militants. The insurgents have captured swathes of territory in the wake of president Bidens Decision to withdraw american forces. Amid renewed fears for the country, the bbc has reunited a british soldier with a man he met in an orphanage nearly twenty years ago, to consider the future. Jeremy ball reports. Hi, how are you . Im very well. How are you . Just i am shocked. An emotional trip down memory lane. Can you point out what one you are . I am this one, in front of the orange shirts. The end of a story that began almost 20 years ago, this is where ramin remembers Playing Football with british troops in kabul. Today hes come back to an orphanage where he lived for years after losing both his parents. Translation i requested a pen i from them and they took their own pen from their Shirt Pocket and gave it to us. It was like they gave you the entire world. Ramin told the boys how eagerly they waited for the soldiers to come and visit. Ramin has brought some childhood photos, too. Here he is queueing for a toy from the troops. Hes barely eight years old. It does bring back an awful lot of memories. Dozens of miles away back in england, weve come to meet the couple who made it happen. Adam was the british officer who decided they would support the orphans. The Royal Anglian Regiment had just arrived in kabul. It was early 2002. It was difficult, through the eyes of a parent, doubly difficult when some of my own children sent some of their own toys out to kabul and, when it was unboxed, i saw things. Well, last time i saw that was in my childs bedroom. Adams wife laurie sent those toys and footballs from england after starting an appeal. She was horrified when adam told her about conditions in the orphanage. I mean, the one. Boys waiting for pencils. I think they were queueing up to two hoursjust for a pencil. You dont appreciate what a pencil means to them. Ramin still treasures the pencils and toys he received from british troops, now almost 20 years on, a chance to tell them how much that meant. Can i ask you what toy did you get . Especially i liked the balls because i am a footballer. How much difference did we make to you . When you are in afghanistan, especially in 2002, 2003, i remember that was the best times. Right now, when i see you, my tears coming on. What are you doing now . I dont have anyjobs. Im not sure for a good security. This time, its too difficult to find job, to continue your education. A lot of problems. Ramin tells them how much he is struggling now. For laurie that is hard to hear. I find it a bit upsetting i that he cannot progress now with his Education And Hisjob prospects. | it was more emotional than i expected to see a grown man and an individual who has clearly grown and developed into a wonderful individual, it is fantastic. Now ramin doesnt think he has a future in afghanistan and as violence escalates and more civilians lose their lives, his prospects are looking bleak. Jeremy ball, bbc news. I love.
